Hes raising fears over where the wannabe autocrat who attempted a coup the last time he lost is trying to take his supporters this time. Heres what he said on saturday about his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. Kamala is Mentally Impaired. Joe biden became Mentally Impaired. Kamala was born that way. She was born that way. If you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country. Anyone would know that. So he does that to shock us, to get us to say, look how reprehensible he is. Were not showing you it for those reasons. Its number 10,000 of his moral bankruptcy, as if we need proof of that. Were not showing it to you because hes crossed some new line and feels great about it, adding to his political riz may thats defined by his vile often racist attacks that he saves up and stores up for black women as well as his longstanding disrespect for those with disabilities. Its all true. Its not why we show it to you. We show it to you for this reason. Watch how elected republicans respond to it. Heres number 3 in the house, Tom Emmer. Do you think Kamala Harris is mentally disabled . Do you approve of that kind of evidence . I think Kamala Harris is the wrong choice for america. And every time trumps republican allies refuse to condemn Something Trump says or dodge answered questions about his latest outrageous statement, in trumps view, he can check them off a list. Politicians have been on for weeks telling him to stick to the issues and not brand her for her policies. This defiance is part of a test that is obviously a project thats already in motion from trumps perspective and that is to already sow doubt about the effects of the election. How do we respond to that . I think its really hard because clearly he is going places that even he has not gone before in order to get attention. He is desperate to grab Attention Back so the focus is on him. I think his most miserable times campaigning is when everything was about her fundraising and her crowds and her convention, and now i think hes going to places that even i think some of us are surprised, this being mentally disabled. I just have one question for Donald Trump. If shes so dumb and mentally disabled, how come she wiped the floor with you at your debate, why did you not stand up to her arc and why are you so damn afraid to debate her again . I think, one, they dont want to engage and respond point by point every single attack he wages on her. It will be the last month of the campaign. Really stick to the issues and focus on the voters because she still has a lot of work to do. That being said, i talked to people close to her, longtime campaign aides. They say this is Donald Trump revealing himself over and over again to voters and its really someone who in their mind is unhinged and unqualified to be president. The more he attacks her personally and says stuff, shes mentally unfit or shes turned more black, it makes the case that hes someone whos showing himself to be someone whos not precedential and has nothing to stick when it comes to attacks on the Vice President. A lot of people i talk with get the sense hes still searching for a way to get to the criticism he wants to get to with her. He hasnt found an issue. They say this is someone who for a very long time has really personally attacked women, personally attacked women of color. So this is more par for the course. That being said, the politics here is the Vice President wants to in this moment first Look President ial, which is why youre seeing her leave Las Vegas and go back to the White House to deal with the hurricane aftermath. She cares about it because shes the Vice President. It shows her being able to do the job of the presidency. Shes going to hammer out everyday Kitchen Table issues and not get into the back and forth because she wants voters who say this is someone who cares about me and why im struggling and all the different things that im worried about every day and i try to make a living in this country. You know, there is something in what yamiche is saying and what claire is saying. She wants another debate, we know that. I think Ben Rhodes had that sense, too, from talking to folks close to her. The campaign believes she would benefit enormously from another Debate Performance like the last one. And she has this insult thats everywhere. Theres an opportunity as claire said. If im so impaired, why dont you debate me, anywhere, any time. This is embarrassing. We know what he thinks of women. We know what hes said on the leaked Access Hollywood Tape and about e. Jean carroll. We got a preview when he was running against nikki haley, calling her nimrod and birdbrain. Right. Birdbrain. Any time he goes Toe To toe with a woman of color, he begins to evolve. In addition to everything you have laid out, the other reason i think its important is theres a small but meaningful subset of voters to whom all of that happened in the past, and it has not yet so fully shaped their thinking on him that theyre prepared to make a candidate choice. So he continues to give them new data points, which is why Lindsey Graham and other republicans are begging him, voters have somehow forgiven you for some of the things youve said. Lets leash it there. Later when theyre Decided And Tuning in and getting reacquainted with you, you dont need to remind them. Thats an interesting point. To voters amused by his misogynous and racist comments, theyre there. Hes so negative, they plan to show up on election day. Im sure the campaign feels that thats not who he should be talking to. If youre just tuning in, the thing with an attack, it has to match up to something that you see, and there is nothing about that insult that would ever i mean, you should. Say that about anybody, but she is come pe tmt, sharper than he is, smarter than he is. Theres nothing to attack. The reality is he needs to win over the people. I think youre right to say this is a test for republicans and the party, are you loyal or not. But then its also what hes going to be doing. Hes to ramp up fear and hatred. Some people will not vote for him, period, but hes going to bank on folk coming home. His task is to turn out lowpropensity white voters, and the way he does that is by ginning up Anger And Hatred and grievance. Harris is the avatar for that. Not only is she mentally deficient, just angry, but hes also talking about send him back. Theyre chanting, right . They ooher going to come into your homes and slit your hopes. What is she doing, its the idea if you count of votes, theres more white voters. Turn them out in numbers that you cant. The idea that this is the strategy and that we sort of have settled on that as the new normal, i feel like we need to stop. The reason for the disastrous debate on Trumps Part is about lying about haitians eating labradoodles. Thats a lie. This idea that the republicans are on these shows, i mean we cover their lack of a spine, their lack of assault. Its just a new normal, right . Weve been talking about it for ion years, but Doctor King gave this talk called the other america. This in a way those two americas have been stitched together from the very beginning. Its not just regional. I domgt know. How do we intervene in this because Donald Trump believes if he traffics in this nonsense, he can be successful. What we do know is a whole bunch are chanting send him back. Yes, there is the possibility Kamala Harris wins with numbers that people have not yet anticipated, and part of that is important for our campaign, but part of it is important is because hes already delegitimized it. Even with this historic electoral victory, he has set the predicate for her to prove herself to a number of voters. She has some incredibly highprofile endorsements coming over The Weekend. You seem to have core character questions. Is he fit for office or not . Lets be honest. Why would a retired Military Man come on to endorse the opposite . You tell me. Im voting for harris. Im voting for Kamala Harris. If you still believe as i do that there are some voters who still care about character, thats a pretty stunning and incredible endorsement from general stanley mcchrystal. This is definitely a striking endorsement. I think it will be interesting to see if it has an impact on these undecided voters in battleground stages, a handful of them, about seven that will continue to be the ones we talk about. Whether or not it makes a difference is the big question here. The Harris Campaign believes theyre building this big Tent Party and that tent is big enough not to just include someone like Dick Cheney, someone whos a former republican Vice President but also the tank would hold someone like aoc, who is about as far away from Dick Cheney as you can get. The Harris Campaign is underscoring that shes getting all this support from republicans and former trump officials. That being said, when i duo on the Campaign Trail and i talk to votersing maybe those voters who voted republican at one point and now dont, they dont say, oh, Im Voting this way because Dick Cheney has made this decision. Theyre saying, Im Voting this way because ive now seen enough of Donald Trump and i dont back someone who says these things about women or immigrants or January 6th is another big thing thats coming up when i talked to voters. Those are things i hear. I dont hear, e was moved by this endorsement. It doesnt mean its not striking or important. It just means as the Harris Campaign is going to continue to roll out the endorsementings, i believe it will do the work of talk to them facetoface in politicstype atmospheres because thats the way people end up really making their miengds up. I think republicans believe in the recall of law in particular, and its difficult to support a candidate who having lost an election tries to use the powers of the presidency to overturn that election. That is Anything But Respect for the Rule Of Law. So i know that a lot of conservative republicans feel the way i do, that you just Cant Support a candidate like that. I think she would have to court all voters, and i do believe that includes moderate republicans and conservative republicans who believe in the Rule Of Law and limited government to economic freedom, individual responsible. She a it to record everyone, and i think she will do well here. Potentially with the endorsements stipulated, a targeted endorsement where someone has credibility can be very helpful. I wonder what you think about that endorsement in arizona. I think it helps. Theres already a backlash against care are Lake And Maga and how she referred to John Mccain and how Donald Trump referred to John Mccain, but i would like to make one point about Jeff Flake. Hes a man of faith. He is somebody who actually follows the tenets of his religiOn And believes very much in them. You know, very similar to mitt romney. And when Donald Trump started misbehaving, Jeff Flake was one of the republicans early on that began saying, wait, this man has a character problem, this man is not moral. This man is a liar. Now, he didnt say it in those words publicly, but he was certainly thats where he was. And he could not reconcile being with this man with his own set of character values. I think that oohs why general mcchrystal and Jeff Flake are both talking about lawless and character, and i think that will actually make a difference especially in a place like Arizona And Utah and oplaces where you have large a large community of Mormon Faith who actually is not comfortable with the immorality of Donald Trump. Its interesting you put your finger on that process, because if you go to the Focus Group participants who let our cameras in, which may not be the perfect Focus Group, right, if we get to see their progress, it is this the revelations about what he did on January 6th that they dont like. Theyre not following the legal travails we follow. That is their process. They may not describe it as a Character Hurdle that they feel, but it comes down to thinks that were clear to the republicans who enabled his first candidacy in 2016, excused his entire presidency 2016 through 20, and are still standing by him today. Why is the republican party by and large silent . Why are they bought off . Because they have to politically. But also, to pull back on eddies comment, i really do Donald Trump is saying to himself, dont worry about undecided voters, theyre really decided. All im going to do now is see how far i can do to motivate nonvoters, to motivate people because thats really what surprised everyone in 2016 were the people showing up that had never shown up before. In my state i can tell you for certain there were a bunch of folks, white folks, and they were not young people. They were older voters who had sat around cursing the man, cursing the government, cursing the rules that had kept them down and they cant afford to retire, they cant afford to send their kids to fire, and Donald Trump was given the finger and, by god, they came out and voted for him. Hes hoping he can find more of those people. He think thats a surer path to the Oval Office than the small number of undecided voters that we spend a lot of time talking about. The problem, though, claire, they came out for him in 2016 because they thought he would take away part of the rigged system. Hes is now part of the rigged system. Thats right. His act is a little old and tiresome and kamala keeps saying. If he goes so far, he urges voters to come out from the other S Side and vote against h. Hes making i hope, a strategic error. I really think he is. Hes going so far down this ugly, ugly, snakebellied hole, theyre going, we cant have this guy back again. Where do you see the Race Today . Dont ask me that. I dont have a succinct answer to that because in part we have this open question of whether or not this is actual strategy. We have sort of an open question of what these maps look like every time we have someone on from the Harris Campaign. Whats the map . Whats the victory . And theyre playing a broad map, differently than they have before. I think whats so alarming, he getting darker and darker and darker with each passing day. Sitting here watching him give his Stump Speech in step and repeat, that is now the best he has of what are becoming the closing days of the campaign, theres no vision. Its not this is the america i want to lead us into looks like x, y, and z. I know your concern for you and your family, and this is what im going to do for them. Its all bogeyman, and the fact he has nothing else is a tell. Its scary for us. If its a tell, what does it say that hes tied in a lot of these states . Im not sure, right, to be honest with you. You know, ive been sitting here trying to figure these things out. You can actually watch, eddie. You know, the thing im trying to work my way through is were talking about the politics of it all, but the darker he goes, the more people are in danger. Yep. Im thinking about the babies in springfield who couldnt go to school. Can you imagine those haitian babies . Who doesnt know someone affected by the smears . When you talk about mass deportations, and i understand there are people waving the signs who feel comfortable with it. But i think if you actually push parter, in every community there are pillars of the community who are tied to people who would be threatened. There are people who have had their children here who skr children, who go to assemblies. Why is it so close . Because Theres Ugliness out there not reducible to him. Yeah, thats right. Theres an ugliness out there thats not reducible to him. And im a Kamala Harris fan. In 2016 she thought she had the base locked and she thought that what she need do was go for that middle, and these folks would turn up. They didnt. In the middle, the undecided folks, the republicans went home. Joe biden was elected because historic numbers of folks showed up, right . They made a decision. And so the second largest turnout ever, Donald Trump got in 2020. So it took historic numbers to beat him, right . And so now we get enamored with the Dick Cheneys and the Liz Cheneys and the flakes, da, da, da, right, and this man is running around busting his chops, scaring the hell out of communities, right, and were trying to figure out how to keep that middle locked in on her when she needs to bust him in his mouth. Im saying it like that because hes dangerous. Hes dangerous to particular people the history of the country is such that we Cant Play Fast And Loose with it. But isnt It Incumbent on all of us to protect the people who are endangered by him . They never have. Thats the rub. They never have. And so part of what we have to do in the midst of this is to engage fwh a deepseated political calculus, right, even though we know she has to get the mid. Weve got to come out and find out how to turn out in large historic number us because weve got to keep him out of office because if he comes in, our babies are going to be in danger because remember those young children are going to grow up with the memory of having to not go to school for the threat of bombs and somebody told them that their moms and dads eat cats and dogs. Ill get myself together in a minute, claire. Okay. Deep breaths. I understand what youre saying. It is the hardest thing to reconcile is how much i love this country and the values that we hold dear and that so many in this country are attracted to the dark, dark horrible vision he is putting out, and the reality of that is really sobering and its really hard to figure out. And i think part of it is that people for a lot of complicated reasons, microchips and automatiOn And technology, you know, theyre not doing better than their parents did and somehow they feel like theyve been dealt an unfair hand, and all of the Progress Weve made, electing Barack Obama President , this amazing intelligent poised gifted woman being the nominee of our party, the people who feel like americas left them behind want to vent, and thats all that huckster, thats all hes selling is you can vent with me. You can vent things you cant say out loud, that you couldnt say out loud. You can say racist things. You can say things like were going to deport people who are married to american citizens. Were going to have a Lawlessness Hour where were going to torture people. I didnt play it. Let me land this where i think Harris Strategics have their heads. Okay, you may have thought it was okay in 2016, i hear you, and you may have felt about that in 20, okay . But for whatever reason that i a peeled to you, let me offer you Something Difference now. Shes not coming for his base. She said nothing about his voters. She just said hes not the guy anymore. His rallies stink and thyre boring. Shes saying im not going to hate you for liking him in 2016 and 20, but come along. Enough is enough. Its the onetwo punch and incompetence. Part of the challenge is because Kamala Harris rose to the top of the ticket so late in the game, shes trying to introduce i know its hard for us to believe given the amount of time shes spent on the national stage, there are voters who do not have a formulated opinion of her, and yet here we are. Shes trying to say to the voter whos asking themselves, okay, when theres a crisis, who do i want behind the resolute desk. Everything, biography, policy, it all comes together, and that sort of undefinable quality, is this a person who i believe can take Charge And Lead . And when that happens, i mean, i think her Approval Rating has soared faster and higher in answering the questions, its moved farther than anyone. Thats part of why she wants another debate, but that so you guys just settled it. I think today she should go to a camera and say, Mentally Impaired, never heard of that one, donald, but if im so impaired, why dont you debate me tomorrow and friday and sunday. We worked it out. I think its unfortunate. I think the first Thing Governor Walz needs to do is be tim. Tim is a good man, a great governor, hell be an amazing Vice President of the united states, a person who exudes kindness and empathy, and the way he lives in minnesota lifts every single person up regardless of their party. He you dont see him attacking people for their life choices. On the other side you have Jd Vance, the least popular candidate for vp in my lifetime and hes worked really hard to get there. Condescending, Acting Superior to everyone, calling people names, going after groups of people. Because they didnt have kids. George washington didnt have biological kids, the father of our country. So i think tim needs to do two things. Number one, be him. Number two, make sure hes talking about policy and the issues that matter. Take Donald Trumps admission that he wants to tear the affordable Care Act away and replace it with what he says is just some thoughts, a concept of a plan. The affordable Care Act provided expanded medicate coverage to 600,000 kentuckians who got Health Care for the very first time. More than 1. 6 million kentuckians have a preexisting conditiOn And are now kicked off their Health Care coverage. Thats a whole lot of people who would lose the ability to go to a doctor, one of the most fundamental things to every single family. Those are the types of areas where tim has led, expanded Health Care, and he can point to the damage this administration would cause. Youre on a roll. Keep going. First president ial candidate. Its really addressed to affordable housing in a real way when rents are too high, homeownership is difficult. It addresses both supply and the cost. Meanwhile Donald Trump is asked about his plans on the auto industry, and his answer is i was once Man Of The Year in michigan or hes asked about his economic plan, and he says shes bad at debates. Youve got one side here thats offering real policy, that the questions are lets dive into your fourth bullet point. And the other side that hasnt really been able to answer any questions at all. Look at Jd Vance and the answer to childcare, which is apparently grandparents helping out more. Thats not a real serious solution. I tell you i do think theres a reason they dont talk about policy. That is Donald Trump and Jd Vance. Its because project 2025 is their policy. They just dont want to admit it. How much do you think that Governor Walz should keep the focus on what youre talking about because it feels like Jd Vances reflex is these deeply personal nasty attacks, that hes likely to go after Governor Walzs Record And Cherry picking and mischaracterizing things. That seems to be the only Thing Theyve landed on in terms of how to attack Governor Walz. In your view in a strategic manner, is it deflecting and how Vice President harris is focused on peoples lives and how trump has disgraced them or is that something that you think Governor Walz because a lot of americans may be watching dont know him very well needs to defend Tomorrow Night . I think its about striking the right balance, which Vice President harris did masterfully in her debate. I know why Donald Trump Wont Debate her again. Thats because she in terms wed use whooped him. It was a massive win. I think the balance should be the same. First Governor Walz has to talk about how were not going back, about the problems and real threats that a second Trump Presidency would bring and how it would continue to divide the country with neighbors arguing with neighbors, but hes got to spend more time talking about the vision forward, getting beyond this nastiness, turning down the temperature. Thats what people really want. We know its not going to stop until we move beyond this precedential election, move beyond former President Trump being in the national dialogue, move beyond speeches where most of the time is spent trying to insult someone or calling them names that we would say is wrong in middle school. And i think its really going to be a challenge for Tim Walz to be able to counter what he is going to bring at the same time stay really likable and relatable, and then also instill confidence in the american people that hes the better one to be in the wings in Case Something were to happen to the president. So i just think we need to lower expectations a little bit because then we can all be pleasantly surprised if im wrong and that Tim Walz just mops the floor with him the same way Kamala Harris mopped the floor with Donald Trump. I do think it would be funny if he could figure out a way to do it. You know, j. D. Vance has been lecturing women about what they should and shouldnt do to be happy in their lives in ways that are disgusting. And one of the ways he said is you need to stay in your marriage. Well, i wonder if hes had that discussion with Donald Trump because Donald Trump has switched out for a younger, prettier woman with adultery not once but twice in his life and then committed all types of adultery on top of that. So when j. D. Vance is lecturing people, i hope tim figures out a way to say have you tried lecturing your boss on this thing that youre trying to do the women of america, that maybe he ought to figure out how to quit switching out wives like other men change shirts . It is in a single utterance that again, that statement that j. D. Vance made about women should stay in violent marriages, that is not the work of a pulitzer prizewinning investigative journalist. That is something that the culture, maybe the manosphere as someone calls it, created a Safe Space for j. D. Vance to say on stage into a microphone. And that is his view. Ive not heard him disavow the view. His View Isnt just that he personally supports a national Abortion Ban, that he personally supports legislation that would render ivf logistically impossible and unaffordable and impossible. That he believes that a woman being beaten by her husband should stay in that marriage. That is his view today. Its absolutely absurd on so many different levels. If Tim Walz, Governor Walz, can figure out how to call into question or call attention to his inconsistencies, j. D. Vances inconsistencies, and do it in a way thats powerful and punchy, it will be great. And i think also what we hear from the j. D. Vances and others, theyre simply rebranding the critique of 1960s feminism. So instead of talking about braburning women who dont want to have it, theyve just figured out another kind of way of describing that critique. And so what weve been hearing over and over again from thiS Side, from the maga folk, is a rebranding project. Theyve rebranded the critique of feminism. Theyve rebranded the critique of lgbtq plus. Theyve rebranded the critique of the Civil Rights movement. Thats all it is, new language. And so part of what we have to do is to figure out how to say that without sounding like an egghead. Yeah. Youre not an egghead. And i think to this point, though, i think the idea of going back is very natural to Governor Walz. And i think the other half of that, right . The bra burning, you know, is sort of up here. But what was down here was women dying of backalley abortions. So what the iconography may have been was here. But sex became deadly. If you got pregnant and needed an abortion. Thats what the vision takes us back to. Thats exactly right. And i think Tim Walz is going to he will have the ability Tomorrow Night to frame that issue i think very powerfully. And if he can stay as you know, the smile really helps. You know, when you think of j. D. Vance, you dont think of a guy smiling. I dont think ive seen him smile. I think he lectures a lot. He lectures a lot. And Tim Walz doesnt lecture. He relates. And you know, i think when Governor Beshear said tim needs to be tim, i think one of the themes of the Debate Prep for the Walz Team is, you know, the north star, let Tim Walz be Tim Walz. And i think if he does that it will be fine. I just think i just want everyones expectations to come down just a little bit because its hard for i think Tim Walz to meet the expectations that are being put out there for him right now. And some of it and well talk about this tomorrow. Well have another day leading into this. Is that Fact Checking is not going to be a thing. So it is up to the campaign not rooted in lies to do work that in some other different structured debates is part of what the moderators did. Thats not a feature of this debate. This was so good. At least 121 people are dead, dozens are missing, efforts to find Loved Ones increasingly difficult at the moment. 2 Million customers are still without power. Georgias governor described the devastation this way, as a, quote, 250mile tornado that bulldozed its way through the area. Homes swept away. Roads many of them made impassable. Livelihoods destroyed. There are people right now wondering whether or not or how theyll ever get back on their feet, having already directed fema and other federal assets to attend hardhit communities. Oh, heres Vice President harris at fema. Lets listen. Deputy administrator hooks, i thank you. And everyone here. For their leadership. As i said briefly, i know who was here. I know what you each do. And you are so selfless in the way you serve our country. And in particular at times like this pem who are just so desperately in need of help, support and just knowing that the resources are going to be expedited to them as they need it in their most vulnerable situation when their families have been at risk, where their homes may have been destroyed, where they lack just basic essential needs. You all do that work around the clock as though these are your family members. I know how you work and i know how hard you work. So im here mostly to thank you all for all that you do, everyone who is here and everyone whos on the ground in the region at the moment. And im here to also talk about where we are based on the briefings i have been receiving over the last couple of days. I have received regular briefings on the impact of Hurricane Helene including from administrator kriswell. And over the past 24 hours i have spoken with Governor Kemp of georgia, Governor Cooper of North Carolina, and many local officials. I have shared with them that we will do everything in our power to help communities respond and recover. And ive shared with them that i plan to be on the ground as soon as possible. But as soon as possible without disrupting any Emergency Response operations because that must be the highest priority and the first order of business. The devastation from Hurricane Helene is immense. Millions of americans are without power. Thousands of families have lost their homes. Entire neighborhoods have been destroyed. Major roads have been blocked or damaged, leaving entire towns inaccessible at this very moment. Already nearly 100 people have been confirmed dead and hundreds more are missing. The destruction we have seen in alabama, florida, georgia, North Carolina, south carolina, tennessee and virginia is heartbreaking. In coordination with state and local Officials President biden and i will continue to make sure that communities have the support and the resources that they need not only to respond to this storm and its immediate aftermath but also the resources they will need to recover. So far more than 3,300 federal personnel are on the ground to assist with recovery efforts. They are deploying food, water, and generators. And we continue to work with teams on the ground to restore Water And Power as quickly as possible. To everyone who has been impacted by this storm and to all of those of you who are rightly feeling overwhelmed by the destructiOn And the loss, our nation is with you. And President Biden and i and all of the folks behind me are with you. We will continue to do everything we can to help you recover and to help you rebuild, no matter how long it takes. And i do believe the true character of a nation is revealed in moments of hardship. Over the past few days our nation has endured some of the worst Destruction And Devastation that we have seen in quite some time. And we have responded with our best. With the best folks who are on the ground and here, doing the kind of work that is about rising to a moment of crisis to do everything we can to lift up folks who deserve to be seen and heard. Communities have been coming together. People are checking in on their neighbors. Families are opening their doors to strangers in need. And as they always do, our first responders are working around the clock, putting their own lives at risk to keep our communities safe. Moments like this remind us we have so much more in common than what separates us and the true membership of our leadership, each one of us, is based on lifting other folks up, knowing how we can make a difference. This is the thing you carry with you, the plight of your constituents. These are folks who are truly, truly hurting and suffering. And the Vice President came some voice to that today. Yeah. I think its really important that she does come out and explain that she is absolutely on top of it because there may be those that expect her to kind of show up in these spaces but if youve ever been anywhere that the president or Vice President is you know how many local resources are drained because they have to keep them secure. And so i appreciate how thoughtful theyre being about this in making it clear that yes, she will get there but she doesnt want to disturb because those Emergency Resources need to be used for the people on the ground and the best thing that she can do is make sure that the money is going to flow as quickly and as effortlessly out of d. C. Into those areas that are hardest hit. And charlie sykes, even if it was her desire to be on the ground with local officials are really pleading with according to Politico Playbook is that folks dont come. Quote, the people in my district really dont want to see politicians, said republican representative Chuck Edwards whose mountainous western North Carolina district has been ravaged by flooding. Quote, they want to see water, food, Cell Towers and power restored and the ability to contact their Loved Ones. Photo ops are not whats needed. North carolinas democratic governor Roy Cooper agreed. Quote, i told the president that we did not need elected officials that require a lot of Security And Attention because we need to make sure that were getting the work done on the ground. People are still trapped. Its not the right time for them to come. Charlie. Well, somebody ought to send that memo to Donald Trump because he is going to be there and hes going to try to exploit this. Hes already making up stories about the administration not being accessible. Look, as you well know, nicolle, events like this are a major test of president ial leadership. And they can be decisive. You know, im listening and watching some of the republican commentators saying this is going to be the Bidenharris Katrina all over again. Well, not necessarily. I think that theres a little bit of projection going on there. I remember how the Obama Administration handled sandy back in 2012, and that was something that i had i helped him. Im sorry to put this in political terms but its almost inevitable to do that. Look, they have to be as aggressive as possible. They have to be as visible as possible. And i understand that they dont want to be a distraction. But the reality is that president ial leadership requires presence. And at some point they have to demonstrate that they are in charge and that they are in fact present to this national disaster. And im not saying that they need to be, you know, doing the kind of and i think the contrast with the Trump Approach is going to be rather dramatic. Hes going to be throwing fish sticks. Hes going to be throwing Paper Towels. They have to be there substantively providing aid and making it clear exactly what the federal government is going to do to help americans in need. This is one of those moments where americans are going to look at the government and say can you get the job done, are you competent, are you strong and you are caring about it. And again, at some Point Presence has to be part of that. Charlie sykes, no apologies ever needed on this show. And certainly not in my direction. And with 36 days until we determine whether the country remains a country that decides who leads it every four years in an election, no one should hold anything back. Since you raised politics, though, i will go there. Angelo, this is what project 2025, the Policy Blueprint that would animate the Trump Presidency, says about noaa and all of the ages that would protect people from catastrophic storms like this. Ill read from the hills reporting. Quote, project 2025, a controversial plan that seeks to inform a future conservative administration, calls for the breakup of the national atmospheric and oceanic administration, noaa. Noaa houses the national Weather Service. The plan, spearheaded by the heritage foundation, says that the Weather Service should fully commercialize its forecasting operations and focus on providing data to private companies. It also calls for a review of the work of the national hurricane center. It acknowledges that the center provides important public Safety Administration but also says its data should be presented neutrally rather than in a way that makes points about Climate Change. And on The Point Of Climate Change i think trump said over The Weekend that Climate Change is good because there would be, quote, more oceanfront property. So thats the choice in 36 days. Yeah. I mean, look, theres two project 2025 tieins. One is the one you just read which is that they want to get rid of noaa or greatly reduce its output because it sort of reinforces the narrative about Climate Change too much. I mean, thats pretty standard rightwing fare. Over the last few weeks rightwing influencers have been complaining that this hurricane is being overhyped as a design to prop up Climate Change. I mean, that is standard agenda. It obviously has devastating consequences. The other tiein that is really disturbing is that russell vought, who is writing the playbook, the 100day agenda, the Stepbystep Process for the first 100 days of the administration, the implementation guide for project 2025, when he was the Omb Director he made tweaks to the way that Disaster Relief was distributed that blocked it the Disaster Relief from getting to Puerto Rico after that major hurricane, where it killed thousands of individuals. And other changes so that it was harder for Disaster Relief to get out there. There are sort of two prongs here. One is to erode science and undermine and attack anything that reinforces Climate Change. And thats the Noaa Stuff you were reading. And the other element is to use the levers of Government Power to make it harder for basic Disaster Relief to get to those most in need. And in their minds its usually democrats or people that vote against them. Its either going to be an instrument of revenge with the project 2025 tiein or a Policy Aspiration to reinforce the line that Climate Change is a hoax. Congressman, let me ask you to weigh in on both those points. About the power of showing up as soon as its feasible. We all understand why a protective detail drains resources. But if youre a desperate person hurting someone with a Pail Or Rowboat or bottle of water is a welcome sight. How do you balance those things . I think it is tough and i think it is important she explained why shes not there. I think it is also important we point out one of the things you mentioned about project 2025 is always seemingly this us against them. Right . And i think when we heard from the Vice President is that we heard someone that was willing to talk to whomever because she understands that she is the Vice President of the united states. Shes talked to those republican governors, and im sure shes talking to republican house members because its not about politics. When you are sitting in the White House or anywhere near it, it should be about everyone in this country. And i think thats what she stands for, is this unit. It doesnt come down to was this a state that supported me, was this a statement that was against me. And it also doesnt come down to photo ops. Obviously, theres a lot of information that we have to disseminate to make sure that people understand that she wants to do the things of substance. But if she can go out and say in record time we were able to get this to you or that to you. I pi that that would be really powerful. And also i think it is important that people see her because when theyre hurting i think that they do want to feel as if the president or the Vice President isnt so far away from them. And we know that when she shows up its all real. People respond to her. Weve seen her interacting versus trump. You know, its for show. Its never anything that is comforting that comes out of him. And i dont think that he will feel the connection or the people will feel the connection to him. I am hopeful that the resources will start flowing and emergency crews can get to help people, get them relocated, start to find people that are missing. But i really dont want to distract from that because we dont know if there are people that are missing and are still alive. And you may literally take Law Enforcement away from being able to find somebody and they ultimately may perish. Let me show you what trump looks like at the do you remember this . Handing out Paper Towel in Puerto Rico. Do we have that footage . Here he is. Congress woman, you dont think that feels good to get it still makes me mad all these years later. And its an indefensible display of performative politics. This was i think after a long stretch of being described as callous and disinterested, helping the people of Puerto Rico. And when he went, this is what he did. If you go to baseball games they sometimes distribute tshirts that way. The same way. I think that is true. Weve seen her just being you know, when we saw the Video Footage of her shopping for the spices. I mean, this is someone who truly is empathetic and real and really cares. I mean, she is running to become the president of the united states because she absolutely believes in the american dream. She is the epitome of the american dream. And i think that she wants to instill hope and she wants to instill optimism instead of going in to disparage. And thats what hes going to do. Hes going to go down there, hes going to try to tear us all apart and say negative things when people really want to be uplifted in this moment. You know, charlie, let me come back to you because i worry, right . That this is a moment when people are on their knees and their dreams have literally been swept away along with, heaven forbid, some of their Loved Ones, all their belongings. And when you are desperate you it does make an impression when someone shows up. I understand the need to show up when its safe. Uz r because it is exactly as the congresswoman describes. If you have to choose between protecting a president or Vice President or president ial candidate in the wake of what happened to former President Trump this summer, you have to protect the candidate and the president. We live in a time where the threats are real. But that person could have been the person that would make a difference in a Search And Rescue mission. It is Life And Death decisionmaking that only one of the two candidates take seriously. I wonder if you can speak to that. We actually just heard that president Joe Biden will be there on wednesday. So it could be just a matter of timing these out so they dont drain resources. But say a little more about the opportunity that she has to show what the congresswoman is describing, that she cares. Well, its an opportunity and its a challenge. You get this wrong and it could be disastrous. The opportunity is to show that in fact she is in charge and that she is empathetic and to do that you do have to show up. And again, im not challenging any of the concerns about the logistics of it. But the reality is that you have to be present and you have to show up and that is an opportunity for her. And again, the contrast is going to be dramatic. You made a really interesting point a few minutes ago. This is and again, im going back to the politics here. Donald trump has not only mocked the idea of climbed change. He has suggested that, well, Climate Change is okay because it provides more beachfront property. This is a moment not necessarily for Kamala Harris or for Joe Biden to make this point but for other surrogates to say look, this is somebody who is not taking this seriously in any way. And also i think its also a moment to remind people that just a week ago Donald Trump was telling republicans in congress to shut down the federal government. You have representatives who voted to shut down the federal government in the midst of hurricane season. Now, lets just take a deep breath and imagine what would have happened if Donald Trump had gotten his way and we would have shut down the federal government when this horrific biblical disaster occurred that affects so many americans . So again, its a challenge but its an opportunity. And the reality is that this is going to play into into the political season. But the Number One priority has to be saving american lives and basically showing americans that stuff works, government works, that america still works, that america is going to take care of other americans. And that is again a major challenge but its also an opportunity for somebody who can say i take seriously this crisis and i take seriously the role of government and im not mocking it and im not trying to take it down, im not trying to dismantle it. I have to sneak in a break. But our memories have been triggered of how Donald Trump as president thought so little of the lives that were in the path of a storm that he altered the path. Tell me what you see and hear on the Campaign Trail. Oh, man. Women are fired up. I mean, women youve got taylor swift. Youve got stevie nicks. But women everywhere are fired up. And its not just women. Its girls. You know, its been interesting to see the intergenerational activity thats taking place. Seeing grandmothers bringing their granddaughters out and getting involved in politics because the grandmothers are looking at it like i am fighting for your future. You need to know whats going on. And so thats been really inspirational too, just to see so many young girls being kind of engaged, and there are those that dont even understand what this is all about but for them its been described as were fighting for your freedom. And i can tell you that i never anticipated a day that i would be on a president ial campaign and i would be in wisconsin and id be there with a kate cox, someone else from texas, having to share her very personal and horrific story. And you know, when remind people about kates story. Kate cox is a shero in my word. She is a dallasite, and she truly was trying to bring forth another child. And kudos to her, she actually is pregnant now with her third child. And so you know, were praying for a safe and healthy delivery. But there were complications and there were issues and she sought help from the courts in texas trying to get the Supreme Court to say that there was an exception because there was an emergency and they turned her down. And she had to flee the state. But she had to share this very personal thing in a very public way because she understood the level of privilege that she shared. And ive got to say theres more than just kate cox. Weve got dr. Genard as well as others that are truly saying we are standing on the front lines of this because we dont want others to have to suffer the fate of what weve just talked about down in georgia. We know not everyone will have this opportunity. We know that there will be women that unfortunately will sit at home and die because they dont know what their options are or as has been described those that have been bleeding out as we talk about amanda za worseky, another texan who literally was said until youre about dead were not going to help you. Its almost like were living in a third world country. And were not. Just the women, though. Just the women. And on this tour ive heard so many stories. The young lady that spoke before me, laura marcinkus, it was my very first time hearing her story. And it brought me to tears. I was supposed to get on the mic. I had prepared remarks, all the things. And i told them im probably about to be known as the Cry Baby of congress because i was struggling to compose myself. Because this is a very real thing. This isnt about games for me. Its not about games for the harriswalz ticket. We are literally trying to save lives because were losing them. Whether were talking about the storms that are caused because we have people that want to pretend as if climate Change Isnt real and they dont want to make the investments and make sure we can protect our flfrt or whether were talking about women that have been degraded to secondrate citizens in this country that will not have an opportunity, Number One, to determine whether or not they can live. Number two, determine whether or not they bring forth a family when they can afford one. Or determine that when they have been victimized whether or not the government will then seek to victimize them again. This isnt a game for us because we know what lies on the other side. We know we werent necessarily born with 400 Million that was given to us and therefore we may end up in a situation where even if theres a national Abortion Ban theres people on trumpS Side that can always go somewhere else. Thats not a reality for all of us. And honestly we shouldnt have to leave our states. We should have elected officials that will take care of us because that is what they have promised to do. Once you swear that oath you are supposed to protect and defend against all enemies. And right now it definitely feels as if we have a lot of people that are working against us and not working for us. Its amazing. You know, the politics are so clear. Youve got republicans opposing the criminalizing of abortion Health Care, but the women who are suffering and losing their lives while the politics catch up with the policy is truly terrifying. And i love that youre out there with them. It comes as the republican governor of ohio, inexplicably still a trump supporter, still a vote in the Yes Column for Donald Trump, says today that hes grown more and more infuriated, thats his word, at Donald Trump and j. D. Vance for calling the immigrants illegal. Because their comments are, quote, just hurtful. Because, quote, people listen and they hear that hes kicking everybody out, anybody whos not born here. Trump and vance are also being criminally charged now for the resulting devastating harm they have caused springfield, ohio including 33 Bomb Threats and massive disruptions to Public Services. By, quote, knowingly spreading a false and dangerous narrative. Joining us now, cofounder of the haitian Bridge Alliance who filed the charges against Donald Trump and j. D. Tell me about the lawsuit. Do you want to both chime . Ill start with you first. Tell me about the suffering thats happening. Thank you so much. Its really about accountability. To make sure that the people in power, people who have an immense amount of power, understand theyre not Above The Law, understand that when they attack and try to terrorize vulnerable communities we will be there, well push back. The reality is we cannot continue to allow in 2024 this extreme rhetorics that are white Supremacist And Racist to continue. Its almost disorienting, though, that the source of the lie has been reported out by none other than the wall street journal, proven to be a lie, and you still have the nominee of the republican party repeating the lies. What happens to the families living there . Its incredibly painful. I can share with you one story that is currently. A man went to a haitian family, the father and the son were in the garage and he pulled a gun on them. In springfield, ohio. And currently there are criminal charge against this gentleman, who sees them as what 45 and his Running Mate are spreading the lie, that they have created for this type of purpose, so now we have peoples lives in real danger. When you are standing at Home And Somebody comes with a gun because of narrative that are being spread and making them believe that we i am haitian myself. Im haitian american. As a black woman in this united states this is frightening, this is scary, and we are going to push back because those peoples lives must be protected. And when we have someone like senator vance, who is the senator in springfield, in ohio, instead of making sure people are protected, people who have come to springfield to revitalize the city, to bring all they have and give every ounce of who they are to the city, and pay their taxes, and bring the culture i hear 45 talk about them coming over, you know, diluting the culture. The culture of the united states is a multicultural culture. And the haitian have always been a part of this country. We have given a blood for this united states of america. And those people who have come here that are in springfield have given everything, paying their taxes and revitalizing a dying city. And wanted, desperately wanted by the republican leaders of the town and the state. Tell me what the lawsuit alleges and what the next steps are. To be clear, nicolle, and thank you for having us on, these are criminal charges, not a civil lawsuit. These are criminal charges that under Ohio Law can be initiated by a private citizen. And in this case miss jozef and the haitian Bridge Alliance initiated them because the prosecutor was doing nothing. In fact, the prosecutors stilling done nothing despite us consolidating all those facts in an affidavit for the prosecutors. So what were trying to accomplish is accountability under the Rule Of Law and to see equal justice under law. In ohio if Anybody Else, if any of your viewers, if i, if you, or anybody had wreaked the kind of havoc that Trump And Vance have with the persistent, relentless dissemination of false statements resulting in 33 Bomb Threats, school, hospital, city hall, college closures, threats to the mayor and his family, On And On And on, if Anybody Else had done that theyd be in jail already. They would have been arrested. And they would have been charged for disrupting Public Service for making false alarms, for inducing panic. We amended the charges to include that changed. So what we want to see is accountability under the Rule Of Law. And one would hope that would have a Deterrent Effect on these people although they seem impervious to reason even from the governor and mayor. You deal all the time with disinformation from republicans. Yeah. And theres no excuse for it. And you have access to security. And im not putting it on the same level. But i just want to make i appoint about the victims here. There are children who at very young ages are having to ask their parents whats a Bomb Threat . Why is there a Bomb Threat at my school . Why would anyone want to hurt my elementary Elementary Schools and the middle schools were two three of the first places targeted with Bomb Threats. Yeah. Im infuriated because the fact that this is not disqualifying is mindblowing to me. Exactly. I dont know how it is that you say you want to be the president of the united states and literally you are attacking people from within. Why is this Race Close . Like we need to be very honest with ourselves and talk about this. Because the reality is that this is a guy who has shown himself to be a criminal, not just accused of criminality but he is a criminal who continues to break the law. I mean, Anybody Else would have been under the jail, to be perfectly honest. With the actions that hes taken. Hes always stoking hate and hes always stoking violence from January 6th to going after prosecutors to going after judges. Like this guy is the definition of lawlessness. And the fact that these people have contributed to our economy, that is what this country has always been based upon. When i go out and people want to talk to me about the border, i ask them, when is the last time you raised somebody to go work on a farm . And theres crickets. Because that is who has made sure weve always been able to put food on our table. It doesnt just show up at the grocery store. So the fact you want to go after these people that are seeking a better life for themselves because we know the turmoil that exists in haiti and they did it the right way, right now they are conflating who it is thats coming into this country as if everyone thats coming in is coming in to tear us down when the majority of the people that are coming in are coming in to contribute and make sure that while we are, yes, still facing inflation if youve got somebody that is willing to work some of these jobs because they just want an honest living, they just want to be able to take care of their families, guess what, that keeps costs down. But at the end of the day lets talk about what it is that we want out of a leader of this country. Do we want someone who knows that hes spreading lies and he does it anyway . Is that acceptable . Like where are we in this country . And that is why i wont sleep until November 6th because im going to do everything that i can to keep him out because he is a threat to everybody in this country. I want to ask you really quickly, subodh, what is the Threat Environment like today . Well, its not good. I mean, what theyre doing is theyre persisting in disseminating lies and they have absolutely no shame whatsoever. Even with the governor and the mayor begging them to stop. And so we believe that the haitian and its not just the haitian community. The haitian community remains under constant threat. Its the community at large. Right. Theyve torn apart this community and parents having to hold their kids home from school regardless of race, having to pick their kids up when the school is evacuated. College students having to attend online. Hospitals being locked down. I mean, this is just beyond the pale. And what really just crushes me as a former federal prosecutor, i believe in equal justice under law and i know with certainty that if you substituted any other name other than Donald Trump and j. D. Vance who had made persistent and repeated utterances that resulted in this kind of havoc, theres no question they would have already been charged. So the real message right now, the real question for all of us is are the judges before whom this affidavit has been filed and will the prosecutor after that live up to the promise of equal justice under law . Thats the question. And if the answer to that is no, we wont, then let them be explicit about that. Thats why were forcing this issue as private citizens, because we need to finally have an answer to that question. Are these guys Above The Law . Because ill tell you, Anybody Else who did this, ive got reams of examples of cases where people did far less than this, you know, mumbled something stupid in a school and they get charged. So this is really cataclysmic, the way this has been handled by Trump And Vance, where they know that its false but they persist. And that is really the crime. Free speech is protected.
