In wisconsin Liz Cheney the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney gave her full throated and full hearted endorsement of Vice President harris. Cheney also explained why former president trumps actions on January 6th disqualified him from being president again and she talked about the responsibility that all americans have to uphold our nations democracy. I volunteered on my first president ial campaign. I already told you how old i am, so ill tell you. In 1976 when i was 10 years old and i was sealing envelopes for president fords reelection campaign, i cast my first vote ever in 1984 for ronald reagan. I served in the State Department in both bush administrations, and i served in the united States House of representatives for three terms including as a third highest ranking republican inhouse leadership. So, in other words, i was a republican even before Donald Trump started spray tanning. History teaches us again and again that democracies can fall. They fall to popialists. They fall to strong men, strong men who beguile their citizens with Conspiracy Theories and false emergencies. As my friend taught us, the lesson of our history is that the task of merely maintaining strong and sturdy, the structures of our constitutional order is unending. It is the continuing and ceaseless work of every generation. And that responsibility now falls on All Of Us in this election. We have a shared commitment a shared commitment as americans to ensuring that future generations live in a nation where power is transferred peacefully, where our leaders are men and women of good faith, and where our public servants set aside partisan battles to do whats right for this country. So today i ask all of you here and everyone listening across this great country to join us. I ask you to meet this moment. I ask you to stand in truth, to reject the depraved cruelty of Donald Trump. And i ask you instead to help us elect Kamala Harris for president. I have sworn an oath to uphold the constitution six times in my career including as Vice President , as a united states senator, and as the top Law Enforcement Officer of the largest state in our country. Responsible for upholding and enforcing the laws of the state and the laws wavered in upholding that oath, and i have always executed it faithfully and without reservation. And therein lies the profound difference between Donald Trump and me. He, who violated the oath to uphold the constitution of the united states of america. And make no mistake, he, who if given the chance, would violate it again. Donald trump lost the 2020 election. And as you have heard and know, he refused to accept the will of the people and the results of an election that was free and fair. As you have heard, he sent an armed mob to the united states capitol, where they assaulted Law Enforcement Officers. He threatened the life of his own Vice President and refused to engage in the peaceful transfer of power. And let us be clear about how he intends to use power if elected again. He has called for jailing journalists, political opponents, anything he sees and deems as being an enemy. He has pledged to destroy the independence of the department of justice. And he called for deploying our active Duty Military against our own citizens. I know the vast majority of us regardless of your political party agree we must hold sacred americas fundamental principles from the Rule Of Law to free and fair elections. And if you share if you share that view, no matter your political party, there is a place for you with us and in this campaign because those principles i know unite us across party lines. Tell us your thoughts, and what sort of impact you think it could have. Well, my first thought even rewatching their clips you just played is that this is a collaboration based in survival. We hear the talk about preserving democracy and protecting the constitution repeatedly from Liz Cheney and Vice President harris on stage yesterday, and it comes down to the reality that independents, republicans, and democrats understand that alignment in this moment is critical to the survival of the basic institutions in which allow for debate on policy ideas. Because what theyre saying in this moment is not that we agree on everything, but they agree that Donald Trump is the threat, and thats the reason we come together for the Sake And Survival for our democracy and constitution. And i think the impact is going to be broad, because keep in mind democrats have run on protecting democracy in 2020, 2023. Right, this has shown across partisan lines and age, race, and demographics, its a message that does appeal far and wide. So what Vice President harris is looking to do in this campaign, which is operating within the margin of error in polls across Swing States is welcome every president who wants to come on in into her campaign. The other thing we heard from Vice President harris on that stage is her long history of public service. And swhee talked about being the top Law Enforcement official that has right. When she talked being a senator and serving in multiple capacities up and down the government, i expect her to continue to shine through and expect her to continue to deploy surrogates from Law Enforcement, surrogates who are veterans, men who are out front supporting her candidacy because they believe shes the best person to lead this nation in the future. Back to politics now, and Donald Trump hit the Campaign Trail in Michigan Yesterday and continued to spread lies about the biden Administrations Response to Hurricane Helene while bragging about he handled disasters while president. After falsely claiming earlier in the week that President Biden was ignoring calls from georgias republican governor, trump told his Supporters Yesterday that the White House has no money to spend on Disaster Relief because its all being spent on illegal immigrants. We had the best four years with hurricanes. We took care of people. Now we have a horrific disaster in North Carolina, georgia, south carolina, alabama, tennessee, florida, and virginia. Thats how big this hurricane was. And the harrisbiden administration says they dont have any money. They spent it all on they spent all of their money. They have almost no money because they spent it all on illegal migrants. They stole the Fema Money just like they stole it from a bank so they could give it to their illegal immigrants that they want to have vote for them this season. There is, of course, no evidence to support trumps claims there, but thats not stopping some on the right including Elon Musk from spreading them. As to his own record two former aides tell politico while he was president he had to be convinced to Disaster Aid for states led by democrats. Who could forget him shooting Paper Towels like basketballs during a brief on Storm Damage. Eli, lets just talk about this Donald Trump again trying to politicize the response to the hurricane. Obviously a terrible, terrible storm. Were still learning the impact. But this just outright lies and another new low. More of the same, honestly. And sort of reminder to people who may have hazy memories of the trump years about how this president responded to a lot of disasters. Talking earlier this week suggesting the governor of Georgia Hadnt gotten what he needed from the administration when Brian Kemp went out and said he did. In a way if feels like more trump projection. Hes telling people that is actually how he handle. You mentioned the Free Throws in Puerto Rico and acting like a rock star, throwing a Guitar Pickoff the stage, giving People Paper towels and disputed the Death Toll in Puerto Rico, too, held up the aid for a long time. There was an issue in california with the fire mitigation, holding up the money there. Our Reporting Yesterday also about not wanting to do it because he thought california was a blue state. And also, you know, this just sort of Goes On And on. Im thinking about the sharpy on the Hurricane Map and turning the Disaster Response and disaster prep operations into a story about himself because he refused to acknowledge that he misspoke about where a storm was projected to go. This is just a reminder what the Trump Presidency was like and comes in contrast to President Biden and Vice President harris being on the ground in these states. But, you know, this also has some effect. There are people spreading all kinds of Conspiracy Theories and lies online. And so, you know, in the final weeks of this campaign, there are going to be a lot of people receiving misinformation about this. And, you know, we can sit here on television and say that trump is lying, hes politicizing the storm, but voters will draw their own conclusion, and not to trumps benefit, but this may also result in the spread of misinformation and up to the Harris Campaign and the White House to make sure they communicate what the actual facts of this are. No question, Conspiracy Theories running rampant, outright lies running rampant on social media. It cant be overstated, this is a big deal. There would have been significant economic impact. And the politics of it, harris really avoided what could have been a disaster here. Talk to us a little bit about that and how theyre feeling. Also, though, this gives us a struggle into some of the unions. The Firefighters Union Yesterday decided not to endorse either candidate. The Harris Team thought it was coming for her as a reflection of her struggles with White Working Class male voters. Thats an important point. First on the strike and resolution, cleary a sort of political Land Mine avoided here for Biden And Harris. Had there been a Work Stoppage that lasted for several days or weeks, you know, in the final months of the campaign and really slowed down, shipping, commerce, that would have been a problem. If the price of goods was going up, Kamala Harris made so much progress, she basically negated trumps advantage who best to tackle inflation by putting out her economic plan. If thered been a Work Stop and prices were going up, thats going to hurt the administration in charge at the end of the day. Avoiding that and getting to a resolution is helpful and Biden And Harris and also trump, they were all on the same page here about supporting it Dock Workers. But Biden And Harris, Joe Biden has said his has been the most prolabor administration in history. Hes been consistent about supporting collective bargaining, supporting the rights of workers, and show has harris. Harris fallen in line oaked his line on this, the administration worked on this. The Acting Secretary was really the Point Person here in sort of helping to get this to a resolution. For all of their efforts to support labor, this is not really working to help Kamala Harris, at least in terms of actual endorsements from organizations. The biden administration bails out the Teamsters Pension Fund and the teamsters are sitting out the election and not endorsing. And yesterday the Firefighters Union on the same lines. Delivering for these groups results, it doesnt necessarily guarantee that the groups are going to endorse you at the end of the day because this is becoming i think more cultural for a lot of the membership of these labor unions, and theyre sort of reflecting of the broader problems that democrats have. Maybe Joe Biden was a little better situated to appeal to those white Blue Collar Workers that make up a lot of labeler unions than harris is. But youre seeing, you know, after decades where sort of democrats seem to have big labor on their side, that no matter what the difference is in policies, and the differences are stark here between the two parties and two nominees. But in spite of that, the cultural divide may be what is leading a lot of the Rank And File members to say we want the union to sit this out and let us make our own decisions. So you have to assume that vance is perfectly signed onto the idea that if Trump And Vance lose the election 32 days from now, were going to see not only a replay of what happened in 2020, 2021, but something much more grave and could lead to autocracy. And michael, lastly, The New York Times had some terrific reporting this week about trumps threats to prosecute, to jail his political opponents, suggesting the doj did work on his behalf to limited success in his first term, but now hed be able to stock his administration with loyalists who would carry it out power has only grown. How worried are you, that were he to win, hed take this to a very unamerican place . Extremely worried. This is someThing Weve never seen before in american history. Major Party Nominees saying, elect me, and ill use the doj, the defense department, against my domestic enemies, jail people. Talk about the importance of Liz Cheneys public support of harris. Shes out there, campaigning with her, setting up, potentially, a Permission Structure for other republicans to cross the aisle and do the same. Yeah, look, it was powerful moment, jonathan. I was watching it on the laptop, getting kind of emotional. It wasnt that Dick Cheney got applause. Mike pence got applause. There are some snarky people out there, particularly on the left, oh, the democrats are now all in with the neocons or whatever. Thats not what was happening in wisconsin yesterday. It was democrats who appreciate the country, as Kamala Harris said there, who have love of country, who were cheering for people that were willing to put country over their political ideals. It was not democrats saying, no, were on board with the dick, Liz Cheney, and Mike Pence program on abortion and foreign policy. It was them saying, thank you. We appreciate you. We can also, you know, put partisan differences aside for a little bit to welcome you into this Process And Hope that we can save the country together. I think thats what yesterday was about. I think that the group that this is the most meaningful for is not swing voters in the traditional sense that theyre, like, deciding between trump and harris. It is traditional republicans who do not like trump, who are not planning to vote for trump, but who might not vote at all, who might Write In a name at the top of the ballot. I think having Liz Cheney there with Kamala Harris, saying, you know, a writein is not enough, this one time, it is worth it to proactively support the alternative candidate because the threat is so great, i think that is the important nudge that Liz Cheney is offering. Shes kind of alone in doing it. There are other, less, smaller name republicans. Its striking that shes the one out there doing it. Well see if that changes the next month. Trump himself, by The Way, also said democrats were trying to rally with the neocons, to your point. Speaking of trump, he heads back to butler county, pennsylvania, this weekend, in what is a muchhyped rally. The very site of the Assassination Attempt over the summer. Elon musk says hell be there, too. What do you think that will be like . Sounds like a circus if elon is going to be there. But, look, i mean, i think that Donald Trump obviously, you know, was boosted by this horrific event politically, and, you know, theres no room for this kind of violence. I think the one positive Thing Weve seen, maybe the only positive thing out of the Trump Campaign over the last two months is, i was kind of expecting a more, you know theres the old waving of the bloody shirt image. I was expecting a little more of that, like a little bit more of ramping up the kind of retribution calls. We havent seen that. I hope we do not see it at that rally in butler. But theres No Doubt it will be a spectacle. Tim, certainly, another base play. In our last minute or so here, talk to us about that. There are some undecideds, as you mentioned, but arent too many. This feels like which candidate can get their base the most excited to vote, to get out there and do it. A month out, what do you think . Look, i think the antitrump coalition is bigger than the protrump coalition. Weve seen it every time. I think Kamala Harris has done a really good job of bringing core democratic constituencies back on board. But shes not all The Way there yet. I think that shes got two things shes got to do over the next month. One is for people who still need to buy into the fact shes up for it, continue to make that sale, a proactive sale, but also what we say of Liz Cheney, motivate people no matter how extreme Donald Trump is.
