Sullivan does provide some critical protections for freedom of the press, but it doesn’t prevent successful SLAPPs, or strategic litigation against public participation -- libel suits intended to chill news coverage Anti-SLAPP legislation can help forestall vindictive lawsuits against journalists who tell the truth.
