Panelists recommend oversight committee for Florida prison system
A Zoom discussion on prison reform in Florida concluded with panel members agreeing there needs to an oversight committee to shine a light on a broken system.
The panel met for 90 minutes Thursday night and discussed on a variety of topics. The event was hosted by FAMM, an organization aimed at protecting those in prison and their families; and Florida Cares, a nonprofit group. The event was moderated by Deborrah Brodsky, former director of the Project on Accountable Justice at Florida State University.
Michele Deitch, a professor at the University of Texas-Austin, was introduced as an expert in understanding the prison system. She told fellow panelists that having an oversight body provides checks and balances and transparency.
