DeSantis signed an order Friday authorization vaccinations for Floridians younger than 65 deemed “extremely vulnerable” to COVID-19 because of medical conditions.
As of Monday afternoon, 71,459 vaccinations had been given in Polk County, according to Department of Health records. Of that total, 35,828 had received only a first dose and 35,631 had received a full series.
The two vaccines now available in Florida and manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna both require two injections for full effectiveness.
Polk ranks 14th among Florida’s 67 counties for total vaccinations. The county is ninth in population.
Department of Health figures show that 57.5% of the vaccinations have gone to women, reflecting the fact that women tend to live longer. Meanwhile, 78.2% of doses were given to people age 65 or older.
