Deconstructing the Myth of a Monolithic “Latinx Community”

"We have a tendency to take ethnic minorities and look at them as monolithic groups," says Valerie Endress, professor of communications and civic engagement at Rhode Island College. The "Latinx community" is a perfect example of this. While it is often spoken of in this country as a single identity applying to nearly all Spanish-speaking people in the Western Hemisphere, it's actually a richly diverse swath of the population, encompassing different races and ethnic identities from dozens of countries.
