Barr the former republican congressman from georgia who also served as a former u. S. Attorney is in atlanta your state has more than 23000 confirmed cases 19 and more than 9 and 900 deaths should you have reopened. Absolutely larry you know i think a lot of these governments including sometimes the federal government dont give people the credit that they deserve most people in this country are rational both rational and are responsible here in georgia for example there are thousands upon thousands of Small Businesses that either have already had to close their doors permanent late or have really come to the point where if they cant reopen they cannot reopen so the restrictions that we had in place in georgia that governor brian cam loosened last week are measured theyre very carefully crafted and i think they are they are very very appropriate as a matter of fact 2 hours ago i got a haircut in my local hair salon that i go to an adoring own you in doing that risking your own health and the barber in a winning risking his health i dont think any more than doing anything else in our society larry i wore a face mask the hairstylist wore a face mask they practiced social distancing they were not either anybody else within 6 feet actually more than 6 feet so the restrictions that are required of businesses that do open i think are more than sufficient to reasonably protect both the public and the Business Owners themselves who supplies the President Trump disagreeing with the yoga of. Its hard to be surprised that anything the President Trump says or does because he changes his mind so often i do think overall hes done a very good job on the regulatory front of dealing with this this medical problem but apparently he. Sort of gave the green light so to speak for states to do what georgia did and then yet when georgias governor decided to do what the president seemed to be urging the states to do he got beat up by the president so you know thats unfortunate but. Something that seems to happen where some regularity nowadays was the future of schools in u. S. States schools across the state of georgia larry are basically closed for the year we dont yet know whether they will reopen on a on a strict semester basis or earlier or later in the summer or early fall but for the current Academic YearPublic Schools am private schools in georgia are finished for the year prison term by monday openly questioning allied poorly run states which he claims are all democrat run a sinking aid from the federal governments money do you do you agree with that. Well i do think that best states need to assume a lot more responsibility for of the issues that now face them than they then a lot of them have been you know its a lot of these issues larry i think are supposed to be an traditionally have been handled by the states with support from the federal government nowadays if sames to be that the that default position up by the states is to turn to the federal government for everything criticize it if you dont get enough and only then and only then should the states be involved so i agree with the president the states need to assume more responsibility here than many of them have but new york puts more into the federal government than most a lot of states combined. Well they had other here in georgia for example i recall when i was in the house of representatives a number of years ago i would hear from officials in georgia that georgia was contributing more to the transportation road tax then we were getting back. You know we live in a in a federal system and if every state were to get back exactly the same amount that its citizens pay in federal taxes of various sorts then why have those taxes in the 1st place you know it is in new york they probably get more in some areas in other states and perhaps less in some other areas but i think overall d it pretty much evens out larry concluded the election of the georgia stacy abrams a widely touted as a possible wise cause of who picked for joe biden to have a hell of a race for governor already a mega her. Well she she was in the state legislature here for a few years and by all accounts did a good job shes a lot more liberal certainly than my a political persuasions but since since running out 2 years ago for governor and losing to brian kemp she really has done nothing no substance other than complain about not having won the election in 2016 and raising a lot of money for it not having won the election but claiming that she really should have won so i dont really think that shes done anything recently that would. Certainly lead me and a lot of people to believe that she has done anything and qualify her to serve as Vice President who think theres a chance we can be without an election. No i dont i have heard as you have various people suggesting that the election the federal election might be postponed or whatnot congress would have to do that and the problem is larry as you know as well as i do that the terms of the president and the Vice President and all members of the house of representatives as well as of 2 thirds of the senate expire in january thats constitutional so there has to be an election otherwise were going to be without a president or a Vice President come january 20th at noon and come early january would be without anybody in the house of representatives and only 2 thirds of the senators in office bob as always great talking with the i thank you so much my pleasure mary. He describes himself as a former lifelong lefty who now contends the left has really come regressive not progresses is de ruben creator and host of the room report on you tube author of the new book and here you see it dont burn this book thinking for yourself in an age of unreason what brought about this book and the title david. Yeah well 1st off larry its great to see. Im sad that we cant do this in person for now but hopefully hopefully soon enough well be able to grab lunch but you know a bit about my political evolution i mean i always considered myself sort of an old school liberal which i think is pretty much in line with what you are what a lot of sort of j. F. K. Liberals i know youre a youre a brooklyn guy sort of a ed kotch the former mayor of new york city liberal Daniel Patrick moynihan liberal liberal meaning open minded you know find the right spots for government but not the government is supposed to do everything all the time and unfortunately in the last 5 years weve seen a movement by the progressives this is sort of the bernie sanders. Contingent to really only come up with answers that have to do with more government involvement and for me i believe that the best way for people to live free especially in a country like the United States where you know weve got about 350000000 people from every corner in the in every corner of the world the best way for people to live free is is very limited government i want people to live how they want my neighbors entitled to do whatever he wants he cant do it on my property if i dont want him to but thats about it and in the book i talk about how liberals have sort of become sort of hysterical when it comes to free speech and the platforming people and i want i want liberals to return to the roots of liberalism. But you dont go as far as say the far right which is wacko right now. I assure you my friend i am not far right thank you for asking no do so and ironically you know there is yeah you know theres really actually a connection between the far left in the far right because the far left in the far right they both are identity tarion groups on the far right we think of the k. K. K. And white supremacist and Something Like that and on the far left theyre collectivists meaning they like to judge you based on the color of your skin nor your immutable characteristics or your sexuality meaning if youre gay you should think a certain thing or if youre black you should think a certain thing so those fringes actually d are are just that their fringes but unfortunately theyre pretty loud and i think within a within an american context right now the far left fringe has sort of really taken over the Media Establishment but i assure you i am not far right in any way i do find actually i do find actually that right now conservatives and im talking of just general conservatives do seem to be a little more open minded then than the lefties right now which is a flip on things because it wasnt always that way what changed you. You know there were a few moments that changed me and i go through a few of them in the book but ill tell you one very specifically i was on the Young Turks Network and i know youve done some stuff with them we did my show there a long time ago and they were playing a clip of fox news and theres a guy by the name of david webb who you may know hes a conservative commenter fox news and and he happens to be black so hes a black conservative and i just say he happens to be black because thats just part of who he is we were watching a clip of him and my cohosts were all saying what a sellout he is what an uncle tom he is all of the worst things you could say about Somebody Just because he was a conservative that was black and suddenly it hit me because they didnt know that prior to working at the young turks i had a show on sirius x. M. Radio and i became good friends with david webb and i was a lefty and he was on the right and we used to do shows together and then wed go out to dinner and have a couple whiskeys and then we would just let it go so i knew that this was a man who believed what he was saying but what i saw coming from the left was here was a black man who didnt believe what they felt a black man should believe and they felt that then gave them the right to call him all the worst things in the world and thats what i mean when i say that the far left or the progressives now have become collectivist they want they want black people to think a very specific set of things but thats not the type of things that say larry elder or thomas soul or others would think and they do this with a lot of identity groups and you know its counter to being human in many ways larry because you dont represent all people born in brooklyn or all white people are all talk show hosts you represent larry king and i think that thats how most people want to want to think about themselves the book is dont burn this book the guest is dave reuben thinking for yourself in an age of on reason well be right back. Far. Better of long russian airlines. The Economic System known as capitalism has generated more wealth than any other system in history in many ways it is defined maternity itself hundreds of millions have been lifted out of poverty however capitalism has also witnessed growing income inequality plus the appeal of socialism currently on the rise in calculus and. Welcome back to politicking im talking with dave ruben creator and host of the rubin report and author of the new book dont burn this book thinking fear shelves in an age of unreason he joins us from california. How are you handling it coronavirus and is theres no left right issue here or is there well i would say there is a secondary left right issue here but the 1st part that were all trapped in our houses i said here right before we went on air i was a little ahead of the game because as you know im in my house right now and my garage youve been here my garage is my studio so as i watch you know c. N. N. Anchors suddenly broadcasting out of their kitchens im feeling pretty good about things look i think that the secondary part the left right issue related to corona is coming in the next week or 2 because as it seems that this wasnt as bad as the predictions and that not as many people got sick this is all great and perhaps its because of social distancing perhaps its because weve done some of the right things so thats really wonderful it doesnt mean that the virus wasnt scary it doesnt mean that its still not affecting especially older people but now we have to get to the point where we decide to reopen the country and you know you and i are here in california where we have a progressive mayor in l. A. In a progressive governor in sacramento. And i would say california and new york have very different problems then say wyoming or texas i just heard a few minutes before we went on air that texas is now going to reopen on april 30th thats great and that really it has a lot to do with what i write about in the book because we forget that were supposed to be governed by 6 rights the governors should figure out whats best for their people because texas and montana and say colorado have different problems than say you know states that are in new york metropolitan area where they have a density of population the other side is if you open texas up and you open the wyoming up youre inviting more disease in i mean thats obvious if ever so and i think that that would be in texas gathers tomorrow and goes to the parks and goes out and play some ball in the stadiums youre going to have more cold virus in texas why come down on that side when youve got a Health Problem thats pandemic. Yeah so its a great question and i think what the uncomfortable part of what we really have to figure out here is that there is going to be a certain cost that comes with reopening the country but we cant not reopen the country you know weve all basically been in our houses from most 2 months now its almost hard to remember what the world used to be like before 2 months ago and i think my hope would be that when when abbott now opens texas on april 30th that he will tell people you know try to be responsible wear masks when you can or socially distance when you can and maybe theyre going to limit the amount of people that can be in restaurants and things like that but the alternative is just waiting forever and you know we have now have over 20000000 people that are unemployed the economy is tanking im also worried about the the secondary effects of what it. Keep people sort of trapped in their home at all times so we have to balance it youre not wrong in what youre saying that is it possible if texas opens up and now people are together again and that more people are going to get sick you might be right but we have to decide what level of sickness are we willing to live with so to speak to move ahead and open the country because i dont know how much longer we can do this. And that sounds ridiculous what level of risk can we live with come on youve got to go there only have to figure out what it was or. What whose risk yours or mine is so gave you die right. No no well look heres what heres what wed have to do it would be on everybody to figure out what their tolerable risk is so if you were in a High Risk Group then you would want to do more to actually still not have these people out but can we just the thing is that theres no 0 risk here right i mean look if we could say to everybody were not going to open the country until we have a nationwide vaccine for this thing which could not come perhaps refer to years i mean we cant stay in our houses for 2 years so i just want to be clear im not for just reopening everything tomorrow and pretending that everythings great but i think unfortunately we have to give the governors the maximum amount of flexibility to do it and you hope that youve voted in some of the right people now maybe we havent voted in the right people but thats thats also on us. As a liberal form a liberal say on the edges a kennedy liberal you would humphrey liberal or you. What do i think of donald trump when we weve discussed this a couple of times i would say that the policies of donald trump i dont think are somehow far writers zina phobic or Something Like that most most of the things that donald trump has actually done are pretty much things that Ronald Reagan did in many cases what when he says things about immigration. You know hes saying the same things that bill clinton said and even barack obama he says them in a slightly more butchered or strange way and the intonation and inflection of the way speaks i think look trumps trumps greatest gift is that hes decided that he wont you know sit back and let the media run all over him and i think our media unfortunately and this is a little bit of the rise of the online commentator instead of just the cable new set of people i think that did need to happen. You know ive met him i know youve met him many times and you know been out in the many that you know day i met him with my husband back in december at mar a lago and he was thrilled that we were there and he had no problem with gay people that doesnt mean hes perfect i certainly dont think hes perfect but in a weird way i almost think he is he was sort of the reckoning that our political establishment needed all that being said look if you could reincarnate Thomas Jefferson if we could bring back j. F. K. If we could be bring back people that i think were true statesmen and that really understood separation of powers and that really understood why this country is so great i think that would probably be better but you know here we are. In your book you describe the Mainstream Media as deeply corrupt how could. That. You think. You think the head of columbia broadcasting system is deeply corrupt. What i think is that weve watched a media that largely is in bed with the democrats decide what stories they cover and what stories they dont cover so even right now as were taping this theres an interesting story developing that has actually has something to do with you so we know about these allegations from tara reader who is a former joe biden staffer from you know 25 plus years ago and theres a clip on c. N. N. From larry king tonight where her it what turns out to be her mother called in over 25 years ago called into your show asking what she should do because her book her daughter was sexually assaulted by a by a senator she doesnt say who but now to our readers confirm that that was in fact her mother well that clip is now on fire on you tube on twitter i mean there are millions of people watching this but the Mainstream Media is ignoring it now im not saying its true what her allegations are but what one of the things thats happening right now is that the online media twitter you tube facebook there is a way for people to communicate about whats actually happening and right now c. N. N. Is just completely ignoring that story and as a matter of fact it turns out that that episode of your show is one of like 3 episodes that somehow is missing from the Google Play Store im not even calling this all a conspiracy but theres a theres an odd thing where if if something here the best example i can give you is this when when Brett Kavanaugh was being you know when his nomination process was happening for the Supreme Court the there were allegations that he had sexually assaulted at least one woman but probably more the media ran with it for weeks the cover of every single story i was in tour on tour in europe at the time and people were asking me on the streets what i thought about it well right now we have allegations against joe biden again im not saying theyre true or false but the media has gone out of their way to hide it so what i would say in essence is. If youre on the right the media loves to run with stories against you and if youre on the left they love to ignore them and i think ignoring things is is a type of fake news i actually lay out for types of fake news in this book and i think ignoring stories because of a political bias is actually a type of fake news but to directly at your question i dont think everyone in Mainstream Media is corrupt and evil of course not but i think by and large there is there are too many journalists that im using air quotes who are really activists and you know they use Anonymous Sources and who are often just their friend or their dog and we need we need old school journalist i want your know where is Walter Cronkite i mean i want real journalists and the i knew you could see the fox news journalism. Do i consider fox news journalism fox news is the outlier i would say on. The entire thing so if everything sort of leans left meaning and this n. B. C. Leans left c. N. N. Leans left most of the Network Cable news leans left a network may network news leans left i would say fox is the outlier so i dont think theyre necessarily any more truthful in the other way but theyre just saying we lean right there just the one outlier on the other side ok but i mean i go on fox news all the time you know and they let me say whatever i want im on live and i often disagree with the hosts and its not a problem in the limited time we have left how do you see the election going. This is going to be a weird one i mean i think right now theres a theres a huge problem related to biden which is very unfortunate you know theres or i think there are serious questions about his cognitive abilities and thats a problem i mean theres no doubt that thats a problem i think that this this new Sexual Assault allegation is also a problem i also think that you know when you compound coronavirus and that the states all wont exactly be open at the exact same time and what happens if we get a sort of 2nd rebound in november and how are we going to actually go ahead and do the election and what their whats the Democratic Convention going to be like but my my general feeling is if its biden as the nominee you know if youre a democrat you have to understand youre probably not voting for joe biden youre probably voting for the v. P. In effect i dont think he will be a 4 year president i mean i just dont see that happening so i think everythings up in the air i sense that short of an absolute economic collapse which actually could happen i hope it doesnt i sense trump probably get real i think it was soon out as you are out of your sanctuary and im out of mine whenever they allow or so out we will meet on a Street Corner somewhere and go have lunch. Sounds like a friend its good to see as always larry we thank dave ruben 1st time today and again the no book is dont work in this book thinking for yourself in an age of only reason its out now and available everywhere including to download thank you for joining me on this edition of politicking you can join the conversation on my Facebook Page or tweet me at kings things and dont forget use the politicking hash tag and thats all for this edition of politicking.
