San Antonio firefighters responded to three times more calls than usual on Monday as winter weather seized the city.
There were 2,608 calls over the 24-hour period, according to SAFD spokesperson Joe Arrington, and the emergencies showed no signs of slowing Tuesday as temperatures remained below freezing. More than 250 of the calls were for broken water lines.
"We're doing a great job so far but it's taxing. Our crews are extremely exhausted," Arrington said. "They're making three times the number of calls they usually make and we're a very busy department to begin with."
