Rose spent a lifetime to fight for this central subway, that everybody remembers the central subway is not falling from the sky. Somebody that see to fight for it. So now that the central subway is almost done, we should honor her hard work, persistent, and continue to make this mission come true. Im here to support the naming of the chinatown rose pak station. Clerk thank you. Next speaker, please. Hi, everyone. So im here to speak for my mother. Clerk what is your name . My name is adele. My mother is over 80 years old. Chinatown is her memory. She came with my dad. So when my dad was alive, he brought my mom to chinatown every month. Even she does everything in cantonese. So one story what happened. One day she went to the restaurant [ indiscernible ] and she had a free lunch and she even smoked in the restaurant with family who had kids. My mother is shocked. Shes very allergic to cigarettes. She spoke with the owner. This is a true story happening in my family. So people said how nice she is, shes a bully. Think about it. Thank you. Clerk thank you. Next speaker, please. Hold on one second. Hi, my name is oh, i guess you already heard me. My name is dixon. I am a resident in San Francisco and im also a Community Organizer in chinatown for many years and i had an honor to witness ms. Pak and her legacy and the work she put in the community she loves so much before she passed away. Im here to express my strong support for the rose pak station. She was assertive, smart, tenacious. She had the guts to stand up for the chinatown communities when there was a lack when few other people chose to be so community minded. There is not a Single Person who did more to advocate for the Community Interest in the building of a central subway than ms. Pak herself. She is part of clerk thank you, your time is up. Next person, please. Good evening, broader of directors. I support chinatown rose pak station. I have been working in San Francisco for 30 years. I experienced the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco. In her lifetime, rose pak has done so much to make sure that the central subway comes to chinatown which makes people have a better life. She was respected by many because her actions were always used to support the community. I hope everyone supports the naming of chinatown rose pak station in memory of her contribution. Clerk thank you. Next speaker, please. Good evening, board of directors. Im a resident of the sunset district. I have been living and working in San Francisco for more than 20 years. Im here today to support chinatown rose pak station. Ive been knowing rose pak for more than 20 years. When she was a fighter, she was not just a fighter, actually, she was a fearless fighter. So all of the issues and all the projects she advocated for the community over the years, they were all full of obstacles, but she never backed off because she had a vision for the community and she fought for that vision. I want to say without rose pak there would be no chinatown station because there would be no central subway or any kinds of subway coming into chinatown. So i would like to urge you to support chinatown rose pak station. Thank you, your time is done. Next speaker, please. My name is steven lee and i am a member of the merchants one of the merchants of chinatown. I believe in compromise. I think the chinatown rose pak station is okay because we should be together as a community, not separate. We have other things to worry about. Tourism is down 35 all over the city. In chinatown were getting car breakins. You have empty garages that we should be dealing with. Why are we here debating about the name of a station . I hope all these people behind me support whatever they support. I respect them, but they should respect what we want and at the same time we should come together and help improve chinatown and not be divided. Okay. We have a lot more work to do, and i would like to see after the vote today how much more the people whether for or against is going to help chinatown. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. [speaking chinese]. My name is kay. Im a little bit nervous to speak in public. I think many people like we wanted to speak out their opinion, but they are not there. I think everyone deserves a simple and peaceful life and because of this issue it breaks our peaceful life. So i just want to say i do not support rose pak station naming. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. [speaking chinese] my name is wang ping. I noticed that every bart station used a location as the nami naming, but why do we use someones name to name a station . Talk about feng shuai, Chinese People dont believe its good luck. [speaking chinese] chinatown is a landmark. Everyone wants to for those what want to go to chinatown, we know the name by location. There are over 400 merchants supporting chinatown station. So why are we against those opinions . Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. I am here to support naming the station. I am against rose pak. Thank you, next speaker. [speaking chinese] im here to support chinatown only. Many people dont like rose pak. She is controversial. Shes famous for bullying in the community. I dont understand why we use her name. [speaking chinese] the United States supports freedom so i dont like using the rose pak name. Thank you. Next speaker, please. I have been living in San Francisco for 14 years. I like to shop in chinatown. Chinatown is very familiar to many people so people know what it means, but rose pak is not familiar to others. Its going to destroy the chinatown landmark. Its also blocking the Economic Development in chinatown. So i have agreed to name chinatown station only chinatown station. Im strongly against adding rose paks name. Thanks. [speaking chinese] i am only for naming Central Station after the landmark. Everyone knows that when there is Chinese People, there is chinatown. So chinatown makes most sense for people to remember. Im strongly against using rose paks name. Thank you. [speaking chinese] as all of us have already experienced, using rose paks name has been very controversial already. So if we want to make a peaceful community, lets stop this by using only chinatown station. Dont use a controversial name to name a Central Station, otherwise me and my friend will not stop fighting for this. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Greetings board members. Im here to give my opinions against what is your name . My name is irene gau. Im here to give my opinions against using rose paks name on the station. If this happens, it should be many chinese shame on it. What kind of woman she is. Rose pak pretended to be poor and [ indiscernible ] a lowpriced home in San Francisco, and at the same time she owned a price elsewhere. So what is good and what is bad. Everyone [ indiscernible ] at least to be honest is very important here in america. I dont like this kind of woman and i dont think this name is worth this honor. So only the name of the chinatown station, chinatown station. Thank you very much. Next speaker, please. [speaking chinese] i only support chinatown station. We shouldnt use a persons name with no [ indiscernible ] so im strongly against rose pak. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. [speaking chinese] i dont like this controversial issue. I only support naming chinatown station only. Thank you. Next speaker, please. [speaking chinese] my name is annie. This is the second time im here to express my concern. Im a survivor of the persecution of chinese regime. [speaking chinese] so ive been experiencing a lot of pain when i was in china. So im really thankful to have this freedom to speak of my own will. So i strongly support chinatown station only. Thank you very much. Unfortunately your time is done. Next speaker, please. Good evening, commissioners. My name is calvin louis. I spent my entire life in San Francisco chinatown. I was born there. I went to school there, worked there, lived there, and i have many businesses in the heart of chinatown. I first met rose pak over 30 years ago, and up to five years ago she was still cussing me out and cursing me, but ive forgiven her for that because i know her heart is with chinatown. I know she fought for the against tearing down the embarcadero freeway. Of course she raised a lot of money for chinese hospital, the same hospital that i was born in. As i look around the room, i see a lot of people that have many similarities with me. The only difference is its very minor im sorry, but your time is up. Thank you, next speaker, please. Good evening, board. My name is larry yee. I grew up in San Francisco. Do not hold onto the microphone. Okay. I do not want it to fall below the time limit. I grew up in chinatown and i met rose back in 1973 in San Francisco. She was a teacher there. At that time in november she said, i have to leave San Francisco state. I said, where are you going . She said, im going to chinatown because they cant run a parade there. So she invested 45 years of her life making sure that that parade is there for our community. On top of that, she helped raise and build that chinese hospital. I mean, theres a lot of people that did put in their funding there, but she made sure it stayed on track. I say to you guys there, there are a lot of people talking about this, but it should be named the chinatown rose pak. Thank you very much. Next speaker, please. Hi, my name is yandi, and i am a resident from the bayview district. I am here to support the naming of chinatown rose pak station. She demonstrated her leadership to bring the community together, when a woman was defending social justice. When a woman dedicated her entire life to improving the life of not just chineseamericans, but the life of all san franciscans who are struggling to provide for their families, but she was told, rose, youre too aggressive. When it comes to the times of honoring female leaders in our community, we always experience push back. It is time to end this pattern. It is time to celebrate the life of a woman who was never afraid to advocate for the community. This moment of roses passion and fighting for social justice, appreciating a woman who bettered our lives and our community. Thank you. Next speaker, please. I am lisa chan and i am here to make a statement. I grew up in chinatown and i served many adult students who live in this community. I support naming the subway station after rose pak. Our communities are stronger because of leaders like her. Rose pak stood up for the Chinatown Community, for elders, workers, immigrants, and so many more. This is not just about rose paks legacy. Its about recognizing a woman of color who led the fight and kept making noise until the powers have heard the voices of the people and took action. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Good evening, directors. I want to thank you guys for coming here and spending all this time on this issue. I am one of your c. A. C. Members. Im also a transit justice organizer with chinatown trip and i serve on the recently formed sf transit restructuring working group. Im an sf native who depends on affordable transit my whole life. This is why i decided to dedicate my life to ensure that my community in chinatown has sorry. So one of the commissioners decided to compare rose to Justin Herman plaza and said we should not name it after people. I guess forprofit corporations like chase bank is okay. We love the warriors but j. P. Morgan has brought havoc. Why do corporations get a pass thank you. Thank you. Evening, directors. Thank you for your time today. My name is rosa, and i am a lifelong resident of chinatown. I work there and my family owns a business there. For those speakers who said they came to chinatown three times a month, i am there every single day of my life, i sleep, work, live there, practically there 24 7. Naming this station is giving respect to our Community Advocates that hardly get recognized in anything that theyve done for the city and the community. There are so few opportunities for Public Institution to be named after the sheroes of our time especially for women of color. This is more than just about a name. Rose reminds us to be relentless in our service to the community, particularly women to be bold, courageous and undeterred in our pursuit for a more just society. Thank you for your time. Thank you. Next speaker, please. My name is cindy and i am a part of the rose pak support club. As a daily transit rider commuting from chinatown, i know i am benefitting from the advocacy work rose has worked on. Soon i will take the central subway that will make my commute even more efficient. Rose would never brag about all she has done. She is the type of advocate we need to learn about in school and to honor the communities she dedicated her life to. She has so much history in helping our community become one of the most robust communities. This will also be monument for sf m. Ta. As this would be the first Transportation System to be named after an asian woman who pushed and carried the central subway thank you. [ please stand by ] it was an incredible thing to witness and her passing of the huge scar for those fighting to make chinatown better. She earned the honor of having the new subway station bear her name and i urge you to listen to the voices of the people who truly knew rose. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Hello. I am a member with the rose pak club. Thank you for your time. As an immigrant from hong kong, it was very difficult for me to come to a country where i didnt know the language. Rose pak has set said people are immigrant communities can achieve. It hurts me to see people who are also immigrants, to attack such a great role model. And having a station named after rose pak would tell our next generation what they can do, what they are able to achieve. I urge you, please support naming the station after rose pak. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Good evening. I have lived on districts street for five years before when the central subway was getting built i was really excited. Im looking forward looking for to having it built. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Hello, directors. My family has been in the city for about four years. She is a true advocate for the community of chinatown, especially San Francisco. Early on in 2007, before the train opened, there used to be a bus lane to take us straight to chinatown. I will probably get some thumbs after this. I grew up in San Francisco and remember the first phase of the tea line being completed. Today i am a chinatown youth leader and aspired for her inspired by her and to advocate for pedestrian safety. I would like to get off at the chinatown rose pak station. For many people who look like me , she is a symbol and ensures that people like me are seen, recognized, and valued. Thank you. Good evening. I have lived in San Francisco for 30 years and worked in the Chinatown Community for 28 years today i passed through the robert leavy tunnel three times and i passed Jean Parker School three times. I doubt that either of those fine people did as much to create a tunnel or the school as rose pak did to create the chinatown station. I strongly support the naming of chinatown rose pak station. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Good evening. I am with the chamber of the Chinese Chamber of commerce. I am here to vote for trying to persuade you guys to name the station as chinatown rose pak station. Please use your judgement and your knowledge to vote. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Good evening. My name is kent. I am here to speak on behalf of my father. I learned about rose pak from my father 25 years ago, and one day we were set at the dinner table, and it was on a tuesday, he normally goes to chinatown to do shopping and have dinner with the family. He says, you know, this lady, her name is rose pak, she is incredible because she is helping us to preserve our tradition, to have the whole chicken so we can use in this ceremony here expressly for Chinese New Year. I have not heard my father prays anybody like that in my life. So being that said, today i ask you, on his behalf, to name chinatown rose pak station. It is the right thing to do. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. She not only fought for the health and wellbeing of chinatown as you heard a lot about tonight, she also fought for its vibrancy. She recognized that the construction of the central subway would be a key component to unlocking this vibrancy. She knew its construction would be more than just another munimobile line, it would be a lifeline for chinatown, a lifeline for commerce, cultural exchange, and connections for years to come. Voting today in favor of the name chinatown rose pak station is a way for San Francisco to both symbolically and specifically continue her work towards making chinatown truly thrive. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. My name is donald. I grew up in chinatown and i have a professional Office Inside chinatown. Im also on im also a board of director of the San FranciscoChinese Chamber of commerce. Im here in support of the resolution of naming the central subway station to chinatown rose pak station. Rose dedicated her life to the community. She fought so hard to keep chinatown what it is today, affordable housing, affordable businesses, and fighting to keep healthcare within chinatown chinese hospital. She thought for this station. Theres no doubt about it. That is a fact. I encourage you to look at her contribution to the community and her dedication, her life dedication to china to chinatown. Thank you. Good evening m. T. A. Board members. My name is cornelia and i am a teacher and i have been living in district three since eight years. I was here on june 4th when three of you had the courage to follow their conscience and m. T. A. Policy. He didnt follow peskins suggestion to name public property after a highly controversial figure. Thank you. To the supporters that we just heard, i want to say, rose pak deceived many. How can you be sure that she didnt deceive you . After all that we heard today, i hope that all the seven of you can follow your conscience and sfmta policy. Chinatown station only. Thank you. Thank you. And the. Next speaker, please. [speaking foreign language] thank you. Thank you. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator fully supports naming Central Station as chinatown only. I just want a nondivided chinese community, so the factors that influence this dividend is the communist party. I want to make sure that everyone understands that. Thank you. [speaking foreign language] i am a resident from district nine of San Francisco. I think only chinatown can represent our chinese community. Im against using rose paks name to name Central Station. She is very controversial. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator i will translate for her. I almost go to chinatown oh, every week. All the commercial and residents in chinatown, many people are against naming the chinatown subway station. [indiscernible] rose pak is a controversial person. Naming after her is meaningless. It also causes divide in the community. Im strongly against naming this after rose pak. Otherwise i will feel bad when i go to chinatown in the future. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Good evening, everyone. I am here to oppose naming the chinatown subway station after rose pak. Naming after her is very divisive. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Good evening, everyone. I am here to urge you not to name the station after rose pak. She is such a controversial person. Some people like her, and maybe her friends saw her in her best days, but for other people, they saw her differences. They dont want to say her name. [indiscernible] we dont want to be reminded of her every time we take the subway. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator i have lived in San Francisco for over 20 years. I strongly support naming the station as chinatown subway station, also, i am strongly against naming it after rose pak because this person is really bad. Please support naming chinatown station only. Thank you very much. Thank you. Next speaker, please. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator good evening, directors. My name is lila. I want to share two stories while i volunteered to connect collect signatures against rose pak naming, and the first story is while i was connecting collecting signatures, a caucasian elderly came to me. She says she is not a fan of rose pak. She actually lives in an apartment that more than 80 of people are chinese residents, and most of them speak she says rose pack rose pak was not a good person. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator thats why she says i came to say my name there. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator while we were doing the signature collection in front of a grocery store, we ran into a retired policeman. He and his wife both said that, especially him, he said he interacted with rose pak multiple times and he was initially against her. He and his wife both signed a signature to oppose naming rose pak. Thank you very much. Good afternoon, everyone. For the station name, i definitely want to say no rose pak. Chinatown only. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. [speaking foreign language] thank you. Time for the translation. Voice of translator good evening. My name is jessica. I am strongly against naming rose pak for the subway station. I interacted with her a few years ago. One was in 2007, it was around Chinese New Year time. A group past meat passed me and viciously stared at me. I had a chill through my body. Since then, i stopped going to chinatown. Then a few years ago i saw a report saying that her name was rose pak. I stopped going to chinatown. A few years ago i read reports that she passed away, so i began to come back to chinatown. I like chinatown, i like a lot of stuff in chinatown. So i wish that you dont name the subway station after rose pak. Thank you very much. Next speaker, please. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator good evening. I just want to say that here in america, but officials are publicly elected, and as Public Officials you should listen to the voice of the people and not you should respect peoples opinion. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator this issue came up three years ago about whether it should be called chinatown station or rose pak station. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator i remember the decision made was that the station should be named after the geography, the geographic location rather than an individual. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator i dont understand why this issue came up again and why we have an individual name. Chinatown has a history of 150 years. Adding this persons name to it will confuse people. [speaking foreign language] your time has expired. Thank you. Next speaker, please. [speaking foreign language] voice of translator good evening. I am a San Francisco resident. I am strongly against naming rose pak after the subway station. I want i went to collect signatures against rose pak. Many people actually sent us, and i came to know many who did mention. Many people were hurt by her. I think her name should not appear in any public property. Thank you very much. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Next speaker, please. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen and board members. My name is maxine and i came to the United States in 1966 and became a citizen in 1975. I knew that this country is based on the spirit of equality, freedom and all these good things, but i heard about the naming of chinatown after rose pak. I started to do some research myself and i find out i would like to be a volunteer for the petition to get signatures to go against naming rose pak. [please stand by]
