The good news is that Gov. Hochul stood her ground and got the Legislature to agree to further reform to pretrial detention laws that, since being hastily forced through in 2019, have been fixed and fixed again. The bad news is that even the thrice-amended bail law refuses to learn lessons from just across the Hudson, where New Jersey had the good sense to get rid of cash bail entirely and give judges a clearer standard related to the risk a defendant presents to the community.
