The whole world is on display on the outer walls of Philadelphia’s City Hall.
The ornate Beaux-Arts building, one of the largest municipal buildings in the country, is covered in 250 sculptures crafted by Alexander Milne Calder. They depict famous mythological figures, as well as animals and people symbolic of different parts of the globe. Its northern pavilion harkens back to Europe, while its eastern gives nods to Asia. Africa is paid homage to in the southern pavilion, while America is the subject of the western one.
