The people of Torres Strait will today celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the gospel of Jesus in their region [on July the 1st.]
The event will be marked by The Coming of the Light festival, which remembers the arrival of the gospel on the islands between Cape York and Papua New Guinea.
The Sydney Anglicans website says the festival recalls the arrival of the Reverend Samuel McFarlane in 1871, when he sailed to Erub or Darnley Island.
The elders of the clan of Erub accepted Reverend McFarlane and took him in as their guest, enabling him to share the Bible with them and spread the gospel in the Torres Strait.
