The Foreign Affairs minister and the defense minister there planning some of the key points, telling us theres a huge search area of 2. 2 million square miles. They are trying to narrow that search area by coordinating satellite data from a number of countries. They are not naming which countries are giving which information and saying repeatedly that politics is not important here and the search is what happens. What did you make of on that . Reporter geeta, i would say there werent many screaming headlines so to speak. We did get detail on what seems to be a complex multinational search for the missing airliner. We heard from the acting transport minister hussein who obviously talked about the fact that the area in which they are searching is no longer confined to southeast asia. The area they are looking at is more than 2. 2 million nautical square miles as far north as the caspian sea and the as far south as the indian ocean. They appealed for help really. They appealed for help from partners. The azian members which they are a part. Asking for deep sea equipment. Also they announced two ships would be traveling to the southern corridor for a total of nine ships and support choppers for that ever increasing search. Interestingly, he also addressed the controversy we have seen unfold over the last two days of when exactly two Communication Systems on the aircraft went off line. They emphasized they gave as accurate as possible information at the time. Of course their story changed at the weekend to monday. They reiterated once again that they believe what happened to the missing plane was a deliberate act. They didnt really elaborate much on the allegations of some in china that some relatives are threatening to go on Hunger Strike because they are so frustrated with the lack of information. Absolutely. And we have seen signs being taped up from the relatives and friends of people missing who are from mainland china. We have seen signs talking about going on Hunger Strike because they believe malaysia is giving out conflicting information. Certainly malaysia tried to defend itself just now, specifically when they were talking about exactly when the Communication Systems went off line. Basically they said essentially that it doesnt change anything. They still believe that the systems were turned off by someone very deliberately and that it doesnt change the nature of the investigation. Of course we still have no motive for what happened to the missing plane. No information or updates on the crew, the passengers, the pilots. They are all being investigated too. Reporter no, not much on that today. Interestingly, we heard some of that from china. We heard from the news agency quoting the ambassador to malaysia saying china had, in fact, run background searches on all those people on the plane and they found nothing remiss, no one suspicious. No one from the chinese side was responsible for the possible hijacking. Overall today, slightly frustrating because not very much new information. But a sense of the sheer size of this operation. Absolutely. And its an operation that has just changed so dramatically in only a few days. Initially you had so many ships from 10 countries yon wards search anything southeast asia, combing the coast of thailand, malaysia, vietnam looking for debris, looking for the plane because of what we now know based on satellite information theory is that the plane continued to travel for possibly another seven hours even after it lost contact with ground staff, with air traffic control. And it could be anywhere. An enormous area. Thats why authorities are appealing for so much help. Of course we heard today that they are in touch with their counterparts in the u. S. The u. S. Navy called off one of its warships. It deployed many more longrange aircraft being sent to the southern corridor to help with malaysias search in an area in which if there is any debris it is certainly very difficult to find now.
