The outbreak compares to previous viruses. Almost a hundred allies of the home secretary priti patel have written a letter defending her, after a series of bullying allegations. The duke and duchess of sussex have taken part in one of their last official engagements before they quit royal life later this month. And in sport englands women are beaten by the usa in their first match in the she believes cup in florida. Good morning and welcome to the bbc news at 9 the Health Secretary, matt hancock, says the government is working with supermarkets to ensure that people staying at home because of coronavirus can be supplied with food. He told the bbcs question Time Programme that he was confident supplies would not run down. But the bbcs Business Editor says that a supermarket executive told him they havent heard from the government directly and that staff are working round the clock to keep shelves stocked. The total number of confirmed cases in the uk has risen to 116. A woman in her 70s is the first person to die in the uk from covid 19 she was being treated at a hospital in reading. More than 140 british nationals are stranded on a cruise ship off San Francisco after some passengers developed flu like symptons. Jon donnison reports. Royal berkshire nhs trust say the woman who died was in her 70s. She had been in and out of hospital in reading for other Health Problems when she tested positive for coronavirus on wednesday. Obviously, our sympathies are very much with the victim and their family. But the situation is pretty much as it has been, in the sense that were still, sam, in the contain phase. Now, our scientists and medical advisers are making preparations for the delay phase. More details of the cases in the uk have now emerged. There are 45 people being treated in isolation at home. So far, 18 out of the overall total have fully recovered, but the source of infection in ten cases remain unexplained. Alder hey hospital in liverpool has confirmed a child there has covid 19. Its not known how old the patient is and doctors say children appear to be more resistant to the virus. Meanwhile, off the coast of california, 140 british people are among passengers stuck on a cruise ship which is having to have coronavirus testing kits airlifted in after two people travelling on a separate cruise on the ship last month tested positive. I dont see anybody Walking Around that appears sick. If they are, they must be in the medical area. Nobody is Walking Around sneezing or coughing. You know, people are im sure, a little anxious. But nobody has just sure, a little anxious. But nobody hasjust gone sure, a little anxious. But nobody has just gone screaming mad yet. Back home, speaking on question time last night, the Health Secretary, matt hancock, addressed concerns of panic buying causing shortages because of growing fears over the outbreak. The government has supplies of the key things that are needed, and within the food supply, we are absolutely confident that people will, that there wont be a problem there. And crucially, we are working with the supermarkets to make sure that if people are self isolating, then well be able to get the food and supplies that they need. And as hospitals come under increasing pressure as the number of cases continues to rise, Officials Say people with less severe symptoms will be asked to take care of themselves at home. Jon donnison, bbc news. Bbc breakfast spoke this morning to the governments chief scientific adviser, sir Patrick Vallance and was questioned on the governments aims if the uk moves from a containment to a delay phase. In general, you would expect an epidemic of this type and from what weve seen, to go up over about 12 weeks and go down over about 12 weeks. And about 95 of the cases would occur in the middle nine weeks and about 50 in the middle three weeks. So you get a very sharp peak. For the nhs, it would be better to dampen that down and make it a little bit broader and for the disease itself, it would be good to pushit disease itself, it would be good to push it if we can, a bit into the summer push it if we can, a bit into the summer months where weve got less other respiratory infections, the nhs is under less pressure, so thats the aim and the virus may actually be less transmissible in the summer, we dont know, but respiratory viruses often are then so respiratory viruses often are then so that is the aim of the delay phase. And sir patrick was asked about cases where the person getting the coronavirus cannot explain how they contracted it. It suggests person to person transmission in the uk. Thats the time that you start to then see transmission across the population are more likely and weve seen that in other countries so thats why those cases are particularly important, we dont know the origin, it suggests we will get more person to person transmission and thats certainly what we are preparing for. And we would then expect the epidemic to grow as the result of that. And in general, if you look at wuhan and other places, this looks as though the number of cases doubles over about a five day period. Its gone up about a five day period. Its gone up more quickly here because its a bit about finding the cases and thats what you see at the beginning but in general, the infection epidemic you would expect to increase in size every five days or so. Increase in size every five days or so. And this was sir patricks advice if you are pregnant and worried about coronavirus. In terms of pregnant women, we dont have any information on that but unlike the seeker virus where there is a very specific thing that occurs in pregnancy, theres nothing to suggest that coronaviruses in general is a family have any particular issues in pregnancy. And then, children seem actually to get either a very mild illness or no illness at all, so they got a very low chance of getting significantly ill and as low chance of getting significantly illand asi low chance of getting significantly ill and as i say, the ones most likely to get ill or the elderly, over the age of 65, 70 and particularly about the age of 80 and those with coexisting medical conditions. Lets hear now from someone caught up in the outbreak kari kolstoe, whos on board the grand princess cruise ship which is being denied permission to dock in San Francisco, after an outbreak of covid 19. Shes got bone cancer and says she needs urgent treatment. The treatment is very urgent. My cancer has progressed shortly before we left home and the surgeons i had patched me up a bit and sent me on this trip while they were waiting for insurance so its really imperative that i get there. And really were not being told a whole lot but i dont know whose fault that is because everybody is trying really ha rd. And then theyve told me that i can be put on a list so that if the cruise ship has to stay out to sea for longer, iwould be on a list that would be given to the cdc for possible approval to go home. You know, theres 1100 crew members who are also affected, who are effectively trying to feed and hand bottles of water out. Im trying to get, i have bone cancer, its spread to my bones, im trying to get a chair that i can sit on in my stateroom. Sojust, kind of trying for some rudimentary things at this point. Thats one of the passengers on board the grand princess cruise ship just off the coast of california. 0ur Health Correspondent Philippa Roxby is here as we get to the end of another working week for many people, people wondering what is going to happen next and how the situation will evolve. I think we are all pretty sure that the numbers are likely to go up . They are, cases of coronavirus are going to rise, Health Specialists and Officials Saying that absolutely guaranteed 110w. Saying that absolutely guaranteed now. Whats interesting is that weve sadly had our first death, that was expected, but what is slightly different now is that people with the virus are being treated at home rather than being sent to hospital so some people, around half the case is currently in the uk now are self isolating at home and thats something thats slightly new. There is obviously Community Transmission going on because ten cases currently we dont know where that virus has come from, they have no connection with travel abroad or with people who travelled abroad. And that something Health Officials are looking into, they need to try and find out why these are under the radar. If people are being treated at home what exactly does that mean . Are they being left to their own devices to take paracetamol and drink lots of fluids 01 paracetamol and drink lots of fluids or someone paracetamol and drink lots of fluids or someone calling them to ask them they are . It may well be that their symptoms are extremely mild. There is nothing really that they can do other than wait for the symptoms to recover. If youre serious at all, if you have a serious lung issues or a fever or breathing difficulties, there is no doubt you would be sent toa there is no doubt you would be sent to a specialist issues and you would be monitored, for those with very mild symptoms. Do we know if Health Professionals a re mild symptoms. Do we know if Health Professionals are checking in with people who have declared they think they have coronavirus, they are self isolating at home, essentially trying to look after themselves . Isolating at home, essentially trying to look after themselve57m someone trying to look after themselve57m someone talking to them . Yes, there is communication going on, they would have been tested, tested positive but having very little symptoms, Health Officials now feel there is no point in transporting them to a hospital and risking further transmission of the virus. It was interesting listening to the chief medical officer when he appeared before the Health Select committee yesterday in the house of commons saying the biggest single thing that would be of use to him in terms of planning would be to know how many people have this virus. And are asymptomatic. What are the chances the medical profession say, of lots of us Walking Around having this and not actually realising . Yes, that may be happening now, theres definitely evidence that theres definitely evidence that there is Community Transmission and that means under the radar people are passing it to each other and that was expected, that is very much how the virus operates. And we can see that happening in italy, we are a long way from where italy is now. The government saying they are very much prepared. The nhs is on stand by for much prepared. The nhs is on stand byforan much prepared. The nhs is on stand by for an epidemic. And are ramping up of cases. And they are very well prepared. We were talking a few minutes ago and you were saying its a little bit blurry as to where this containment dome a containment phase ends and the delay phase begins but do you think we are almost there . Given that the government wants to try to stop that pressure on the nhs building, to try and hold back the spread of the disease as much as it can . Yes, the idea of moving onto the delay phase which we think we are possibly in now although the government says they will let us know when that happens, is to try and push the peak of the epidemic back so that the nhs can be under less pressure. If we reach a peak in the summer months its a lot easier for the nhs to deal with it and a lot easier for nature to deal with the virus rather than also being cooped up inside which we are very much at the moment. And i think its worth reminding everyone, we have said it cou ntless reminding everyone, we have said it countless times this week, whether you think youve just got a cold or you think youve just got a cold or you think you might have something else, those hygiene rules that we should all be following. Yes, the emphasis has not changed at all, emphasis has not changed at all, emphasis very much on hand hygiene, washing your hands regularly for 20 seconds. If you sneeze or cough make sure you do it into a tissue or the crook of your arm. And make sure you follow all those guidelines. 0k, philippa, thank you for bringing us up philippa, thank you for bringing us up to date. And you can keep up to date with all the developments concerning the coronavirus outbreak and the symptoms to watch out for and what it means for you on the bbc news app and on our website. Thats bbc. Co. Uk news. Moving away from coronavirus. Borisjohnson is facing a rebellion by senior conservative backbenchers angered by the governments decisionto allow the chinese firm, huawei, a limited role in building the uks 5g networks. The mps, who believe the company spys for the chinese state, will try to amend a parliamentary bill next week to phase out huaweis involvement within two years. The firm has denied that its controlled by beijing. The home secretary, priti patel, has been given public support by almost a hundred of her allies after a series of bullying allegations. They describe her as a tough, assertive leader who has never crossed a line. Among those signing the letter, published today in the daily telegraph, is the former head of the charity commission, william shawcross, and conservative election adviser sir lynton crosby. 0ur Political Correspondent Jonathan Blake is at westminster. Good morning to you, jonathan. After claims of dark forces working against, further response from priti patel supporters stop tell us more about who they are, who is signing the letter and what they are saying . This is a show of support for the secretary after what has been a very difficult week for her. The signatories to this letter arent exactly household names, i have to say, you mentioned a couple of them in the introduction, there is also a handful of conservative peers. But they do all say that they have worked with or alongside priti patel some a point and to give you a flavour for the letter says, we do not recognise a picture of what has been painted a priti patel this week. The letter goes on she is certainly a tough, assertive and effective leader but even under extreme pressure, shes never crossed a line or lost her temper. And it goes on to say that it is right that good ministers cannot be brought down by smears and gossip. And that is clearly what the home secretary herself is hoping. Showing no intention of resigning or leaving her post. And indeed, earlier this week at Prime Ministers questions, borisjohnson week at Prime Ministers questions, Boris Johnson gave her week at Prime Ministers questions, borisjohnson gave her his explicit backing saying and i quote, he was sticking by her. Nevertheless, priti patel is under investigation for accusations against her of bullying which she denies by the cabinet 0ffice. Which she denies by the Cabinet Office. They are looking into whether she has broken the ministerial code and there is also the prospect of an employment tribunal ina the prospect of an employment tribunal in a few months time. As the former top official at the home 0ffice sir Philip Rutten is taking legal action against the government for constructive dismissal. And that comes around we could be in the situation for a lot of accusations made through Anonymous Sources in the media could well be made in detail and the media could well be made in detailand in the media could well be made in detail and in public. As that Legal Process plays out. But for now, as i say, some backing for the home secretary at the end of what has been a very difficult few days for her. That code from the u mentioned in fact says its vital for democracy that ministers cant be brought down by smears and gossip but also vital for democracy, many would argue, that these claims are investigated and give detailed there, jonathan, about the investigation that is going on. Is that going to satisfy people though, do you think . Well, there has been accusations by the labour party and others that this investigation by the Cabinet Office cannot be properly independent. Because it is overseen by michael gove who is the cabinet minister in charge. Of that office. And he is one of the many government ministers who have defended staunchly priti patel in public in recent days. Nevertheless, it will be carried out by officials in that office and will come at the government insists, be a thorough investigation which will establish whether the ministerial code has been broken. Well have to wait and see what the results of that will be, we dont have a time frame for it from the government. But depending on what it comes up with and what the report that is handed to the Prime Minister says, that will, to a large extent, determine the fate of priti patel. But in the meantime, we will have this ongoing debate with claim and counterclaim from those who believe they have genuine grievances and accusations to make against the home secretary and painting a picture of a pattern of behaviour, countered by others, supporters of hers who claim that there are forces at work here and a Concerted Campaign to brief against her. Because they dont agree with her. Because they dont agree with her politically. 0k, jonathan, thank you very much. The headlines on bbc news. The time is 17 minutes past nine. As the number of coronavirus cases in the number of coronavirus cases in the uk rises to 116, Health Secretary matt hancock says hes confident to wood supplies in the country will not run out. And back on form, Johanna Konta reaches the quarterfinal of the monterey open, beating her german opponent in straight sets, the first time she has won back to back matches this year. Ill be back with more on those stories for you around 9 40am. See you then. Lets get more now on the coronavirus outbreak in the uk lets get more now on the coronavirus lets speak to dr frank ryan, a former consultant physician and author of virus sphere. Doctor ryan, thank you for taking the time to talk to us. You are especially interested in the evolution of viruses, especially those who jump species. Looking at covid 19, what do those who jump species. Looking at covid19, what do you those who jump species. Looking at covid 19, what do you think those who jump species. Looking at covid19, what do you think about how its behaving, is it what you would expect . Yes, its very much what i would expect. In the 1990s i travelled to america to observe an emerging virus and how the most developed country in the world dealt with it. The virus was actually much more lethal than this but fortu nately for more lethal than this but fortunately for america, it didnt develop the ability to move from person to person. And i sat in with people at the centre for disease control, they were very kind to me and the virus broke out in the four corner states, basically in new mexico, arizona, utah and colorado. And i spent some time with collea g u es and i spent some time with colleagues working at the University Hospital in albuquerque and it was very revealing. And the most revealing of all was the fact professor terry yates, a mammalian scientist, an expert on rodents and i asked him scientist, an expert on rodents and iasked him how scientist, an expert on rodents and i asked him how come this virus was so i asked him how come this virus was so lethal to people, terrible disease in people and yet, its natural host was a common mouse in america, the deer mouse, it caused no disease at all . And he explained something to me which he called virus host co evolution and i said what does that mean . Up to them, my attitude to viruses was they were genetic parasites, but was the medical approach to viruses we only saw them in terms of disease and he was seeming to suggest that there was seeming to suggest that there was something going on between rodents and viruses that had nothing to do with disease. So i said, can you possibly explain this to me . He said yes, lets say the duckbilled platypus is a marsupial but lets pretend its a rodent. And i want to know where does it fit in the evolutionary tree of the rodents . He said every rodent on earth has a virus that is co evolving with it and this is what he was attempting to explain. By co evolving he meant the evolutionary trees of the rodents and of this virus exactly parallel to each other which to meet was quite extraordinary i said can you explain a little bit more detail what this might mean and he said yes, if you then gave me this virus of the duckbilled platypus i cant put it onto the forestry and if i superimpose the virus evolutionary tree onto the evolutionary tree of the rodents i can place the duckbilled platypus exactly where it belongs. And how does that relate then to coronavirus, that story . Its quite extraordinary and it means that all of the mammals, every mammal honours including us, but also including bats, has their own crop of viruses that are co evolving. The virus usually wont cause any disease in these animals but the animals allow the virus, if you want, to multiply within them without causing disease. So a virus needs its host to survive . Yes, so you are saying actually coronavirus wont cause serious harm to the majority of people . Im saying it would cause harm to the bats which is where it almost certainly comes from but if, whats happening is the human population is expanding, we are doing daft things. We dont usually come into contact with bats, even though bats are by far the most populous species of all the mammals, the group with the most species in it, bats. And if you look specifically at every part, the bats have more viruses, more of these co evolutionary viruses than any other mammal. We dont normally come into contact. 0k, doctor ryan cani into contact. 0k, doctor ryan can i ask you this . Art way and this isa can i ask you this . Art way and this is a question that lots of people have just asked me out and about, are we overreacting in our response to coronavirus, thats a question im being asked every day . No, we are definitely not overreacting. In another book i said, i outlined virus scenario, an emerging virus coming out of an animal reservoir like this, going into the human chain that is spread from human to human, for which we had no vaccine and no antiviral drug that would treat it. This disease then spreading in humans. If its spread by aerosol or very easily communicate resort of system, this was a virus x scenario and we are in this sort of a scenario. Doctor ryan, thank you for your time. Thank you very much. Lets continue with our coronavirus coverage. Specifically how it affects supermarkets. Our Business Editor, simonjackjoins me on the line. Weve heard matt hancock the Health Secretary saying the government is working with supermarkets to ensure Food Supplies will be readily available, youve been talking to a supermarket executive this morning and what has that person had to say to you . They got in touch with me this morning saying they were slightly baffled by matt hancock s remarks last night. They said theyd heard nothing at all from government directly. And theyd run around to others and theyd had the same story. There was no coordinated approach from government to supermarkets directly or indeed the trade body which represents them and it is their words not mine, matt hancock has totally made up that, that he has been working with supermarkets, weve heard nothing from him. From him or indeed the government. They are just expressing we dont know where this has come from because we know nothing about it. So there is clearly a discrepancy of the government are saying and the industry is hearing from governments and i was also told that Cupboard Basics, you know, tinned food, pasta etc, the sales are going through the roof and while they are keeping up, they are having to work in their words round the clock to keep the shelves stocked and added they didnt think the government saying dont panic buy was particularly helpful because the people dont hear that the right way and they get concerns. And further to that, they said we are having to use processes and Staffing Levels be put in place for a new deal brexit, right now to keep those shelves stocked now. They thought the advice should be people should keep shopping normally and the government comments were unhelpful and misleading. Let mejust comments were unhelpful and misleading. Let me just get you to reiterate that, you are saying the person who called you on the other is that you have subsequently spoken to supermarket executives, say they have had no direct contact from the government and the supermarkets trade body is also saying it has no direct contact from the government, is that correct . The supermarket executive i spoke to said they had had no direct contact from the government, the trade body representative said the idea that we do not recognise the idea that there is any coordinated approach from government to make sure that supermarket suppliers are coming. And they also likened these comments to some comments that michael gove made before i no deal brexit deadline earlier this year. At the end of the year. Where he said weve spoken to retailers and they are ready for a new deal brexit. Again, they said they did not recognise that they ever made those comments and so that they ever made those comments andso. Loss of sound. Hello, simon, can you hear me . I can hear you. Simon, just to pick up, i wa nted hear you. Simon, just to pick up, i wanted to ask you one final point in case we lose the line. More broadly, how art supply chain pairing up with this extra demand . Well, they say theyre managing this extra demand . Well, they say they re managing to this extra demand . Well, they say theyre managing to keep up with demand. But they are having to work round the clock. Thats all i can say, thats the only account ive had from one leading supermarket, they are saying they are keeping shelves stocked but sales of things like tinned goods and pasta and Cupboard Basics are going through the roof, they are keeping up with it but as i say, having to work round the clock and use processes they put in place to cope with a new deal brexit. I cant see any more than that, thats the first hand account i got from one leading supermarket. 0k, simon, thank you very much. We are just hearing supermarket. 0k, simon, thank you very much. We arejust hearing in the last few moments the vatican city has confirmed its first case of coronavirus. Confirming that one patient has tested positive for coronavirus in a clinic within the vatican city state. They were suspended all nonessential appointments inside the clinic and are only keeping the emergency room open, this is from our producer in rome. A little bit more detail coming in and that, let me see if it adds anything to what i told you. Repeating that there is one patient who has tested positive for coronavirus. Add Patient Services in vatican clinics have been also suspended to sanitise areas in the clinics. He said Emergency Services though will be continuing adding that the vatican itself had informed Italian Health authorities. Italy of course, the scene of the largest european outbreak of coronavirus. Moving on to other news. An nhs trust at the centre of an inquiry into preventable baby deaths is to repay almost a Million Pounds that it received in 2018 for providing good maternity care. Shrewsbury and telford nhs trust was paid the moneyjust weeks before inspectors rated its Maternity Services as inadequate. More than 900 families have contacted the inquiry to report concerns. Frankie mccamley, bbc news. Now its time for a look at the weather. Good morning to you, i think this picture from North Yorkshire sums it up picture from North Yorkshire sums it up very nicely, blue skies overhead, frost underfoot for many of us today. Many of us will have a similar picture, without the frost, into the afternoon. There are exceptions, though. The bulk of the showers in these areas. There will be one or two drifting eastwards but for the vast majority, your day sta rts for the vast majority, your day starts dry and sunny and it will finish in the same way. The sun is now getting a bit stronger day by day. By the time we get to the evening rush hour, a bit blustery towards the south west but across the western half of england, particularly wales, we will continue to see a few showers. Western scotland, there could be a few downpours for the journey home from work. It does mean oh frost will form very quickly tonight across many parts of the country. But second half of the night, as the cloud comes in, patchy rain or drizzle, temperatures lifting tomorrow morning. There could be a bit of snow preceding it on the scottish mountains. These are the temperatures at eight oclock on saturday morning. There is more wet and windy weather to come this weekend. Hello this is bbc news. The headlines. As the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the uk rises to 116, Health Secretary matt hancock says hes confident that Food Supplies in the country will not run out. Theres absolutely no need for individuals to go around buying more than they need. And in fact, part of the response to this has to be us coming together. It comes as more than 140 british nationals are stranded on a cruise ship off San Francisco which is not being allowed to dock in the city after some passengers developed flu like symptons. Almost 100 allies of home secretary priti patel have written a letter defending her, after a series of bullying allegations. The duke and duchess of sussex have taken part in one of their last official engagements before they quit royal life later this month. Time now for the morning briefing, where we bring you up to speed on the stories people are watching, reading and sharing. Theres lots of discussion on the coronavirus, as you might expect. An interesting tweet by vice news producerjulia lindau, whos been reporting on the coronavirus outbreak in italy, has had thousands of retweets and likes. She landed late last night atjfk airport in new york after reporting on coronavirus in milan and lombardy, the epicenter of italys outbreak. She says. We heard earlier about the grand princess cruise ship, which is anchored off San Francisco after passengers developed flu like symptoms. This footage shows the National Guard dropping off coronavirus testing kits to the cruise ship. It comes as the white house has acknowledged the country does not have enough test kits. You can find out more about that story on our website. An american man who contracted coronavirus on board another cruise ship, the diamond princess, which was quarantined off japan last month, says hes received graphic Death Threats. Carl goldman is back in the United States and is still in self isolation in a secure unit in nebraska. Hes been speaking to the bbcs Victoria Derbyshire programme. Theres a lot of unnecessary hysteria out here, and ijust would urge everybody to chill a bit, use some common sense, and if were let loose, were no longer contagious. And can we have an idea of what those threats say . I dont even want to get into them, theyre as graphic as can be in terms of threatening our lives, getting very graphic about the kind of debts we would have, making threats on our grandkids. Of deaths we would have, making threats on our grandkids. There are crazies out there and were now dealing with them. And you can hear more of that interview on the Victoria Derbyshire programme in half an hour. And there are still questions over whether a vaccine will be ready in time to help deal with this outbreak. The chief scientific officer, sir Patrick Vallance, has said this morning that he doesnt think its likely. Dont think we will for i dont think we will get a vaccine for this outbreak. I dont think we will get something in time and of the correct scale, for this outbreak. That said, there have been remarkable changes in the ability to make and discover vaccines just in the last few years, and so, things have progressed much more quickly than they would have done in the past, and it is not unreasonable to assume that we will end up with a vaccine, and we may do so in a year, 18 months, which is remarkable when you considerjust a few years ago, it would have taken 20 years to do that. There are plenty of photographs of duke and duchess of sussex, but one photo in particular is catching people is attention. In other news there are plenty of photographs of the duke and duchess of sussex at one of their final appearances as working royals last night, but one photo in particualar is catching peoples attention. This of the coupple arriving in the rain was taken by the royal photographer Samir Hussein and has attracted a lot of praise on social media. Royal editor at hello emily nash calls it a beautiful shot. Elliot wagland, Evening Standard head of pictures, tweeted what a picture. And derek momodu, associate picture editorfor the daily mirror, says. Love this photo even the rain cant dampen their glow. Looking at the bbc news app, not coronavirus, the most read, for a change. This is a story about a man who was jailed for looking and ice cream ina who was jailed for looking and ice cream in a shop in texas. The 24 year old put the ice cream back into the freezer in the walmart supermarket. He has beenjailed for 30 days and given a number of other sanctions as well. He had gone back into the shop with a receipt, he did pay for the ice cream, but then licked it and put it back in the freezer. It followed a similar stunt that had been shown on social media. So, he went back with his father, showed the receipt for the ice cream, but it was decided that they couldnt take the risk that other ice cream in the freezer perhaps had been effected and so he was jailed, given a six month suspended sentence, 100 hours of unpaid work and a 1000 fine. At a number three, you have that story about the white house acknowledging that the usa does not have enough coronavirus test kits. And then, looking down at the most watch, at number one, we have a story about a have a go hero in australia, in queensland, this man giving chase to a suspect. He has got his dog with him as well. The dog seems quite chilled out about the whole thing. But he tackled the man and help the police to catch him. As it says, you havent seen it yet. The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged with several offences, including drug related offences. Thats it for todays morning briefing. Sport now, and for a full round up, we go to the bbc sport centre, and mike. Good morning. Englands women, must hate playing the usa. Their current slump started last summer, with a 2 0 defeat to the americans in the world cup semi finals, and their poor form continued, as englands defence of their she believes cup got off to a disappointing start. Katie gornall was watching for us in orlando. They call orlando the beautiful city, a place for thrill seekers and those seeking a change of pace. After the highs and lows of 2019, england came here needing to recover some momentum, and with the aim of overhauling the best in the world. First, the formalities, a little more cautious in light of coronavirus. But it wasnt long before the shackles were off for the usa. Carly telford kept england in it. A fine save by telford. Weakened by injury, england had chances but couldnt take them. After the break, Christen Press would show them how its done. There was nothing telford could do about this. 1 0, world champions ahead. Too much room, too much time. With england vulnerable, the us struck again. At 37 years old, carli lloyd just keeps getting better. Lloyd, and thats what she does so supremely well. Englands plans had unravelled in minutes. After running the usa close at the world cup, this felt like a backwards step. A sixth defeat in nine games. England second best in every way. What we were saying at half time was, there was nothing to be scared of, nothing to be fearful of. Ultimately, two bits of, well, the first goal was magic, the first goal was a brilliant strike. The second goal, i thought, was poor defensively, which we need to be better on. Butjust two little bits of quality, thats why theyre the best team in the world. After england beat them to the shebelieves trophy last year, this will be a really satisfying win for these us players on their home turf. They were ruthless here in orlando this evening. As for england, they now have to pick themselves up and they travel to face japan in newjersey. Katie gornall, bbc news, orlando. It was a disappointing night for wayne rooney and derby county as they were knocked out of the fa cup by his old side Manchester United. Luke shaw put them ahead before january transfer window signing odion ighalo scored twice to complete a 3 0 victory. United will play norwich city in the quarterfinals. Tennis british number onejo konta takes on the 18 year old russian Anastasia Potapova later today for a place in the semi finals today for a place in the semifinals of the monterrey open. Playing in white here, she beat Tatjana Maria of germany in straight sets to reach the last eight. Its the first time konta has won back to back matches this year. This has caught her eye on social media this morning. Congratulations to tracey neville, former england netball coach, on the birth of baby nev. Shes posted pictures of neville on twitter, and given the sporting prowess of her family, with footballing uncles, gary and phil, Nev Geoffrey Timmins wont be short of top coaching as he starts throwing or kicking a ball. Lets have a look at some of this mornings back pages, which are dominated by football. Headline of the day goes to the mail. Iggy pops rooneys bubble after Manchester United striker igharlo, ruined any chance of a happy reunion for derbys wayne rooney with his former club. The express focuses on potential trouble for tottenham midfielder eric dier, it says he could face a fine or ban, after the jumped into the crowd the other night apparently going to the defence of his brother who was allegedly getting abuse from a fan. Concerns over the coronavirus could leave England Rugby out of pocket. Their game against wales tomorrow will be the last for now in the six nations, and next weekends postponed match in italy could cost them if it could have been the match that won them the title. That depends on frances remaining games, though. Thats all the sport for now. Its 35 years since dna fingerprinting was first discovered. Since then, its been used in millions of Police Investigations across the world. But it was first used in 1987 to convict the killer of two teenage girls in leicestershire, preventing a grave miscarriage of justice, as Graham Satchell reports. November 1983. The body of a 15 year old girl, lynda mann, is found in a village near leicester. Its still raw. And i cant believe that, after 35 years. She was such a lovely girl. It was wrong. Three years later and a second girl is found less than a mile away. Dawn ashworth was also 15. When dawns body was found, police knew straightaway they were looking for a serial killer. What happened during the course of this investigation would change Police Detective work around the world forever. David, just explain what all this pile of stuff is . These are mementos from the case, are they . David baker, who is now 84, was leading the double murder investigation. Hed arrested a 17 year old, richard buckland. Buckland had admitted the second murder, but there was a problem. There was no circumstantial evidence against him on the first murder, and he totally denied it. You were convinced it was one murderer . Yes. David had read in the local paper about research being done at the university of leicester. Professor Alec Jeffreys had attached dna from cells to photographic film. The result, each persons individual dna could be read. David baker contacted professor jeffreys to get bucklands dna tested. Nobody had ever attempted a crime scene dna analysis, a real life crime scene dna analysis, before. Would the test find the killer . Would bucklands dna match that found at the crime scene . They came back not connected. The result was stunning. A blow to you . Well, it was a blow, because it meant that wed got the wrong man. Buckland was released. Ina criminal case, it the very first time dna profiling was used dna profiling was used in a criminal case, it exonerated a suspect. David baker was back to square one. Two murders, one killer, no suspect. It says, will the killer strike again . How can you help to trap him . We made a decision there and then to use the dna system as part and parcel of the inquiry. What happened next was extraordinary. Police asked all the men who lived in the local area to give a sample of their dna. More than 5,000 men gave a blood sample voluntarily, and eventually the killer was caught. This is pitchfork, he went from being a very normal family man to a murderer in a split second. Colin pitchfork, a local baker, was sentenced to life, the first person ever to be convicted on the basis of genetic evidence. Today, there are ongoing debates about dna, how the information is stored, who should have access to it, how its used. But lyndas family have no doubts about genetic profiling and the historic role it played in solving a double murder. Dr turi king is a reader in genetics and archaeology at the university of leiecester. She was the lead geneticist who identified king richard iiis remains. She was also a student of sir alecjeffrey, who created dna fingerprinting. Tell us more first of all about that 1987 case and how it brought the use of dna fingerprinting to the four . It is true, it is hard to even remember a time before dna fingerprinting, but that was the first forensic use of the case, it actually had been used before in immigration cases, but this was the first time in a crime scene case and this was really amazing because it actually exonerated somebody in the first instance, somebody who had confessed to one of the crimes, but not one of the others. And david baker will tell you that this chap probably would have beenjailed baker will tell you that this chap probably would have been jailed to this day without dna finger printing. And then obviously he organised a very big dna sweep of those various villages and there was a little twist to the story, because the perpetrator of the crimes actually had a friend give his blood sample for him. This friend then went to a pub and talked about it to his mates, about how he had given a blood sample on behalf of the perpetrator, someone overheard it and called the police. And thats how the perpetrator was actually caught in the end. Extraordinary story, and it prevented a miscarriage of justice. Story, and it prevented a miscarriage ofjustice. Tell us more about how dna fingerprinting has evolved since then, how you have useditin evolved since then, how you have used it in your career . Well, obviously, it has gone on to be used in millions of cases worldwide. I think some of the nice things it has been used for is to exonerate people, there is the Innocence Project in the us, exonerating people on death row. It has gone on to be involved in numerous things like animal conservation and diversity projects, looking at biodiversity, this sort of thing. So, it has gone on to impact on numerous fields around the world, medicine, agriculture and so on. And yes, i used a version of it in the king richard iii case. Tell us more ok and so, when i was trying to identify the remains of king richard, i needed to test them against living relatives. Now, because of the number of years since king richard was alive, you couldnt use any old relative to do this work, you had to have people who we re work, you had to have people who were either related through the female line, so, from mother to daughter, to use a piece of dna known as mitochondrial dna which travels down the female line. Then, it was a lovely match with the skeleton. I also wanted to look at the male line, so, male line relatives, a piece of dna known as the y chromosome, passed down from father to sun, i had male line relatives, but those did not match the remains. I was not particular bothered about this because we know that the y chromosome that a man has from his biologicalfather might not actually be the actual recorded father, so you can get what is known asa father, so you can get what is known as a break in the y chromosome line, false paternity, where the biological father is not the one thatis biological father is not the one that is in the recording. But it is interesting at the time because obviously this could have an impact on the historical monarchy, and that was something that the press rather picked up on at the time and i had to keep saying, we dont know where this has happened it doesnt affect the royal family today. It did not affect the identification of richard, but lovely to be able to doing that sort of work in the department where alec had come up with this discovery in the first place. Fascinating to talk to you, doctor turi king from the university of leicester, thank you very much. Its International Womens day on sunday, which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women across the globe. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Here, network rail and southeastern are joining forces to run the first passenger train in british history operated solely by women. With me is loraine martins, director of diversity and inclusion at network rail and kellyjoe ballard, a southeastern train driver. Thank you both so much for coming along today. Lorraine, first of all, you have been working to a 2020 goal, 20 female workforce by 2 female workforce by 2020, but first of all, how have you been doing on that 20 by 20 goal . We have been doing quite well, it has been a real stretch for us as an organisation. We are currently at 18. 4 and we anticipate that we are on track to achieve 20 by the end of this year. So it is a positive stretch for us. And i think southeastern is now at a 19. 9 , to be precise and the next goal is a quarter of the workforce being female by 2024 . Thats right. We have been looking at how we recruit women, looking at the language that we use in terms of advertisements and job descriptions, looking at having mixed interview panels, training all of our interviewers to make sure that there is no bias in our interviewing, creating better facilities for women, lots of initiatives that are making it a much more, double place for women to work. Kelly, talk to me about your route to becoming a train driver, was it something you had a lwa ys driver, was it something you had always wanted to do . Are used to be always wanted to do . Are used to be a bus driver so it was a natural transition. The process was quite easy, the difficult side to it is the fact that there are thousands of people that apply, so, to be whittled down and actually get to train asa whittled down and actually get to train as a train driver is quite an achievement for me. And how did you do it, then . I applied online for southeastern, you do an online application. From there, if youre accepted, you do an assessment today, which is tests to see how your brain works and weather you would be able to do the actual training, because the training is quite intense. And then from there, you have a depot managers meeting, you have a depot managers meeting, you meet the managers. And from there, you start your training. Back to you, lorraine, lets talk about this all female train today. The first in british history. A couple of other companies, i know Great Western are running a bristol to paddington service staffed by women, and lner are also running a flying scotswoma n and lner are also running a flying scotswoman from edinburgh to kings cross, but yours today has already set off, the first in british history . Absolutely, this train is staffed and driven by women, signals, we are making sure that all of the trains are in the right place at the right time, so there are about 15 women that it takes to run the train. So were really played that we have been able to collaborate with southeastern trains to make sure we could do this. I guess where we want to get to is that this would not be a special activity. This is a really great showcase for women to see the differentjobs showcase for women to see the different jobs that showcase for women to see the differentjobs that are available, differentjobs that are available, different career paths and opportunities to drive trains and to deliver a really Great Railway service. To anyone watching this and thinking possibly about a career in the railways, your message im assuming would absolutely be that this is not just assuming would absolutely be that this is notjust for the boys . Most definitely. It is something that the railways are trying to do, get some more diversity, as well as women, into the railways. Well, which is something that men want as much as women. Tell me a bit more about how you are getting not just women but people from other walks of life into the railways . I know youve got an apprentice scheme and a women in Leadership Programme, tell us briefly if you would more about that . Of the women in Leadership Programme is about giving Women Confidence to take up more senior roles. That ultimately will impact on reducing our gender pay 93p impact on reducing our gender pay gap. All of these activities are about creating a much more inclusive organisation. Super to have you along today. Great to hear about that train journey. Thank you both.
