Loans of up to 3 million or nonprofits to buy smaller apartment buildings, over the average listing price of a home one . 7 million in San Francisco, is it enough . We will speak with former San Francisco mayor willie brown. And we are remembering the remarkable life and career of actor Robin Williams, found dead yesterday at age 63. Good morning vietnam to his oscarwinning performance in good will hunting, to the lovable mrs. Doubtfire, how his talent and comedy changed hollywood. He was a bay area resident. Or a microsoft ceo Steve Ballmer is officially the proud new owner of the l. A. Clippers. Todays ruling solidifies that Donald Sterling will no longer maintain an ownership stake in the franchise. Trish regan broke this story and joins me now with more. How did this all go down . It has been quite a process, quite a few months. Let me give you the specifics on this morning. On the east noon coast, the superior court judge did issue his final order. It is in response to the objections that Donald Sterlings legal team filed last night. About a week and a half ago, the superior court judge did rule that shelley sterling had the right to sell the team to Steve Ballmer. Sterling then petitioned Appellate Court last friday, asking they listen to his appeal. That same friday, that same day, the Appellate Court came back and said no, we were not going to listen to this appeal. Sterlings lawyers then issued an objection last night, back to the superior court, to the original judge, who said that this sale could go through. That judge this morning rejected those objections. Here we are now, with the close of the sale having been made official this morning. What is interesting is the timing of it all. This happened around 12 00 noon in the east, 9 00 a. M. On the west. Within about 30 minutes, the transaction was complete. Sources tell me that Steve Ballmers lawyer was convinced this would happen this morning, that the judge would issue his final order, and wanted to make the closing could happen seamlessly and smoothly, right away, not allowing time for Donald Sterling to file more legal motions. If the transaction is complete, is there anything else Donald Sterling can do, any other lever he can pull to upset this . It is a good question. To thed try to take this federal Supreme Court. He could try to take it to the california state Supreme Court. Its unlikely, i could say, that they would hear it. Once the sale goes through, as it has, and Steve Ballmer is the owner of the team for a while, it would be very complicated to backtrack it. Were upset byyers this process. They felt like once the deal is done, the deal is done. It makes it that much harder for them to gain any traction in terms of trying to reverse it, should they be able to. They could maybe look at the Supreme Court at the state and federal level. Andfor all intents purposes, Steve Ballmer is now the owner of the los angeles clippers. Been speakinghave with dick parsons, the interim ceo of the team. What does this mean for the team . The team has got to be feeling an enormous sense of relief right now. Dont forget this has been hanging over them for months, making it very difficult. Can you imagine having to get out on the court and practice or overhang you have this and displeasure from your owner . You can imagine that the team is very excited. Arele around the country excited. As dick parsons has said, this in many ways has become americas team. With dickspeaking parsons live at 3 00 p. M. On street smart. We will hear from him exactly what he feels on this. Trish regan, thank you for bringing the news. Steve ballmer officially the owner of the clippers. It is not just new iphones with bigger screens. Apple is also working on new ipads as it tries to get customers excited about tablets again. Apple suppliers have started manufacturing these ipads just in time for the holiday season. A new fullsize ipad could be unveiled this fall, with the ipad mini coming out toward the end of the year. All of this according to people familiar with the matter. Or apple, it is an attempt to boost the ipad business, the secondlargest after the iphone, but sales fell to 13. 3 million, down 9 , yearoveryear. Tim cook did make clear that apple confirms this partnership with ibm in part to grow the ipad business. Joining us is Piper Jaffray Senior Research activist gene munster, who has been covering apple since 1995. My question is, are the new ipads going to be any different . We know the phones are going to have biggers creams, but what can apple do to get consumers excited about them again . It is probably not going to be that different from the existing ipad. They can add a touch i. D. Sensor, and a less glare screen. When are they going to make a bigger ipad, something that is more of a pro version . In the supply chain, were are not picking that up right now. Eventually, i think that is going to happen. I your earlier comments, think the ipad is still the troubled child. I do not see some of the changes this fall being enough to get that business kick started. Some other things going on could potentially get that going, as far as this fall, that is not going to be one of the focuses investors are going to be eyeing. What about these new iphones . Couldnt they cannibalize iphone sales if they are as big as 5. 5 inches . Big headwind the ipad is going to face. Year, been down 3 every year over year. I think there is going to be cannibalization, and that is a good thing for apple. The reason is the asp is going to be around 700, where the asp on an ipad is about half of that. You have higher gross margins, more revenue. I think the best thing that can happen is for apple to cannibalize their ipad sales with an ipaq with an iphone. We have seen reports today that apple is speaking with hospitals about integrating some health kit,the which might be a big feature of in an iwatch, if that is coming. What do we know . Willalthkit and homekit make your ipad and phone do Different Things in the next few years. I think this is important framework to how we are going to think about apple devices. I would not expect anything Game Changing in the next 36 months. You start to see how this company can create new uses of technology. I think they are doing all the right stuff. I think investors will be satisfied with the updates to the iphone, along with a watch in the nearterm. I think longer term the health kit, and ibm relationship should yield better units. The simple take away is that numbers should be inching up as we get into on the 15. As you are hearing more about what is in the product pipeline, isknow tim cook has said it the greatest pipeline in 25 years. Another apple executive says that. Do you believe that . Now that you have some clues about what is coming. We have thought a lot about that. We have gone back and pieced together all the things we are talking about. Box forre checking the the greatest roadmap or the greatest product releases, i think this is going to be close to it. As far as the things that are going to happen, it is the biggest in the last 25 years. As far as the actual impact to the model, that is debatable. Obviously, the iphone transformed the company, and all these combined will not transform apple like the iphone did. The quantity of announcements, i think they are spot on. If you look at the substance of it, it is definitely a positive, but not to the same magnitude as the iphone. How confident are you that an iwatch is coming this year . Give me a percentage. Would say there is an 85 chance it happens this fall. There are still plans in asia. I think at the end of the day, the only reason this does not happen is they kill it at the 11th hour, which is highly unlikely. As always, thanks for weighing in today on bloomberg west. Helprancisco is looking to some low income residents stay in the city, but can the city compete with the Tech Community and its deep pockets . Im emily chang, and this is bloomberg west. If actions are on the rise in San Francisco as the tech boom is driving home and rent prices up. Average rent, more than 200,000 in the city, but some tenants with right control pay as little as 757 a month. Mayor edley is trying to help low income residents stay in their homes, offering loans up to 3 million for nonprofits to buy smaller apartment buildings. Is it enough to counter the the rockets of the Tech Community . I am joined by former San Francisco mayor willie brown. Is 3 million, enough when the average listing 1. 7e of a home is now Million Dollars . I have to believe that was a misquote by whoever produced that story. 3 million means almost nothing in terms of addressing the housing issue. You need a lot more money than that, and edley is committed to a lot more money than that. Rents are rising twice as fast in tech neighborhoods as the rest of the city. In most elections are happening within blocks of tech commuter bus stops, where the google buses and the buses that go down to Silicon Valley stop. My question is, what else can be done . Is it building or buildings . Is it changing building codes so more housing can be built . Is it revising rent control laws . There is so much going on. It is all of the above, but importantly, we have got to get away from, in San Francisco, identifying the Tech Community as the culprit. The Tech Community is not the culprit alone. Obviously, that is part of driving the economy. But we desperately need to do all the things that you referenced. We need to change the respective codes of rules on buildings. To aed to be committed Faster Response for those who are interested in building. We need to become more creative, using the Tech Community to help us come up with ideas on how best to do it. All of those things plus nine control must be reviewed to see onther or not that is a cap how, when, and where people want to invest. 3 million is a direct quote we got from the mayors office. I understand that. But there is no way somebody who said 3 million they must have meant 3 Million Dollars per transaction, or 3 million something. Because you cannot buy anything of substance in this city, in terms of multiple units, at 3 million. You wrote last year that a war is brewing on the streets of San Francisco and a lot of people could get caught up on it if the tech world does not start changing its selfcentered culture. How should they change . The tech world is changing, by the way. You get people like marc benioff and salesforce. Com. You get people making wonderful contributions in one fashion or another. Some are only doing it in Silicon Valley. They really need to do it in San Francisco. They need to use that extraordinary talent and skill they have to help solve the problems of the city. Example, ofty, for google, dealing with the issue involving homelessness, could be revolutionary. Could be instructional for people all over this country, if they would just put their minds to it. I believe they will receive new advice from some of the governmentrelation types who are not techies, but original Government Relations people who have now become part of the tech world. The that happens, transition will begin to evidence itself with good work. I want to ask you about Robin Williams. Longtimeu were a friend. He is a bay area resident. How do you feel upon hearing this news . I was devastated. Robin was a good friend. It when you lose a friend, is not like losing just some person of great celebrity status. Robin was someone whom i could call upon for whatever purpose that might be needed. Robin would show up for benefits of organizations like glide Methodist Church and others. Robin would show up at my birthday partiess unannounced, doing his usual thing. You could not get him off the stage sometimes. He was just an extraordinary person. At 63 years of age, that genius is lost, and i have lost a friend. On the question of him doing his usual thing, i heard that he was always on and it was difficult to know the real Robin Williams. I want you to listen to a clip of him speaking with charlie rose about some of the issues he was facing, and at the same time injecting that classic Robin Williams comedy. Take a listen. Rehab, in wine country, just to keep my options open. I came out the other side and ent how are you different . Drive. Sober and able to experience life. It is pretty amazing. Before the heart surgery, one of the sobering moments was, life is extraordinary. I do not want to miss it. It is a gift. What was he really like . Was it difficult to figure out who he really was . That was Robin Williams. He was never any different, no matter what. In an argument with him, and he would be resorting tactics and those same words, and all the irreverent sees that threw you off to win the argument. That is who he is and that is the way he was. What is your favorite Robin Williams movie . Mrs. Doubtfire. Me to. I love it. It is so good. We have been reminiscing about his movies all day. He will be speaking about some of them later in the show. Willie brown, thank you so much for joining us today. Welcome back to bloomberg west. By 2020, the u. S. Department of labor predicts there will be 1. 4 million computer specialist job openings, but the majority of those positions most likely will not go to women. Up 57 percentke of Overall College graduates, they only make up 12 of Computer Science graduates today. What are Tech Companies doing to get girls excited about coding . I got an inside look at how twitter is teaming up with one nonprofit to train the next generation of female engineers. Breanna, a 16yearold High School Senior who spent the last seven weeks at twitter. But oneot an employee, of the 20 students accepted into a program that gives High School Girls the opportunity to get handson Computer Science experience inside some of the Biggest Companies in technology. I did not know this is what Tech Companies were like. People would tell me that engineers were basically in cubicles all the time, always on a screen. But i see it is a lot more than that. This represents what many hope to be part of the solution to a longstanding problem in Silicon Valley. What is your goal . Gender equity in stem fields, and Computer Science in particular. Women account for 47 of the u. S. Workforce, which is 30 of staff at google, facebook, and twitter. At twitter, women account for only 10 of the technical staff. We are not happy with these numbers. We would like to improve them, and that is entirely our goal. Twitter is one of 16 companies that opened its doors to help make this change happen. When i started doing everything in girls who code, i realized Computer Science is what i wanted to do. A a twitter engineer is mentor and volunteer. Thes a young girl, one of reasons you dont get into Computer Science is because you dont have any idea of what kind of career it could lead to. 14,he learned to code at and skipped high school to study cs in college, and knows too well what it is like to be the only woman in the room. He would come into this class. You have never programmed before. Some guys have been programming since they were nine. Girls who code wants to make coding less intimidating, more inspiring. Talented women engineers are in high demand for the hottest jobs. It was good. I prepared. I worked hard. As the Summer Program comes to a close, it is up to these girls to engineer their next move. In addition to San Francisco, girls who code offers programs in new york, miami, boston, and seattle. After fleeing believes and returning to the u. S. , john mcafee is back in the tech game, with the goal of protecting internet privacy. You are watching bloomberg est. John mcafee made his name creating early antivirus software, and years later made headlines again after freeman believes, where authorities wanted to question him as a person of interest in the murder of an american businessman. Tech game back in the with a Company Called future tense systems, that builds radix to protect her some old data. He recently spoke at devcon and said google and laziness are the biggest things eroding our privacy today. John joins us now from an undisclosed location. You did ask us not to tell anyone where you are, and we are going to respect that. You say that google and laziness are the biggest things eroding privacy today. What do you mean by that . Google makes its money, and so does facebook, by collecting information. If it did not collect information, it would go broke. The information it collects is, where are you . What are you buying . What are you doing . What do you like . What do you dislike . It is an intrusive system that has invaded every part of our lives. It is not just google. Most of the free apps you download, you give permissions. You can turn the camera on, listen to you, send messages, read your messages, read your email. Freedomsonishing, the we have given up or the privacy we have given up willingly. That is laziness. Google needs to have another paradigm for making money, because this cannot continue. Google is not the only company. You are singling google out. What other companies would you point out . I would say facebook would be number two, but google is by far the front runner in the invasion of privacy for the average citizen. It is shocking how much google knows about you. Google would have you believe that if you have nothing to hide, why would you care . I have to take issue with that. Privacy is a very important right that all humans have. Some people, are for example, that maybe having affairs. I hear that happens. Some people may call into work saying, i am sick today, what they are not really sick. We all tell little fibs that allow us to live a tolerable existence. Things are taken away, if we are practicing an alien things are taken away, if we are practicing an alien religion in the baptist delta, we are going to have a very hard time if we cannot keep that to ourselves. One of the things you said you have done to protect your own privacy is gotten rid of your smart phone. You have already gotten rid of it. What is that like . I used to change phones every week anyway. I will talk about it a little in a minute. I think the biggest thing i have done is, i started and this is why i went to devcon. I wanted to announce my new website, brown lists. Com. It is a way to give power back to the little man. Ostensibly a complaint site, where you complain about something. I was audited unjustly by the irs. Whatever. What you cannot just submit a complaint. You have to submit a solution. These solutions and complaints go into the pipe. As people read them, they may add their own solution. These solutions are then voted on. Ofis a way to get anger out the negative arena and back into the positive arena. We already have 100,000 users per day that are filing implaints, everything from, got a parking ticket unjustly, i got a speeding ticket, exxon is dumping oil in my backyard, my farmers and socks. Whatever. What you have to have a solution with it. I am going to be, on monday, posting my own complaint, the police the government of belize is trying to kill me. I will put the documentation him, the whole ball of wax. There will be a lot of people who are very embarrassed. It is a wellknown fact that people are after me. Security guards at devcon there was very strange activities while we were there. And it all stems from believes. Belize. There is a company in daytona beach, florida. We have a video of a man named jean lewis, from las vegas, hiding behind a tree with his phone sticking out, trying to take a video of me. When he was caught, he ran away and pretended like he was on the phone. All of this data is going to go online. This is how i am using my own website to complain about things that bother me. The last we checked, the case had gone cold. What have you heard . Have authorities contacted you at all . What is the latest . I was never charged. I was never even suspect. They just wanted to question me like they questioned all of my neighbors. I just chose not to be questioned. There are no charges. Theynly thing they did is, admitted that they confiscated all my property and auctioned it off. It was a lot of property, by the way. It was every penny that i had. The u. S. Government is happy with me. I have no outstanding warrants. I have a few parking tickets, and that is the extent of it. Why the need for secrecy if you are innocent . Location . Sclose your why change smartphones as often as you can . Because the government has paid a lot of money to remove me because i continue to speak out about belize. Of vastvidence corruption. They do not want that released. They could bring the government down, or certainly the prime minister, who i have on tape ordering the murder of people. You know, it is a dangerous thing to have. They want to silence me. I do not like to be quiet. That is very obvious. I will not shut my mouth. That is my problem. Beyond the Tech Products you have been building, you are working on books and movies. What is the status of those, and who should play john mcafee in the feature film . I do not know who is going to play me. I hope it is not danny devito. Outfeature film is coming in, i think, eight months. Spike tv is doing a twohour documentary. They are choosing the director for that. That should come out in a short time. There is a book humming out. Paramount is doing one based on josh daviss ebook. I have nothing to do with that one. I do not particularly care for josh davis as a writer. But, again, that is their thing. Message to hollywood. Not danny devito. Of futuree, founder tense systems. Thanks so much for joining me today. It is no easy task to run a tech company, especially one in the midst of a huge turnaround. The yahoo chairman gives us an inside look at the challenges faced by many Silicon Valley leaders, next. Time for our office hours, who formerlywebb, served as ceo of ebay. He currently sits on the board of salesforce and visa as well as yahoo . How being then boss is now harder than ever. Why now . The role is much tougher today because it used to be that you could be the hero and everybody bowed down to the ceo, and that job was never easy, but today you actually have to inspire and enlighten your whole team. Everybody wants to be an entrepreneur. They would rather start their own company then join your company. It is harder today than it has ever been. Who has got the hardest job . I am not allowed to talk about yahoo . I am sure that would fit in there. But i would say john chan at blackberry has a huge challenge in front of him. On that note, i just spoke with john chen. It is interesting. I asked him what he thought his chances were of turning the company around, and he said he felt 80 20 that he could add value. He also said this. Take a listen. I am comfortable with generating more value. Whether it is going to be good enough to be iconic again, that is something i need to chew on. I do not know the answer to the question. He offered that up. He does not know if blackberry is going to be iconic again. The Biggest Challenges you take on if they were easy, everybody could do them. I am a huge john chen fan. He had a big turnaround that and turnedrote off, it into gold. I would be betting on him in a big way. But it is hard. He also has a good sense of humor through this. I wonder how important that is. I think it is important to laugh and not take yourself too seriously, but these are hard jobs. You live them. There is no reason for him to be doing this except he wants to make a difference and an impact. I always am excited to cheer people on that are taking on tough challenges. Look at mag, hp. In the hall of fame from ebay. No reason in the world for her to work anymore on anything. She could do anything she wants to do, and she takes on one of the toughest tech challenges in the planet. Do you think she ever wishes she did not . I do not want to speak for made. I think there are moments we would always say, what did i do . But i think she spends her time being inspired by what she is trying to accomplish. Trying to turn around legacy companies, huge companies. At the same time, jack dorsey, running square, has been getting negative publicity lately. Just another profile about square in fast company today. Jack dorsey also got skewered by nick bilton in his book about twitter. How do you handle the bad press . You know, when the press is pounding on you, how do you deal with that . First of all, i have hearing aids for a reason. I can turn them down or up. You should never get too excited about press when you get good press, and you should never let bad press derail you from where you are going. Often, people have a different version of success and what time frame. You have to be anchored on coming in every day, on the long game, winning against all odds. It is better if the world is running with you and giving you tons of kudos. Oftentimes, when that happens, you are getting more kudos than you deserve. And you often get way too much bad press when you are still working hard and you have hope. Thatannot let all of derail you. Steve jobs often gets a lot of credit for turning around apple, inspiring the troops again. How often does that happen, if ever . What john did at ebay. There is a couple of great folks that i think have done really good jobs to inspire their teams. Look at linkedin right now. They certainly had some troubles in the early years, and they are rock stars now. Look at what brad smith at intuit is doing. All these folks are doing a massively great job of not just leading, but inspiring their teams in a new and different way. Maynard webb, chairman of yahoo . I love this segment. Great to have you. I do want to get a preview of what is coming up at the top of. On on online bottom line. About the death of Robin Williams this is one of those things it is hard for people to wrap their heads around, because he was so much a part of folks lives in the movies, comedy, what have you. Deathl reports said his appeared to be a suicide, but we are awaiting a News Conference scheduled for the top of the hour. We will get more details about the death of Robin Williams, that passing stunning people inside and outside of hollywood. We will have the coroners News Conference, and we will bring that to you live. We will speak about some of his movies and how big they were, as big as we remember them. I know Hillary Clinton is presenting a sharp contrast of how she views Foreign Policy as opposed to president obama. It is Something Else you are going to be taking a look at. This is the talk of washington, spreading across the country. She gave a weekend magazine interview, and some of her comments were pointed, although she did take strains to give the president praise where she felt it was due. Now, folks along the beltway are saying, is this her opening salvo to a president ial bid . We will have details at the top of the hour. Back to you. Mark crumpton, coming up on bottom line. Speaking of Robin Williams, we are going to take an indepth look at his career. We look at the legacy he created in hollywood. You are watching bloomberg west. Hollywood and movie fans everywhere are mourning the death of actorcomedian Robin Williams, found dead in an apparent suicide at his home here in the bay area. He was just 63 years old. Weems had a movie, tv, and standup career that spanned the caves. On the way, he picked up emmys and an oscar. He was the leading man in more than 30 films, and his movies have grossed more than 6 billion at the box office. For more on the career of Robin Williams, we are joined by daniel lori, of box office. Com. You think of Robin Williams and the movies he was him, and they seem so much largerthanlife. How well did his movies actually do at the box office . They did very well. Robin williams is the sort of factor who would be able to get hits in the 150 million range. These positive mid range hits they are not superhero movie numbers, but they are the sort of numbers that elevate the box office, the numbers we are maybe not seen this summer. I might not be grand slams, but they are home runs. Mrs. Doubtfire, my absolute favorite. I was surprised to find out that was the highest grossing of all his movies. Performed in more dramatic roles, from dead Poets Society to goodwill hunting, which is the movie that he won his oscar for. Really his comedy, i think, that put him on the map, that we remember. Isnt it . It was his comedy. Like many great actors thinking of Jimmy Stewart as well at the prime of their careers, they are able to personas and seek darker roles. Not everyone does that. Robin williams did that. 2000s, he took roles in films like death to smoochy, insomnia. He was best known for his comedy, but has a great range of characters he played throughout his career. I was speaking with willie brown, who was a longtime friend of Robin Williams. He just gave the birthday message at mayer browns last earth day party. We talked about how Robin Williams was always on, on or off stage. He was cracking jokes. He was being the comedian that we all know. I asked if he thought that the pressure to be Robin Williams is what got to him, and he said no. He thinks that robin did not believe in his own genius, and always doubted himself. In the pantheon of actors and acting, how genius is Robin Williams . How will he be remembered . He is on a very short list, specifically for a generation like mine that grew up watching films like mrs. Doubtfire, like jumanji. Dhs tapes, with family vacations. This is an actor we grew up with. One we got a little bit older, we got to see him in more dramatic roles. He will definitely be on the shortlist of a very wellregarded actor in the future. His career from mork and mindy to good morning vietnam, to goodwill hunting. It spans so many different kinds of roles, and different kinds of projects. Ofwas working on a number different projects, including a potential sequel to mrs. Doubtfire. What happens with some of the things that were in development . A lot of the films he was involved with have been finished are in postproduction. They are either on the release calendar or looking for a distribution deal, specifically the independent films. Mrs. Doubtfire 2, that is still early in the development phase. Anything very popular years ago that has not had a sequel is also in the development phase. I do not believe that was in the imminent future, but you never know with hollywood. We will always run her him as mrs. Doubtfire, and i am not sure audiences would like to see anyone else in that character. It is projects like this, impossible to tell if we would have been able to see the film with him had he still been with us today. I do not think there could ever be another mrs. Doubtfire, but those movies had already wrapped. Night at the museum, merry igging christmas, and absolutely anything already wrapped. We will wait to see those. Thanks so much for joining us. It is time now for the bwest byte, where we focus on one number that tells a whole lot. Matt miller joins us from new york. And it better be good. I dont know. That is really tough. You are making me feel a little bit pressured and uncertain. 5000 is the bite. Not only is that the number that uber guarantees you will make if you are a driver in new york, but they apparently made at least 5000 reservations at their arrival, lyft, and canceled them. Uber employeesg have been doing this. It is a bummer for their business and for the drivers, and obviously passengers as well. I am not sure if it can be proven. There is a strong crosstown rivalry. To each otherxt in San Francisco. They wear company tshirts to work and do not hang out at the bar afterward. Lyft is offering a guarantee of 10,000 in their first month now. You are all trying to attract drivers as quickly as they can. Those brutal car sharing turf wars. It was a pretty good bike byte. You can get all the latest headlines at the top of the hour on bloomberg radio, all the time at bloomberg. Com. Things for watching. Thanks for watching. From bloomberg World Headquarters in new york this is bottom line. Newse awaiting a conference from california about the death of Robin Williams. Is official, Steve Ballmer is the new owner of the los angeles clippers. Car company that protects colorados marijuana industry. To our viewers here in the united states, and to those of you joining us from around the world, welcome. We have full coverage of the stocks and stories making
