Ladies and gentlemen, Dionne Warwick. Do you mind if i sing . If you see me walking down the street Dionne Warwick, one of the great female singers of all time. Walk on by i heard Dionne Warwicks voice, and i never heard a voice like that before. And youre never going hear a voice like that again. Dont make me over dionnes music is generation. They just dont do it like that anymore. When dionne opens her mouth, did i dont know it was dionne . Of course you did. Her voice was like water in the desert. She quenches thirst. She was always so elegant, in her dress, in her demeanor, in her delivery. Always the picture of elegance. Whats it all about dionnes voice has this beautiful melancholy tone that just touches your heart. I could actually feel what she was feeling. I feel dionne was an Ideal Partner for burton howl, a magical combination. The way she brought their songs to life, it was an amazing thing to watch. Crossover to all markets. Dionne was the first African American woman to win a grammy in the pop category. I mean, thats a huge, huge thing. Is Dionne Warwick a legend . Wasnt open to that many black women. The people i was privileged to be in the same room with, not many of my peers at that opportunity. Many people thought she was sellout. Is she trying to be white . All of that dionne had to carry. What do you get when you fall in love this is the way i was represented when i first wempbt to europe. They didnt know if i was black, if i was white. I was going into uncharted territory. Never thought id feel this way you cannot separate the voice from the heart. Dionnes music inspired people to see and look forward to the best part of themselves. She was not just an artist. She was one of the first genuine Aids Activists in the United States. Dionne was a hero of mine. And for a lot of people, she was really the first person in the Music Business to speak up about it. I know ill never love this way again when we look at the great singers of all time, the creme de la creme, dionne is right at that top level. She paved the way for artists like ourselves. Great artist. I sing music. And from that evolved whatever this is i am. I come from a middle class working family. We lived in newark, new jersey. And then moved to east orange, new jersey, where i spent all of my growing years. Lived in a wonderful neighborhood in east orange. Every race, color, creed, religion lived on that block. A we were virtually the united nations. My mom worked at an electrical factory. My dad was a pullman porter. I had an opportunity to travel with him a lot, which was wonderful. My grandfather was minister, and so i grew up in church. You have given me something this evening that i have been missing, truly missing. And its only because ive got to keep my lights on. Gospel will never be that far away from what im doing. Thats what i was brought up singing, will always sing, and its just an inmate part of me. And what did i see they were coming after me sweet chariot my very first performance, i was six years old. We had just finished sunday school. Jesus loves me this i know my grandfather said, dionne, come to the pulpit. He had arranged five or six heavy books for me to stand on. He says, i want you to sing for me. I said, you want me to do what . Sing . Said, i want you to sing Jesus Loves Me. So i closed my eyes as tight as i could get them, and i started to sing Jesus Loves Me. Yes Jesus Loves Me and then i started hearing things coming from the congregation. All right, sing it. Ah. And i opened up both my eyes and i just let it go then. I started really getting into it. And i finally finished it. It was my very first day in standing ovation. Yes dionne, she really knew what she wanted to do way back then. So she came to live with us in her teens. She grew up in our house. When my mom passed, i went to live with my sister, which was dionnes mom. I always considered her more of a big sister than an aunt. And of course i was the boss. Thats what she thought. I said the lord lord take it blessed, blessed blessed is the name of the lord i think dionne learned how to sing because we always had a group. You know, the drinkard singers was before all of it. They were the First Gospel Group to record. With rc victor. Whenever they sang, it was like the whole neighborhood would come out and sit on their porches to listen to them. And of course id open my mouth and try to outsing them all. Which was impossible to do. Gospel music is Something Different because it comes from way down in here. And usually troubles and tribulations that weve been through. My daughter was raised in gospel church. I am Whitney Houston. Dionne is my first cousin, and very proud of that. I just heard gospel all in my family. You know, wed have christmas dinner. Then wed sing. Wed have thanksgiving dinner. Then wed all sing. Legacy in my family, music. Pure and simple. Music. The Apollo Theater gave me my first taste of being on stage, an actual theatrical stage performing. In 1934, a lot of black entertainers were being discovered on the stage of the apollo. So, they start presenting the harlem amateur hour radio show, renamed Amateur Night at the apollo. Tradition. Its folklore. Its the grandaddy of black show business. Ive always loved soul singers. I always loved black music. I grew up playing in a band. I grew up loving it. I talked with some of the greatest entertainers around the woshl world, and everybody wants to experience the Apollo Theater. Any day now i will hear you say Burt Bacharach wrote any day now for chuck jackson, which is one of my favorite records of all time. Any day now when i came to the apollo, i thought i was pretty good as a performer. But i was just standing up singing, and the people were not liking it. So, the next show, i went on, i started throwing the mic and falling to my knees. The people were standing and cheering, and there were women screaming. And they just came in to me. And when they backed off, i was almost naked. Thats when i knew, theres something in this. Ooh baby baby i remember the first time i walked into the Apollo Theater, and the whole wall on both sides was a mural of all these artists who had played at the Apollo Theater. Ella fitzgerald, sarah vaughn, billy eckstein, sammy davis, harry belafonte, the orioles, the moon glows, the spaniels, the drifters, jackie wilson, sam cooke, all these people on this wall. And i said to the miracles, i hope one day we can make this wall. Ooh baby baby the first time we played the apollo, we were terrible. We were so terrible, until the guy called barry, told him he wanted his money back. He wasnt even paying us no money. We didnt have money to give the hotel, you know what im saying, but he wanted that back. But it was a lesson. Theyve seen everybody. So, when you go there, you better be ready. You better bring it. On Amateur Night at the apollo, the audience judged you. If they like you, they applaud you. If they dont like you, this guy chases you off the stage. Amateur night at the apollo is crazy bait. Youve got to go up there. Everybodys jeering, yelling, screaming. You think sandman is going to come out and yank you off. Its hard to get your confidence up. Its scary. Its frightening. You know what can and has happened. And ive seen it happen. Theres a saying that says, if you can make it at the apollo, you can make it anywhere. And that is the truth. Go ahead. Go research how many people won Amateur Night. Amateur night launched the careers of many incredible women. Ella fitzgerald was the first. Then followed by sarah vaughn. Then a young lady from harlem by the name of Billie Holiday. Then in 1957, this Incredible Young Lady came and performed on Amateur Night, and her name was miss Dionne Warwick. One by one baby he was born, born, born he was born in Bethlehem Our Gospel Group decided were going sing a song that was recorded by the imperials in philadelphia. The imperials happened to be on that particular show. Born, born Born In Bethlehem so, we got on stage. The imperials were standing there watching. We used to laugh about how scared she was. She said she was hitting notes she didnt even realize. And when we came off, he said, we you did a wonderful job on that song. Are you kidding me . We loved it. And when they announced the winner, we were winner, which was a wonderful thing. The young man at one of the shows we were attending, hes a vocal group, did Background Work on a recording. Big mouth. Said, oh, yeah, we know how to do that. I said do you use that . Whats the background for . Said, i dont know. Were gone find out, i guess. And as it turned out, we went to Savoy Records in new jersey, and we did the hruzas and the yay yay yays, and that was the beginning of our background careers. While i was in high school, i would travel to new york and do demos. And while i was in college even, i arranged my classes so that i could come in and do those. Made a very, very good living, helped to put me through college. Dionne warwick did what she needed to do to strengthen her professional life. Learning the skills that you need to be a great musician, to get a bachelors degree, to get a masters degree. She changed the notion that African Americans cant study, they cant sing that way. The fact that she can read music, write music, play music, sight read music, which is no easy feat, by the way, takes years and years and continual practice. It allows you, i think, a flexibility and a freedom, just really never be held back. When i met dionne, we were going to record Mexican Divorce with the drifters. Wanted to have a girl group in the background. And these four ladies came in. They were pretty awesome. I mean, the way they sounded, you couldnt tell who was the best singer. Dionne stood out. She sort of looked like, could be a star. They approached me and ask if i would be interested in Doing Demonstration Records as long as they would be writing with sal david and new song writing partners. I said, yeah, i guess, as long as it doesnt interfere with my education because my mother would kill you, and me too. Dionne came in to sing for hal and myself, and we signed her right away. Florence greenberg said, i cant believe that voice i just heard. It was heavenly. Thank god for my daddy who negotiated my contract. And let florence know were going take care of my baby. cecily whats up, einstein . einstein my network has gone kaput cecily oh, you tried to save a buck on it . einstein i got what i paid for. This digital age were living in, its pretty unbelievable. Problem is, not everyones fully living in it. Nobody should have to take a class or fill out a medical form on public wifi with a screen the size of your hand. Home internet shouldnt be a luxury. Everyone should have it and now a lot more people can. So lets go. The digital age is waiting. I did a Demonstration Record of a song called make it easy on yourself. And it was agreed between david baccarat, david and myself that that would be my very first record. Calvin carter was a r at dj records. He called and he said to me, you know that song make it easy on yourself, want to do it with jerry butler. Basically, run the date, book the musicians. That was a big opportunity for me. Well, i was on my way from Hartford Down to new york to do a session for them. And out of the radio came jerry butler singing make it easy on yourself. Make it easy on yourself make it easy on yourself and that didnt sit too well with me. So, when i got to new york, i let him know, you dont do that to me. One thing i want you to both understand is theres something you can never do to dionne is try to make her over. So, dont even think it. They put pen to paper. Dont make me over now that you know how i adore you a lot of companies thought burt and hal asceptor were loses when they released dont make over. They said it couldnt happen. A format Radio Station wouldnt touch it because it wasnt something brandnew, and they werent playing new music. When i played dont make me over, the phones lit up. I knew from that moment, Dionne Warwick would become a star. I was coming home one day listening to a pop station, and it came on. And i said, oh, my god, they did it. I met dionne when i was 13. I remember hearing dont make me over. And i said, you know, theres a new song out by Dionne Warwick, incredible. Burt bacharach and hal david, great. But dionne was the glove that fitted them perfectly. She was the one. In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, i draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny. And i say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever. My very first tour was, we did the south when it was not popular to be black and go to the south. It opened my eyes. It surprised me because i had never encountered anything of that nature. If the black restaurants are closed, we dont have any place to eat. Wed been shot at for wanting to go to the toilet, you know . Or you get to the place, and there are toilets there. One says men. One says women. And around back somewhere, says colored. If youre colored, theres no gender. All the color people go to the same one. We have absolutely no intention of integrating in the south those areas that have been segregated for at least 100 years. They didnt want us even staying overnight in certain towns. We would go in, ease in, do our show, and ease out. I toured with the motor town review. And i remember they had just experienced someone in the South Shooting at the bus and had missed the gas tank, i think, by an inch from the gas tank. The story was very, very clear. May have a lot of fun struggle on the run man old and young twisting the night away shows were completely sold out every night. There was one side, which was white, where they were seated. And the other side was a ballroomtype setting, where everyone was standing. Blacks were on this side. Whites were on this side. The stage was straight ahead. And i remember sam saying, dionne, do not turn your back on the white folk. I said, well, why not . He said, do not turn your back on the white folk. I said, okay. First thing i did when i went out there, i walked straight to the band and turned my back and played to the ones that looked like me. Everybody could hear me. Everybody could see me. So, we came together. We were in south carolina, sam decided he was going to treat everybody to lunch. Our bus was parked outside a place called the toddle house. We walked in, and this waitress came by. She said what do you gals want . Which kind of started the hair rising on my neck. I said, we have a list here. These kind of sandwiches and this kind of hamburger. So, i said, where can i sit down . She said, no, you can stand here and wait until i get it back to you. Theres no way youre going to sit down. Youre not supposed to be in here. Thats when i turned around i was crazy anyway. Everyone knows it. I looked at her. I said, that order i just gave you, when it comes, shove it up your mmhm. And we walked out. Got back to the bus, they said, wheres the food. I said, that womans got it stuck up her butt, where i told her to put it. Less than three minutes after we got back on that bus, a Police Officer came to the bus. He stood at the front, where i had left the door open. He said, okay, where those two girls that was in the toddle house. They seem to have been very, very insubordinate to the waitress in there, and i want to know which one of them said what. I almost stood up and said, i said it. Sam just stopped me. Sam said, listen, sir, i dont mean to be rude to you. However, this is a private bus. It happens to belong to me. You do not belong on it. So, id ask you to please leave it. And he did. He said, dionne, you could have got us put all in jail in this outfit. Done did me wrong all right now thats what i said dionne had, in her act, what i say, ray charles song. She had it in, tell your ma, tell your pa, were going to integrate arkansas. And we were in one of those cities where you didnt do that. So, they told her she could not do that part of the song. And dionne went on stage. And then i hear tell your ma, tell your pa. And when she said inte the cops stopped the show right there. The police told us we had so many minutes to get out of town. We made sure that dionne was the first person to get out of town. She took chances, because i would never have said that if they told me not to. But she said, theyre not going to tell me what to do. She went through a time where it was just hard being a black person, let alone being a black woman. But that made her who she is. And i believe that what dont kill you makes you stronger. To sing back baccarats melodies, you have to have a Music Education just to read what he wrote. Different registers, signatures. Man marched to his drummer. You wanted to be a part of that, you had to march with them. Dionne had been reading music. She was able to prevail at piano. Thats a real plus. There were a few of us who decided that a Music Background was very important. One was valerie simpson. I found Dionne Warwick through singing background. I was lucky enough to get the premier gig, which is hal david Burt Bacharach andi dionne. She can look at a piece of music, the notes on the page, interpret that, and then make those notes come to life in a special way. It was an amazing thing because her training made that sound easy. Burt bacharach and david wrote very rangy melodies. And she just effortlessly sang them. I am forever grateful i learned as much from her as i learned from john coltrane. In the 60s, though we were often visiting detroit, we hear dionne. Her unique interpretation of the Burt Bacharach and hal david songs were iconic, raw, and real. They were just perfect works of art. They were a bit like picassos. When you can take a song and you can completely transform the listener and make them know that every single word, every single note counts, it transports you. Anyone who ever loved i love you anyone who ever dreamed could look at me and know i dream of you knowing i love you stop anyone who would ever take me in his arms and love me do what am i to do her voice that floated through those lyrics and those complex melodies, was magical. Dionne had this huge range. Anyone had a heart, you know, shes very delicate. And then shes very explosive. Very unusual to have a singer that can do that. Knowing i love you stop anyone who had a heart one of the voices that touched my heart most in the world was dionnes voice. I go up in australia, and when i was in 15, i went into a Talent Contest. And i actually won the Talent Contest with anyone had a heart. So, here was the beginning of my career. Anyone had a heart i grew up i wanted to be a voice. My guitar is my voice. When i heard Dionne Warwicks voice, i want to have a voice like that. She said, im jealous. Anyone who had a heart tore at my heart. And its still one of my favorite, alltime songs. Always love me, why wont you they were forming what i would call a musical marriage. And the way she brought their songs to life, it was just magic. I say a little prayer for you i dont like it. I dont like it. I would write and it would be the piano. And maybe i would have part of a melodic fragment. Maybe hal would have a lyric, a title. Thats how we started. The more we recorded dionne, the more you could see what she could do I Say A Little Prayer for you i think hal david was tuned in to the world. I dont call him a lyricist. I call him a poet. He wrote to you, not at you. He wrote, from his heart, things that he felt needed to be said. And i think that most people literally wanted to be able to say. That is why i revere him. Hal was really mild mannered. But burt is very strong. So, you have to be sure of yourself. And dionne had that quality. I would always try to get her to stop smoking. Its a hard habit to break. I guess i had been on her case a little bit. And she had some tshirts made up. Dont tell me to stop smoking. Its pretty good. In the 1950s and 60s, there was race music. So, there was rhythm and blues, which was considered for African Americans. I said check your then there was pop music. Its my party and ill cry if i want to cry if i want to and it was really hard to cross over. There was almost a river that separated them. Back then, you had two different sets of criteria. You had white radio and you had black radio. Had to do a lot with fears that this race music might contaminate people, make them act differently than the side society would want. In the studio, they would record dionnes sister, dee dee, myrna, and sister houston, and then we would bring three white girls that did all the jingles. And the pop stuff in new york put sissys group on bottom and on the top was the white girls. That was the format. This was how i was represented when i first went to europe, paris. If there was white, blond. This is Dionne Warwick. Yeah, ive changed. Thats all they ever saw representing me. Anyway, i walked out on that stage at the olympia theater, there was a gasp. And i told them, yeah, i know. I aint white. I am a tempting, teasing brown, okay . For sure. Seriously . One up the power of liquid, one up the toughest stains. Any further questions . Us Children Giggling hey, i was, uh, thinking about going back to school to get my masters. I just saw something that said you could do it in a year for, like, 11k. Hmm. Barista order eleven yeah, see you at 11. 1111 masters boulevard, please. Gonna be eleven even, buddy. Really . The clues are all around us some things are too obvious to be a coincidence. If you see me walking down the street and i start to cry each time we meet walk on by walk on by make believe that you dont see the tears just let me grieve each time i see you i break down and Cry Walk On By there were some black people who thought that she was sellout, a little too white. And then there were whites saying almost the same thing. She had it coming from both ways. I just cant get over you dionne wasnt really gospel. She had another spirit in her. Where she went was where she was supposed to be. Walk on by they didnt know where i fit, if i was black, if i was white, if i was what i was. The music i was singing was nothing like anything any of them were singing, black or white. So, they really didnt know what to do with me. The Royal Peacock was a true blues club. I didnt know nothing about no blues, but i was booked there. When i showed up and sang dont make me over, i knew they hated me. They had heard the song, thought it was a white girl singing. I told mr. Wynn, i said, im not coming back here. These people hate me. So, he says, no, no, no. Dont say that. Thats not true. They do like you. But youre just not singing the right thing. Do you know a song called what i say by ray charles. I said, yeah, Everybody Knows that song. He said, good. Now, your next show, what i want you to do, i want you to open with what i say. I said, why you want to me to do that . He said, youll find out. Everybody, hey, oh i said had people singing and carrying on. They didnt care what i was singing. It was wonderful. You see this girl this girls in love with you if im in love who looks at you the way i do, when you smile, i cant tell we know each other now you got to understand, there are cultures in this world. Dionne could touch anybody with her music across the board because she wasnt so far one way or the other. Dionne was one of the students that had the kind of material and the voice to cross over and make it an international kind of appeal. The people she was dealing with also knew how to take that middle of the road. So, she hooked up with them. With her sweet voice like she has, you know, it was just the perfect match. Say youre in love and youd be my guy [ applause ] even though i had a hit record in the states, my career literally blossomed in europe. It was exciting. I was treated like a royal princess, which i loved. It was a lot of fun. Marlene dietrich showed me what it was i really was headed for. Ill give you something to dream about, mister. Marlene took very good care of dionne in paris. Marlene lived in paris. I was going to appear at the olympia theater. And berta let marlene know that i was heading that way and to please take care of the baby. Okay. She put us in the limousine, took us to our hotel. Went to the olympic theater with me, did my lighting, my sound check. She did everything, and she just, show me your clothes. So, i took her back to the dressing room. She was looking at my dresses that i thought were pretty okay. And each one she looked at, she tossed into the hall, off the wrack into the hall. Off the wrack, into the hall. I thought the woman had lost her mind. The new jersey started coming out in me. I asked, i said, what are you doing . She said, no, no, no. You must wear good. Couture. I said what . Couture. I said, couture. What is couture . So, she took me shopping. Much to the chagrin of my accountants. That was my introduction to the designers of the industry. Hey, little girl comb your hair, fix your makeup soon he will open the door when a woman is talented and she has a talent and she is displaying it, they become sex symbols. And i think dionne was one of those. The first time i see her, magnificent. The high cheekbones, looked like a nubian princess. Dionne was always the picture of elegance in her dress, in her demeanor, in her delivery. She was always elegant. And we used to always tease her and say, youve got to show those pretty legs. Dont always wear those long dresses. Because when we saw her leg, she had these tremendous legs. There was this sense of pride in her stature, in the way she carried herself, that made you feel good about being black. I used to have thoughts of Dionne Warwick. I am 53. Dionne warwick was always i always thought about how it would be to climb that mountain. No disrespect, dionne. Back in the day, your boy, did i have a thing for you, girl. I hope my wife is not watching this. Yall will have me in trouble. Ladies and gentlemen, Dionne Warwick. Dionne warwick. Dionne warwick. Dionne warwick. I did not want to record alfie because it had already been recorded by 46 people. I said, okay, im going to record this song in one take, and if you dont get it, you dont get it. And as it turned out, im the only one who had a hit record with the song. It paid off in the long run. Whats it all about, alfie is it just for the moment we live whats it all about when you sort it out, alfie are we meant to take more than we give or are we meant to be kind and if only fools are kind, alfie then i guess it is wise to be cruel television wasnt open to that many black women or black people, period, at any rate. I wasnt beautiful. I wasnt white. Lay it on me, huh . He came backstage after that show, he said, so youre a comedian now, right . I said, no. Oh, promises, promises this is where those promises, promises end i wont pretend that what was wrong can be right every night i sleep now, no more lies things that i promised just all fell apart but i found my heart Dionne Warwick has the supreme commonality. Everyone accepts you. Can just destroy a life. Of course she broke down racial barriers, man, because her music is everybody music. Do you know The Way To San Jose . Dionne was the first africanamerican woman to win a grammy in the pop category. I mean, thats a huge, huge thing. She opened the door for many, many artists of different color. To be that woman to stand out and break the mold and show women that you can do anything. King was killed, with so much pain, and the streets were ablaze. Martin luther king jr. Was killed tonight in memphis, tennessee, shot as he stood alone on the balcony of his hotel room. He died in a hospital an hour later. Martin luther king, he was our voice. We dedicated that evening to him, and the Battle Hymn Of The Republic happened to have been one of his Favorite Songs. It got to me. I was a wreck. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord he is trampling out the vintage where The Grapes Of Wrath are stored he hath loosed the fateful lightning of his Terrible Swift Sword his truth is marching on I Have A Dream that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal. All of this craziness that happened in the 60s unfortunately is happening again. The windows of the world are covered with rain where is the sunshine we once knew Everybody Knows when little children play, they need a sunny day to grow straight and tall let The Sun Shine through the windows of the world are covered with rain when will those black skies turn to blue slavery brought out a lot of things that people are not ready to accept. When men cannot be friends their quarrel often ends where some have to die let The Sun Shine through. Black lives matter. Black lives matter. So what has changed . Nothing. But i think there is hope. Love is the answer. You need love. What do you get when you fall in love a guy with a pin to burst your bubble and thats what you get for all your trouble ill never fall in love again no, no at a very early age, i fell in love, i thought, with a young man named william elliott. What do you get when you kiss a girl we started dating and one thing led to another and finally he asked me to marry him. And i thought, well, okay, i dont know. Let me think about it. Finally i thought about it. I said, okay, lets do it. Never fall in love again no, no, ill never fall in love again it couldnt have been more than two weeks after i got married when i woke up that morning and said i didnt really want to be married. So i flew to mexico. Out of those chains, those chains that bind you and i got a Mexican Divorce. We were divorced for two years, and he asked me to marry him again. Pain and sorrow youre going to think im crazy, but i said, okay. Ill never fall in love again that lasted well over 12 years. And out of that came my two incredible babies. Were boyz ii men and were going to sing for you. Mmm we really rehearsed this. I cant believe it. Shes a legend. You know, ive gotten that for a long time. But really, shes mom. I knew she was busy, but she would divert her tour to make sure she was there for a Little League game. You know, those were special times. My mom is a single mom, but shes everything. Shes like mom, dad, sister, when i need a friend. Shes the everything of the family. My kids were very close to dionne. When she was working in florida or somewhere close by, she used to come on the weekend, get a plane, and shed take my kids with her. God, those are the days. I love those days, traveling with dionne on the road. I remember this disco stuff happening. Its not my thing, so i said, maybe ill just give it up. And ill never forget. We were doing the dinah shore show, and clive happened to be there. And he and i conversing about, well, what are you doing, who are you recording for, and all that good stuff. He has a wonderful way of doing. She was ready to leave the recording business. He said, wait a minute, what are you talking about . I just started a new label. Would you consider joining me on arista . I said, no, maybe ill just give it up. And ill never forget what he said to me. You might have left in your mind the Music Business, but we in music, and i particularly, need you. It will stay with me for the rest of my life. What are you going to say . Okay, lets try arista. How about that . I had this song that i knew would be incredible. And the song that i was holding for her was ill never love this way again. You looked inside my fantasies and made each one come true something no one else had ever found a way to do ive kept the memories one by one since you took me in and i know ill never love this way again i know ill never love this way again so i keep holding on before the good is gone i know ill never love this way again hold on hold on hold on well, a fool will lose tomorrow reaching back for yesterday i wont turn my head in sorrow if you should go away no, ill stand here and remember just how good its been and i know ill never love this way again i know ill never love this way again so i keep holding on before the good is gone we came out with ill never love this way again, and it exploded, and then deja vu, that became a hit. This is insane all you did was say hello speak my name feeling your love, its like a love i used to know long ago how can this be youre a different space in time come to me feel like im home in a place i used to know long ago they call it deja vu could you be the dream that i once knew is it you deja vu could you be the dream that might come true shining through i keep remembering me remembering you deja vu so the album sold beautifully and then comes the grammy award time. And the Best Pop Female performance is Dionne Warwick for ill never love this way again. What a thrill i feel to this day. She won the best female pop grammy for ill never love this way again. And at the same grammys, she won the best female r b performance for deja vu. It was a great comeback to inspire everybody. Dionne was back on top. Heartbreaker is another one i was basically badgered into recording. It was written by the brothers gibb. Whether youre a brother or whether youre a mother youre stayin alive, Stayin Alive Feel the city breakin and everybody shakin and were stayin alive, stayin alive barry gibb was riding high. He and the bee gees were so incredible. And i said, barry, id love to work with you. I mean, is there an artist on my roster that youd be interested in working with . Clive davis came to see me. He asked me if there was someone id like to produce. He gave me a list of artists. And his face lights up and he says, Dionne Warwick. Thats the lady right there. He was so thrilled. He said, im going to write you a song for Dionne Warwick. Youre going to get it in 10 days. So i came up with a song along with maurice and robin called heartbreaker. I was excited that this might be a hit for her. He says, i wrote this, he said, for dionne. And i did the demo. Oh, my god. So we both with bated breath were waiting. I would sing the song in falsetto because that was a womans key. And i did heartbreaker that way. Ive got to say it and its hard for me you got me crying like i thought i would never be ive only got one thing to say about that, that she did it better. Maybe thats why she wasnt keen on it. Something about that song i just did not want to record it. Between barry and maurice, clive davis was very strongarmed at the time. I just kept going at it, saying, i just know that itll work. And youve just got to trust me. And when it came time to record the record, where did we show up . What studio did he want to use . He said, clive, wherever she wants to record it, i will go. That has never left me, especially considering the power that he had. Barry guaranteed, he said, this is going to be a big hit, a major hit for you. It is, to this very day, the biggest european hit ive ever had. Oh, yeah why do you have to be a heartbreaker when i was being what you want me to be sudden everything i ever wanted has passed me by oh, yeah why do you have to be a heartbreaker heartbreaker worked out to be really successful all over the world. It was number one. If you want to make a great record, make a deal with maurice. Its cheating, but nevertheless. If you want to know whats going to be a hit, ask me. And ill tell you, that aint going to be a hit. I dont like that song. Im not going to record it. And then youll find out with Dionne Warwick, it is. The freestyle libre 2 system. Scientists at the National Centers for Disease Control in atlanta today released the results of a study which shows that the lifestyle of some male homosexuals has triggered an epidemic of a rare form of cancer. I became very, very vocal and very public with the aids issue based on the fact that were losing so many people. Our industry was becoming decimated with this thing. And this was long before we even knew what it was. The 1980s were a very, very dark time in the aids epidemic. There was a lot of misinformation out there. Can you catch it in a bathroom or drinking a glass of water from a person who had it . People were scared. People forget now what it was like when there was no medicine. It was just a question of when, not whether you were going to die, unless you were some sort of biological miracle. People that we know are losing their lives to this. Somethings got to be done. In the early days, it was hard at amfar for us to organize benefits of any kind because everybody feared that to be associated with this disease meant that you must have it. So to have someone like dionne dedicate a song on behalf of this disease was simply groundbreaking. My sister dionne called me on the phone. She said, hey, look, you, i need you in the studio this afternoon about 12 00. And she said, stevies already on it. Well, i was happy from the moment that i was called to be asked to be a part of it. And most importantly, do something that would help this fight against aids. I thought, god, these people have already done something. Ive got to get off my big fat ass and do something positive. I remember my first time hearing that song as a kid, to hear those voices together and to hear how shes that motherly voice on there that could just comfort you and let you know everything was going to be all right. Snoef and i never thought id feel this way and as far as im concerned, im glad i got the chance to say that i do believe i love you and if i should ever go away well, then, close your eyes and try feel the way we do today and then if you can remember keep smiling, keep shining knowing you can always count on me for sure thats what friends are for for good times and bad times ill be on your side forevermore thats what friends are for well, you came and opened me and now theres so much more i see and so by the way, i thank you you know, theres a saying thats been around since the beginning of time. United we stand, divided we fall. She is an incredible singer. But equally as important is her heart is one of the greatest of all times. Its typical of a warwick performance. She started on a peak and went up from there. And her generosity is also akin to her talent and ability, because the proceeds are being donated to the American Foundation for aids research. [ applause ] she realized that president reagan had given her an opportunity to be an advocate. I consider it an honor to be invited to announce my aids agenda for 1988 as ambassador of health. Dionne has known president s and worked with them since the kennedys. President reagan appointed her health ambassador. He wanted her to use that job to be a voice in america and Around The World to increase awareness, compassion, sensitivity, willingness to do something about this. And thats what she did, always at her own expense. As far as i know, nobody ever bought a plane ticket for her. As president , she was helpful to me mostly because she was never satisfied with how much id done. She was pleased that wed tripled the efforts to help People With AidsAround The World. But she would always tell me it was never enough. And the president needs to remember that. She is truly one of the greatest ambassadors of goodwill. I said what i had to say. I did what i could do. And thats the way i moved to this very day. Thats what friends are for for good times and bad times ill be on your side forevermore all these years later, thats what friends are for is still the anthem of the aids movement. Keep smiling, keep shining knowing you can always count on me oh for sure it was just a very magical day. And the lyrics summed up exactly what needed to be said at that particular time. With the help of my good friends, stevie wonder, gladys knight, elton john, and all those people who gave their time, their money, and their hearts, we raised over 1. 5 million, with all of the proceeds going to the American Foundation for aids research, otherwise amfar. [ applause ] what am i supposed to do now . On behalf of amfar, let me welcome you to our offices. We know that you havent been here before. Were all really excited to have you here. Thank you. Im happy im here. Where we going . To your left. To the. To the left, to the left. Thats a song, isnt it . You were the first Recording Artist who donated royalties to our cause. I think it was really quite special. I mean, there werent many people who were willing to even talk about this disease. Ronald reagan didnt mention the word aids publicly until 87. I know. I made him do it. 40,000 people had already died, so this was really early. I made him say the word. It was at a press conference. What is it called, president reagan . He said, come on, you know the name. He said, aids. I said, yes, you know, you can say the word aids, cant you . He wanted to kill me. I saw it in his eyes. He thought you were crazy . Oh, yeah. The stigma was so bad. Oh, the stigma was horrible. What did clive davis say to you when you said were going to oh, my god. He looked at me and he said, youve just given the Biggest Record youll ever have in your lifetime away. Well, you know, if youd kept the royalties from this, you probably could have retired a long, long time ago. Yeah, but as far as im concerned, this is something that, as i said, i committed to. And anybody that really knows me knows when i say yeah, it means yeah. Yeah. Thats what friends are for id like to see people s acknowledge the fact that she was one of the first genuine Aids Activists in the United States. Dionne was definitely a hero of mine and a hero to a lot of people. She was really the first person in the Music Business to actually speak up about it. Today, youll find out what Dionne Warwick has to say about the psychic Friends Network. Call the psychic Friends Network and get a psychic power reading of your very own. It was the first of its kind. And they got a person who was camera friendly to talk to you about it. She was a host. Unfortunately, it overshadowed who she was as a singer. When you have a celebrity as an apparent, the things that are normally private, Everybody Knows. Sad news for music legend Dionne Warwick. The fabulous woman whos had tons of hits and even more money suddenly filed bankruptcy because of negligent and gross financial mismanagement. Having an accountant that totally screws you over. And the only thing that happens through that is the government points their finger at you. She gives, gives, gives, gives, gives, and gives. Even when she doesnt have it, she gives. She donated all the proceeds of her wonderful song, thats what friends are for, which is a song that continues to be recorded and sung. Whoever needed help, thats who she gave help. Dionne would show up, and for free. So many times and never tried to sell a record. Her sense was that her time was gods gift to her, so were saying thank you. If General Motors can file bankruptcy, why cant Dionne Warwick . You know, whats the big deal about it . You know, there were many rumors about Dionne Warwick, and there still are. Its all gossip, which i find hysterical. Oh, i was taking drugs, not in my arms. I was taking them in my legs. Thats why i wore gowns all the time. People are going to say and do whatever they want to say and do. You know, and my feeling is, and ive said it, talk about me. As long as you spell my name right. Make sure you do that. Its really a pleasure to interact and relate to each other on all levels. Levels of business, levels of religion, levels of education, and levels of misogynist lyrics given to us by these socalled gangsta rappers. Doggy dogg gangsta rap has become incredibly popular and profitable. People either like it or hate it. I felt very strongly about gangsta rap. First of all, it was not going to be ever played in my home. Throw your hands way up in the air and wave them all around like you just dont care i remember driving my car one afternoon. Damon was in the car with me. Those Misogynistic Lyrics came on the radio. Im still on hit, legit, now im on parole, stroll with the dogg pound right behind me and rollin with my [ bleep ] thats where ya might find me i turned the radio off. These kids were calling people out of their name, especially little girls. You dont call me out of my name, you dont know me that well. So lets get a grip on that first. We must support and uplift those who are doing things. However, we must also remind them of the responsibility that they have and carry if theyre going to carry messages. These kids are expressing themselves, which theyre entitled to do. However, there is a way to do it. Mom decided she was going to get respect. I have two sons, and they also understand that im crazy. They do. They understand very well that i am crazy. She decided to have a meeting with snoop, suge knight, a whole bunch of gangsta rappers. I said, well, listen, you need to talk to me, and i need to talk to you. Snoop doggy dogg in the house with the pound like every day i was young, kind of thuggish, not really like, hmm, who i am now. So we like, Dionne Warwick . What she want to do with us over there . Like, we kind of like scared and shook up like we are in the industry. Were powerful right now, but shes been powerful forever. 30 some years in the game, in a big home with a lot of money and success. Not much scares us, but this got us shook wt you all at my home, 7 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning. We show up at her door about like 6 52 cause we want to be on time. We want to be prompt. You understand me . cause we realize what were in the presence of. 7 00 a. M. , my doorbell rang. I remember waking up very early one morning and seeing about 15 suvs, and i knew what they were there for. My sons thought i had lost my mind. She opened the door. I remember she had like a big old walkway. We stepped down, walked into The Living Room area, and then she just had us sit down, gave us some drinks. I ordered some donuts and we had coffee and tea, and we sat and we talked for quite a while. She took control of the room, like youre at grandmas house with the plastic on the couch, and youre trying to be on your you see candy on the table. You dont even want to take none. You dont even want to ask granny, do you want some . Then i made a point, a very important one. She said, i wanted to meet you, and then she said, and i want you to call me a bitch. Uh, what . She said, go ahead, call me a bitch. She came in and started saying all of that, like using our lyrics against us. It was like, ms. Warwick, ms. Warwick, ms. Warwick, ms. Warwick, you know, i got respect for you, ms. Warwick. She said, so if you have respect for me, what gives you the right, and she looked at everybody, to call women bitch . These little girls dont have tails and they dont walk on four legs, so why are you calling them what youre calling them . Its like she was talking to me directly, like checking me at a time when we thought we couldnt be checked. You need to change, you know, your lyrics, because youre going to be a father one day. One day youre going to be married, or youre going to have a child. Its going to be a little girl. You going to want that little girl to come to you and say, daddy, is that you . She just gives me all this stuff, and im like, i aint even got no kids. Im like, man, what is she talking about . But im hearing what shes saying, and im respecting what shes saying, because we recognize and we realize who she is as far as, like, this is a powerful figure in the music industry. And im like, man, why is Dionne Warwick talking to me . I told him, if i didnt care about you, i wouldnt be here. This is like when your auntie that got all the wisdom and the money and the power, come by grandmas house and be like, bring snoopy back here, i need to talk to him for a minute. And its like, what did i do, auntie . Shut up and just listen. Heres what youre going to do. Youre going to a, b, and c if you want to get to x, y, and z. And im going to leave it at that. Somebodys got to give them the guidance, and somebody that they trust and that they feel they might be able to learn a little bit of something from. I was raised by strong black women, so to have her stick me again, like, you know you wasnt raised this way. Dont have me call your mama, your grandmama on you. Oh, dear. All right. Okay, im going to straighten up. And they promised that they were going to start curtailing the way that they were presenting themselves on recordings. About a year later, i did tone it down on Tha Doggfather album. I made it a point to put records of joy, me uplifting everybody, and nobody dying and everybody living. Everything is free, aint no hiv we were the most gangster that you could be. But that day at Dionne Warwicks house, i believe we got outgangstered that day. I think they all kind of grew up, which is a wonderful thing for me. Everything that shes seen in me, everything that she thought i could be a father, a mentor, a humanitarian. Losing whitney was probably one of the hardest things ive seen my mom go through. It was difficult because it was so public. We didnt have time to grieve. My time seemed all too brief. Dont lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and share with me. God wanted me now. He set me free. My family has always been, i think, my rock, you know, my stability. Oh, weve had our bumps. Dont get me wrong. Everything has its obstacles. But we managed to come together and managed to hug each other and say we love each other. Whitney was special through and through. She had it all. And she was a beautiful soul. And i will always love you i will always love you i will always love you whitneys daughter, krissy, another one thats tragic. I miss her terribly. I miss her a lot. I really do. I know ill never love this way again so i keep holding on before the good is gone dionne will always be considered to be one of the great female singers of all time. Those singers dont come along very often. Hold on dionnes music is forever and ever. That type of legacy is protected because its anointing. She opened the door for todays artists. And i truly believe that without Dionne Warwick, there would be no snoop dogg. I keep holding on i do stand on the shoulders of Dionne Warwick, a woman who has been able to break so many boundaries. Thats what defines greatness. Love this way again she is pristine romance. Hold on when you look at the great singers of all time and you go back to Billie Holiday and you go to Ella Fitzgerald and you go to aretha franklin, Dionne Warwick is right at that top level. Hold on hold hold on dionne, im sitting here doing this here because i love you. Dionne, ill remember you forever and everybody your smile your heart of gold so never forget how much i love you long before we are older my Favorite Song of Dionne Warwicks is the moment i wake up before i put on my makeup I Say A Little Prayer for you forever and ever we never will part and oh i love you together together thats how it must be to live without you would only mean heartbreak for me Do You Know The Way To San Jose i mean, who cant rock that act . What the world needs now is love sweet love its the only thing that theres just too little of if you see me walking down the streets and i start to cry mm mm mm mm mm walk on by where i grew up, it was rough. And we used to say, if you see me walking down the streets and i have a gun each time we meet, walk on by. You know, so we used to change the lyrics just to be rascals. When you say goodbye i, im walking on by i just love Dionne Warwick, because shes a good person. Thanks for the music. I will love you eternally and just keep being you, honey.
