J.P. Devine Movie Review: ‘The United States vs. Billie Holiday’
Great jazz singer’s life torturously lived, difficult to watch.
Andra Day portrays Billie Holiday in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” Takashi Seida/Hulu photo
Director Lee Daniels (“The Butler” 2013) brings to the screen a brutal, painful two hours and 10 minutes of the life of the great jazz singer, Billie Holiday, in his film “United States vs. Billie Holiday.”
Following close behind the recent “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” George. C. Wolfe’s screen version of August Wilson’s play, rips back the curtain on the ugly past of many of the music world’s great black performers.

Can Clubhouse keep the party going?
Fake laughs, imposters, and scams — behind the invite-only audio app’s most obsessive users
For the first time since the pandemic started, I had big Friday night plans: a VIPs-only mansion party. The who’s who of 2003, like Elton John, Howard Stern, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsay Lohan would supposedly be attending. Some guy Nick owned the mansion, apparently, and to get through the door, everyone had to pass a vibe check by answering a question, like: would you rather have a cat that acts like a dog or a dog that acts like a cat?

2021 Oscars: Four first-time nominees reflect on success

Card image cap

Earning an Academy Award nomination is always a big deal. Yet on the morning they were announced in March this year, Amanda Seyfried — who earned her first ever nod for “Mank” — was far from glued to the TV set.
“I was absolutely sleeping,” says Seyfried, who adds that she’d agreed to let her mom wake her with any good news when this year’s nominations were announced. And she’s not alone — first-timer Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”) was also zonked out when the nominations were read. Meanwhile, fellow first-timers Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”) and Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”) were busily filming their next projects and had to learn the news from coworkers.

Tara O'Grady and All That Jazz | Irish America

By Kara Rota
Her love of classic music (both Irish and American), classic cars and an unwavering belief in the good old-fashioned American Dream has seen Tara O’Grady through three CD releases and a book deal – not bad for an Irish girl from Queens. With a touch of superstition and lots of winking charm, she shared her story with Kara Rota.
Tara O’Grady comes from a line of adventurous women on journeys. Her mother, from Mountcharles, Donegal, came to America on a boat in 1957. Her parents met at a dance in Woodside, Queens.
“[My mom] approached dad at the bar and said, ‘What county are you from?’ and he said, ‘The Bronx.’ She goes, ‘No, I mean in Ireland, what county are you from?’ and he said, ‘The Bronx!’ She said, ‘I hate when Irish put on American accents,’ and he’s like, ‘I’m American! I was born in the Bronx!’ His dad was from Roscommon, in Ballaghaderreen, and his mom was from Waterford, in Kilmacthomas. Mom swore he was Irish-born because he walked and talked like a farmer, and he was with his Roscommon cousins – they just kind of had a swagger.”

Andra Day: 'I want to be sexy and pow in an awards outfit'

Here is a question you may never have been asked before. What would you do if you found a dead buzzard, one that had apparently died naturally?
Perhaps you would call the police, the Scottish SPCA, the RSPB? Perhaps you would just leave it where it lies and walk on. These things happen, after all. Everything in nature dies sooner or later, somehow or other.
With buzzards, mostly we only ever hear about it when death is caused by shooting, poisoning or trapping, or any combination of these.

Leo Robin Music: The Untold Story About the Easy Living Lyricist's Rendezvous with Billie During The United States vs. Billie Holiday; This Lyricist Is Embattled with Hollywood Chamber Over Installing the Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame Awarded to Him 30

Rockin' in the free world? Inside the rightwing takeover of protest music

“Did you know that Born in the USA is actually an anti-Vietnam war anthem?” Since Donald Trump embraced the 1984 Bruce Springsteen song during rallies, the lyrics have prompted so much explanation it now borders on cliche. Yet it’s no less unsettling for it, becoming a prime example of a startlingly widespread trend for the right wing to co-opt music about struggle and progress. President Ronald Reagan made the first attempt to gloss over the...

Bay Area Reporter :: Andra Day in 'The United States v. Billie Holiday'

The queer, Black classic that everyone in the LGBTQ community deserves is here. We rarely get a serious insight into an actual queer black life, lived on its own terms against all odds, to become the shining (and imperfect) standard by which all others are judged, on every level.
The United States v. Billie Holiday, as a film, is an indictment, instructional guide and spiritual love letter rolled into one. Director Lee Daniels has once again created a masterpiece that is factual and will enhance and extend his legacy, creating stars out of hard-working, multi-talented and multitasking actors and actresses of color. Daniels has garnered performances from them that win awards and create legendary careers that contribute to and critique American pop culture.

Breathe - A New Musical CD 2021

Breathe - A New Musical - BREATHE, a new musical from New York Times bestselling novelist Jodi Picoult (in her theatrical debut) and playwright Timothy Allen McDonald, will have its world premiere exclusively on Overture+ on Friday, May 14th at 8 PM ET. Written as the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded, Breathe follows five couples grappling with the virus s impact on their lives, families, relationships, society, and health. Told in five interlocking suites - each with a different songwriting team and director - Breathe features an all-star cast that includes Tony Award-winners Kelli O Hara and Brian Stokes Mitchell, Patti Murin, Colin Donnell, Den e Benton, Rub n J. Carbajal, Matt Doyle, Max Clayton, Daniel Yearwood, T. Oliver Reid and Josh Davis. Each suite of Breathe, titled after a symptom of COVID-19, features a score from different composers, including longtime songwriting duo Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich (Ever After), Rob Rokicki (The Lightning Thief) and Rebecca Murillo (Not Quite Extinct), Daniel Mertzlufft and Kate Leonard (Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical), Tony Award-winner Doug Besterman (Little Did I Know) and Sharon Vaughn (Hats!) and Jonathan Larson Grant finalists Douglas Lyons and Ethan Pakchar (Five Points).

Oscar predictions 2021: Roeper picks the underdogs, overachievers

Card image cap

Maury Phillips/Getty Images
With the Oscars just around the corner, here’s a question for you: What do the following movies have in common?
“Blade Runner” (1982)
“Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” (2003)
“The Dark Knight Rises” (2012)
“Hail, Caesar!” (2016)
“Pearl Harbor” (2001)
No, they’re not all Academy Award winners — “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” got robbed! — but they all made use of L.A.’s Union Station as a filming location, though not always as a train station. In “The Dark Knight Rises,” it was the courthouse where Scarecrow tried Bane’s enemies; in “Blade Runner,” it was a police station; in “Catch Me If You Can,” it was the Miami Mutual Bank.

2021 Oscar Predictions: Who Will Win in Every Category

Card image cap

Has a Best Picture race ever felt like
such a done deal? Even in years where there's been an obvious frontrunner, there was still some room for surprise come Oscars night. That doesn't seem to be the case this year, where
Nomadland is so primed to win that if any other film were read off, we would say, "
Why do they keep letting Warren Beatty present Best Picture?!"
Chloé Zhao's resilient road movie became the first film to ever win both Venice's Golden Lion Award and the Toronto International Film Festival's People's Choice Award, the latter heralding it as one to watch come awards season. Then

Three anonymous voters share their 2021 Oscars ballots

Card image cap

Oscar voting begins Thursday, meaning we’re one step closer to putting a bow on this never-ending awards season. With academy members making their final choices, we asked three from different branches — a writer, producer and actor — to
anonymously share their picks and the reasoning behind them. Their choices were different, but the trio did share a passion for this year’s nominees, a desire to celebrate the strong work and relief that we might soon be seeing movies in theaters again and not on a streaming platform.
WRITER, woman in her 40s
Picture: This is such a stacked category this year. I would be happy for “Minari,” “Nomadland” or “Sound of Metal” to win. If I’m going by my own standards of what makes a best picture — excellent craft, spectacle and a deep well of emotion — I think perhaps “Minari” might be the top choice. But it’s not that I didn’t love the other movies nominated. “Mank” was well made but didn’t feel timely to me. It seemed like it was being made off a playbook from a few years ago. “Judas and the Black Messiah” had tremendous performances but was not as tight as my favorites. “The Trial of the Chicago 7" was fun and again had great performances but felt a bit conscious that it was trying to be an awards movie at times. And “The Father” was truly moving and had imaginative production design, but I read a review that called it “ruthless,” and that felt exactly right. And I can’t have a ruthless movie win best picture.

Norah Jones Talks Her First Live Album

Card image cap

Oh and Sorey aren't mere collaborators or accompanists; they're educators and composers in their own rights. Of Sorey's drumming, Iyer cites a "life-sustaining kind of magic." And of Oh's bass playing, "Her awareness of and relation to pulse, it's like micro-detail," he says. Those qualities and more can be found on
Uneasy, the trio's first studio record, which drops April 9 on ECM Records. The album is a mix of topical material "Children of Flint" with Iyer originals ("Combat Breathing") and standards ("Night and Day") from deep in their wheelhouse.
Most importantly, Iyer considers the pair to be his musical family; together, they're his stronghold through a racially and sociopolitically turbulent time. And with the tragic Atlanta spa shootings in the rearview, the cover—where the three musicians' names float around an out-of-focus Statue of Liberty—is a side-eyed glance at what it means to be an American.
