And later, a new sunday sitdown with an American Icon, dolly parton, on her first holiday album in 30 years. Her message to a divided country, and looking back on her most famous songs and the moment she first heard Whitney Houstons rendition of i will always love you. I fell over i was afraid i wept. It was just to know that my song, that little song of mine could be that big and that great, and with her singing like that, it was it was just overwhelming. A sunday sitdown with the great dolly parton. Another life well lived later in the show. Lets begin with the steady spike in coronavirus cases as we head deeper into fall and winter. On saturday more than 156,000 cases were reported making it the 11th day in a row with a daily total over 100,000. In the past week alone, the United States has registered more than one million new cases. Nbcs kathy park is in new york city with more for us. Good morning. Reporter willie, good morning to you. This crisis is going from bad to worse, and you really just have to look at the numbers. Back in march and april, a bad week was 215,000 cases, and new york was at the epicenter. In july the number was just under 500,000 cases per week. This week we crossed more than one million cases with hot spots across the country, and experts warn that this trend could continue into the winter months. This morning coronavirus cases skyrocketing to new levels with more than a dozen states breaking daily records. Governors and mayors now reimposing restrictions to slow the spread. In the dakotas where hospitals are filling up and frontline workers where stretched thin, governor doug burgham making an aboutface issuing a mask mandate. Our situation has changed, and we must change with it. Reporter both oregon and new mexico are headed toward partial lockdowns, crippling businesses. In new york city, deputies shut down an illegal club for violating emergency orders hours after a new curfew went into effect. Governor cuomo taking another swipe at the president who threatened to withhold vaccines from the empire state. He has created problems for the vaccine because the vaccine is only relevant if people will take it, and we want people to take it. Reporter but the head of operation warp speed warning that thousands of lives could be at risk if their work on Vaccine Development is interrupted. Calling on the white house to allow contact with joe bidens Transition Team. As covid spikes, shoppers are back to panic buying. Jamming parking lots and emptying grocery shelves. The crisis magnified at this north Texas Food Bank where thousands of families waited hours in line. But the price of the pandemic rising above the economics. Frontline workers are at their breaking point. Everyone feels like they ran a marathon and now were going asked to do an iron man, and were just tired. Reporter and millions of families are grappling with tragedy. 4yearold raydon gonzalez lost both his parents to covid. His dad in june and his mom last month. He said he wishes he could bring her back. I cant emphasize enough the severity, the seriousness, and the hurt that this pandemic can cause. So were your masks, be safe. Reporter a critical reminder cutting through the pain. And as we head into the Holiday Travel season, consider this california, oregon, and washington are asking returning residents as well as visitors to selfquarantine for 14 days after arrival. Willie . All right, kathy park starting us off in new york city this morning. Thank you so much. Dr. Tom frieden served as the director of the centers for Disease Control and prevention under the obama administration. Hes now president and ceo of resolve to save lives, a Global Health initiative. Dr. Frieden, good to see you. Boy, you look at the images in kathys piece, and it takes you back to march and april and what was happening in new york city and other places now happening across the country. We cant say you didnt warn us. You and others said were going to go through phases here and this is likely to come back in fall and winter. Where are we right now in your assessment . Well, first off, were seeing more cases in more places than ever. If you look at a single number, hospitalizations there at the highest number ever, more than 60,000 americans in hospitals today. That member will increase within the next month to over 100,000. So stressed as hospitals are today, theyll continue to be stressed. And tragically, deaths are continuing to increase, and well hit by the end of the year 2,000 deaths a year by the time president elect biden is inaugurated, more than 300,000 people will have died, reported to have died from covid, even more will have actually died from it. Theres really a lot that all of us can do to turn this around. Its not inevitable. Its not just the government, all of us have a role to play, wearing masks, which most people are doing, watching our distance, washing our hands, and avoiding crowded indoor spaces. And unfortunately, that means changing our thanksgiving plans because traveling from one place to another, meeting inside with lots of families for a long time without masks, thats a formula for a massive explosion. Unless we change our thanksgiving plans, were going to have a very unmerry christmas im afraid. Thats an important message. I think a lot of people coming to terms with the fact this that will have to be a different thanksgiving and Holiday Season. You mentioned inauguration, were still more than two months away from the Biden Administration taking over. What coordination in a transition would we be seeing and shod we be seeing should we be seeing now between the Trump Administration in this case and bidens Transition Team . In this country we only have one government at a time. And the Current Administration needs to step up in terms of responding to the crisis that we have with coronavirus. At the same time, a transition is like a relay race. Youre passing the baton. That has to be done smoothly because any stumble is going to, in this case, cost lives. That means ramping up our response and getting ready for a Vaccination Campaign that will be extraordinarily complex. Both of those things need to happen because the vaccine is not going to magically make the pandemic go away, and its not going to come as soon as we like. Its very fast. We dont know how the vaccine will work. We dont know which groups it will work for and whether it will be safe. Its encouraging to see a 90 protection rate from the pfizer product and other products will be coming out in the near future with their data. So this is a crucial time to have close coordination so that baton can be passed smoothly. And in the case of coronavirus response, we can reduce current cases, prepare for a Vaccination Campaign thats going to be extraordinarily important and complex, and continue to improve our work being careful about what and when we close things. This is not about lockdown. Wed like to keep schools open. Wed like to keep retail open if at all possible. Wed like to keep the economy moving. At the same time, we dont spread the infections. That means the government, communities, families, and individuals all doing our part to fight together. Theres only one enemy here, and its a virus, the coronavirus. And the more were unified, the more we can stop it. And as you say, time is of the essence. Dr. Tom frieden, former head of the cdc. Thank you so much. Overnight at least 20 people were arrested in washington after violence broke out during clashes between pro and antitrump protesters. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is at the white house with more. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. The hours after the protrump rally that brought thousands to washington turned more dangerous with clashes in the streets, attacks on trump supporters, injuries and some arrests. Now, social media documented some of the violence and amplified that with posts that caught the attention of President Trump himself, who used his twitter feed to denounce the quote, human radical left garbage and he called out washingtons mayor and the metropolitan police to intervene, saying, get going, do your job and dont hold back. Now, earlier thousands filled the streets to show support for President Trump and his unfounded claims of fraud in his election defeat. The president also used his motorcade and his secret Service Protection to make his way through that crowd with a driveby stop earlier in the day before he went golfing as demonstrators continue to spend hours in the city marching from one point to the other on his behalf willie Kelly Odonnell at the white house. Chuck todd, nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Good morning. Ump getting north deat the winner is joe biden, President Trump getting North Carolina we know joe biden is the president elect, so my question to you is how much more space do republicans continue to give the president before they turn their focusto joe biden . I think the georgia recount or audit, however you want to classify it, is sort of the moment that will, i think, unofficially end this with many republicans. Look, the president is getting what he wants, and when they see that nothing is going to change, and well have that answer by middle of next week, wednesday, certification by friday. If this is going on after that, then, willie, we have to start looking at this as a constitutional crisis. But i think when that georgia audit shows, which is just as likely bidens vote total grows, it doesnt even shrink, then thats when this end game truly starts to begin. We heard this week republican senators using their democratic friends to ask him to congratulate joe biden on their behalf chuck, thank you very much just a quick case. Well look for more this morning when chuck sits down for an exclusive interview with president elect bidens newly named chief of staff, ron klain. Nearly two decades life Whitney Houston made it a worldwide hit again. More on that in a moment. By now, dollys story is american lore. Born in her words dirt poor as the fourth of 12 children who grew up together in a small tennessee cabin with no electricity and no running water, but with lots of music. Dolly took her guitar and left for nashville the day after she graduated from high school. The 74yearold powerhouse has not slowed down since. Why did you feel like this was the year for a Dolly Parton Christmas album . Ive been wanting to do another for a long time and had the time to do it since we all had to hole up at home. I started writing some of these original songs, and i gathered up some more of the old classics. And grabbed a bunch of friends and we just kind of went for it. Pretty paper pretty ribbon pretty paper, youre duet with willy nelson. I didnt realize he wrote that song. He did write that song. And its bun o aeps been one oe for years. I said, willie, will you sing pretty paper with me because i love the song . He said, are you crazy, of course ill play it. He played on the guitar. Dolly famously grew up poor in the Smoky Mountains of east tennessee where her mother made sure christmas was special and that the familys tworoom house was filled with music. Mrs. Parton encouraged her daughters singing and songwriting, and dolly wrote her first song at just 6 years old. Little tiny tassel top. Not one of your biggest hits, but an important song nevertheless. No. No. Nobody ever heard it except when i became a star. It was just about a little cobb doll that mama had made me. I was singing i named her tassel top. And i would do little tiny tassel top i love you an awful lot hope you never go away i want you to stay miss dolly parton. Tiny tassel top leads off thed dadolly parton my life in lyrics. Dolly shares the stories behinds some of her most famous songs. Please dont take him just because you can ive got to ask about jolene. Your husband was spending too much time at the bank for somebody who didnt have much money was the way i think you said it. Thats true that i was jealous of this pretty girl at the bank. And my husband said he was getting alone. He was in asphalt paving. I think you best kind of get on back to the house. Its going to be your ass and your fault. The name jolene, i was signing an autograph years ago on stage. This little girl said, would you sign to jolene . I love that name. I was singing ining sno snosno jolene, jolene. And went to the bus and wrote stuff to go with it. Now i will always love you, theres some mythology around that song that maybe you wrote g g jolene and i will always love you on the same night or same week, is that true . It is. Got to be true. We were looking through my files to get my old cassettes. They were putting them on the hard drive to save them. The guy said, do you realize that jolene and i will always love you were on the same cassette. That must have a really good night. The greatest night in the history of american songwriting. Incredible. I was interested ed ted to hea said when you heard Whitney Houston sing your song it was one of the most powerful moments not of your career but of your life. I was driving home one day, had the radio on, and i heard her singing if i and it didnt click. Then when she started singing the song, it was overwhelming. And i withdrawal i pulled over to the side of the roadway because i was afraid i would wreck. It was overwhelming. Lets try to make a even as she continues her prolific music career, dolly does some of her best work outside the studio helping those in need. Through her imagination library, dolly has donated nearly 150 million books to children around the world, even hosting a weekly story time web series for children in the early stayathome days of the covid crisis. Show the colors this color is sleep. Go to bed. Do you have a message for people now through the pandemic but also it feels like were a divided country. What would you say to your fans and to america right now . I think weve just become so divided because people just seem to love to hate. This is the Christmas Season coming up. We need carry that Christmas Spirit of peace on earth and loving one another, we need carry that into the new year. Lord knows i hope next years better than this one. We cant save the world, but we can save the world were living in, maybe im dreaming, but i dont think so. Amen to that, dolly. For a decade now the cavalry wright ride information to help after hushes, tornadoes, and wildfires has been dressed in gray tshirts. What began as an impromptu aid mission to haiti by a group of military buddies has grown into a Global Movement called teen rube con ahead by founder former marine sniper jake wood. The gray shirts show up wherever there is a natural disaster, and the virneterans step up to serv again. Harry smith sat down with jake for our sunday spotlight. Jake wood had two dreams in his life one was to serve in the military. The other to become a pro football player. Turns out i was a bad football player, and 9 11 happened my freshman year. For the next three years, wood wondered if he had chosen the wrong uniform. Pat tillman, the Arizona Cardinals star who left the nfl to enlist, was his hero. After news of his death broke, i committed to myself that i was going to do it. I played my last game on january 1st, 2005. I began training. Wood became a marine sniper. He served combat tours in iraq and afghanistan New York Stock Exchange his book once a warrior, he tells the unvarnished truth of life on the battlefield. Constant fear was exhausting, so our minds coped. In order to shut down the fear, we had to shut down our other feelings. Thats just the way we survived. He lost four of his best friends to those wars. He still wears a bracelet of remembrance. Did the idea of what you wanted to do match up with the reality on the ground . I think it depends what day you ask me. You know, the first lesson i learned is that war is really complicated. Its not what you think its going to be. You felt at times like the opportunity to make a difference was slipping between your fingers. A major earthquake has hit haiti reporter home from war, a restless woods watched coverage of the haiti earthquake. He called a few budbuddies, sai lets go. We can help. It looked like a battlefield. I was comfortable in those situation. Out of that chaos, team rubicon was born. A force mission driven, built to appeal to veterans. One of our values is get it done, you dont quite say it but get it done. Veterans get ittel are and relish get if t and relish the opportunity to help. They want to make a difference in the world, in their community. Team rubicon gives them the opportunity. The team has assisted in hundreds of disasters zones with thousands of volunteers with more than a billion hours of service. Jake believes helping others can heal wounds unseen. What was clay . Clay hunt was one of my best friends. He was my sniper partner. A guy that i went into battle with two dedeployment. I was a best man at his wedding. Good guy. He came home and was struggling with the war. He was diagnosed with post traumatic stress. He ended up taking his own life in 2011, about two years after he got out of the marine corps. When i think about clay taking his own life i was it was driven by lack of purpose. He was searching for meaning. Vast numbers of vets are homeless, many see Mental Health issues as a weakness. Clay says perhaps the biggest problem is indifference. We send these men and women off to fight, we have a responsibility when they come home to understand what they went through. People often hesitate to ask veterans to share though stories because theyre afraid of what they might hear. Theyre afraid it might make them uncomfortable. Too bad. That person had to live it. They had to do it. The least you can do is hear it and help them feel a little less guilty about what they maybe had to do. Listen and appreciate. Both from jake woods perspective, there is hope, lots of hope. I go to work, and i get to work with these amazing americans who are literally dropping everything to deploy to communities and help people. I thought to myself, theres still plenty to be hopeful for. I want americans to think that the best days for this country are still ahead of it, and not behind it. For sunday today, harry smith, new york. A great message from an amazing guy and team rubicon is a great organization. Harry, jake, thank you very much. This week, we highlight another life well lived. She was known as the fastest girl drummer in the world. Id like you to meet our very charming little drummer viola smith. Viola smith grew up in wisconsin in a family of ten children. When her father, a musician and owner of a local dance hall, set out to form a family band, he put viola on the drums because all of the other instruments were taken. His daughters comprised the schmidt sisters orchestra which played local gigs, state fairs, and radio shows. Viola and one of her sisters later started a new band called the coquettes where viola played a big kit with her signature speed. Many big bands broke up as men went off to serve in world war ii, and viola saw an opportunity for women. In a 1942 essay for downbeat magazine titled give girl musicians a break she wrote, there are some girl musicians who are as much the masters of their instruments as male musicians. Think it over, boys. Viola became a star of jazz drumming, playing with Billie Holiday and ella fitzgerald. She appeared on the cover of billboard magazine and earned endorsement deals from drum companies. She starred at radio city music hall and on the ed sullivan show. Also playing in broadways original production of cabaret. In 1949, viola performed at the inaugural gala for president harry truman. Viola smith, a trailblazing american musician, died last month at home in costa mesa, california. She was 107 years when paneras chef claes makes a pizza, he doesnt just make a pizza. In our first high on this masters sunday goes to one of the greatest golf shots you will ever see. It happened on tuesday during a practice round at the masters which was postponed from april because of the coronavirus crisis. Lets get you out to 16 at Augusta National with spanish golfer john brom lining up his shot. He intensionsly skips his ball across the water, a long held tradition during practice rounds. Keeping that skip alive enough to clear the water and reach the green, an achievement on its own, but the ball is not finished yet. Watch as it rolls up into the slope, back down toward the flag, and then drops in for a hole in one. By the way, it happened on his 26th birthday. Believe it or not, that was roms second hole in one in two days. He aced the fourth hole in another practice round on monday. As for the actual tournament, rom is in a threeway tie for seventh place heading into todays final round at augusta. Dustin johnson, by the way, has a fourshot lead there. Our first low goes to this years giant Christmas Tree in cincinnatis Fountain Square which, like many of us, is taking its time getting into the spirit. The 65foot norway spruce arrived last weekend and, frankly, showed up a mess. The patchy gaps, the missing branches, just a general sense that its heart isnt in the season this year. As the sad image took off on social media as a metaphor for 2020, the tree got its own twitter handle, writing, like all of us, im just doing the best i can in these trying times. Good news, though. The tree team in cincinnati got to work to spruce things up. And that spruce got spruced. Just needed some fluffing and beautification was all. We all could use a little sprucing these days, couldnt we . Looking good there, tree. Our next high goes to chris mickich who swam, biked, and ran his way into the history books when he became the first person with down syndrome to complete an ironman triathlon. [ cheers ] crisscrossed the finish line in panama city beach, florida, after nearly 17 hours of racing. The 21yearold swam 2. 4 miles in open water, biked 112 miles, and then ran a full marathon despite some falls along the way. Chris, who could not even walk until he was 4, says he trained four to eight hours every day to achieve his goal and to bring awareness to down syndrome. I can prove to kids that if i can do it, then they can do it, too. Chris mom was not able to attend the race because of some health issues. So this week, chris went to visit her and gave her his ironman medal. He had promised the first medal he won would be moms. Chris now looking ahead to the ironman World Championship in hawaii next year. Congratulations, chris, we are all cheering for you, brother. Our final low this week guess to the sight of an apparent dinosaur on the golf course. When youre lining up your second shot from the fairway. Check out this monster alligator sauntering across a course in naples, florida, during Tropical Storm eta on wednesday. Tyler stolting, a pro at the valencia golf and country club, said he had never seen a gator so big, had to get out his camera to prove it was real. I dont even think the video does it justice really.
