Malaysia airlines said today it is aware of the media reports that the pilot made a cellphone call eight minutes before the flight took off. Malaysia Airlines Flight said flight 370 was carrying a small cargo of lithium eye ion batter. They are the type used in laptops and cell phones. They have been known to catch fire, although it is very, very rare. This is an exhaustive search with pilots going grid by grid through the area searching for the images. It is truly looking like a needle in a haystack. We are talking about a piece of debris, about 78feet across, in a search area of several hundred thousand miles. Even if that debris is, was something significant, it could have sunk by now, it could have floated away, i want to bring you two guests to talk about all this. Art write ght is an expert in d water investigation. Also, with us right here, our friend, richard quest, anchor of cnn internationals, quest means business. We want to alternate between two separate tracks. We want to talk about the search off the coast of australia and the investigation into what happened on that plane, two separate fields. Art, i want to start with you. You have searched the area in the southern indian ocean before. You headed a search for a lost Australian Navy vessel which you ended up finding. What are the challenges for looking at things in this place. What are these ships facing right now . These ships are facing weather problems in sea states. Looking for a small object or going up and down waves. With the sea state of 1530 foot waves. The lookouts on the ship have trouble seeing objects and the radars wont pick them up, because its so jumbled. For the searchers, they have to rule out the area grid by grid to insure that they havent missed anything. It is very painstaking process. I think thats the best word to use. Painstaking. We also know there are also limitations. These search planes may have, some of them may have a capacity of 10hour flying time. Four hours to get out there, only a couple of hours to search and they have to head back to land. We know for the first time now, Malaysian Airlines ceo has said on board, there was a small cargo of lithium ion batteries. How concerning is this about the possibility that they have could have exploded, caught fire, caused this plane to come down. The faa in the United States did a report into lithium batteries some years ago. He came up with more than 100 incidents where lithium batteries had either overheated, smoked, molten coming out of it and they looked at this in great detail. So it is a wellknown, and welldocumented issue with lithium ion batteries. The malaysia ceo in his News Conference specifically said that they knew about those batteries. Those batteries had been packed in accordance with ako, as the organization, the International Aviation organization, according with their regulations and it had been checked and rechecked. There is one small point conveniently overlooked by those that want to put the lithium ion battery argument forward. If they had been an incident, there would have been a warning. If there had been a warning, the pilots might have got a may day out. If there had been a fullscale fire, it would have been reported on the acars system and we might well have known about it. The lithium eye on battery theory is there, it will remain there. Does it hold a lot of water . It should frankly be somewhere on the back burner, because it doesnt hold a lot of water. Lets get back to the front burner. 15 miles off the coast of australia, one of the things officials are asking for, more my d hydrophones. How hard is it to search under water . What kind of equipment do you need to scan that ocean floor . The hydrophone is a passive device. It listens from the ping from the beacon on an aircraft. Once that ping is heard, they have an idea where the location is. If that beacon dies and the pings are no longer there, you have to search for deep ocean sonars. We use deep ocean sonars to find objects on the bottom. They have a rarnge. Our sonars have a range of 1250 meters. We do a swath of 2500 meters which resulted in 85 square nautical miles a day searching. It is a very slow, pains staking process. You want to establish on the seabed exactly where that plane is not. If you know where it is not, then you know where you have to search next. Good point. The process of elimination. Richard, lets ping back to you now and talk about the news that came out today. Again, Malaysia Airlines looking at these media reports that the pilot, eight minutes before the flight departed, made a cell phone call. On a regular day, this might not seem unusual. It still doesnt seem unusual to me. Absolutely not. When you say departed, i assume you mean before the doors were closed and the plane pushed back as opposed to at the end of the runway before it took off. Every Flight Attendant, every pilot ive ever known, is making phone calls veirtually to the time they clothes the doors. Almost like the passengers. You have one thing to remember. You and i you cant make a phone call, micayla and jon, for the next 53 minutes, because you are on air. Any Flight Attendant and pilot may not be able to make a phone call for the next 68 hours, because they are flying. There may be a turn around and they may not be able to call on the way back. There could be 1,001 reasons. For this particular profession, Flight Attendants and pilots, they do take the opportunity to make those calls, duties permitting, until the last possible moment. I am not, ill nail my colors on this one. I could be proved wrong by tea time, as ive said many times. I am not in the slightest concerned by this call at the moment. Tom, it is really interested and poignant to point out that the australian Prime Minister, called this area the most difficult area to find things. This is tremendous currents and look at that target area. Thats what they are aiming for. The reason they have all these planes and ships trying to come in here. Where these oceans collide and you get all of this ability to produce storms. You get all the ability to produce storms. You have a great challenge in front of you. You could argue if this plane crashed and if there were debris on top of the water, 14 days ago, by now, it may have moved 1100 miles, because the currents can be so strong down there. So, truly, even if you know where something is, at this moment, it may not be there in an hour. Substantially not there. It could be three miles away. Go down below the water, it is even more complicated. You have all these cross currents and Different Things happening that are quite different than what you have on the surface. And, you have ravines and valleys and all these things. You can go down here with Something Like sidescan sonar, which goes below the water and essentially creates a 3d map of whats down there. It produces images like this that you can then look at and study for details what might be poking out from the bottom and say, is that part of an airplane. As great as this is, it is very focused. You dont just throw this down in a vast swath of ocean. You have to have a clue to lead you down there. The Malaysian Defense minister put out a call for hydrophones, an international, helpme, send hydrophones to the area. What are these devices and how can they help in the search . A hydrophone is what you would use to listen to the pinging of this flight data recorder. They are basically microphones under the water. Thats what they are for. The problem is, you have to know where you are putting it and why you are putting it there. The pinger on these flight data recorders goes about two miles in perfect condition. You have layers of warm water interlaced, it dramatically reduces the effectiveness of the pinger. I am not sure why he wants hydrophones. They are such a specific device. It is like you have lost your keys in your house and you are looking for the keys. The first thing you need is a big look and a big general idea of where they are. This is more like looking through a soda straw and saying im going to look at a little, tiny area. Thats a really hard way to search the house if you dont know where to start. When you look at the size of the area and the enormity of this task, i can understand they want to get all the tools in the tool kit but, like you said, you have to have the right tool at the right time for the right job. We know the pilot had deleted some of the data from the system or there was data deleted from the system. We dont know it was the pilot. Like your old malemails and ot computer files. Bottom line, the fbi is throwing a lot at finding out whats on there. Finding out whats on the duplicate hard drive from the flight sim mu lay tore. A top priority for a team of the fbis top forensics experts. They are working to retrieve those files from the simulator as well as the laptop that police took from their homes. They want too see if there are any clues at all as to what might have happened to flight 370. They are going to look to see data was deleted in a very simple, standard way or whether someone went to Great Lengths intentionally destroy those files to hide them permanently. It is important to note they might not find anything significant here but, of course, because it is the best evidence we have, this he have to check. So, mark, how hard is it to get this information they are looking for. Is it that sim and how long could this process take . It can be that simple. It depends, as pam just pointed out, how the files were deleted. If they were simply deleted using a delete command, you can get them back with a command that says restore. If they were wiped forensically the same way the military does to wipe drives that contain classic information, it becomes really difficult to restore that data. There are forensic tools that can be used to try to get data back. They have been able to restore data from computers that have been in hurricanes and floods and fires and the like but it takes a long time to do it. Can i ask you, if it has been wiped that thoroughly, would that raise a red flag to you, because it seems like a far length to go if you are a casual user of a Flight Simulator. If you are deleting files to make room for other files, you are just going to delete them and they will be overwritten over the course of time, if you forensically wipe data, you are doing it because you dont want that data to be available to somebody else later. More commonly, people are starting to wipe data in nonunusual situations just to protect their own privacy. If they selectively wipe data, particularly these Flight Simulator files, it indicates they did it because they didnt want somebody to see it. On the simulator, im sure as part of their investigation into his home, they are also going to be looking at his computer, websites, that the captain and first officer, who are both under scrutiny, they will look at that as well. Just so we are clear, the Flight Simulator is on a computer. It is just microsoft flight sim mu lay tore that you can go buy off the shelf. It just had a lot of customization to it. It is just an ordinary Computer Program like a Gaming Program that you might find. There are three things you are going to be looking at. One, what websites was this person looking at to get an idea of what their politics were, whether they had been radicalized, things like that, two, their communications, both emails and chat messages, who are they talking to and about what . Number three, in the Flight Simulator program, what flights were they simulating . Where are they simulating themselves flying to, to see if there is anything unusual about that. Those are the three things you are going to look for. Good correction on that. Any sense from the fbi, from your sources, when they expect to get some information they might be able to release. All my sources are saying it is going to take some time because of the large volume of the data in that hard drive. At least a couple of taerabytes. I understand that is a lot of data they have to filter through. What they will find out is the degree of those deletions, whether they were routine or more sophisticated. Then, they will find out exactly what was on that deleted data. It could take several days. We dont have a specific timeline. Pamela, mark, thanks so much for being with us. Interesting. We would all love to know to whom that call was made. You want to know the last person he spoke with before the flight took off. It is easy to imagine if this person was about to undertake some kind of lifechanging adventure, the last person they talked to would probably be a significant choice. Something else that is being discussed today, because of how far this plane may have flown, the search area they are in now, the debris that they are at least looking for, people are wondering, how far can a plane go when it runs out of fuel. This plane may have been flying for a very, very long time, jon. What would have happened . Would it glide to a calm stop or when it runs out of fuel, did it end up crashing into the sea in a violent way . We know that aircrafts glide. We saw that in the miracle on the hudson with sully sullenberger. That could be on the copilot. If a progressive failure of all the Electrical Systems occurred. Thats not unprecedented. In 1996, a value jet out of miami took off. They had a fire on board down in the cargo hold. That in the ntsb report showed a progressive failure of flight controls and electronics. This is not without precedence. It could have happened. If that had happened, the autopilot would have been destroyed also and this would be an airplane with no pilots and no autopilot and it would be out of control. If the pilots had a situation where they ran out of gas, like sullen burg are, they could have collided that aircraft to safety or at least tried to get it to safety. We want to look at what folks on twitter are asking. We thought we would put some questions to you guys. Well ask one question from the viewer. Assuming the transponder and acars were disconnected deliberately, is it possible the recorders would have been switched off zoo. Could they be turned off manually from inside the plane. According to these guys, they had advised me, there is nothing on that airplane they shouldnt be able to turn off if it is an electrical fire. I cannot believe you would be able to turn the flight recorders off. According to these two pilots, you can. If that was the case or they knew, one of the 777 pilots said, you would have to go in the back. I dont fly a 777. It is possible if you know what you are doing or have been trained. You dont have to be a pilot. You have to be somebody thats trained. A 777 pilot i talked to said something similar. We will ask you the second question from twitter. People are wondering about this debris. Someone writes, why not drop the black box ping listener and listen in in that area where they think they spotted that debris . The question is, what harm would that do just to listen in right now . Thats absolutely what they are doing. The problem is that the pinger, this acoustic device, only has a range of about two miles. So it gets too faint to detect. What you have to do is try to drop a series of these and drag along a listening device through the water, try to make a grid. You need to get within a certain distance of this pinger in order for it to work. Here is the problem. This water, in some places, is more than two miles deep. Nowhere on the surface will you be able to detect this pinger. If you get a more advanced listening device, that might increase your range. Huge stretch of ocean. No real clear idea where the wreckage is. If there is wreckage, it is a big problem. The cargo manifest is something that investigators will be looking at as part of their on going investigation. Malaysia airlines talked about the fact that there was a small collection of lithium eye on batteries. We talked again earlier about the possibility they could have caught fire. It happens, although rare. The indications would be that if that had happened, a pilot would have a chance to put out a may day or call or at least alert that there was a problem on board. We have an aircraft that takes off reported at 12 55 a. M. At 1 07, 12 minutes later, it diverted from its path. 12 minutes later, it is off about 90 minutes later. When he is handed off to control, he says, okay, good night. If they had diverted because of the fire, he would have said, we are diverted, going to this airfield, descending at flight level 350. On and on and on. I do not think, while anything is possible, i dont believe thats what happened in this case at all. Can i add something about lithium ion. Sure. We have heard about fires and smoldering involved in lithium eye on batteries with 787s. We have heard about laptops spontaneously come busting. Those are batteries hooked into a device. What we are talking about here is stored batteries in a box. Not to say it is impossible but when we hear about that. Its a different scenario. Its a different scenario. We are so pleased you could join us to talk about it. We know these families have gone on an emotional roller coaster for the past two weeks, still, no concrete information that they can be given. Communication was sketchy at the beginning to begin with. I dont know that there is a right way to tell these people how to handle this. What kind of advice do you give someone that is going through this kind of grief . It is traumatic. You are right. There isnt one right way to handle trauma. It does depend on that persons individual psychology, whether it is better for them to be able to talk about it. Some people would really benefit from counseling in this situation. If they would provide some people in these rooms with them, that they could go and talk to or having meetings with so they can talk about how they are feeling or how symptomatic they are and get some help. One size doesnt fit all. One size doesnt fit all. We know some people really dont do wellbeing asked to talk. They just need support of families and friends. It can make you feel worse. Some people do. You shouldnt force them to talk. The way it is handled, with people being dragged from the room and so on, is only amplifying the trauma. That, obviously, no place for that. The families, a lot of them feel like today was the first chance they had, to get the briefings they had to ask the question they want. We were hearing some of the request questions they were asking. There was someone who asked the malaysian officials, do you have any proof that flight 370 was shot down by some countrys military. What struck me about this, it made me think, what must these families be going through. That sounds like a fairly outlandish theory right there. What must they be going through to be thinking those things. When there isnt any information, you are left with the vacuum of your fantasy you start filling in the blanks, dont you . Given what people watch on television and given what happens in real life, imitating real life. People are left to go to their worst place and, in fact, to some degree, it is a better place for them. The idea there is somebody to hold responsible, somebody to blame, somebody they can ask, that there is somebody that they can stop or some way of rescuing their loved one. That is the fantasy that people want to hold on to. Thats why they are going to all these strange places. It would be better for them to some degree if they would not watch everything thats said. Thats the hard part because they are waiting for any outlet to give them a grain of information. What they are doing, it is like a compulsive thing. You want the hope to diminish your ang sgrooxiety. You have this hope to keep looking. You cant turn away from the accident. Every time they do, they are not getting an answer. It only churns them up more. I am sure some of these people are terribly symptomatic and need some help. After, come what may, if there is an after, that thats when the people are going to need more help. When you go to the store and you buy the new iphone and you turn it on and you left your password in, all your stuff comes back. Now, granted, we are in large metropolitan area, we have excellent cell coverage. So thats a different story. But i get that were talking about 10,000 aircraft at a time flying over. But were also talking about voice and data, which is very not a lot of bandwidth would be required. And if you can have wifi on board, tv signals to these airplanes, you could very easily be uploading this information at the same time. It occurred to me too it would then also targetel exactly where the search area is. Absolutely. Then you would know the point of last contact. Boom. You could see from the data that they, okay, this was their last gps position. Lets go there. You would have basically the same information thats on the black box. Which for some of these older airlines are still magnetic tape. Is it surprising to you that technology has not really evolved . It is, and it isnt. Because when you look at the Airline Industry as a whole, they tend to not fix things until it absolutely has to be fixed. We saw this with air france. They looked for that black box for two years, and that was well beyond the 30 days of ping they got. And they said then it should at least go for 90 days. If anything was turned off on this plane either deliberately or through some kind of big disaster, presumably the cloud servicing device could be turned off also. So perhaps the data would be limited and could have been sent up there, is there any security concerns for that . Look, if it data is constantly being transferred, you know, isnt that an opportunity for hackers to break in . I mean, it is from a oneway communication standpoint in that hackers would be able to figure out where an airplane is, and everything coming out of the airplane. Could you offer limited amounts of data that would come out, so that it wouldnt be the full black box. Wouldnt be something you could plug into a simulator so you could say do this. It could be simple waypoint or gps coordinates. There are free apps that tell you where airplanes are in the world within three or four feet. You can track if you have an incoming flight, a guest arriving, see where its progress is. And i get the privacy concerns in terms of i dont want my conversation in the cockpit being constantly transmitted. But again, this is something theyre only going to really need to turn to in the event of an incident or in this case a missing aircraft. Watching how people react to the story online, theorys flying around quickly. The idea that these electronics could have been compromised, hacked, if you will. Right. From a remote location. Again, it goes back to you know, these systems that fly these airplanes in the 777 is all fly by wire, computer controlled. But the systems are proprietary and not connected, not on the wifi, so if youre on your laptop, youre not going to see a shared computer thats the cockpit computer. It would be very difficult to do so that. And it would also require, again, a constant connection to the ground somewhere, which if youre flying over 90 of the earth so water, you need to have some sort of satellite connection someone would notice on board.
