In the west and 8 00 a. M. In the east. We are getting confirmation all passengers are being cleared of any role in the incident with flight 370. Coming from malaysia inspector general. He reveals that the criminal probe has focused on hijacking, sabotage, personal and psychological issues. His investigators are saying all the passengers have been cleared. Were also learning the criminal investigation into the planes disappearance started on march 16th. Thats about eight days after the flight from kuala lumpur to beijing vanished with 239 people on board. That criminal investigation, despite the fact that all the passengers have been cleared, is continuing. New developments in the search for the wreckage. Authorities have again shifted that search zone. This time, they have moved it eastward. Closer to the australian coast. Lets get more on the criminal investigation. Nic robertson joins us from kuala lumpur. Nick, we see the passengers have been cleared of any criminal involvement in the flights disappearance. What about suspicious of the crew . Where does that leave things . Well, 12 crew members on board including the captain and the first officer and the investigations continuing according to the director general and the police. He said that they had talked to the wife and daughter. The police chief denied that and said it wasnt the case. The Investigation Continues to focus on all the members of the crew, all 12. The captain said they had taken 170 statements so far. He made it very clear there is a long way to go on this investigation. Investigating things like the cargo, who loaded it. Investigating things like, who prepared the food on board, who was responsible for that. Was there any tampering with the food, looking at ground crew as well. With he do know from officials, it is obvious. They say someone on board the plane took control of the plane and was therefore taking it. This is whats leading to this criminal investigation, micayla. The food aspect really caught my attention. Seems like they are grasping for things there. Malaysian authorities met with families of the chinese passengers. This has been a contentious relationship for weeks. How did it go today . Reporter a little less contentious. The families came out and said, weve made some progress. The head of Civil Aviation was there. The families were showed data thats been discovered along the way explained how the data is being used in the investigation. These sorts of things we were told that the process was very complicated. The families have complained they havent been able to ask questions. Today, they were able to ask some questions. The head of the Civil Aviation said that the families have been the officials have been able to answer all those questions. The families came out afterwards and said, yes, progress. Some questions answered but not all. Clearly, this he immediate to know a lot more these days. John, micayla. Nic robertson, following the investigation in kuala lumpur, thanks very much. More on the missing plane. In chile, sirens going off. The ground shaking. People running out of buildings. This as a huge 8. 2 magnitude earthquake rattled the coastal city of iquique. At this point, six people are dead. Thousands were forced to evacuate. Rescue efforts get underway. More bodies may be found. The Senior Vice President is in santiago, chile. Thats where it stands right now. Rolando, they know they are six dead but they anticipate that the death toll could climb here. Reporter thats absolutely right, micayla. The situation is that the two main cities are fine in general. There is damage but most of the buildings in those areas, because they are bigger and more modern, have a lot of earth quakes in the building. The problems that have occurred is between the two cities are a series of small towns and villages. They dont have any earthquake proofing. Two of those areas are cut off and they are try tog get that. We will have more on that in a couple of hours when the teams are able to get into the reasonable yregion. About an hour ago, the president of chile arrived in the area. We had a cnn chile anchor on the plane. The anchor told me the president was calm, outwardly calm at least, waiting to see what the situation was. When she landed, one of the first people she met with was the daughter of one of the six people that died. They spent a private moment together. She hugged her, shared a few words. She was visibly emotional, as you would expect under that kind of situation. Then, she continued her tour to see what the situation was in the entire area. Also, this morning, as you know, the pope is from argentina. The pope said he was profoundly saddened and praying for god to give eternal rest for those people who died. He was also asking for the loving protection of the patron saint of chile. Rolando santos reporting on the latest conditions in chile. We will be watching and waiting to hear more information. At this hour, senators on capitol hill with more tough questioning for General Motors ceo, mary barra and a Highway Safety official. Barra, the ceo of g. M. , asked to explain why her company dragged her feet for years replacing faulty ignition switches. The problem would cut off the engine and deactivate the air bags and power steering and brakes. It all comes too late for 13 people whose deaths are being blamed on the problem. Senator Claire Mccaskill called g. M. Out for what she called a culture of coverup. Even under the new g. M. , the company waited nine months to take action after being confronted with specific evidence of this egregious violation of public trust. This just in. The Supreme Court has removed ban on individual amounts donors can make to campaigns. This could have an Immediate Impact on congressional midterms. They did not change limits you can give to an individual campaign. What this ruling affects is the total amount you can give spread out over all campaigns. We have some sad news. The confirmed death toll on the Washington State mudslide has now risen. That number is now 29. Again, they are still searching and that number could go up for sure. The conditions there simply not optimal. They say the water and the floodwater has receded so they are able to get to some of the areas. Some three stories of mud and debris they are having to get through in some areas. Back to the search for flight 370. 26 days into the search and the search area shifted again. This time, slightly eastward. Malaysia airlines is stepping up security in the cockpit area, changing some of their rules. All 227 passengers as we just reported, malaysian officials have ruled them out as suspects. Overnight, several relatives of the planes chinese passengers met with malaysian officials. Some are still clinging to hope. I have to say that it may be 1 or even less than 1 but it was very little but i think there is still hope. A Family Member of one of the people on board the plane, steve wang. Joining us mary schiavo and jeff wise. Good to have you both. Mary, why dont we start with you. Lets talk about these new rules. Should we be reading into this this . Do they feel they have to be reactive to something specific to you . Are you talking to me . Im sorry. Mary, yes. Well, they are being reactive. They are being reactive to the situation. The new rules are good rules. They are rules that the us airlines has followed these. Each has implemented their own variation of the rules. They were guidelines and suggestions and directives after september 11, 2001. They are common sense rules. They add to security. In some ways, Malaysian Air is playing catchup with the other airlines that have these kind of rules in the cockpit already. One other thing we learned, malaysian officials saying they are investigating everything on board that flight including the food. They say they have to investigate every little thing. It sounds like they have nothing. They are just grasping at this point. Thats what has characterized this from the beginning. There has been no hard evidence of any kind in terms of motive, whose really behind this, why . Where they went. Yes, i agree. Once you start looking at the cutlery and what color the close were that people were wearing, they are grasping for straws. Any potential lead they will turn over that rock to see what is under it. Part of the frustration too is that this would be things that you would think would have been looked at early on in the investigation. You have been involved in countless investigations like this. Another piece of news we talked about right here is the fact that malaysian authorities ruled out all of the passengers. Yet, they are still talking about it being a criminal investigation that loops us around to territory we have looked at before and seems to point at the pilots once again. Early on, we had heard on the flight or on the air Traffic Control transcript and the recordings that they said it was normal. Pilot, which is perfectly the pilot not flying usually that handles the communications and now this week, they said they are not sure who was speaking. Again, if youre doing a criminal investigation, identifying the voices on the tapes as to who is in the cockpit is pretty basic and you do it right away by listening and having others that know them. It does seem like they pronounce it. It is a criminal investigation. Probably because they dont have anything else. Now, they are searching for whatever they can find to explain this. I just dont think they have anything. They rule out the passengers and make a sweeping Statement Like that and the same sweeping statement they think it is a criminal activity likely in the cockpit. It seems to me they make these broad sweeping statements and dont give us very much to back it up. Right. Thats a problem for investigations. Usually, you dont issue the conclusions. You can have daily briefings a tell the families of the passengers whats going on. It is really risky in any investigation to make a conclusion like that for two reasons. One, it can often be wrong. What happens when investigators make preliminary conclusions and announce them, there are several psychological effects that kick in, not the least of which you try to make your evidence fit your conclusion. They might be having that problem right now. There are a number of things you have to guard against in an investigation so that does not happen. It seems like it may be happening. They are trying to make the facts fit the conclusion that it is a criminal act. It may very well be a criminal act. There is just no evidence. Barry schiavo and jeff wise. There are many suggestions from a lot of places about what they could do, from putting cameras in the cockpit to streaming flight data in real time. If 100,000 flights around the world every day, if they are all streaming all the data from all the way from pushback to the destination, we may just end up swamped in an ocean of data. Once again with us, cnn aviation analyst, mary schiavo and jeff wise. Why cant we track every plane in the sky . Is this just a question about dollars and cents the airlines would be forced to spend . We could do it. We are already swamped in a sea of data. This would multiply it a lot. We have tiny, minuscule, microscopic amounts of data. We have seven pings. We have been able to reconstruct a lot, not everything but a lot about where this plane went. It is like a fraction of a period in your text message you are sending. It wouldnt require that much. The technology exists. Its available. Dont forget the problem. There was a lot of technology tracking this airplane. It was turned off. Thats a major difference. We are calling for more and more tracking, more and more identification on the one hand. It seems to me all the press and p. R. And political debate have been about that but we are sklg for something more intrusive. A lot of pilots dont want to be surveyed all the time and dont want cameras and microphones that are running 247, thats why the cockpit voice recorder is limited to two hours. What problem will it solve is the question. Every case has to be involved on its own merits. This is a unique case. Never lose sight of the fact that nothing like this has ever happened before. We dont know what happened here. Mary, i want to shift gears and quote chejeff. He has said we have gone from thinking they are going to spot debris. We would all be quite surprised at this point if one of those planes went back. It has been too many days of nothing here. You have been through these investigations. When do you wind down. How do you wind down if you are just not having success. At some point, it will wind down. It will keep it up until the black box is supposed to end. The weather will Start Playing and wrecking havoc as well. At some point, they are going to have to call it off. It is the intensity in keeping up the search and endless search. We are regrouping. We are going to research what we have thus far and we are going to look at the data and see where we can go from here. That will be the signal they are going to sift through what they have and then maybe when the weather clears up again. It would mean stopping through the winter, they will start again like they did with air france 447. I dont think that means all is lost. We should also point out this is a very expensive multinational proposition to conduct this search. The u. S. Alone has pledged some 4 million. It was confirmed last friday that her air bags did not deploy and it was a front impact. This happened years ago but it took until last week for you to come to this conclusion. Im a shame to say. I have been weak through this. I havent sat in the car or read a report but the story has been haunting me for two weeks. I told my children, maybe im crazy but this story wont stop. I made one phone call to my brother, who did see the car. I asked him, if the air bags had deployed. He said, he does not remember seeing them. First of all, you are not weak. Gif given your expertise, your team helped map the area where it went down. Are you confident in whats going on here . I am hopeful that they have some information we dont know thats guiding the movements of the search areas. It could be possible they have some other detection of the aircraft that it was a hint they should be looking elsewhere. It also is possible that they just havent found anything in the existing search area and they are kind of moving around to maybe get lucky at this point. I hate to use those words. 26 days in, you are hoping not for luck. I think it is fascinating. In the absence of what we dont know, it seems like they are hoping for luck. Thats a very precarious place to be this far. They seem to think they are in the right area but they are moving it around. It is kind of like they are reaching out and grabbing for stuff. If they would find one piece, we would be on op top of it. The tower the towed pinger locator will be on site this weekend. Time is running out for the pings from the black boxes. There is willsalso a british sut will be reaching out. What can they do without debris on the surface . Very, very little. Even if we had debris on the surface. It would be some hundreds of miles from potential impact site. So they need to be practically on top of any wreckage on the sea floor, which is not going to be related to wreckage on the sea surface in order to get ahead. You would have to be a desperate optimist to claim this is going to be any good. The chances of having it out there are a lot better than having it tied up on a wharf in perth. We know these situations are very different. Colleen, to that end, we know in that situation, the pinger ran out of batteries as well. What if we get past that point . We are now getting really close to the life of the batteries expiring. What do we do then . Where do we go . That makes the search that much harder. The pingers in the air france search never operated. Both were damaged. We only recovered one and determined it watts damaged prior to the aircraft crashing. The other one we never found. We know we can find an aircraft without pingers. Without a tight area and no pingers and no debris, we are really up the creek here. What i think they intend to do is undertake an underwater search even then. So it is going to be a very long protracted search. I liken it to trying to cut the grass in a football field the size of the state of utah with a push mower. They are going to have to take the underwater vehicles with side scan sonars and sweep the lawn. We did a rough calculations of five years of continuing searching. Without breaks for winter and weather. Let me get your take on this quickly. What would you be doing . You have a vast amount of searching under the sea. What would you do at this point . Two things. The first is exactly what they are doing at the moment which is retro navigating back on the data they got from the hand shakes. The shift in the search area, i dont know why it is moved. I presume it is because they have reanalyzed some of the data they had earlier. Thats been done as a constant process. They are allowing for the movement of ocean current and wind, which is pushing them down wind, which is a good thing to do. The second thing i would be doing is accepting that this is going to be a long search. It is going to be a vast area. I would probably move away now from auvs, unmanned vehicles and go with towed ray sonar. They have far better range. Rob and colleen, we appreciate both of you, above the water, below the water. We want to go back to your questions. With us, mary schiavo and jeff wise. Why cannot an Aircraft Carrier stay in search zone with helicopters on deck instead of jets . Thats a good question. You would be able to move out all your assets and be there on location. It is a matter of cost. You are not just moving a ship but a whole fleet of support vessels as well, submarines and destroyers. It is not op t optimized for se. There are tense things going on elsewhere in the world. I am surprised there havent been helicopters out there. Some of the destroyers, you can put a helicopter on just about any ship. Helicopters have a shorter range than fixed aircraft. They are taking part. Mary, some people are wondering about the pilots and the crews. What can their families expect to receive as compensation . You work as a lawyer for victims families here. What about that . Well, depends on what ultimately is determined to be the cause. If there is no cause ever found, then they will receive the compensation from the airlines, such as workers comp or whatever the Airline Compensation is. If the cause were to be determined to be something other than the carrier, such as a mechanical or some outside force or, dont forget, the shipper and the batteries. If the shipper would be liable, that would be like value jet. The pilots and flight attendants, the crew can recover just like anyone else against those entities. All right. To chile now, where people were sitting eating dinner, maybe watching tv, relaxing at home last night, when a massive earthquake rattled the coastal area of that nation. Yeah, triggered landslides, fires, power outages. At least six people now dead. That number could rise as they search some of the more remote areas. U. S. Geological survey research seismologi seismologist gavin hayes on the phone from colorado. We were talking about earthquakes a few days ago, because some have started to hit california again, magnitude 5plus. People see the earthquakes in california, they see the earthquakes in chile. I know these are on different fault lines, but is there any connection here . We dont think so. The two faults in question are really too far apart for there to be any connection between the two. Actually, the earthquake in chile comes at a time of relative seismic quakes globally for large quakes. There hasnt been one for three or four months. We heard from one of the seismologists on cnn talk about the fact that this area has seismic activity, but that they were expecting a much bigger one. I think thats shocking to people, when they hear the number 8. 2. How much bigger can you get . And is that something that is anticipated in the near future for chile . Chile has a history of very large earthquakes along its coastline. They have had earthquakes as large as 9. 5, which is the largest we have on historical record in southern chile. This part of northern chile has experienced earthquakes of about 8 in history, which i think is about eight times larger than this 8. 2. So there is a possibility a larger could occur. Its difficult to tell at this stage what we might expect, based on what has happened last night. So 8. 2. That is a big quake. And when it first struck overnight, there were fears of a tsunami that could hit. There were places where waves as big as seven feet did strike. What determines if its worse than that. What makes it a bigger tsunami versus a smaller one, and how far away are you at risk . Could the United States be at risk for what happens off the coast of chile . Really, what we need for a big tsunami would be a lot of slip very shallow in this zone. And i think what were seeing in our analysis of this event, it seems that most of the large slip in this magnitude 8. 2 was deeper on that subduction zone. Perhaps 30 to 40 kilometers deep, rather than, you know, 10 to 20 kilometers, like we saw very large slip in japan. And so when you get that very shallow, large slip, you get a big tsunami. In terms of the hazard for the coast around the pacific, yes, there would be one from a large earthquake in chile, as we saw in 1960 and again in 2010. The thing that certainly saved lives here, we know there are six people that have been reported dead. There is a concern there will be more. But one of the reasons that it wasnt more catastrophic is the fact it was off coast and didnt hit a populated zone. Tiger is really at this point in my mind playing for one thing and that is the Jack Nicklaus record of 18 majors. But he has been stuck at 14 since 2008. So to me, it feels like this dream, laura, is slipping away. Yeah. No, john, i wouldnt necessarily say it is slipping away. However, i would say right now there is a bit of a minor setback for tiger woods. But toyihis is a surgery thats going to protect the longevity of his career. This is something thats going to allow him to play for many, many more years in the future. Its not a quick fix solution. Its something that allows him to keep going and keep reaching the biggest number in golf, possibly in sports, which is that major record thats held by Jack Nicklaus. 18 is that major number. However, i want to do a bit of a comparative analysis here. Both at the age that tiger woods is now and the same age that Jack Nicklaus was, 38 years old, when they had both won 14 majors, they had both played 64 major championships. So we are level. We are level right now. Tiger woods is on par. Now, of course, when i speak about a bit of a setback, he wont be playing at the masters. So that wont be his 65th. Jack nicklaus won his 15th major in his 67th major championship that he played in. So now were going to see as tiger woods is fighting back from this surgery, which could be about three months to get him fully back out there, will he be able to perform later on in the summer, possibly the open championship. Possibly the pga championship. But i think that its still a very, very attainable goal for tiger woods. You know, i was thinking about this when we were talking in the office about tiger. You know, a lot has been made about the comeback and the image rehabilitation he underwent. How do you think the history books, when theyre written, will look back at tiger woods career and talk about the moment that cost him his dream . I think that when we look back at tiger woods, all those books will say that he was the greatest player thats ever played the game. He is someone that had a big hiccup, lets say, in his personal life. But was able to fight through it. And was able to hit a record, not just conquer sam sneads record of pga tour victories, but beat jacks record. I would say that tiger woods possibly has 40 more majors left in him, about ten years, lets say. And that would take him until hes 48 years old. And i think if tiger woods can stay healthy, he will be able to had hit that goal. We have to think about tiger woods at augusta, and can play very, very well at. A player like fred couples, hes in his early 50s and he has been in contention for the past three or four years at augusta. So there is a lot of time left for tiger. There is time. Everyone who covers golf agrees with you, that tiger still has a chance. Im not so sure. I just dont see it. I see too many other good young golfers out there. But laura, come back on our show.
