Well, we just actually came back from the hospital, but it was a very chaotic scene there. Dozens of people running around trying to get the injured into the hospital. We saw people on beds, on stretchers, laid out basically in any available space. All the rooms were full. We are talking to paramedics there saying that a dozen people have been killed. Now with our own eyes when we went to the morgue we saw eight people dead, a lot of families there searching for their loved ones, trying to find out their situation, but when we were Walking Around looking at a lot of people were women and children who were also injured in this attack. Now were not quite sure at this moment who is responsible. Now the Israeli Military is saying that it was a hamasfired rocket that landed at this school. Now hamas is denying that saying that this was a strike from the israelis. Now we dont know quite yet who is responsible, but the International Red cross has said that this incident, whatever it was, there was innocent people that were just too close to the action and they have said that this just isnt right, that this sort of thing shouldnt happen. Ive been to these schools before. Ive seen them. These are areas where people try to go to find shelter from the violence here in the gaza strip. Theres over 140,000 people all over gaza taking shelter in these sort of schools. These are areas where they think they believe that they will be safe. Now, the u. N. Has come out and said that twice today, that they tried to coordinate with the Israeli Military to move people from the school in question to get them out of there, but they said both times their requests were denied. Now israel has accused hamas of using International Recognized symbols, whether its medics, ambulan ambulances, as well as journalists, accusing hamas of using them as shields to move about and saying that this sort of thing, blaming them, blaming hamas for when these sorts of incidents happen. Well, the sorry, the u. N. Has found weapons at u. N. Run schools twice, two incidents where the u. N. Has found rockets stored at u. N. Schools. Right now, though, when it comeses to this school, we are unsure who is responsible for this strike. And, of course, this just points to the urgency and the need for some sort of ceasefire. Again, we dont know where this attack came from. We know there are dead among those casualties. Ian lee, thanks to you. Thanks for getting the latest information from the hospital for us. Israel has responded to that a. We want to get the very latest on that side of the story. Our wolf blitzer joins us now from jerusalem. What are you hearing from the Israeli Military, wolf . Well, were about to speak to the spokesman for the Israeli Military. If ian lee is still there, a quick question, has the United Nations, the people there on the scene, have they directly accused israel of launching this rocket or this shell or this artillery fire, whatever it was . Do they blame israel or are they leaving it open for now . What is the u. N. Position . Well, wolf, the u. N. Position right now is open. They have yet to place blame on this really both sides that are blaming the other. Hamas is blaming the israelis, israelis blaming hamas and the u. N. Right now is trying to get an idea of exactly what happened. When we visited that school, it was empty. There werent anyone there. They were all rushed to the area hospitals, but right now its a very fluid situation as they try to figure out who is responsible for this. All right. Ian lee, stand by. Were going to get back to you, michaela, we have the spokesman for the idf, Israel Defense fund, Lieutenant Colonel peter learner is with us. You put out a statement, you raised the possibility, you dont know for sure, but you raised the possibility it was a hamas rocket that actually blew up this United Nations school. What evidence do you have for that . We have our sensors which have indications that at least on two or three different occasions in the course of the afternoon, rockets launched from within gaza landed within beit hanoun. Im not saying thats the situation, we are looking into it. The idf does not target u. N. Facilities. We knew there were rockets in u. N. Schools. We are having an ongoing working relationship with the United Nations operating within the context of the conflict and beyond. We do not target u. N. We actually appeal to them three days ago together with the red cross to evacuates this area because we understand that there is extensive Hamas Terrorists infrastructure in this area and they will abuse it and they will put the people at risk like they have been doing over the last five or six days in the Ground Forces activities. They go to no end in order to carry out their attacks. They will utilize ambulances, they will utilize journalists, they will utilize schools, they will utilize everything that is at their hand in order to carry out attacks and to strike the idf in its ground operation to solve this problem of tunnels, rockets. I would say, i will comment on the pictures that are coming out of beit hanoun, they are horrific this is not us. We do not intentionally target civilians. There is, of course, in the heat of battle in that area where there is extensive fighting going on, there is an option that there could be errant fire. We do not target the u. N. You heard ian lee, our reporter, excellent reporter on the scene, spoke with the u. N. And they said they twice tried to give the idf the coordinates of the school. They did not get any response from you. What do you say . We know that they are utilizing the schools to as shelters for people. We have that ongoing relationship with the u. N. And it is an open say hotline during the course of the conflict. We actually appealed to them three days ago not to hold people in this school, not to hold people in this area, that they should move them to other areas in central gaza, but they had refrained to do so. I just before i came on line, just before i came in to here, i got an update that 15 minutes before this unfortunate incident, they informed us they were bringing busses in order to evacuate the people. This is tragic, but we do not target civilians. They say they were trying to alert you, give you coordinates and you didnt respond. You said you youre saying you did respond, is that what youre saying . Im saying weve been trying for three days to urge them to evacuate the people from this location. For three days, we had met a brick wall of saying that we cant do so. We cant evacuate them. We cant force them out of this area, despite our urging, but today, earlier, just before this unfortunate incident, we received confirmation they are sending busses to evacuate the people. Youre investigating, the u. N. Will investigate, hamas will investigate who is responsible for blowing up this u. N. School. When do you think the israeli report will be complete . We will take some time. We have to see whats going on. The battles are ongoing. Lieutenant colonel peter learner, there you have it. The israeli response. Hamas denies it was one of its rockets that landed in the beit hanoun area, blowing up the school, killing so many people and injuring scores of others. Whoever was responsible, its an awful, awful incident and it underscores as you correctly point out the need for a ceasefire as quickly as possible. Wolf, before i lose you, let me ask you, is there any sense the how tenant colonel there speaking of the fact they urged these people to evacuate to central gaza, do you get a sense there are sufficient shelters in that area for innocent people to go . I get a sense that gaza is so crowded, about 1. 8 Million People in a small area, the strip is only 26 miles long, im not sure there are any really secure areas in gaza right now. People can leave the north go to the central part of gaza, go to the southern part of gaza but the whole place is pretty insecure right now. Very, very dangerous. And it underscores as i say, they got to stop this. They got to stop this as quickly as possible and lets hope john kerry and other International Diplomats can come up with a ceasefire. They are, by the way, i must say, im hearing some encouraging words, making a little progress, perhaps on this twophased ceasefire start off with an immediate cessation and then immediately deal with some of the humanitarian issue, some of the demands that hamas is making, certainly the demands the israelis making. Theyre making some progress. Lets hope they can resolve this very quickly so there are no more of these horrible incidents weve seen at this u. N. School at beit hanoun in gaza. Eight dead we know of. Youre right, wolf, shortterm fix versus longterm solutions both need to be addressed immediately. We appreciate it. Great reporting on the ground. The national day of mourning may be over in the netherlands but the grief and outrage could last for generations. Lets give you the latest details at this hour. A week after Malaysia Airlines flight 17 went down, 74 more coffins arriving in the netherlands from ukraine. Dutch Officials Say identifying those remains, though, could take months. The operation to transfer them should be finished by tomorrow. Barring any delays. International monitors we know are back on scene, what is being called the biggest crime scene in the world right now. Russia and ukraine still blaming each other for firing the missile that brought down the jet and killed the 29 8 souls on board. Today the European Union will talk tougher sanctions against russia. For the first time the eu might decide to punish russian companies. So those are the cold hard facts. We want to turn to the personal stories, the loss of 298 lives. Their families changed forever. The toll its taking on their loved ones. Chris cuomo just got back from amsterdam and first of all, i think we all report appreciated the reporting you did because not only were you letting us know about the scene there at ukraine, the crash site, well talk about that in a second, but when you got to amsterdam, you really made it vital for us to understand the impact this was having on so many of the families there. Cnn made a decision to follow the bodies and to take up the angle of coverage of the victims very early on in the story. I think our bosses who have been through a lot of these, were worried that the victims would get caught up in the politics. We could almost see that coming considering how rife with conflict the whole situation has been. I might not have guessed that so early on but thats the benefit of being here, right, they covered so many different situations around the world that literally you build up an instinct. We were paying attention to that right away and obviously the move would be to go from ukraine to holland, the netherlands, amsterdam, for the bodies and i was very surprised and impressed, i think the whole team was, with how that country came together so quickly. They havent had that kind of disaster. Its a small nation. Weve been hearing reports about the fact that everybody there, knows somebody who was affected by this. Do you get a sense that theres rage as well . Because often times following grief comes that anger and the desire to make somebody pay. Did you get a sense of any of that. It would be even more justifiable here than usual because even if you played out the scenario where this is a hostile air space and this plane was collateral damage, the abuse of the situation after the crash, that would be unforgivable even on top of an accident. Okay. So they had every right for rage. I think there was such a maturity among the dutch in terms of dealing with this that had two parts. One, i think a deep sense of humanity. The dutch, everyone kept saying theyre not known for outward displays. I dont know how you jen rise a whole group generalize a he whole group. We do that though. I think there was an immediate rush of consolation of the victim, take care of that emotion. Yeah. As a nation you sort of wrap them up in our collective arms. And the knowledge that theres very little chance that given the complete incompetence of the militants overlooking this scene, or not overlooking it i would submit, youre going to have all the bodies. You need a relationship with these people to get access. I think theres a real maturity on the part of dutch leadership to make thur they give themselves the best chance to get closure for their families. Preeminent diplomacy. You make a good point. This is stark contrast to the scene you first arrived at. I watched you really struggle with trying to understand how the scene could be so disrupted and yet, you felt a very real threat and very real danger on the scene in those first hours that you were there . It is a real threat. I mean, the men and women there covering this right now, putting themselves in harms way and great personal toll to get the story out and very often we debate, should you go, not go, you and i had that discussion when were talking about my plans to go places, but i have to tell you in this situation, i think if the media hadnt been there and cnn was just one of countless media organizations, you would not have had anybody preserving the scene and you wouldnt have anybody protecting against whatever instincts these militia men had. You know, the deceased who are there, ive never seen anything like that. Obviously we talk a lot about this stuff off camera, but if you and i are warring with each other, theres an inherent disrespect for each other and the dead of each other, ive never seen such disrespect in a situation where there was no animosity involved. These people had no part of this conflict. The selfappointed Prime Minister said a federal International Monitoring agency told him to ignore the bodies and do that. Thats just not true. We checked with the organization. This was just a funk of pure disrespect. The one thing i love you also made a point of showing the villagers there did what they could to try to give some dignity to this tragedy and try to pay some respects. They held a very Solemn Service there. They did. And that was a beautiful thing as well. Im glad you were there. And dangerous. Very dangerous. Because it wasnt welcomed by the militia there. It was seen as sign of disrespect of their control. Im glad you were there to tell the story but glad to see you back here. You need to be safe with your family as well. Thanks for sharing this with us. Thank you. Short break ahead at this shower. Another devastating plane disaster as an al algerie flight vanishes from the radar. A look at what happened. So many questions. Well be back. I dont just make things for a living i take pride in them. So when my moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis was also on display, id had it. I finally had a serious talk with my dermatologist. This time, he prescribed humiraadalimumab. Humira helps to clear the surface of my skin by actually working inside my body. In Clinical Trials, most adults with moderate to Severe Plaque Psoriasis saw 75 skin clearance. And the majority of people were clear or almost clear in just 4 months. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal events, such as infections, lymphoma, or other types of cancer have happened. Blood, liver and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening Heart Failure have occurred. Before starting humira, your doctor should test you for tb. Ask your doctor if you live in or have been to a region where certain fungal infections are common. Tell your doctor if you have had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have symptoms such as fever, fatigue, cough, or sores. You should not start humira if you have any kind of infection. At this hour more people in more nations around the world will be mourning the loss of their loved ones once again in a plane disaster. This time in africa. Just a short time ago, al algerie tweeted that flight 5017 apparently crashed. Al algerie is algerias main carrier. It was an md83 jet. It left the west african nation of burkina faso, headed to algiers. In about an hour some 50 minutes into the flight, the plane simply disappeared from radar. The airline believes the airplane went down in eastern mali. 116 people on board from multiple countries. The state department does not believe any americans were on board. However airport officials in burkina faso say the daughter of cuban president raul castro, the niece of fidel castro, was one of them. They posted that on the airports Facebook Page. We have not received confirmation or word, any reports out of havana, were pursuing that and bring that to you. Want to bring in our safety analyst david soucie, and chad myers is here. I want to talk to you, Indra Peterson our meteorologist this morning was giving us an idea whether in that region of the globe it looks as though weather could have been a factor. What do we know what could have been going on there weather wise . A factor maybe. David will say it wont bring down an airplane. An area you talk about the itcz, the zone that creates the hurricanes that eventually get to america. Look at all the weather all wait through here. This is the convergence tropical zone that gets into the atlantic that goes all the way to the west and into our airports, into our shores, into our hurricane zone. Theres burkina faso, the storm it tried to fly around on it ways to here. U g85 one thing doesnt bring an airplane well, know the pilot alerted air traffic they wanted to reroute a little bit because of weather. Thats the one thing we do know. We do know it was the air traffic that asked him to divert. Okay. So he made this diversion because of weather. That doesnt mean it was bad enough it would have brought the aircraft down en route, weather has never really sometimes has but only rarely does it cause a problem with an aircraft to cause it to go down. You are weather. What are other factors. Its another thing to consider for the pilot. In every accident site theres more than one cause. Everything has a different cause and all culminated. Five or six things that happen. When weather occurs and changes the routine, thats when it makes you vulnerable to other types of things as well. Like . For example, reacting to a depressurization, while you have a while youre dealing with weather, you have to worry about the weather below. Wouldnt we have heard a call from the plane . Thats what makes this such a mystery right now, is why was there not a call . Why wasnt there the last thing we heard was we are going to divert. Thats all they knew. Md83, give us an idea about this airplane. If you were to say its a good reliable tractor and has been for the faa its been there forever within the aviation industry. Its one of the backbone airplanes that the entire aviation industry. It has a very good Safety Record and no reason to suspect it was mechanical at this point necessarily. David soucie, the latest report the plane went down in mali, left burkina faso, 116 souls on board, their fate we know not of at this hour. We want to say thank you to you and our thanks to chad. Good to have you back with us at this hour. Just a matter of days, hundreds more killed in the middle east. The majority innocent civilians. Multiple deaths hours ago, in fact, after shells struck a u. N. Run school that was serving as a shelter in gaza. And a commercial airliner shot down over ukraine. 298 innocent lives lost. Their remains finally being returned to their loved ones. These crises are not just challenging World Leaders and diplomats but theyre also impacting the international community. Joining us to discuss this is u. S. Former u. S. Am bass doctor to the United Nations bill richardson. Sir, its very much a pleasure to have you back with me today. Thank you. Its difficult in light of all the conversations that we need to be having right now. And i have to say, we know the very delicate nature of foreign leelati relations, finding solutions to all these cry ses very difficult but very critical. Its essential. Again the United States is a key player, but we cant just do it alone. In the middle east, we have to get egypt, which is helping, qatar, turkey, theyre potential playe players, and a ceasefire between israel and hamas. In russia in the ukraine, we need the European Union to help us put pressure on russia to end the fighting if the ukraine by finally moving forward with some sanctions. So youre right, michaela, its a very turbulent world. The middle east is exploding, but what we need is allies and i think secretary kerry is doing the right thing intensive whirl wind diplomacy led by us, but also with Major Players like the European Union and egypt and the middle east helping us all the way. So lets talk about that with secretary kerry there on the ground, in the middle east, working to essentially rework that ceasefire agreement that egypt initially put forward, it was summarily rejected by hamas, do you feel confident that were getting closer . Do you think that conditions that hamas has laid out are manageable for israel . Do you think the two are getting any closer . Because the fact is, we saw more innocent die just hours ago. Well, its not going to be immediate, but i see some positive signs. For instance, a reduction in some israeli bombings. More conciliatory statements by hamas. Theyre reducing some of their demands on the block aadeblocka. I think egypt, a good part of this entire effort, is that egypt is stepping up as a potential ceasefire peacemaker. What i think needs to happen now is qatar, they house the hamas people in qatar. I think qatar can play a more active role. The problem, michaela, is that egypt and qatar dont get along, egypt and hamas dont get along, turkey seems to be not playing because theyre so prohamas, i think there needs to be a constellation of pressure moving more in a more unified way. This is where i think secretary kerry, who knows the region well, he invested a lot in this israelipalestinian peace, can bring people together and i do think israel is ready to after it protects itself by destroying some of these tunnels, after making sure their people are safe from these huge bombardments from hamas, that they will move towards a ceasefire which is essential before any more reduction of tepgss is brought forward tensions is brought forward. The hope is it would be a lasting one. We dont want to be right back here in a couple years like weve seen happen in years past. Allow me to turn for a second to the situation in ukraine. Again, were watching the aftermath of 298 lives lost. Innocent victims in the midst of a conflict there. I want to ask you, we know that youve written a book, youve been involved in many high stakes negotiations on the world stage. This book you wrote how to sweet talk a shark maybe youre the man to ask, how would you deal with someone like Vladimir Putin today . How would you negotiate . How would you pressure . What do you think could be done to reason with such a man . Well, i think the European Union, if today when they discuss sanctions, they move forward and not just talk about sanctions, for instance, on russian banks, on stateowned banks that have been bolstering the russian economy, preventing european investors from investing there, a potential arms embargo on russia, technology and other embargoes from the European Union to russia. The problem is 28 countries in the European Union have to act unanimously. But for the first time because of this horrendous tragedy, there seems to be an effort to really punish russia, not just talking about it. Germany is going to be the key. If germany says, well, you know, lets give them more time, then its not going to happen because theyre the strongest economy in europe that deals with russia. But i see signs that finally the international community, after this tragedy, is moving forward. I like the australian proposal of a Multinational Force comprised of australia, the dutch, malaysia, to move in there to get unfettered access to the bodies, to the evidence. This could end up, michaela, this entire tragedy, in an International Court, probably not the u. N. , because russia can veto an International Criminal court effort, but some kind of International Court like the lockerbie, pan am, that involved the libyans. These are not good days for russia and Vladimir Putin. But pressure is what is going to make putin move. I disagree with those that say that putin is not conscious of the International Effort on the russian economy which is being threatened by more sanctions and the russian economy is not necessarily in good shape right now. Certainly isnt. Former am bass tore to the u. N. , bill richardson, always a pleasure to are have you with us. Well hope the european leaders along with other allies can Work Together to put some pressure on the situation there and make some things change. Thanks for joining us. A short break. At this hour were learning more about yet another air disaster, air algerie reporting that flight 5017 with 116 people aboard likely crashed about an hour into its trip from burkina faso to algiers. It was about a fourhour flight north. 116 people on board. The airline says there were people of multiple nationalities on the plane. The state department does not believe that there were any americans aboard. Our chad myers says there was Severe Weather in the region at the time. Meanwhile, in the netherlands, more bodies from the Malaysian Airlines shoot down have arrived in the netherlands from ukraine. 74 cover fins total today. It could be months before their remains are identified. Lets talk about the identification of those bodies right now. Our chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta joinses us. Im glad to have you there. We know this is grim work, really difficult and tough and emotional work but we also know it is so vital. Give us an idea of this identification process and how it might differ from say a regular autopsy . Well the scale alone makes this very different. Its a military base behind me. Its a very somber as you might imagine mood here. A lot of people coming to pay their Vice President respects. In terms of the autopsy alone its scale, you stations set up inside trying to facilitate this process. 75 investigators, i was talking to officials earlier, the process has begun for these investigators. They set up these stations. Everything from looking at the most basic identification techniques, what was the person wearing, what kind of jewelry, any identifying marks on their body and move on to things like dental records and medical records and ultimately dna. Ill tell you, its the conversations right now that these investigators must have with families to try to collect that information. It is time it is time, obviously, but such heartbreaking work. Its all part of this process. Yeah. It certainly is. We know that its going to continue as they continue to remove bodies from the scene, put them aboard the train, get them on a plane, and get them back to amsterdam. Is there any sense of how long all of this is going to take, even just i. D. Ing the body parts they have there . Were not talking about hours and days here, were talking about weeks and months. Its always difficult to say, i will tell you, you know, when you talk to these forensic examiners, this is not something they want to rush. Obviously you dont want to make mistakes. You want to be very complete. Given the idea that these the remains were sitting in this field for some time, they have to be careful about contamination when doing dna evidence, for example. You want to make sure youre not looking at something that is an incorrect result. So when the flight in tripoli crashed in 2010, it took about 30 days for 104 people to be identified, so again i think were talking about that kind of time frame here. Theres questions if the remains were disturbed or contaminated on the scene. Give us a sense, though, as youve been watching all of this, how well equipped are they to handle this . It came as such a devastating and terrible surprise to this nation and we know its impacted them. Do they have the equipment, the resources, to deal with all of this . It really seems like they do, michaela. Again, its very a large number of investigators, 75 investigators, people have been coming in and out of the military base all day. We dont know what their connection is with this particular investigation. But you have a large group of people who have come together for this and also i should point out that the military force here really is directing the investigation. The United States after twa, for example, it was the medical examiners sort of directing the investigation. I think as a result, they have a lot of resources here to get this done. Time will tell, but my guess again, michaela, before final identification is made on everyone, all those souls on that plane, you know, its some time will have passed, weeks if not a couple months. Again, we have to remember while 192, 193 of them were dutch citizens, there were people from around the globe, those bodies will have to be repatriated to their home nations as well. Thats going to take some time. Sanjay gupta, doctor, thank you for looking at this with us.
