"today" show host al roker tracking all of it for us. here in the city, not as bad as we thought it might be. >> right. and that was, again, the track of the storm that moved closer to the coast. we would have less snow here but more snow inland. and that's exactly what's going to happen. however, mayor de blasio announcing that there may be school tomorrow. what's on the ground now is going to freeze up solid because temperatures will start to drop. as you look, this area of pink, that's the mixing of freezing rain, sleet, snow and you can see in new york, they are still in it but we're seeing those changes happening along the connecticut coastline. we still have heavy snow and we've been watching indra peterson in nyack, new york.
the winds are going to be picking up. so here's the problem, we're looking at winds that can be gusting as high as 50 miles per hour. and yesterday we were kind of switching between rain and snow, so the snow is very crunchy. it's that heavy snow that is really sticking to all the branches. think about tree limbs coming down. think about the weight on the power lines. once those winds really start ripping up here, we'll see them gusting to 50 miles per hour. the big concern is whether or not we're going to be seeing a lot of power outages throughout the city. the temperature is 11 degrees right now, so the combination is in store for a big system throughout the day here. >> indra peterson, thank you. still ahead, a grammy night to remember. >> adele certainly dominated, and bruno mars does prince some serious justice. we're back in a moment. >> come on! let's rock! ♪

the clear, think again. another round of heavy snow is heading for the east coast coming on the heels of the winter storm. much of the northeast could see anywhere from 8 to 16 inches of snow. joining us from boston, nbc news meteorologist indra peterson. thank you for breaking that cold. i know that school is already canceled there today because of the expected snow. what is it looking like right now? >> reporter: you know, right now it looks like we may get another band of light snow making its way to the boston area. looking for an additional one to two inches with the band. we are balming out, that's the terminology. o you go with weather geeks here, that means we are dropping 24 millibars in 24 hours. that means the winds will start to gust. we are gusting about 24 miles per hour, but as we go throughout the day, this system is still strengthening meaning
snow hard. >> thanks bill, we will check back in a mitt. >> we want to go to philadelphia where indra peterson is joining us with an update. >> reporter: still unbelievable. we have been talking about the temperatures where yesterday, they had record breaking heat. a half hour ago, a heavy rain came down across the area. temperatures, we dropped 20-30 degrees from yesterday. we are expecting to see the temperatures come down. right now, around the 40 degree mark. i can feel the change. i'm getting a few ice pellets hitting the face. that's how we know this change is coming. let's talk about what's coming. let me show you this camera to the poconos. that's where they are seeing the snow already coming down. that's what philly is expecting, unfortunately, right at commute time. in philadelphia, a winter storm warning in effect. we are going to quickly see this sleek, wintry mix right now. once it turns over and the temperatures drop, we are going to see the heavy snowfall in the area seeing 3-6 inches of snow.

weekends of the year. indra peterson is right where that storm is headed in kill devil hills, north carolina. indra, give us a sense of how things look right now. >> you know, here's the thing. this latest update continues to tell us this system is more powerful than we even predicted earlier. right now we've seen it pick up strength, seeing steady winds at 90 miles per hour. it is now forecasted to be a category 2, let me say that again, a category 2 hurricane, overnight tonight making a direct landfall here in the outer banks. between this evening and the early hours of tomorrow morning. right now, where is the system? it's about 90 miles offshore of charleston, south carolina, but making its way up the coast, so what you're going to be seeing is these conditions deteriorating. if you look around right now, it's a beautiful day. so many people are here for the fourth of july. they're enjoying the sunshine. unfortunately, a lot of people continue to go in the water. this is a strong concern for us these very strong rip currents are here ahead of the storm, during the storm, and after the

good morning, everyone. i'm poppy harlow in for carol costello. we begin this hour with hurricane arthur, churning off the coast of south carolina as we speak. it is bearing down on fourth of july celebrations all the way up new england. right now it is a category 1 hurricane, upgraded from a tropical storm, really just hours ago. strong enough to force evacuations along north carolina's outer banks. and deceptive enough not to be properly feared by a lot of people. the biggest danger may be the rip currents. for those who decide to ignore the warnings and wade into the surf. at any moment north carolina's governor will update us on the hurricane preparations there. the first dangers are already reaching shore. we're covering all angles. we have alina machado in wrightsville beach, north carolina, and indra peterson is north of her in kill devil hills in north carolina. indra, what are you seeing?
