Dont play dumb. We have covered in shake and bake and the entire cast of the untouchibles there too. This hollandaise smells like burnt rubber. God, its hot in here. If i first day as a woman and im getting hot flashes. Ill take mork. Give me mork. Any day. Comic relief, look at his body of work. As if mork was not enough, Robin Williams also gave so much back to the community as well. He helped to raise 50 million to benefit the homeless comic relief. He entertained troops. He often visited with Cancer Patients as well. Robin williams leaves behind three children. Last night his daughter zelda posted a message i love you, ill miss you. Ill try to keep looking up. I think she speaks for all of us. Joining us is comedian chuck nice, a 16 veteran of standup comedian. And i know you didnt work directly with mr. Williams, but you had met him and i imagine that you are like many other comedians out there who can say you feltd his influence. Absolutely. The entire comedy world, all of entertainment felt his influence. He was such a force and as you mentioned earlier at the top that he was a classically trained actor but more than anything he brought a spirit and an energy to everything that he did. When you saw that clip from mork from ork, you can tell thats him improving. We were there and we were all covered in shake and bake. Who writes that . Who can make a character like mork which is so silly on its face, so compelling at the same time . Absolutely. A lot of what he did was like that. There was a depth and humanity to much of what he did. Even his standup where he talked about the struggles that he faced with drug addiction and depression, and he made it funny, but he also made it poignant because he was giving us a look inside what happens when a person is in that kind of painful situation. I want talk about that. Because one of things that has struck me and weve been talking about it all morning, how aware Robin Williams was of the issues he was dealing with, he tawlk about addiction so much. I want to play a clip for you right here. What happens in rehab . What happens . You dry out. I mean, what happens, people basically start the process of, you know, just saying no and being among others, you know, and learning that you are not alone and working on giving up, you know, giving up that you could do it yourself because everyone is saying, i got this under control, gary. Do you think youve beaten it . No, larry. Its always there. Yeah, i kicked it. Im fine. No, the idea is you always have a little bit of fear, like you just have to keep at it. Hes talking about addiction there and recently been battling depression as well. How can you be so aware and so eloquent about Something Like that and also so powerless against it . What were seeing with robin, his whole act, the act being the comedian, thats him. Those are the demons hes expressing. Thas his selfmedication. Thats him working out the deep depression he had. And very honest that the fact that drug addiction and recovery is a lifelong process and for him, it got to be too much. The depression was too deep. There were other medical problems going on, and i think it pushed him over the edge and he made a decision that we see as being the wrong decision, but when you are deep inside of a depression, when you are having those drug abuse issues, it makes sense to you at the time even though you leave so many people that are hurt and you know whats going on. You know what your issues are, but yet you are powerless to fight them yourself. I think we cant miss this opportunity to talk about this notion, chuck, of the sad clown. Weve talked about this before. I know a lot of comedians that have their own, you know, demons they struggle with. Thank you for saying were all messed up and you are right. No, no. We are all messed up. Were all messed up in the head. But they have an opportunity to work it out on stage. We become their therapist when we listen to comedians because they are taking the deepest, darkest, most painful things and putting it out there and making it funny. This is a very sophisticated coping mechanism that we see in psychoanalysis and psychology, so it is brilliant. You are absolutely right. I often would like to go see a therapist, but instead i just get on stanl and it works. You know. Because what you are doing is you are taking theres a saying, all comedy comes from pain. Okay . Very rarely will you meet a standup comic who is good, okay, who is just like i have the happiest life ever. My life is awesome. Thats not necessarily funny. Right. You take pain and you make it into something funny in hope somebody will get a deeper message. Its really a pleasure to have here to talk about what so many is struggling to understand. I know we have to go, but i think one of the things we have to do is take this opportunity to educate ourselves on the fact that depression and addiction are brain disorders. People fight cancer and we say, hey, man, im with you, im behind you, fight cancer. Well, guess what, its the same thing, these are brain disorders. These are chemical malfunctions in your brain and the more we know about it, the less stigma well attach to it. Which means you got to get treatment. You got to get help. And to that end, i want to point something that cnn has put together, there are a lot of folks right there on our panl, cnn. Com impact, there are a lot of tools and resources, if someone you know is suffering and struggling trying to find some help, thats a good place to start. Thanks so much, gentlemen. Secretary of state john kerry has a message for iraq. The u. S. Is ready with more money and military support to fight isis militants once a new Prime Minister is in place. A body was abadi of the was selected to replace almaliki. While this is all going on, isis fighters in some places are making new gains in their deadly march across iraq. U. S. Central command says u. S. Forces successfully conducted an air strike today against an isis mortar position north of sinjar. Were just getting word right now that the u. S. Could be sending as many as 75 more military advisers to iraq, upping the u. S. Participation there. One front line in this dead lie fight, sinjar mountain, thousands of people have been trapped there by isis forces. Some have been rescued. Airlifted by helicopter. Our ivan watson was part of such an aid mission. Joining us now from the iraq syrian border. Well talk to you about that situation. Ivan, why dont we start with you. You can tell us about the situation where you are on the ground right now. Reporter michaela im at the Iraqi Kurdish border with syria. Theres a river in between and a bridge. Weve seen throughout the past couple of hours that weve been here, a constant stream, now somewhat dwindled to a trickle, but it ebbs and flows of iraqis fleeing the isis offensive and they have taken this long journey to get here. They flee across the border to a kurdish controlled part. You can see these people stumbling up the banks of the river. They flow to syria where they are transported to this bridge and brought back into Iraqi Kurdistan. These people have fled their homes, quite literally in a matter of minutes. They are carrying little more than the clothes on their backs. We see have seen elderly coming, weve seen women leading their children, people look exhausted as they make this jurn in and they have nothing because as you go up the banks of the river from here, there are makeshift camps cropping up of tens of thousands of newly Homeless People who have no place else to go. The Kurdish Border guards here, michaela, they say that the stream of people that have crossed and weve seen thousands in the last hour or two was much more in the past two days. This is a part of a massive displacement of people. I spoke with an elderly man who said his family walked more than ten hours to escape. I asked how could they do it . He said when you are running for your life, youll do it. You have no other choice. To bring some context to this, im joined by a kurdish businessman here. His father was deputy Prime Minister killed by a jihadi suicide bomb ten years ago. I knew him. He was a good man, and were watching these scenes here, this crisis now has occurred. First of all how does it make you feel to see these hundreds of thousands of people on the run . Its beyond words how upsetting it is for us. Its not the first time. Weve had multiple attacks on the kurdish nation. Weve had genocide in the 1980s, where 180,000 people were wiped out. We had chemical attacks, and we fled in 1991 after saddam husseins gulf war i and now we are again, its profoundly upsetting and very worrying, im actually from the town of sinjar myself. It brings it home for me. Its not just kurds, Iraqi Kurdistan is welcoming christians, turkeymen, people of the arabs of different religious and ethic groups. It looks like a policy of ethnic cleansing. If you are not an arab sunni who follows isis ideology, theres no place for you . Yes. You have to subscribe to their belief system or you are dead. Thats effectively what happens and kurdistan is accepting everyone. Many minorities, its a rainbow of religious groups, and they are all part of of kurdistan. It must be traumaticizing to watch this all come forth. It is. Thats just a bit of a touch of this and i have to stress this, john, and michaela, we have seen other people on the move in other parts of Iraqi Kurdistan. More than 100,000 Iraqi Christians and all of these people across this region are going to be leaving, sleeping on the side of the road tonight. It is a humanitarian crisis. Its literally an odyssey, and tragedy playing out in front of your very eyes and thank goodness we have you there to show the world what is going on right now. This mass of humanity running away wherever they can, even into syria and back into iraq. Professor, let me ask you this, what more can be done . Are these air lifts enough . Are the air strikes enough . We got word that an iraqi chopper went down while out on sinjar mountain trying to bring aid to people . Its dangerous. More can be done. Its going to take quite a lot to turn the tide against isis. Air strikes will help. Humanitarian air lift will certainly help the refugees but isis is an inl incredibly powerful organization. It survived basically everything the United States thrown at it when it was al qaeda in iraq. It seems like an organism has strengthened and emboldened and gotten more wild. Absolute. In 2011, it was 2007 it was being pushed back by the United States. Pushed into the fringes around moss sewell, since the war in syria began, its drawing strength from that, its converted that strength into effective firing power. What it needs is an iraqi sunni saying no, not here . I think you are right. Thats exactly what turned the tide in 2007. The problem now is the United States isnt there to help them. Professor, thanks so much for being with us. Again, were going to leave you with these live pictures on the border. I can give you an idea of the desperation to walk at least ten miles. My goodness. Were going to take a short break here. Ahead at this hour, were going to take a look at hour the veterans of iraq and afghanistan wars are now battling at home from post traumatic stress, to addiction. What they need is a map in some cases, right, in how to deal with the different situations, situations like people saying, thank you for your service, something as simple as that can be difficult . They describe it a lot as a toolbox. Thats what they actually teach them, tools to manage these stresses. For example, meditation is a great tool when you feel you have these all trushing feelings and you dont control them. All these things to manage how they are dealing with their daily interactions which sometimes can be stressful, sometimes can have anxiety. These are guys, the two that we profile, have very loving families. They are really lucky guys who just lost the ability to feel anything. And they cant even feel the love of their families, which is like this terrible irony. This is a powerful, powerful program. Hopefully its going to expand, save a warrior . I think they are run on a shoe strange string. It costs 1,600 per guy. They have just done their first womens cohort. Its small. Its one of those things they have to decide how maybe youll be airing on this documentary. I would say they would say from your mouth to gods ears. Its called save a warrior and its based in malibu, california. You can see the determination in some ways in their faces. They are there. They are determined to get there. They are warriors. These are guys who have been through a lot. We have to support them fully. Lets do that. Lets give it the due that it needs. The war comes home airs tonight 9 00 eastern right now here on cnn. The death of the actor, comedian Robin Williams at the age of 63. A shocking announcement, the apparent suicide of Robin Williams. Try a little faster. A brilliant comedian, a celebrated actor. Dead poets are dedicated to smoking the marrow out of life. Yet a tortured soul. Ill come back in the morning and ill call you if you let me. On camera, he found humor everywhere, but off camera he was silenced by a devastating depression, with the world reeling from the shocking news, we look at the life and laughter, the darkness and despair. Now, a cnn spotlight remembering robin. The vigils started almost immediately after the world learned that Robin Williams had died. He could be anybody. He can all of us. He wasnt just robin. He was like the collective conscious, like a conduit for a lot of people. Heart breaking and shocking because this Robin Williams, dark and depressed, couldnt have been further from the man we first met. Sunday, monday, happy days. Mork, the a lee yen was first introduced to us on the tv sit com happy days. Hit him fons. No contest. I got it as kind of a fluke. Garry marshall invited a lot of comedi comedians. I went in, i thought lets be crazy. See what happened. Crazy and unscripted always seemed to work for him. He got the part. Remember me, mork from ork. Working with Henry Winkler as the fonz. We started working and i realized i was in the presence of greatness. Hands down. Henry winkler met williams the day he got on to the set. I just realized my only job is to keep a straight face and it was impossible because no matter what you said to him, no matter what line you gave to him, he took it in, processed it, and then it flew out of his mouth, never the same way twice. Born in chicago on july 21st of 1951, williams grew up in michigan, played football, then settled with his family in california. Despite his shyness, High School Drama drew him out of his shell and led him to become only one of 20 actors admitted to the prestigious Juilliard School along with classmate christopher reeve. We were both at a program at jewel yad which is a masters program, to get us into the acting Company Really quickly. He was brought in as the handsome leading man and i was brought in as the furry character actor. We were both in there. Houseman was sitting there, mr. Williams, mr. Reeve, the theater needs you. And created a lifelong friendship. Robin williams is the definition of generosity. Chris reeve told cnn all about it. For 22 years, we go back to juilliard together. There is this crazy story that we signed some pact. Like on a napkin in the cafeteria in juilliard or something. Saying what. If either one of us gets in trouble that well take care of each other in the future. In 1976, he left juilliard. Williams was on a fast track. Nano, nano. Mork was such a success on happy days, it would spin off as its own sit com. You know, when he would break for lunch and he was working with Jonathan Winters on his show, mork and mindy, they would walk down the street together and all of a sudden just stop and then they would start to kibutz, then they would improvise and they would do this routine, in minutes, almost the entire lot was standing there like an open air theater watching these two grade minds go at it. Its a man in the years after mork and mindy, williams would have Great Success on the standup comedy circuit. It was brief, and it was over. The lights would turn bright. Im melting. Help me. A comedic genius fueled by his incredible improvisation, something he discussed with james lipton. Are you thinking faster than the rest of us . What the hell is going on . [ applause ] what is it that does this thing to you . Try to explain yourself. But it wasnt just williams brilliance. During those early years, cocaine also fueled him and a frenetic unpredictability became a hallmark. It would be the death of his friend of john belushi and the birth of his son that scared him straight. Years later, addiction became part of his historic act at the metropolitan opera house. You know what im talking about . Peruvian powder. Cocai cocaine, anything that makes you paranoid and impotent, give me more than that. In 1980, Robin Williams was still starring in the popular sit com, mork and mindy when he made his big screen premiere as pop eye for director robert altman. Pop eye in the handful of films that followed were mostly disappointing. Good morning vietnam finally director Barry Levinson found the role that fit. His role as a rogue military disk jockey won him an oscar nomination for best actor. As did his role as a quiet and inspiring boarding School English teacher in 1989s dead poets society. Dead poets are dedicated to success suck being the marrow out of life. I once met a guy who said i gave up my job at sears and became a teacher because of you and i said i hope things are going well. Williams earned such a third such oscar nod for his depiction of a man who becomes unhinged after the murder of his wife. Then came his role as shaun mcguire, Community College psychology professor and therapist. You dont know about real loss because that only occurs when you love something more than you love yourself. Finally, in 1997s good will hunting, the role that brought him one and only Academy Award for best supporting actor. You are terrifying of what you might say. Williams and Billy Crystal teamed up with Whoopi Goldberg to cohost comic relief, eight telethons using their humor to heal raising more than 30 million. The last telethon was in 2006. The same year he played Teddy Roosevelt in a night at the museum. 2006 was also the year that struggles with addiction led williams back to rehab. Live with larry king. He would joke with larry king about that and what came after. You keep going because theres this strange secret organization that you go to. Alcoholics aanonymous. Dont say it. Shhh. Its unit mouse. You go to those and you find other people who have done things that make you look ammish. You come over out the other side. Staying clean and sober would remain a challenge for williams, even as other parts of his life seemed to be unraveling. In 2008, his 19year marriage to his second wife would end in divorce. Then 2009, he would be rushed to the hospital, heart problems, surgery, and a difficult recovery he would laugh about on the ellen show. You have a heart surgery and literally they p open up, and they crack the box. You are very vulnerable. And you get very emotional about everything. Its a wonderful thing. It really opens you up to everything. Robin williams life trajectory would take a decided upward turn two years later. There was marriage to third wife Susan Schneider and his broadway acting debut with williams playing the tiger who ordinary rates the play. Its alarming this life after death. The fact is tigers are atheists, all of us unabashed. Last year, his career came full circle when he returned to the small screen in the cbs sit com, the crazy ones. You are like an alien. But off screen, williams was struggling with depression. He had at least three reasons to have severe depression. He clearly had the zbletic basis for it and he had addiction, in a recent relapse, and he had cardiac surgery. When you have your chest opened up, the biology is such that it causes severe depression. On monday, he was found dead at 63 years old. The cardiac disease he survived, but the brain disease he was taken away from us, his family, the brain disease is what took him away. Took him away from family, fans, and friends. A really devastating die. If youre having a bad day, watching his movies lift you up. Overcome by profound grief but what his legacy to be one of happiness. Robins wife Susan Schneider released a statement reading in part, as he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on robins death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions. Various marquees of l. A. Comedy clubs paying tribute. To the San Francisco neighborhoods he called home. On the streets of new york and in the halls of washington. Outpouring of tributes to williams are a testament to the impact of his work. President obama recalled some of his most memorable roles. Robin williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president , a professor, a Bangarang Peter pan and everything in between. He arrived in our lives as an alien but he ended up Touching Every element of the human spirit. Williams spirit was described by those who knew him as electric. Henry winkler worked with him on the tv series happy days. He was electrifying. And he was like that no matter what he did all the time. When i watched him, when we crossed paths, when he was doing his show up the street on paramount. All i saw was boundless energy. He would work all day. He would go to the clubs at night and do standup and work on his act. You met him and there was a wave of warmth that swept out of him that covered you like a blanket. His talent . Irreplaceable. There is no one to now fill his shoes. Those shoes will remain right there, empty forever. Comedians at carolines in new york remember williams with admiration. He was a genius. He was very, very quick. If you laughed at one of his jokes, if you didnt get it, he was on to the next one, so a lot of timings when you watch his stuff, you have to rewind it and go back because hes just so fast and it came naturally to him. At l. A. s comedy store where williams career took off in the 70s, Paul Rodriguez choked back tears. I was working at the comedy store in the parking lot hoping for open times and he talked to the owner and he said this kid deserves to be on the lineup. And i got on the lineup. Pauley shore, whose family owns the club, reminisced. When we used to have the comedy store at my moms house, robin used to pick up his check for mork mindy in his outfit, he used to pick up his check and do nanunanu to me. A legend. As a individual, i think he had a lot of heart, a lot of compassion. He did a lot of things for people, publicly and privately. He transcended his sphere of expertise which is like a bench america of comedian and he crossed over to other areas and excelled at everything. Hes gone way too soon. He was very talented. Were all going to miss him. He will be missed for more than his talent. U. S. Secretary of defense chuck hagel expressed appreciation for his military support. Saying from entertaining thousands of service men and women in war zones to his philanthropy that helped veterans struggling with hidden wounds of war, he was a loyal and compassionate advocate for all who served this nation in uniform. He will be dearly missed by the men and women of d. O. D. , so many of whom were personally touched by his humor and generosity. Weve raised over about 1 million. I think theres more coming in. I feel real good. An active supporter of comic relief from its inception in 1986, williams helped raise more than 50 million to combat homelessness. Regarding the shocking news of his dear friends death, Billy Crystal tweeted, no words. Dorothy here grew up riding horses. Williams was also a tireless advocate for st. Judes childrens research hospital. Generous is a word used to describe him time and again by those he knew. Including bird cage costar nathan lane. He said, what i will always remember about robin, perhaps even more than his comic genius, extraordinary talent and astounding intellect was his huge heart. His tremendous kindness, generosity and compassion as an acting partner, colleague and fellow traveler in a difficult world. A difficult world made lighter by the laughter williams brought to it. Williams leaves more comedy work behind. He has several upcoming films, including another in a night at the museum series. Williams, who spoke often and lovingly of his three children, might likely consider them his greatest legacy. His daughter zeld da played tribute to her father on twitter with a quote by a french writer. You, you alone, will have stars as no one else has them. In one of the stars, i shall be living. In one of them, i shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all of the stars will be laughing when you look at the sky at night. She added, i love you, i miss you, ill try to keep looking up.
