Have constant exchanges with President Trump. I share his goals, sometimes we say we dont agree on methods. But i want to get there. I want to have an agreement. And i think theres been a true change. This morning president rouhani showed himself to be open to this meeting happening and President Trump has been saying for weeks that hes been demanding, hes been tough, hes put sanctions, but im ready to have a meeting to make a deal. I think were making progress. I want this meeting to happen and i want there to be an agreement between the United States and iran and france will play the role together with United Kingdom and germany and all the other Signatory Powers and the permanent members of the security council. Iran is a country that is not the same country that it was two and a half years ago when i came into office. Iran was the number one state of terror throughout the world. There were 18 sites of confliction in my first week when i spoke with the folks at the pentagon, including lots of generals and lots of other military experts. 18 sites of confliction, meaning 18 sites of big problems. Every one of them was backed by iran or in some cases actually using iranian soldiers. But at a minimum, iranian wealth. Much of it given in the ridiculous deal where they were given 150 billion, plus 1. 8 billion in cash. And they used that money for some bad purposes. With that being said, i think that iran is a country of tremendous potential. Were not looking for leadership change. Were not looking for that kind of change. This country has been through that many times before. That doesnt work. Were looking for no nuclear weapons, no Ballistic Missiles and a longer period of time. Very simple. We can have it done in a very short period of time. And i really believe that iran can be a great nation. I would like to see that happen. But they cant have nuclear weapons. Thank you. Excuse me . [ Inaudible Question ] if the circumstances were correct or right, i would certainly agree to that. But in the meantime, they have to be good players. You understand what that means. And they cant do what they were saying theyre going to do, because if they do that, theyre going to be met with really very violent force. We have no choice. So i think theyre going to be good. I really think they and by the way, president macron told me every step he was making. He told me long before he came in what was happening. I didnt think it was appropriate to meet yesterday, too soon, and things have to be worked out first. But president macron told me exactly what was happening, who was coming, what time they were coming, where they were going to meet. And after the meeting, he told me exactly what happened. And i think he had a positive meeting. Prime minister abe of japan, obviously a large purchaser of oil from iran, he was also very much involved and he knows everybody there, so he was a very positive force. But i have to tell you the president has done an excellent job and were going to see how it all turns out. Maybe it works, maybe it doesnt. I say it all the time about everything. Maybe it works and maybe it doesnt. But ill tell you what, we made a ridiculous deal, we gave them 150 billion, we gave them 1. 8 billion and we got nothing. And by the way, that agreement was so shortterm that it expires in a very short period of time, with a country you dont make a deal that short. Countries last for a long time. And you dont so shortterm deals, especially when youre paying that kind of money. So i have good feelings about iran. I have good feelings that it will work. I know many iranians living in New York City have many friends from iran. Theyre incredible people. Incredible people. So the last thing i would like to see is a big problem. But we have to do what we have to do. Go ahead, please. You first, go ahead. Reporter president mag reas macron, did you seek President Trumps permission before you invited Prime Minister zarif or did you inform him that he was coming. Thats a precise question. Im going to be very clear. We are part of jcpoa. We decided to remain. So we are very much a sovereign country. Thats why we want the different parties to move. On the other side, President Trump made it very clear over the summer, we never spoke on behalf of other countries. We just tried some solutions and to see if we can find an agreement with different countries. So we took an initiative this summer to make a proposal, a technical one. I got the reaction from iran through president zarif to visit on friday morning. After the discussion we had dinner on saturday evening, i thought that it was very clear about where we can go together. So the day after, i decided to invite as friends minister zarif, so i informed before making it, i informed President Trump that it was my idea, not to involve the United States, not to say this is on behalf of you, of everybody, but to say as friends i think it would be a good idea to ask him to go back and try to negotiate something. So i did it on my own, i informed before making it, President Trump was informed about the situation and the idea for me was in case of an important move and appropriate solutions, perhaps to have meetings between Prime Ministers. So this is a french initiative, but made by clear information of the u. S. President before, information as well as the three europeans. And each time i informed President Trump in order to monitor the situation and to appreciate together something more. I have to say the jcpoa was a bad deal, should not have been entered into. A lot of things could have happened that would have been much different. Theyre allowed to test Ballistic Missiles. Youre not allowed to go to various sites to check. And some of those sites are the most obvious sites for the creation or the making of nuclear weapons. And those things have to be changed and other things have to be changed. And i will tell you, i have very good feelings about it. I think that were going to do something. It may not be immediately, but i think ultimately were going to do something. As i said, iran is a much different country than it was two and a half years ago. And we can get that back and i would encourage it. I actually had friends years ago, many years ago, they were in the Real Estate Business and they were in iran and they were Building Houses and building housing and Building Office buildings and Apartment Houses and they did very well. They made a lot of money. And to this day theyre not exactly the youngest developers anymore, but they were young when they went over there. They made a lot of money and they loved the people and they loved what was going on. Its a country with tremendous potential. I also say that, by the way, with respect to north korea. Kim jongun, who ive gotten to know extremely well, the first lady has gotten to know kim jongun and i think she would agree with me, he is a man with a country that has tremendous potential. Youre in between china, russia and south korea. People want to get to south korea, theyve got to get there somehow. And if theyre going to do anything other than essentially fly, they want to go through. So railroad and everything else. So many things want to happen there. I think that north korea has tremendous economic potential and i think that kim jongun sees that he would be the leader and i think he sees the tremendous potential that its got. With respect to iran, same thing. Iran is incredible people and incredible country potentially, location thats a little rough neighborhood, but eventually its going to be a beautiful neighborhood. I think that its going to be i think its going to work out and i really believe that those countries that went into the original deal, that more and more are agreeing with what i did. But i think those countries are going to be saying thank you some day, i hope theyre going to be saying it, including france and including the president , because i think we did the right thing. I know we did the right thing. If for no other reason, its just too short. Its almost expiring, if you think about it. And somebody said youll go and make an extension. No, no, theyre great negotiators. Look at what they did to get the deal. Look at what they did to john kerry and to President Obama. Look what happened where theyre bringing plane loads of cash, plane loads, 757s, boeing 757s, coming into loaded up with cash. What kind of a deal is that . So i think a lot of good things are going to happen and i just want to say this, because ive spoken a lot with the president this last two and a half days, weve never had a better relationship. We had a lunch that lasted for quite a while that many of you got to see. It was the two of us. No staff, no anything. He wasnt trying to impress his people, i wasnt trying to impress his people. We were just trying to impress each other and ill tell you what, it was the best period of time weve ever had. And we accomplished a lot. I dont mean just, gee whiz, wasnt that nice. Hes a very capable man and hes doing a great job for france. He did an incredible job for the g7 and i just want to thank you. And you go ahead to your News Conference. Very special. This was a very special, very unified two and a half days and i want to thank you for it. Thank you. Thank you. [ applause ] i will leave the floor to President Trump and i will wait for the end of your Press Conference. Translator i dont want to give anything away, but we saw your wife, the first lady, drink a glass of french wine yesterday. So can you perhaps give up on your threat to put sanctions on french wine . Because if weve understood correctly, you have arrived at an agreement on taxing digital firms. Could you confirm that there has been an agreement between you and france on taxing digital firms . I can confirm that the first lady loved your french wine. [ laughter ] she loved your french wine. So thank you very much. Thats fine. Thank you. I will wait for the end of this Press Conference to have a Press Conference. I will leave the floor to him. Thank you. Reporter you have recently been saying that china wants to make a deal but you are not necessarily ready for a deal. Well start now. Please sit down. Thank you. Please sit down. Thank you very much. Reporter youve recently been saying that china wants a deal but youre not necessarily ready for a deal and you like the Tariff Revenue that is coming in. Are you now ready to make a deal . Only if its a fair deal and a good deal for the United States. Otherwise, i will not make a deal. We have billions and billions coming in and i think were going to get there. I do. I believe it more strongly now than i would have believed it a while ago. Were going to get there and were going to have a fair deal. Remember this, when you say fair, china has been taking out of this country 500 plus billion a year for many, many years. Many, many years. It was time to stop. As a private person i used to talk about it. Its one of the reasons im president. And were in a great position. Our country is doing well. Our Unemployment Numbers are the lowest theyve been in over 50 years. Our Unemployment Numbers for africanamerican, asian, for hispanic are the best theyve ever been. Historic numbers. Were in a very strong position. Our consumers are strong, walmart Just Announced numbers that were mindboggling numbers. Its a great poll right there. Thats the ultimate poll, how the retailer is doing and how Certain Companies are doing. So were doing very well and i think that i think were going to make a deal with china and i think probably eventually were going to make a deal with iran, too. Reporter why are you optimistic theyll change their behavior . Its not a question of behavior. I think theyll make a deal and i think they should make a deal and i think if they dont make a deal its going to be bad for china. And i very much appreciate the fact that they came out very late last night and they said they want to make a deal. They want it to be under calm circumstances. I thought it was a beautiful statement. I thought it indicated a lot. Go ahead. Here we go. Reporter i actually have a question for you on next years g7 summit, but can you just clarify something you said. You mentioned earlier today one again. Let me do the clarification and then ill get to the question. You talked about calls to china in a breaking news news alert. Im trying to understand exactly what you heard from china. You hinted about hosting next years g7 at your property. What reassurances, if any, can you give the American People that you are not looking to profit off the presidency . Ill tell you what. Ive spent and i think in a combination of loss and opportunity, probably it will cost me anywhere from 3 to 5 billion to be president and the only thing i care about is this country. Couldnt care less, otherwise i wouldnt have done it. People have asked me what do you think it costs. And between opportunity not doing i used to get a lot of money to make speeches. Now i make speeches all the time and i get zippo. The deals im making are great deals for the country and thats to me much more important. Doral happens to be within miami. Its a city. Its a wonderful place. Its a very, very successful area of florida. Its very importantly only five minutes from the airport. The airport is right next door. Its a Big International airport. Everybody thats coming, all of these people with all their entourages come. And by the way, my people looked at 12 sites, all good but some were two hours from an april, some were four hours. They were so far away. Some didnt allow this or they didnt allow that. With doral, we have a series of magnificent buildings, they call them bungalos, great rooms with magnificent rooms. With great restaurants. We wouldnt have to do the work that theyve done here. Theyve really done a beautiful job. And what we have also is miami and we have many hundreds of acres so that in terms of parking, in terms of all of the things that you need, the ball rooms are among the biggest in florida and the best. Its brand new. And they want my people wanted it, from my standpoint im not going to make any money. In my opinion, im not going to make any money. I dont want to make money. I dont care about making money. If i wanted to make money, i wouldnt worry about 3 billion to 5 billion. At some point im going to detail that and will show. But i think its just a great place to be. I think having it in miami is fantastic, really fantastic. Having it at that particular place, because of the way its set up. Each country can have their own villa or their own bungalo. And they have a lot of units in them. So i think it works out well. And when my people came back, they took tours and went to different places. I wont mention places, but youll have a list because theyre going to give a presentation. They went to places all over the country and they came back and said this is where we would like it to be. We had military people doing it and Secret Service people. Its not about me. Its about getting the right location. I think its very important. Jonathan. Reporter youre not trying to boost your own brand . No, not at all. Go ahead, jonathan. Reporter thank you, mr. President. President macron said he would like to see talks between you and president rouhani within weeks. Does that sound realistic to you. It does. I dont know the gentleman. I think that i know him a little bit just by watching him over the last number of years, whats happened. Ill tell you one thing, hes a great negotiator. But i think hes going to want to meet. I think iran wants to get this situation straightened out. Is that based on fact or based on gut . Thats based on gut. But they want to get this situation straightened out, jonathan. Theyre really hurting badly. Their inflation, as you know, their inflation is through the roof. Their economy is tanked entirely. The sanctions are absolutely hurting them horribly. I dont want to see that. Theyre great people. I dont want to see that. But we cant let them have a nuclear weapon, cant let it happen. So i think that theres a really good chance that we would meet. Jeff, please. Reporter thank you, mr. President. Another followup from what the president of france said, he said that there might be a need for compensation to iran. Would you, given all of the criticism youve made of the jcpoa and all the money they got, be open to giving iran compensation if it met some of the criteria that you laid out . No, what hes talking in terms of compensation is they are out of money and they may need a shortterm letter of credit or loan. No, were not paying. We dont pay. But they may need some money to get them over a very rough patch. And if they do need money and it would be secured by oil, which to me is great security, and they have a lot of oil. But its secured by oil. So were really talking about a letter of credit type facility. Reporter from the u. S. . It would be from numerous countries. And it comes back. It would expire, it would be paid back immediately and very quickly. Yes, go ahead, please. Reporter thank you very much, mr. President. I am with the japanese newspaper. I just left your Prime Minister abe, good man. Great man. Reporter and now the u. S. And japan have an agreement in principle with a tremendous trade deal for the United States. And for japan, both. Reporter so are you still considering imposing section 232 tariffs on japans older exports to the United States on National Security grounds . Not at this moment. Thats one of the reasons we made the deal. But no, not at this moment. Its something i could do at a later date if i wanted to. But were not looking at that. We just want to be treated fairly. Japan has had a tremendous trade surplus with the United States for many years, long before i came here. And ill tell you something, were transforming our country. Were taking these horrible onesided foolish, very dumb, stupid if i would like to use that word because its so descriptive, were taking these trade deals that are so bad and were making good, solid deals out of them. And thats transforming our country. That will be transformative and very exciting, i think, for our country. Very, very exciting. Please, go ahead. Reporter thank you, mr. President. Well, i didnt actually say you. I said the woman behind you. Why dont we do her first. Youve been asking a lot of questions all day long. They say i dont give you access. Reporter thanks, mr. President. Why do you think its appropriate to invite russia to the g7 given that theyve meddled in the 2016 election . And are you worried that if rssia does come to the g7 that it might hurt you politically because its only going to be a couple of months before the 2020 election . I dont care politically. A lot of people dont understand this. I ran one election and i won. It happened to be for president. I dont care politically. Im going to run another election. I think im winning based on polls that we see. Whether i win or not, i have to do the right thing. So i dont do things for political reasons. Is it good . Probably not. Maybe it is. A lot of people are smart. A lot of people say having russia, which is a power, having them inside the room is better than having them outside the room. By the way, there were numerous people during the g7 that felt that way. And we didnt take a vote or anything, but we did discuss it. I inclination is to say yes, they should be in. Really it was a president im not blaming him, but a lot of bad things happened with President Putin and President Obama. One of the things that happened was, as you know, what happened with a very big area, a very, very big and important area in the middle east where the red line was drawn and then President Obama decided that he was not going to do anything about it. You cant draw red lines in the sand. You just cant do it. And the other was in ukraine having to do with a certain section of ukraine that you know very well, where it was sort of taken away from President Obama. Not taken away from President Trump, taken away from President Obama. President obama was not happy that this happened because it was embarrassing to him, right . It was very embarrassing to him. And he wanted russia to be out of the what was called the g8. That was his determination. He was outsmarted by putin. He was outsmarted. President putin outsmarted President Obama. And i can understand how President Obama would feel. He wasnt happy. And theyre not in for that reason. Now, im only thinking about the world and im thinking about this country in terms of the g7, whether its g7, g8. I think it would be better to have russia inside the tent than outside the tent. Do we live either way . Yes, we live either way. Is it politically popular for me to say that . Possibly not. I think a lot of people would agree with me, frankly, but possibly not. I do nothing for politics. I know of you are going to smile at that. I do nothing for politics. I do whats right. And people like what i do. But i just do whats right. If i wanted to go strictly by politics i would probably poll that and say i dont want russia in. But i really think its good for security of the world, its good for the economics. Remember, theyre building a Big Pipe Line in europe going right up to germany. And i had a great relationship and i said, you know, you pay russia billions of dollars and then we defend you from russia. And i say how does that work . Reporter isnt it a misleading statement that russia outsmarted President Obama when other countries have said the reason russia was kicked out is because they annexed crime nia. Why would you keep repeating a lie . If it was during my term, i would say sorry, folks, i made a mistake. President obama was helping ukraine. Crimea was annexed during his term. Its a very big area and important area. Russia has its sub marine, thats where they do the sub marine work and they dock large and powerful submarines but not as powerful as ours and not as large. But they have their sub marines, and President Obama was pure and simply outsmarted. They took crimea during his term. That was not a good thing. It could have been stopped with the right whatever. It could have been stopped. But President Obama was unable to stop it and its too bad. Go ahead. Reporter as the g7 host next year, youre allowed to in invite other guest countries to come. Would you consider inviting Vladimir Putin under those circumstances . I dont know that he would accept. Those are tough circumstances. He was a part and all of a sudden hes not in. So i think thats a pretty tough thing for him. Hes a proud person. Would i invite him . I would certainly invite him. Whether or not he could come psychologically, i think thats a tough thing for him to do. You have a g8, now its a g7 and you invite the person that was thrown out really by President Obama and really because he got outsmarted. President obama, pure and simple. And dont forget, it was not just crimea, it was the red line in the sand. And obama said never violate the red line in the sand,s and then they went ahead and they killed many children with gas. It was terrible. And he did nothing about it. I did. But i was there years later. I did something about it, but i was there late. Go ahead. Reporter thank you, sir. Can you help us understand the timeline on the china calls . Were you referring to the statement by the weve had many calls. The secretary mnuchin is here and youve had many calls over the last 24 hours, but certainly over the last 48 hours. Weve had many calls, not just one. These are highlevel calls. They want to make a deal. And by the way, i think a deal is going to be made. But they want to make a deal. Reporter so the chinese are saying that there werent any the chinese are not saying that. Excuse me. Let me explain something. The Vice Chairman of china you dont get higher than that other continue president xi. Its like the Vice President. The Vice Chairman made the statement that he wants to make a deal, that he wants to see a calm atmosphere. He wants it all to happen. That says it there. You know, you folks were reporting before, well, we cant find any phone call. He released a statement. I didnt release it. He released a statement. Reporter but there were phone calls, sir . Numerous calls. And not only with steve. There were calls with other people, too. Just so you understand, china wants to make a deal. Whether or not we make a deal, its got to be a great deal for us. And i told this to president xi, who i really respect. I have Great Respect and i like him. Hes a tough guy. But i have a lot of feeling for president xi. Hes very outstanding in so many ways. But i told him very strongly, i said look, youre starting up here and youre making 500 billion a year and stealing our intellectual property. Were down on the floor, lower than the floor. You cant make a 50 50 deal. This has to be a deal thats better for us. And if its not better, lets not do business together. I dont want to do business. Forget about tariffs for a second. Forget about that. I dont want to do business. Now, when i raise and he raises, we can never catch up. We have to balance our Trading Relationship at least to an extent. And they were unng to do that. And well never have a deal if that happens. But its going to happen, because they have to have a deal. And as far as phone calls are concerned, secretary of the treasury and other people have been receiving many calls. Not receiving, back and forth, many calls. China wants to make a deal and if we can, we will make a deal. Well see. Go ahead. Reporter mr. President , if i could ask you a little bit about your china strategy. President macron talked a little bit about instability and the worry in the markets and around the globe about instability. One of the things that that comes from, as you youre talking about Global Economic instability . I dont consider it instability. Reporter where it comes from is the back and forth and changing statements from yourself. Sorry, its the way i negotiate. Reporter so my question is, is that a strategy . Is it a strategy to call president xi an enemy one day and say that relationships are good the next day . Its the way i negotiate. Its done very well for me over the years and its doing better for the country. And i do think that, look, heres the story. I have people say, oh, just make a deal, make a deal. They dont have the guts and they dont have the wisdom to know that you cant continue to go on where a country is taking 500 billion not million, 500 billion with a b out every single year. 500 billion. You just cant do that. Somebody had to do this. This should have been done by President Obama. It should have been done and biden, sleepy joe. It should have been done by other people. It should have been done by bush. It should have been done by clinton. Double bush. It should have been done. Im doing it. Let me tell you something else. North korea should have been done a long time ago. Im doing it. Im doing a lot of things that i shouldnt have to be doing. Please. Go ahead, please. Reporter President Trump, youve met Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday. Yes. Reporter you said he was the right man for the job on brexit. I believe that. Reporter do you think theresa may was the wrong woman, and do you think that Boris Johnson can actually get a deal with the eu before October The 31st . Well, teresa was unable to do the deal. I gave her my ideas as to doing the deal very early on and you possibly know what they are. But i would have done that. She chose to do it her way and that Didnt Work Out so well. I think shes a very, very good person and a good woman and i really believe that Boris Johnson will be a great Prime Minister. We like each other and we had a great two and a half days. Ive been waiting for him to be Prime Minister for about six years. I told him what took you so long. I think hes going to be a great Prime Minister and, especially after spending a lot of intense time with him over the last couple of days, hes really hes very smart and very strong. And hes very enthusiastic. And you know what else . He loves your country. He really loves your country. That came out maybe more than anything else. Yeah, please. Reporter President Trump, Boris Johnson is very keen on a trade deal with the usa. Some of his critics are worried that youre going to do over the uk in that deal. No. I love the uk. I own property in the uk. I love the uk. I have no idea how my property is doing because i dont care. But i own turn bury and i own in aberdeen and ireland. Great stuff. Ill be honest with you, i think hes going to just do a great job as Prime Minister. It takes a lot. Its so many different elements to being a great Prime Minister. And you needed him. I just think his time is right. This is the right time for boris. This is the right time for boris. Go ahead, right here. State who youre there. From I Tv In The Uk as well. Youve obviously had a good few days with president macron, who you appear to be doing business with, to use your favorite expression. And after brexit, who do you think will be your more important relationship . President macron, france and the eu, or Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom . Look, france is a great nation. Its being run, a lot of things are happening. Its not easy what hes doing. Hes changing certain ways. Its a very hard thing to do. I wont get into it. Im going to let him sell his ideas. But a lot of people dont disagree with his ideas. But its a very hard thing to do if youre a great citizen of france, you love your country but you want to do the way youve been doing it for a long time. But maybe thats not working and maybe they have to do what he has to do. I think hes going to do a fantastic job, but its very tough for him. I know how tough it is for him. Hes been having a hard time and nobody would have an easy time. But i do believe hes doing the right thing. Boris is different, its a different kind of a deal. Boris has to try and do something with brexit. Its very tough. I deal with the eu. Its a very, very strong group of people. They have their ideas and theyre not easy to deal with, i will tell you. Were very close, by the way, to making a deal with the eu. We made a great deal with japan and were very close to maybe making a deal with the eu. Because they dont want tariffs. Its very simple. Mercedes benz, bmw, they dont need a 10 or 25 tax. I think were going to make a deal with the eu without having to go that route. Were going to have a really fair deal. But the eu is another one weve been losing 180 billion a year for many years. Thats a lot of money. How much can you take out of the piggy bank . Reporter which appliance will be more important, with the eu or with brittain . Both. I dont want to say which. Look, i think that the i ask boris what is happening with england, we talked about it. It was very interesting. But the yu noted kingdom is a great, incredible place, its an incredible nation and its been one of our tremendous allies. And another one happens to be australia. Scott is fantastic. In fact, were honoring him at the white house in a very short period of time. Reporter will you visit aus sta australia . I will, and at some point germany. I just think theyre very different and theyre going to going at it. They may have to get out. They may not make a deal. The European Union is very tough to make deals with. Very, very tough. Just ask theresa may. Go ahead. Reporter thank you, mr. President. I was hoping you could clarify last year you left the summit in canada feuding with the summit host. This year things seem to be a little bit different. Youre talking about unity, you hugged president macron on the stage. What is different . And also as president macron said, hes passing you the baton of leading the institution. You ran on the platform of america first. Now that you have a mandate for the international community, what are you going to do with it . We had a good meeting. I had it out with one or two people where we disagreed in terms of concept. We had a good meeting this year. I would say this was a big step above in terms of unity and agreement. We have really great agreement on a lot of very important subjects. But last year was good also. I think last year might have been a little bit underrated. Reporter in terms of the g7 presidency, what do you want to do with it . Were going to do something hopefully special. Were going to build on what we have now. Were going to be going in with some great unity. If there was any word for this particular meeting of seven very important countries, it was unity. I think most important of all, we got along great. Go ahead. Reporter thank you very much, mr. President. You just mentioned that chinese vice premiere say china is willing to resolve this issue through calm negotiations. No, i didnt say it. He did. Reporter yes. And will the u. S. Negotiate in this manner . Yes. Reporter and also the other question that was an easy answer. Reporter so the u. S. Will negotiate in the same manner . Absolutely. Great respect for china. Great respect for the leadership of china. Absolutely. Reporter and also the other question is that you say you definitely will invite putin to join next years summit. I havent said that, but i think that having President Putin in what was the g8, he was a member of the g8 and i heard he was a good member. Having him in i think is more of an advantage. I think its a positive for the world. I think its a big positive for russia. And its something the group is discussing. They are discussing it. Reporter but just a few hours ago people feel very much like me. Many people. Reporter but the Russian Foreign minister is saying that its not their Foreign Policy pursuit to return to goods8. Whats your reaction to that . Well see. I know one thing. If they were invited back, i think they would be there. If they werent, thats okay, too. I just think they would be better inside than outside. As i said before, i really do. I think they would be an asset. I think it would be a good thing. Yesterday in particular we were discussing four or five matters and russia was literally involved in all of those four or five matters. And a few of the people looked up and said why arent they here talking to us about it . What are we going to do now, go home, take it easy for a day although im not doing that. But were going to go home and start calling them at the end of the week . They could have been in the room. We had numerous things that we were sduftindiscussing. We had a lot of things that we were discussing and it would have been easy if they were in the room. Now theyre just in limbo. But i have to say with all of that, very little limbo. People have speak to them about some things and frankly theyre not very complicated. Josh, go ahead. Reporter mr. President , there was a significant talk at the summit about Climate Change. I know in the past youve harbored some skepticism of the science on Climate Change. What do you think the world should be doing about Climate Change and do you still harbor that skepticism . I feel that the United States has tremendous wealth. The wealth is under its feet. Ive made that wealth come alive. We will soon be one of the we will soon be exporting in fact, were actually doing it now. But we are now the Number One Energy producer in the world and soon it will be by far with a couple of Pipe Looilines that h not been able to get approved for many years. I was able to get an war in alaska. It could be the largest site. Ronald reagan wasnt able to do it. Nobody was able to do it. Theyve been trying to do it since before ronald reagan. Were the Number One Energy producer in the world. Soon it will be by far the number one. Its tremendous wealth and l g is being sought out all over the world and we have more of it than anybody else. And im not going to lose that wealth. Im not going to lose it on dreams, on wind mills, which Frankly Arent Working too well. Im not going to lose it. So josh, in a nutshell, i want the cleanest water on earth. I want the cleanest air on earth. And thats what were doing. And im an environmentalist. A lot of people dont understand that. I have done more environmental impact statements probably than anybody that i can say definitely because ive done many of them. More than anybody thats ever been president or Vice President or anything even close to president. And i think i know more about the environment than most people. I want clean air, i want clean water, i want a wealthy country, i want a spectacular country with jobs, with pensions and so many things and thats what were getting. So i want to be very careful. At the same time at the same time you werent called. At the same time its very important to me, we have to maintain this incredible place that weve all built. Weve become a much Richer Country and thats a good thing, not a bad thing. Because that great wealth allows us to take care of people. We can take care of people that we couldnt have taken care of in the past because of the great wealth. We cant let that wealth be taken away. Clean air, clean water. Thank you very much, everybody. I appreciate it. Thank you. Youve been listening to President Trump in france at the end of the g7 meeting, for about 30 minutes solo after ruffle ro about 30 minutes with president macron. The president made a lot of news on a lot of topics. Ive got four pages of notes here following the headlines that he has been making today. Lets go now to cnns malika henderson, senior political reporter. Niamalika, from iran to russia, finishing up on climate, china, north korea. What is the headline that stood out to you . In many ways the president was all over the place. I think many people thinching they would come away with some clarity on any number of issues you just laid out there on china, for instance, on iran. But sort of the takeway was i think this president was wait and see. Whether or not, for instance, he would invite russia or putin to the g7, unclear. Whether or not he would meet with rouhani as macron seems to want him to do, also unclear. This of course is a flip flop from something he said before. He essentially said that he would meet with rouhani without any preconditions. Now he seems to say there are conditions on any sort of meeting. So in many ways he talked about china, for instance. This idea that theyre ready to make a deal, unclear if that actually is true. He was kind of i think sort of trying to bully president xi there and say listen, the economy in china is collapsing under these tariffs, and so much money is flooding into the american economy. Also not quite true there. Thats not really how tariffs work. This is a president , at some point he made ultimately something will get done, its just not immediate. In many ways, that was sort of the takeaway on all of these issues. This is a president that i think wanted to put a really good face forward in terms of what came out of the g7, but its still unclear what actually came out of the g7. Cnn chief White House Correspondent jim acosta was there in the room in the front row. With us now. Jim, the president said that certainly he would invite Vladimir Putin and 15 minutes later in the same News Conference said i didnt say that. This is the cap of inconsistencies and reversals that have been going on for three days now. Reporter thats right, and the president just wasnt going to be pinned down on this whole question of whether or not hes going to invite Vladimir Putin, as we know he likes to build the real tv show drama. So perhaps the big reveal will come next year when the president hosts the g7 summit, perhaps down in miami at his resort at doral in miami, florida. But i think one of the other major headlines from this Press Conference is that the president did say once again that he is open to meeting with president rouhani. That is something that could potentially happen down the road. But i have to say perhaps one of the biggest headlines coming out of this Press Conference that we just witnessed here in france is that the president would not be pinned down on this question of Climate Change. He was just asked in the last several minutes whether he still harbors these questions about whether or not Climate Change is actually happening. He did not answer that question. When he asked that question, he went on to talk about the virtues of the American Energy industry and how hes opened up the Alaskan National Wildli Refe Fuj up in alaska. This was the president touting the Energy Businesses of the United States rather than clearly dealing with this issue of Climate Change as the amazon was burning, as was a huge focus at the summit. The president skipped the meeting on Climate Change. So as if often the case with these Press Conferences with the president , it is like a cat chasing a laser pointer. When it comes to trying to get the president to answer a direct question. When he was pressed on whether or not there were these calls with chinese officials, the president looked over to his Treasury Secretary, and tried to assure all of us that there were these conversations, these calls that went on. But it doesnt sound like they were at the level that they were described to reporters as being when the president was talking to reporters earlier in the day. So this has gone on almost over the last 48 to 72 hours where weve had inconsistency from the president and top officials throughout the g7 summit. And i think it was fitting at the very end that the president couldnt even be pinned down on this issue of whether or not he believes Climate Change exists. This is a president who was very difficult to get a straight answer from when it comes to some of the very big important issues that are going on at the summit and are going on on a regular basis. The line that stood out to me is the president said that the United States has a lot of wealth and im not going to lose it on dreams, in reference to Climate Change. Jim, stay with us. Lets bring back niamalika henderson and douglas brinkley. Douglas, let me start with you because the president said several times today and throughout the g7 summit that theres great unity amongst the leaders. But what we saw first on stage with president macron, that there were several points at which there are disagreements, especially on iran and this trade war well, its true, but it seemed a lot rougher last year at the g7. If you really were watching this weekend like i was, President Trump seemed rather subdued. He seemed comfortable with president macron. They actually seemed to have a je genial relationship, their wives were getting along. In many ways donald trump seemed happy for a while, at least until this last Press Conference, to kind of be second in charge. Maybe he was actually enjoying his time there. The good news is for donald trump that last week wall street was unraveling. It was awful. This was one of his worst weeks and he made tons of mistakes last week. Here it is monday, the markets seem to be stabilizing a little and hes putting out that fig leaf which might end up being true that theres a deal coming with china and the United States. When you study the president like i do, his moods seem more up tempo. And he used this g7 to polish off his statesman credentials. The idea that maybe hes going to host it at the doral resort next year in an Election Cycle where he gets to show himself with all the World Leaders in florida, a key state to win. And he took time as he always does to mock President Obama over syria, iran, russia. Talked about sleepy joe going after biden. He even called former president bush, george w. Bush, bubba bush if i heard it correctly. It was an odd performance but more low keyed than we used to see him. No bull carrying his china shop around with him. My startling takeaway was the Climate Change jim was just mentioning. Here we are the amazon burning and the g7 only puts in 20 million to fight the fire and Leonardo Dicaprio puts up 5 million. It seemed to me climate should have been a big issue here. The g7 tried to make it one but you had that empty chair of donald trump when the discussions took place. He comes off as a climate denier. Hes calling himself an environmentalist but didnt show up at the meeting to discuss the climate crisis. Daniel dale, before i come to you on Fact Checking on china because theres a lot to do there, niamalika is still with us. The president was asked about this Erat Sicticism with china calling him a good leader, going back and forth on sunday and having his Treasury Secretary and his chief Economic Advisor saying that thats not really what he meant. He considered increasing the sanctions. The president saying thats just the way i work. I think thats right. And he sort of works in tenminute increments. He looks to see sort of the reaction that hes getting. Maybe the reaction from the markets and he clearly was spooked by i think it was a 600point dip on friday. Then he made sort of this socialist statement that he was ordering companies, American Companies to figure out a way to get out of china. Then he backed off of that even though he said he could still do that by law. So the sort of the kind of contrast between the way this president operates in terms of these negotiations and the way china negotiates, they have a real longterm strategy here. If youre president xi, youre not up for reelection in 2020. Hes essentially a leader for life over in china. So you see the president seeming to suggest that he has the upper hand here because chinas economy is tanking and that china is on the precipice of wanting to make a deal but President Trump saying that hes still not sure whether or not hes going to make a deal. The markets are responding. They obviously are up a bit today. Well see how long that lasts. If you look at the point when the president sort of began this trade war, the markets are essentially flatlined since then. There have been dips and some highs and some lows but mostly flatlined. Some of the optimism was based on this claim from the president that there was a call from china. Chinese officials, at least from the reporting from bloomberg, they cant confirm at least the degree of the significance of that call. Daniel dale, let me come to you. The Fact Checking that has to be done after an event like this from the president , when he says that prices have not gone up because of these tariffs, fact check that for us. Whats the truth . Well, weve had numerous announcements from major individual companies that they themselves are raising prices as a result of the tariffs and on an economywide basis we know there is inflation. Core inflation exceeded 2 in july. That was a sixmonth high. We have 1. 8 overall inflation. Thats still below the feds 2 target. But the Blanket Claim that there are no Price Increases is simply false. And the statement also that stood out to me was the president said that the u. S. Had not never taken in as much as 10 cents from china and will soon collect 10 billion. Hes still promulgating this lie that tariffs are paid by chinese companies. There are a couple of problems. One is exactly what you said. Americans pay these tariffs. Americans make the literal payments. Now we have a host of studies that show that it is americans, American Consumers who are bearing the cost of the tariffs. So this is not money that the u. S. Is taking in from china. The second problem is that the u. S. Has had tariffs on china more than two centuries. The u. S. Was generating billions of dollars during the Obama Administration so trumps suggestion that he was the one who created this Revenue Stream is also not true. Douglas, to you. The president talking about his predecessors saying that President Obama was outsmarted by President Putin in Annexing Crimea and it didnt happen on his watch. Fact check here, russia is still in ukraine. He says if it happened on my watch, sorry, folks. The president seems to i guess forget that or ignore it. Well, both. What mainly it is, all he likes to do is score points against President Obama. Thats his favorite foil. He couldnt say i mean to go on foreign soil and be attacking your predecessor the way donald trump did in a gratuitous fashion when it wasnt necessary was very unseemly. Anything to praise putin. I mean basically hes sympathizing with putin saying hes my pal. Well, good for him in a way that he took crimea. Im happy with it. But he smelled weakness in obama and he did it. This is not something that in my mind an american president should be saying. Also the idea that im going to invite putin and then noninvite him. He wants to be seen as the close friend of putin where the rest of the other g7 countries are nervous about him. Hes trying to create a sort of lone ranger Foreign Policy that all roads lead to donald trump. Well see if President Putin is invited a couple of months before the 2020 General Election with the rest of the party, Republican Party has to say about that. Thank you for being with us.
