Welcome, everybody. Another victim sadly of the terrorist attack that happened here just about 36 hours ago at istanbuls ataturk airport has died, bringing the grim total to 42. More than 120 people are still being treated in the hospital. And investigators are combing through all of the Surveillance Video from inside the terminal, including these new pictures to try to figure out who the three attackers were, what group were they a part of. Meanwhile, friends and families are saying goodbye to those who were killed in tuesdays attack. Hundreds of mourners turned out wednesday for the funeral of an airport customs officer who lost his life. And the turkish president is calling for a unified global fight. Listen. Translator there is no humanitarian explanation for this. There is no islamic explanation or aspect to this. Not at all. These people are not muslim. Theyre going to be the occupants of hell. They have secured their places in hell. Causing the deaths of one Single Person is equal to causing the death of all of humanity. This what our religion says. How request one do such things . All right. Here we go. Alexandra field, Live Television joining me now in istanbul. You have been following this story. Now 42 people dead. And were learning more about how the attacks unfolded. We are. Thats what investigators have been piecing together, trying to figure out how this coordinated attack was pulled off. We do know you have the entrance to the airport behind us. We understand that the attackers did come and attacks, but then they broke off. They split apart and hit the airport in three different places. You had one attacker who headed into the departure hall. We know that there was a confrontation with a Security Officer who saw this person with an ak47 shot the attacker. He went down, detonated his explosive. You also had somebody who hit the arrival hall, entering that hall with an ak47. We understand that he was firing shots into the hall. And then it appears he detonated his suicide vest without having ever cleared the security gate there. And then you the third person, the third attacker who detonated his bomb outside of the airport. Now this airport has been telling us since weve been here, and so have turkish officials, that they have actually surpassed the International Standards for Airport Security because they do have checkpoints at the door, which is something you dont see in airports all over the world. You didnt have it in brussels, for instance. But it is the softest of soft target, regardless of whether or not you have an outer perimeter, you still have people waiting in line, crowding at doorways trying to get, in regardless of how far out the security from time to timer is. Right. Thats the kind of targets that they say isis has looked at. Isis hasnt claimed any attack here in turkey. But you do have Officials Saying this does bear some of the hallmarks of isis, looking for a soft target where you would see an international crowd. You know that the casualties, the victims, the people who were killed come from a range of different countries. Yeah. And alexandra, remarkably, this airport reopened only hours after the attack. When we flew in, i dont know if it was the same with you, we basically navigated through the arrivals halimeter ways from where a suicide bomber blew himself up. This airport opened five hours after the attacks. Hala, i was personally startled when i arrived here and you walk through the corridors. Yes, there was an empty and an eerie feeling. But it was hard to tell that so much blood had been spilled here so, much blood had been shed. There was barely a shine of it. They came in. They cleaned this up. They had investigators come in and do their work very expeditiously and they started the reconstruction work as early as yesterday just to get people in and out of the door. That is part of the optics of this. It was important to them to get this airport open as a sign of their resolve here against terrorists who would perpetuate these kind of atake, tell me about the victims here. Most of them were turkish. Most were turkish, but they come from 42 total countries. A 22yearold turkish woman succumbing to her injuries in the hospital overnight. A lot of the victims, their bodies, their remains have now been returned to the families. But there are still families waiting for word on their loved ones. And we know not all of those who are killed have been identified. Alexandra, thanks very much. Well have a closer look at the victims whose identity we know right now, including a newly wed couple coming back or going to their honeymoon. Thanks very much for joining us alexandra field. Turkish Authorities Say 37 of the victims have been identified so far there are at least 13 foreign nationals according to turkish and saudi officials. 23 have been identified as turkish. Five from saudi arabia, two from iraq. Other victims were known to be from china, iran, jordan, tunisia, ukraine and uzbekistan. And this of course is a reflection of the International Nature of this big traveling hub that is istanbul ataturk airport. The cia director john brennan says he personally would be surprised if isis was not plotting attacks inside the United States. Brennan tells the council on Foreign Relations that the istanbul attack certainly bears the hallmark of that groups modus operandi. Listen to brennan. To my knowledge there is no credible claim of responsibility at this point. But thats not very surprising because at least in most instances, if not all, isis has not claimed credit and responsibility for attacks that are perpetrated inside of turkey. I think what they do is they carry out these attacks to gain the benefits from it in terms of sending a signal to our turkish partners. At the same time, not wanting to potentially maybe alienating some of those individuals inside of turkey that they may still be trying to gain the support of. Well a senior fellow at the council on Foreign Relations, he is also the author of ashleys war. The more than 100 people, as i mentioned, are still in hospital. So really the human toll of this, which well be looking at in a moment is tremendous. But gayle, talk to us a little bit about what you believe isis, if this is indeed an isis attack are trying to achieve. It didnt look like this in the early days of syrias civil war. But were seeing more and more attacks against vulnerable civilians here. Thats right. And i think the worse things get for them inside iraq, inside syria, the more a lot of people who watch them very closely say this is the kind of thing youre going to see more of, attacks against soft targets where they can send a message. They clearly sent a message to turkey which is we can hit you in places where youre most vulnerable. And we can expect a Huge Industry to your economy, which is the tourism industry. For so long turkey has been seen as a safe haven in a very tough neighborhood. And i think what you see now with isis and what its doing is to really hit soft targets and make a big splash in a terrible way. And gayle, many people have asked me why doesnt isis claim responsibility for attacks inside syria when they are pretty quick usually within 28 or 48 hours to claim responsibility against other civilian soft targets elsewhere . Well, and this is the thing. When they can sow chaos and confusion, its almost more in their interests as the cia director was talking about. Right. You can create questions around who exactly is responsible while also raising questions was this the Kurdish Forces that turkey is also fighting currently. So you can do what you need to get done in your view while not alienating potential allies within turkey and sending a very clear message that if people think that this is you, that you do have the capability to strike even as the u. S. Force, certainly iraqi forces are inflicting real damage on isis and the territory it holds in syria and iraq. Right. Theyre inflicting real military damage, sure. But this asymmetrical warfare that involves sending three murderers with ak47s into airports, it is pretty much virtually unless you want to live in a Permanent Military martial law state impossible to protect yourself against 24 7. So at some point, what should the strategy be here to try to, you know, protect vulnerable civilian populations from these attacks . Well, and this is the thing. When you talk to u. S. Officials, theyll say there is no 100 guarantee of safety, security, as much as every one of us would like to have one. When you live in open societies, this is where theyre going to hit. They find the soft spots. They find where civilian populations are most vulnerable. And thats where they attack. There is a lot of discussion today among folks that i talked to about as they lose territory, as you see them take defeats on the battlefield in syria, in iraq, as you see them suffer defeat theres, then they pull back and say dont come and fight with us here on the ground in syria or iraq, but strike where you live. And that does a lot of things, including instill fear in all of us. Were sitting here talking about it right now, right. And it also makes people feel vulnerable everywhere they are and gives them this however many people you actually think they have, it gives them a sense of being strong. Right. And you still have that festering wound that is syria. And so many say that is resolved, this problem will not go away. Thank you, gayle lemmon. More than 100 people are still in the hospital after the attack. As i was mentioning, one man was badly wounded trying to help save others. Many individual stories of heroism as is so often the case in these tragedies. Matt rivers talked with that mans brother. He walked into the hospital wednesday night near midnight. The doctors had called him to tell him whether his brother would make it. We met him earlier that afternoon when he told us at the exact moment the attacks happened, he was on the phone talking to his brother angin, who was in the airport. Angin described the attack aloud as the terror unfolded. I heard a noise in the background. I heard brother, there is a bomb. People are lying on the ground. I have to go help. He told his brother not to go, there could be another blast. But he insists. Then came a bang and his brother was severely injured when a second blast went off. He told me over the phone he was hurt badly. I told him i was coming to get him. Then he passed out. Emergency personnel found him unconscious, wounded like so many others by shrapnel. Its the latest in a series of attacks for turkey this year and the affect has been brutal. I feel very insecure says this man whose cousin was injured and remains in intensive care there is no security in this country. You can leave home in the morning, but there is no guarantee youre coming back. Its a reality facing so many families now as some gathered overnight thursday at this hospital near the airport. Hugging, crying, waiting for news on their loved ones. When moammar walked out from his visit with angins doctors, he was stoic. Nothing has changed, he said. Its still not clear whether his brother will live or die. Matt rivers, cnn, istanbul, turkey. Well, turkey is in mourning. Well continue our coverage of the attacks at that turk airport in a little bit. But for now, back to amara in los angeles. All right. Thank you, hala, for that. Well, u. S. And Coalition Forces are striking isis militants as they retreat from the iraqi city of fallujah. The Iraqi DefenseMinistry Says warplanes hit a convoy of more than 500 vehicle, killing dozens of isis fighters. I spoke with cnn military analyst Lieutenant ColonelRick Francona about the strikes. Weve been watching fallujah for some time now since the battle started, you know, three, four weeks ago. We expected that at some point the remaining isis fighters were going to make a run for it. They were going to try to get up to mosul to set up defenses there. So it was just a matter of time before they left. And of course weve had that area completely ringed with surveillance sensor, airborne sensors, drones. It didnt matter what time of the day or night they went. They were going to be detected. Once they were out in the open, virtually dozens of aircraft came in on them. And this was a joint operation. It was very well done. U. S. Air force, iraqi aviation and air force. Almost all precision guided munitions. Tell us a little bit more about that as we take a look at the black and white video. There is a succession of flashes. What kind of missiles . I know you kind of went through that a little bit. Can you talk about how the air strikes were carried out . Well, of course, its all being tightly controlled by the combined air operations center. Theyre watching virtually everything that is going on, and theyre telling the pilots which targets they could go after, which weapons they could employ. When you see these missiles coming off in front of the camera, those are held fire missiles coming from iraqi helicopters. Theyre going after armored vehicles, heavy weapons. So we see that also if you notice in the video, you see these tiny little flashes going along the road. Those are cluster munitions. And those are bomblets dropped out of a larger bomb that goes after individual vehicles. So this was very well done and caused a lot of damage to an isis convoy. If you can also talk about the big picture here in terms of where isis stands and where this fight stands against isis. Its been almost two years since the u. S. Led coalition launched airstrikes against isis and syria in iraq. How much territory has isis lost thus far . Are we talking about half . Most of its territory . Where do they stand . You can use numbers like they lost half their territory. But a lot of that territory is nothing in it. Its a lot of empty space. What is significant are the towns they have lost. They have lost ramadi, tikrit and now fallujah. Fallujah was the first town they took. So this is very significant. And its the last remaining isis stronghold in anbar province. This is the location from which all of those attacks in baghdad, remember the rash of suicide bombings we had in the city itself. That was launched from fallujah. So this is going to eliminate that. And this is going to push isis back on the defensive. And its going to force them further north. Now what youre going to see is the iraqi army reorganizing and moving up the tigris valley for the eventual liberation of mosul. Its going to take a long time. But you can see that they set up the battle properly, and theyre moving up there. All right. Were going to take a short break from here. The latest on the political reverberations following the uks brexit vote is just ahead. Were going to look at the leadership contenders, next. Com now thats satisfaction. Welcome back, everybody. It has just gone 20 minutes past the hour here in london, and the race is on to fill the political vacuum in the United Kingdom in the aftermath of the brexit vote. Leader Boris Johnson and teresa mayor. Angela eagle is expected to launch her challenge to jeremy colbin for the leadership of the labor party. He lost a confidence vote but is refusing to resign despite a revolt among the parliamentary party. In his first appearance before Parliament Since the brexit vote, mr. Cameron had a very blunt message for mr. Corbin. It might be in my partys interest for party to sit there. I would say for heavens sake, man, go well, lets bring in cnn political contributor robin oakley. First off, that outburst by David Cameron in parliament, that was extraordinary, wasnt it . Yes. But he will partly blame Jeremy Corbin, a Poor Campaign in the referendum for the fact that they lost the referendum there is a real bit of personal animus behind that. Absolutely. Lets look to the leadership issue which will play out in the next couple of hours. Lets start with labor because the next couple of hours, the potential candidates who want to lead the labor party have to put their hands up, and thats when the ball starts rolling. Just one of those. Angela eagle, very experienced, popular mp. She goes down well with the moderates, even though she is on the left of the party. Been an mp since 1992. Experience as an economic minister. She is a twin. Shes got a sister also in labor politics. But we wont have any sort of vote for another ten week. Oh, no, we wont get that until probably the time of the labor party conference. And the similar situation with the conservatives as well. Well wont know who the next Prime Minister is even though theyre putting their hands up today. While were still on labor, this is not just a battle over who take others from Jeremy Corbin. He may still win again because he has support of activists in the country. This is a battle for the labor partys soul. And Jeremy Corbin is hanging on in there because the hard left of the party have never reached this sort of level in the party for decades. Right. And once he goes, they will feel their chance is gone. He is like a Bernie Sanders of the labor party . Absolutely. Indeed. Here is the situation well not know who the next labor party is for the next ten weeks. Same situation on the conservative side. We wont know before some time in september. So youve got this situation both Major Political parties will have lame duck leaders for quite some time. Absolutely desperate, yes. David cameron, he has a wallpaper Prime Minister now. He has thrown away all his power and said all Big Decisions will be taken by his successor. The most crucial of those successions will be leading britain out of the European Union. That brings us to the two likely candidates. I think that six put up their hands or ten put up their hands. It come downs to Boris Johnson who is very, very popular. And teresa may, not quite as a popular. This is going to be a fascinating contest. And it has started off on a note which i think will intensify. It really is going to be about class as much as anything. One of the things that held back David Cameron and his chancellor of the exchequer, both of them educated at private schools coming from rich backgrounds. Teresa may, who has got first run on Boris Johnson, she put out an article in the times today explaining what she will do as leader of the party, has very, very clear what she is going on about. She talks about working not for the privileged few, but for everyone regardless of who they are, of where they come from. She said some need to be told that what the government does isnt a game. Its a serious business. The situation, though, for teresa may, she was firmly in the camp. David cameron said the next Prime Minister must lead the uk out of the European Union. How can she do that if she was so remain . She wasnt that firmly in the remain camp. And most of those who knew teresa may probably felt she had strong euro skeptic sympathies. But she stayed with the remain camp partly out of loyal to David Cameron and one or two issues. She never took a specific part in the campaign itself in the way Boris Johnson did on his side. And she will benefit from the stop boris camp within the conservative party. Also this sort of tradition, if you like among the conservatives that the most popular candidate doesnt usually win. No. Time after time this has happened. The initial favorite has somehow faded during the cam main. And teresa may again right sort of credentials. A priests daughter, state educated not at an expensive private school. She has been a former party chairman. And she has also shown courage in standing up to established interests like the Police Federation in her time as home secretary, one of the toughest jobs in government. She really stood up to the Police Federation over corruption in the police force, that kind of thing. She has shown she is willing to fight a case for the underdog on occasion. Just completely opposite person, teresa may and Boris Johnson. Thank you so much and being able to talk over all the noise. If anybody is interested, theyre not quite dismantling the whole ukeu relationship just yet. Theyre taking down. Building a a studio host next door. Am remarks back to you. All right, thank you so much, john. To other news now, Egyptian Authority says a flight data recorder retrieved egyptair flight 804 shows signs of heat and smoke. The airbus jet crashed into the mediterranean during a flight from paris to egypt on may 19th. 66 people were on board there is no word on what caused the plane to dive and crash, but this development could help investigators find out. Free trade, security and climate change. Those were the topics of discussion during a summit of north american leaders in ottawa. But Donald Trumps aspirations also came up. And president barack obama challenged the idea that trump is a populist politician. They dont suddenly become a populist because they Say Something controversial in order to win votes. Thats not the measure of populism. Thats nativism. Or xenophobia. Or worse. And trump is also taking a hit in the latest political surveys. A new pox news poll finds his democratic rival is in the lead to become president amongst registered voters. 44 of registered voters surveyed across the usa say they would choose Hillary Clinton. 38 say they would vote for trump. Well, the same poll found in may that trump was lead big three Percentage Points and those numbers flipped earlier this month. And way have much more coverage of the istanbul terror attack. Up next, how ordinary turks are stepping up to help people stranded or hurt from tuesdays bombings. They think that its sad. I think its important for everyone to know that there is so much more to memory support than the stigmas you hearabout. That these residents still have lives and their lives still matter and that they are still living their lives. That theyre not locked away and that they still have a lot to live for, you know, that they have people that care about them and they have people that love them and i love them, so laughs . Call now to find out how we can put our 30 years of understanding to work for your loved one today. Welcome back to our viewers in the United States and around the world. Im hala gorani in istanbul at the ataturk airport which is right behind me. The death toll now stands at 42 in that chaotic triple suicide bombing attack on the airport. Investigators are now looking at Surveillance Video, forensic evidence to try to identify the three attacker, although the airport opened so soon after the attacks. They have also spoken to the cabdriver who dropped the three attackers off at the airport. Now Authorities Say they believe isis is behind the attacks, though isis typically in turkey does not claim responsibility, even when they are heavily suspected. The human toll, as we mentioned, 42 killed. 120 are still in the hospital being treated for their wounds. Friends and families of the victims are remembering their lost loved ones. Hundreds of people turned out wednesday, for instance, for the funeral of an airport customs officer. Sophia jones is a journalist of with the Huffington Post and the world post. She joins me now. Sophia, lets talk a little bit what we know about the investigation. Its only been 36 hours. Strong suspicions that isis is behind this. Right now all signs point to isis. Both u. S. And turkish officials are saying that the Extremist Militant Group carried out the attack there has been no claim of responsibility yet. It is likely not a Kurdish Militant Group like in past attacks. People are furious right now. Its a really somber state in turkey and people are wondering are things just going to get worse. So theyre furious. What would they want the response to be . In the initial days of rebellion against bashar al assad, analysts quietly describe the situation where turkey would kind of turn a blind eye to some of the rebels and islamists, and some very unsavory characters crossing the border into syria. Is this now an issue because of what they did, their policy of laissez faire policy of the early years . For years the border was known as a jihadi highway. People could cross and come and go as they pleased, depending on how much you can pay, pretty much anyone could cross the border, refugees, extremist militants, u. S. Backed fighters. For years this happened. Now were seeing attacks where isis is rebelling. Theyre furious. They cant cross the border. There are cells across the city in istanbul where isis fighters live in homes there have been raids over the past few months by turkish official. And there is only so much you can do if you have sleeper cellses, essentially waiting for the right moment to strike. Lets talk a little bit about some of the more heartwarming stories. As so often in these tragedies you have individual stories of heroism and random acts of kindness. You reported on some of those. Tell us about some of them. I spoke with everyday turks yesterday who came out and offered support to both those wounded and stranded in the airport after their flights were canceled and they had nowhere to go. I talked to one woman who said that humidity wasnt lost because she has seen 400 people line up to donate blood. People at Blood Donation centers say they have never seen numbers like this. People are really coming out to show their support and to show that they care. And there are hotels that quickly allowed people to stay for free. And given how badly tourism has hit this year, the fact that they would take another financial hit just to be kind is something that it was widely shared by the way online as well. And i know you spoke to those hotel owners. I spoke with one hotel owner, the hotel begonia. He said that hotels on his block had been shutting down because they havent been able to find enough people to fill them. But he actually came forward and offered 16 People Places to sleep that night completely free to show that he cared. Sophia jones, thanks very much of the Huffington Post and the world post. We really appreciate your time and your reporting. And as you heard there, in the midst of tragedy, kindness, human kindness and heroism always finds a way to shine through. Well have a lot more from istanbul after a quick break. And well join our colleagues for more brexit coverage as well. Welcome back to london, everybody. European markets are about 20 minutes away from opening. Asian markets are ending the trade day mostly up as fears of the brexit appears to ease. Here are the latest numbers. Nikkei up a touch. Hong kong up almost 1 1 2 . Shanghai negative territory, but that isnt really relevant. The s p up 1 3 4. Alex, thanks for being with us. When were looking at the economic fallout from the brexit vote, we have this rally on the stock market. But that doesnt actually mean that there is no bad Economic News to come, does it . Yeah, i mean, unfortunately, not. You cant base your economic projection on a couple days trading on the stock market. It was surprising that we got a little bit of a bounce back. Our call is that we got rae session next year. It really starts to be felt in 2017. Okay. The european leaders have made it pretty clear that the uk cannot have a deal with the eu unless its willing to continue to pay into the European Union. This is what the french president Francois Hollande had to say. Translator if the United Kingdom wanted in the frame of the negotiation at the end of it to have access to the internal market, then the United Kingdom would have to accept all its rules with all its obligations, especially one which is to financially contribute to the functioning of this internal market and to its organization rules. Can you put a number on what it would cost the uk economy if they decided that no deal is better than any deal, as nigel farrar says, better than the existing deal, if they just walked away . What would that cost this economy . We havent actually modelled what the cost would be if the uk walked away entirely. We think thats completely unrealistic. Completely unfeasible. These are all the uks main trading partners. Thats completely fantasy land. We have modelled a 1 contraction in gdp next year on the basis of doing a deal that is actually pretty good for the uk. And actually, working towards the deal that is reasonably constructive. So thats the question. What will this deal end up looking like . Because the options are you sort of end up with a near in terms youre talking about or far out, a la nigel. Our call is that well end up with a near in, something that looks not a million miles away from what switzerlands got, what norways got and an eas minor deal that will be very difficult for the new Prime Minister to asset home. But thats what were going to get. Thats not exactly what 17 Million People voted for. Yeah. They werent voting for a modified kind of tweaking the deal a little bit. Yeah. So how will whoever is the next Prime Minister, how will they sell that to this electorate . Well, the next Prime Minister is going to have a real tough job. Theyre going to have to go to europe and eat an awful lot of humble pie. Theyre going to have to go to the electorate and particularly the lead voters and even larger amount of humble pie and basically say to them, look, this prospectus that we sold you that we can have Free Movement and not have any economic impact, thats just not a real option. So at the end of the day after all is said and done, theyll trigger article 50 in the next 12 months or so, do you think. The end result will be not much different to where they are right now. Yeah. So basically, our call is that we get several years of major dislocation, Major Economic pain, political dislocation. And we do a deal that takes us at the end of the day to not a million miles away from the status quo. Very quickly, one of the big advantages of the uk, political stability. You know what is going to happen. Yeah. Obviously, thats no longer the case. Absolutely. Look, the uk benefits from a political stability premium. Investors feel that they can trust us. They know what the legal framework. They know what the regulatory framework. They dont expect to get surprises. The uk has benefitted from that for 40 years. Thats gone. Thats not coming back. Okay. Alex, thanks for being with us. Appreciate it. Thanks very much. Well, smoked salmon, short bread and fine single malt whiskey some of the scotlands most valuable exports. These people are not muslim. They are going to be the occupants of hell. Causing the death of one person is the same is causing the death of all of humanity. This is what our religion says. Turkish Authorities Say 37 of the victims have been identified so far. At least 13 were foreign nationals according to turkish and saudi officials. So far, 23 of the victims have been identified as turkish. Five from saudi arabia and two from iraq. Other victims are from china, iran, jordan, ukraine, and uzbekistan. Isis fighters are on the run right now in iraq and have suffered some heavy losses. Iraqs Defense Ministry says dozens were killed when american air strikes hit a convoy of more than 500 vehicles near fallujah. A u. S. Source says the strike required the precision of american aircraft because a lot of the civilians there were a lot of civilians in the area. Iraqi Officials Say the operations started monday night and is still ongoing. Im joined by u. S. Congressman brad sherman, a Senior Member of the House Foreign Affairs committee and former chairman of the subcommittee on terrorism. Great to have you here. Good to be with you. I want to first talk about the antiisis policy here in the United States. I know that you have been calling for a more robust antiisis policy. So what do you say needs to change . Well, in our bombing campaign, were getting more robust. This convoy we hit today, three or four months ago we wouldnt have hit it. The thinking was, even if youre carrying isis supplies or isis oil for export, you might be a civilian driver. Well, you know, during world war ii, we hit every train in occupied france that we could hit. Why would this not have happened three or four months ago . Because we had a policy of zero civilian casualties. Even the people working for isis, if they were truck drivers, maybe theyre civilians. Its hard to distinguish what is and what isnt a civilian. That has obviously changed. What is is the policy . There is no clear policy, but it appears to be you hit the strategic target, just as we did in world war ii. You try to avoid civilian casualties. This isnt a donald trump thing where you go deliberately after civilians related to isis fighters. But if you see a strategic target you hit it. Defeating isis is really going to have to be a multipronged approach. You cant just defeat them on the battlefield. You also mentioned online propaganda. But also what were seeing is every time that, you know, isis has losses on the battlefield, the reality is we see them export their terror outside their territory. So thats the new reality. So what can be done to defeat isis on those fronts that we just talked about, not just the battlefield . Well, first, weve got to take down their web pages, their twitter accounts, et cetera. Gradually weve been able to do that. Twitter is now cooperating far more than they did a year ago. So theyre going to one on one discussions rather than a broad casting approach. Then what we need to do is we have to have a message that reflects an understanding of islam. You cant argue islam if you dont know islam. And theres no one at the state department weve got tens of millions being spent on getting our message out, but our message is being written by people who dont know islam. We havent hired a Single Person, because theyve memorized the koran. Great to have this conversation with you. Thank you for your time. Thank you. Theres a new leader in charge in the philippines. He was sworn in a short time ago as the countrys 16th president. He won the election in may by 16 million votes. Hes known as the punisher for his gettough approach to crime. Duterte has promised to dump criminal bodies in manila bay. Now to what may be the most awkward hand shake ever. It happened when the canadian Prime Minister tried to have a double shake with president barack obama and the mexican president. Even seemed a bit amused by it. They were in ottawa, canada, for the north american leaders summit. All right. That does it for this hour. Im amara walker. Our special coverage of the aftermath of the terror attack istanbul continues with hala gorani after a short break. Stay with cnn. Hello and welcome to our viewers in the United States and around the world. Im Rosemary Church at cnn World Headquarters, covering the fight against isis, the egypt air investigation, and u. S. Politics. Im john vause outside parliament in london with the latest on the brexit, the fight for the torrey leadership and why scotland wants to remain in the eu. And im hala gorani, live outside the airport in istanbul, covering the investigation into the terrorist attack. What survivors are saying now. This is cnn newsroom. Well, authorities are hoping that new Surveillance Video emerging now, along with some forensic evidence, will help them identify the three men who blew themselves up here at this busy airport, trying to cause maximum damage and carnage. Theyre also looking into where the taxi driver picked them up tuesday. In total, 42 people were murdered in this attack behind me. More than 120 others are still being treated at hospitals. Authorities are defending their decision to reopen the airport so quickly after the attack. A mere five hours just about. They say ataturk security far exceeds International Standards. Turkeys president is calling for a Global Response to the threat. Listen. Translator there is no humanitarian explanation for this. There is no islamic explanation or aspect to this. Not at all. These people are not muslim. Theyre going to be the occupants of hell. They have secured their places in hell. Causing the death of one Single Person is equal to causing the death of all of humanity. This is what our religion says. How can one do such things . Reporter lets bring in cnns alexandra field, joining me here in istanbul. We were talking about the taxi driver. He did pick up the three men, dropped them off. He was questioned then released. Right. This is the last person who would have been with these three men last, so he was important for police to speak with. This is where taxis pull up, they can go right to the terminal. Then people approach security. But this taxi driver could give some good clues about who these men were. We know they had ak47s and the suicide vests they detonated here at the airport. But as police go through the cctv images from inside the airport as they analyze any images, the taxi driver would have a more full description. Reporter remarkable that each one armed with ak47s, each with a suicide vest, all crammed into one taxi cab. Well see whether or not he will be helpful to police. He can talk about what kind of language they were speaking. They believe these three men may have been foreign nationals. Thats one of the assumptions theyre operating under. So perhaps you can help them get closer to identifying who these people are. These cab drivers have been integral in other investigations. In brussels, some of the bombers were dropped off in a taxi. The police in these cases want to know whether explosives were put in the trunk, what they were wearing, what they were carrying. Reporter in brussels, that was one of the elements as well. One of the cab drivers. But now isis has not claimed responsibility, but the suspicion and the investigation is leading us in that direction, because the other potential suspect, pkk, which is the kurdish separate group, would have no reason to strike at the airport. Officials believe there would be reason for isis to strike here. There have been eight suicide strikes in turkey in the last year. This type of target, again, we know that this is very similar to the brussels attack, also similar to the paris attack where youre opening fire and launching explosives at civilians. Its designed for maximum impact and global attention and youre targeting a very international group. Reporter its no coincidence they targeted the international and not the domestic terminal, because its a reflection of how cosmopolitan this transport hub is. We flew in here just a few hours ago and it felt like we were walking through a crime scene, just yards away from where the arrivals are is where one of the men blew himself up. It was stunning to me, as well. I walked through and i saw shattered panes of glass and the construction work was already being done. Look, the Security Services here in turkey are saying that they were ready to open up this airport, they were prepared to ensure the safety of passengers. The investigators said they got in and did the forensic work they needed to do. This is about sending a message about turkeys resolve. But it is very striking, because again, if we think back to the next closest example we have, which was the brussels attack just a few months ago, we remember there was literally a perimeter around the airport, cars being kept away, and it was days before they could let the engineers in to assess the damage done there to make rebuild plans. Reporter alexandra field, thank you very much. Well go back to alexandra with more on the investigation and the coverage of this aftermath of this attack. Now, people from around the world are paying their respects to the victims of the airport attack. Many on social media are using the prayforturkey. Theresa crosby tweeted, again, slaughter of innocent people. My heart goes out to all. Another post uses this artistic image of the turkish flag. Germany protected a turkish flag on its brandinberg gate in berlin in honor of those who died. In moscow, hundreds expressed their condolences by laying flowers outside the turkish embassy. And pope francis prayed for the victims and their families. And speaking of the victims, 37 of those who were killed have been identified so far. At least 13 were foreign nationals, according to turkish officials. So far 23 of the victims have been identified as turkish. Among the foreigners, five were from saudi arabia. Two from iraq. Other victims are known to be from china, iran, jordan, tunisia, ukraine, and uzbekistan. One newlywed couple who survived the attack, describe it as their Worst Nightmare. Cnns Senior International correspondent ivan watson was able to speak to them. Reporter steven and his wife just got married. It was such a beautiful wedding to be honest. She deserves it. Reporter after a honeymoon in greece and italy, they were in istanbul, waiting for their flight back home to the u. S. Thats when the terrorists attacked. I literally ordered the salads and the pizza slice. When the guy turned to put the slice in the oven, i heard the gunshots from far. Reporter did you recognize they were gunshots . Yes, ak47 automatic rifle. What does through your head . That shes hurt. My Worst Nightmare is haunting us down. Reporter steven said he saw a man with a gun shooting in the departures hall. What did he look like . Im not sure if he was the actual gunman or the cops firing at him, but there was a gun and bullets coming from it. I could see the echoes and all that from the gun. Reporter the couple ran and hid in this little kitchen, which steven filmed on his phone. Through the door, they heard chaos outside. We heard people yelling, stop, stop. I was like, this is somebody killing somebody else. Reporter steven didnt know whether or not the gunmen were still in the airport, on the hunt for more victims. At that point, i said im going to make a video to tell our story, because were going to most likely die here. [ whispering ] reporter speaking in his familys native arabic, he tells them to pray for him. I remember i told him, thats it, this is our last seconds. Were going die right here. This is when i realized this is the moment i might lose my new family i just made and everything i dreamed for. Reporter but steven says if a militant came through the door, he wasnt going to go down without a fight. I was going to kill him, this is it. This is my new life. Reporter 45 minutes later, the terrified couple eventually emerged. To bloody scenes in the airport. I want to thank all the turkish first responders, the ambulances, the drivers, the cops. They were protecting us. They were doing their best. A lot of them were bleeding, so they fought it out. Reporter an ambulance rushed her to a hospital. Shes recovering from bruises suffered after being trampled people fleeing the gunmen. But dealing with the Emotional Trauma has barely begun. I want to go back to the states. I dont want to come back to this country anymore. I dont want to come to the middle east anymore. Reporter this evening, the couple rushed to catch a flight out from another istanbul airport, hoping to leave this horrible chapter of their honeymoon far behind. Ivan watson, cnn, istanbul. An incredible story of survival there. And a punishing round of u. S. Led air strikes on isis targets in iraq is most likely not in retaliation for the attack in istanbul. The operation started monday. Iraqs ministry of defense released new video showing u. S. Warplanes and iraqi helicopters hitting isis vehicles outside the city of fallujah. U. S. Officials said they took great care not to hit civilians. Joining me now to talk more about these air strikes is Lieutenant ColonelRick Francona. Thank you for being with us. According to iraqs ministry of defense, these air strikes on more than 500 vehicles fleeing fallujah killed dozens of isis militants and u. S. Officials tell us that u. S. Planes conducted precision strikes in this joint operation. How significant is this, and what impact will it likely have on the effort to stop isis in its tracks . Well, this is a very good operation. We see both Iraqi Army Aviation and u. S. Air force assets conducting these strikes, very effective, and theyre doing so because there are a lot of civilians in the area. They were able to take out a lot of vehicles using the full range of precision guided munitions. This is well done, and it really stops isis, because theyve got to get all their assets up to mosul, because thats where the big fight is going to be. This robs them of many, many ass assets. Of course, we understand this operation began monday. Its still ongoing. How might this all play into the effort to take back mosul from isis . Well, weve seen in the past when the iraqis take these cities, isis has been very successful at getting away, and moving assets into the areas that they control. They were not able to do it this time. The iraqis are gearing up for the attack on mosul. Its going to be a long, drawnout operation, because they have to go far north with a lot of assets to take on isis. But this hurts isis and will make the effort in mosul a little easier. But its still going to be a very tough battle. In the wake of the deadly terror attack on istanbuls airport, theres been much talk about a United Global fight against isis that would include nations that have been more reluctant to join at this point. How likely is that, and how might it work . Well, i think were going to see more nations coming together, because this really woke a lot of people up, and it shows that isis is morphing into a different organization. No longer are they a caliphate. They are losing ground every day. The lost of mosul and raqqah are predetermined, its just a matter of how long it will be. Many other nations will join the fight, because they know this will not be localized, it will be coming to their doorsteps. Rick francona, thank you very much. Good to be with you. Well take a short break. Still to come, the sharp divisions over brexit are on display in the british parliament. It might be in my partys interest to sit there. Its not in the National Interest. I would say for heavens sake man, go still ahead, David Camerons flash of anger at the labor leader. Why are you checking your credit score . Well you dont want to live with mom and dad forever, do you . She says. Bazang ok, good one. Uh, how do i check my credit score . Credit karma, its free. Credit karma. Give yourself some credit. Welcome back, everybody. The markets have been open for about 17 minutes in europe. The ftse down by half a percent. Paris down by almost 1 , as well. And after the brexit vote, the political terrain here in the uk is shifting, with the number of leadership changes. The leave campaigner Boris Johnson and theresa may are among the conservatives expected to announce bids to succeed dave cameron as Prime Minister. And angela eagle is expected to launch her challenge for the leadership of the labor party. He lost a noconfidence vote on monday. And since the vote, Prime Minister dave cameron had a very blunt message for mr. Corbin. If hes looking for excuses about the side he and i were on about the referendum, frankly, he should look somewhere else. And i have to say, he talks about job insecurity and my two months to go. It might be in my partys interest for him to sit there. Its not in the National Interest to sit there. And i would say, for heavens sake, man, go robin oakley joins me now. So you have dave cameron telling corbin to go, the vast majority of the party telling him to go. Four former leaders of the party appealing to him to step down. Yet he is Standing Firm and theres a very good chance that he could win the next leadership challenge. Absolutely. He had 60 of the vote last september among the party activists. Hes also got the trades unions behind him, ten Union Leaders putting out a statement backing him in this situation. But what were seeing here is a fight for the whole soul of the labor party and whether the labor Party Continues to exist in its present form. Jeremy corbin may well be reele reelected, even though angela eagle probably now has the support of 51 mps to put up a challenge. If he comes back, we may have labor splitting and deciding that theres no future for them. They have about an hour or so to put the names forward, it will be angela eagle probably the only one. But then ten weeks before we find out the next leader of the party. And then we wont know who the next Prime Minister will be until september. September 9th. We have to wait until then to have somebody who can loead thi country forward and shape the negotiating deal to take britain out of the uk. Boris johnson and theresa may are the two frontrunners. The vision for britains future outside europe is vital. But also its becoming a battle about class. Theresa may, state educated daughter of a priest, making very much of her credentials, as somebody who understands what life is like for ordinary tough, working families. Boris johnson, a high earner in the media, a privileged background, private school, theres been this resentment at the top of the conservative party about dave cameron and journal osbourne, both being from rich backgrounds, privately educated. Theres a feeling the torrey party needs to get back in touch with ordinary people. Theres an email from Boris Johnsons potential deputy saying, dont trust fboris. Thats the big factor. Many people think he wanted to remain but chose to go for leave to further his own ambitions. This email says that michael gove, his chief ally in the leave campaign, shouldnt trust him without getting something in writing. Get it in writing. Robin, good to see you. Well have much more on the brexit later this hour. But now back to Rosemary Church in atlanta. Thanks, john. There is a new leader in the philippines. Rodrigo duterte was sworn in as the countrys 16th president. He won the election in may by 16 million votes. Hes known as the punisher for his gettough approach to crime. Hes vowed to dump bodies of dead criminals in manila bay. Hes also accused catholic bishops of doing nothing but trying to get money for themselves. Egyptian Authorities Say a flight data recorder retrieved from egypt air flight 804 shows signs of heat and smoke. The airbus jet crashed into the mediterranean on may 19. 66 people were on board. No word on what caused the plane to crash, but this could help investigators find out. Lets bring in Jim Bittermann for more details. This represents a critical turning point in the investigation, and now that were learning that heat and smoke were involved, whats the next step in the investigation . Reporter well, the next step is going to take a look at the cockpit recording of the voices of the pilots to find out exactly what they were reacting to, what kind of a situation they were reacting to. The experts are saying this morning that this seems to indicate it may have been a mechanical failure rather than something else. Although its still possible that the heat and smoke could have been caused by some kind of a bomb or Something Like that. Now it seems more likely it may have been a mechanical failure that brought the plane down. In fact, whats happening right now is that the egyptians are in charge of this investigation. So all of the information that was taken off of the data recorder was sent to egypt. Thats where were getting our information from. However, both reporters, both the voice recorder and data recorder were damaged severely. They were brought here to france, where they managed to read it and now theyre working on the voice recorder to see if they can make that work, as well. The other thing thats happening on this end is that the French Prosecutors Office has opened up an investigation for involuntary manslaughter. This is routine procedure here. Any time a french person is killed overseas and there were french on board the aircraft, theyve opened up an investigation, because it allows the prosecutor to be a part of the information chain and he can take a look at the kind of information thats being gathered and decide whether or not there is somebody that can be criminally liable for it. Jim bittermann, thanks to you. Much more on the istanbul terrorist attack, including where the cia director thinks isis might strike next. Were back with that. A warm welcome back to our viewers in the United States and around the world. Im Rosemary Church at cnn World Headquarters in atlanta. Im john vause outside parliament in london. And im hala gorani live outside the airport in istanbul. Another victim of tuesdays attack has died here, bringing the grim total to 42. And also keep in mind, more than 120 people are still being treated in hospitals across the city. Investigators are now looking into new Surveillance Video that has emerged, working to figure out who the three suicide bombers were. And if they were directed or inspired by isis. Now, isis has not officially claimed responsibility for this act, but take a listen to this dire prediction from cia director john brennan. I would be surprised that isil is not considering carrying out these attacks in the near abroad and far abroad. The United States is leading the coalition to try to destroy as much of this poison inside of syria and iraq as possible. So it would be surprising to me that isil is not trying to hit us, both in the region, as well as in our homeland. Reporter sophia jones is a journalist for the Huffington Post. Shes based here in istanbul. Talk to us about the reaction among turks to this attack. People are furious, and they are terrified. But theres also people are coming out and they want to show their support and show while these attackers want to divide and instill fear, that theres also love, people care. People are donating blood, opening their homes to strangers. Reporter what do they want their government to do . This is the eighth suicide bomb thing year, and clearly, they must want do they want a strong response . Do they feel like if it is isis, this problem should be solved at the source in syria and iraq . What is the general feeling among the public . Theres still quite a bit of support for the government. Most people are very proerdogan. But people are saying what were doing isnt enough. They had the border open for years really. It was called the jihadi highway. People could cross back and forth. Militants, refugees. Now that border is sealed and isis is acting out because of that. Reporter the concern is there might be cells preparing other attacks. There are isis cells across the country, and there is concern there will be future attacks. People are saying look, if this airport can be attacked, what next will happen . You spoke of individual acts of kindness and generosity. I always love those stories, because we focus a lot on the evil of a terrorist attack and overhook the fact that most people just want to help. One woman told me that humanity wasnt lost, because she seen hundreds line up for hours to donate blood. People are showing they care. So many of the victims were in this case muslim victims. Muslim victims of isis, the vast majority of isis attacks are muslims. So you also spoke to a hotel owner, that despite the fact that tourism is a factor, has opened his hotel for free. He told me that many hotels in the area were shutting down because there werent enough tourists. But he was on twitter and saw they were overcharging tourists and opened up his hotel for free to 16 people. Lets talk about the fact that this airport, were on this access road. Right here is the entrance where cars are stopped. Before the attack, every third or fourth attack was looked over in a superficial way sometimes. How has this changed . Seeing any major change to how the Airport Security is being handled . Its operating pretty much the way it always had. Right now theres no check point to get into the airport. So if there was another bombing, it could target this area. What im wondering is if theyre going to have future checkpoints so if a bomb goes off it will protect people. The big challenge is, you want to live under complete martial law where you have ten perimeters of securities and checkpoints making life virtually impossible. If they had that many more check points, the waits would be longer. Sophia jones from the Huffington Post, thank you very much for joining us. Well have much more from turkey in a moment. But lets turn now to john vause who is in london. John . Hala, thank you. British leaders scramble to figure out how the uk will leave the eu, scottlands first minister is looking for ways to keep her country in. She met with eu leaders on wednesday to plead her case. We are in the early stages of this process. Clearly scotland has a desire to protect our relationship with the European Union. I dont underestimate the challenge for those seeking a path ahead. Scotland doesnt want to leave the European Union. Cnns Dana Mckenzie is live this hour from scotland. Many exporters there are already counting the cost of a brexit. Reporter thats right. Of course, the uk is a huge market for food and drink manufacturers here in scotland. But so is europe, and its a growing one. As european consumers enjoy things like whisky and shortbread and all the products that make scottish manufacturers famous. We went to one baker, who is hoping that their business is not going to be hurt. Hand rolled oatmeal, theyve made them here for nearly 100 years. You dont get more scottish than this. As traditional as it comes and very hand crafted. Reporter sandy miln has grown this family bakery into a business that employs more than 100 people. Would a brexit affect your business . I just dont know. I dont know. Im not sure that the electorate got all the answers before they made their decision. Reporter but uncertainty is a bad thing. Absolutely, it is a bad thing. Reporter the bakery holds a royal seal of approval. So when the king or royal family is in scotland and wants oak cakes, apple pie or shortbread, they call on miln. Would you rather be part of europe or supply the royal family . I would definitely be happier to be part of a european family. Although the queen is right up there. [ laughter ] reporter there is a very real possibility that scotland with the rest of the uk could lose tariff free access to the continent with brexit. Around 20 of the product is taken from the bakery here and sent by district distributors throughout the year. One of the key markets, of course, is europe. Reporter the access has helped make some premium scottish brands household names around the world. Can i have a bite . You can indeed. Reporter excellent. But bakers like him dont want the door shut on their biggest future market. Certainly not the hottest assignment in history there, john. Certainly delicious products from that bakery. One thing i found very interesting from that baker, he talked about the generational effect on the economy here in scotland, how his father and grand father in that region, they had these small familyrun businesses. The economy at times were depressed. He attributes the access to the large, open European Market as one of the ways that these Small Businesses can expand and then access places that, you know, appreciate the quality of scottish product. So he isnt sure, like anyone else, whether that door will be closed any time soon, but its certainly a worry for them, because they do see a lot of progress amongst their own families in the last few generations. John . Yeah, it is always that question of uncertainty. That will be with us for quite some time. David mckenzie, live. When we come back, were learning how the attacks at istanbul airport unfolded. Credit karma. Give yourself some credit. Welcome back, everyone. Im hala gorani, live outside istanbuls ataturk airport. Turkey on this day is mourning 42 people at least are dead, after a terrifying attack here. No one has claimed responsibility for it, but u. S. And turkish officials suspect isis is behind the triple suicide bombing. And we are learning more about how the attackers carried out this atrocity. Our tom foreman has that. Reporter were getting a much better picture how these attacks unfolded. Lets lock at the lay yut of the airport. At 9 50 in the evening, a taxi with the three gunmen pulled in along here, on the lower level. They all got out, they started shooting almost immediately, according to authorities. And for some reason, one of them set off his bomb right in that area. Its not clear why. They were trying to penetrate the first layer of interior security. Its not clear if he couldnt get through but he blew up his bomb right out here. According to one eyewitness, this may have been the most powerful of all of the blasts. The second gunmen ended up going to the middle of the airport, down along here. Still in the area they drove in on, and he pushed through shooting until he got to the arrival section. Remember, tremendous amount of confusion, people didnt know which way to run. And people getting off of planes coming into this who have no idea anything is happening. Thats where this video comes from that you have seen so very much. This one likely will have produced an awful lot of the injuries and casualties, because you can see even in the video, there were a lot of people there. Last gunman goes all the way to the other end of the airport down here, and he goes up one level where he is shooting at people. And he comes to this particular corner inside the airport. Thats where this video comes from, where he gets shot and put down by a police officer. And while lying on the ground there, he sets off his explosives, but only after theres been a lot of time for a lot of people to clear away from his position. In any event, the important thing here is when you consider all of these pieces of video and where these attacks happen in this airport, you can see where investigators are saying this looks very much like a coordinated, planned attack in which they spread out and try to shoot as many people as possible before the suicide bombers blew themselves up. Tom foreman reporting there. Well have a lot more from Ataturk International airport here. More on the aftermath of this terrible suicide attack. Lets go back to Rosemary Church in atlanta. Shes following other stories making headlines. Thanks, hala. Lets turn to the u. S. President ial race. The latest surveys have Hillary Clinton in the lead. Cnns poll of polls finds that 46 of registered voters surveyed across the u. S. Say they would vote for the democrat. 40 say they would vote for donald trump. And the Presumptive Republican president ial nominee is facing criticism for his suggestions on how to fight terrorism. Now democrats and republicans are angry at trump for promoting again a controversial interrogation technique. Our senior White House Correspondent jim acosta has more. Reporter Donald Trumps battle cry for fighting terrorists after the airport attack in turkey, an eye for an eye. You know, you have to fight fire with fire. Reporter hours after the bombings, trump called for a return to waterboarding, banned by the obama administration. They probably think were weak, were stupid, we dont know what were doing, we have no leadership. Reporter and the presumptive gop nominee suggested without providing any evidence to back his claim that international and u. S. Laws banning torture during times of war are standing in the way, emboldening groups like isis. Their laws say you can do anything you want and the more vicious you are, the better. So we cant do waterboarding, its not the nicest thing but peanuts compared to many alternatives, right . Reporter trumps heated response to the carnage in istanbul was a departure from his toned down, scripted speeches on dismay in recent weeks. And it goes way beyond hill helds more muted reaction to the attack. Some republicans like john mccain arent ready to adopt the trump doctrine, arguing waterboarding is torture. If we torture people, then what would we expect that our enemy would do to americans that were captured . Does that open the door for that . I could go on for a long period of time, but in summary, its not the United States of america. Reporter trump is also on a tear on trade. Promising voters he will rip up who want to rape our country, just a continuing rape of our country. Reporter trumps trade proposals prompted a rare rebuke from the chamber of commerce, which tweeted, we would see higher prices, fewer jobs and a weaker economy. All of that has Top Republicans still reluctant to throw their full weight behind trump. So my hope is hes beginning to pivot and become what i would call a more serious and credible candidate for the highest office in the land. At the moment, i hear you saying he doesnt meet that threshold. Hes getting closer. That was jim acosta report thing. U. S. President barack obama met with his mexican and canadian counterparts in ottawa, and reassured them that ties between their countries will remain strong, even if donald trump is elected president.
