Joe bidden, as you mentioned, as well as President Trump. He was in a rules section of nevada, trying to frame this as, they need to bring out the rule vote. That that is where republicans see as their path in trying to keep congressman senator dean heller in office. So, we it is very, very early so far, erica. But what we can tell you is after just three days of early vote, the democrats here in clark county are feeling very good. They are having very strong turnout. A very different picture from what they saw in the last midterm, when enthusiasm was low and the democrats did not turn out in clark county. But, again, erica, it is very early. We anticipate the president , the former president , will begin to speak in just about one hour. All right, kyung lah with the latest for us there, from las vegas. Kyung, thank you. One senator whos been very busy campaigning for fellow democrats also likely testing the waters for a 2020 bid. Kamala harris. Today, shes in the allimportant primary state of iowa, impossible to miss that significance. Cnn political reporter maeve reston is just north of des moines and joins us now. Maeve . Reporter hey, erica. So Kamala Harris was here today, talking to young voters and really voters of all ages on a Community College campus. Early voting, as kyung mentioned, is also underway here in iowa. Right behind me, theres a very slow trickle of people headed in there. But thats why, ostensibly, Kamala Harris was here today, to really generate the vote, generate the enthusiasm, get people out to vote. She was asked about her 2020 ambitions and said that the only message she had on that was that theres 15 days left, people have got to get out to vote. And its the most important election of their lifetime. She also did way in on a couple of hotbutton issues in the news right now. And lets take a listen to that sound. Is there a political upshot to the Trump Administrations tone on the caravan coming up absolutely not. And listen, we are a country that our strength has always been that we are a tolerant country, that we are welcoming in particular of those who have fled harm. And the idea that were vilifying any one group and the fearmongering, thats not in the best interest of our country. What our people want and the people of our country want is we want leaders who are focused on the challenges they want every day, like, can they put food on the table and pay the bills by the end of the month consistently every month of the year. Those are the priorities they want us to have. Not vilifying something for the sake of fearmongering and politics. What about saudi arabia . Saudi arabia, listen, by all accounts, that man was murdered. And he was a journalist and we cannot support any system that would allow a journalist to be killed because you dont like what he says. So that was Kamala Harris, talking about saudi arabia, of course, and the caravan issue. Not really taking on trump in an aggressive way yet, but headed in that direction. Talking about how she feels that we are, as a nation, this is not who we want to be. Thats what she said today, as she was speaking to college students. Really encouraging them to get out and vote, to make sure that thirty better represented in washington, erica. Maeve reston, live for us in iowa this hour. Maeve, thank you. Early voting kicks off today in texas. And the white house, of course, paying very close attention to one of the countrys most Contentious Senate races. President trump hosting a rally for one of those candidates, his former rival, senator ted cruz. Cnns ed lavendera is in texas, where there has been some pretty remarkable early voter turnout, as i understand it, ed . Hawai, erica. Well, you know, across the state, you could probably do well by sending bottles of pepto bismol to Political Consultants all across the state as theyre trying to figure out what exactly all of this means. Were at one polling location here in the city of dallas, where people here ive been speaking to for the last few minutes tell me that they have voted here for many, many years and they have never seen lines like this, even in president ial election years, at the beginning of early voting. Most people here have been telling me that theyve been waiting 30 to 45 minutes in line to cast their ballot here in the initial hours of the early voting period. And were seeing this play out, erica, across the state, not just here in dallas, but also in houston, as well. Where donald trump is scheduled to speak with ted cruz tonight. And that is where the Democratic Senate challenger, beto orourke, has been campaigning in the same city throughout the day, crisscrossing the city, trying to get people out to vote, but voters here tell me theres a great deal of enthusiasm and interest in this election. Of course, we dont know exactly what it all means at this point, and thats what everyone here across the state will be trying to figure out throughout the rest of the next three weeks. Early voting starts today across the state and all of this pushing toward election day. In this state, erica, the majority of people have voted early before election day. So thats also something that these candidates across the state are keeping in mind as well. Erica . Yeah, a 15day supply of that pepto bismol, ed, thank you. More now on that ringing inperson endorsement today from the president today for senator ted cruz, who apparently is putting moments like this behind him. Lyin apostrowfe, lyin ted. Hes a narcissist. Nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him. Donald does one of four things, he yells, he screams, he curses or he insults. I think hes crazy. Honestly, i think hes crazy. Donald, youre a sniveling coward and leave heidi the hell alone. Just a little, you know, trip down memory lane for you. So when we watch these two share a stage tonight, what will happen . Jim acosta certainly saw his fair share of that rivalry during the 2016 campaign. Number one, great to see you in person. You, too. First of all, theres a lot of back and forth, lyin ted, and ted cruz push back, but at the end of the day, this is politics and these are two men who want to get things done. Should we be that surprised . And apparently a few moments ago, the president , when he was on his way out to this rally in houston, he was asked about ted cruz and now he says ted cruz is beautiful ted, according to the pool reports that are coming out from the White House Press corps who were there for this departure. Listen, this is all politics, of course. I remember during the campaign when ted cruz was at the Republican National convention, almost trying to slam the brakes on a donald trump nomination. But, you know, what donald trump has found is that hays got a front in ted cruz when it comes to keeping the senate in the republican column. Weve seen this over the last several weeks. The president , as people are deeply worried about the senate flipping blue, going democrat. Because potentially you would have a house and a senate that could not only log jam his agenda, they can, you know, hold hearings into all sorts of things that are going on, inside the white house. They can subpoena top members of his administration. They can launch investigations and potentially, they could try to impeach him and remove him from office. Not that any of those things are going to happen, but those are scenarios that have been cycling through the minds of various trump advisers for the last several weeks. We know weve talked to them. I will tell you, though, erica, having talked to a trump supporter and a source close to the white house earlier this morning, they are confident this caravan issue and the Brett Kavanaugh issue have both supercharged their voters and may actually eke out a victory in the house, if you believe them. Thats what theyre thinking inside the white house right now. So im glad you brought that up. When we look at the caravan, the president putting out some factually challenged, as we know, comments about this caravan. This has become a major talking point. The president selling it as if there are thousands of migrants knocking on the door of the United States, which we know is not the case. They are still just above the border between mexico and guatemala. But its working. Is it working at these rallies in addition to you say they really feel like this is going to turn people out . They do. First of all, when President Trump sees hispanics, he sees panic and thats essentially what hes trying to sow at these rallies. Hes trying to make the case that if these migrants get into the country, theyre going to be and the president just said this to reporters. He said, if these migrants make it into the country, youll find that many of them are with ms13, the violent gang we hear about so much. He even said again a few moments ago, quote unquote, middle easterners are among these migrants. The white house has offered no proof of this. It apparently is tide to some segment he saw on fox earlier this morning or something along those lines. Its the same thing he tweeted they have a lot of those in that group, its a horrible thing. And its a lot bigger than 5,000 people and weve got to stop them at the border. And unfortunately, you look at the countries, they have not done their job, unfortunately, they have not done their job. [ inaudible question ] guatemala, honduras, el salvador, theyre paid a lot of money every year. We give them foreign aid. And they did nothing for us. Nothing. They did nothing for us. So we give them tremendous amounts of money. You know what it is . You cover it all the time. Hundreds of millions of dollars. They, like a lot of others, do nothing for our country. [ inaudible question ] i have. I spoke to the crowned prince. We have people over in saudi arabia now. We have top intelligence people in turkey. Were going to see what we have. Ill know a lot tomorrow. Theyll be coming back either tonight or tomorrow morning. But we have people in saudi arabia and people in turkey. [ inaudible question ] i think thats a long time. You said you said they want a month . Thats a long time. Theres no reason for that much. What about your promise [ inaudible ] . Were looking at it. We have a lot of different concepts right now. They have a lot of Different Things happening with respect to transgender right now. You know that as well as i do. And were looking at it very seriously. Im protecting everybody. You know what im doing . Im protecting everybody. I want to protect our country. [ inaudible question ] oh, i think he has. I think its going to be. I think they wanted to see that im on his side and i am 100 . We have i mean, you people have been reporting, over 100,000 people. They lined up two days ago and its very exciting. But why does ted cruz need your help . Oh, i think ted will be a big factor tonight. Hes going to get up, hes going to make a great speech. Im going to get up, im going to make a great speech. Are most of you going . Youre not going . I cant believe it. Youre not going to be there tonight. Thats terrible. [ inaudible question ] beto orourke is now calling him lyin ted. You started that. I think beto orourke is highly overrated. When i heard about him, i thought he must be something special, hes not. I think hes a highly overrated guy. [ inaudible question ] say it . Have you buried the hatchet with senator cruz . Oh, i have. Ted and i get along very well. Very late into the campaign, i said, dont worry about it, its only a question of time, and then it became very nasty, and then it was over. And when it was over, weve gotten along great. No, i like ted. If you remember, he was the last one that we really had i mean, i went very late into the campaign. We actually held a rally together late into the campaign. I said, it will end. And it did. And then i got back. Were very close. Weve done great on tax cuts. Weve done great on regulation cuts. Hes been really terrific. And if you look at whats happening in germany with respect to the pipeline, they want to now start buying our natural gas. It just came out. So take a look at that. So is he no longer lyin ted . Hes not lyin ted anymore. Hes beautiful ted. I call him texas ted. Ted cruz and i had a very, very nasty and tough campaign. It was a very competitive it was a very tough campaign. Once it ended and we got together and by the way, very late into the campaign, we people were shocked. I said, dont worry. And ultimately, wlahat happened we fought it out, the outcome was obvious. And we have worked together very closely. I like him a lot. I actually like him a lot. And hes a very smart guy. He loves the people of texas, which i do. And in fact, right now, i guess they said theyve never seen its like a big tailgate. It goes on for miles. [ inaudible question ] i think her husband is not much better, i think nelly orr is a disgrace, taking marital protection, so she doesnt have to talk about corruption. I think shes a disgrace. [ inaudible question ] look, i cant tell you. I can only tell you this. We give them hundreds of millions of dollars. They do nothing for us. [ inaudible question ] maybe it will, maybe it wont. They can do a lot better job. If you look at the three countries in particular, and im not sure whats going on with mexico. I guess it looks like the people are walking right through the middle of mexico, so im not exactly thrilled there either. [ inaudible question [ inaudible question ] a great group of people in turkey right now and a great group of people in saudi arabia. We will know very soon. We have tremendously talented people that do this very well. Theyre coming back tonight and tomorrow and i will know very soon. And i am not satisfied with what i heard. [ inaudible question ] i agree with rand on a lot of things. I dont want to lose a million jobs, i dont want to lose 110 million. But its really 450 billion if you include other than military. So thats very important. But anyway, were going to get to the bottom of it. The new mexican president said he wants to work with you [ inaudible ]. Im looking to make America Great again. Im making America Great again. We have been giving so much money to so many great countries, its called make America Great again. You said you want tax cuts by no, no, were putting in a resolution sometimes in the next week and a half or two weeks. A resolution where . Were giving a middle income tax reduction of about 10 , were doing it now, for middleincome people. This is not for business. This is for middle. Thats on top of the tax decrease that weve already given. Are you signing an executive order for that . No, no. Im going through congress. We wont have time to do the vote. Well do the vote later. Well do the vote after the election. [ inaudible question ] whats your level of confidence for holding on to the house . I think theres tremendous spirit. Maybe other than 16 you dont remember 16, youre too young. I have never seen spirit like the spirit that we have right now, except the week before the race, the president ial race two years ago. I think the republicans are going to do very nicely. Were doing very well with the senate and he was just asking about the race. Other than two years ago, the president ial race, i have never seen spirit like i see right now. I think the republicans are going to do very well. People are tired of tying thigh. Weve done the tax cuts, so much. They want a strong military, they want safety, they want security. We give that. The democrats do not give that. The democrats dont know what theyre doing. They dont know what theyre giving. I think were going to do very, very well in the race. Yeah . Do you regret [ inaudible ] . I dont regret anything, honestly. It all worked out very nicely. You said californians were rioting over the sanctuary cities. Where . You shouldnt have take a look. They want to get out of sanctuary cities. Many places in california want to get out of sanctuary cities. [ inaudible question ] yeah, it is rioting in some case. Where are the riots, sir . [ inaudible question ] whos an activist . [ inaudible question ] well, im going to have to find out. Were going to find out a lot. Were going to know a lot over the next two days about the saudi situation. To the middle of the caravan, take your cameras and search, okay . Take your camera wit, go into t middle and search. Youre going to find ms13, youre going to find middle eastern, youre going to find everything. And guess what, were not allowing the them in our countr country. Mr. President , are you developing more Nuclear Weapons, sir . [ inaudible question ] i have never i think the republicans i have never seen spirit ill tell you a big factor of whats happening on the border. Whats happening on the border was caused by the democrats, because they wont let anybody change immigration laws that are horrible. But republicans have got control, mr. President [ inaudible ] lets see what happens. But ill know a lot in a few days. Ill see you in texas. Mr. President , on the arms treaty, mr. President , are you prepared to build up the u. S. Nuclear arsenal. Until people come to their senses, we will build it up. Until people come to their senses, russia has not adhered to the agreement. This should have been done years ago. Until people come to their senses, we have more money than anybody else by far. Well build it up. Until they come to their senses. When they do, then well all be smart and well all stop. And by the way, not only stop, well reduce, which i would love to do. But right now, they have not adhered to the agreement. Is that a threat to Vladimir Putin . Its a threat to whoever you want. And it includes china. And it includes russia. And it includes anybody else that wants to play that game. You cant do that. You cant play that game on me. Are you actually going to withdraw or [ inaudible ] . Until they get smart. They have not adhered to the spirit of that agreement or to the agreement itself. Russia. Chinas not included in the agreement. They should be included in the agreement. Until they get smart, there will be nobody thats going to be even close to us. Have you talked to your allies . I have not. I dont have to i dont have to im terminating the agreement. Because they violated the agreement. Im terminating the agreement. When . Youre going to build more Nuclear Weapons [ inaudible ] . President trump there covering a lot before boarding before making his way, of course walking out there, i would imagine, and will make his way to texas, where, of course, is the going to be at this rally in support of ted cruz tonight. Jim acosta is with us here in studio. A couple things i want to pick up on. Hes continuing to drill down on his idea of what is happening, not only at the border or far below the border. The president saying its much bigger than 5,000. Hes right on that. Because our most recent reporting is that were now talking about a caravan of some 7,500 people. But what he continued to drill down on is, he said, theres middle easterners in this caravan. If you go to the middle of the caravan and search, in five to ten minutes youll find them. I should point out, our reporters have been there for days talking to folks and have yet to meet anybody from the middle east. And its unclear what he believes would happen if there were a middle easterners in this caravan of folks thats still a the far cry from the u. S. Southern border. And i talked to somebody this morning who said this caravan issue doesnt need any additional messaging. They dont need to go get their surrogates fired up this caravan, because they think it plays so strongly to the trump base. But you have a situation where the president is playing fast and loose with the facts. The white house up until this point has put out no evidence, no proof that there are any middle easterners in that caravan. And it just goes to the way he has been trying to demonize immigrants throughout this whole process. Hes been doing this really since day one, since he ran for office. And erica, i think this is a big challenge for ted cruz. Lets keep in mind, he is a latino. And he is going to be standing with President Trump at this rally tonight, and here you have the president of the United States demonizing thousands of migrants coming towards this border. They have effectively shut down the border to Asylum Seekers and refugees and so on, who many of these people would potentially qualify for that kind of status. And you have to wonder, what is going through ted cruzs mind . Because he has, from time to time, said that some of this rhetoric is unacceptable, and i have to wonder in the waning days of this campaign, i have to think hes going to be asked this question. How can you stand there with the president being of latino descent, while he is going off on these migrants and describing them as ms13, unknown middle easterners with, and so on . Weve seen the pictures. There are pictures of babies and little kids. And weve heard the reporting from our colleagues who are there on the ground, who have spoken to these people. Just last hour, the majority of people ive spoken to are honduran. You know, they are trying to find a better life. And the president trying to make the case theyre violent people. Theyre escaping violence. Thats why theyre many of them, are coming this way. A lot more to unpack there, including the president bringing up this 10 tax reduction, he says, for middle income earners. He says hes going to get it through congress after the election. So i guess that clears up one little tidbit. Thats true. And its interesting, just so people understand, there is sensitivity in the white house that the tax cut package he signed into law was too heavily weighted towards the upper, you know, billionaire classes of the country, in that it was not weighted enough towards middle class people. And that is part of the reason, i think, why the president is talking about this. He understands, this is a liability, not perhaps right now, going into the midterms, but heading into 2020, and hes trying to address that liability. Maybe some of that going on with his talk about the arms treaty with the russians. They know thats a liability inside the white house, the way people perceive the president as being too week when it comes to russia. It sounds as though the president is trying to address some of these liabilities to lay the groundwork for the next couple of years to come. Jim acosta, great to have you with us. Talk about good timing, you were here when we needed you, as always. You got it. Just ahead, Fareed Zakaria is with us next, reacting to the president s remarks on the saudisaudi s, because President Trump also weighing in on that. And this just in, National Security adviser john bolton telling the rnks russians in m meddling didnt have any real effect. Well discuss. Hi im joan lunden. President trump saying he is not yet satisfied with the explanation from saudi arabia about the murder of a washington pos washington pos washington pos Washington Post columnist. And it comes after footage shows a possible coverup. Footage shows a body double leaving the saudi consulate in turkey on the day he disappeared. Turkish Officials Say the man is a saudi operative dressed in a beard and what appears to be the murdered journalists clothing, except for the shoes. Joining me now is freed areed a zakaria. There have been shifting stories from the very beginning, as we know, but this video is really something. Turkish Officials Say they believe this shows it was premeditation. How does this now figure into where were at . I think the most important thing thats going to happen is going to happen tomorrow when the turkish president , erdogan, is going to make a speech in parliament. And he has promised hes going to lay out, in detail, exactly what happened. Whats fascinating about this is that many people thought that the turks were just presenting enough evidence to embarrass saudi arabia, to then extract some kind of price in terms of loans, payments, and its certainly that the turkish economy needs that. But erdogan has now gone far enough that i think it would be very difficult for him to back down. He is suggesting hes going to present an alternative view from the saudi view. If that happens, since turkey has incontrovertible intelligence, i think it would be very hard for the Trump Administration to continue with what has been the essentially prosaudi view, endorsing some of the saudi version of events. And you can see President Trump, as he often does, beginning to distance himself, essentially from his own comments of only four or five days ago. So it suggests that everybodys beginning to recognize the saudi explanation is not going to hold water. The other thing thats fascinating, it was just over a week ago that the president said on 60 minutes that there would be severe punishment. Can you have severe punishment from the u. S. To saudi arabia while still maintaining this relationship, which we know is very important, not just to the country, but the President Trump himself . Can you have both moving forward . You can. I think you need a more skilled Foreign Policy than President Trump is currently demonstrating, but i give you an analogy. Tiananmen square. This was the chinese brutal crackdown on student protests, prodemocracy protests that took place in 1991, i think it was. And when President Trump, the elderly, confronted this, he immediately condemned it. He slapped sanctions on the chinese, but then a little bit later, i think it was a month later, he sent his National Security adviser to beijing and said, we want to maintain the relationship. This is an important strategic relationship. But what you guys did was wrong, and we have to call you out on it. So i think that the mistake here is to try to, in some sense, collude with the saudi coverup. I think that the United States needs to be very clear and strong, that we need complete transparency. We want the facts. This is what appears to have happened. And if it is, in fact, a brutal premeditated dismemberment and murder of a journalist, it has to be condemned and they have to be some kind of punishment. Then you can moua on and say, okay, you know, this relationship is important. Were past this point. The Trump Administration is almost simultaneously doing both colluding and then talking about punishments and mixing it all together, so what you get is incoherence rather than a strategy that suggests that theres a punishment and yet the relationship is important. There was certainly a lot of confusion. You used the word transparent, transparency. Earlier today, Jared Kushner, who very rarely, if ever, is sitting down for an interview and talking on camera told van jones that his advice to crowned prince mohammad bin salman that he needed to be transparent. That transparency was key here and the world was watching. That made my ears perk up. Because we have Jared Kushner saying, yes, im talking to him and heres what i told him. Is Jared Kushner the right messenger . Well, Jared Kushner is the right messenger in the sense that the crowned prince knows him, trusts him, he is the president s soninlaw. Look, family relationships do matter. One can pretend they dont. He is in the white house. But the key is, im not to really drive home that point of transparency, because otherwise it becomes an orwellian message, by which i mean, the saudis know what happened. They planned it, they directed it. From every account we can get, this is not some operation that went awry, the operation went as planned. What went awry was the public reaction to it. That was not what they expected. And so, now theyre trying to come forward with some story to tell the crowned prince, find out what happened. Thats nonsense. To have him lead the investigation. Exactly. Tell us the truth might be, you know, the better advice would be, come clean, explain what happened, at that point, you can move on better than if you continue to insist on an orwellian coverup. And were seeing i mean, a bone saw, a body double. A man sent there who was the head of the Saudi Council on forensics, who authored an article called mobile autopsies. You couldnt write this into a movie. This guys specialty was cutting up bodies, you know, on the run, in a mobile fashion. Absolutely. I do want to get your take on this. We know john bolton is in russia. The president was just making a comments a short time ago before leaving for texas about pulling out of the inf treaty for russia. Were also learning that interference in the u. S. Election didnt have any real effect, but went on to say the entire to interfere really caused distrust. What do you make of those comments . I think on both fronts, bolton is presenting a tough intelligence line. I think on the treaty, its a negotiating ploy. I think the idea is to try to get attention of the russians, they have been violating the treaty for a while. There are people who feel this is the wrong way to go about it, but i think here you see trump, as on trade, trying something more dramatic than others have tried, where there is a legitimate grievance. On the russian interference of the elections, that is exactly the message that President Trump should have delivered on day one. And if he had delivered that message on day one, which is, we dont think it made a difference. We think President Trump would have won anyway, which they have to say, of course, but this is a huge problem that you did it and you know, we the relationship cannot survive if you continue to try these kind of interferences, that is what the president should have said from day one. If he had said that from day one, nobody would be sitting here talking about, why is the president being so soft on russia. Why is he giving them a pass . Why doesnt he want to admit it . You see, he took that issue off the table. And if they had done it from the start, they would be in a much better place than they are today. Freed, always good to have you with us. Pleasure.
