Mulvaneys bombshell cap as week full of them. Pause for a moment and take in just how bad it has been for President Trump since this week began. On monday in testimony part of the impeachment inquiry. Trumps personal attorney Rudy Giuliani is called a hand grenade for his shadow Foreign Policy in ukraine. The same day longtime u. S. Ally the kurds work with syria after trump failed to stop turkeys advance into the wardorn nation. Tuesday, grieving parents from the uk say President Trump ambushed them at the white house with the American Woman accused of running over and killing their son. Wednesday, President Trump has a recorded meltdown at a meeting over syria with an effort to smear nancy pelosi backfiring. She ends up using his photo of her on her twitter page. Then just yesterday comes the admission from the president s righthand man that the u. S. Withheld hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid that the congress appropriated in order to push ukraine to conduct specific investigations. Cnns Sarah Westwood joins us from the white house. Sarah, talk to us about the fallout, that mulvaney may face for comments hes since walked back. Any concerns he may be subpoenaed in this impeachment inquiry now . Reporter acting chief of staff mulvaney already received a subpoena from House Democrats way back on october 4th. Well before that press conference yesterday and actually the deadline for that subpoena is today. Democrats certainly are scrutinizing what they heard from mulvaney yesterday. Sources tell cnn white house aides and attorneys were baffled by what they saw from the acting chief of staff in the Briefing Room yesterday. The aides had prepared mulvaney to go out and have a briefing on the announcement that next years g7 summit would be held at the president s doral, florida property. He was not necessarily prepared by those aides to answer the question at the heart of the impeachment proceedings, whether the president s decision to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in Security Assistance to ukraine was politically motivated. Whether it was motivated by his desire to see ukraine conduct investigations politically advantageous to him. Mulvaney confirming that. Now President Trump was asked by our colleague jim acosta today about this, and he said he thought mulvaney had already clarified what he said yesterday, and indeed yesterday white house aides realized pretty quickly what mulvaney had said was problematic. Huddled, hours tried to backtrack there was a quid pro quo at the center of the president s dealings with the ukrainian president and of course damage there already largely done. Justant contradicting weeks of the president himself and his allies denies there was ever any quid pro quo and denining allegations wore withholding that aid were political. Westwood at the white house. Thank you. And a former or current member of the Trump Administration is going before the house and after learning their testimony its not only trump facing added scrutiny. Also secretary of state mike pompeo whos getting blamed for failing to act when his ambassador to ukraine Marie Yovanovitch was forced out as part of giulianis shadow Foreign Policy in ukraine, according to testimony. Cnn National Security reporter kylie atwood is here with the story on pompeo. Kylie, hes frustrated. Tell us why. Reporter in the past few weeks secretary pompeo has gotten increasingly frustrated as this ukrainian impeachment inquiry heated up. A number of reasons. First of which is that two Senior State Department officials have resigned in the recent weeks. Close to secretary pompeo. He thought both of them were doing a good job. He was frustrated that they both left and also frustrated, because hes get ing creacreasi secret sim saying he hasnt done enough to defend the u. S. Ambassador to ukraine, ambassador yovanovitch. The thing here, even though frustrated hes tried to distance himself from this writ at large. Seen him traveling keeping up, a continued busy schedule. Visiting italy, visiting with the pope when kurt volker testified. Current ambassador on the with pen. H pence and doesnt want to get intimately involved in the situation and has done a number of interviews but avoids the specific questions. He was asked if he has done enough to defend ambassador yovanovitch. He avoided that question, but as these officials go up to the hill and give their testimony, hes being drawn in to this it controversy more and more. Ambassador sondland said he had just in recent weeks received a note from secretary pompeo saying he was doing a good job and should keep it up. We know secretary pompeo was involved and we dont have evidence that he set up guardrails to defend between the secretary, the state department and what they were doing and what Rudy Giuliani was doing, and that is a real key question here as we learn more about the efforts of Rudy Giuliani and how the state department was dragged right into that. Theres so much we continue to learn, kylie atwood thank you for that reporting. Talk to an impeachment expert, guy smith, special adviser to president clinton during his impeachment. Thank you, guy, for being an expert and voice and giving perspective what were learning. Thank you. This week has been fascinating. The administration went from absolutely no quid pro quo to the acting white house chief of staff admitting there was a quid pro quo when it came to 2016 and the Democratic Party and inan investigation into all that to then him walking it back to us learning the white house was unhappy with his performance out there. Is it time to start a war room . Yes. I mean, this illustrates perfectly that theres no one in charge. No one knows what theyre doing. Talk about a gang that cant shoot straight. This is ill this illustrates what is happening, which is all the wrong things. Like giuliani with chris cuomo the week before last. 30 seconds he changes his story. Mulvaney changes it within an hour afterwards. Whats going to happen tonight or tomorrow . This shows theyre not prepared. The real danger in addition to not being prepared their 100 jurors, the United States senate, and think about the republican senators. For months everybody said, oh, the republican senators going to protect him. Theyll not convict him, but all of a sudden there are lots of senators that are seeing polls at home and all getting questions from real people in their states. Is this okay . Of course, its not okay. The other thing is, Mitch Mcconnell, ice running through his veins. If he thinks hes going to lose his Senate Majority hell throw trump under the bus in a heartbeat. What do you think of that . Because of your experience i want to ask you again how the white house is handling what they are facing, and were hearing that Mick Mulvaney was prepped before going out there, although not maybe necessarily to talk so much about ukraine. More on the trump doral g7 summit. We also know that apparently trumps legal team has, you know, distanced itself from Mick Mulvaneys comments. What do you think they pull mulvaney out there in the first place . Defend this silliness with doral and thats another impeachment defense. The immollments clause, but what happens is, when theres no discipline and nobody in charge of the specific thing, impeachment, then what his answer should have been is, im talking about the doral period and the discussion, all im here to talk about, and leave. Instead he just kept running his mouth, and we see what happened. Do you think that they thought, like, ooh. This is a Good Opportunity to test a new defense of some sort . Just say it was all about the, the quid pro quo all about 2016 and the dnc server . A lot of us keep trying to search for a strategy. Sadly, i dont think theres a strategy. I think theyre just playing it by the seat of their pants. I mean, if the Legal Counsel doesnt flow about it, the Justice Department says, news to us. The press office to the extent there is a press office, the president didnt know about it, and hes the only communicator theyve got. He didnt hes not tweeting about it. You mentioned the senate, and the republicans in the senate being, again, the ultimate jurors. Right. If the house impeaches the president it lands there. I just spoke to john kasich, former governor of ohio, republican, who says hes there when it comes to impeachment. Listen. If youre asking me if i was sitting in the house of representatives today and you were to ask me how do i feel . Do i think impeachment shot move forward and go for a full examination and the trial in the United States senate, my vote would be yes and i dont say it lightly. This is extremely difficult for me but its what i feel i have to do. Its what my conscious tells me. You cant operate like this, and withhold vital military aid for somebody because youre involved in some sort of a political examine aches or pressure on a Foreign Government to do this. Its inappropriate. And yet he still stopped short of saying he wants trump forced from office. What do you think it would take for republicans to get there . To be threatened politically. If Mitch Mcconnell suddenly thinks amy mcgrath, his opponent in kentucky, might win, and hes threatened because of this. And what will happen, and were seeing it in the polls. Right. Its the drip, drip, drip show in the polls. In favor of impeachment going up, up, up. Right. Gallup poll this week, majority of people now are supporting impeachment. 52 to 46 . Right. Trumps approval is not improving. His disapproval, more people are disapproving. The dang other for trump and th republican senators are women and independents in suburbs. Now if youre in a red state and not up for reelection, then at some point youre going to look in the mirror and say, is this really okay . Is this the way did i get elected to protect somebody whos destroying the constitution . Right in front of our eyes . Theyre not even pretending. Nixon tried to hide it. These guys arent even trying to hide it. See what happens. Guy smith, thank you for your wisdom. Breaking news on the crisis in syria. President trump says the fiveday pause is back on after shelling an gunfire earlier today. The reality from the ground. Plus, the mayor of doral, florida, joins us after the white house says President Trumps own resort there in doral will host the g7 summit. And why Hillary Clinton appears to suggest russians are grooming Tulsi Gabbard for a thirdparty run. The calming scent of lavender by downy infusions calm. President trump says not a single drop of blood has bp spilled since his socalled ceasefire it deal with turkey went into effect 24 hours ago, i just spoke to president erdogan of turkey. Were doing very, very well with turkey. Theres a ceasefire or a pause or whatever you want to call it. There was some sniper fire this morning. There was mortar fire this morning that was eliminated quickly. And theyre back to the full pause. He said that in response to reports of smoke that was seen rising above Northern Syria in a city and while the white house call it is a ceasefire turkey says this is only a fiveday pause to allow remaining kurdish fighters to leave that region. Many of the president s critics have said he doesnt seem to understand the betrayal that the Kurdish People must feel after u. S. Troops were withdrawn from Northern Syria but expressed loyal support in the past. Heres a look back what seems to be now an evolution of the president s stance on kurdish fighters. We do get along great with the kurdish. Trying to help them a lot. Dont forget. Thats their territory. We have to help them. They fought with us. Fought with us. Died with us. They died we lost tens of thousands of kurds died fighting isis. They died for us, and with us, and for themselves. We want to protect the kurds nevertheless. We want to protect the kurds, but i dont want to be in syria forever. Its sad. And its deathants why are we protecting syrias land . Assads not a friend of ours. Why are we protecting their land . And syria also has a relationship with the kurds. Who, by the way, are no angels. Okay . So you have a 22mile strip that for many, many years turkey and in all fairness had a legitimate problem with it. They had terrorists, they had a lot of people in there they couldnt have. Theyve suffered a lot of loss of lives also, and they had to have it cleaned out. Sometimes you have to let them fight. Like two kids in a lot, youve got to let them fight and then you pull them apart. And contributing eder tore Atlantic Media defense one and a new book out soon about syria. That last bit of sound we just heard from the president was last night, whats taken place in the last several days. 750,000 soldiers, the turkish and kurds 20,000. Yet comparing it to a school yard brawl. Your reaction . These are the folks that fought alongside the United States to defeat extremism, and i know the president and administration is focused on fighting the Islamic State and more than 10,000 of their own forces died fighting alongside the United States. While every gold star family is tragic, in the fight against isis inside syria, fewer than five u. S. Combat deaths in that fight. Because the Partner Force these folks were talking about now took the brunt of that and the question is, how do you protect those people and how do you keep the pressure on the islamic sta state . I had the privilege seeing that area a lot in the past two years and meeting so many young women who led the fight against extremism and against the Islamic State from arab backgrounds, christian background, kurdish backgrounds and those young women will pay the price first if you talk about what happens if the pressure goes off the Islamic State. Pictures you took while there. Whats going their their minds right now, do you think . Its been such a hard ten days, ana. Talking to folks trying to understand be what comes next for their families. Right . These are people, some trying to figure out who among the isis families could be returned home, if their nations would take them and who among the isis family was a hardcore extreme ittist believer . And these now have to protect their own families because of the turkish incursion. I urge folks to think how do you get back to the negotiating table . How do you get folks to talk about a deal . How do you really protect the folks who fought against isis from air power, from the turkish side . Did turkey get everything they wanted out of this deal . I was talking 0 a young man who has been, you know, a tremendous voice for stability and security in this area. You know, he said, look, were happy because we werent mass kurred but its tragic it came to this. So, yes, there is a sense that turkey got a great deal and one dad said to me, we fought isis. Weve tried to protect our territory and now people are calling us terrorists. Yeah. Thanks for the perspective. Thank you. President trump is also under fire for planning the g7 summit at his own resort in doral, florida. Its a first. The president of the United States using his office to bring a contract for major event to one of his own properties. President trumps golf resort in the doral, florida, near miami will host World Leaders for next year the g7 summit. Cnn learned the resort was not even on the initial suggested list of venues because of ethics concerns but the white house signed off on it despite the optics and the president s acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said its not a conflict of interests. Listen, i was skeptical. I was. I was aware of the political sort of criticism wed come under for doing in at doral, why i was so surprised when the advance team called back saying this was the perfect physical location to do this. I get the criticisms, so does he. The president would be criticized regardless what he decided to do. No way for him to profit from this in any way, shape or form. And joining us, the mayor from doral. You were told about this decision from where and how did you first find out . Thanks for the opportunity to be here with you. We were advised back in june there was a possibility of the event taking place at the Trump National doral. Obviously, i really found out yesterday when it was announced. More or less during that press conference . During the press conference. Probably when somebody called me about the press conference. But we were, to be fair, told back in june by the administration there was a possibility that it would be in doral, and we did find out yesterday. What was your reaction when you heard . Upset you werent told sooner . Well, look. You know, im very happy its taking place in doral. I since have spoke ton somebody in inner Governmental Affairs in the white house later on yesterday and would have appreciated being given a bit of a heads up, but having said that, you know, its a great opportunity for the city of doral and one of the newest, most vibrant cities in the country. Were 16 years old and its a great opportunity for us and for miamidade count toy make sure this event is a success, because it will bring World Leaders not just the president but six other World Leaders to our city. So youre for this . Yes. I am support. Yes, i am. Do you see any ethical conflict of interest issues here . Well, you know, ana, its that i leave to to people in washington from both parties. I think that thats a discussion that i think hasnt been finished, and im sure its not going to be finished anytime soon. I look at it as a mayor from the perspective and its funny, in all of these debates we have across the country, from both parties, i think that mayors are in a position we just have to get the job done. We talk about that all the time at the u. S. Conference of mayors where i am on the advisory board, and thats the way i approach this. Im in a nonpartisan position and i basically look at this as, if its going to take place in doral its my responsibility, our responsibility, to make sure we work with Miamidade County and other intergovernmental agencies to make sure this event is as successful at possible. Right. I leave those decisionmaking issues to those in d. C. But youre an elected official. Im sure you can think about it through that lens. The president here is lining his own pockets with taxpayer money and than of Foreign Governments. You dont see an issue with that . Well, look. Ive had some residence reached out to me from both sides and as ive told both residents, i think both sides, there is a process, and as i understand it, theres still a process being looked into as to whether or not this actually will eventually be able to take place where its planned which is in doral, which wed love to see it happen. You know, ethics is something that is very important in government. Its one of the reasons americans by the way, this is not an issue just that applies to our president. It is applied to the prior president and president s before that. I think we as americans have to make sure that the rules are followed, and there is a process. And i could see where some people feel there is an issue. Some of my residents expressed that point of view and i understand that point of view. The way i look at it, its my responsibility if the taking place in doral, which i was not part of that process, to make sure that people are safe, that the visitors that come and our residents are bothered as little as possible and that the event goes off successfully. It gives us an opportunity as a city much like it gives south florida and Miamidade County, even the United States, an opportunity to show an area that may be other were not aware is a great area to live, work, play and learn in. Talk about the impact to your city and to the economy there. The Washington Post has been reporting doral has been losing revenue. This resort specifically. That also raises questions about the selection. Doesnt it . Has it been losing money . Yeah. I think, look, i think that the resort is, you know, its not a secret even the 50year Golf Tournament one of the longest running sporting events that took place at the resort was moved due to obviously what may have been political differences or issues. It certainly is an issue, but as a signature property, you know, the name of the city comes from doral resort. Doris and al fred casskel went out to west dade way back in the late 50s and built this beautiful resort and i think that for me, again, the most important thing is make sure that this succeeds and goes off without a hitch. If possible. You know, i dont we would love to see the resort be a success. Im not privy to their information as to whether theyre Getting Better or worse due to whatever the president s positions are. But i think all of us, regardless of Party Affiliation in doral and regardless whether this event takes place in doral or not believe the resort is the signature property in our city or one of the Signature Properties because we have the United States southern command, large corporations like carnival and univision, but we believe wed like to certainly have it succeed. Right. Mayor, thank you for joining us. Thank you, ana. Two retired fourstar military officers speaking out about President Trump. One used wit. The other the written word. Both with the same idea. Their message up next. And why Hillary Clinton appears to suggest russians are grooming congresswoman and 2020 candidate Tulsi Gabbard for a possible third party run. As a cio, you want to move your business forward. But when your team is always dealing with device setups, app updates, and support calls. You can never seem to get anywhere. Thats why Dell Technologies created unified workspace, powered by vmware. A revolutionary solution that lets you deploy, manage, support and secure all your devices from the cloud. So you can stop going in circles, and start moving forward. Hillary clinton says russia is planning Something Big for the 2020 election. She says theyve already got an eye on a democratic candidate to back as a third Party Challenger. In a podcast with former Obama Campaign manager David Plouffe she called out jill stein saying shes a total russian asset and called President TrumpVladimir Putins dream. Cnns dan merica is with us now. What is she saying about russia grooming someone for 2020 . She doesnt sap the persons name but it doesnt take a detective shes referring to Tulsi Gabbard. The hawaii congresswoman with accusations leveled against her in the past. Experts say gabbard has been covered more by certain russia propaganda arms and moments of her campaign trumpeted by bots and trolls on twitter that have tied to russia. Gaddard vociferously denied claims on the debate stage earlier this week, called them smears and notably on cnn ruled out a third Party Challenge. Take a listen to what Hillary Clinton had to say about gabbard and stein in this podcast interview. Theyre also going to do third party, and im not making any predictions, but i think theyve got their eye on somebody whos currently in the democratic primary, and are grooming her to be the third party candidate. Shes a favorite of the russians. They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far. I will guarantee theyll have a vigorous third Party Challenge in the key states that they most need it. Ana, obviously this matters to Hillary Clinton because she feels stein hurt her in key states she lost in 2016. That that could happen again in 2020 to whoever the democratic nominee may be. But as somebody who covered Hillary Clintons 2016 campaign it is pretty shocking to me to hear her use these terms. Her campaign wasnt known for throwing caution to the wind. She certainly wasnt in 2016, and these comments about gabbard and stein certainly show shes doing that. Part of the reason, shes a former secretary of state. Cares a lot about issues dealing with russia, ukraine and meddling but also because she thinks 2020 is so important and doesnt want what she believes happened to her to happen again in 2020. Again, these comments in a recent interview with David Plouffe. Thank you for bringing that to us. Two top military brass came out same time against the commander in chief. One former secretary of Defense James Mattis cracking jokes in his critique. More in a moment. And retired Navy Admiral William Mcraven oversaw the bin laden raid taking a much more serious tone warning that President Trump is working to destroy the country. Yeah. If you want to destroy an organization, any organization, you destroy it from within. You destroy it from without, and then what you do, convince everybody that youre doing the right thing. So when you look at what the president has done, hes undermined the intelligence community, the Law Enforcement community, the department of justice, the state department. And with us now, who covers World Affairs as a cnn. Com contributor. Start with what we just heard from nick craven. When you heard him say that, how startling . Startling. Read the oped he wrote in the New York Times saying the republic is under attack from the oval office and concludes joust give you the spoiler, concludes by saying that trump has to be removed from office. Sort of really an extraordinary development, because military people in the United States even when they are retired are very reluctant to get involved very directly in politics. They are known for being, trying to take a step back and we saw that from general mattis. So this is really, really a change. And compare that to what were now hearing from general mattis. This was that alsmith Charity Dinner in new york. Im not just an overrated general. I am the greatest, the worlds most overrated. Im honored to be considered that by donald trump, because he also called meryl streep an overrated actress. So i guess im the meryl streep of generals. I earned my spurs on the battlefield, martin, as you pointed out and donald trump earned his spurs in a letter from a doctor. So there he is making fun of President Trump. More than weve heard from mattis on his former boss. It is. If you look at the commentary in twitter and on social media about this little barrage of jokes that mattis had at trumps expense, the commentary is from people saying, go harder. We need to hear more. Mattis has not wanted to attack trump. The strongest thing we heard from mattis when he resigned last december, he did it after trump said he wanted to move out of syria and mattis sent a letter in which he said that he disagreed with trump, particularly in his approach to americas friends and americas foes. That the United States needs to be very cleareyed, that the president needs to be cleareyed who are our friend and who are the maligned influences in the world. That lines up much more closely to what mcraven said. The United States is taking sides with the wrong people. We need to stand on the side of good, we did in the past and not doing it anymore. Right. Free frid fre frida, thank you for joining us. And the president asked rick perry to work with Rudy Giuliani on a pressure campaign. Heres the president s tweet today. I want to thank secretary of Energy Rick Perry for the outstanding job he has done. Hes leaving end of the year to pursue other interests. Rick was a great governor of text and a great secretary of state of energy, also my friend. At the same time i am pleased to nominate deputy secretary dan breette to be the new secretary of energy. Hes a total professional and no doubt dan will do a great job. The news who hes nominating to replace rick perry. Testified before congress this week in the impeachment inquiry said he voiced concerns in early 2015. About former Vice President joe bidens son hunter and his business ties to ukraine. According to the Washington Post citing familiar with the testify, he worried that Hunter Bidens work could undercut american efforts to avoid conflict of interest and kent claims he took the turns to the then Vice President office. President trump jumped on the reports about the testimony to again attack the bidens. But what just happened is ambassador kent, who i have never had the privilege i dont believe of meeting, i dont know him. He score the excoriated joe biden and has tremendous problems with joe bidens son and the ukraine. Abby phillip is covering the developments. What more do we know about what george kent said and how is joe biden responding. Reporter joe kent a Career State Department official as part of his deposition he talked about back in 2013 going to Vice President bidens office and telling a staffer not identified in this report that he had some concerns about what this looked like, about the optics of all of this. Kent said he believed that it would make it more difficult as you said for the u. S. To say to the ukrainians this appearance of a conflict of interest was something that they should avoid and also worried that ukrainian officials would view hunter biden as a conduit to his father joe biden. These concerns dont say that kent believed that there was, in fact, a conflict that hunter biden that hunter biden used his position to influence his father. But kent said that the biden official told him that joe biden was too preoccupied and and did have the bandwidth to deal with this because his other son beau biden was suffering from cancer and he later died in may of 2015, months after george kent raised these concerns. In response to all of this, here is what the bidens have to say. They are pivoting right back to donald trump saying this, Donald Trumps unprecedentedly corrupt administration is meltingdown because of the scandal he touched off by trying to get ukraine to lie about joe biden and as the Vice President said yesterday on wednesday, he should release his tax returns or shut up.
