Countries have closed their borders or imposed travel restrictions with the country. In japan, Prime Minister shinzo abe has announced the closure of all schools for roughly a month. The spike in cases in japan and south korea and italy has prompted the tsa to consider expanding Health Screenings at airports. Right now only passengers flying in from china are undergoing those screenings. All of this as the white house update on the u. S. Response causes confusion after President Trump contradicted Health Officials on everything from the timing of a vaccine to whether we will see a surge in cases. Our aggressive containment strategy here in the United States has been working, and is responsible for the low levels of cases that we have so far. However, we do expect more cases. I dont think its i dont think its inevitable. I think that theres a chance that it could get worse. Theres a chance it could get fairly substantially worse. Nothings inevitable. President trumps remarks prompted this reaction from speaker nancy pelosi. Unfortunately, up until now the Trump Administration has mounted an opaque and often chaotic response to this outbreak. Were coming close to a bipartisan agreement in the congress as to how we can go forward with a number that is a good start. We dont know how much we will need. Hopefully not much more because prevention will work, but nonetheless, we have to be ready to do what we need to do. As we watch the markets reacting to this virus, there is this grim warning from a wall street giant. Goldman sachs is warning that u. S. Companies will likely generate 0 Profit Growth this year because of the spread of the coronavirus. With me now is richard quest, your reaction to this dire prediction from goldman . Its extremely sobering because the number they were looking at before was 6 Earnings Growth off the tback o last year. This is a real live classic indication that this is not only going to probably get worse but also the tentacles through the various sectors of the economy. Travel and aviation, obviously, hospitality, but now weve got automobiles. Weve got food production, anywhere where there is either just in time supply from china or indeed now a slowdown from other economies such as asia, such as italy, south korea, and the like. So its multiplying, and its expanding. What about you mentioned air travel. Its already dramatically changing, you know, flights, cancellations, talk to me about that. So weve already got widespread pretty much universal cancellation of flights to china from western airlines. Hong kong still has very limited capacity, so those flights have gone because nobody was on them anyway. Other flights out of asia and in around asia, are 30, 50, 75 . Youve had in the last 24 hours, klm air france, and lufthansa both announcing draconian measures for staff freezings, no hirings, not taking on flight attendants, putting aircraft on the ground. L lufthansa has 13 aircraft it no longer needs that its storing on the ground. This will not take long before other airlines, the british airways, the u. S. Carriers who are slightly protected by this vast domestic network, but theyve been growing internationally, so theyre going to have to start cutting that you are european and asian routes too. I had mark sandy sitting in that seat yesterday, he was saying this is all looking more and more likely to a recession. This is all happening now, recession soon. Youre shaking your head. Were a long way from a u. S. Recession here. A global recession unlikely. I dont know anybody yet who is forecasting a u. S. Or global recession on the back of this. Now, could we could it and the reason look, the reason youre seeing the market down 600 points and the reason youre seeing it was down 960 points this morning was because of what im going to say next. If this continues and gets worse, if china doesnt grow at 4 , but actually grows at 3 , if italys growth falls into recession and the european union, which is teetering there anyway fall sbo into recession, then you are talking about a u. S. Recession at the moment. At the moment, thats the sort of media speak that the president doesnt like to hear, and at the moment i would say a global or u. S. Recession is not likely unless things get much worse. It is a feeding machine. Yeah. And nearly 3,000 down on the dow. The worst week since 2008. That will factor into general Economic Data if it lasts any longer. That cant be avoided. Richard quest, thank you very much. On the health side of all of this, let me bring in elizabeth cohen. You have more details on this california patient who Officials Say could be an example of what theyre referring to as community spread. Explain, a, what that means, and b, what do we know about this patient . Well, brooke, this is a real turning point today with this case at uc davis. Lets take a look at the u. S. Cases that have been going on thus far. When you look at these cases that are on this map, these people all have something in common. Either they were travelers to china or on the diamond princess cruise, or they were in close contact with the traveler. Actually, so close they were actually married. So either they had traveled or they were married to someone who had traveled. This uc davis case, thats not the situation. This person has coronavirus, and they had not traveled to a coronavirus hot spot, and they didnt werent in contact that they knew of with anyone who had coronavirus. So lets look at what happened at uc davis. This patient shows up at the hospital on february 19th. The patient had been sick for a while with pneumonia, and so uc davis rightly so asked the cdc to test, and the cdc did not immediately test. The cdc did not agree to test until about four days later, and then it took about another four days to get those results. So you might ask why . Why would they delay it . The reason is because the cdc has been focused on travelers or contacts of travelers. Theyre getting lots of demands for testing, and this did not fit the criteria, this person hadnt traveled. Wasnt in contact with the traveler. This really gets to the heart of the issue which is that theres been just not enough testing available. Cdc in atlanta has been doing the testing. Thats changing. More labs are coming online now. Up until now its been pretty much cd krrc in atlanta. Thank you. Let me bring in dr. Myron cohen, the dreirector of the institute for Global Health for the university of North Carolina at chapel hill. Thank you so much for joining me. Lets jump back to this concept of community spread, right . The question on so many minds is how could this patient how could you get coronavirus if you dont travel to a nation in which there is coronavirus and you presumably dont know anyone whos had it . I think the obvious suggestion is that there is someone in Northern California with coronavirus, whether its symptomatic or asymptomatic that was able to transmit the virus to what were going to call the index case, the person with new infection in Northern California. So there almost certainly have to be two people involved. It is possible, we think the coronavirus pri pamarily is thrh respiratory spread. A tremendous amount of work is looking at the efficiency of which its spread. I heard one of your commentators talk about the contamination of an environmental servicurface. Thats possible but much more likely with a respiratory spread. Does this mean were in a new phase, and because of that will that force officials to rethink how they test, how they respond . Yeah, i think this is an emerging pathogen, the coronavirus. Its a new pathogen, and the most important thing for us to do which we are trying to do now is to learn the rules that govern this. What does that mean . There are rules that govern transmission and the efficiency of transmission, and when transmission can and cannot occur, and then there are rules that govern what the innfectife will do. About 80 of the people have mild infection, and a smaller number go on to severe infections. There are reasons why most people have mild infekctions. Were really trying to learn the rules. If you look at other emerging pathogens, it took us 20 years to understand many of the rules that govern hiv. Weve had about 20 days to understand covid19, and its been terrific, by the way. I think the scientific capacity thats been applied to the problem, theres like an article every hour trying to answer the questions youre asking. In terms of whats happening, were grateful for that, thank goodness, all these brilliant scientific minds. There was that delay of several days as elizabeth was just pointing out, you know, from the time that that patient was admitted to the time that he or she was tested for coronavirus. And Uc Davis Medical Center with patients being treated said, quote, since the patient did not fit the existing cdc criteria for covid19 a test was not immediately administered. Is that concerning at all to you . Yeah, again, this is a dynamic situation. The test thats available, people are trying scientists are trying to understand the exact validity of the test as they develop it and improve it as rapidly as possible. This a test of the virus itself. And in order to develop the test and distribute it as will happen soon, it takes some time, and i think this will i believe this case will speed up the process by which this kind of testing is available nationwide. What about hospitals, because i know the cdc is advising americans to be prepared for significant disruption to their lives. How are our nations hospitals preparing . What are they doing right now . I can speak for the university of North Carolina where i work, and were taking we have terrific commitment in preparation. For example, every person who now checks in for medical care is asked about their travel history, whether they have a cough, and questions of that nature, and our system that is prepared in a particular way to respond to an affirmative answer. So i think most hospitals, most medical centers are doing the same thing. Youve raised a really big concern, and that is we have to avoid being overwhelmed. Should this spread, and no one can predict the exact spread. We need to be prepared to take care of the sickest patients effectively, and so were trying to prepare for that right now. And i think the preparations are going well. Im sure most hospitals and medical centers are doing what were doing. Okay. Dr. Myron cohen in chapel hill, North Carolina. Thank you, sir very much. Lets shift gears and talk 2020, the South Carolina primary is considered a must win for joe biden, and then he faces an even tougher battle, super tuesday. Ensure max protein. Cnn. Im brooke baldwin. The next couple of days are crucial in the 2020 president ial campaign. This saturday South Carolina votes offering a pivotal showdown between joe biden and senator Bernie Sanders. And then just three days later it is super tuesday as 14 states go to the polls all the way from maine to california, minnesota to texas. In all super tuesday tees up a whopping 1,357 delegates that. Is a third of the total delegates in the democratic primary, just for comparison South Carolina offers up 54. That is why candidates like elizabeth warren, Mike Bloomberg, Amy Klobuchar are not even scheduled to be in South Carolina today. Senator sanders will be there tonight, but hes also campaigning in North Carolina and virginia. Joe biden, Pete Buttigieg and tom steyer are all staying put in South Carolina today. And joe biden is all in on South Carolina, make or break state to be sure after he lagged in iowa, new hampshire, and nevada. But is he counting too much on one state . With just as we mentioned 54 delegates, his campaign is being roundly criticized in some of those super tuesday states for not showing up. Todays New York Times quotes the head of the chair of the party in texas who said this, quote, bernie has a ground game because he naturally has a ground game. Bloomberg has funded a ground game. Elizabeth warren has a ground game because she started organizing in texas a long time ago, but regarding joe biden, quote, i havent seen anything other than the events hes had in texas. With me now, michael john gray, chairman of the arkansas Democratic Party. And michael, thank you for being with me. You were quoted in this same article, and you said this, arkansas was, in my opinion, going to be a default biden state. He hasnt been here. Of all the campaigns the least organized in arkansas is biden. Whats the evidence . What makes you say hes the least organized in arkansas . Just the people im hearing from, brooke. The candidates that have been in the state, senator klobuchars been here twice. Senator warrens coming in this weekend. Senator sanders has been here, mr. Bloombergs making his third or fourth trip here. I know that last night mayor buttigieg had surrogates in the state, and theres some great support in the Vice President , but were not seeing the presence were seeing out of the other campaigns. Have you or folks within the party, have you heard from team biden . Weve heard sporadically from team biden early, and then weve heard from some people on the ground, but not a real plan and not a real Constant Contact with the biden camp, no. Might it be that theyre just putting all eggs in the South Carolina basket because they want the big momentum coming out of South Carolina to then already do well in states like arkansas . They just really need that win . So i think thats right. They want you guys talking about how he exceeded expectations in South Carolina, and now on to super tuesday, but i think what it does is it just points out the problems were having in the Democratic Party right now. Theres a whole branch that is worried about maybe the party going too far to the left, but the people that are doing the organizing and doing the work are the people that may be a little bit further left than what Vice President biden or some of the other candidates are, and those people arent doing the work to organize like left wing of the party is doing. Are you worried about that . Its a tight rope to walk. You definitely appreciate and enjoy the energy coming from listen, all of these candidates are progressive. Were using this label but theyre definitely progressive, specially compared to the regressive leadership in washington right now. Hearing moderate voters be a little bit timid about it but not seeing the candidates that are labeled as moderates doing the work to do the organization to get the voters out. One big concern among democrats is that the house of representatives will truly be at risk if senator Bernie Sanders becomes the nominee. Do you think the house would be at risk . I think if youre talking about seats in swing states or democratics narrowly won it or we have a chance, i think that definitely puts them back in play for the republicans. Seats that we picked up in solid blue states, i dont think senator sanders at the top of the ticket affects them as much. Do you think folks in arkansas will hold it against joe biden that he has so far been not around, not present as much . Or the 2 million absentee ballots have already been cast for super tuesday, maybe theyve already gone team biden . I dont think theyll hold it against former Vice President , but i think what youre seeing is theres discussion around other candidates, mayor bloomberg, mayor pete, mayor buttigieg and senators klobuchar and warren. You cant turn on a device in arkansas without seeing an ad for Michael Bloomberg. Michael john gray, thank you for your insight. Good to have you on. Thank you, brooke. As the white house tries to calm any panic about the potential outbreak of coronavirus in this country, democrats are really displeased with the president s response saying he is down playing the seriousness of the threat. Case in point, listen to House Speaker nancy pelosi today. Unfortunately up until now the Trump Administration has mounted an opaque and often chaotic response to this outbreak. The trump budget calls for slashing almost 700 million from the center for disease control, and this was the budget which came out after we knew about the coronavirus threat. And now it continues to our house kneads needs by ransackin needs whether its the ebola fund or others. That was up until now. Lets go to capitol hill to our congressional reporter lauryn fox. We heard a bit of it there from Speaker Pelosi. What are some of the specific areas where Speaker Pelosi and. Reporter democrats feel like the president publicly is not being completely honest about the potential risk to the public, that instead he is putting his concerns about the economy and the markets first and foremost and not basically going out and saying exactly what cdc officials and hhs officials are telling members on capitol hill behind closed doors. That is one of the main frustrations. The other one is the fact that the administration did know that this crisis was emerging, and they waited until this week to send out that supplemental spending request. Now, the good news that democrats are highlighting and republicans are highlighting is that lawmakers on capitol hill and their aides on the Appropriations Committee are really taking a step back from partisanship. Theyve been able to negotiate and try to find a middle ground, somewhere between that 8. 5 billion that Chuck Schumer suggested yesterday and that 2. 5 billion that the Trump Administration suggested earlier this week. So lawmakers and appropriations aides, theyre working very hard, and im told theyre consulting with hhs officials about how much it will actually cost to contain the coronavirus both locally and at a national level, brooke, so that is one bright spot up here on capitol hill, but certainly cause for concern from democrats up here as well. Yep, so theres the political piece of all of this and of course the health. Lauren, thank you. Coming up next, weve got a doctor on standby. S. May have its first case from an unknown origin. Back with us today to answer your questions is dr. Celine gounder, a professor of medicine and Infectious Diseases at the nyu school of medicine and Bellevue Hospital and shes the host of this new podcast epidemic with former ebola czar ron klain. Timely as ever, well be tuning in. In the meantime, let me run through some of these viewer questions. A viewer wants to know what supplies should i buy . So i would definitely have some alcoholbased Hand Sanitizer above 60 alcohol content. You want to have it in your purse, in your back pacs all over the place. The first thing you do when you come home from work is do that. Ive been doing that for years but i work at a hospital. Another key thing we were asking during the break about medications, so things like ibuprofen, tylenol, a lot of medications actually either the ingredients that are used to make medications or the medications themselves are from china, so one thing i would do is call your doctor if you are on prescription medications, ask them for like a 90day instead of a 30day supply. Make sure you have refills. Have that stuff on hand. There may be some disruptions in supply as well as getting into your doctors office. That is such a solid piece of advice. Second question, is it safe to order things from china online . Theres no reason right now to believe that thats a way of contracting the virus. Theres a delay between when something is manufactured, and a lot of this stuff is manufactured robotically. And then it sits in a warehouse. So even if there were any chance of something being contagious for any period of time, by the time it comes to you, its probably not. Next question, what about getting infected with the virus twice, are you immune once youve had it . Great question. Common cold coronaviruses, you dont actually have immunity that lasts for very long, and so we dont know the answer with this specific coronavirus. If you recover, are you immune, and if you are immune, how long does that last, and thats actually going to be one of the challenges with designing a vaccine is how do you actually cause the immunity to last long enough to protect you. Dr. Fauci is saying it could be a year, year and a half before a vaccine comes to fruition. Next question, how long can the virus survive on surfaces . Based on what weve seen it seems like maybe out to ten days. But thats highly dependent on temperature, humidity. Its a little bit hard to say and again, this is a new coronavirus. How is this different from any regular flu . Well, it is a different species of virus. That is a big difference. It is more deadly, you know, relative to the regular seasonal flu, and this is something brand new that our immune systems have never seen before, so you dont have any preexisting immunity at all. I mentioned off the top this patient from california who is this seemingly mysterious patient, hadnt traveled anywhere to any coronavirus infected countries, hadnt known anyone with coronavirus and suddenly comes up with coronavirus. There was a doctor at the California Department of Public Health who just said this is a turning point. Do you agree . I do agree. This is what were talking about shift from epidemic to pandemic. When you start to see Community Transmission in different countries, that its not just imported from china or from italy or from someplace like that, that youre seeing it transmit here in the u. S. From person to person, thats hugely different. And it means that our responses as public Health Officials and providers needs to change. We cant just target people based on travel history. We really have to broaden our net now. Okay. If you want more of dr. Celine gounder you can find her podcast epidemic starting tomorrow. Thank you very much for coming by. Keep your questions coming. Tom will use his experience starting a Nonprofit Bank for underserved communities and fighting for clean air and water in black and brown communities across the country to put social, economic, and Climate Justice at the heart of his presidency. Thats how we make real change. Steyer im tom steyer and i approve this message. We have some breaking political news out of the bloomberg president ial campaign this afternoon. Mike bloomberg is now releasing new Health Information concerning his heart, and he is encouraging the Democratic Front runner, senator Bernie Sanders to do the same. The senator had a heart attack last year, but his campaign has not shared full medical records. You remember this moment when Anderson Cooper asked him about that . I think, anderson, quite as much as any other candidate has. We received a release two detailed letters from cardiologists. Just to be clear, you dont plan to release any more records . I dont. I dont think we will, no. Cnns imjay lee is with me with more on Mike Bloomberg. So what are they releasing and what are they calling on others to do . This is new medical information from the Bloomberg Campaign about his heart health and the key figure that they released is his left ventricular ejection fracture number. This basically is how much blood the left ventricle pumps out. According to a doctors letter, his levels normal, somewhere between 60 and 65 . Remember, Michael Bloomberg had a stent procedure back in 2000 to treat a blocked artery, and Bernie Sanders had the same procedure a couple of months ago after he suffered a heart attack in october, and i think you can see where this is going. After the release of this information, Michael Bloombergs campaign has called on Bernie Sanders to release the same data point. I just want to read a statement that we got from bloombergs spokesperson. He says releasing this single scientific number about heart health could start to put to rest any concerns about senator sanders secrecy about his recent heart attack. Mike bloombergs doctor shared mikes number. Will senator sanders ask his doctor to do the same. We reached out to the Sanders Campaign to ask them whether they will do this, and heres what they said. The letters that weve released are very thorough. Theyre obviously referring to three doctors letters the sa Sanders Campaign put out at the time after his heart attack. So no indication right now this is information theyre planning on releasing. I did consult with our dr dr. Sanjay gupta just to get his expertise on this on the importance of this number, and he says that this number is the single best test of the overall strength of the heart and how well the heart is pumping blood to the rest of the body. So clearly the Bloomberg Campaign believes that this is Important Information that president ial candidates could release, but obviously this is a political move, too. They want to put sanders sort of in the spotlight about his past Previous Health issues. And it sounds like team sanders is like weve given you these letters, you know, case closed. I know people will still continue to push as they should. I mean, theres been this whole issue with his campaign in terms of transparency, especially when it comes to a candidates health. There have been questions raised particularly because obviously a heart attack is a very serious thing to go through, and given Bernie Sanderss age, and you know, we talk a lot about how it is so remarkable the top candidates in the democratic race right now are in their 70s, right . Both blerk aoomberg and sanders 78, biden is 77 and donald trumps, the man they want to take on, he is 73. I do think there are legitimate questions about the health of all of these candidates and the transparency issue is a big one, whether voters feel like they deserve to know this kind of information from their president ial candidates. Mj lee, good to see you. Thank you for all of that. Speaking of, the former Vice President joe biden reminded voters what made him such a beloved figure within the Democratic Party. In this powerful moment during our cnn town hall, biden connected with a pastor who lost his wife in the 2015 mass shooting at Mother Emanuel Ame Church in charleston, South Carolina, a few years ago. And along with the obamas, joe biden visited the church in the wake of the shooting that claimed those nine innocent lives. Last night reverend Anthony Thompson asked biden what impact his faith has in decisionmaking as a leader. I kind of know what its like to lose family and my heart goes out to you. If you may remember, after barack and michelle and i were there my family, i came back on that sunday, the regular service, because i had just lost my son, and i wanted some hope because what you all did was astounding. I dont know whether you all know this, all those who died, that were killed by this white supremacist, they forgave him. They forgave him. The ultimate act of christian charity. They forgave him, and you know, reverend, i happen to be a practicing catholic, but i went back to the church because i found particularly the black church, in this case was ame, it was not an episcopal church. I found that theres that famous phrase from keer kerr guard, faith sees best in the dark. I find the one thing it gives me and im not trying to convince you to be to share my religious views, but for me its important because it gives me some reason to have hope, and purpose. Ive learned the only way i dont know how youve dealt with it, reverend, but the way ive been able to deal with when my wife was killed and my daughter were killed, and then my son died, ive only been able to deal with it by realizing theyre part of my being, my son beau was my soul, and what i found was i had to find purpose, purpose, and what was the purpose . Every day i get up. Im sorry to go on. I apologize. Every day i get up i literally and not a joke, reverend, and i think you know this about my boy, that i ask myself i hope hes proud of me today. Because he asked me when he was dying, promise me, dad, promise me, dad. Promise me, he said i know no one loves me more than you do, dad, but promise me youll stay engaged. He knew id take care of the family, but he worried what i would do is i would pull back and go into a shell and not do all the things ive done before. It took a long time for me to get to the point to realize that that purpose is the thing that would save me, and it has, and every morning i get up and i say to myself when i give him my word as a biden, i hope hes proud of me. I hope hes proud of me because the thing that makes me move on, and the impact that loss had was astounding, and it had to be for you. Joe biden there at our cnn town hall. Again, the South Carolina primary is this saturday. Let me get you back to all things coronavirus. The global outbreak is already causing economic chaos. Stocks are now on track for the worst week since the financial crisis since 2008, and the massacre in milwaukee, what we know about the hours before five people were killed at an iconic brewery.
