Thunderstorm warning at the time. We know that 31 people were on board. We are told children are among the dead. Diane gallagher joins me now with the latest. Theyre in there searching for survivors if they can find them, right . Reporter thats right. Poppy, the governor said at this point finding survivors, the odds are not in their favor right now and four people who are missing. Theyre searching for those people. The good news for those divers is the weather conditions cooperating for them to continue that search. Again, the bad news is as you saw in that video those violent, choppy waters would make it very difficult to survive overnight a. Key question we have right now is whether or not any of the people were wearing life vests. Now, you are not required by regulations to wear them on duck boats because theyre a land and water operation. If you have been on one, they go from basically being on the ground, driving like a vek vehicle and going into the water and then the ground. Thats part of the appeal around the country. Of course, branson, missouri, a place where you have Church Groups and families, especially in the summertime coming to visit. This is these duck boat operations happening and going on here for nearly 50 years. The owner spoke to cnn this morning about just how devastated they were, a crew member is missing. At one of those four people missing at this point. Again, the thunderstorm warnings that were happening about half an hour before the boat sank. I want you to take a listen to what the owner had to say this morning. My understanding was that when the boat went in the water it was calm. And partway through coming back is when everything when the waves picked up and then obviously swamped the boat. People are supposed to be able to go out for an outing and have a good time and this it should never end this way. I think everybody agrees with that. The people in branson, missouri, around the country including the president of the United States sending their condolences to the families and the people there who are affected by this. Now, authorities did point out about 80 feet deep where the accident happened, poppy. The divers looking for those four remaining people off of that duck boat. There will be a full investigation, of course, leading up to that and should be hearing from authorities in an hour for more details. All right. Dianne, thank you. Four people missing. Children among the dead. To washington now and the white house where the dust has not even begun to settle from this weeks summit with Vladimir Putin and President Trump and already summit 2. 0 coming. If you didnt see that coming, dont feel bad. Neither did the director of National Intelligence who got a live interview at the aspen security summit. The white house has announced on twitter that Vladimir Putin is coming to the white house in the fall. Say that again. You Vladimir Putin coming to did i hear you . Yeah, yeah. Okay. Thats going to be special. Abby phillip at the white house. It was striking at the beginning. Hes laughing and seemed like Andrea Mitchell didnt know if he didnt really know but he didnt know, the director of National Intelligence did not know that the National Security and the president invited Vladimir Putin to the white house. It is stunning. It was really a stunning moment. And this entire week, poppy, has been extraordinary. It seems nearly every day since the president meet with Vladimir Putin on monday in helsinki, the white house has been trying to clean things up from this summit and from the president s Subsequent Press conference. This is just the latest example, the white house moving quickly to announce a second potential meeting with Vladimir Putin even after the first meeting remains unclear what the United States is going to do to implement whatever agreements were made in that room. But the dni shocked at learning this was mirrored by what other folks here in washington felt, as well. The president still getting a lot of questions right now about what exactly his policy is toward putin, what is he driving at here . Heres how he responded in a cnbc interview about his relationship overall and trying to accomplish. Getting along with president putin, getting along with russias a positive. Not a negative. Now, with that being said, if that doesnt work out, ill be the worst enemy hes ever had. The worst hes ever had. Reporter well, there are a lot of folks in washington and even in this building behind me that worry about whether or not getting along is all that needs to be on the agenda here. Meanwhile, director coats being so surprised about this has caused some folks in the white house according to the Washington Post to worry about whether President Trump upset about what he might deem to be a criticism of him or betrayal of him but its too early to know yet what the president thinks about it. He hasnt said anything yet about coats, at least not today, poppy. Abby phillip at the white house, thank you very much. Lets talk about this with the National Security analyst sean turner. David sanger is also here for the New York Times who broke that news yesterday about the personal effort by Vladimir Putin to impact the election and also the author of that great book you saw on the screen. Gentlemen, thank you for being here. Lets both listen to Something Else we heard from the director of National Intelligence. I dont know what happened in that meeting. I think as time goes by and president already mentioned some things that happened in that meeting, i think we will learn more but that is the president s prerogative. If he had asked me how that ought to be conducted, i would have suggested a different way. But thats not my role. Thats not my job. So it is what it is. David sanger, to you, i mean, what is more concerning i suppose for the American People . One, the fact that the director of National Intelligence didnt know that Vladimir Putin had been invited to the white house or that he still doesnt know four days after the summit what the two gentlemen talked about behind closed doors . It was a second of those two that i found most surprising, poppy. Dan coats performance yesterday here was remarkable. First of all, hes the most understated, just give me the facts type. He rarely gets out in public to speak so that was number one. Number two, he came out and said outright when asked by Andrea Mitchell, are you aware of what the content was of the discussion about Nuclear Issues which included whether to tex end two big Nuclear Arms Control agreements that the United States has right now with rodriguez, the new s. T. A. R. T. Treaty and he said he did not yet know what the content was of that. Imagine now. Were four days out from this summit and the director of National Intelligence cant figure out or hasnt been told by his own boss what was said on basically one of the most Critical Issues of Nuclear Security for the United States. I found that more stunning than, you know, that me might have putin come visit in the fall. But what is stunning, sean turner, it appears mike pompeo knows something because he said he was told about the details by the president. Listen to this. There was progress made on a handful of fronts, agreements to work on counter terrorism, conversations of arms control, to prevent the spread of nuclear proliferation. I guess good he knows and coats doesnt know. Is that odd . Is that concerning . It is concerning. I mean, look. Clearly dan coats was caught off guard by this announcement and i think i agree with david. It was stunning that he was able to acknowledge he didnt know what was happening in this meeting but while we got a good laugh out of the coats response yesterday it does speak to a broader issue regarding the relationship that the president has with his Intelligence Community. And i think its fair to say that its a relationship thats broken. I worked for the previous dni just shy of five years and i cannot imagine a scenario in which the president would have met with the leader of a country thats adversarial to the United States and that the dni would not know about the content of that meeting. You know, i think that one of the things that we have toize here is Vladimir Putin went into this meeting with the private president to control the narrative regarding what comes out of the meeting. The president wanted to have a private meeting and here we are in a situation in which the u. S. National security apparatus, the Intelligence Community, Defense Department and others are learning about what happened in that meeting, not from the president but from russian officials and Vladimir Putin. And thats a really concerning situation. Gentlemen, let me read you what one year ago an influential d. C. Conservative wrote when President Trump met putin briefly for the first time. Quote, trump got to experience putin looking him in the eyes and lying to him, denying russian interference in the election. It should be a fire bell in the night warning about the value moscow plays on honesty, regarding election interference, arms control or the middle east. Negotiate today with russia at your own peril. David sanger, guess who wrote that. That was john bolton. Let me guess it was john bolton, yeah. Yes john bolton invited put on the the white house d. The views change or grin the teeth, bear it and make the invite the president wanted . We have seen a lot of grit his teeth and bear it out of the john bolton. One point few weeks ago he said he wasnt commenting on all of his previous writing. Well, i can imagine why john bolton wouldnt want to comment on the previous writing. You could have reached for a great essay about how the president should go meet kim jongun, explain to him where to mail the nuclear weapons, not getting into a lengthy conversation with him and only after the weapons were turned over to then do much. Well, what did we hear from secretary pompeo the other day and the president . This is going to be a long, drawn out process. I think thats reality. But its certainly isnt the reality that bolton thought he was signing on for. Really quickly, shawn, before we go, Angela Merkel today, not only on the same page as the president on a lot of things, she welcomed trump putin summit 2. 0 if you will. She said i believe it has to become normal for them to meet. What do you make of that . Well, look. I think that there is an argument to be made for dialogue with our adversaries but what really concerns me here is that the nature of this interaction between the president of the United States and Vladimir Putin necessarily is inhibiting the Intelligence Communitys the ability to fully understand russias intent. I think that she is reflecting what some of the president s supporters in the United States said with the need for dialogue but having it the president has to understand after he meets with Vladimir Putin that is a run dont walk to the Intelligence Community to his director of National Intelligence situation to talk about what happened. Or have him in the room with you. Thats an option, as well. Better option. Shawn, david, thank you both very much. Still to come, as talks begin for that second summit between President Trump and president putin, the white house still doing cleanup after the first meeting. Well take a closer look. Also, the nfl punts on its new National Anthem rule after reports that one team looking to suspend players that conduct protests in the anthem. So where does this go . Dozens, thats right, dozens of tornadoes in iowa overnight. Now a threat for more across the country with the severe weather. Were on it. Almost 250 years ago, two lanterns were hung here to warn of the incoming attack on america. Today we have to acknowledge what our president wont our democracy is under attack again. Donald trump praises Vladimir Putin and meets with him on foreign soil, while rejecting our own Law Enforcement officials who say putin launched a hostile attack on our last election and is planning to do it again this year. Why would an american president want to meet with a dictator whos trying to undermine our democracy . Is trump again getting played by putin, or is he conspiring with a man who helped put him in office . If paul revere and other patriots had waited to act until it was safe or politically correct, we would never have the country we have today. Its time for congress, republicans and democrats, to put their political interests aside and act on behalf of our country. All right. Welcome back. Im poppy harlow. Russias ambassador said that moscow is open to a visit to the white house by Vladimir Putin in the fall but as talks begin around this summit 2. 0 if you will, the white house is still trying to clean up after the first summit. Heres a recap of whats been an extraordinary week. Okay. First, this answer from the press conference on monday. President putin, he just said its not russia. I will say this. I dont see any reason why it would be. 2016 election hacking. Tuesday the president said he needed to make a minor clarification. I said the word would instead of wouldnt. The sentence should have been, i dont see any reason why i wouldnt or why it wouldnt be russia. And then on wednesday it seemed President Trump had a clear answer to a reporters question but then another clarification followed. Is russia still targeting the u. S. , mr. President . Thank you very much. No. The president was said thank you very much and said no to answering questions. And now, another flip. Remember what the president called putins offer to allow Robert Mueller to question recently indicted russian Intelligence Officers if russia could interrogate a former u. S. Official . He offered to have the people working on the case come and work with their investigators with respect to the 12 people. I think thats an incredible offer. Okay . Thank you. Okay. And then incredible offer. Now, a day after the white house said the president was still considering that offer, it now says in a statement he disagrees with the idea. With me now, Eliana Johnson for politicoment back with us, abby phillip at the white house. Nice to have you both here. Looking at all of this, your reporting this morning is fascinating because you say morale inside the white house, your reporting is, its at the lowest point its been since both sides debacle around charlottesville. Whats the net effect of, though . Is this just people feeling low . Morale low . Or does this mean departures are in the work . I think the former, poppy. That was the upshot of my reporting and the comparison to charlottesville which came up in my reporting was so fascinateling. The two events share similarities of a year ago now at the very beginning of white house chief of staff john kellys tenure and share similarities in terms of a real gaffe by the president or some people would argue intentional statement and followed by attempted cleanup that didnt convince anybody and left people thinking that what the president had initially said first about both sides being culpable for the rally in charlottesville and then about undermining american intelligence assessments at the press Conference Monday is what he intended to say and that the cleanup sort of half hearted and mushy and i think the president inviting Vladimir Putin to a summit at the white house at some point in the fall, that really was the exclamation point on the week that sort of left people inside the white house scratching their heads. And so i think were starting to see a theme with this president that does have advisers inside the white house. You know, feeling despond ent. With russia in particular, people argued though theres calls to resign and there were with charlottesville, they dont have real policy implications necessarily and the people in charge of policy like john bolton and pompeo say why would we leave . Of republicans in congress to do about this, a stunning opinion piece this morning by republican representative will hurd in New York Times, the title is trump manipulated by putin. What should we do . He writes, quote, the leader of the free world participated in a Russian Disinformation Campaign that legitimizes the denial and weakened the credibility of the United States to both friends and foes. Abby, this comes a day after republican senator Lindsey Graham called the Trump Administration naive on them. How interesting is that to see . Well, popty, interestingly its somewhat regular thing for a lot of these republicans to criticize the president. I think thats the sort of pattern here is that theres a willingness to criticize and an unwillingness or maybe they dont believe that theres anything to do and unwillingness to do anything about it. I think in the case of will hurd, he is in the middle of a really tough reelection bid and been a constant critic of the president on a number of other matters including at the border and seeing republicans spooked here because they see a president whens acting perhaps in his own self interest, perhaps not in the interest of the party writ large. There is a risk here going into november that what all of this chaos can do is turn off voters who in the middle who maybe are giving the president the benefit of the doubt of Foreign Policy issues and see him acting in a way that is in the words of Lindsey Graham naive and erratic in some ways and just on the earlier point about the white house morale at this moment, we are at a moment where a lot of aides were planning on leaving. Looking toward the exits. This really hurts morale at a time when its already been quite low. Right. And there is already a clear sense of a lack of communication, preparedness at the highest levels of this administration and this doesnt help those probables at all. Eleana, theres an attack on the fed, increasing Interest Rates and the president write this is morning, tightening, meaning raising the rates, tightening now hurts all that we have done. It is extraordinary and unpress debited to see a president getting involved in Monetary Policy and publicly lashing out at the fed. What are the implications of this . What jumps out to me, poppy, President Trump, he ran as somebody to transgress norms and ran as somebody who played on peoples distrust of institutions, distrust of congress, distrust of banks in the wake of the financial crisis. So its interesting to me and he said he was going to be the savior and interesting to me to see him in office further undermining Peoples Trust in institutions. And i think thats worrisome. Whats the play here . Abby, i mean, whatever he says is not going do get the fed to change policy. Yeah. I mean, its interesting because this is a president who typically doesnt follow the norms around any of the institutions. There was a time not too long ago where he atalked about what seemed to be knowledge of what the Unemployment Rate was going to do before it happened and something that president s are not supposed to do before it is publicly released but this white house has typically flouted those kinds of norms but its also, poppy, important to note that this is not the first time the message of the white house. A few weeks ago one of the president s most senior economic advisers warned the fed that the economy was not overheating and that they shouldnt do anything to put the reins on this. The white house is trying to balance a couple of things. The economy is doing really well and the president is pursuing a risky trade policy, keeping the economy going and trying to prevent the fed from doing anything to hurt you know, the Economic Growth Going Forward so theyre really trying to push the fed here in order to kind of give them more room to run on these really risky trade policies. Guess what can hurt the Economic Growth . Its the tariffs that the president instituted and the fed noted that this week, something the president probably didnt like to see. Thank you both. Appreciate it. Have a good weekend. The nfl halting a new role to punish players for protesting in the neighal anthem. So it appear this is morning the nfl is looking to avoid a Public Relations nightmare. Calling a timeout on its new National Anthem policy. Back in may theres a controversial new rule forcing teams to suspend or fine players to protest the National Anthem. They were allowed to remain in the locker room if they wanted in the anthem and the season is closer and closer and this morning the league is rethinking the policy. Christine brennan joins me now with more. What a mess this whole thing has been for the league and now this. Absolutely, poppy. The reason we are even talking about it today is that the Associated Press reported that the Miami Dolphins were considering potentially suspending players up to four games if they did not abide by this new policy. Wow. In other words, if they came out and protested instead of staying in the locker room. Once that story break yesterday, the Miami Dolphins story, Associated Press reporting that there could be a fine up to suspension of up to four games and thats one more game if it was four, one more than winston got, he received a threegame suspension for sexually assaulting a uber driver. One more game for standing or protesting the anthem than you got than he got, a star player for sexual assault. Well, with that in mind, this thing, the pr nightmare was in well blown pr nightmare for the nfl and why they have halted it as of last night. Why cant they figure this thing out . I mean, these are a bunch of highly paid, highly intelligent one would argue individuals and they cannot seem to get it right here. I mean, i just i dont know. It seems like they keep thinking it will go away and puts it back in the headlines. Exactly. Im astounded. I certainly know a lot of these nfl people. I have covered them for years. I cannot believe they have gotten themselves into this mess and when this was announced, poppy, in may, there was a torrent of criticism immediately about what are you doing here . The idea was to tamp it down. And instead, of course, it enflamed the whole situation because as a journalist if im at a game im looking to see who stayed in the locker room after the anthem and interview them afterwards. Nfl took something basically dying just a non issue and had it go, you know, up to some incredible level of interest once again and so that happened in may. That to me would have been the moment where the nfl said, look at the reaction over 24, 48 hours. Lets pull back right now. They waited two months. The nfl players association, the union filed a grievance and they should have been worked together and now its come to a realization in may. Remind people of why and how this started and who was at the crux of it because this was about fighting and being a voice for those who were not heard in this country. This was all about social injustice and the way that africanamerican young men treated by the police and of course the terrible horrors of Police Killing a couple of africanamerican young men. This was two years ago. During preseason, Collin Kaepernick with the 49ers decided to sit and talk to a green beray. He said, dont sit, kneel. If the nfl went to kaepernick and said lets talk about this it might have nipped it in the bud and then President Trump in september of last year in the Alabama Senate race and that again was basically dead at that point and trump enflamed the whole thing again. Basically dead, no one talking about it and then enflamed it again. But Important Note at the top, christine, of winston and the threegame suspension for that versus four games considered here for making your voice heard. Exactly. Right. Which is why its such a huge issue overnight. Thank you. Nice to have you. Thank you, poppy. This morning, drug giant merck says it will lower the cost of some of its prescriptions by more than 10 . Some a lot more. Its a third major Big Drug Company to announce this month that theyre going to do this and this, of course, comes on the context of growing pressure from President Trump, from congress and from the public to do just that. Dr. Sanjay gupta joins me now. Sanjay, lets just talk first about merck because this is a latest announcement overnight. Theyre lowering the price of i think six drugs by 10 . One of the drugs by 60 . But i was reading through the names and a lot of these were not drugs that id heard of. Are these the most commonly used ones . How do you see this . No. And not some of the most expensive ones. There are drugs on the list as you probably say, poppy, cost tens of thousands of dollars a month to use so the impact overall i think is going to be a little bit hard to assess right now. And the impact on the viewers, you know, consumers watching this, hard to assess, as well. Lets give you frame of reference on this. The drug prices go up all the time. You know that. They go up way out of proportion to inflation. Pfizer, a drug company that lowered some of the prices, for viagra, one of the more popular drugs costs about 1,800 for 30 pills. That was last year. Right now it costs about 2,021 for 30 pills and gone up and thats the price after this rollback were talking about. So, you know, we pay a lot more medications, more than any other country as you know. And that average per person, that is unlikely to change, i think, with some of the rollbacks we are talking about. Finally, lets make a point, poppy. Theres a net price and theres a list price. The list prooice is what people pay after negotiations and rebates with the Insurance Companies and pharmacy benefit manager. Very few people pay the its an interesting that the ceo of merck stepped off of one of the Advisory Boards after the charlottesville debacle. The president took to twitter criticizing him after this was taken. This comes at the same time as the Trump Administration we learned this week is exploring importing drugs from other countries. They think that would have lower costs overall. Is there an issue in terms of the drugs i would assume would not be fda approved. Thats the big concern. They may have gone through an approval process in their own country but not necessarily the fda. Theres been opposition to this for a long time, predominantly from republicans. Dont reimport these drugs. It hasnt gone through our approval process. They are raising it and for a specific situation. You remember the whole situation where the price was raised from 13 to 750 and it boggled peoples minds. Thats the situation from importing drugs from other countries theyre seeking to address. When theres a generic drug, people can do whatever they want with the prices. What they are saying is, well provide competition by allowing some of the drugs to come in from overseas. Thats a proposal. Again, not everyone is on board with this. Not even for this specific use of it. We will see. The president has been talking about it since the campaign. Final thought, how big of a deal is this that the companies have said they will lower prices . The president can say this is a win. Is it really going to save the average american a lot . I dont think its going to save the average american a lot. I dont think its going to show in terms of the per capita spending. Were still one of the biggest drug spenders in the country. These seem more in name than in real impact. If you look at the language from these drug companies, they say until the end of the year. Who knows what happened in 19. Thats going to be pretty quick. Six months. Sanjay, thank you. Have a good weekend. You too. Get some rest. Ill try. Coming up, flu new images a more than two dozen tornadoes ripped through iowa.
