Honest in saying how hes going to pay for this and taxes are going to go up. Im sorry, elizabeth. You have not said that. I think we owe it to the American People to tell them where were going to send the invoice. This was the first debate since the impeachment inquiry launched over President Trump pressing ukraine to help find dirt on the bidens. He said the voters should focus on the president s corruption instead of hunters previous work in ukraine. This president on three occasions, three occasions, has invited foreign governments and heads of government to get engaged. The fact is its outrageous. I did my job. I never discussed a single thing with my son about anything to do with ukraine. No one has indicated i sfloo not entirely true. Hunter biden told abc and the new yorker over the summer he had spoken with his father about the energy company. One of the surly debates came with Peter Buttigieg and beto orourke about the use of guns. I expect my fellow americans to follow the law the same way we envors any provision, any law we have right now. We dont go door to door to do anything in this country. You just made this clear you dont know how this is going to take weapons off the streets. If you can develop the plan further, i think we can have a key bait about it. Et listening to those fellow americans, the moms, the students who came up with this extraordinary peace plan that calls for mandatory buyback plan, lets follow the inspiration they lead and not be led by polls and the problem is the policy. I dont need lessons from you on courage, political or personal. Whew. Warren feels like a frontrunner, but Bernie Sanders wands key sport. Lets talk to Sarah Westwood joining us this morning from washington. Sarah good morning or good evening or one big long debate night. A lot has happened since the last debate. Bernie sanders had a heart attack, theres an impeachment inquiry against the president , theres a total mess between turkey and syria. Last night it was clear there was another develop and that is Elizabeth Warren is now enjoying some front runner status. Thats right. Shes taking hits from more than a half dozen rivals and they got do details how she would pay for her Health Care Plan or not hers but the one she got behind and championed as her own. She still doesnt know how to do that. She was evasive in her answers on how should would do that. She was able to hold her own among the attacks and it was really mayor Pete Buttigieg that had one of the better nights aside from her. He had a bunch of breakout moments. Hes one who tends to get a little wonky. But buttigieg really pressed dwarn Elizabeth Warren would pay for it. Four times she was given the opportunity to answer. Heres an example of some of the attacks. Take a listen. I want to give a reality check here to elizabeth because no one wants to protect the billionaires. Not even the billionaire wants to protect billionaires. We have different approaches. Your idea is not the only idea. Senator warren, i just want to say i was surprised to hear you did not agree with me on this sub jek of what should be the rules around Corporate Responsibility for these Big Tech Companies when i called on twitter to suspend Donald Trumps account that you did not agree. We all have good ideas. The question is whos going to be able to get it done. How can you get it done . And im not suggesting they cant, but im suggesting that thats what we should look at, and part of that requires you not being vague. Tell people what its going to cost, how youre going to do it. And if i could add on my own notes, Amy Klobuchar said the difference between a plan and a pipe dream is something you can actually get done. Is there real angst among the other 11 that Elizabeth Warrens proposals is outside of what people want . Is it a return to normalcy or is it this big structural change or Sweeping Change thats been pushed by Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders . Thats been the theme throughout the debate and the issues and topics that have been covered. We did see more contrast drawn out. For example, we had everyone from Tulsi Gabbard who was talking and joe biden who was pushing more of a status quo approach to the conflicts in the middle east. You were seeing more contrasts and more personal attacks, more hand to ha handtohand combat. Some of the sharper moments were between Peter Buttigieg and beto orourke talking about guns. It was beto orourke after the el paso shooting who said, hell, yeah, i want to take your ar15s from you. There were three big exchanges for Peter Buttigieg. He had that exchange with Elizabeth Warren, the dustup with guns, and later he had a great moment with Tulsi Gabbard when she was able to tout his military experience. But the buyback has become something of a republican talking point. Theyve tried to protect that view onto the entirety of the Democratic Party to argue that all democrats want to take guns away and Peter Buttigieg prettied beto orourke on how the buyback plan would work and how going door to door to con face gate guns from americans is not feasible. Beto orourke was trying to take up a more moderate approach. Hes trying to absorb some supporters from bidens camp if biden down the road implodes. If theres one thing they all have in common, its the disadvantage they will be in no malt err who gets the nomination against donald trump. No matter who gets the nomination, the money raised by donald trump is staggering. 125. 7 million by trump and the rnc. That matches essentially the total by all candidates. How big a factor will this be moving forward. Certainly its a huge factor. Its one the Trump Campaign loves to tout. One of the many boosts trump loves to get because of the incumbency advantage. Of course, the democratic candidate will have to overcome that financial disadvantage. Its why theres been some skepticism raised about Elizabeth Warren pledging big donors because that imbalance will exist, and so buttigieg took some heat from progressives saying we cant beat donald trump with pocket change. He was taking a swipe at warren. The reality is whoever the democratic nominee ends up being will have to face off with a republican, the national committee, and the Trump Campaign who has much more money, has organized staffing in these key states, and will have to find a way to overcome that in a very short period of time. We learned last night joe biden spent more than he raised in the third quarter. He entered the campaign in october with Something Like 9 million cash on hand, but thats something to watch. He spent a lot of money at camp biden. Nice to see you, and well talk to you again in a half hour or so. Thanks, sarah. The s ps that coa s the s ps that coubpoenas thh a deadline dont mean much. Its dead wrong. The slaughter going on in syria is not a consequence of american presence. Its a consequence of a withdrawal and betrayal by this president of American Allies and american values. Two veterans of war squaring off on the debate stage over syria. Today Vice President mike pence and secretary of state mike pompeo lead a delegation trying to stop a Turkey Military incursion into north syria. Now hes preparing a working visit to marco rubio on Vladimir Putins invitation. Lets go live and bring in cnns arwa damon. Arwa, what are you seeing there . Reporter yeah. Good morning. And it seems as if erdogan might not meet with that u. S. Delegation, not entirely clear at this point, but those meetings might just take place between the u. S. Delegations turkish counterpart and not necessarily the president himself. Worth briefly noting, though, the consequences of what were seeing inside syria and what we have been seeing for the last eight plus years that war has ranked on inside that country is a consequence of multiple u. S. Administration failures, failures that still continue because as we will note with whats happening right now, the kurds having been betrayed by their American Allies had to return to their regime in damascus and its russian backers for protection, and that significantly altered the dynamic inside syria. The u. S. Is hoping to negotiate some sort of a ceasefire, but what leverage dus america actually have at this stage given that its in the possess of fully withdrawing its troops from the north. Its becoming slightly dicey in some instances. There was a standoff that took place when the turkishbacked syrian arab rebel units approached a u. S. Position, and then you have whats happening at the moment. Behind us is the turkish town of jay don pe nonand behind that the syrian town where theres been soch pretty pitched battles taking place over the last hour or so that we have been here. More intense clashes were seeing than what weve seen over the last few days as on the one hand the turks and the regime now of Bashar Al Assad are trying to gabe as much territory as they possibly can before negotiations that will not be held by the United States. Those negotiations will be haeping, the mediations will be happening through russia. The sounds you can hear behind you shows you how dramatic the situation is there on the border. Thank you so much for that, arwa damon. Clearly a power vacuum, a military vacuum left by the United States filled by them. Theyre hoping to knock her off her perch. Senator warren now essentially tied with joe biden for first place in recent national polls. Many attacking warrens plans most notably when she was given four chances to answer whether her medicare for all proposal would increase taxes on the middle class. Let me be clear on this. Costs will go up for the wealthy, they will go up for big corporations, and for middleclass families they will go down. The yes or no questiorno q didnt get a yesorno answer. This is why people are so frustrated. Your signature, senator, is to have a plan for everything except this. Im sorry, elizabeth. You have not said this, and i think we owe it to the American People to tell them where were going to send the invoice. This was the first debrate since the impeachment inquiry was launched over president trum trump. Joe biden said the focus should be on the president instead of his son hunters work in the ukraine on three occasions they got engaged in trying to alter our elections. The fact is its outrageous. I did my job. I didnt discuss a thing with my sobbing anything having to do with ukraine. No one has indicated i have. Thats not entirely true. Hunter biden told abc and the new yorker he had spoken with his father briefly. One of the more surly conversations came between Pete Buttigieg and beto orourke. I expect them to follow the law. We dont go door to door to do anything in this country. If you could vdevelop the pln further, we could have a conversation about that. Listening to moms and students and a peace plan to do buybacks, lets follow the inspiration and not be led by the consultants mayor buttigieg. The problem is the policy, and i dont need lessons from you on courage, political or personal. Warren may now have won a first spot. Sources tell us alexandria ocasiocortez, il and others support them. What was your way to work like. You know, it was about 3 00 in the morning, so it wasnt that bad. I think most of the partiers had probably given up for the night. The Public Transportation can be a mess. We ask this after every debate. How is thas the overall dynamic shift after what we saw last night . Unlike in previous debates, we saw biden fade into the background at first. He was the target of highprofile targets from kamala harris. In this one we saw snorn senator warren. Last night she was pressed by everyone on that stage including fellow progressive Bernie Sanders on how she would implement some of those policies and whether she with us being straightforward about the cost to them and whether taxes would go up, and she wasnt entirely priored to answer the questions. She did give some evasive answers, but overall we saw more contrast coming out between all of the candidates. There was a sharp exchange late in the debate between joe biden, senator warren and Bernie Sanders. He said, im the only one on this stage who has gotten something done. Bernie came back. Yeah. And Elizabeth Warren said what about the Consumer Protection bureau. I did that. Take a listen. I agree with the great job she did and i went on the floor and got you votes. I got votes for that bill. I convinced people to vote for it. Lets get those things straight too. Senator warren, do you want to respond. I am deeply grateful for president obama who fought so hard to make sure that agency was passed into law and im deeply grateful to every Single Person who fought for it and who helped pass it into law, but understand. You did a helluva job in your job. Thank you. How did she handle that . She did a great job there. She showed some restraint. She could have gone after biden harder, but what she did there was sort of demonstrate that she knows shes going to have to if she wants to maintain her frontrunner status and expand it, shes going to have to pick up some people who say they support biden, that means not going after him with everything shes got. But also the exchange that you mentioned with Bernie Sanders, going after him on his record, sanders took what biden is using as his greatest strength, his long record of achievement in the senate and as Vice President and turned it into a liability and thats something is that could be difficult for him moving forward because he has this very long record stretching back decades. Its not necessarily the case that hes always taken vote or held positions that are in step with the democratic electorates. That could be more of a problem Going Forward when we start to drill down on what is his long record. So overall the dynamic remains, a steady rise for warren, a leak for joe biden, and a pretty solid base for Bernie Sanders. Any other of the nine break out or have a chance to reemerge in the weeks ahead . I think we really saw mayor Pete Buttigieg have a few breakout moments. Hes not someone who has necessarily stuck out in the last debates. He temds to be longwinded and more professorial. He had three big moments on health care, guns, and troops in the middle east. And we saw senator Amy Klobuchar be more aggressive than she has in previous debates. Theres a chance she wont make the november debates. Shes reached the donor threshold but not the donation threshold. We saw her go very aggressively after senator Elizabeth Warren on health care and really present herself as one of the more moderate options, drawing a strong contrast with the progressive candidates. Another voice we heard, Michael Bloomberg in the opinion pages of the Washington Post rights this. Theyre not short on big ideas, but voters mutt demand they explain how they intend to move from proposing plans to actually implementing them, including passing them through congress. Those who dodge the question by speaking of revolution and the bully pulpit arent up to the job. What do you make of michael blo blo bloomberg . Would could see it as a swipe. Also perhaps Elizabeth Warren who has coasted into the lead. But there hasnt been a whole lot of scrutiny on exactly how those plans would be implemented, what their costs would be, and whether middleclass taxes would go up. I think that was one of the areas where Elizabeth Warren struggled the most is where she repeat eed struggled when asked how taxes would go up. Even Bernie Sanders acknowledges that taxes will go up for families. Arguing that costs will be recouped in what families save in health care costs, but still Elizabeth Warren refusing to answer that question could lend credence or at least, you know, fuel the argument from republicans that her policies are unachievable and that shes not being honest about how much they would cost taxpayers. Whispers that bloomberg still might get in if joe biden truly falters in the weeks and months ahead could be very interesting. Sarah westwood, thank you. Nice to see you. Five candidates will be on 20 20. Oo the white house strategy of complete noncompliance could push nancy pelosi to hold a whole how vote. Nancy pelosi is holding off for now im being thoughtful in terms of the path were on. Were not here to call bluffs. Were here to find the truth and hold up the constitution of the United States. George kent telling lawmakers he was ordered by supervisors to lie low after people complained. He raised red flakes back in march. Now mick null v mu vauny i under the gun house lawmakers had been told at a may meeting organized by mulvaney, three people were put in charge of ukraine policy and then special envoy, kurt volker, Energy Secretary rick perry and the ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland.
