The debate in iowa live on cnn, light on personal attacks, heavy on policy, climate, free college, health care, and especially foreign intervention. The gravity of the moment is clear. The candidates addressing priorities as commander in chief. They denounced President Trumps handling of iran and other crises. Isis is going to reconstitute itself. We have to pull our forces out. Americans have to leave the entire region. And quite frankly, i think hes flatout lied about saying the reason he went after the reason media the strike was because our embassies were about to be bombed. Two great Foreign Policy disasters of our lifetimes were the war in vietnam and the war in iraq. Both of those wars were based on lies. And right now what i fear very much is we have a president who is lying again. We have one general after another in afghanistan who comes in and says, you know, weve just turned the corner. And now its all going to be different. Then what happens . Its all the same for another year. Someone new comes in, and weve just turned the corner. Weve turned the corner so many times were going in circles. Its time to get our combat troops home. Afghanistan, i have long wanted to bring our troops home. I would do that. Some would remain for counterterrorism and training. In syria, i would not have removed the 150 troops from the border with turkey. I think that was a mistake. I think it made our allies and many others much more vulnerable to isis. Not just conventional military challenges, not just stateless terrorism, but cybersecurity challenges, climate security challenges. Forward interference in our elections, its going to take a view to the future as well as the readiness to learn from the lessons of the past. The most anticipated moment of the night came between Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. They were asked about warrens claim that sanders told her privately a woman cannot win. We want to be clear here, youre saying that you never told senator warren that a woman could not win the election. That is correct. Senator warren, what did you think when senator sanders told you a woman could not win the election . I disagreed. Can a woman beat donald trump . Look at the men on this stage. Collectively they have lost ten elections. The only people on this stage who have won every single election that theyve been in are the women. Amy and me. [ applause ] at the end of the night a moment to make progressives cringe. Sanders tries to shake warrens hand. She declines, and they have what looks like a Tense Exchange with tom steyer looking on. Joining us, White House ReporterSarah Westwood live in washington. Thank you so much for getting up bright and early for us. Good morning. Reporter good morning. So less than three weeks until iowa. They covered a lot of ground last night. Everything from Climate Change to the iraq war. But in your view, did any of the candidates make the case to the American People that they can beat donald trump . Reporter certainly what we didnt really see between the candidates was a lot of efforts to contrast themselves with each other in terms of attacks. We did not see them go after each other. And donald trump didnt loom as large over this debate even as some of the previous ones. Now the fact there wasnt really a standout moment for any of the candidates on that stage could benefit those at the top of the tier like joe biden if the vase this fluid heading into the Iowa Caucuses, just under three weeks from now. That benefits the frontrunners. Perhaps the reluctance to take the gloves off could have something to do with this coming against the backdrop of the Iowa Caucuses because in the caucus setting, the voters second and third choices do matter. Perhaps we will see them sharpen their claws heading into the later primary states. We did not see a lot of those contrasts being drawn, aside from at the beginning of the debate when there was some policy debates and policy comparisons made in the arena of Foreign Policy. How did joe biden do . He seemed to in several moments try to set himself up as the guy whos going to be against donald trump. You know, he said hes the one who gets most of trumps affection, you know. He talked about how he cant wait to debate donald trump on the debate stage about the economy. Reporter throughout this race, joe biden has leaned very heavily on the argument that he is the most electable and he is best positioned to beat donald trump. What we saw joe biden do a lot of last night was lean on his experience as the Vice President. The fact that hes been in the rooms for a lot of these decisions. The fact that he has met with these leaders of foreign states. Hes making the argument that not only could he beat President Trump but that he could start being president on day one because hes been so close to it before. You also heard several other candidates start to pivot toward the electability argument last night, as well. You saw Elizabeth Warren win weather she was asked to Elizabeth Warren when she was asked about the report that sanders told her a woman couldnt win, she pivoted to the electability argument saying that she and amy klobuchar, the only ones who have won every race theyve run in. And you see Bernie Sanders also highlighting times when hes been able to work with republicans in a war powers bill. That is something we havent seen Bernie Sanders do before, highlighting his work with republicans. Perhaps trying to ease fears among some democratic voters that hes too far left to be electable in a general election. Quickly before we let you go, did you find Elizabeth Warren pivot there effective . She tried to make it a broader conversation instead of narrowing in on this open feud between her and Bernie Sanders. Reporter Elizabeth Warren, the conversations about electability with regards to Elizabeth Warren havent had much to do with her gender. Thats sort of the argument she made. They have much more to do with fears among democrats that shes her policies are too progressive for a general electorate. Thats something that we did not hear Elizabeth Warren defend herself against those criticisms, but something that she will have to deal with if she makes it further in this race. All right. Sarah westwood. White house reporter. Thank you so much for getting up. Thanks. Impeachment trial of President Trump, a u. S. President , only the third in history, about to begin. Speaker pelosi says the house will vote on a resolution to transmit articles of impeachment to the senate. She will also name the impeachment managers who will prosecute the case. The senate trial likely to begin next tuesday. Before proceedings move to the senate, House Democrats unveiled new evidence supporting their case for removing President Trump from office. Congressional correspondent Phil Mattingly has the latest from capitol hill. Reporter just as the house of representatives is about to vote to send the articles of impeachment over to the United States senate, something weve been waiting on for the better part of the last three weeks, new information. This information related directly to a former associate of rudy giuliani, an indicted former associate of rudy giuliani. Lev parnas has said he wants to cooperate with investigators, wants to turn over documents, notes, Text Messages, whatsapp messages. Hes done that, and now those messages, all of that information is going to be part of the packet of information and evidence that House Democrats sends to the United States senate for that trial. Now combing through the documents that we have seen up to this points, they include things like a previously undisclosed letter from rudy giuliani, the president s personal attorney, to president elect zelensky of ukraine making clear he wants a meeting with zelensky to talk about a, quote, significant issue. This meeting he says would take it would take effect under the pretense of him being President Trumps personal lawyer, not as a member of the administration. However, in the letter, he makes very clear that he does have President Trumps acknowledgment and consent to ask for such a meeting. All of this underscoring what weve seen several times over the past several weeks, that there is a lot of information still out there about what was actually taking place inside the Trump Administration and, obviously, outside the Trump Administration as it relates to its ukraine policy. And underscoring House Democrats push to have more of that Information Available and potentially witnesses come testify about that information when the trial stage hits in the United States senate. With all thats going on now in the country and in the world, this is something everybodys going to be paying attention to. Guys . All right. Phil mattingly, thank you so much. And the documents from lev parnas, the indicted associate of rudy giuliani, raises many questions as they answer. One intriguing Text Exchange shows former ukrainian prosecutor general yuri levschenko pushing for the removal of marie yovanovitch. There were cryptic texts between parnas and a congressional candidate implying the senators movements were being tracked in ukraine. Yovanovitchs lawyer called for an investigation saying the idea she was being surveilled is disturbing. President trumps expected to sign the phaseone trade deal with china this morning. A big deal for the president even if its skin oh paper. We skinny on paper. We havent seen the text yet. The deal is almost two years in the making and leaves tariffs on 370 billion worth of goods. Trump has slammed americas past trade agreements as job killers. On the debate stage last night, sparring between joe biden and Bernie Sanders who did not vote for nafta. Joe and i have a fundamental disagreement here, in case you havent noticed. And that is nafta, pntr with china, other trade agreements, were written for one reason alone that is to increase the profits of large, multinational corporations. And the end result of those two, just pntr with china, joe, and nafta, cost us some four million jobs. The estimates have all over the place for how many jobs have been lost between nafta, other trade agreements, and just normalizing trade relations with china. Its not zero. Trump already owns this debate, by the way, and the Strong Economy is an advantage for him. For democrats, they make the point that this economy isnt working for everyone. Love that debate because the American Public is getting clobbered. Youre seeing the president boast about the dow jones, wondering whether any of that will ever get to your Kitchen Table. Join me. Makes the point that Climate Change is an economic issue, and health care on the debate stage is very important. That is an economic issue, as well. But you know, 76 of americans in our most recent poll say the economy is somewhat good or good, the highest in 20 years. People feel like the economys good. Makes it a challenge for candidates to break through on the issue. They clearly want to bring it back to the Kitchen Table issues. Iran admits its military accidentally shot down the jet killing all 176 people on board. But it has not acknowledged the plane was struck twice. Lets go live to abu dhabi and bring in nic robertson. How are officials going to explain this . Reporter theyre probably not. This is the way that iran deals with information that it doesnt want to have to deal with. It will ignore it and push it off to one side. You know, in the first moments after the iranians admitted they shot this plane down, the president did tweet once that it was missiles, not missile, that took the aircraft down. However, subsequent to that, politicians and military commanders alike have talked about a singular missile. What this video shows is probably how horrific it was on that plane in the last moments because the second missile is fired 20 seconds after the first one. So the aircraft clearly in the air, clearly horrific situation on board. And belies what the military have said that they had a tensecond window to make a judgment if the plan was a valid target or not. Now it appears that they had a tensecond window followed by a 20second window and continued with the same logic that they were going to down it. Also hearing now from ukrainian investigators that they want to get the black boxes from the iranian authorities, not clear if thats going to happen. All of this were talking about plays into the lack of transparency by the leadership in tehran. Thats going to have a domestic impact. Weve seen the protests on the streets there. Iranian news media reporting that the person who took that first video we saw of the downing of the passenger jet has been arrested. Not clear if thats true or just pressure from the regime in iran to stop people sharing w the ir authorities is this is not this revelation about the latest missiles is not going to tamp down concerns and anger at the leadership mishandling all of this in iran. Thanks for your analysis as usual. 18 minutes past the hour. To washington, Senate Democrats believe they have the 51 votes to pass a war powers resolution limiting President Trumps ability to take military action against iran. Democratic senator tim kaine of virginia says four republican senators have signed on to this bipartisan resolution. Mike lee, around paul, susan collins, and todd young. If true, its a rebuke of the president after he ordered the killing of irans top general. Senator kaine says the vote could vote next week. It would likely pass the house and be voted vetoed by the president , rather, with an override unlikely in either chamber. Good morning, sarah, again. You know, i have a lot of questions about what these Text Messages mean and what they show. But the existence of them, does it put more pressure on republicans to allow witnesses to vet all this . Reporter personal so far in 2020 and for past nearly a month the conversations about impeachment have really taken place just in the context of process. Will there be witnesses, what will the senate rules look like. And the details of the ukraine case as this latest revelation from these sdroumts reminded us have not been discussed in weeks. Now people are coming back to the impeachment debate with fresh eyes. This is really the first thing thats going to remind them of how complicated and potentially very kefrlg this ukraine case is. So thats something that is going to start the trial off potentially in a way thats advantageous for democrats, that puts the trump team back on defense just when they were starting to feel that polling the Public Opinion was starting to turn toward them as a result of what the white house saw as a failed gambit from House Speaker nancy pelosi to withhold the articles. This latest document suggests perhaps there is merit to what she did because theres natumor information to be examined. The House Speaker is expected to announce the impeachment managers who prosecute the case in the senate. Are you hearing anything from sources about who shes expected to name . I know shes been keeping her cards close to the vest. Im interested if youre hearing anything from sources in the white house about who they want to be the managers, who theyre going to face off against. Reporter its interesting because the white house has held off on making decisions about who will play key roles in the president s defense team until they learn who these managers will be. We know that President Trump has considered naming conservative allies in the house to the defense team because he craves a robust madefortv defense in the senate. And if there are particularly partisan democrats who pelosi names as managers, thats something that the white house has considered as counter weights. Pat sipaloni, white house counsel, is expected to take the lead in the defense. Hes not someone who spent a lot of time in the spotlight. Thats a lot of concern for white house officials. Pelosi has held the identities of these managers very close to the vest, so thats something that obviously all of washington and the country will be watching closely today. That could very well shape what the president s defense looks like, as well as what the prosecution looks like. It will be an interesting split screen with the president with his madefortv moment, signing a the phaseone trade deal with china. There will be pomp and circumstance. Its going to be packaged as a promise kept, even though it theres still an awful lot of work to be done in the china trade relationship. Then theres this votes in the house. One wonders what the mood is at 1600 pennsylvania avenue trying to stage one thing while this other thing is happening, as well. Reporter right. Thats been the case for now nearly four months now. I mean, since september, thats the challenge that the white house has faced. As you mentioned, its not exactly a promise kept with the china trade deal. The white house, the Trump Administration has long been saying they werent going to do this incrementally. They wanted one sweeping deal that addressed all the different areas of concern that the Trump Administration had with the u. S. China trade relationship. This deal doesnt necessarily do. That the text has been kept from a lot of officials who think that they should be in the loop. But regardless, this event at the white house is taking place roughly an hour after Speaker Pelosi announces the names of the house impeachment managers. So like lots of things the white house has tried to do since the fall, it runs the risk of getting overshadowed by the impeachment drama. Yeah. And the drama never ends. Our White House Reporter, Sarah Westwood, thank you so much for getting up for us. A familiar debate over the varying cost of the candidates health care plans, particularly the medicareforall plans embraced by senators warren and sanders. I think it is much better to build on the Affordable Care act, and if you want to be practical and prague reserve at the same progressive at the same time and have a plan and not a pipe dream, you have to show how youre going to they for it. My plan is 1. 5 million over a take, not a small sum but not what were hearing from the others. Allow medicare to negotiate precipidrug prices and roll back the trump Corporate Tax cuts that went to corporations in the wealthy that didnt even need it. The numbers that the mayors offering just dont add up. The average family in america last year paid 12,000 in some combination of deductibles and copays and uncovered expenses and fees. You cant cover that with the kind of money that the mayor is talking about. Health care a top campaign issue. Many americans concerned about the rising cost. While defending her plan to build on the Affordable Care act, senator klobuchar pointed out more people support obamacare than approve of President Trump. Now theres no direct pull comparing those two, but its true that polls show obamacare is better liked. Poefls done in november show polls done in november show obamacare it a tenpoint advantage over President Trump. Smoke from raging wildfires engulfing melbourne days before the start of the australian tennis championship. The air so thick with smoke, its already affecting the qualifying rounds. Will ripley live from melbourne with the latest. And i know one player had to pull out because of a coughing fit . Reporter yeah. It was really extraordinary. And not the best optics for the sponsors of one of australias most important matches that ground to a halt because the player goes into a coughing fit and collapsed to her knees before eventually walking off the court. We were driving by Maria Sharapova earlier today, and her match was canceled because of the smog. She told reporters that she was feeling it. You know, in the second round. She had actually felt quite heavy in her chest. Imagine if some of these players are out there breathing in heavily for three, four, five hours, all of the physical zergz required. Exertion required. And you have fog combined with very high temperatures that are forecast over the weekend. Sometimes in excess of 100 degrees. It can be very difficult conditions not just for the players but for the spectators. Now the organizers are trying to do downplay the situation. Theyre saying, you know, players sometimes drop out of matches all the time. The number of people who claim to be affected is not out of the ordinary compared to previous years. But certainly it is not something that the Australian Open wants to have happening at this point. I can tell you, you know, just within the last hour, the last time we spoke, the rain has stopped. Like clockwork, the smog came right back. The air quality here hazardous at times. You know, depending it fluctuates between unhealthy and hazardous. And we know that a very short distance from here, fires are burning, more than 100 fires burning in australia as we speak. We flew over one of them as we were coming into melbourne. And my cameraman, paul, took video out of his aircraft window. It was really startling to see this huge plume of smoke that went above the cloud line. Some of these are so intense, theyre creating their own weather. And we know that the lightning strikes from the storm that moved through earlier have actually triggered some fires of their own. You have dry ground because australia is dealing with an historic drought now. Yes, the rain provided a temporary reprieve. But when youre talking about, you know, already dry ground, lightning strikes, and the potential for more fires to continue burning throughout the weekend, it could be a very unpleasant and perhaps even dangerous situation as the Australian Open gets under way with some of the biggest stars in tennis here in melbourne for this very important sporting event.
