Saima, explain to us, this is still an active scene, isnt it . Reporter it is, christine. This is very much under way right now. Weve seen sirens blaring, rushing past us, both paramilitary troops, the rangers here in karachi in pakistan. Weve seen the police. Weve seen dozens of vehicles and ambulances. We counted at least 30 ambulances coming through. They were rushing towards the Airport Security force academy, which is right next to Karachi Airport. They are the very people, the force that first confronted those ten militants that attacked Karachi Airport at terminal 1, an older terminal, overnight sunday here in karachi. They themselves may well be now under attack. Now, i must emphasize, christine, we havent been able to verify exactly what is happening there. We dont know how many attackers there are or what kind of attack this is. All we know, christine, is we were actually filming, me and my team, my producer and cameraman, were actually next to the runway filming the damage of the attack sunday night. We were given access by the airport manager. He was with us when we heard an alarm sound. We were told to rush to safety, another attack was under way nearby. At that point, we thought it was the airport itself. We then heard that it was the Airport Security force that was under attack. We are still working to confirm what exactly is happening there. Christine . Now, remind us, sundays attack was apparently retribution for a u. S. Drone attack. Explain to us what is the motivation, you think, behind the attackers. Reporter yeah, this is one of the few reasons that were given by the taliban. The Pakistan Taliban released a statement saying this was a revenge attack for the drone strike that killed their former leader, hakimullah mehsud, two years ago. They also said this was a warning to the pakistani government and military to say back off, stop attacking us, stop targeting our militant hideouts, stop carrying out operations against us. Otherwise, you will see more bloodshed like this. And we did get notification that the taliban was distributing pamphlets last week saying that they would declare all out war on june 10th that is today on june 10th against the pakistan state, should they not stop targeting them. Early morning when i woke up, we confirmed here on cnn that they had carried on their air strikes against militant hideouts in the mountainous terrain in the valley between afghanistan and pakistan, that mountainous area that the taliban, both afghan and Pakistan Taliban use to their advantage to hide out in because of the nature of the mountains and the caves there, christine. So, the Pakistan Government hasnt stopped targeting them. Police identified the shooters as a married couple, jared and Amanda Miller. Police say they draped an American Revolution flag and a swastika on the officers bodies. Then they headed across the street to walmart. A good samaritan, joseph wilcox, was shopping there. He tried to stop them using his concealed weapon, but he was killed. The rampage ended when they exchanged gunfire with responding officers. A close friend of Amanda Miller says her husband, jared, was always talking about the government keeping tabs on him. She was stunned to learn her best friend, amanda, was even involved in the bloody ambush. The only thing i can think of is saying that she kept saying something about the government, like, watching their every move. I was a little skeptical of jared when i first met him, but i was there for her because i knew she loved him, and i tried to see through everything. The father of Amanda Miller says he begged his daughter not to marry jared and not to move to las vegas. Once she left, he says jared kept shutting off her phone, isolating her from her family. The white house still dealing with the fallout from the Bowe Bergdahl situation. At a house briefing last night, lawmakers were told as many as 90 members of the Obama Administration knew about the deal to free Bowe Bergdahl while congress was left in the dark and that the final decision to move forward with the Prisoner Exchange, now theyre being told it did not come from the president. So, that came as a shock to the chairman of the House Armed Services committee. That was the last question asked, and the answer was secretary hagel, which kind of surprised me, because i did see the president out there with the bergdahls. Sounded like he was taking full credit for the operation. And now theyre saying that secretary hagel made the decision. Probably parsing of words or probably, maybe now that theres a little pushback or, i dont know. I dont know whos in charge or whos making the decisions. It did seem to me that it was the president , and that was the emphasis up until this briefing. And now theyre saying secretary hagel. All right, we want to show you a new usa today poll. A majority of americans, 43 to 34 , say that president obama was wrong for approving the prisoner swap. 23 say theyre not sure. In a survey of just veterans, 68 said the president made a mistake. Only 16 say they think he did the right thing. Since his release, Bowe Bergdahl still has not spoken to his family. Doctors say hes in stable condition but hes not ready to travel back to the United States just yet. Karl penhaul is tracking the recovery live from landstuhl, germany, this morning. Reporter well, john, the pentagon really is now trying to control the information flow about Bowe Bergdahls recovery, and for that reason, medics here at the hospital in landstuhl are no longer being authorized to update us about bergdahls condition, but we did hear overnight from a pentagon spokesman in washington that he said bergdahl continued to improve every day. Well, essentially, we already knew that from a statement put out before the weekend. That spokesman also said that bergdahl so far has not had any contact with his family, although we know he is authorized to do that at any time he chooses. Now, we do also know that every morning, bergdahls physicians and his psychologists come together in a huddle to decide whether bergdahl is fit enough to be transported back to the United States to continue the Recovery Process in san antonio, texas. So far, they havent taken that decision, and you really have to ask yourself the question whether theres also a political factor there, whether the pentagon may be trying to wait for the political firestorm over the circumstances of bergdahls release to die down a little before they decide to transfer him. Just to give you an idea, on average, were told that wounded american soldiers who come through landstuhl as inpatients usually spend an average of between three to five days here before theyre transferred back to the United States. Bergdahl has now spent double that amount and still no word on when hell be transferred. John . Thats interesting, karl. Just, any sense of urgency . Is there any real need to move it along more quickly, or will they let it take the time that it needs . Reporter it is very difficult to get any sense of that at all, because like i say, the last updates that we had here on the ground in landstuhl about bergdahls condition was on friday. Since then, the pentagon seems to have clamped down on this information flow. But certainly, on a medical and on a psychological front, what the medics have said is, no, take this slowly. This is a process that could take minutes or days. It could even take years. And we dont need to hurry things now. And another interesting detail thats come out from the pentagon as well overnight is that bergdahl may be owed up to 200,000 in back pay, but so far, no decision has been taken to pay him that money, pending the judicial review on why he fell into taliban hands, john. 200,000 is a lot of money, an interesting development. We were on the runway looking at the cargo holds when we were rushed we were rushed towards by the airport manager who said you need to get to safety, this is a dangerous situation, there is another attack under way. We were led to our cars. When we got into our cars, they told us that the attack was being carried out at the Airport Security force academy, which is right next to the airport itself that was targeted sunday night. Now, this is the Airport Security forces, of course, the very members of the security personnel that were the first line of defense at the airport, that protected the airport and stopped those attackers from getting to the main terminal, and they themselves today appear to be under attack. Now, we have no information on what kind of attack this is, whether or not an attack is actually being carried out, because a short while ago, a minister in the National Assembly claimed there was no attack under way. But while we were there, there have been at least 30 ambulances rushing past us that weve managed to count, dozens of vehicles with rangers thats the Paramilitary Force here and the police and armored personnel vehicles rushing past u. S. So, there is a heightened state of alert, of course, a heightened state of security, and right now were trying to get to the bottom of what is going on inside that academy. John . Saima, the fact that an attack like this could happen the day after another one did in the same area gives you a sense of the stability, or really the lack of stability in that area right now. Reporter yeah, john, weve been out there filming all morning, taking a look at the aftermath of that attack on sunday, which came as a surprise to everyone that they managed to get inside the airport, albeit it the old terminal building, and we did see a heightened police presence. In fact, when we were filming, we were stopped en route by plainclot plainclothed men. They wouldnt let us go any further, blocked our way with the van. When we were on the runway, the armed force men asked us not to film and leave the area. So, there is a heightened presence of security, certainly, but we are not sure why or how these attackers or this attack is taking place and how they managed to get anywhere near the airport academy, ass academy. Hes live for us this morning from landstuhl, germany. What do we know about his condition at this point, karl . Reporter well, christine, let me tell you, on average, when a wounded u. S. Serviceman comes through this hospital here in landstuhl, germany, theyll spend between an average of three and five days before being transferred back to the United States. Now, Bowe Bergdahl has now been here for almost double that amount of time and still no sign that he is about to be transferred. Getting information, getting the full picture is getting more difficult, because the pentagon seems to be wanting to really control the information flow about this. And for that reason, medics here at the hospital are no longer authorized to give us updates on bergdahls condition. But overnight, out of washington, a pentagon spokesman did say that bergdahl was improving day by day. Well, that, essentially, we already knew since before the weekend. And he also said that bergdahl has until now had no contact with his family, although he is authorized to do that at any time. Now, each morning, bergdahls physicians and psychologists will come together in a huddle and decide whether he is fit enough to be transferred for his third stage of recovery back in san antonio, texas. So far, they have not taken that decision but are not giving us any reasons why. One might also suggest that there are political reasons here as well. Perhaps the pentagon is waiting a little for that political firestorm to die down in the United States before they decide to transfer him. The other interesting detail coming out from pentagon officials as well is that bergdahl may be owed up to 200,000 in back pay for the time that he was in captivity, but so far, no decision has been made to pay that money out until a judicial review is carried out as to why bergdahl walked off base and how he ended up in the taliban hands, christine. Yeah, an interesting detail. He was automatically promoted while he was away. Obviously, accruing his pay while he was away as well. Karl penhaul, thank you. And look, just by early 2013, bill clinton had made 106 million in speaking fees. And weve seen Hillary Clinton herself out there making quite a lot of money on the speaking circuit.
