In just a few moments, russian athletes will find out if they are going to the rio Olympic Games this year. Russia has been plagued by a doping scandal with 67 russian track and field athletes already banned from competing in rio. Will that ban be extended to the entire russian delegation. Jill, the International Olympic committee is going to announce its decision soon, if all the russian athletes will be banned. How will this affect the games at large . Reporter it would be a huge blow to russia, a huge blow to vladimir putin. And i can tell you that the entire city, the entire country here in russia is bracing for this crucial decision by the ioc whether or not the entire team will not be able to go. Thousands of emails surfaced from dnc staffers raising questions about how impartial the group was during the primaries specifically. Now the head of the dnc, Debbie Wasserman schultz will no longer have a speaking role at the convention this week. Furious at Wasserman Schultz for what they believe was favoritism to clinton during the campaign. Joe johns is following this story for us. Is Debbie Wasserman schultz, are we seeing her being the one held accountable to some degree . Reporter i think you can say that. I mean, this is not the way they wanted to get this started. The Party Continues to make concessions to the Bernie Sanders camp hoping to keep the peace. The Democratic Rules Committee just agreed on what sounds like a task force to reduce the number of super delegates. Still, there are calls for this accountability and sources in the Party Leadership widely acknowledge how awkward the situation is right now thanks to wikileaks. The decision not to have Wasserman Schultz speak is more than just the chair of the party sacrificing herself for the good of the process. She was criticized for showing favoritism for Hillary Clinton through the primaries. In an email from may, Debbie Wasserman schultz appears very upset with public statements by Sanders Campaign manager jeff weaver criticizing the Nevada Democratic party. She writes, damn liar, particularly scum my that he barely acknowledges the violent and threatening behavior that occurred. Quote, he is an ass. Very Strong Language there, christy. All righty. He is a Hillary Clinton supporter. And we have a supporter for Bernie Sanders during the primary. Scott, i want to start with you. Limited Wasserman Schultz to gaveling in, gaveling out, no major speaking role here. Its said to be an effort to keep the peace s. That from your perspective going to keep the peace . It certainly is a good start. This certainly isnt the way the Democratic Party wanted to start its convention. We certainly knew there were going to be issues between hillary and Bernie Sanders supporters. Even though Bernie Sanders has endorsed Hillary Clinton, hillary is going to be the nominee along with tim kaine. There are bigger tasks to be addressed in defeating donald trump. The lack of her having a significant speaking role is an important concession. At the same time, what happens behind the scenes and what shes saying to Bernie Sanders supporters and what these sanders supporters and the millry supporters are saying to each other to put this behind them and fall in line and take on the republicans is even more important than these emails. Its difficult to fall in line when you read emails like this. This is from may 5th from one dnc employee to three others there at the dnc. It might make, i think thats what theyre trying to say here, no difference, but for kentucky and West Virginia, can we get someone to ask his belief, does he believe in a god. He had skated in saying that he has a jewish heritage. I think i read that he is an athei atheist. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a jew and an atheist. You had said the dncs thumb was on the scale for Hillary Clinton. Will simply keeping the chairwoman from having a speaking role keep the peace . Thats a great question. I mean, this isnt the only thing they have done. This reveals a small slice of how the dnc operates. Thats why the Sanders Campaign is trying to use all the leverage it has. They won 47 of the vote. We are half the party. And i think that were trying to use the leverage right now to reform the party so that it can be more inclusive, clean up this culture so we dont have this type of language being used. That person should be fired. Forget about Debbie Wasserman schultz. Shes going to be ousted in january anyways. Its these people that are growing the party, they brought in new people and they gave a voice to a lot of the people in the party who felt disaffected like myself. Let me ask you before i go back to scott here. You said that Wasserman Schultz will be ousted in jan anyway. But to send a signal for sake of symbolism, should she step down before then . I think that she should use her role. I mean thats not my job. I think there are a lot of other asks we could make that are probably more important. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, should first issue apology. Clean up the culture. They should reform things like super delegates. The hillary delegation yesterday at the rules committee voted against reforming super delegates and getting rid of them. They want to create a commission. Through this commission, they should create real reforms like opening up the primaries, changing the way we fund our candidates and the Democratic Party. All this stuff is rooted in the culture of the Democratic Party which has lost its way. Tim kaine, as much as he has achieved in his history and his experience in washington, in Public Service, he was part of that culture. He is the person who changed the model from being the 50state strategy to the funding culture of the dnc being all about raising money. They dont find candidates who are Great Community leaders, who have great bases. They want candidates that can raise 250,000 in six week sdwls were going to continue this conversation. Stay with us. I think that Bernie Sanders who has won pretty much half the Party Support did not get enough out of what i have to be honest here. I think that theres so much that could have been done, so much negotiating. And from the way that the speakers relayed out, very few people have been Bernie Sanders speakers. The dais is stacked with Hillary Clinton supporters. Quite frankly, i think we should just eliminate super delegates. Elected officials are elected officials. They dont need to be propped up. One super delegate represents over 10 thoir,000 votes. One super delegate should not be weighted that way. Theyre mainly male and theyre mainly white. Thats exactly what they look like, too. It doesnt reflect the Democratic Party itself. Those are being held on both go ahead and yeah, please. The Bernie Sanders supporters, thats fine. The Democratic Party has a big tent and has welcomed them in. But 48 simply isnt the majority. You want to change rules. You want a party that is more progressive, then you win. He didnt get enough vote it would have been nice. You guys stacked it against it. The party has acknowledged that sanders has brought in these people, but you dont get to dictate the rules let me finish. [ multiple speakers ] go ahead, scott. You didnt get the majority. And thats how the Democratic Party and the political process in this country works. Now, we have acknowledged the supporters. We have compromised with the unity peace. Weve even allowed other progressive platforms planks in the platform. Thats what you get when you come up short. But if you want to change the rules, if you want to lead the party, then you win. And Bernie Sanders did not win. Hillary clinton did win. Fall in line and lets go beat donald trump. Okay, so scott, let me ask you this. I need to respond to this. This is exactly the problem. When you treat Bernie Sanders supporters like theyre outsiders were treating you like youre snydeinsiders. Let me finish. You brought us to the table because we won half the party. Less than half the party. He got massive reforms in the party after the contested convention. When ted kennedy was challenging our sitting president and went in and had a contested convention, he had counter reforms to the party. Bernie sanders has 46 of the vote but you dont have the majority. Win the nomination and you get what you want. But thats not how this works. Win the nomination and you get what you want. Let me jump in here. We understand that. So scott, let me ask you, because you you say he didnt she didnt get the majority. Lets face it, sanders has got a huge following. He has endorsed hillary already. The question is, do you have any concern that there might be some version of, sai, a ted cruz speech tomorrow night based on some of the things that shes bringing up and this wiki leaks. Well, i certainly hope not. Heres the thing, Bernie Sanders has endorsed Hillary Clinton. The Hillary Clinton people have done outreach. Theyve met at the table, theyve been on the rules committee and had these Ongoing Party discussions. We appreciate their activism and all the value that they brought to the table. So, no, i dont think hes going to be a bad democrat. Hes going to be a good democrat, so long as the discussions continue to go forward. Youre going to continue to see some managed negotiated concessions or discussions between both side. In the end, the Bernie Sanders really have nowhere else to go but to stay within this party. Theyre not going to trump. Theyre not going to the green party or the libertarian party. We dont know where theyre going. Thats not true. Unlike the republicans. You can say what you want to say. The bottom line is, were all great democrats. While we may be contesting some issues on an interparty basis, the bottom line is, weve got to defeat trump. The sanders supporters know that. And Bernie Sanders knows that as well. Look for him to endorse. Look for more concessions in regard to rules. But were going to win in november. And everyone under the democratic tent knows that. With all of that said, we know there are protests being planned by sanders supporters. Do you think it is important for sanders to come out and try to thwart that or talk to those people to try to bring unity to this part going into this dnc . Theres all different types of sanders supporters. He represented several movements. A lot of these movements feel like they havent been heard. I encourage the Clinton Campaign and tim kaine to listen to these people because theyre not going to fall in line. This is a year where our party has basically said, weve had enough. It is time that we change the way that we function. Its really important for the Clinton Campaign to reach out to these people, hear what theyre saying, listen to what theyre saying, feel what theyre saying. Not just values, symbolism. Putting something on stage that represents their values. The choice of tim kaine was not an indication. What happened in the rules committee yesterday was not an indication. They have a lot of work to do because we dont just fall in line anymore. Thats not our country. The party is 70 more progressive and the party reflects that as well already. A fiery debate here. Look, the truth of the matter is, these folks that were behind Bernie Sanders may not go to the polls at all. Yeah, and thats the big concern, i think. So there is some effort even on the Bernie Sanders side to sort of quell some of the anger in the background. He put out a statement this morning making it clear that in his speech on monday, he plans to hit all the right notes, if you will, citing Hillary Clinton as far superior to donald trump in almost every area. But also, giving himself a bit of a tip of the hat, talking about some of the things that he got the Hillary Clinton people to agree to as part of the negotiation coming into this convention. So hes going to try to quell some of that anger, at the same time, cite Hillary Clinton as far superior to donald trump in an attempt to bring this party together. All right. Joe johns. Lets talk about that real quickly. Im wondering if where is the value being placed here when we listen to donald trump . There is an allegiance with nato and all of the countries that are involved there. Is it smart to seemingly put the protections of other countries against the shortterm financial goals . I think you have to look at this, what is the goal here. If you want to i dont think mr. Trump is going to leave any country unprotected. Thats just not the tradition of america in the past. What hes saying, were the United States is burning 72 of all defense expenditures that the Nato Alliance is having. We are putting in more than all of the other countries together. And we have to do something to equal it back out, to make them pay their dues to belong to this club. Its a duefree membership to the country club, yet when something happens they expect them to come protect them. He just said we wouldnt. He said, you look at these little countries and the other question is, were sitting here we got to do something to make these countries step up to protect them. We also have to make them also be responsible as well. We are in a war right now. We have a war on terror. A lot of these countries right now are continuing not to help us with this. Let me jump in here. The point that was just brought up, you kind of brushed by. Donald trump says, they got to pay the bill, then we will certainly defend them. You said, were not going to leave anyone undefended. And you say well, and move on. Is donald trump advocating for you have to make sure you pay that percentage in order to have that nato protection as an ally or you dont . You got to be on one side of the line here and i didnt hear on which side of the line you believe donald trump truly is. Nato was started after world war ii. The question is, how do you make these other countries step up and pay their commitments. Its not just one year. Its year after year after year. The United States has taken on this burden. Maybe in the past weve been financially able to. With 19 trillion in debt, we have to find some way to make sure these countries fulfill their commitment. I still dont know if we got an answer to that, which side of the line donald trump will be on or not. Its certainly one thing to say that each party or each nation needs to pay 2 of their Gross National product. No one would disagree with that. Whether theyre in a position to do that is a whole nother story. This nato treatcy is one of the most powerful and successful in the history of this world. Its another thing to say as the republican nominee that youre not going to defend them, youre going to violate the treaty if they havent paid their dues. Its amateurist. It makes no sense whatsoever. Even the hawk and the defense experts in the Republican Party have called it the way it is, and that is that its its its a mistake or its an amateurist move on their part. This is the fundamental policy difference and why politicly that donald trump just, one, isnt sophisticated, but, two, our enemies hearing him say that gives fodder to them to believe that if he becomes president that they if they invade eastern yierp or western europe that there is a possibility a possibility that the u. S. Will not be there. Where theyve been there before. Thats dangerous. Let me finish. That is dangerous for a nominee youre going on and on. Im going on and on because its a dangerous statement and a dumb statement by trump. What is the solution . I think theyre violating the treaty when they dont uphold their part of it. Youre absolutely right. So then what is your solution . I agree. Thats something very important. Youre absolutely right about that. They have to be pushed [ multiple speakers ] go ahead. These names, theyre getting confusing. What has the administration done . Go ahead. They have continued to uphold their part of nato for one. Two, theyve pushed for these other countries, if theyre financially in a position to pay the dues and pay the cost, theyve pushed them to do that. Remember, the alliance is about more than these dues. Its about the strategic advantage and the strategic need for them where theyre located and to be part of the totality of an International Defense system that has made us safer in this country and made western europe safer in this country and made all of those countries safer under this treaty. If you could give us an idea of the mood there and what the expectation is there in moscow of what the International Olympic committees decision will be. Reporter well, i can tell you, there are probably 387 russian athletes who do want to go to rio who are sitting there on pins and needles waiting to find out what the ioc is going to say. You know, russias position is there may be some people who have doped, but the people who havent doped should be allowed to go and you shouldnt p punish an entire country because of the sins of may be a few. The ioc looks at it completely differently saying this is a state sponsored program. So its not only the athletes of course, president putin who in the kremlin is looking at this, wondering what the decision will be. Right now, there is a lot of doubt that they will be able to go, quite frankly. Decision hasnt been made, but that seems to be the feeling. A lot of the feeling is to blame the United States. Many here think the United States is out to get russia, had sanctions against them economically et cetera and that america essentially wants to demean and destroy russia. Thats the mood. We know that the sochi games were supposed to be russias entry back onto the world stage. Just a few years later and potentially the russian delegation will be banned from the rio games. Rosa, what will be the impact beyond just the number of athletes there of if the ioc decides this ban on the entire russian delegation . Reporter these games are supposed to be all about athletes achieving their dreams, breaking records. Instead, here we are talking about possible doping and the possible ban of the entire russian delegation. Definitely not a good thing, especially since rio has already been plague d by so many other dram dramas involving zika, the political turmoil, crime, Security Issues involve terror. It is just another shadow on these games when people here just want to play the games. The latest poll shows that 50 of brazilians are against the games, not because of doping or any of these other issues, but simply because of the issues in this country. I want to read one of the emails released as part of this 20,000 email trove released by wikileaks. This is a may 3rd email after sanders won the indiana primary. One of the lines here is what does her loss mean last night other than he raised 4 million and is more obnoxious. It appears that the dnc was treating him as an annoyance. Theres no question that the some of these emails, timing of the emails is embarrassing and unfortunate. By the way, one of the more unexplored parts of this story, these leaks were done by Russian Hackers and looking at the connections between trump and russia and putin, you know, as tim kaine pointing out, putin being the only person trump hasnt criticized. These leaks seem intended to help donald trump. First of all, we should point that out. Second, look, theyre unfortunate, theyre embarrassing. By bernie friends are going to hate me for saying this, if we looked at the other side, there would be emails there as well. Ive read them in the dnc emails, there are emails that show they were trying to create a very fair process going over and above to try to make sure the process was fair. You can cherry pick. Let me just do these emails validate those concerns . You can complain about the rules, complain about the super delegates, complain about the process. The fact of the matter is the rules were the rules and he did lose. That hurt for me. It hitter furt for a lot of peo. If you dont like it, engage with the party. I think thats also a fair point to make here. Scott, let me come to you. There was something you said last hour in the discussion with scottie nel hughes. You said theyre not going to go to trump, theyre not going to go to a third party. Essentially you said they will be good democrats. What is your degree of concern that theyre just not motivated by Hillary Clinton as the nominee and just wont show up as all in november . I dont think thats going to be the case because these are party activists. These are folks who want a more progressive agenda. I think my colleague is absolutely right. Stay involved, stay active. The dnc is working with them on a regular basis. Listen, ive headed a Democratic State committee. There are also interparty fighting. There are people who work with our organization as well as the dnc who supported different individuals during the primary. Youre going to have that. These emails were individualisticly drif iven, bo is that a word. In washington, we should all know better. Im not concerned about them going to the Trump Campaign because that would be regressive, if you will, and make it more difficult for them to get a progressive agenda. The vote for a green party or libertarian candidate is a wasted vote and one less vote for Hillary Clinton. And Hillary Clinton and tim kaine are our best shot at continues to move america forward, stronger together were going to hear them this week. Sally, let me come to you. Is it possible or even credible to think that this convention can now go on as scheduled without having one of the headliners address the elephant in the room . You know, i dont know. There is a percent of bernie supporters in particular im sure democrats across the board may be concerned by some of these emails, who are worried about this. They were already upset. The larger point here, a larger percentage of bernie supporters now are backing Hillary Clinton than hillary supporters backed barack obama in 2008. So this timing of this is incredibly unfortunate. Its also incredibly strategic for whomever helped to leak those documents because the party actually is coming together. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders have far more in common than they dont. Weve seen Hillary Clinton move toward Bernie Sanders. We saw the Democratic Party platform move toward Bernie Sanders. Were going to see this convention be a unified, progressive, bold, visionary, positive agenda for this party, for the country in stark contrast with the hate, seine fophone xenophobia and regression of the republican. So you have that email from may, Debbie Wasserman schultz appears to be very upset with public statements by Sanders Campaign manager jeff weaver criticizing the Nevada Democratic party. She writes, particularly scummy that he barely acknowledges the violent and threatening behavior that occurred. You have weaver saying we should go to the convention with Wasserman Schultz saying he is an ass. Its very tough language. The kind of language you hear in politics all the time, but these are democrats talking about each other and just sort of plays into the narrative that the Bernie Sanders people have been pushing for some time. We get into this conversation about how safe are the things that we say in emails and online. Are you sensing any anxiety in washington since this has happened that more could be coming . She has to show that at a time when Many Americans are skeptical about the role of government, about the fact they believe that government in both parties have failed to make things better, that she can take the existing political system and make it work, improve peoples lives. Donald trumps entire political position basically is, weve got to blow this whole thing up, politicians have fixed this, people like Hillary Clinton, barack obama, and some Republican Leaders have been unable to make things better, so we need an outsider. Conventions are also about conjuring up a vision of a country. You have to get people to buy in to your vision and narrative of the country. She told us he was a loner and he was always bullied at school. Now, this, police believe, may have been the motivation for the attack. In fact, im going to ask my camera to swing around. Were actually right by the mcdonalds where the shooting happened. Theyve sort of cordoned off that area there. In that area outside of the mcdonalds, a lot of teenagers were sitting. Most of the victims were teenagers. Police and prosecutors now believe that he may have intentionally lured teenagers there in the hope of targeting them specifically. So were still waiting for more details. We will have a press conference from the prosecutor later today. But the picture that were getting here is of a really a teenager who felt bullied and was seeking some sort of revenge and this rage took the form of this horrific shooting. One of the things they truly have in common is that they are both safe choices. We know this is an election with two big personalities. I think that was important in picking both of them with somebody who would stand by each of these candidates sides, but also not take away from the message theyre trying to put forward. Reporter the city of philadelphia is preparing for 50,000 protestors every day while the dnc is on. This is what it looks like here at the wells fargo center. This is about the area where the protestors will be able to get to. Through the barriers on the other side is the wells fargo center. We are on broad street in south philadelphia. If you kept going up that way, youd get right into the center, the heart of philadelphia, where the declaration of independence was signed. Youre seeing these trucks everywhere on the areas going into this area to prevent a sort of nice like attack. With so many protestors in this area, Franklin Dell another roosevelt park. There will be protests throughout the city, though, is what the city is dealing with. That presents them with two problems. One, they want to keep the protestors themselves safe so they can protest and have their say, but they also dont want them to get out of control. They also want the delegates to be able to go abandoned their business. 6,000 Police Officers from the city of philadelphia alone. Thousands more from across the country. According to the New York Times, more women have come forward accusing ailes of sexual advances. And according to the report, the accusations go far beyond ailes. Brian stelter has been all over this. There are some damning details in this new report. Reporter yes, thats absolutely right. Now, the attention is turning not just to roger ailes and his alleged behavior, but also to a wider issue of Workplace Culture inside the Television News room at fox news. Let me show you what the New York Times says, interviewing more than a dozen women about the conditions in the workplace. They said these women described forms of Sexual Harassment or intimidation at fox news and fox business. Two of them actually cited mr. Ailes directly saying ailes was the instigator of harassment. In some cases, these were inappropriate comments made. In other cases, managers tried to set up employees on dates with supervisors. All in all, this is an issue for 21st century fox, for the Murdoch Family that actually owns fox news. Because mr. Ailes has been removed. He resigned effective immediately. Many of the other top executives at the network are still in charge, are still running the ship. There are more and more claims of harassment, inappropriate behavior in fox news. That could be a wider problem for the Company Going forward. Gretchen carlson filed this lawsuit that began this. Shes now speaking. What is she saying . Reporter in some ways, this is a celebratory moment for her. But in other ways, it is not. She is alleging pervasive Sexual Harassment by ailes. To see him forced out under pressure was in some ways a victory for her. However, her lawsuit is Going Forward, is moving forward. She has said on twitter that she is provided to see other women stepping forward and speaking out. At the end of the day, shes still out of the job. She lost her job because of retaliation for not engaging in sexual behavior with roger ailes. Ailes denies these charges. He says that what Gretchen Carlson is saying is not true and did not happen. We want to emphasize this isnt just a few cities here and there, this really stretches from california all the way over to the carolinas and really everywhere in between. And the reason for this, well, we can blame it on the dome of High Pressure. You hear that term, heat dome, but what exactly does that mean . Lets break it down for you. Here you can see weve got our city all laid out for us in the dome of High Pressure that is built over top. Now, you have the sun that begins to heat the surface of the earth. As it naturally does, especially in summertime. But here is the thing, naturally hot air rises so that heat begins to lift, but the High Pressure dome traps it and basically sends it right back down with the sinking air back down to the surface and thats how you get that heat that builds around a lot of these cities that we see. As you know, somebody hacked into the dnc computer and wikileaks recently published a bunch of these emails and there are a number of emails in which senior officials of the Democratic National committee can be seen conspiring against Bernie Sanders, talking about how his faith should be asked about before the kentucky or West Virginia primaries, talking about hit pieces to pitch to reporters about his campaign allegedly being in disarray. It is ugly and, you know, as they say, it aint paranoia if theyre actually out to get you. The effect will be big. We need to see what is Bernie Sanders going to say, how is this going to impact the millions of americans who voted for Bernie Sanders, one of the reasons for which was because they hated what they saw as a corrupt political system and voila, here is evidence of that corrupt political system. It is a potential bombshell and well see how it impacts the philadelphia Democratic Convention. You dont think there is any chance that, especially since there have been some concessions made we should say regarding super delegates role at their convention, there is no there is no chance that Bernie Sanders is going to pull out of his role at the convention, he is still solidly behind hillary, yes . I think so. The Sanders Campaign, the sanders apparatus put out a statement this morning saying that Bernie Sanders is going to be speaking, i believe, monday night and he still stands very much behind Hillary Clinton. So i think that was trying to show people that sanders, despite the dnc leak, still on board, but do you know something, i have no idea whats going to happen. Even if sanders does express fullthroated support for Hillary Clinton there is no whitewashing the fact that these emails really reveal something very untoward and if you are a sanders supporter, something very disturbing. Senior officials at the Democratic National committee conspiring against somebody pursuing the democratic president ial nomination, despite the fact that the dnc insisted the whole time that they were staying neutral. These emails show they were not staying neutral. They were openly conspiring against a democratic president ial candidate and that could really make some ugly headlines here in philadelphia. Yeah. Its interesting because i think a lot of people came out of out of cleveland thinking, boy, that was a roller coaster with the Republican National convention, look at what were heading into with the dnc.
