When its now. We have breaking news in the race for president. We are here and here feels like Bernie Sanders. The vermont senator, he just released new fund raising numbers. 34. 5 million in the fourth quarter. And youre going to remember this quarter for him started with a heart attack three months ago. That is an impressive number. We have a couple other numbers in at this point. You can see former south bend mayor Pete Buttigieg raised about 24. 7 million. Businessman andrew yang, 16. 5 million. We want to also note, this is a little bit different, little apples and oranges right now. The president s Campaign Announced 46 million for the last quarter. Back to the democrats, though, that is whats important this morning. The Iowa Caucuses just one month away. We could hear from the warren and biden campaigns soon on their numbers. Also we want to bring you these dramatic, remarkable, troubling images of the extent of the damage at the u. S. Embassy in baghdad. The iranbacked militia have withdrawn from protesting at that compound. Theyve had two days of clashing with Security Forces there. Still the tension between u. S. And iran remains high as highlighted by these images. Well bring you to baghdad for a live report from arwa damon in a moment. But joining us here, lets begin with those numbers. Cnn washington correspondent ryan nobles, alex burns. Lets walk through these numbers. 34. 5 million bucks for sanders. He began the quarter with people questioning if he could even keep running after the heart attack. Even people that supported Bernie Sanders wondered whether or not he would have staying pa you are. Theres no doubt weve seen a reinvigorated campaign since the heart attack. These numbers show us just how strong his support remains with the core group of people that have been with him from the beginning. Couple things i want to point out about the way hes raising this money. This is all online small dollar donations average about 18 bucks a donation. 99. 9 of the people that have donated to the campaign have the ability to continue donating. They havent come anywhere near that 2800 threshold. Get this, guys. He raised 18 million just in the month of december. That shows his momentum is growing. There is beginning to be more of a realization that he could actually win the iowa caucus. And thats exactly the position you need to be on on january 2nd when we are now just about a month away from voters actually heading to those caucus sites. As we see those numbers for Bernie Sanders and you think about the possibility that maybe he will or could win in iowa. What does that mean for the campaign . What does that mean for the democrats . Where are we headed . Well, i think thats a thats certainly a question that will be answered in the coming weeks, but theres no doubt that Bernie Sanders has enjoyed the momentum right now. And in terms of what it means for the campaign, one interesting i do namic is while Bernie Sanders has had that durability kind of throughout the campaign season, he hasnt been attacked so viciously by the other candidates as perhaps some of the other candidates have gotten in the race. Youve seen obviously the former Vice President joe biden. Senator Elizabeth Warren. Now former south bend mayor Pete Buttigieg all kind of take their turns being having the arrows thrown at them as a front runner. Now that Bernie Sanders is really has really solidified himself as a front runner in the race, itll be interesting to see how the other campaigns respond now in terms of what this may mean for the Broader Campaign while obviously senator sanders has this popularity, has durability with democratic voters. Republicans are very eager to seize on his positions. Among the more progressive positions on health care or Climate Change and whatnot in the democratic race which could be the appealing part to the democratic voters. Eager to make that contract should he become the nominee. Alex, the way that Bernie Sanders has raised this money will small dollar donations is very notable. They can keep giving more. Most havent reached a threshold. Also akin to the way that Elizabeth Warren has raised money. No wine caves for either of them. But her numbers, theyll come out at some point. Could be in the next few minutes. Could be in the next few hours. And her team a week ago trying to set expectations that doesnt look like theyre going to be as strong as last quarter. Maybe the number the sort of number to beat for them was 20 million which would be less than she raised last quarter. More than the quarter before that. I think joe biden is expected to sort of cross the 20 million mark but certainly not hit 35 million or not near 35 million. Look, these are all campaigns that are going to have the resources. When you look at somebody like buttigieg, like warren, like yang, youre looking at people who have the money to make it to south carolina. The question is do they have the fund raising muscle to compete beyond that. Bernie sanders has a fund raising operation that can do that for him. Its far from clear that anybody else in the raise does. Lets give a sense of people give people a sense, rather, of where this race stands this morning. The National Poll from a couple weeks ago has joe biden out in front at 26 , sanders 20 , warren 16 , buttigieg 8 , bloomberg at 5 . Thats the National Poll. We dont have really good recent polling from iowa, some of the more recent stuff we have includes the cbs poll from iowa which basically showed a threeway tie, fourway tie close to the top there. So, ryan, where do you see this race . You dont have to call it the 2020 race. Its the now race. Where is it . The Sanders Campaign would look at those numbers and make the argument that they have the advantage because of those resources they have at their disposal. And because the iowa caucus requires so much effort to bring people out for four hours on a random tuesday night. Could be very cold and windy in iowa. Youve got to have the organization on the ground to make that happen. Remember, Bernie Sanders almost won the iowa caucus four years ago without those Organizational Resources at his disposal. And now he has this. And the other argument they would make is that the volume of his donors, hes had somewhere in the range of 5 million individual contributions. People that have donated individually. They would argue that shows that theres a level of support for him thats not necessarily reflected in the polls. And they believe that a lot of his support reers are people no necessarily participating in the process before. So they would love to be able to go into iowa with a tie because they think that theyve got the skin in the game and on the ground to overcome that tie and then, you know, coast to victory. One of the most consistent features of the polling in the early states as ryan certainly knows is the candidate who supporters are least likely to say they are open to i think chaing their mind is Bernie Sanders. When you look at those numbers in iowa were buttigieg, warren, between the three other candidates at the top of the pack in iowa and new hampshire. You can see a lot of movement. Buttigieg to biden, biden to warren, et cetera. Those sanders folks are really very unlikely to go anywhere else. And the biggest problem had been growing that base of support. If he starts adding people and they get locked in, you stick with him. So the idea that hes growing, they feel is a very good sign. On top of all of that, m. J. Lee smartly brought this up last hour, the fact that Bernie Sanders is not holding the big dollar fund raisers. Nothing in wine caves, et cetera. And he has been able to surpass by a long shot here by 10 million bucks Pete Buttigieg who is doing that. And likely others who are about to give numbers. How significant is that alone . I think its significant in a number of ways. Obviously shows he will continue to have the you can continue to reach out to these sources of funding and have the resources for the long run. But also just gives him a good message in the democratic primary as the issue of Campaign Finance has become so important to democratic voters and sort of that purity, if you will, of not doing high dollar fund raisers or not taking donations from certain sources. We saw how contentious of an issue that became in the last several weeks. Especially in the last democratic primary. There was a big spat between mayor pete and senator warren over the wine cave issue. So i think sanders being able to kind of rise above that saying im able to raise this amount of money without having to do those spending time with these high dollar donors. Especially as we noted earlier, the Trump Campaign really seeing sizable numbers this morning. Bernie can point to that saying i could be able to match the fund raising prowess of President Trump. And i think thats an Important Message to get across for senator sanders. All right. There is some breaking news out of iowa. Which is that congresswoman abby finkenhour is the second youngest member of congress besides alexandria ocasiocortez is endorsing joe biden for president. So there are three Democratic House members in iowa. Only one has endorsed so far and it just came this morning. Abby finkenhour endorsing joe biden. I dont know whether one endorsement means much or not. But were waiting for bidens fund raising numbers. Were expecting better than last quarter which were poor for him. Where does he sit this morning . Look, i think abbys endorsement is important for a couple different reasons. I think it shows where a lot of those vulnerable first term democrats are inclined to go in this primary. That she was just elected last year. Shes got a tough reelection fight ahead of her. And for joe biden in this last month to be able to crisscross iowa with her by his side and make the case that he does actually have appeal across the generations, he does actually have appeal to folks who are rising leaders in the party, not just the leaders of yesterday. And to say, look. Bernie sanders and Elizabeth Warren have some of these prominent democrats like aoc, like ayanna pressley, here i am campaigning alongside a 31yearold freshman democratic woman member of the house who actually has a tough election in front of her. Thats something none of the others can claim. And she worked for him, volunteered for his campaign in 2008. Right. He needs to perform well on the campaign trail in a way he hasnt always in the past. But if he closes strong, i think you are going to hear more voices from those folks who see him as the safest guy at the top o the ticket. Hes still been pretty durable. Hes still leading the National Polls. If we write his obituary, hes still in a strong position heading into iowa. Thank you to all three of you. Now to shocking new images of the damage done to the u. S. Embassy in baghdad. Take a look at this. Okay . This is what the reception area of americas largest embassy looks like this morning. Of course this is after proyooimpb protesters vandalized it trying to storm the compound. But the pentagon is still sending hundreds of troops to the region lets go to arwa damon live in baghdad. Good morning, arwa. Reporter good morning, poppy. Yes, this is a situation that is far from resolved. Those protesters who are not ordinary protesters, worth pointing that out once again. Rather members of or supporters of a shia paramilitary unit that is ostensibly under the umbrella of the iraqi Security Forces have withdrawn to another location just across the tigress river. Kataib hezbollah that was the target of the air strikes on sunday put out a statement saying this was done based on an understanding that the Iraqi Parliament would within a week begin working towards legislation, working towards a bill that would address the u. S. Troop presence in iraq. They continue to state that their main goal of ridding iraq of all foreign soldiers, all Foreign Military presence is going to be their main goal. They say there are other steps they can take. There is this growing concern here over what is unfolding not just for the stability of iraq itself but also when it comes to this proxy battle that we have been seeing unfolding for quite some time now, it must be said, between washington and tehran. And there has been rhetoric that has been traded between the trump administration, President Trump himself on twitter, as well as senior members within the Iranian Military and political apparatus. One of the top iranian commanders has effectively told the United States that it should watch its language when it comes to how it is addressing iran and what it is threatening iran with saying that while they are not looking for a war, they are not afraid of one. And also going on to say that they can damage the u. S. A lot more than they already have, john. So you have this extraordinarily tense situation right now in a country that is already very, very fragile. I think both sides waiting to see the next move. Where does it go next . The reason im here is because of thousands of people, thousands of people over the years who have done so much. Youre responsible for it and the league is in spectacular shape Going Forward under the extraordinary leadership of adam silver. Thank you for having me. Good night. That was thennba commissioner david stern discussing his retirement in 2014. Stern passed away yesterday from a brain hemorrhage. He was 77 years old. Condolences have come in from far and wide. Joining me now is ernie johnson, host of tnts inside the nba. Thank you for being with us right now. Obviously you knew him. Just tell me about the man. John, thanks for having me on and happy new year to you. He was a character. And he was an innovator. He was a visionary and he was the best to hold the title of commissioner in all of sports. He was driven. And you could tell by those working for him that he demanded a certain measure of excellence in everything that you did. Shoot, ive been at tnt for 30 years doing inside the nba. So he was there that entire time. You know, i interviewed him at the end of his tenure which was exactly 30 years to the day from when he began. The way you see the nba these days, Global Impact of the game, the wnba, the development, the gleague. All of that came from this vision that david stern had. And so i think when you you know, when you marvel at some of the young players, you see like the luka doncics of the world in dallas whos only 20 years old. These are kids who grew up watching david stern shake the hand of a draftee and said i want to be that guy. I want to be on that stage when that commissioner shakes my hand. You know, it was adam silver for doncic, but it was for all those lebron james and the rest. And i think thats been one of the coolest things about the last couple of days. All these players who have postpost ed that picture of draft night, of standing there with david stern and having a dream realized. He was as much an icon in this as anybody who played the game. Michael jordon who is the preeminent icon of anyone who ever played the game said without david stern the nba would not be what it is today. He guided the league through Turbulent Times and grew the league into an International Phenomenon and creating opportunities that for could have imagined before. To give a sense of how the league exploded during this tun year, a few years before he took over, the nba finals some of the games were tape delayed. People couldnt even see some of the nba final games live. Imagine that now. Talking about the value of the teams, the bulls sold for 16 million the year he came on. Now theyre selling for 2 billion. The gleague as you were saying, the dream team, the wnba, the idea of these international stars. None of that none of that existed before david stern. He really made this cultural phenomenon more than just a sport. Or he helped alongside the players like jordan and barkley make it this International Phenomenon. It was the perfect combination. It was the personalities on the floor. It was larry bird and Magic Johnson coming along. You know, coming out of the College Ranks and bringing their rivalry there. But it was having the man in place david stern who said, okay. Now we have these pieces. How do we get the best out of this . And he was able to do that with his vision and looking far beyond, you know, the sidelines and far beyond the borders of the United States to say this can be a global phenomenon. He did exactly that. And he was you know, hes a tough guy. He was a tough negotiator. He was a lawyer who was and who got what he wanted most of the time. But it but to me it was never im doing this because this is going to be a feather in my cap or because i want it. Its because this is going to make the league better. This is going to make the product better. So i think he always had, you know, the best of the league at heart and he was so driven to getting the league to that point. And ive seen that for 30 years worth now. I have to let you go, ernie, because were out of time here but these drafts, the nba draft. He would get booed like all commissioners do. But he would get booed every draft. Im dying to know how he felt about that. He you know, it didnt really bother him. But on draft night it was tough for me. Because i did the draft for several years and i would, you know, have to throw back to the thing. Id get the producer in my ear saying the commissioner is ready with a pick, get it to him. Meanwhile, ive got brown who is like moases when he comes down with the tablets when hes talking about basketball. But i have to cut him off. And go back to the podium and hes waiting impatiently and gives me that look. And then the next time i say, okay, the commissioner is ready and he stood backstage and would wait about 30 seconds before hed come out. Just to see me tap dance and have to fill time and say, like, dont mess with me. When they say the commissioners ready with a pick, you get it to me. So he was that kind of a guy and ill always remember nights like that. But he was a beauty. He really was. Ill tell you what. Adam silver could not have learned from a better mentor than david stern. Ernie johnson, thanks so much for being with us this morning helping us remember david stern. A man who really was in charge for a really long time and did so much. Thanks for being with us. Happy new year. Thank you very much and right back at you. And my grand kids call my papi. So back to poppy and john. Ernie, people tell me their grandparents or dogs are called poppy. Ernie, that was a beautiful remembrance of david. Thank you for that. We appreciate it. You got it. Its my pleasure. Have a great new year. You too. Ahead, a republican senator now says shes open to witnesses in the Senate Impeachment trial. But listen to her words. When she would want those witnesses, thats really key. Well discuss next. U for a nasty cold, take dayquil severe with vicks vapocool. Whoa and vaporize it with an intense rush of vicks vapors. Ahhhhhhhhhh dayquil severe with vicks vapocool. The daytime, coughing, stuffy head, vaporize your cold, medicine. I am open to witnesses. I think its premature to decide who should be called until we see the evidence that is presented and get the answers to the questions that we senators can submit through the chief justice to both sides. That is republican senator Susan Collins talking about President Trumps Senate Impeachment trial, if there is one. Senator Mitch Mcconnell wants a trial which will be in total coordination with the white house. Joining me now is charlie dent and rick santorum. Happy new year. Happy new year. Congressman dent, let me begin with you. I understand you know Susan Collins quite well. Let me start with you because if you listen to her words, it sounds like shes in total agreement on the witnesses part of this with Mitch Mcconnell. Because shes saying, wait until the middle of the trial and then see who you need to call. Is that how you hear it . Yeah. It seems to me that senator collins certainly supports bringing witnesses to this trial. The only question for her is the timing and who. So i think she wants to hear all the facts and see the evidentiary record before calling some of these witnesses. But i think we all know who those witnesses will likely be. People like the chief of staff mulvaney, perhaps pompeo, blair, duffey, others. Its clear who the witnesses will be. I think shes just quibbling about the timing. It sounds like you think the witnesses will be called. Do you . Well, i think they i think there should at least be some witnesses called. Maybe sha should be video depositions like they did during the clinton trial. Rick knows certainly more about that than i do. But bottom line, i think there should be witnesses. I think thats why were having a trial here. I dont think the senate should rush this thing the way the house rushed their proceeding just to meet an arbitrary deadline of christmas. Given the report revealing the meeting with pompeo and esper and bolton at the end of august raises more questions. Do you agree with the congressman . Should there be witnesses . I think there very well may be witnesses. I highly doubt any of the people charlie mentioned are going to be called as witnesses. I think what most senators believe is that the house has the duty to make the case. The ones that put together the record. And the record will be what the house put together. You know, its not the duty of the senate to do their job. And to further investigate things. What the second charge is all about is the fact these people didnt testify. And that and that those records werent made available. So theres a double edged sword for democrats when it comes to that second charge. Number one, having these witnesses come even if they would come, there might be resistance on the part of these people to come and testify. Again, do you want to drag this out for another however long it takes the court to do it. I think its unlikely these people will testify. And, you know, well have a trial that will be a rehash of what the house record is. Rick, if you were still in the senate, who would your key questions be for . Meaning, what witness or witnesses would you want to be called . Yeah, again, if you look at the two separate charges that are leveled out there, the second one is on obstruction of justice. There isnt really a whole lot of witnesses there to call. Thats just a legal matter or dispute between the two branches of government. So im not sure theres any witnesses that would be appropriate in that case. On the first matter, again, all the people that testified in the house, their record is pretty clear. There may be additional questions. Thats what happened back in 1999. We had additional questions of the o witnesses on the record for the house impeachment. And we wanted to big in a little bit more. I think thats more likely going to be the case in the senate when those witnesses are called. All right. Well, someone who will be in focus in the senate trial is the chief justice of the Supreme Court john roberts. He will have a key role in that. He could have a lot of power to compel some folks to talk. Let me ask you both about what he said in his sort of end of the year statement that he put out. He does this every year. Two years ago it was about defending the dependence of the judiciary. Then the me too movement. This year, heres a line that struck berman and i in his remarks. Quote, in our age when social media can spread rumors on a grand scale, the publics need to understand our government and the protections it provide is even more vital. Do you think, congressman dent, there was any message he was sending to 1600 pennsylvania avenue . I think thats quite likely. And good for john roberts for standing up and defending democracy, defending democratic institutions, defending an independent judiciary, a free media, rule of law. He should be doing those things. Because those institutions are under for assault. Not just in this country but throughout the world. So i think its important that john roberts say that. On a personal note, my father and john roberts worked together right here at the plant. Im sitting next to the plant where they had worked for years in the early 80s. So just wanted to share that. Wow. Yeah. Thats a great i had no idea. What about you, senator santorum . I mean, the fact that he chooses his words very carefully. And especially in his end of the year message to send. How important is it to hear that from him . Let me talk about the broader message first which i think is actually a message to members of the judiciary for, you know, getting involved in political decisions and not having the rule of law be the guide of what you do. I think you saw a lot of judges in the past year or two make decisions that look to be more personal against this president and not necessarily based on the law. So i think there was a little bit of a, you know, slap at some of those judges. And i would agree the social media slap certainly was directed at the president. I think it was as a judge should be. Even handed in meeting out the criticism. Gentlemen, thank you very much. Got a busy week ahead and a busy year ahead. Well be seeing you a lot. Appreciate it. Happy few year. Reporter well, john, as you know President Trump has frequently made chicago a punching bag of his. But this is now the third year in a row were seeing double digit declines in crime percentagewise. There are other cities, however, who hope the start of this new year, the new decade will reset what has become a violent narrative. While Mass Shootings at times leave the country in disbelief, in places like baltimore and chicago, gun violence is a grim part of life. But st. Louis which had the highest murder rate saw an increase in homicides compared to 2018. And baltimore ended with just under 350. Cities like new york and los angeles didnt even hit that mark and they have more than five times the people. We can talk all day about what to do after someone is killed, but we must also have a hard conversation about why the perpetrators of violence have no regards for human life. Yes support continues to pour in for civil rights icon congressman john lewis after he announced he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Lewis who famously marched alongside dr. Martin luther king jr. In selma says hell begin treatment in the coming days. Joining me is professor eric dyson from georgetown university. The author of the new book jayz made in america. Congressman lewis writes, i have decided to do what i know what to do and do what ive always done. Im going to fight it and keep fighting for the beloved community. We still have many bridges to cross. I wonder what your reaction was when you heard the news about congressman lewis . Hes an extraordinary american. A Great American hero. A man born in poverty in alabama, the son of share croppers, went to college in tenness tennessee, became one of the first students involved in the sitin movement and at 23 years old became part of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and joined with the six big leaders with Martin Luther king jr. To handle the march on washington. He was the youngest speaker, the only living speaker from that day. Went on famously to be involved with selma and to be bloodied in his attempt to get Public Transportation in this nation desegregated as a freedom rider, one of the first 13 and after that in 1987 being elected to congress, now in his 17th term. This man is an american heroic figure. When you contrast his statesmanship, being on the front line, having received blows in defense of freedom, trying to make sure that america could become all that it was meant to be, in his own body, he suffered for the redemption of this nation. When you contrast that highminded, morally sensitive leadership to what we have now it is even more the case that people around the globe embrace john lewis, pray for him, want him to continue to thrive and survive because he represents the best of who we are. There are generations of americans and people around the world who havent been alive in the civil rights struggle without john lewis. There are generations of members of congress who havent been there without john lewis to serve as a bit of a moral guidepost there. Thats a great point. Sometimes that can be taken for granted. Thats an excellent point. He is, after all, the conscience of the congress. People dont know any other Congress Without him, any other struggle for civil rights without him. Hes a powerful symbol of what is achievable when americans put their hands to the plow so to speak, when they look forward and refuse to ignore the white supremacy, social injustice, economic inequality, the struggle against all forms of oppression, no matter what its face looks like. John lewis represents for so many millions who have never known a day on this earth without his extraordinary struggle and eloquent articulation. And think about it. He gave a speech in 1963 at the march on washington. They had to edit that speech. He was disappointed the Kennedy Administration had not been more vocal. He wanted to talk about the 64 civil rights bill that didnt include provisions about Police Brutality or voting. So he was a revolutionary figure from a young man, and yet hes matured into one of a Great American leaders and statesmen because of his willingness and ability to face the problems we confront but to do it with love and to do it with justice and to do it with balance and unquestionable courage. Let me ask you about your book which came out last month. Jayz, made in america. This springs out of the class youve been teaching at georgetown. Jayz just turned 50 so happy birthday. Right. Youve chosen this as an area of Academic Research in a way to discuss, i think, so many broader issues. Why . Well, its a great point because hip hop is, this conversation is not discontinuous between one j. , john lewis and another j. , jayz because hip hop culture has been a lens for american society. A prism through which weve refracted the light of american ambition, desire, economically, wanting to be able o the come up, trying to get money, trying to make money, how do you deal with the suffering around you, put words to the horror that you confront. Jayz has been one of the most brilliant, articulate spokespeople for those whose backs are against the wall and are trying to talk about issues in american culture. Not only their money. But Police Brutality. So heres a figure who has not only talked about money and cash and that kind of thing. Hes also spoken about criminal justice reform, economic inequality, social injustice. How it is to be a poor black person growing up in brooklyn without resources that society then judges these young people for. Both of these figures in that way have used the resources that god gave them to amplify ideals and ideas that are critical to the reformation of american society. Just about a minute left. And you alluded to something there which is jayz is now a multibillionaire and something of a corporate icon. You say while its true that jayz has matured politically over the years, his obsession with hustling and capitalist aspirations may have blunted our appreciation for how woke hes been from the start. Hes been woke from the very beginning. Hes talked about slavery. Hes talked about criminal justice. Hes talked about the unfairness of being young and black and poor. Hes a person who has matured. Think about his progress from big pimpin, where hes celebrating toxic masculinity to apologizing for his wife for infidelity. This is a man who has taken on in public an extraordinary range of issues and in his own life revealed to us what the consequences are when a mature estimation of yourself matches your ability to change and transform and to inspire millions of others who look up to you. Professor michael eric dyson, always a plash to speak with you. Jayz made in america is the book. Im actually really looking forward to reading that. I ordered my own. I interviewed jayz three times and what always struck me is a lot of people just assume they know his political views, et cetera, and he had hes very politically involved and a ton to say about the systems that we have and how taxpayer money should be used and how best to help bring people up. Maybe you can audit the class. I would love to sit in the back there. Watching. For international viewers, cnn newsroom is next. For our u. S.
