Standing firm on the demand for witnesses. The case is stronger and remarkably so. How long will the democrats hold out . Ly speak to the Intelligence Committee chairman adam chef ahead. Adam schiff ahead. Hello, im jake tapper in washington where the state of the union is wondering whats next and when. Tensions between the uts and iran seem to be ratcheting up almost by the hour as President Trump escalates the threats against the hostile nation days after he ordered a Deadly Strike against baghdad and the top general. A military adviser tells cnn that the country will respond by targeting military sites. And the president was tweeting to the iranian government up to the wee hours of the morning including saturday night saying, quote, let this serve as a warning that if iran targets any americans or american assets, there will be a response. And sol of the targets are very high targets to iranian culture and iran in all caps will be hit fast and hard, unquote. The Trump Administration is privately warning the members of congress that the retaliation could come within week, and the Administration Officials say that the president ordered the strike on Qasem Soleimani. And some are convinced that the threat was not imminent and others believe it was imminent. Mike pompeo, thank you for joining me this morning. Talk about the new threat from President Trump s. The tweet accurate and is the u. S. Prepared to hit nonmilitary cultural targets in iran which would obviously possibly result in civilian threats and violate a u. N. Resolution that the u. S. Voted for in 2017. Jake, thanks for having me on this morning. President trump has been resolute, and we will continue to be. We will defend america, and the strikes that we took over this past week, including killing the terrorist soleimani and we will continue to take if we need to. If we need to defend the american interest, we will do so. What President Trump said last night is consistent what we have said all along. And the iraqi forces that they could act without impunity and we would not take strikes in iran proper and we have made it clear for four months that is not the case. We would hold responsible the actors and the leaders who took these actions and orchestrated the actions. And the president s tweet made clear that we will do that and the American People should know that we will always defend them and consistent with the International Rule of law and the mern koamerican constitutio we have done it before and we will do it again. And with all due respect, the president s threat on the Iranian Cultural Centers of interest of the iranian culture would not be in accordance with international law, so which is it . Jake, they are not two different things. I have been with President Trump through the entire Strategic Planning process, and related to the entire cam tain, diplomatic, economic and military and we have built out an enormous coalition to push back against the islamic regime, and the way that is consistent with the rule of law. And the president s tweet does not deviate from that in one iota. And so the Cultural Centers are fair targets in your view . Jake, we will do the things that are right and consistent with the american law. I have been part of the discussion and planning process and everything that i have seen about how we will respond with great force and great vigor if the iranian government makes a bad decision, when they do, and i hope they dont, we will respond. And you have hoped that this action is going to dees laescd but the president is threatening to hit them hard, and that not seeming deescalation. Jake, we are trying to restore deterrence that results directly from the fact that Previous Administration left us in a terrible place with the respect of the islamic iran. And obama left with us a terrible state with hamas, and others. And this is the place we found ourselves when we came in, and we have developed a strategy to tell the Iranian Regime to behave like a normal regime, and we have every expectation to achieve the goal. Do you think that President Trump threatening to attack 52 sites in iran and one for each of the american hostages taken by iran in 1979 is deescalating, providing an off ramp for the iranians . We have provided them clear guidance about what it is that we have an an expectation. We have worked with them and had conversations with them and it is important for them to know that we will no longer behave like the obama and biden administration, and we will no longer appease. And people talked about the war and this kicked off when the jaopc was dropped. It said they could establish a crescent into iraq and lebanon and into israel and threatening american lives as well. We have taken a different approach. The approach is successful and more work to do, jake. The Trump Administration is privily warning members of congress that they are expected to retaliate within seven weeks. And so now, the u. S. Has told americans to leave iraq. And they are sending thousands of Additional Service members from the airborne 82nd to kuwait. And now, the deputy has been replaced, and the british navy is accompanying the u. K. Straits in the strait of hormuz, and the u. S. Is bracing for possible iranian cyber attack, and you said that the world is a better safer place, and i can hear you saying it is in the long run, but how about the safer today given the heighten level. My strategy is clear heretia done so. We have done so by working with the partners and making it clear to the islamic regime in iran, that their rogue behavior is no longer tolerated. And the general had it right that we would have been culpably negligent if we had not taken the strides against soleimani. I know that risks to america over the long run is much reduced as a result of the actions that President Trump and the administration has taken in the last three years. Okay. That is in the long run, but i am talking about the short term and let me ask you a question. Do you know for a fact that the mission that soleimani was working on and the attacks that he was planning, have they been called out . We are prepare for anything that the Islamic Republic may do, and clearly actors beyond soleimani and that is why we are doing to work that we are doing, and preparing and flying the forces to the region and building out the coalition and making sure that the partners are defending the embassies and diplomatic facilities and military facilities throughout the region and this is why you saw the statement from dhs and we are prepared in the fact that the republican of islamic iran makes a bad decision. And talk about the strike and the intelligence behind it, and some members of congress and others who have been briefed on the intelligence say they have not seen sufficient evidence to conclude that the attack on the americans was imminent as you have claimed. When do you plan to share evidence with congress and the American People to clear up any questions here . Well, the intelligence has been shared with leaders in congress already, and we will continue to share that. We will go up to capitol hill and brief them yet again this week. I expect that the American People have the evidence right in front of their eyes. We dont have to guess what soleimani was up to. We know what he did december 27th. He killed an american. And we know what he has done for years and years and killed hundreds of americans there. Is no need to guess about what soleimani would have been up to the day after and the day after and the day after. This is a bad guy. We took him from the battlefield and we sthaw that he was plotti plans to take down an american and in other cases Many Americans. And when you are talking about the attacks are imminent, days or week . If you are an american in the region, days or weeks is not relevant. We have to prepare and be ready. We took a bad guy off of the battlefield and we made the right decision and less risks today to the American Forces in the region as a result of it. And i am proud of the effort that President Trump undertook and the execution of the military was phenomenal and the work by the diplomats was very fair and powerful and effective. I keep coming back to the fact that you are saying it is safer, at the same time that the American Government is telling all americans to leave iraq. Again, i understand that in the long run you dont seem to understand that. Oftentimes i have heard you say, jake, america thinks about the moment and does not think about the longterm strategic implications. I dont know i have said it about america, but leaders about this country. Yes, sir. This administration is thinking about exactly that. We are setting the conditions for successful and safe america. Prosperous america at home, and secure america abroad and that is the middle east strategy and what we have done over the last three years in iraq and pushing back against the Islamic Republic of iran and we will not stray from the course, jake. I wanted to ask you, because there does seem to be a disconnect here. And President Trump, according to polling of the American People have not considered him honest or trustworthy and this is the American People, and not me, okay. There is a credibility gap, and in addition this nation has heard leaders whether it is blaming a Youtube Video for the attacks on benghazi or wmb in iraq, and the people have heard the government of the United States say things to them that were not true when it comes to the war. Do you understand that there may be a special responsibility to provide proof and evidence to the American People of the imminence of this attack, and of the need to carry out the mission that you carried out . Jake, i do understand the power that we have and the need that we have to try to share with the American People everything that we possibly can why it is that we are taking the actions that we are taking. We will continue to do that and we will do everything that we can consistent with protecting the sources and the methods and more importantly the capacity to continue to see and understand what is going on and presenting the threats. We dont want to risk the intelligence. I spent a little bit of time as the director of the Central Intelligence agency, and we never want to put that at risk, but as my responsibilities of the secretary of state, we have to continue to take the actions and how we expect it to be delivering to protect and defend america each and everyday, jake. We look forward to learning more about the evidence. Secretary of state mike pompeo, thank you for joining us, sir. Thank you, jake, for having me on today. We are just days away from the iowa caucus, and now, the iranian crisis is putting a focus on the international policy. And joining us now is former mayor Pete Buttigieg who served in afghanistan as a former Naval Intelligence officer and thank you for joining us. After the strike, you called the Qasem Soleimani as a threat to the security of the United States, and are you saying that President Trump deserves some credit for the strike . No, not until we know whether this was a good decision and how this decision was made. And the president has failed to demonstrate that. The secretary of state just now when asked whether this strike prevented directly an attack and he did not prove or demonstrate or even claim that the answer was yes. Now, lets be clear, Qassem Soleimani was a bad figure. He has american blood on his hands, and none of us should shed a tear for his death. But just because he deserved it doesnt mean it was the right strategic move. This is about consequences. This is one of the most volatile places in the world. We need answers on how this decision was reached, whether there was an alternative and whether the president has thought through the consequences in particular for american lives and not just the troops on planes going to the middle east right now, but u. S. Citizens around the world whose lives may be at risk, because of the fallout from this action. Until we get a answnswers on th the move is questionable to say the least. The joint chiefs has said that there is compelling intelligence of a significant campaign of violence that was going to be leveled within the americans of days, weeks or months and if you were commander in chief, and you had a chairman of the joint chiefs who was bringing you information like that, do you think that you would have ordered the strike . I wouldner hesitate to use force if it is necessary to protect american lives and the question is was it necessary and better than the alternative. It is not hard to believe that general soleimani was in the middle of the campaign of violence. He was a Walking Campaign of violence, but when you are dealing with the middle east, you to think about the next and the next and the next move. This is not checkers. I am not sure that any of us really believe that this president and the people around him especially given that he has not even filled some of the Key National Security posts is really going through all of the consequences of what could happen next. En as we speak, it looks like there is a suspension of antiisis activities in iraq and just to deal with the fallout here. We need answers on whether this is part of the meaningful strategy and what choices were offered to the president and whiwhy he believed this is the best choice when we have not seen the indication that it is serving to prevent the attack they are talking about. To be clear, this is not a battlefield maneuver, because senior official being taken out and how did that prevent an attack and the alternatives are not better. We have not seen that. And now, regarding your opponents senator Bernie Sanders and senator Elizabeth Warren, who i will be talking about soon say they believe it is an assassination, and do you believe it is an assassination . I am not interested in the terminology, but the consequences and the precedence. And did the president have the authority do that . It seems that people at maralago had more information that the congress. The real world effects of this are far beyond what we are debating today and we need answers quickly. I wanted the ask you, because you are talking about the judgment in Foreign Policy and especially in contrast with former Vice President joe biden, and take a listen to biden on the trail a couple of days ago when he said that he did not oppose the raid to kill Osama Bin Laden and he was asked by a fox reporter if he would be willing to pull the trigger in an operation like the one that killed soleimani. Would you pull the trigger . We did, and the guys name was Osama Bin Laden. And didnt you ask him he said, didnt you tell obama not to carry out the mission, and he said, no, i didnt, but the source that biden told obama not to pull the trigger was biden himself. Listen to biden in 2012 describing the conversation in the room with president obama. I said that we owe the man a direct answer. Mr. President , my answer is dont go, and we have to do two more things to see if he is there. Given Vice President bidens opposition to the bin ladens raid and given the earlier version, and the iraq war which you called the worst foreignpolicy decision made in your lifetime, do you feel that you have better judgment on Foreign Policy than Vice President biden . Well, i will let the vp speak to his own judgment, but let me tell you about mine. It sin fois informed by being o of those planes headed into a war zone. It is one of the reasons that i know the gravity of the decisions made in the situation room, and when you are in the military from the moment that you raise your right hand to any time that you are sent into theatre, you have a level of trust and expectation that the commanders above you know what they are doing and exercising their best judgment, that they are consulting with those that they need to consult with, and that they are never going to play games with your lives. I still worry about whether this president really understands that this is not a show. This is not a game. Lives are at stake right now. And my experience has shown me just how much is on the line when we ask our troops to go out to carry out the policies. My judgments also informed by belonging to that generation that has lived through conflicts that we were told would be over in days or weeks, and are continuing to this day. Remember, enlist, and you could be old enough to be on one of the planes going to kuwait right now and not alive when 9 11 happened. We are in a season of endless war and i have been shaped by that experience. And so your youth and service is matched by a different democrat running for president , congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and you disagree with her about a number of matters dealing with Foreign Policy and so is that enough . Well, certainly safe to say that the congresswoman and i have very different views and very different judgment. Another thing that i would point to is that i have the support of over 200 very well respected civilian and military former National Security officials, ranging from former Deputy Director of the cia to former National Security adviser to a former secretary of the army. And they are supporting me, because they view me as having the judgment and the capability to make these decisions. They understand National Security. They understand the presidency, and they are the kind of people that i am turning to make sure that my campaign and eventually my presidency is going to be well informed. You and your opponent senator Elizabeth Warren have been disagreeing of whether or not to use big donors to finance the president ial campaigns and i wanted to give you a chance to respond to something that she said earlier in the week. Take a listen. The billionaires and the Corporate Executives and the favorite president ial candidates have one clear goal, to convince you that everything that you imagine is impossible. To convince you that because no one is pure, it is pointless to try to make anything better. So in context of the last few weeks, she is really talking about you there, and indicating that you are a favorite candidate of the billionaires and Corporate Executives that you want to tell the American People that policies they want are impossible, and what is your response . I am not running on what is impossible. I am running on what is possible. A bold policy agenda that would make me the most progressive president that we have had in a half century that we can do it in a way that would actually unify and not polarize more of the American People. The things that i am offering up and the things that we have talked about in the campaign would be gamechangers on everything from access to health care to affordability of college to the ability to just get ahead in the basic principle that one job ought to be enough in the United States of america. I am running for president based on the opportunity to do big and bold things. And anybody who thinks otherwise needs to Pay Attention to what i am proposing to do. And Elizabeth Warren said she would not appoint any high dollar donors as ambassadors and do you make the same commitment . Anybody i appoint to office will be based if they are qualify and readiness to do the job. If i am looking agent a senior envoy to deal with afghanistan and pakistan and somebody emerges as the right person for that job with the best qualifications, are they going to be disqualified because they came to a house party for my Campaign Years earlier, no. No, no, big dollar donors. So the maximum is 2,800 and there are people who are bundlers who raise money for super pacs, and you know how it works. For my candidates appointed to any position will be there on the merits and neither qualified or disqualified based on the idea that they supported and believed in my campaign. One last question for you, sir. You have touted the fact that you have midwestern roots as an example of how you can beat President Trump, and senator klobuchar and others say that you lost the only bid for statewide office in indiana by 25 points and why should the voters buy the argument that you could win michigan when you lost indiana by so much statewide . Well, indiana is a little bit different than michigan. I am big on the idea of midwesterners running for president , and im offering a midwesterner who has executive administration, and building a government and guiding a pop u yoolation based on the military and the other experiences that i am bringing to the table. One thing that the president s and most of the nominees have had in common in the modern times is losing an election or two. I was under no illusion of what i was up against the first time i ran as unknown figure and in 2010 one of the biggest republican elections in history. But i am proud of the race we ran when i was up for state treasury, because the central issue was standing up for auto worker, and it is a long story, but it was to bring back the auto industry, and i knew that running in indiana on Barack ObamasEconomic Policy would not lead to easy win, but i knew it was the right thing to do. So i have learned as much from the races and the moments of life that did not go my way from the ones that did. They make me a better candidate and would make me a better president. Thank you, former mayor Pete Buttigieg. Thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you. And now, joining us is another candidate who will be joining mayor buttigieg on the debate stage. And now joining us from dubuque, iowa, we have massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren and thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. Thank you for having me this morning. It is good to be here. You called the u. S. Attack that killed Qasem Soleimani an assassination. And the president voted to make illegal assassinations illegal and are you saying that this is a violation of law . Look, it was a targeted attack on a government official, and a highranking military official for the government of iran. What it has done has moved the country closer to war. We are not safer today than we were before donald trump acted. I think that the question that we ought to focus on is why now . Why not a month ago and why not a month from now. And the answer from the administration seems to be that they cant keep their story straight on this. They pointed in all different directions. And you know, the last time that we watched them do this was the summer over ukraine. As soon as people started asking about the conversations between donald trump and the president of ukraine and why aid had been held up to ukraine, the administration did the same thing. They pointed in all directions of what was going on. And of course, what emerged then is that this is donald trump just trying to advance Donald Trumps own political agenda. Not the agenda of the United States of america. So what happens right now . Next week, the president of the United States could be facing an impeachment trial in the senate. We know that he is deeply upset about that. I think that people are reasonably asking, why this moment . Why does he pick now to take this highly inflammatory, highly dangerous action that moves us closer to war . We have been at war for 20 years in the middle east, and we need to stop the war this the middle east and not expand it. And senator, are you suggesting that President Trump pulled the trigger and had Qasem Soleimani killed as a distraction from impeachment . Look, i think that people are reasonably asking about the timing and why it is that the administration seems to have all kinds of different answers. In the first 48 hours after this attack, what did we hear . Well, we heard it was for an imminent attack, and then we heard, no, no, it is to prevent any future attack, and then we heard that it is from the Vice President himself and no, it is related to 9 11, and then we heard from president reports of people in the Intelligence Community saying that the whole, that the threat was overblown. You know, when the administration doesnt seem to have a coherent answer for taking a step like this, and they have taken a step that moves us closer to war, a step that puts everyone at risk, and step that puts the military at risk and puts the diplomats in the region at risk. And we have already paid a huge price for this war. Thousands of american lives lost, and a cost that we have paid domestically and around the world. At the same time, look at what it has done in the middle east. Millions of people who have been killed, who have been injured, who have been displaced, and so this is not a moment when the president should be escalating tensions and moving us to war. The job of the president is to keep us safe and that means move back from the edge. And one of the explanations that we have heard is that on december 27th, the iranianbacked militias ordered a strike that killed an American Contractor, and you said yesterday that you would have not ordered the strike against sul maun soleimani and you described him as a military leader, and we should point out that the guard corps that he was in charge of and the quds force as a terrorist group declared in 2007 and the state department did the same for both groups last year, and as president would you not prioritize the u. S. Military killing the leaders of organizations designated terrorist organizations . Look, the job of the president is to keep us safe. And we know that in this circumstance that donald trump was presented with a range of options by way of response, but the point is not to try to move us closer to war. The point is to move us away from that. And at this point, and in large part started back when donald trump took us out of the Iranian Nuclear deal. Remember, we had worked with our allies and shown that diplomacy works. We got iran to the negotiating table, and iran had ceased work on its nuclear program. That helps to make the region safer, and now, iran is not a good actor, and no doubt about it. They are a bad actor, and there is more that we needed to do with iran, but iran was in compliance with the nuclear deal. Our allies said stay in the deal, but donald trump all by himself said, nope, we are getting out of it and tearing it up. And it has been a series of more and more provocative acts. And each time that happens, it moves America Closer to war in the middle east. We dont need more war in the middle east. We need peace in the middle east. And take a listen to Vice President joe biden last night on the campaign trail. We need to have a provide a steady stable, experienced leadership. With all due respect, i think that i am best prepared for anybody running for president. And a recent cnn poll shows that the democratic voters agree that biden is head and shoulders above the rest of the democratic field who the primary voters believe can best handle the Foreign Policy, and how can you counter the argument that the former Vice President is making and seems to be winning . Look, i get out every day and i talk to voters all across iowa and all across this country, and every piece of this is about judgment. It is about where we have been in the past and what experiences are, and how we are going forward. We have been at war for 20 years in the middle east. I understand that there are people who are running for president who are willing to keep the combat troops in the middle east indefinitely, five years, ten year, and Lindsey Graham talked about 100 years. That is not in the interest of the United States of america and certainly not in the interest of the middle east and not in the interests of the world. We need to dial back from that. We face other risks in the world with china, with russia, and we are under increasing economic pressure. The threat from climate change, and we need to work with our allies, and there is much that we need to do internationally. Staying pinned down and escalating our wars in the middle east is not in the long term interests of the United States. I will continue to talk about that with voters all across the country. And senator, i just wanted to try to drill down a little bit on something that you said earlier in the interview when you talked about the fact that people are asking the question why President Trump carried out the operation when impeachment is about to recommence in the senate. I know that you are saying that people are raising the issue, and the administration has given a number of reasons for the strike against soleimani, but what do you think . Do you believe that President Trump pulled the trig ore on this pulled the trigger on this operation as a way to distract from impeachment . Is that what you think . I think it is a reasonable question to ask particularly when the administration immediately after having taken this decision offers a bunch of contradictory explanations for what is going on. What do you think . I think it is right question to ask. We will get more information as we go forward, but look at the timing on this, and look at what donald trump has said afterwards and his administration. They have pointed in multiple directions. There is a reason that he chose this moment, not a month ago and not a month from now, not a less aggressive and less dangerous response. He had a whole range of responses that were presented to him. He didnt pick one of the other ones, he picked the most aggressive and the one that moves us closer to war. So what does everybody talk about today . Are we going to war . Are we going to have another five year, ts, ten years of war the middle east and dragged in once again. Are we bringing another generation of young people into war . That is every bit of the conversation right now. Donald trump has taken an extraordinarily reckless step, and we have seen it before, he is using the Foreign Policy and uses whatever he can to advance the interests of donald trump. I would again say that the Trump Administration does say that American Contractor was killed on december 27th, and obviously the attacks on the u. S. Embassy in baghdad and they are pointing to that context as the reason for the strike. Lets turn to impeachment, because you do want to talk about it apparently, and you have heard enough evidence to convict President Trump in the senate trial. And listen to number two democrat, senator dick durbin, your whip, a couple of weeks on the show. It is a mistake for the senators on both sides of the aisle frankly to say how they will vote before the trial starts . I think it is. I think they have gone too far, and how can they hold up their hands to say i swear impartial judgment, because you cant do that and they shouldnt have done that. That is the democratic leader of the senate saying that you and others should not have said that you would vote to convict him, and is he wrong . I have enormous respect for senator durbin. But understand this. What i said is enough evidence has been presented and so far donald trump has offered absolutely no defense. It is not like they have come forward and said, oh, wait, we want to present some other evidence and the other evidence is going to show something different, and they have done nothing, and in fact, they have done worse than nothing and what they have said is that you cant hear from the witnesses who have firsthand information and you cant get the documents that you need to see to have more evidence about what is happening. They are defying a court order and remember about separation of powers . They are under an order to release the documents and refusing to do so. And the way i look at it, i will see the evidence in front of us and i will see the fact that they are not putting forward any defense and i see that they are trying to block any access to additional firsthand information. And boy, that tells me that this is someone who has violated the law. This is someone who needs to be held accountable. No one is above the law, not even the president of the United States, and that is what impeachment is about. I wanted to turn to medicare for all and a major issue on the campaign trail. You and Bernie Sanders support health care for all and though you have a different plan. You have a phasein program to pass a second law halfway through the term. And take a listen to what Bernie Sanders had to say when he was asked about it. I think that it is not going to be an easy fight, but i think that we will succeed. So we are going to do it right away. That is the difference that we have with senator warner. Senator sanders also said that your transition period for medicare to all is quite different from his own, and why do you think that your transition plan is better than his . So, look, i wanted to get the maximum amount of health to the maximum number of people as quickly as possible, and the reason is that people are suffering. 36 million Americans Last year did not have a prescription filled that the doctor had written, because they couldnt afford it. That shouldnt happen in this nation. So, my plan is first, do what i can as president on day one. I will defend the Affordable Care act and go against the sabotage that the Trump Administration has been undergoing. And secondly, i will bring down the cost of prescription drugs, and use the powers granted by law to the president to come in and reduce the cost of insulin and epipens and hiv aids drugs and drugs that we can bring down costs for hundreds of millions of dollars for families all across the country. Then in the first 100 days, i will do what we can do by a vote of 50. And that is, because i have figured out how the pay for medicare for all by not increasing taxes one thin dime on the middleclass families and we have enough money to offer a generous opportunity for people to get full Health Care Coverage. 135 Million People can get full Health Care Coverage, medicare for all, all of the way through at no cost. And we can have coverage for others at a very subsidized price. So it is only a modest cost. Lets let americans experience what this is about. What it is like to have you and your health care between you and your doctor or your Mental Health professional or the Nurse Practitioner or the physical therapist without having an Insurance Company standing in the middle saying no, no, no. I get all of that, but and then we will be in a position to vote for medicare for all. And why is your transition better sorry . You want your transition period to be better because it is more quickly . It is going to get most help to most people the quickest. Help starts on day one and then full Health Care Coverage for 135 Million People to optin at absolutely no cost. And so you think that his is unrealistic . And we can do it on the 50vote budget reconciliation, and get help to people. Let people experience it. I want a lot of allies in the fight to make Health Care Available to every single american. I am committed to health care for all americans. Health care is a basic human right and i wanted to do it in a way that gets as Many Americans as much help as quickly as we can, and build our alliances, and then we can move to medicare for all, and this is the vote we will take. By the end of the first term, yes or no, would your plan ban most private Health Insurance by the end of the first term . It would transition everyone to medicare for all. We will provide Health Care Coverage to everyone. No cost increase to middleclass family and think of what that is going to mean. The average family spent out of pocket about 12,000 on Health Insurance, premiums, and copays and deductibles and uncovered expenses. They dont have to do that. It is like a 12,000 tax cut for millions of people across the country. That is money that they can spend in their local economy and money that people can use to save up to buy a home. That means people are free to leave the employer they are with and start their own Small Business and go to work for a Small Business, and this is real change that will affect families where they live and within our reach. So that is a yes, that the private Health Insurance will be banned by the end of the first term. Go ahead. Its its that we will transition to medicare for all for everyone. Right. That is the vote that well have. And i will be out there fighting for it, because i think it is the right thing to do, but understand this, i am going to get help to people on the first day. We need to start making changes, and we need to have the courage to do that from day one. And lets talk about that. And this is what i am going to do. And lets talk about that, because if you are going to do this from day one, you need the democrats to take back the senate in 2020 and if that happen, and it is and if, it is because of the more moderate democrats in the purple states, such as colorado or maine or arizona and the three leading candidates in those races have publicly said that they do not support medicare for all, and so how would you get it through the senate when the democrats would oppose it . So, remember, jake, on day one does not take a change in the law. We can do the defense of the Health Care Affordable act without any changes in the law and i can reduce the cost of prescription drugs without any changes of the law, but on the budget reconciliation and on 50 votes, i have a way to be able to pay for Health Care Coverage for people all across this country by not increasing taxes on middleclass families. To offer as an option to 135 Million People the opportunity to have full Health Care Coverage but this is buying into the public option, right . This is a public option that you are offering . Well, it is not buyingin. It is 135 Million People who would have the option to have 100 Health Care Coverage at no cost. And then offering the rest of america at a modest cost to be able to get 100 coverage. Thats an opportunity for people all across the country that dont have to do it, but it is going to give them a chance, and it is going to give them a chance to experience what health care is like, and if you dont have an Insurance Company standing in between saying im sorry, we dont kor that doctor or that prescription, and that is out of network. It is to give people the experience of full Health Care Coverage, and we can pay for it by asking the top 1 to pay more and Companies Like amazon who made 10 billion in reported profits and paid nothing in taxes, and my personal favorites is cracking down on the tax cheats at the top. We make those changes, and we will have enough money to provide health care for everyone in this country. Lets let people experience that, and then we can vote on the transition for everyone. And you will have some salesmanship to do if you are president and the democrats retake the majority, because as of right now, they are not willing to support that. And right now we are releasing new numbers but, but. Go ahead. I wanted to say one thing, jake. This is helping the American People, and the bottom line is that i believe in democracy. You know, i was in the senate back after donald trump was elected and the republicans had the house, had the senate and had the white house. They had the votes to be able to repeal the Affordable Health care act in the first week. And yet, ultimately, even though the house voted to repeal, we held on in the senate, and the reason was because people across the nation said that Health Care Matters to me. I want more health care. People marched and people who were never political took to the streets to say this matters. That is democracy in action and that is the kind of change that we are ready to make as americans, and we are ready to hold the government accountable and say enough of the drug companies, and enough of the insurance companies. Make this Health Care System work for me and for my family. That is what is within our reach. Welcome back to state of the union. Im jake tapper. Both chambers of congress will be back in town this week, and there is no progress on the houses stalled impeachment, and there is new fallout on the strike of irans top general. And joining me is the chairman of House Congressional Committee adam schiff. You said that you were a member of the gang of eight and you would be briefed on such a thing, and you have yet to get an adequate answer as to why the strike is necessary right now. And you have heard senator warren suggest that it is a wag the dog type thing, and so that is a striking suggestion from the senator, and is she right . Well, i dont know what the president president s decision was, but when secretary pompeo says that this decision to take out soleimani is to save american lives and other lives, that is a opinion, and not a congressional opinion. And much like reneging on the deal led to security, the evidence was to the contrary and i believe it is going to be the same here sadly. I believe it is going into crease the risk around the world and i have not seen the intelligence that taking out and we are already seeing serious strategic repercussions. The Iraqi Parliament is introducing new resolution to remove us. Thats going to increase our fight for isis. Thats a real coup for iran to force the United States out of iraq. We have to take our eyes off the ball when it comes to fighting isis in syria. We are not going to be able to protect a small number of forces there. We have to either send more forces or withdraw the forces we have. We have already seen setbacks and i dont know well see any improvement of security, i think quite the contrary well see increase risk of the war of iran. You acknowledged in the tru administration that soleimani attacking the american region. Is that accurate . The question is did the plotting here rise to the level that requires his elimination from the battlefield. Would that elimination stop the plotting or would it accelerated or would it make the attacks great or not worse . I dont think the intelligence supports the conclusion of removing soleimani increasing our security. When you have someone like soleimani who has been at this for so long. The question is why now . Is this going to increase or decrease the risk of war . I think it is going to increase the risk of war with iran. So some officials told the New York Times of the evidence that this attack was imminent was quote, razor thin. Do you agree . I dont know if i would use that characterization, there was a lack of details in terms of the plotting and i dont think we have sufficient guidance on either it is imminent or nature of the attacks taking out soleimani. I dont think the intelligence supports the conclusion that killing a top iranian official is going to either stop plotting or improve americas security. I do think it is likely resulting in strategic losses and i think it is going to result in potentially our big thrown out of iraq, reducing our amateur ability to fight isis. Lets turn to impeachment. Nancy pelosi is Still Holding on the articles of impeachment. Mitch mcconnell made it clear on friday that hes in no rush for a trial. Hes not going to need her demands. How long is Democratic Leaders preparing to hold onto the articles . Could this be indefinite . The desire is to get a commitment from the senate that theyre going to have a fair trial. Mcconnell, showing that hes working it hoops for the president and made himself an active participant in the president s cover up. You are never going to get what you want then . Is that what you are saying . You are seeing the effect of this is flushing out senators where democrats and republicans having to go to the record saying do we want to see witnesses or see the documents . Do we want a real trial or do we want a cover up . It is clear with the president and Mitch Mcconnell anymore, they dont want a trial or witnesses, they dont want a verdict. They want a dismissal. They want to have the house measures come in. But, thats not what the American People want. It is not what the founders contemplated. If you ask majority around the country, they want the evidence to come out. I think that withholding the articles thus far flush out where Mitch Mcconnell sounded from. It is my hope that pressure will go in a real trial and fair the American People and as well as the president. If you are succeeding doing that flushing out mcconnell or do collins and murcowski are, do thank you think thatll happen this week . I dont know the answer to that. At the end of the day, what we all should be pushing for. I agree with senator durbin, what we should want is a fair trial and what we should want from senators is that they take their oath seriously and that oath requires them to be impartial. I heard some of the senators like the senate proceed to an appeal, it is not an appeal. It is a trial. Having involved witness testimony but we ought to start out by having the documents come out and the documents that had been coming out lately are increasingly in criminating of the president. You can see either ones want to cover it up. The top house attorney told the federal court on friday, there may be a third articles o impeachme impea impeachment for obstruction of justice during the mueller investigation. Are you impeaching President Trump again . We are focusing on the trial coming up. What the House Council is saying we have been getting people like don mcgahn as part of the impeachment inquiry and for those senators who say why did the house wait until the ukraine offer . On those articles, the president was trying to speak at Foreign Health for the election. It is not sufficient to say lets wait another year or two years to get those witnesses in if the president tries to cheat the election. We move with mcgahn or those that are not as urgent and that makes all the sense in the world. Adam schiff, thank you so much for being here. U. S.
