We begin today with breaking news on the world lead. France still under its highest alert level monday. Now news that last weeks terror may, may have only been the beginning. According to the associated press, two French Police officials telling the a. P. That as many as six more terrorist cell members are on the loose. This after, over the weekend, when french authorities told cnn that a terror cell in france had been activated. Today as citizens here in paris are trying to get back to normal or at least the new normal going back to school and work there are painful reminders of fridays sieges. Families burying their loved ones jewish victims killed by Amedy Coulibaly. Investigators are looking into a video of coulibaly pledging his allegiance to al baghdadi the leader of isis. Today u. S. Intelligence saying they are reviewing the video but have no reason to doubt its authenticity. Administration officials also admit coulibaly had been in the terrorist data base for awhile. Thats a quote. But as police and analysts piece together how and why coulibaly killed five people its becoming clearer and clearer that his girlfriend may have spurred his conversion from smallbit criminal to deadly jihadi. Cnn has learned new details about the lethal romance of the terrorist couple at the center of the conspiracy whose savagery has stunned the world. It turns out Hayat Boumeddiene, believed to be on the run in syria, was the more radical of the two, according to the attorney for her boyfriend. Amedy coulibaly was killed at the kosher supermarket in paris after slaughtering four innocent jewish men. It was here where coulibaly began his evil rampage, murdering in cold blood a local rookie policewoman. Perhaps not coincidentally just around the corner just steps away from a local Jewish School. Today, that school was guarded by armed police. More than 18,000 French Police and military troops have fanned out across the country to protect vulnerable targets, including hundreds of synagogues and Jewish Schools. Its a crazy situation. The president of the school tells us he believes coulibaly intended to attack the school before he murdered the police officer. She was killed you know in the corner, you know. 200 meters, you know from the school. Do you think that the school was the target . Yes. Do you know that or yes. You think it . I think. We didnt talk for long. He had to run off to attend a funeral for one of the jewish hostages killed by coulibaly here at the Kosher Grocery store. We are being kept away from the crime scene by Police Barricades policemen and police tape but even from this distance you can see just how devastating the French Special forces assault on the terrorist was here at the supermarket, the kosher supermarket hypercacher. The walls and windows are riddled with bullets, one completely taken out. A photograph published for the first time today shows the horror that took place inside. This group of hostages including a mother and her infant daughter hiding for hours from the terrorists inside a freezer. They were worried that the child would not survive the hours in this freezer but somehow, they managed to communicate that to police who turned off the electricity, possibly in that action saving the babys life. Visitors here today prayed and lit candles for the dead. This mother jewish like the four victims here told us that france has changed. As a jew in france do you feel bad. Tell me. I feel very bad, because we have children we have to put our children in Jewish School because of our religion but now we are afraid. Now we have more reporting on coulibaly, having spoken to his former defense attorney earlier today. He was labeled by his own mother as a juvenile delinquent. Coulibaly was something of a run of the mill criminal convicted of Armed Robbery five times and drug charges once nothing related to terrorism. But then while in prison coulibaly met this man, djamel bag baghel an algerian terrorist. Beghal was serving ten years for plotting to blow up the u. S. Embassy in paris. According to the attorney beghal introduced coulibaly to Cherif Kouachi from the other terrorist group. Eight months ago, coulibaly was released from prison and went back into the arms of his even more radical girlfriend according to the lawyer. Coulibaly suggested that the arrests of the extremists im sorry. Coulibalys lawyer suggested that the arrest of extremists in december may have sped up the timeline for attacks. Now, in the chaos today, authorities initially thought that Hayat Boumeddiene may have escaped that paris supermarket scene, slipping through the masses with frightened hostages was the theory. Now that doesnt seem to be the case. There seems to be mounting evidence that boumeddiene was not even in the country. Cnn chief National Security correspondent jim sciutto is a few blocks away. Jim, authorities obviously want to detain this woman, to get intelligence from her. There is new video showing where she might be headed and it could seemingly shut down the possibility of apprehending her at all, right . Reporter well, no question. The lingering question since these attacks began on wednesday here at the Charlie Hebdo offices was were there other accomplices involved that got away or other members of a terrorist cell that helped them and are still at large. We got that answer today. The french Prime Minister confirming its highly likely there were accomplices. They are still searching for them. Meanwhile, one accomplice that we know to be tied to the attack at the kosher market escaped the country. We have video proof of that today. One of the paris suspects caught on camera on the run. This is Surveillance Footage showing Hayat Boumeddiene, wife of the kosher shop attacker Amedy Coulibaly, entering turkey from madrid five days before the attacks, accompanied by an unknown man, she hands her passport to an immigration officer and continues on her way. From telephone logs turkish Authorities Say she stayed in a hotel, then crossed into syria january 8th. One day before the siege. Today, french authorities made clear she is not the only suspected accomplice still at large. The complicity and networks and maybe finance also. I dont really believe in the idea of the lone wolf. It seems very likely even if you are talking about getting syria to help bring her back. The United States does not have the greatest relationship with syria. No but theres a way for syria to try to make a gesture and say look we are fighting the same enemy and we are not the enemy you think, the enemy which is real is not us. Maybe in russia they say by the way, try to give the accomplice so there are various ways. Theres an apparent accomplice on that videotape with her. Lets talk about accomplices, because the French Police are now saying at least according to the associated press, that there might be six other terror cells, six other terrorists out there. French police told cnn over the weekend terror cells had been activated. The Prime Minister just told Christiane Amanpour that he does not think this was a lone wolf attack with just these four individuals. What are you hearing from your sources in terms of how complex this plot might have been how many other people may still be on the loose . In fact French Police is looking on the old cell the one this is ten years ago. This is a cell from a special neighborhood the kouachi brothers were in. This is where everything began. So they are looking on everybody else that was in this at this time maybe 20 21 members. When you say looking at them what does that mean . Looking at them arresting them trying to find them . They are looking at the address, looking at any connections they may have during the last few months with cell phones meetings connections, emails, whatever they may find they are looking at their files and try to make them speak. Defense officials shut down the twitter account and Youtube Channel for u. S. Central command after strange messages began appearing online and the accounts profile was changed. Cnns Barbara Starr joins me live from the pentagon with all the latest. Reporter the claim is by those who are affiliated with isis that they conducted the hacking attack but that may be far from certain. Isis is already here. We are in your pcs, in each military base the hijacked Central Command account reads. In the name of allah, the most gracious the most merciful the cybercaliphate continues its cyberjihad the posts continue. But is this group the cybercaliphate really isis . It could have been anybody. It doesnt really matter that much that it was isis. It does matter that a Group Calling itself isis is taking credit for it. The goal here is to cause fear and overreaction. We need to react appropriately to it but not overreact to it. The fact that the twitter feed from centcom was hacked is not that significant. The pentagon says so far, it does not appear anything classified was posted and one u. S. Military official said some of the information has already appeared online elsewhere. I can tell you this is something we are obviously looking into and something that we take seriously. However, just a note of caution to folks as theyre covering this story, this is a pretty significant difference between what is a large data breach and the hacking of a twitter account. Reporter the fbi is assisting the military with the investigation of the hacking of both its twitter and youtube accounts. Its the latest in a string of online hacks by people claiming to be isis. Last week several local media organizations had their accounts hacked and similar threats were posted. And all of this comes as isis in the wake of the paris attacks is also finding itself targeted online. The Hacker Group Anonymous says its targeting isis. Whats more concerning is not what they stole and posted its what they might have stolen and might be able to steal in the future. But this was a shot across the bow, basically saying we can steal things from you, take a look. As the hackers were posting the threats, the white house was sending out a message from the president on its own twitter account. If were going to be connected, then we need to be protected. British Prime Minister david cameron, german chancellor Angela Merkel as well as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and president mahmoud abbas, all of them here. Noticeably absent were president obama or Vice President joe biden or secretary of state john kerry or secretary of defense chuck hagel and on and on. In fact the highest ranking u. S. Official in france was attorney general eric holder. Pretty good but he was here for a terrorism summit that had already been scheduled and he did not attend the march. The u. S. Ambassador was the only u. S. Official. Now, the white house spent much of todays press briefing answering questions about criticism that there should have been a higher ranking, higher profile u. S. Official and cnns senior White House Correspondent jim acosta joins us live from the white house to talk about this. Jim, what did the white house have to say . Reporter well jake something amazing happened over here at the white house today. The white house admitted it made a mistake in not sending a higher level official than the u. S. Ambassador to france to that rally in paris yesterday. But White House Press secretary josh earnest would not say how that mistake was made or who made that mistake. As you mentioned, there were ample officials who could have gone. Secretary of state john kerry was in india. The attorney general, eric holder was in paris for meetings with french officials. He did a round of sunday talk show appearances but did not attend the rally. Then you have to add that to the fact that the president and Vice President were at their respective homes. The president was in washington here at the white house, the Vice President i should mention was at his home up in wilmington delaware. But heres how White House Press secretary josh earnest acknowledged the error on the part of the white house at todays white house briefing. Heres what he had to say. Some have asked whether or not the United States should have sent someone with a higher profile than the ambassador to france and i think its fair to say that we should have sent someone with a higher profile to be there. That said there is no doubt that the American People and this administration stand foursquare behind our allies in france. Reporter josh earnest went on to say that the security factors in planning a president ial trip within 36 hours notice to paris would have been a daunting challenge in that that was part of the reason for the white house decision but i just talked to a secret Service Official within the last several minutes who said that the agency was never contacted or asked about a president ial trip last week so if the white house was thinking through the security options of sending the president to paris, they did not contact the secret service according to the secret service and according to a secret Service Spokesman who would speak on the record brian leery, he said it would have been challenging given what they know about that rally but he did not say it would have been impossible. So theoretically, a trip could have been made. We should also point out the white house said earlier today this was not a decision made by the president. This was made by other staffers. S. Officials is making headlines. But is the presence of leaders and dignitaries from other nations, their actual being here has come as a surprise to some groups that consider the fight for free speech a fulltime job. It must be an even bigger surprise to the journalists and activists who are behind bars in their countries for saying something that the regimes didnt like. The Nonprofit Group Reporters Without Borders put out a Statement Today saying it was outraged by the presence of officials from country that restrict freedom of information. They were at the rally anyway. Reporters without borders called out nations like egypt, ranked 158th out of 179 nations on the press freedom index. They sentenced three aljazeera journalists for ten seven to ten years on what many believe to be trumpedup terrorist charges for supporting the muslim brotherhood. Its been more than a year since their arrest and they have just been granted a retrial. Turkeys Prime Minister there at the rally. They rank 154th on the index and according to the committee to protect journalists, turkey won backtoback titles for jailing the most journalists in 2012 and 2013. Then of course the ambassador from saudi arabia proud participant in that rally. Saudi arabia which condemned the slaughter at Charlie Hebdo just a few days after it had flogged a blogger for the same crime, blasphemy. Then theres Vladimir Putins russia which sent their foreign minister lavrov to that rally. Very exciting to see him. They also sent several journalists on to long assignments in siberia. They sentenced a blogger who launched a website exposing the corruption in the sochi Winter Olympics and sent the band pussy riot to prison for performing a negative song about vladimir putin. In other National News all three dead terrorists were known not only by french intelligence officials but they were on the u. S. Terror watch list. They had been on it for quite awhile. We are now learning that the man who took hostages and killed four of them at a kosher supermarket was on a u. S. Terrorist watch list and investigators are trying to find out whether the terrorist linked to the paris attack have crossed paths with any american citizens. Cnn justice correspondent pamela brown has that part of the story for us tonight. Reporter well in the wake of the paris attacks and new efforts by isis to capitalize on the momentum the department of Homeland Security has tightened security at federal buildings in more u. S. Cities and Law Enforcement is being asked to stay on heightened alert. The big concern among Law Enforcement here is that there were americans training alongside the suspects in yemen and that there could be others like the kouachi brothers and coulibaly living here. With an isis flag behind him and a rifle at his side the alleged killer in the kosher market siege seen here in video that emerged over the weekend pledges allegiance to isis. A senior u. S. Law enforcement official tells cnn Amedy Coulibaly was in the u. S. Governments terrorist data base for awhile though its not certain if he was on the nofly list. The coulibaly video surfaced just as isis tweeted out a video encouraging jihadis go out and attack government officials and civilians in canada the u. S. , australia and france. Law enforcement Officials Say the terrorist group is trying to galvanize supporters in the wake of the paris attacks. This is the nature of the new threat that we must confront. Reporter in response the fbi and dhs sent out a warning urging Law Enforcement officials across the country to stay on a heightened state of alert and the nypd sent out a citywide warning. What you see with this renewed threat is a call for a wider audience through their twitter capabilities through their internet reach, through their videos to say we want more people to engage in low tech low cost high yield attacks with whatever they can put together. Reporter Law Enforcement Officials Say its not yet clear if the paris suspects were directed or just influenced by isis or al qaeda to carry out these low tech, low cost attacks. Whether or not there could be similar type attacks in the u. S. U. S. Senator Dianne Feinstein raised alarm bells when she said this on cnn sunday. I think there are sleeper cells not only in france but certainly in other countries and yes, even in our own. Reporter a senior u. S. Law enforcement source i spoke with said theres no evidence of sleeper cells in the u. S. But said its possible there are other people they are just not aware of who are plotting attacks and that is of course the big concern, jake. What officials dont know. Is former state Department Coordinator for counter terrorism, Ambassador Daniel Benjamin chief advisor to Hillary Clinton while at the state department. Yesterday on cnns state of the Union Senator feinstein, member of the Senate Intelligence committee, said the visa waiver program, the program that allows citizens from some countries to enter the u. S. For up to 90 days without a visa, she called that the achilles heel of america. Do you agree and what more do you think needs to be done to prevent an attack on the homeland . Jake, its good to be with you. I dont agree. In fact the visa waiver system is complemented by an extensive array of information sharing agreements that we have with our European Partners who are the principal participants in visa waiver and other countries that tell us an enormous amount about who is getting on every plane coming to the United States. Because of that our Intelligence Community is able to check every possible data base and look into any derogatory information about travelers here. We are much much safer than we were 10 or 15 years ago in that regard and while we cant predict perfect success in this regard, we are much better off and i think its a pretty good system. We have seen these attacks on western countries in the last few months the attack in ottawa the attack in australia, now these horrific attacks in paris. What do you think the likelihood is that we will start to see this as the new normal in western countries, including the United States . Well in some sense, we have already seen it because since the late yemeni clerk al awlaki put out his call for individual acts of jihad by people wherever they may be we have seen a number of such acts and one of them was carried out by nidal hassan at fort hood. These belong in that same cat category category. It could happen here but that being said we have really dedicated domestic Law Enforcement and intelligence personnel working these issues around the clock. It could happen you cant prevent every attack but i think we are much more aware of the threat than anyone on earth and really doing our best to prevent it from happening again. Just a few months ago, president obama touted the antiterrorist operations in yemen as a clear success. Its still vague, still murky how connected the kouachi brothers were to al qaeda in yemen, aqap but what does this attack say and the fact that Anwar Al Awlaki still wields clout when it comes to jihadis and homegrown terrorists even though he was killed in 2011. What do all these attacks say about how successful the u. S. Has been in antiterror operations in yemen . Well, we have been pretty successful. We have thwarted quite a number of attacks from the Christmas Day socalled underwear bomber on. But its important to remember that yemen is a very difficult case. Its much of its territory is ungoverned. We have been working with that government in sanaa trying to increase our ability to strike at terrorists but this was a problem that was growing for more than a decade and some people did get to yemen, they did get training and they did go home and they still have that knowledge and that wherewithal to attack. So again, i think we are making progress but we really need to keep track of all those people who have been in yemen and who may have been radicalized and gone home. None of these Capacity Building cases, none of these cases where we are working with other countries are easy, clean or foolproof. Ambassador thank you so much. Really appreciate it. In one case explosives were strapped to a young girl and then detonated in a crowded marketplace. In another incident hundreds of bodies left scattered in the town of baga. That area too dangerous right now to recover the bodies for a proper burial. Authorities believe that the Islamic Terrorist Group boko haram is responsible for it all. Reporter well jake eyewitnesses describe hundreds of boko haram arriving in the Early Morning hours opening up with machine gunfire, heavy rocketpropelled grenade fire. The army they say was on the run. Thats the crux of it, if you will. The only army outpost overrun. They were forced out. This witness hid out in the bushes by his house for three days before boko haram moved on and he was able to escape. He thinks that as he left he saw as many as 3,000 bodies. The army however, are saying that they believe there were only about 150 people killed. They say they have had covert surveillance aerial reconnaissance and this is the basis for their figure of 150 dead they say including soldiers as well. But they are not offering up these aerial photographs to kind of back up what theyre saying here. So it runs in the face of the witnesses, what witnesses are saying and we have also talked to soldiers here who have been involved have been sent in to recover some of their colleagues who were killed in the fighting. One soldier talks about prying out of a burntout vehicle, prying out the charred bodies of colleagues and being so traumatized by it not being able to eat for days. Thats some of the firsthand accounting from the soldiers we are getting here. As for the young girls with bombs strapped to them not just in one market but on saturday but two girls boko haram apparently strapped bombs to and sent them into another market nearby on sunday. It seems as though there is the potential for moderate muslims and christians and jews to stand together and really fight this scourge, this islamic jihadism. It is the same sort of reaction as you had in america after september 11th pride, solidarity brotherhood, and not accepting the victory of the terrorists. They ask us to lie down, we stand up. They want to divide us we unite. They want to set muslims against jews muslims come in the street with christian and with jews. And you have another board, not in our name.
