Murder in court and facing the death penalty. Today new details about his Mental Health history and how authorities once took his gun and then gave it back. Plus, ready to launch . Kim jong un making a birthday threat to fire a missile at the u. S. , and the pentagon is saying it is ready. Good afternoon, everyone, welcome to the lead. Im a jake tapper. Well begin today with politics. In 11 days donald trump will be taken the oath of office right over there on capitol hill. But in many ways his presidency really gets rolling this week with confirmation hearings for some of his top cabinet picks beginning tomorrow morning, including senator Jeff Sessions for attorney general, retired general john kelly for Homeland Security and the president elects first News Conference comes smack in the middle of it all on wednesday morning. Se going to be competing with the hearings of his own nominees. All of this as mr. Trump continues to dance around a direct acknowledgement and specific condemnation of the singular role played by russia and Vladimir Putin according to u. S. Intelligence officials in hacking and attempting to interfere in the u. S. Election to damage Hillary Clinton and undermine faith in our democracy. Now, this being a day that ends in y, there was another twitter dustup this morning. This one a response from the president elect to Actress Meryl Streep who used her Golden GlobesLifetime Achievement awards speech to pointedly critique the president elect as a bully. Well have more on that new front in the culture wars later in the show. First lets go live to trump tower and cnn senior White House Correspondent jim acosta. The president elect came out today, jim, and apparently did not answer a fairly direct question about russian hacking. Reporter thats right, jake. Donald trump avoided answering questions on a slew of important topics, from russian to his potential for conflicts of interest at the white house. The president elect is promising to provide those answers at that News Conference you mentioned on wednesday. With Inauguration Day closing in, donald trump is trying to change the conversation away from the cloud of questions hanging over his looming presidency. Well a talk about that on wednesday. Reporter asked by reporters about russias attempts to meddle in the election, he punted to his News Conference wednesday. A key question for trump is how much he buys into the u. S. Intelligence communitys report that concludes russia directed hackers to tilt the election his way. Top transition advisers are not offering much clarity, indicating trump believes some of the findings. He is not denying that entities in russia were behind this particular hacking campaign. Reporter but suggesting it doesnt really matter. Theres no smoking gun when it comes to the nexus between these hacking activities and the election results. Reporter over the weekend trump tweeted, having a Good Relationship with russian is a good thing, not a bad thing. Only stupid people or fools would think that is bad. Part of a softer tone on moscow that worries republicans. If after having been briefed by Intelligence Leaders donald trump is still unsure as to what the russians did, that would be incredibly unnerving to me because the evidence is overwhelming. Reporter trump creating more questions with transition sources confirming to cnn that his soninlaw Jared Kushner will have a job in the white house. Hell hand his business off to his sons while others like kushner will be working in the white house. All i can say is its very simple, very easy. Reporter adding to the preinaugural drama, hearings for the cabinet picks getting under way. Democrats howling over delays in Background Materials coming in to the committees. This is a parade of people who are not your normal nominees and we need that information to hold a responsible hearing. Reporter Mitch Mcconnell insisted there will be no holdup. Everybody will be properly vetted as they have been in the past and im hopeful well get up to six or seven picks of the National Security team in place day one. Reporter one name to generate heat is alabama senator Jeff Sessions. Gold star parent khizr khan sent a letter to the senate reminding lawmakers of sessions past battles with Civil Rights Group. 30 years ago his nomination to be a federal judge was rejected. His record since then does not give us any reason to believe those senators were in error. Trump is standing by sessions. I think hes going to do great. Highquality man. Reporter as for Jared Kushner, transition officials are saying that they will be providing details to reporters in short order, jake, to lay out exactly how Donald Trumps soninlaw will not be violating federal antinepotism laws that bar a president from putting relatives in important positions in administration. As for his daughter, ivanka trump, Jared Kushners wife, she is expected at this point, we are told, to retain the title of first daughter. Meanwhile, there are some important meetings happening up on capitol hill starting this evening. Were told the Top Republican lawmakers will begin having meetings with transition officials on a big gop priority, tax reform. Thats coming soon, jake. All right. Jim acosta, thank you so much. Trumps refusal to pub luckily point the finger directly at putin and russia comes at the same time a spokesman for the russian president says a mean tweeg tbe putin and trump is in the works and will be planned carefully. Joining me now to talk about this is democratic senator Amy Klobuchar of minnesota, she serves on the democratic judiciary committee. Thank you for joining us. You are calling for a bipartisan independent commission to investigate foreign interference in the election. The Intelligence Committee put out its report concluding moscow was behind the interference and favored trump. Why the need for a Bipartisan Commission . Why cant this be handled by the Senate ForeignRelations Committee or Intelligence Committee . I think you want both things happening. Senator mccain led a strong hearing. The judiciary subcommittee that Lindsey Graham has been involved in, wed like to do something there. Youre going to have those hearings. When you look back through history, say the 9 11 commission, you had a group of people who were devoted to working on something, not just looking at what happened in the past, which is important, but using the past to make recommendations for the future. This wouldnt be a bunch of politicians, jake, this would be experts that would be appointed by democrats and republicans to be able to make recommendations Going Forward as well as looking at what happened. Based on my trip with senator mccain and Lindsey Graham to the baltics and ukraine and georgia, the people there have seen this movie before. There have been attempts all over the world where russia has tried to influence democrats. Its no surprise that our 17 intelligence agencies came to the same conclusion. Obviously, if russia committed this interference as the u. S. Intelligence Community Says it did, this russias doing. On another level, to be perfectly candid, isnt this all a huge failure on the Obama Administration in terms of the cyber security. All this happened on his watch to his party and to the detriment of his successor, Hillary Clinton. Its easy to cast blame. This has happened to other countries as well. In our country i dont think we were ready to think that a major nation like russia would get into this kind of mess with our own country. Do i wish we had done things differently . Yes. Do i wish we had responded more quickly . Yes. My question now is how do we Work Together across the aisle to respond more quickly. The president has limited power with some of the sanctions he put forward a few weeks ago. Some today are unrelated to the cyber hacking, but he continues to do that. The best thing that i think we can do is not just keep the economic sanctions in place we have right now but also expand them. Because that is where i believe youre going to see change. We have to show economic power, and we have to show strength. Senator, as you know, the office of government ethics has asked that the confirmation process for president elect trumps nominees be slowed down. They say some have not been fully vetted by their office. Take a listen to what Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell had to say yesterday. We confirmed seven cabinet appointments the day president obama was sworn in. We didnt like most of them either, but he won the election. So all of these little procedural complaints are related to their frustration at having not only lost the white house but having lost the senate. Whats your reaction to that . Well, first of all, i am sure that some of these nominees will be confirmed and that democrats will be supporting some of them. Not all of them. That being said, president obamas nominees had their information in. They had their fbi background checks done and their ethics forms filled out. In fact, some withdrew their names because of what came out of that process. That is unprecedented. It would be unprecedented if we didnt have that information. How can we ask questions at hearings when you have a number of people who are billionaires with holdings all over the world who could have potential conflicts in their work . Were simply asking for the information that they had available before the hearings when president obamas nominees were before the committees. I believe that president elect trumps choice for attorney general, your colleague, republican senator Jeff Sessions, has handed in all of his paperwork, and i begin i believe he begins his confirmation hearings tomorrow before your committee, the Senate Judiciary committee. Based on what you know about him, do you see any reason to vote against his confirmation . I think everyone on the committee is going to give him a fair hearing here. Obviously, a number of us have concerns. We have worked with him on some things. In my case adoption legislation. Others worked with him on prison rape and other issues. But we have some serious concerns about some of his past views on immigration, on things that his vote against the violence against women act. In my case, i think thats something that has to be discussed. So i think you are going to hear a lot of questions and, again, i think its going to be tough but fairminded in our approach to this nominee. Senator Amy Klobuchar of minnesota, thank you so much, appreciate your time. Appreciate it. Thank you. Tune in to cnn tonight for a special town hall with bernie sanders. The vermont senator will take questions from a live studio audience and my colleague chris cuomo. That starts at 9 00 p. M. Eastern. And tomorrow night a special Anderson Cooper 360 with live coverage of president obamas farewell address. Coming up, the first to go before congression for his confirmation hearing. We just talked about him. Who is senator Jeff Sessions and why are some lawmakers refusing to support him for attorney general . That story next. Why pause a spontaneous moment . The north and the south are mine. All seems beautiful to me. Were back with more on our politics lead. Well take a deeper dive. Senator Jeff Sessions of alabama is getting a rare capitol hill doover. President elect trumps pick for attorney general will face the Senate Judiciary committee again for confirmation hearings. The same body that denied him a federal judgeship over allegations of racism three decades ago. Last week members of the naacp staged a sitin at sessions Alabama Office to oppose his nam nation. One of the protesters included cornell brooks who will testify against him tomorrow. Cnns dana bash took a closer look at sessions career and the controversies surrounding it. I have a man who is respected by everybody here. Reporter Jeff Sessions, Donald Trumps nominee for attorney general, was the first u. S. Senator to endorse him. This is a movement. Look at whats happening. Reporter the alabama republican gave the new york reality tv star credibility with the gop base because Jefferson Sessions iii is a rockribbed conservative. An eagle scout from the heart of the south who was a u. S. Attorney and Alabama Attorney general. Yet 30 years ago when Ronald Reagan nominated sessions to be a federal judge, democrats blocked him. Something sessions rarely talked about but did with us in 2009. It was not a pleasant event. I gotta tell you. It was so heartbreaking. Reporter he was accused of racial insensitivity, calling a black lawyer boy and Civil Rights Group like the naacp unamerican, which he denied. I am not a racist. I am not insensitive to blacks. Reporter he was pounded by democrats, including then senator joe biden. They may have taken positions that i consider to be adverse to the security interests of the United States. Does that make them unamerican . No it does not. Does it make the positions unamerican . No. That was not fair. That was not accurate. Those were false charges and distortions of anything that i did, and it really was not. I never had those kind of views. And i was caricatured in a way that was not me. Reporter now the son of civil rights activists whom sessions prosecuted for voter fraud is coming to his defense. I dont think he is a racist. Reporter Albert Turner jr. , an alabama county commissioner says he has worked extensively with sessions, who was elected senator 20 years ago. When i was talked to senator sessions about historical black colleges and trying to get historical black colleges some assistance and funding, he listened. I can go on and on about the particular issues that Jeff Sessions and i have discussed. Reporter susan collins, a moderate republican, was elected to the senate the same year as sessions. You dont agree with him on a lot of issues. We dont agree on a host of issues. Reporter still, she plans to introduce sessions at his confirmation hearing for attorney general. I dont know what happened more than 30 years ago. But i do know the Jeff Sessions that i would worked are in the past 20 years. I want a person of integrity and experience. And Jeff Sessions has all of those characteristics and qualities. Reporter sessions spent two decades in the senate fighting for conservative causes but did team up on a bill with this highranking democrat. You worked with him on legislation. This was like a miracle. Reporter dick durbin was trying to reduce the penalty for crack cocaine, which was 100 times higher than powder cocaine. Then he saw sessions in the senate gym. We both showered, putting our clothes on, about to leave. I said jeff, give me a number. If you cant do one to one and i wont go for 100 to one, what is it . It was 18. I cant tell you why. But it was 18. Reporter durbin says he disagrees with sessions on most legal issues, making it hard to support him for attorney general. Other democrats sessions got to know in the gym agree. I said to Jeff Sessions in the gym the other day, if he made you trade, head of the trade representative, we would be working together very well. We can kibbutz in the gym. You keep these positions on immigration and on civil rights and voting rights, its going to be very hard for me to support you. Reporter dana bash. Cnn, washington. Thanks to dana bash. Be sure to tune in thursday night for a special town hall with House Speaker paul ryan. He will join me and a live studio audience here in washington to answer questions about the Incoming Trump administration. You can see this only on cnn at 9 00 p. M. Eastern on thursday. Coming up, he is 11 days away from being president of the United States, but donald trump is refusing to let a dig from meryl streep go by unnoticed. Now the white house is weighing in. Then, north korea says it can launch an icbm, Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, anytime and anywhere it wants and that the u. S. Is to blame. The pentagons response coming up. I have agerelated maculare degeneration, amd, he told me to look at this grid every day. And we came up with a plan to help reduce my risk of progression, including Preservision Areds 2. My doctor said Preservision Areds 2 has the exact nutrient formula the National Eye Institute recommends to help reduce the risk of progression of moderate to advanced amd after 15 years of clinical studies. Preservision areds 2. Because my eyes are everything. The possibility of a flare was almost always on my mind. Thinking about what to avoid, where to go. And how to deal with my uc. To me, that was normal. Until i talked to my doctor. She told me that humira helps people like me get uc under control and keep it under control when certain medications havent worked well enough. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for tb. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Raise your expectations. Ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, control is possible. You may know what its like to deal with high. And low blood sugar. Januvia sitagliptin is a oncedaily pill that, along with diet and exercise, helps lower blood sugar. Januvia works when your blood sugar is high and works less when your blood sugar is low, because it works by enhancing your bodys own ability to lower blood sugar. Plus januvia, by itself, is not likely to cause weight gain or low blood sugar hypoglycemia . Januvia should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Tell your doctor if you have a history of pancreatitis. Serious side effects can happen, including pancreatitis which may be severe and lead to death. Stop taking januvia and call your doctor right away if you have severe pain in your stomach area which may be pancreatitis. Tell your doctor right away and stop taking januvia if you have an allergic reaction that causes swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or affects your breathing or causes rash or hives. Kidney problems sometimes requiring dialysis have been reported. Some people may develop severe joint pain. Call your doctor if this happens. Using januvia with a sulfonylurea or insulin may cause low blood sugar. To reduce the risk, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose of the sulfonylurea or insulin. Your doctor may do blood tests before and during treatment to check your kidneys. If you have kidney problems a lower dose may be prescribed. Side effects may include upper respiratory tract infection, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, and headache. For help lowering your blood sugar talk to your doctor about januvia. Welcome back to the lead. The pop culture lead now. The days leading up to a president ial inauguration are typically a time for healing wounds torn open during a tense election year. But with fewer than two weeks until donald trump takes the oath the wounds appear as raw as ever, as the Cultural Divide front and center when meryl streep said donald trump is the one putting on a dangerous act. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose. Cnns jeff zeleny joins me now. Jeff, i probably could have come pretty close to predicting what mr. Trump was going to respond on twitter. But i was surprised that the white house weighed in. We have seen the movie before from donald trump. But the white house reaction was interesting, jake. Not surprisingly meryl streep was at the white house on friday evening with many other celebrities attending one final farewell, if you will, to the obamas. White house spokesman josh earnest said today he was asked about these remarks at the Golden Globes. He said, look, its entirely appropriate. He said that it was a thoughtful, carefully considered message that she believes in deeply. Of course, she did not mention donald trump by name at all. But there was no mistake who she was talking about. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. Now, even before sunrise this morning donald trump was responding, weighing in, of course, os his favorite medium of twitter. He said this. He said that she is one of the most overrated actresses in hollywood. She doesnt know me but attacked me last night at the Golden Globes. She is a, quote, hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time i never mocked a disabled reporter. Would never do that. Simply showed him. Were talking about a New York Times reporter and he did actually mock him during his campaign. That is actually without dispute. The point is we are seeing a culture divide. The clintons sunday night were at the color purple, the final showing of that. The applause in the room was so different than how Vice President elect mike pence was reacted to when he saw hamilton here. We have seen this divide before. The ironic thing, donald trump would not be elected president without his own celebrity. Thank you so much. To the money lead. More Donald Trump Tweets appearing to take more credit for steering the Auto Industry back to americas heartland after other car manufacturer announced plans to invest more in the rust belt. Mr. Trump posted, quote, its happening. Fiat chrysler announced plans to invest 1 billion in michigan and ohio plants, adding 2,000 jobs. This week after ford said it will expand in michigan and u. S. Instead of building a plant in mexico. Thank you, ford and fiat, chrysler. Joining me now me is Brent Snavely reporter for the detroit free press. Thanks for joining us. How much credit is due donald trump for these announcements . He has been very outspoken with the Auto Industry and is putting pressure on them to respond and change. What appears to be going on here, though, is that our changing Market Conditions that are allowing automakers to consider or make changes that they would have made anyway and in many cases have been long in the works before trump was even was elected or even the lead candidate, that automakers are kind of positioning now in a way so that trump can take credit. What do you make of the timing of the Fiat Chrysler announcement coming two weeks before Inauguration Day . Here again, is the timing sergio marcioni said before that these changes were in works for over a year. They were in discussions with the uaw in 2015 as possible things that could come. Certainly, everything that was announced yesterday wasnt much of a surprise to industry reporters. Everything that was announced, aside from the investment figure and the job number itself, the vehicles and the products and the plant investments were rumored for months. And i was not surprised by any of those announcements. The key piece of the fiatchrysler announcement yesterday, though, was the reference, the possibility that the manufacturing of heavyduty pickups, which fiatchrysler exclusively makes in mexico right now, could could, if demand warrants in the future be made here in warren, michigan. Again, i think this is a case where the positioning of the announcement, the way its being positioned and perhaps the timing and the matter of days or weeks is being influenced by trump. But not but not the fact that they actually are doing it and that they were going to do it anyway with or without trump. Although you acknowledge that ford ceo said that mr. Trumps policies did play a part in his decision to scrap plans for a plant in mexico. What do you think when you talk about the Market Conditions changing and also when you talk about the factor that donald trump does play in this, what do you think is the driving factor behind these announcements . Is it just the Market Conditions . Is it the more willingness of people to buy suvs . Is it fear of donald trump . Is it taxes being lowered or all of the above . In a way, all of the above. So lets try to quickly dive back into and parse the ford announcement. Yes, ford ceo mark field said a number of times that the probusiness policies that a Trump Administration could usher in, could usher in, were a factor in the decision to cancel a plan to build a 1. 6 billion plant in mexico. A factor, okay. But that plant in mexico was going to build small cars. They were going to move the production of the ford focus from here in michigan to mexico. Now they are still going to make the focus in mexico, but at an existing plant. Mark fields also said and this got much less of the highprofile headlines, he also said the primary factor, the number one factor for that decision, was falling car sales. So we are in a situation in the u. S. Auto industry right now where, yes, last year makers sold a Record Number of cars and trucks in the u. S. , more than ever in history, but car sales are declining while suv, crossover and pickup truck sales are increasing. A complicated explanation. We appreciate it. Brent snavely, thank you so much. The airport massacre suspect making his First Court Appearance since five people were shot and killed. Emerging that he even questioned his own Mental Health. That story next. Were back with the National Lead now. An intense man hunt is under way in and around orlando, florida, for the man police say shot and killed a Law Enforcement officer and a pregnant woman. Police have a number of schools and neighborhoods on lockdown as they search for markeith loyd, accused of killing Master Sergeant debra clayton. Early this morning she told dispatchers she was trying to contact the suspect outside a walmart. Clayton died less than an hour later. She was a 17year police veteran and mother of two. An Orange County deputy was killed in a crash while responding to the scene as well. The walmart put out a wanted poster for loyds arrest. He was initially wanted for the murder of his pregnant girlfriend last month. In florida today the First Court Appearance for the man accused of opening fire at ft. Lauderdale airport. Esteban santiago showed no emotion as he was moved from jail to court this morning where he was formally charged in the deaths of five innocent people. Terry andress, 85yearold olga woltering. Shirley timmons, a grandmother, michael oehme. 57, in town for the cruise. The fifth victim has yet to be identified. Cnns Boris Sanchez has covered the story since it broke friday. He jameis me nooins me now. Did the killer provide any clues as to his motive . Reporter no, jake. The hearing lasted all of about 15 minutes. He looked around when he first walked into court, surrounded by u. S. Marshals and then sat at the defense table and mostly kept his head bowed through the entire hearing except to give very short answers to the judges questions, asking him if he understood his rights and the seriousness of the charges against him. All of this as we get a clearer picture of not only his life before the shooting but also perhaps some of the demons that he was dealing with. The man seen in this terrifying video obtained by tmz, pulling a pistol from his waistband and firing toward the crowded baggage claim in ft. Lauderdales airport is charged with three capital crimes. Two of which carry the death penalty. In court, 26yearold Esteban Santiago told the judge he was currently unemployed and only has 5 to 10 to his name. He added that he had previously worked as a Security Officer and served about a decade in the army. His family telling cnn that his personality had changed dramatically after his last deployment to iraq. All this as new questions emerge regarding santiagos Mental Health and just how he was able to gain access to the weapon used in the deadly airport massacre. There was no escape. I just began to play, prayed that my children wouldnt lose their mother. Reporter police say this 9millimeter hand gun had been confiscated from the shooter in november after he walked into an fbi office in alaska to tell them he was hearings voices and was being influenced by isis. But after a Mental Health evaluation, he was not deemed mentally defective. The gun was returned. How is that possible . Well, under existing law, Mental Illness can only be grounds to take away somebodys weapons if a court has ordered you involuntarily committed to a mental hospital. If you are merely surrendering voluntarily, that does not deprive you of the right to have weapons. Reporter its a loophole that baffles his own family. Translator how are you going to let someone leave a Psychological Center after four days when he is saying he is hearing voices. Reporter Court Documents say he has confessed to planning the attack. Friends noticed more erratic behavior, investigators say, leading up to friday when he fired approximately 10 to 15 rounds, aiming at his victims heads. One of the ladies that was killed was my seat mate on the plane. Her husband was shot in the face. The guy next to him was shot in the cheek. Reporter families of the victims are now providing images of their loved ones killed in the attack. Including mothers, fathers, and grandparents. Those left behind no doubt wondering how things could have been different. Esteban santiago is due in court next tuesday for a bail hearing. It is highly unlikely in this case that he is going to be released on bail, jake. One more thing. Cnn did speak to his brother, again, in puerto rico. And he confirmed that Esteban Santiago has two halfbrothers and a halfsister here in florida, though its unclear if thats the reason he picked the ft. Lauderdale airport to launch the attack. Joining me now to talk about this, republican congressman tim murphy of pennsylvania, also a licensed psychologist. Thank you for being here. Weve been talking about Mental Health issues since i started the show. I have to say, the system functioned exactly as it was supposed to and it clearly failed. It failed for multiple reasons. I pushed for a need for treatment standard and not just imminent danger standard. When the fbi standard for what . En an involuntary commitment. This also requires that a psychologist and psychiatrist on board have to do a detailed Risk Assessment. Quite frankly many are not trained for that. Fbi regents not trained for that. They may have done the handoff and said, tell us what to do, and not gather the information. Perhaps the doctors didnt gather the information. Someone who had trouble in the military. A year ago this month assaulted his wife, tried to strangle her. You need to do a more detailed assessment. This isnt someone who is just imagining things in the neighborhood. This is someone who has violent behavior. When you have violent behavior and untreated Mental Illness your risk goes up 15 times. We need changes in the law. What i pushed for before in my bill and couldnt get and i intend it push again is a change in the hipaa laws to talk about the details with the family. The Health Privacy laws. To tell his family members, we think he needs to stay here, perhaps even be committed. Will you help us . Yes. Also call them and say, what else can you tell us about his background and history. We dont know if they did that. Its a very skilled set that Law Enforcement, fbi and psychologists and psychiatrists need to Work Together on as a team. A Multidisciplinary Team to do this. This guy was a walking red flag. Absolutely. S as you note, he had beaten his girlfriend or his wife. He had been trained to kill as a soldier. I am not blaming it on that. But he had the skills and also a loaded weapon, and obviously he was saying he was hearing things. He was saying that isis was involved, the cia was making him watch isis videos. And the idea that the fbi would then hand him back his gun after he after he logged out of the hospital, checked out of the hospital shouldnt the fbi be able to like, well, i dont know if we should give the gun back to you. Precisely. But this is where i dont think fbi agents are being well trained. Theyre trying to find out if he had links to isis and look at his records and et cetera. You wonder if they put all the pieces together. I recognize my bill. I talk about my bill, it was passed law and signed with the president in december. We didnt get everything we needed and needed everything we got. We have to reintroduce parts of this bill and say we have to change some of the hipaa laws and make sure people are getting training in Risk Assessment and have more proifdeviders. The state of alaska has 89 psychiatrists in the entire state. The hospital beds are apparently understaffed too. This happens all across the nation. Its why we have done some important things in what we passed. We have a long way to go because of these glaring examples. If i had a relative wounded in this and i heard everything i heard about this guy that we know and that the fbi handed him back his loaded gun and then he went to the airport and he checked it and he had a permit for it, all that, and was allowed to fly across the country with it in stored and checked luggage i would be stunned that society was not doing more to protect me. I have to say, isnt the gun lobby trying to push back against any attempt by people like you who want to keep guns out of the hands of people who have serious, violent mental problems. I think the gun lobby is cooperative in saying people with serious Mental Illness should not have a weapon. The issue is the laws hold everybody back. I hope the families speak up. I am upset about this. I am sure theyre furious. Whats wrong with the law. It said we protected his right to be sick. His right to therefore have a weapon. Shouldnt we have been looking at his right to get treatment and the familys right to know, to help here . Something is askew with the laws. We need to address them and change them. If you were at the fbi office and you saw this guy and heard his story and the fbi agent turned to you and said congressman, should i give him back his gun, what would you say . You look at his history. Doesnt the law require it, though . If you see he has a violent history, he has been arrested before for attacking his wife, he is hearing voices, command voices, you look at the kind of delusions and hallucinations he is having. Youre saying, you wont get an answer in four days of hospitalization. The things his brother said. You have to look at stabilization on medication. This is a sophisticated review that needs to be done. Most psychologists are not trained in this too. Its a matter of being systematic and breaking away some of the legal barriers so you can do the assessment with the family and they can be treated. When you try to fix the holes that are in your bill, youll come back and well talk more. Thank you so much. Good to see you, congressman. Anytime, anywhere, thats the message from kim jong un about his Missile System that he says can reach the United States. Coming up his message to the Trump Administration. Stay with us.
