Reporter immediately there were cracks in the president s conservative base, breitbart dubbed the president amnesty don while ann coulter tweeted, at this point who doesnt want trump impeached . The white house tried to contain the fallout. The president would consider citizenship for the dreamers. Outraging hard liners. Not discussing amnesty. What the Trump Administration is a responsible path forward in immigration reform. That could include legal citizenship over a period of time. Reporter on the ground in florida, the president contradicted that. Were not looking at citizenship, were not looking at amnesty, were looking at allowing people to stay here. Reporter then insisted the wall is coming. The wall to me is vital. If i dont get the wall, then we will be coming to you. Reporter after being left out of the discussion between the president and democratic leaders, House Speaker paul ryan insisted, there was no deal. It was a discussion. Not an agreement or a negotiation. Reporter but House Minority leader nancy pelosi said her party is eyeing a path to citizenship for the dreamers. Thats in the dream act. Its a long path, like a 15 year path and this is an earned path. Reporter that would be a huge reversal for the president who said during the campaign that the dreamers along with the rest of the undocumented would have to leave the country. They have to go. What if they have no place to go . We will work with them. They have to go. Chuck. Have a country or we dont have a country. Reporter now as for the question of amnesty, you heard the president say to reporters at the white house that hes not considering that, but if you talk to immigration hard liners, jake, allowing dreamers to stay in the u. S. Amounts to amnesty and you heard nancy pelosi a few moments ago say that she wants to see a path to citizenship for those dreamers. That is obviously going to outrage those immigration hard liners, its not exactly clear yet at this point how theyre going to get to a deal on this issue of allowing the dreamers to stay in this country, jake. Aerojim, on air force one, President Trump was asked about his meeting with republican senator tim scott, the African American from South Carolina, who said that President Trump had advocated moral leadership because of his comments in which he seems to equate the nazis and Klan Members Marching In Charlottesville with those who were protesting. President trump commenting on his meeting with scott, but seeming to double down on his initial response. Reporter thats right, jake. Talking to reporters on air force one, the president tried to defend his post charlottesville comments essentially saying because of the president s protesters during the violence there in charlottesville, that he had a point. He said, many people are saying he had a point on those comments that he made about there being very fine people on both sides listen to what the president had to say. I think especially in light of the advent of ante fa, if you look at Whats Going On there, you have some pretty bad dudes on The Other Side also, and essentially thats what i said. Now, because of whats happened since then, with antifa, you look at really whats happened since charlottesville, a lot of people are saying, in fact a lot of people have actually written, gee, trump might have a point. I said youve got some bad people on The Other Side also. Which is true. Reporter jake, its unclear what the president is referring to when he says that a lot of people are saying he is a point, a lot of people says he doesnt get the point that the nazis and the White Supremacists started the violence in charlottesville. Not to mention that President Trump also said, jim, that there were very fine people on both sides. Very fine people on of course the question what very fine people were marching alongside the klu klux klan. Reporter and hes still trying to clean that up, but not confronting the reality that he simply made a massive, massive mistake when he made those comments and true to trump form, he is not admitting to those mistakes, jake. Jim, thank you so much. Joining me now from capitol hill is republican senator James Langford of oklahoma. He serves on the Senate Homeland security committee. Senator, thanks for joining us, youve expressed support for the dreamers saying that americans should not hold children legally accountable for their parents actions. Do you support a deal with democrats on dreamers that doesnt include funding for a border wall . Yeah, i would actually. We would have to work on the definition. Senator tillis and i have worked for weeks on trying to get an alternative to the dream act that does deal with the kids that are in the daca situation. Ive been clear for people that the dream act is not going to pass, but it doesnt solve the problem to ignore the issue on the kids that are on daca. They are in limbo. We have to resolve this. And as the president mentioned this morning, many of these kids graduated from school, they have got jobs, theyre very engaged, productive members of society. They are here and should be here. We have to resolve this legislatively. As far as the issue of not having a border wall, that doesnt surprise me quite frankly. I know the logistics, the department of Homeland Security has yet to explain to the committee exactly what the wall would look like, where they would put it exactly, how itd be construction, the final cost of it. All of those things are still up in the air. Until they can resolve those things, we shouldnt have a border wall funding issue. They need to be resolved what theyre asking for so congress will know what theyre funding. Were not ready for that that the point. We are ready to deal with daca. We are ready to deal with lots of other issues with Border Security. We have to establish how do we deal with the parameters and prevent us from future immigration coming to the country illegally. Weve got to stem that flow. All those are issues that i think we are ready to deal with and should. You say that the dream act cant pass. And you and senator tom tillis of north carolina, fellow republican, have an alternative. How is your bill different . Were not working through the details yet. Were working through our own conference. We have working on it for a while. Hes on the judiciary committee. And so were bringing that expertise to it. Were working with our colleagues both republican and democrat to be able to get a good bipartisan agreement that we feel would actually pass and we could be a law. Weve worked with the white house, ive personally spoken to the president about this. We continue to work through white house conversations to make sure were on the same page before we move forward on this. Trump supporter sean hannity said that this move by President Trump could be political suicide supporting some sort of legal status for the dreamers, do you agree . I dont. The vast majority of people i talk to, regardless of party or people that dont connect with a party want this to be resolved. This is one of those issues that for a very long time has hung out there. And new mexico this is resolved, you cant move on to a lot of other issues. So these kids and these individuals in my state, there are 7,000 of them. Need to have some kind of resolution, what president obama did to them was put them in a two year limbo every year exposing them and their parents to real issues and real risk on deportation. They were aware of that when they got into the program, now theyre in the program, what President Trump has done is said within the next six months we need to solve this legislatively. Trump cutting deals with pelosi and schumer is what people like ted cruz warned Republican Voters about that President Trump wants to make deals, hes not wed to conservative ideology and in fact in the past hes been a democrat and he gave senator schumer campaign contributions. Does that bother you . It doesnt. Were dealing with congressional review acts. Were dealing with the Supreme Court nominee. Were dealing with health care, should pass with 51, oofbl we didnt get that done. Those are things you can do with 51. Once we get passed that, everything has to be 60. This is a season to be able to turn the page and say okay, weve been on the partisan moving as much as we can, now we need to move on the bipartisan side because all the rest of the legislation and the senate takes 60 skroets. So thats 52 republicans plus at least eight democrats. Itll require negotiations. And quite frankly, was one of the frustrations we had under president obama was he was so focussed on his pen and the phone and doing executive actions, we didnt have the opportunity to sit down with the president and try to find the way to be able to get deals. So it doesnt bother me for the president to sit down with them, it was entirely appropriate far president to do, would have been good for president obama to be able to do with our leadership and republican leadership. Obviously it didnt happen. But it needs to happen. Thats part of governing. Senator langford, stick around, we have more to talk about including russian interference in the 2016 election. Dont go anywhere. Plus, who knew what when . New questions about the deaths of eight seniors at a nursing home in florida. We knew that the situation had gotten tense between President Trump and his Attorney General Jeff Sessions, but we didnt know just how tense. Were now learning because of the New York Times more details about a very contentious meeting between trump and sessions. Meeting that involved sessions offering his resignation to the president. This was all over the appointment of the special council to head up the Russia Investigation. The New York Times Maggie Haifrman is breaking the story. Maggie, whats new here . Maggie habarman is with me. Maggie, we have known that things got tense between President Trump and Attorney General sessions, but we didnt know the extent. Tell us your reports. Thanks for having me on, jake. We knew that there was, there was several bad moments between the Attorney General and the president. The original thing i think in the president s mind was recusing himself from russiarelated probes. Russia did that after he had not revealed during his Senate Confirmation hearing that he had had meetings with the Russian Ambassador during the campaign that reaccuse sal was almost a certainty, but the president considered it some form of a betrayal it would seem. In an Oval Office Meeting in may, as they were trying to pick a new fbi director, they learned that Robert Mueller had been appointed to special council and the president just unloaded on his Attorney General, called him an idiot. One of the worst decisions he made. And sessions who got emotional during this said he would. Et left, ultimately produced a letter of resignation, but the president was talked out of accepting by some aids. Returned, but this issue surface began at some point in july. Their relationship has improved, but its never going to be what it was. The degree of anger the president has at Jeff Sessions is never going to evade. We should point out that steve bannon, the president s former senior strategist just a few days ago said that the president s decision to fire james comey, the fbi director, was the worst political decision in modern history. So, steve bannon at least putting the blame on President Trump, not on the Attorney General, but also, whats interesting is, you have in your story sessions saying, telling associates that hes never felt more humiliated or embarrassed than after that dressing down. Weve heard similar comments or read about them in the New York Times about the chief of staff, marine general kelly, saying that he has rarely or if ever been spoken to the way that President Trump has spoken to him. Yeah, the president has a ability to really make people field demeaned. Who he considers to be in his employee. He tends to be nicer to people who are at a distance who he thinks he might be able to woot a a certain point. Theres a certain strain there. Weve heard this for a long time, for months this came up in josh greens book about steve bannon. That the president had just, you know, unleashed a torrent of insults on his then Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort over a story that alex burns and i wrote that he was upset about, you know, faulted the Campaign Chairman for. He can be, he can be a very, very tough person to hear from. Maggie haberman providing more details between President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Called him an idiot and suggesting he should resign. Maggie, thanks so much. Thank you. Now to the national lead. Who knew what and when. Thats what police want to know as they investigate eight deaths at a hollywood, florida, nursing home in the wake of hurricane irma. Today we Learned Police now have a warrant to search the property. This as we learn more about the eight seniors who died. The oldest, 99yearold Albertina Vega would have celebrated her 100th birthday next month. Who knew whether the proper channels were followed and the right individuals were notified. Miguel marquez is at the facility right now. Miguel, there are serious questions about what steps the nursing home took in the days before the deaths. There are, and it depends on who you talk to depends on which answer you get. The state agency investigating this says the nursing home and the Dehabilitation Center had ample, ample opportunity to speak up and say they had either a problem with the power or the Air Conditioner or both, multiple times before the storm, during the storm, and after the storm, and they never did until 7 30 a. M. Yesterday morning. That was after the evacuation was already under way. Police here in hollywood, florida, lay out just a grizzly sort of House Of Horrors in that situation. 3 00 a. M. Wednesday morning, they get a call, somebody in Cardiac Arrest there. 4 00 a. M. , second call, somebody having Respiratory Failure there. Shortly thereafter, another call from the same facility, a nurse at the nearby hospital 50 feet away, memorial hospital, she goes over, checks out the situation, she finally rings the alarm bell and thats when this Mass Evacuation basically a mass casualty event starts to unfold. As investigators are looking into this, they discover that another person had expired on tuesday. The day before, had already been sent off to the funeral home. The Medical Examiner for Broufrd County takes the extraordinary step of bringing that person back from the funeral home in order to determine whether they died from heatrelated issues as well. Eight people, so far, under the 39 have been admitted into Memorial Hospitals here. I want to make very clear, memorial has no relationship with the rehabilitation clinic, 39 patients are at memorial right now being treated. It is possible the death count could go up. Just an awful, awful situation, jake. Just horrible. Miguel marquez, thank you so much. Our world lead now, new details about the extent of facebooks role in russias Interference Campaign in 2016. The Social Media Giant may have sold even more ads to russian operatives looking to spread pro kremlin propaganda more than initially disclosed. Heres our correspondent, drew griffin. Reporter this is only a glimpse inside a shadowy russian Propaganda Machine a few seconds of undercover video at a nondiscrypt Office Building in russia. Taken by a former worker in 2014. Its called the Internet Research agency. A company u. S. Intelligence officials called russians troll army. A statefunded organization that blogs and tweets on behalf of the kremlin. Facebook is one of the top sites russians target to spread their fake messages. That is why congressional investigators are demanding Facebook Open up its own records, help track the fake russian news, find out who was behind it. Were seeing more evidence of additional ads and how they are used to manipulate individuals. Reporter what facebook has already found and released is troubling. The company said it believes russians with links to the Internet Research agency paid facebook 100,000 in advertising associated with 3,000 ads, all connected to 470 inauthentic accounts. Thats just what facebook has said so far. Behind the scenes, cnn has learned the Social Media Megacycle is scrambling to find out the full extent russians used facebook to Target Americans during the 2016 campaign. There may be more ad buys bip russians that havent been found according to sources, inside the company. And worse, the sources tell cnn it could still be happening. Sam wooly and his team at Oxford University tracked big news and social media during the campaign. And says facebook and other social media sites should be acting much more quickly to answer questions. Facebook needs to be held accountable for this. They absolutely are able to track and know Whats Going On. They have very robust Machine Learning mechanisms for understanding the way that networks function and where attacks originate. Reporter facebooks Marketing Tools made it easy for russias Internet Research agency or anyone else, not just to spread fake news, but spread it exactly where they want it. Specific states, specific voters, with specific interests. For example, posting on the pages of women between 20 and 45 from wisconsin, who like Hillary Clinton, and it works. Russian Internet Trolls set up this facebook group, secured borders. Which had 129,000 followers, and even tried to organize an antiimmigration rally in idaho last summer. Thats according to russian journalists who uncovered the secured Borders Facebook site as part of his investigation into russian trolls. He says more than a dozen russianbacked facebook groups had millions of followers. They had about 12 or 15 12, 50 million visitors to that facebook groups per week. Reporter the fake sites, the fake stories, were mostly negative about Hillary Clinton, and either supported or promoted far right conservative positions that were being pushed by donald trump. Experts say the overall effect was to spread so much disinformation it all just started to look real. Attacks on so thecalled Mainstream Media played right into the russians hands. How did facebook not see this, jake . That is a big question. Not just for congress, but were learning inside facebook as well. One of the reasons Facebook Says the russians bought all of those ads using its selfservice tool. Basically buying ads like youd make on online purchase, no Human Interaction at all. No facebook employee involved. Jake. Drew griffin, thank you so much. And were back with the republican senator James Langford of oklahoma, he serves on the Senate Intelligence and Homeland Security committees. Senator, facebook sold ad space to russians last year, and much of that was used to boost or spread fake news, attacking Hillary Clinton. And we have no idea how this effected the election, but it happened. How serious a problem is this and what do you think should be done to combat it if anything . Yeah, it is incredibly serious. Its one of the issues that facebook is trying to walk through the process on how do they handle this on the future . It wasnt just fake news to attack Hillary Clinton. It was fake news to attack everything. It was the most divisive issues they could find in the American Culture and they would spread it as fast and far as they could. Facebook has been very outspoken to talk about it. Started the process on it, we need to continue the process dealing with facebook and to try to figure out how to be able to resolve this. The government does not need to be in the business of trying to edit social media or edit any media of any type. Facebook is aware they dont want the platform to be used for situations like this. They have already dealt with situations like this in europe on the facebook platforms there as the russians attacking the french elections or german elections or other things. Theyre not new to this, but theyre new to the american verks of facebook. We have to be able to help them resolve this and they have to take the lead on their own platform. Do you think facebook should be held accountable . Should the Intelligence Committee, which youre a member of, call them, the executives to testify or should they produce the ads and all information and have complete transparency about their role in the russians trying to interfere in the election. Yeah, let me be clear on this, i dont think facebook was complicit in helping the russians, i dont think they were attentive to something they should have been atentative to. And then determine what theyre going to do. I think it is entirely appropriate to be able to continue to visit with the Intelligence Committee and maybe even in a public setting to do that, and to be able to get the word out. Heres what weve seen. Heres what happened, heres what were doing as a responsible actor to make sure that our platform is not used for nefarious means in the future. That should be them taking the lead on that. We can be a participant and encourage. It. I think the American People would encourage that. We dont need to have government stepping into a Social Media Platform and determining for them whats appropriate content and whats not appropriate content. All right senator James Langford of oklahoma, great to see you, thanks for being here. Good to see you again. 25,000 an hour, thats the cost of tax payer funded Government Jet that the Treasury Secretary wanted to use for his honeymoon. Now the Treasury Department inspector general, he has some questions for Steve Mnuchin. Stick around. With the pole, and i had to make a claim and all that . Is that whole thing still draggin on . No, i took some pics with the app and filed a claim, but, you know how they send you money to cover repairs and they took forever to pay you, right . No, i got paid right away, but, at the very end of it all, my agent wouldnt even call you back, right . Before Steve Mnuchin flew to europe with his new wife, third wife, he asked about using a Government Jet to fly them off to scotland, france, and italy. That move would have Cost Tax Payers 25,000 an hour. Mnuchin later withdrew that request. The general will be looking into every request for and use of a Government Plane by mnuchin. You might remember last month when the couple flew to kentucky in The Path Of Totality where they watched the eclipse from the roof of ft. Knox, she posted this picture of herself and mocked a woman on instagram who asked if the government paid for the journey. Joining me now is brianna keeler. What is the official explanation, brianna, for why he felt like he needed a Government Jet to fly him on his honeymoon to dwrurp . Theyre saying basically it was him making sure he could do his job. He asked to use the aircraft on the honeymoon, treasury says there are National Security issues, north korea, iran, venezuela, among others, it is imperative he have access to secure communications. In the end the secretarys office determined they could get secured communication capabilities without using a Military Aircraft so then the request was pulled. Its a Let Them Eat Cake moment that comes on the ig is already reviewing the other trip you mentioned, jake, official trip that mnuchin and luis took. And did get into big trouble when she posted that glamorous photo of her and her husband exiting the Government Plane on instagram. She tagged all the high end designers, the outfit she was in was at least 3,000 worth of clothes, not including her handbag, and so when a Working Mother of three criticized her in the Comment Section of instagram and lynnton laid into her, called Her Adore Bli Out Of Touch and the woman hadnt given more to the economy either in tax or just selfsacrifice. It was a huge controversy. Now you have the ig looking into all of the travel on Government Planes and all of the requests for travel even as an outside Watchdog Group has sued for information on that kentucky trip. We should say, brianna, its not just democrats who do government groups talking about this, republicans are annoyed with him, but it has to do with his handling of the debt ceiling. Thats right. Because the president agreed with democrats to this threemonth extension of the debt ceiling much to the chagrin of republicans. So secretary mnuchin went to the hill to try to sell them on it. A lot of them dame out of the meeting with him and said they were less sold on it than they were going in which is quite an accomplishment. And the thing that really upset them was that he said quote, do it for me. They felt that was ridiculous he said that. And all of this happening with secretary mnuchin, its coming as he as the administration and republicans are set to reveal details of individual and Corporate Tax cuts, right . And theyre expected to yield rich people getting tax cuts. So that is the backdrop in which all of this is happening. I think a republican congressman said that the meeting with mnuchin was even more tone deaf than his wifes instagram post. Thats how bad it was. The achievement. Brianna keeler, thanks so much. We have a lot to discuss with my political panel. Lets start with President Trump and his comments about his meeting with senator tim scott. Tim scott a conservative republican, African American from South Carolina who expressed concern about President Trump abdicating his moral leadership in the charlottesville, in the wake of Charlottesville Fight Being killed. Take a listen. I think especially in light of the advent of antifa, if you look at Whats Going On there. You have bad dudes on The Other Side also. And essentially thats what i said. Now, because of whats happened since then, with antifa, you look at really whats happened since charlottesville, a lot of people are say, in fact, a lot of people have actually written, gee, trump might have a point. I said, youve got some very bad people on The Other Side also. Which is true. He had been asked, Mary Katherine about his meeting with tim scott, tim scott who had a private meeting, wanted to express why he was concerned about his comments, and that was his response. Yeah, he wants to be right and hes not good at laying things to rest. And as usual, these are some of the things he said. Its not all that he said, the most egregious things he said was that there were some fine people at the White Supremacist rally. On the part about being different kinds of Political Violence and people actually acknowledging that in the weeks following that. That part is true. But im not sure it helps his relationship with scott or this story to continue to revisit it, but he will. Stephanie, senator scott responded just a few minutes ago saying when read the quote from President Trump, thats who he is. Its who he has been, and i didnt go in there, meaning the white house, to change who he was, i wanted to inform and educate a different perspective. I think we accomplished that. And to assume that immediately thereafter hes going to have an epiphany is just unrealistic. Yeah. An epiphany. An epiphany about how bad white supremacy. The long history about racism. Its a pretty pathetic day when were talking about a president needing an epiphany on those subjects. And i appreciate senator scott going in there and trying to educate the president , but i think Mary Katherine is right, he is who he is. This is what he believes. Nothings going to change that. No matter how much this white house tries to spin a story otherwise. Theres also some Breaking News this afternoon, New York Times reporting, we talk abouted with maggie, one of the reporters, about this meeting between President Trump and Jeff Sessions where President Trump so was upset about the appointment of Robert Mueller to be the special council that He Furious At Sessions who had recused himself from the matter, called him an idiot. Suggested he should resign. Sessions apparently very emotionally shaken by the meeting did submit his resignation, ultimately President Trump did not accept it. But another window into how difficult it can be, can be, to work with President Trump. Look, i think the long and probably Successful Campaign to make Jeff Sessions sympathetic continues apace. So donald trump has achieved that. Look, i think this is a very hard administration to work in. And you do not know when youre on his good side or bad side. I think scaramucci thought he was until the very moment that he wasnt. As all of them do. It seems like they have healed this relationship to some extent, i think probably a New York Times story will make him think about this again and perhaps make him angry about it again, then it will be revisited as many things are. And again the point of this, the point of why hes upset is that hes upset that Attorney General sessions recused himself from the Russia Investigation so that he did not have control over jim comey, and, you know, bannon, steve bannon has said it was President Trumps firing that was the mistake there, although i think bannons suggesting it was kushners fault as well. But really, when you get down to it, this is about russia and the Russia Investigation. Oh, absolutely. And i think that president trumps reaction to it shows you just how weary he is. The fact that bob muler is running a special investigation into everything about your life and everything about the people around you wider, a wider investigation than i think comey was going to do. Well, i think thats probably true. But, you know, Everybody Knows bob muellers track record and his credibility. And his professional record on this. And you know, i think, i think trump is going to be upset with Attorney General sessions far long time. Lets talk about President Trumps dinner last night. He had chinese food with Chuck Schumer and nancy pelosi, i dont know what was in the generals chicken, they walked without the contours of an agreement of some sort about finding soninlaw sort of protection for dreamers. Maybe with increased security at the border, although not funding for the border wall. Ive read a lot of angry tweets by conservatives today. Angry at, while some are angry at President Trump, some are angry at republican leadership, i dont really follow that. Yeah, no one knows why theyre angry at anything. No, i think look, who could have imagined that donald trump not an ideological lifelong democrat would sit down with a fellow new yorker and hash out a deal over chinese food. Im shocked. But look, i think, look, i am, i am on board with protecting the dreamers. Im weary about how you do that and how you make that deal. I think many republicans in leadership are fine with the deal. Frankly it is a step to the right to make it a constitutional way to protect them instead of the unconstitutional way that obama admitted he did it. This is not what trump voters signed up for. And the question is can he shoot the wall in the middle of fifth avenue and get away with it. That remains unclear. Thats nice, very good. Stephanie, listen to senator minority leader Chuck Schumer. They will never learn he had a hot mike, talking with his aids about his relationship with President Trump. He likes us. He likes me anyway. He likes us, he likes me anyway. A little sally field moment there. Really, really loves me. I think thats probably true. I mean, they do have a relationship that goes pretty far back. Chuck schumer is the senator from new york. And i think that Chuck Schumer knows thousand make deals how to make deals. And the president wrote a whole book on that. We dont know what happened in that room. But i think the president understands that he needs to actually finally get something done, and democrats will work with him on that. As long as he is willing to come forward and protect these young people. But i dont think theyre willing to give in on any of the hard Core Principles weve fought for. Speaking of not knowing why anyone is angry, when ryan and mcconnell hold up this bill to add some actual Border Security because they dont feel like its sufficient and the entire party turns on them, were just, were done. Were through the looking glass. I dont know. Its interesting because, this is this is i mean very different from what Hillary Clinton would be trying to do that the point. I guess she would have she would have tried to pass a law protecting the dreamers. Maybe throw in some Border Security, democrats have voted for Border Security in the past. Except, i dont think she would have had a willing Republican Party coming to the table wanting to work with her on that. I think the ryan, Mcconnell Party would have made things very difficult for her if she won. They would not have wanted look what they did to barack obama. Im just unconvinced by the whole tour and i think many frankly, many times i think how the heck did donald trump become president and then hillary reminds me how bad the two choices were, and i dont think shes grappling with what happened here, that doesnt mean there arent many reasons, but she is a principle reason that she lost. And she has said that. She said she takes responsibility and but. For everything, i think shes right to point out that there was russian interference, and it probably did cost her votes. We dont know how many, but when you lose an election by 77,000 votes, which ultimately that came down to, there are a lot of Different Reasons she lost that vote. And shes the candidate. She says she takes responsibility. I think she has ever right to be doing, writing this book, doing this tour. No one questions her and breathing in public. All within her right. All right.
