Ambassador sondland told me that President Trump told him that he wants president zelensky to state publicly that ukraine will investigate burisma and alleged interference in the 2016 election. Ambassador sond lond told me he now recognized that he made a mistake by earlier telling the ukrainian officials to whom he spoke that a white house meeting with president zelensky was dependent on a public announcement of investigations. In fact, ambassador sondland said everything was dependent on such an announcement, including Security Assistance. Ukraine involvement in 2016 has been proven false and burrisa hired joe biden son, hunter biden. You could hear a pin drop as the ambassador laid out his Opening Statement. Reporter a source familiar with the testimony said sondland was only speculating about the political investigations. Sondland told taylor the aid may have been frozen because of corruption generally or because the europeans werent giving enough money to ukraine. The testimony fills in the gaps between the Text Messages with other diplomats over the summer in which taylor raised alarm over the delay in money for ukraine. As the nthe new ukrainian president was vying for a meeting, sondland texted, are we now saying that the aid and meeting are conditioned on investigations. Call me. As i said on the phone, i think it is crazy to withhold Security Assistance for help with a political campaign. Hours later after speaking with trump, sondland replies, bill, i believe you are incorrect about President Trumps intentions. The president has been crystal clear, no quid pro quos of any kind. Taylors appearance behind closed doors left some democratic lawmakers rattled. This is my most disturbing day in congress so far. Reporter meantime republicans said theyre still waiting to hear from witnesses closer to the whistleblower who set off the impeachment inquiry. These are the people with supposedly the firsthand knowledge who gave the whistleblower the information that formed the basis of his complaint. Reporter now this makes clear, this Opening Statement, how uncomfortable taylor was about accepting the job originally and how concerned he was about the backchannel diplomatic efforts and in his Opening Statement he continued to note that the backchannel diplomatic channels through Rudy Giuliani were the ones that appeared to be taking over rather than what the top diplomat in ukraine was trying to do on behalf of the u. S. Jake. Sara murray, thanks so much. Lets chew over this. And phil mudd, let me start with you. Is this testimony significant . If so, why . Yeah, for a couple of reasons. The big ticket item is, we knew at the phone call, the president was squeezing the ukrainians for Opposition Research and the question was fuzzy but this gets us more than one step closer and i think mr. Sondland has more questions to answer based on my quick read and that is direct linkage between our taxpayer dollars and the request for ukraines to do Opposition Research and this names a lot of names. Gives the democrats on the hill a lot of potential to say i want to talk to other people to corroborate this. This is rough. And lara, from the top diplomat in the u. S. Ambassador in ukraine describing a call with ambassador sondland running the point when it comes to the president s push for this and said ambassador sondland tried to explain that President Trump is a businessman and when a business man is about to sign a check to something that owes him something, the business man asks him to pay up before signing the check. And then he goes on to say Ambassador Kurt Volker used the same terms. What do you make of that . I make of it that there is he was not mistaken, but he thought there was a quid pro quo at stake here. He is not mistaken that was a oneoff, it was a calculated concerted effort to have taxpayer dollars, not the check of a businessman writing from his own slush fund or his own checking account. But from the powerful purse of congress that is fueled by taxpayer dollars. So what you have here is what we think the idea of the text, this is crazy, how can this be conditioned in this way. Guess what . He had reason to believe that based on a series of events. And talking and reading through it still, notice the detail of this document. This is somebody who has receipts, several of them. It is hard to undermine his credibility or say maybe he got some aspect wrong. He kept notes. He relayed them. It is very, very clear that the reason he took this position in the first place is because he knew the importance of ukraine and their vulnerability and it is exploited. He saw it and reported it and he called him on it. And that is interesting, mary katherine, because one of the things that we lose sight of is this 400 million in aid to the ukrainians, one they desperately want that money to defend themselves against russian separatists and two, it is not President Trumps money, it is our money, taxpayer dollars. And that is the crux of the inappropriate nature of this obvious from the second they said here is the thing we did and here is the transcript of us doing the thing. Now whether there was an explicit quid pro quo or how far that went, the money did get released, those are open questions which is why were working on this. But the Trump White House as usual is like, yeah, we did the thing, here is the transcript. You sort of have the goods from the beginning. Get over it. And alamo Mick Mulvaney attempting a a walkback. Youre god damn right i did order the code red. And i think this stuff is damaging since we saw the text last month between sondland, the ambassador to the e. U. And bill taylor where he said i think this is crazy and sondland text back lets stop talking about it on text. That is a paraphrase, yes. Has to be other i was or trump will say i made up words. He said call me. No the words were i suggest we stop the back and forth by text. But now you have 15page testimony and laura is right it is harder to undermine a person like this but doesnt mean they wont try. This is the Trump White House. Would you be interested to know how long he keep this is job and so he could have bullet points and pictures to explain it and well be furious. The phone call summary established a quid pro quo and were back filling and making clear how it worked out and what amount of money was at stake, who said what where but it is clear from the beginning that this is impeachment offense and there was a quid pro quo and even without a quid pro quo asking someone to investigate your political rival is outrageous. I want to put this in context. To the average American Voter out there thinking if this is not impeachable or if this is accepted, lets put it that way, what does the United States look like in a future where it is okay for the president , or the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs committee or the chairman of the Senate Foreign policy to push Foreign Governments to do things like that. What does that look like. In the last few days Silicon Valley said were seeing iranian and russian interference and you would say of course were interfering. The americans have invited people to participate. The president said on a public podium, why doesnt the russians get Hillary Clintons emails. I would say just a bit of irony here at 4 30 in the afternoon. The president squeezing the ukrainians on corruption while hes holding up money so they could investigate a political rival is really precious. I mean, lets push them to investigate corruption except at the white house. I think ill leave that one aside you know how much donald trump fighting corruption. One thing he did mention in this letter is he did not realize and thought maybe with holding the aid was about a meeting with the white house. Which in his mind i think he thought, well perhaps that is as far as you want to take it but he said it is the first time i realized the Security Assistance not just the white house meeting was conditioned on the investigation into burisma and hes talking about hunter biden and his ties and this is what the whistleblower complaint had to say which corroborates another aspect of the white house and now this person is very credible and the document does it again. And mary katherine, i want to raise the issue of hunter biden and this is the point that interceptor made eloquently which is putting aside for one second if we can the president s lies and behavior about this and the prosecutors have said there is no evidence of any criminal wrongdoing by hunter biden, but still thats the whole situation with him on that board, that stinks. It is swampy is one word for it and hes admitted to it, im stepping down because it is not a good story. Biden doesnt want to talk about it because it is not a good story. There is something there. It is not the thing that trump thinks is there and it is again inappropriate to have a Foreign Government trying to investigate your domestic political adversaries. We have americans to do that, jobs americans will take. And i dont understand that component is okay and President Trump sparking a racial controversy in the middle of this. Because why not. Why not throw some racial logs on the fire. He called the impeachment probe a lynching. And then as bill taylor stunning new testimony enough to convince. . As a key witness testifies in the house impeachment inquiry, President Trump is lashing out, comparing how hes being treated in the investigation to a, quote, lynching. Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders treating, no lynching was racial terror by White Supremacists who murdered thousands of africanamerican men and women and children. If you are nervous about an impeachment inquiry you should not have violated the constitution, unquote. As Kaitlan Collins reports. Many republicans are publicly backing the president s term lynching. Reporter President Trump has derided democrats impeachment probe as a witch hunt and a fraud. But today he drew swift condemnation after he went even further and likened it to a lynching. Trump tweeting at the impeachment inquiry is without due process or fairness or any legal rights as he urged republicans to remember this in the future. But critics said he should remember the past. Democrats immediately rebuked the president for invoking the racist history of barbaric white mob murders of black people. You knew exactly what he was saying and exactly how it would come across. Why would you use the term lynching. Why would you say that . Reporter members of trumps own party distanced themselves from his words including majority leader mitch mcconnell. Given the history in our country, i would not compare this to a lynching. That was an unfortunate choice of words. Reporter tim scott the only africanamerican republican senator had this to say. There is no question that the impeachment process is the closest thing of a political death row trial. So i get his absolute rejection of the process. I wont use the word lynching. Reporter the president did find a vocal defender in Lindsey Graham the senator from South Carolina who endorsed his choice of words. So yeah, this is a lynching in every sense. This is unamerican. Reporter at the white house, aides insisted trump wasnt comparing himself to one of the darkest moments in american history. Hes receiving zero due process from democrats on the hill and that is what hes talking about. Are we going to talk about this or continue with the tweet . [ inaudible ]. Reporter the president s tweet coming as pressure on the white house over the probe is intensifying. Is this intended as a distraction . Reporter a steady stream of current and former officials have continued to testify under oath on capitol hill. Despite a white house vow not to cooperate. Today a new cnn poll revealed that 50 of americans now support impeaching and removing the from office though his Approval Rating is remaining steady at 41 . Now, jake, when jim jordan another one of the president s allies was asked about his comment today and whether or not it was appropriate, he said he thought the president was frustrated over this whole process with impeachment but that is something weve heard from republicans today. Theyre frustrated with the president using this word because now theyre having to defend that instead of attacking democrats for what they say is an unfair impeachment inquiry and instead focusing only on the president s use of the word. Kaitlan collins at the white house. Thank you so much. Joining me now is democratic senator mazie hirono of hawaii. Senator, what is your reaction to the testimony from bill taylor . He gave an Opening Statement we obtained and he said that he was told that President Trump wanted a public commitment from the president of ukraine, that ukraine would conduct these investigations into matters that the president wanted investigated, that would help him politically such as into the bidens, et cetera, in exchange directly in exchange for military aid for ukraine. What is your reaction . Apparently mr. Taylor took really accurate and extensive notes. And his testimony from what ive read as to the Context Content of his testimony is that he corroborated and provided context what the president when he said to the ukrainian president i would like a favor though. One of your democratic colleagues today called taylors testimony, a quote, sea change. Do you think that is true when it comes to republicans . Im not exactly holding my breath because they are still busy trying to defend the president the president s actions. And so i do think, though, this testimony is further corroboration that the president asked a Foreign Government to get dirt on a political opponent for his political and personal gain. Congressman Gerry Connelly said it is more urgent now that trumps former security adviser john bolton testified but the white house made it clear theyre not cooperating and the people who have testified have done so because they were subpoenaed. John garamendi of maryland i believe suggested that if witnesses wont cooperate, the sergeant of arms may need to take them off and haul them to the capitol jail. Is that a serious option the democrats are talking about . I dont know if that is a serious option but the fact is that the white house and the president is stonewalling every effort on the part of the house to subpoena or have witnesses testify. So that is still what we should be focusing on and i think the house would consider adding that kind of behavior to their articles of impeachment. I want to ask you also about the news that cnn broke at the top of 3 00 eastern that the Anonymous Senior Administration official from the Trump Administration who wrote that New York Times oped in september of 2018, that individual is now writing a book. It is called a warning and it basically is still anonymous. But it makes a case against reelecting President Trump. How do you feel about Senior Administration officials or former Senior Administration officials do this kind of thing anonymously . Well i wish they didnt feel as though they have to do these things anonymously, but regardless they are privy to how this president behaves and the kind of priorities that he puts fo puts forward and it is what it is and they think the best way to get the points across is anonymously and at some point i hope they come forward. There is no question that the president continues engage in all kinds of behavior that we could disagree with from a policy standpoint including his muslim ban and his precarious decision to remove our troops from northern syria, the issue of the potential resurgence of isis as a result of that action. On the one hand. But there are a whole bunch of policy reasons why this president should not get reelected and then the constitutional mandated impeachment process which is what the house is engaged in. And by the way. Can i say when i heard the president use the word lynching with regard to what hes going through, to liken a constitutional inquiry process to mass murder of blacks by murder of blacks by mass mobs in our country is just i was so appalled that i hardly had any words to say. For those who are coming forward to defend the president s use of that word, i just want to say to them, do you not know anything about the history of our country and the racism in our country . These are im just appalled. The only person ive heard defending the president s use of the term is your colleague senator Lindsey Graham. So what would you say well maybe everybody else will just not go there. That would be good. But what would you say to him if he were in front of you right now because he has used he said it is a lynching and he said, quote, it is a lynching in every sense of the word, unquote. I would hardly have the words to say to lindsey how because he has turned 360 on first criticizing the president when he was running for president himself and then turning around and being one of the prime defenders of the president. So lindsey is hes going to say what hes going to say. I totally disagree with him. And i am just so saddened and appalled by lindseys continuing defense of the president. Democratic senator mazie hirono from hawaii. Aloha. A number that could rattle the white house. The new cnn poll numbers next. The republican reflex is to defend President Trump but today his likening of the impeachment inquiry to a lynching. That is not the language i would use. It is very clear that what the democrats are doing here does not go across does not have due process. It is not fair in the process. It is not something that this house has done ever in the past. Why wouldnt you use that word . I dont agree with that language. It is pretty simple. Well that is something. Lara, let me go to you. What do you think President Trump declared on twitter that the impeachment inquiry was like a lynching. What was your response when you heard that word. I was irate and disgusted and dumbfounded because the president hasnt been castrated or dragged into a square and hung with a noose around his neck and tortured and put oil all over his body and reduce him to being a swine over a roast and that is what happened in lynchings in america. Over 4,000. Not just africanamericans but 3 4 to africanamericans and things like unpop youll sayrity and unfounded crimes and allegations. The president has a Million Words at his disposal to be more apropos to talk about what he believes a baseless allegation against himself but to reduce lynching to thinking that it is if im inconvenienced by a charge against myself then im involved in a lynching. I dont like it when now just Clarence Thomas used it talking about the anita hill hearings as a high tech lynching or when bill cosby spoke about it because it was inconvenience to him about allegations and cannot be reduced in this way and were here we few weeks before halloween where the term is a witch hunt. That might have been better in this instance but to have the president of the United States given all of the things hes said by race up to this moment in time to be completely inept to understanding the racial dynamic in this country, we dont reduce things in that way and lynching is not one of the categories to reduce and use as a cole o cole oak wal punch line. Murdered by White Supremacists and trump used that word to describe impeachment. Im as disgusted as laura and im less dumbfounded because hes a racist and when his back is up against the wall he does racist things. Did he tweet in this way because hes winking at those who show up at his base in rallies or is he rude and crude on twitter. It is an eternal mystery. Youre not sure if it is one or the other or both. But Lindsey Graham is the real villain of today. Let me interrupt you and come right back. Lets play the sound of Lindsey Graham defending the president s use of the word lynching to describe what hes going through. It shows a lot of things about our National Media when it is about trump. Who cares about process, as long as you get it. So yeah, this is a lynching in every sense. This is unamerican. Go ahead. It is a lynching in every sense is what he said. Every sense. Apart from the lynching sense of killing someone in the graphic way that laura just described. It is ridiculous for a man from South Carolina where 164 people were lynched in different counties and graham was born the month before emmett till was murdered in mississippi. He should be ashamed of himself but clearly Lindsey Graham has no shame any more. I hear trump defenders saying he does things like this to get us chasing a distraction instead of talking about the bill taylor testimony but we are capable of talking about both. But do you think there is a rhyme or reason there is the bit of the agent of chaos stuff. But if you think it is a distraction, you dont have to defend it. And in this case, you absolutely should not it is ludicrous. It is a impeachment is a constitutional process. And if he thinks this part of the constitutional process is being it treating him unfairly, hes welcome to talk about that but we have all agreed in society we should not minimize lynching. That is one of the acts in this countrys history that we have all agreed is super egregious. That should be a Society Standard and im not opposed to speech codes but that is a fair one and he throws it out brazenly. It is about a decade ago, i think, i might be wrong on the timing, but i think a decade ago the United States senate took up avenue bill to formally apologize for lynching. Yeah. I think were giving the president way too much credit here. Look, he cant figure out what the name of the secretary of defense is. He sent a ridiculous and embarrassing letter to the turks that suggest the what tillerson said, hes undiscipline pd and lazy and he cant spell check when American Kids are occasionally reading his tweets and cant bother to spell check and gets off the phone and said were out of syria without talking to anybody and decides on the fly in Southeast Asia to see the koreans and hes undisciplined and lazy and i dont think today he understands what lynching is. Do you agree. Im more in the camp of he just does not think through im in the camp as well but im in the camp thattes a clear racist. Like send her back in the summer. That was his choice to go after the squad. He could have done anything else. Im in the camp that said the president of the United States is asked to lead the United States of america and should be aware of the implications of his words and time and time again he steps on a rake he already knows is there and then asked us to excuse and give the benefit of the doubt when he has a bump on his head because of it and this is an instance when the president and Lindsey Graham should know better and frankly i think they do. But this issue is what you are talking about as well, mary katherine, impeachment is a directive that the Founding Fathers gave and said to check an abuse of power you have this as an option. You can exercise that. The president seemed to disregard the notion of the constitutional mandate of checking powers, separation of powers as being too inconvenient to take seriously. That is also an issue. Stick around. We have more to talk about. Sources telling me that a book will soon be published in november by the anonymous senior trump Administration Official who wrote the 2018 New York Times oped describing what they call amorality and detailed an effort inside of the administration to thwart President Trumps worst inclinations. The book about President Trump is titled a warning and due to be released november 19th. A Draft Press Conference describes the book as explosive with a, quote, shocking firsthand account of President Trump. White House Press SecretaryStephanie Grisham responding by saying, quote, it takes a lot of conviction and bravery to write a whole book anonymously and matt latimer who works for the agency that represents anonymous wont tell us whether or not they work for the administration and keeping their identity secret and a sizable amount of the money is giving to the White House Correspondents Association and others. How do you publicize this book. You cant do press because they are anonymous. You could do by writing. You cant defend the book because how you could defend it but the real story, if your the publisher, you have to be saying i hope the book, when you buy the book, it is published at a time when no other story will trump the book that were publishing and what do you get . Right in the middle of a story more compelling w for free on tv every day. And unless they have a great story i dont know how this beats what is happening in impeachment. Here is why i think it is bad timing. You have the arguments about why to protect the anonymous whistleblower and have the people be the adults in the room to come forward in the safe ways or channels to communicate the way American People want to hear to acheck abuse of power and now you have in a way undermined by the notion of anonymity should be for everyone on the planet. There is a reason why whistleblower are protected, because we want people to not be punished for providing information. This is why we want to have anonymity. But having said that. I will read the book koofr to cover and probably look at it in a credible way and think what are they saying about the issue and if you are adam schiff trying to with the whistleblower, youre saying how do i make this argument in a dual fashion and it is hard. It is possible this person will be subpoenaed through the publisher and the literary agents. I dont know what is in the book but presumably details of things that the house investigators want to know more about. And they shouldnt have to be subpoenas. Little johns, yeah 3, what . what was one a Endless Supply of chinook, they are now endangered in the Pacific Northwest which caused officials to cancel the fall fishing in the Columbia River and as bill weir reports and it is causing residents to make a very difficult choice. Reporter as much as air or water. So much life in the Pacific Northwest depends on salmon. Over 130 species rely on the nature original food delivery but fewer are surviving the heroic swim from open ocean to spawning streams, hundreds of miles inland. And that means trouble for two creatures that really love the king of fish. Killer whales and us. In your grandparents day the Columbia Basin produced a neverending supply and salmon the size of people but they are extinct and this year the numbers are so low the fall fishing season was canceled. The estimates are will 17 million salmon would return every year, the greatest salmon fishery in the world. And now it is about a million. Reporter and most of those are hatchery fish. With weaker genes and less fat than the wild cousins. So the southern resident killer whales that live on chinook are starving. There are only 73 of this kind of orca left on the planet. And after a grieving mom pushed her dead calf around puget sound for weeks it rekindled a decades old debate, salmon versus dams. What would you say to folks that would say the best thing that could happen for these animals is to take the dams down . I would say for the army corp of engineers, were looking to do the right thing. Were looking to operate the dams that are here while taking a close look at what the future of these dams are in the region. Reporter to find the birth stream, many chinook out of the pacific must navigate eight dams. Four on the columbia, four on the lower snake. These are the four that would likely come bound first. But removing a dam takes an act of congress. And will meet stiff resistance from special interests like wheat farmers who need dams and locks to float their crop to market. And since Bonneville Dam alone could provide carbon free power to a city the size of seattle, the debate divides on all sides. Wee doing our best to improve the conditions through the migration and the river for the salmon and make sure that we keep power and fish could coexist in the Columbia Basin. Reporter but 13 species remain threatened or endangered even though the federal government has spend over 16 billion trying to make damned rivers more fishfriendly. Yes. The salmon could cross the fish ladder but the Columbia River is too hot. The reservoirs behind the dams have caused this hot water problem because theyre stagnant absorbing a lot of solar radiation. And then couple that with Climate Change and that is pushing that over the edge to make the river too warm for salmon to survive. Reporter and it is not just the rivers. Scientists are worried that the infamous blob of warm water off the washington oregon coast is back. So were wondering, wow, is this going to is this happening again. And this is kind of alarming because it is so close on the heels of that past event. Reporter dams of long have been concrete symbols of human ingenuity but now with entire e ecosystems in hot water, how much longer can they stand . Jay inslee sh the governor of the greenest governor in america is being very careful on this issue, jake.
