Lets party people we now learned the modeling one more time projection cited by the president and the task force has already revised upward. Are you surprised . No, im not surprised, jake. You know, this particular model, the one thats coming out of university of washington is the one that the white house has cited several times. You know, there is a couple things that you know i think are important to note about the model. First of all, to get to the numbers of deaths that they were projecting, close to 100,000. That was predicated on the fact that the social distancing plan would be fully enforced in the country and last until may. And that was supposed to happen by tomorrow. I think given that doesnt look like it will happen, some more states are putting these stayathome orders. Not enough, jake. A new coronavirus hot spot thats rerised the model has emerged not in a major city upwards. Such as new york or detroit, but based on the fact, do we have in a rural county in southwest enough surge in these hospitals . The modeling predicts some are georgia, which includes the not. Small city of albany, georgia. So the numbers will continue to get revised i think upward, state Health Officials say it jake, until some of those things likely all started with a funeral after a retired janitor are met. Died from a heart attack at the sanjay, the fda delivered an end of february back when both Emergency Operation for an antibody test, northern as a President Trump and georgia governor kevin were downplaying the risks of the virus. Serology test. Explain to the viewers how mourners gathered and they significant that could be. I think this could be very gathered closely together to pay significant, welcome news, jake. Their final respects. As cnn diane gallier reports, basically what the theft is, its a simple test. Its a strip. It has some virus on it. Thats when residents say the they take some of your blood and domino effect started. Reporter mel murray has put it on the strip. Endured a lot of pain over the if your blood has antibodies on last 30 days. It, it changes color you back on february 29th, hundreds basically know at that point you of family and friends came to have antibodies in your blood. The small georgia city of albany what that means is you were to say goodbye to andrew exposed to the virus. You were infected, even if you mitchell. The man she loved for several had no symptoms, it means you years. After several hours of hugging have already been exposed to the each other, murray started virus. That tells you a couple things. Feeling sick. First of all, it gives us an that night my mother went to idea of how widespread this is. Bed. She had a fever. Also, jake, i think more we didnt even know it at the importantly, then you probably time. Reporter the 75yearold was have some immunity to this. Presumably one of the first inial bone to be exposed to the you know you could have more coronavirus. Confidence that you wont get she was hospitalized, not immediately tested. It. Its a big deal, simple test. I knew things were going to if it can be made widely availableing jake, and i wasnt be bad, but until it hits you, taking it from somebody who needed it more, i would get the you know, thats when are you test done. Sanjay, a group of prominent wow, its here, its now. Reporter a positive test on march 10th from a visitor who scientists has informed the attended the funeral tipped the White House Coronavirus can be spread by a carrier not just coughing or sneezing in somebody Health System off. At least 20 of the first elses presence, but maybe even patients to be diagnosed with coronavirus in albany had just speaking or breathing in attended one of two funerals in somebody elses presence. Town. A second trip to the hospital that seems a tremendous confirmed murray was one of them. From there, the cases jumped. Significant development. To the first day, service six yes, no question, my colleague was reporting on this. She obtained a letter sent to the next day, it was eight the next day. The white house about this. It began to cascade from that look, you know in some ways, jake, this was not that point. Reporter so far more than surprising i think to a lot of 5,000 people have been infected scientists, because we had known with the virus in georgia. That there is asymptomatic 163 have died. Nearly a quarter of those are spread. From the albany area. Asymptomatic spread, which i as the virus rips through their think people may generally know what that means. It means you dont have any rural community, for so many here, its overwhelming. Symptoms like coughing or with us being a small city, sneezing. Yet, you are still spreading the were not in new york. Virus so how are you spreading but we are still impacted and the virus . You are spreading it through when you look at the percentages your breath, by talking, doing of our population thats the things that i am doing right impacted. Now. I have no symptoms, but if i that still is a significant have the virus, that can spread it you know to a certain number. Reporter scotts diner which distance away from me. Serbs southwest georgia says so its now been sort of more they blew through six months you know recognized i think and worth of personal protective equipment in one week. Described you know by these we got 4500 warriors. Thats what these people are scientists. Flat out warriors that do this but you know weve had a general idea that this was happening day in, day out. Already for some time. They put themself at risk. They run into the fire when does it change the way we others may run away from it. Fight the virus in anyway . I think that you know one of reporter some of the Office Workers have traded their the big things is that if you computers for sewing machines, start to assume thating look, making mask covers, an attempt you can spread the virus and to extend the use of ppes. Have no symptoms. But even stirnlgs steiner says if you conceptualize that in they only have enough right now for less than two weeks. Your own mind, that means, for we have seen that curve go example, this big issue of mafblgs when you are out if pub up. We have not seen it bend over masks when are you out in yet. Reporter the governor public is something worth deployed the National Guard to considering like you and i talked about. It sounds simple. Set up additional intensive care units. We have shipped necessary it shouldnt take away from supplies and plan for shipments hospital workers. Those arent those kinds of masks. Im talking masks you wear when based on the needs of the d. B. You go into public not putnam system in the future. Necessarily to protect yourself reporter as for murray, she but to protect other people. Is back home now. Why . Because if you have the virus, her daughter says many in this you wear one of these cloth family and small community, the mavengs masks, you might road to recovery will be long. Its hard watching her decrease the amount of the virus you are putting out in the environment. I think in one way in los suffer. Reporter yesterday governor brian kevin issued a state wide angeles the mayor recommended people wear masks if they go out stayathome order that goes in public. Most people should stay home. Into effect tomorrow. They have been dealing with from for weeks here in albany. You may see that more widely adopted, jake. Right now, more than 90 of jake, skied that hospital ceo if he thought they were turning a the corner, if they seen the the American People are right now or will be soon under some worst of it already. Form of stayathome order. He shook his head, looked down and told me no, they have not. A lot of states, for instance, florida, which is to be frank, dianne gallagher, thank you kind of late to the stayathome so much. We should note that governor kevin inexplicably said today he order table as you and i have did not know until the last 24 discussed, are providing religious exemptions. Stay at home, but its okay to hours that some time some of the go to your local church, people carrying the virus were asymptomatic. Synagogue, mosque, whatever. That, of course, has been Common Knowledge and publicly discussed medically, you know im a person of faith. By many individuals, including i understand and believe in dr. Fauci, literally for months. Religion, but medically, does now, if you go south and west of that concern you . Yes. Georgia, you will hit louisiana. You know, look, im like you, which is reporting a major spike jake, i think maybe for some people, a lot of us, faith has in coronavirus with more than 2700 new cases today alone. Never been more important. We feed people to rely on and things to believe in when louisiana now has the second Something Like this is highest death rate in the happening, no question. Jake, i mean, this is country from coronavirus per scientifically completely goes capita, just behind new york against the evidence here. Sta state. Joining me now is dr. Robert you, that type of gathering heart, the executive vice unfortunately, its very president and chief medical difficult to socially is distance. Hospital of auschner health, the we know the virus can spread like this and people can take it home to their families, to their largest Health System in louisiana. Communities. It can be considered despite thank you for joining us. The state reported 7700 new that its a religious occasion, gathering, its still very cas selfish if you go ahead and cases, new cases in one day. How bad is it on the ground and infect other people as a result of this so you know so i know how much worse do you expect it that the scientific knowledge is to get before it gets better . Out there. I think people sort of get this at this point, that that would jake, we are certainly seeing be not just a danger to themselves, but maybe to the more and more cases. People they love as well. I think the big jump that we saw so if you are not doing this for today was due to somewhat of a yourself, at least do it for other people, so you know, jake, backlog of the testing that as you know as well, there is weve talked about frequently. Technology, you hear about all these religious organizations we were able to get a lot of those tests in. Through technology, skype and so it did give us somewhat of a surprising spike, but one that things like that and streaming can still allow people to gather we partially anticipated at some virtually, but scientifically, it doesnt make sense, its not point. But it is a severe test for all sound. Dr. Sanjay gupta, thank you of the Health Systems today and so much. I will see you tomorrow. Automatic people. And i have to tell you the way you can see sanjay tonight along people have stepped up and with Anderson Cooper hosting the responded to this, its really kroefd facts and fears. Their guests this evening will been incredible to see. Include dr. Anthony fauci as but we know it is going to continue to get worse. Well as new York Governor Andrew Cuomo right here on cnn 8 00 weve all seen the numbers. P. M. Eastern time. We have a stay at home order in coming up, a job market decline place about ten days ago. Hardly any american alive has so we know that takes about two weeks to see. Ever seen and a new report just and so, we are hoping that we out that predicts more economic will see that have a nice effect on the number of cases, but catastrophe, plus, why infected patients seem to be getting currently, you are hospitals sicker in one area of the continue to expand as we continue to take in these cases. Country. Stay with us. Life isnt a straight line. And, doctor, new orleans officials tell cnn one of the reasons they hypothesize one of the reasons it might be hitting and sometimes, you can find yourself so hard in your state is the heading in a new direction. Population demographically has a but when youre with fidelity, higher rate of Underlying Health a partner who makes sure every step is clear, conditions. Do you agree . Does that affect your planning theres nothing to stop you from moving forward. For what could be an influx of patients . Yes, it certainly does affect our planning. But you know here in louisiana, that we do have some of the highest incidents of hypertension, underlying kidney disease, heart disease, lung disease. All of those go into it. So weve had to really look hard at how we began to set up more intensive care beds. They are constantly moving, taking some of our beds that used to be medical and surgical beds and converting those to intensive care beds, because we know were going to require more intensive care than perhaps other population without the underlying disease. Louisiana governor John Bell Edwards said in the last week the number of coronavirus patients in hospitals have doubled in louisiana and the number of patients on ventilators have doubled and he warned that the state could run out of ventilators as soon as next week. Is that true . Is it that dire . How soon could you be facing a moment where you actually have such a surge in patients you cant handle them all . Right. So thats always in the back of our minds and that continues to drive our efforts to continue to get the ventilators in. We know that our ventilator usage is up over 100 from what would be considered normal prior to the coronavirus. Our icus, we have grown by probably 70 now and we anticipate to grow those icu beds by another 30 to take in all the patients. We do have shipments coming in off ventilators, but it is a concern to know that at some point we may not have those options available. The good news is, we have different types of ventilator that we can use based on the severity of the patient so sometimes we have to use a stepdown ventilator for a patient who may be continuing to improve and get better. So we can use the more intensive care ventilators on those of our sickest patients. Dr. Robert hart, thank you so much and god bless the medical workers in louisiana and i hope you get everything you need. Thank you, theyre all working very hard. Appreciate it. I know they are. New unemployment numbers out today are unlike anything this country has ever seen 6. 6 Million People filed for unemployment last week alone and when you add in the 3. 3 million from the week before that, thats about 6 of americas work force that has been out of a job and is applying for unemployment right now. A new dire Economic Forecast from the Congressional Budget Office this afternoon projected things could be bad for quite some time. Estimates showing that in the Second Quarter the Unemployment Rate could even exceed 10 and still could be at 9 at the end of next year. 2021. The end of 2021. Lets bring in Senior Business anythingor julie tatterly, state sites are crashing. People are complaining. Endless hold times. Some governors admit they cannot keep up with the demand of up employment compensation. So what, what are people supposed to do . Keep trying, jake. There is simply no other choice. You just said it there in the numbers. Were talking 10 Million People in the space of two weeks trying to file for unemployment benefits. The websites, the unemployment offices, they simply werent built for this volume of people calling up and trying to get access to benefits. Its overloading the system. In certain cases its thousands times what they used to processing, at the federal level, the state level, theyre trying to hire people. Try doing that in a time of social distancing the problem with the data as well we are just seeing the states that went down into lockdown first, accelerating in these claims. So the backlog is still to filter through and the biggest problem here, its just going to take weeks to get money to people. Cnn mabu raju on manu raj gu indicates it could take up to four weeks for stimulus checks to be mailed. We have a website to help those who do not have direct deposit relationship will not be ready any time soon that website. So the functions of government are not work, in terms of the stimulus funds getting to the people immediately. And this is the problem. Deem with the checks first. In the past, its already taken an average of two months to get a check into somebodys hands so we knew there was going to be a problem. Ive spoken to you before about the fact that 60 of people that filed taxes last year actually gave their direct deposit information. Its the other subset of people qualifying for checks we having a says to. If this website isnt up and running, so what . Another six weeks, plus three weeks to try and get the money into peoples bank accounts. Were talking two months beyond the lockdown. Two words, financial crisis for individuals involved. And julia, some banks are warning tomorrow will be utter chaos. Tomorrow is when Small Business owners could begin applying for these stimulus loans. Some lenders say they need clear rules or vetting borrowers, for giving floens they keep employees on the payroll. There is questions about they can apply in person or online. Are these issues going to be irorned out fast enough for tomorrows deadline . In 24 hours, jake, absolutely not. Remember the Small Business association is now promising to give out ten times the amount of loans that they made in the entire year in 2019. But this for me is not even a processing issue. When i saw and got my hands on a sample of the form, i was so excited. Its so simple. This is it. There is little check boxes, so simple to fill in. I was excited. Then i realized the lenders its too simple. Theyre worried about the fact that theyre going to be giving out fraudulent loans. Theyre saying they need protection. The bottom line is were not. We have breaking news for giving money to people. We still have outgoing you, the commander of the uss happening. Something has to happen soon to theater roosevelt is expected to fix this. Cnns early reporting nitdz wuhan in early state your name suggested the numbers were not adding one up, when compared to the front lines, in part because of something many countries are challenged with. A shortage of tests. Its really emotional for me. Reporter she told us it took four days for her uncle to get tested. The results also delayed. I dont think its because they really want to control the numbers, but i think its more about the capacity. Reporter kyle told us by film his mother died in january in wuhan. She never had a nucleic acid test, her cause of death was listed as severe pneumonia. During her treatment, the doctor said it was very likely she had coronavirus. Yet she was not a case, help could not be counted. China says they first detected the virus at this wuhan seafood market. They did not shut it down until january 1st. During that threeweek period, the people continued on with their normal lives as local government officials censored socalled rumors about the then Mysterious Illness and silenced whistleblowers, who tried to sound the alarm. He was reprimanded by police, later died from the virus and now the Chinese Government is hailing him a hero. The countrys National Health commission officially began releasing daily figures on january 21st, almost six weeks after the first detection, within days they reported a total of 1052 cases in Hubei Province along, those in hong kong challenged these figures believing the real number to be 40 times that just in the city of wuhan. One possible reason, carolina in the early days, not allowing International Experts in the country. For weeks, health and Human Services secretary, alex azar said the cdc was ready to deploy, hoping to get a hand him on the problem before it got out of control. We are ready to go. Reporter a world health team did not land in china until february 10th. Again almost two months a every the first detection and now two months after that, experts still doubt chinas official count. Reporter the Chinese Government say there is definitely large transparency, the local government is boosting the appearance of the good performance. We really dont have the information and evidence needed to be more confident about the Chinese Governments number. Reporter its a claim the Chinese Government has repeatedly shot down. The fact is that china has always been opened, transparent and responsible on informing the World Health Organization and International Community report. The one number the Chinese Government has pushed out quite frequently is the recovery number here, jake. They are stressing the vast majority of people that get this survive. Just after this week, Health Officials began releasing asymptomatic cases. There has been a lot of push for that. The new concerns is lockdown restrictions ease is both without symptoms and those infected from other countries may expose others to the virus. Then we could see here sa second wave of infections in a place where it really all began. Jake. All right. President xi of china certainly has a lot of blood on his hands, its not just of his own people. Coming up, its almost 5 00 eastern. Some of you might already be breaking out the merlot and getting ready to watch tiger king over a cocktail or five. We will talk to a psychologist about how to cope in this new isolated life and how to know if your new daily witch wal is becoming a problem. Stay with us. Some are calling her their chlorin queen after celebrity chef getting ready for cocktail hour aka any hour went viral. So just pour it right in. Oh, doesnt that look fabulous . Nice and cold . And lots of it. Alcohol sales are booming right now with so many people staying in and trying to deal with all this anxiety. But where is the line between enjoying a drink, relaxing and something more serious . To talk about this, and other quarantinelike problems is our clinical psychologist georgetown psychology professor andrea bonnier for a weekly session. Andrea, what are you telling your patients about drinking . Yeah. Its really tough. Because if ever there were a time when people were more tempted to drink, even if they dont typically have a problem, it would be now. With retrapped at home, we are feeling lonely and bored at the same time. And the alcohol might be one of the only things thats left in our cabinets right now. So im seeing a lot of clients struggling with this question of what is too much and where to drawn the line. And the first thing i work with them on is figuring out, are they trying to escape uncomfortable feelings . And if they are, might there be better and healthier ways to do that . Or are they sort of loosening themselves up a little bit. Taking a little bit of the emoff . Because i think there is a slippery slope there between taking the edge off versus developing a situation where your money coping mechanism is to try to numb the hard feeling also. These feelings are tough. Were sad, were scared. We might be angry. We might be stressed and very, very for elf. So the more we turn to alcohol to avoid those emotions, then the more we teach ourselves that those emotions are scary sapped that we cant handle them and that we cant handle them. Thats where the problem lies. I hear you. I also wonder, i dont know what its like at your house, but we might be a little more lacks with the screen time rules at the shea tapper these days, because kids are going through a tough time. We dont need to pretend these are normal times, obviously, nobody should be abuseing any drug or alcohol. Do you have a rule . Do you tell people in terms of the loosening up as opposed to escaping emotions part of it . Do you say you should only be drinking twice a week or how do you gain . Yes, its hard to quantify exactly. I think what is less important than the actual amount is the feelings afterwards. A lot of times you kind of know when maybe you overdid it or its happening too much or you feel worse afterwards because the problems you were trying to escape and the specific worries that you had are now coming back in full force and you werent able to do anything about them. So i think if there is one hard and fast rule its to observe yourself before and halfwhat are you running from . And then afterwards, did it help . Was it okay i was able to breathe and relax with that glass of wine and now i actually feel better armed to get through tomorrow or was it, oh, i tank too much, i feel gross and more scared than i did before i drank, so its hard to quantity tie because no 22 people are alike.
