The European Union and canada and the uk have all been able to dramatically slow the spread while the u. S. , thats the one in green, is adding tens of thousands of new cases each day. In just minutes dr. Anthony fauci, the nations top Infectious Disease expert, will join us in an exclusive interview to talk about the escalating Coronavirus Crisis in this country. Though its unclear whether he or any Health Experts on the Coronavirus Task force will attend todays briefing. It doesnt seem so, meaning its possible, if not likely, that this event after our show may be less focused on the pandemic and possibly more focused on the president and his reelection campaign, though i guess we shall see. President trump is tweeting that mask and talking about how wearing a mask is patriotic combined with todays event. This comes as white house advisers have sounded the alarm to the president that his poll numbers have been plummeting. Reporter after largely ignoring the surge in new cases, President Trump will revise his daily Coronavirus Briefings today amid questions about whether his Health Experts will join him. Dr. Fauci, will dr. Birx be here . Reporter sources told cnn that as of this morning, no Health Officials were expected to attend. And even they seemed unaware about the plan. Theyre still figuring that out. If they want me there, id be more than happy to be there. And if not thats okay too. As long as we get the message across. Reporter instead, the White House Press secretary said that the president is the one who should be providing information to the nation. Hes the right person to give the information to the American People, and, boy, does he get the information to a lot of the American People during his briefings as noted by the ratings as he himself pointed out. Reporter claiming they were no longer worth the time and effort, trump scrapped the briefings in april after he was widely panned for suggesting that americans use disinfectants to treat covid19. I see the disinfectant that knocks it out. Reporter the president appears to have changed his mind but not necessarily because infections are surging across the u. S. Or because americans are waiting days and sometimes weeks to get test results. We had a good slot and a lot of people were watching and thats a good thing. Reporter sources say trumps sinking poll numbers and inability to hold big rallies are driving his return to the podium. Do you know were not allowed to have a rally in michigan . Do you know were not allowed to have a rally in minnesota . Do you know were not allowed to have a rally in nevada . Were not allowed to have rallies. Reporter today former Vice President joe biden accused trump of ignoring the pandemic. You know, hes quit on you. And hes quit on this country. I think i look better in the mask. Reporter the president s low poll numbers also played a role in his decision to finally encourage americans to wear a mask saying its patriotic and there is nobody more patriotic than me. Just hours later he ignored his own advice during a fundraiser at his nearby hotel where he was seen in a video interacting with supporters without a mask on. The White House Press secretary justified trump going maskless by revealing he is sometimes tested multiple times a day. The president is the most tested man in america. Hes tested more than anyone multiple times a day. And we believe that hes acting appropriately. Reporter now, jake, the white house has been facing questions all day about whether or not the Health Experts are going to show up. So well see if they change their mind from the plan as of this morning. But i do want to note about what the topics could be at this briefing because we were told by sources that when the president was discussing bringing them back, he told his aides that he did not want to solely focus on coronavirus at this briefing. And so thats why on the schedule it doesnt say Coronavirus Task force briefing. It just says the president is going to hold a news conference. All right, Kaitlan Collins at the white house, thanks so much. Joining us right now is dr. Anthony fauci. Dr. Fauci, thanks so much for joining us. So obviously the u. S. Is in the midst of this Public Health emergency. Nearly 4 million confirmed infections. More than 141,000 deaths. I guess my first question is have you been invited to participate in the White House Briefing today . Im assuming that im i think im having some audio problems. Dr. Fauci, okay, dr. Fauci, can you say that again . Were you invited to the briefing today . I was not invited up to this point. Im assuming that im not going to be there because its going to be in just a short while and im still here at the nih. So im assuming its not going to be there. Whens the last time you spoke directly with the president . Oh, i had a good long conversation with him towards the end of last week. I think it mightve been thursday. Okay. So you havent briefed him for today. Since the last president ial Coronavirus Briefing three months ago, were seeing now infections at an alltime high. Hospitalizations are increasing to peak levels. If you were at the briefing today, what would you tell the American People . What should we know . You know what i would say, jake, is what we mentioned the other day when we had the telemeeting with the governors is that there are really some fundamental things, principles that if we implemented that i believe we could turn this around in those Southern States which are getting hit really hard right now with the numbers that you just showed a few moments ago. There are really some key issues. I mean, things like universal wearing of masks, close the bars. Stay physically distant. Outdoors better than indoors, particularly if youre going to have restaurants. Sparsely seat people separated from each other. Wash your hands. Theyre really fundamental things. Its not rocket science. If we all did it uniformly, jake, i believe that we could turn things around because weve shown that when you do those things, particularly the physical distancing and the universal use of masks that you can turn around the kind of surges that were seeing. We are trying to emphasize that. And i hope that gets listened to. Ive also heard Health Experts say in addition to everything you just laid out that the u. S. Needs to identify and isolate the virus so as to keep people from spreading it. And that would require, it seems, a National Campaign of much more aggressive testing, quicker turnaround time for results, and detailed Contact Tracing. If somebody tests positive, you find out everybody they came in contact with the previous week or so. Do you have any idea why the federal government is not attempting a Manhattan Project like approach to this going after the virus that way through testing and quick results and Contact Tracing . Well, there certainly are attempts to do that. But we still have to make it better, jake. One of the things that i hear when i call up colleagues that i know that are in the trenches is one of the things that is an issue that we need to do better in. Some places are getting it right. But others the time frame from when you get a test to the time you get the result back is sometimes measured in a few days. If thats the case, it kind of negates the purpose of the Contact Tracing. Because if you dont know if that person gets the results back, at a period of time thats reasonable 24 hours, 48 hours at the most, when you get to six or seven days, that kind of really mitigates against getting a good tracing and a good isolation. So weve got to do better on that. So, i guess the question is how then do we do better on that . Some of these labs are federal labs. And so theoretically the federal government could put more money into them, buy more supplies, hire more staff. Some of them are private labs, which means that President Trump is the only one who has the power to invoke the defense production act and require more equipment to go to those labs and require that those labs hire more people as an official act. Is it going to take the federal government doing something about it . I mean, because were six months into this. And testing results still take far too long as even the testings are admiral giroir acknowledged. Is it gone ka take an act like that to increase the speed . Well, im not sure what it would take, jake. But certainly we need to do better when it comes to that. There are certain things that are being done quite well in certain areas and others not. It really is patchy. It isnt as uniform as we would like, that every single state, city, every county, every place where we need it is doing it at exactly the same level. As a whole we need to improve it. We know we need to do that. But youre the Head National Infectious Diseases expert. You have an idea of how federal labs are working. You talk to people who are in the trenches. What are they telling you . Do they need more money so they can buy more equipment and hire more people to do the lab testing . I mean, whats the story as to the lag time . Because, as you note, thats a real problem. If i get tested on a monday and i dont find out until saturday that im negative or positive, thats a whole week lost. Yeah. Well, it differs from whom you speak to, jake. As i said, i talk to people in different places, be it new orleans or florida or any of the other different places. And it really differs. One of the common denominators is that when you get surges like youre seeing now, it kind of overwhelms the system a bit and even places that were getting tests that were back in an expedited manner, now were having trouble because there are a lot. So, just the number of tests that you do doesnt always give you a right reflection of how well things are working or not. You really got to make a smooth transition, as it were, from having a certain level of testing to racheting it up and still getting the results back on time. So its been a difficult situation. People are trying as best as they can. But as i said we need to do better, particularly when youre dealing with the surges that were seeing now in some of the Southern States. The president today insisted that the u. S. Is doing great when it comes to handling this virus compared to the rest of the world. Empirically, thats not true. The u. S. Is currently, according to official numbers, the Global Leader in cases, the Global Leader in deaths for contacts. The u. S. Has about 4 to 5 of the worlds population. 4 to 5 of the worlds population. But we have about 25 of the worlds covid19 deaths. This weekend President Trump called you an alarmist. I know you dont like to get involved with tit for tats with the president , but do you think you are an alarmist . People have their opinion about my reaction to things. I consider myself more a realist than an alarmist. But people do have their opinions other than that. Ive always thought of myself as a realist when it comes to this. Four vaccine candidates have shown promise turning to some more positive news. And those four vaccines are now headed into large human trials. You have long expressed hope that a viable vaccine could be ready for the first stages of distribution by the end of this year or the beginning of next. Do you still believe that . And is there one of these vaccines that you are more hopeful about than the others . Well, i certainly still believe that, jake. I think the timetable that weve discussed now over the past several months luckily and fortunately is really worked out okay. The results of several of the phase one trials of different candidates not only one, im reluctant to point out one thats going to be better than the other because the proof of the pudding is whether it actually works in the field and is a safe and effective vaccine. But the good news is that theres more than one candidate out there, and theyre going to be entering into a broader phase three trial to truly determine efficacy and also continued work on safety. One of them is going to go into phase three trial at the end of this month, at the end of july. And thats something that we hope over a period of several months since its going to be a large trial of 30,000 individuals, 30,000 volunteers, that with the degree of infection that is still ongoing in the community, we feel well be able to get an answer in the timetable that you just mentioned towards the end of this calendar year and in the very beginning of 2021. When we get that, i believe and im cautiously optimistic about it, that we will have a vaccine that well be able to start distributing to people in this country. Dr. Peter hotez, professor and dean at Baylor College of medicine, one of your proteges, he is warning people that the first vaccines might not be the best vaccines. Do you think theoretically people should wait to get the best vaccine, that there might be some wisdom in that . A good point. And the answer to that is a resounding no. And ill explain why, jake. Because a vaccine will not be approved by the fda unless it clearly shows that its safe and its effective. So, if the first candidate that reaches socalled finish line, that doesnt mean its the only candidate. But i would not wait to see if one was better than another. Because the very fact that it get approved by the fda means that its good enough to protect you. The relative percentage of how good its going to be, you may get one vaccine thats a bit better than the other. But i would say that some protection by a vaccine is certainly better than no protection. So, i like the idea about there being multiple candidates in the queue. And i hope that we do get approval of more than one candidate because we need a lot of vaccine, not only for people in the United States but for the rest of the world. So were hoping for a more than one winner. And when the first one comes out, if its available, i would encourage people to get vaccinated. Today we learned that President Trump is tested multiple times a day. Thats what the White House Press secretary said. How often should a president be tested . Well, it depends on the circumstances and to whom the person was exposed. When i go to the white house, you dont really go in particularly if youre going to see the Vice President or the president without getting tested. So i went down there yesterday for a certain period of time, and i got tested. So, i mean, you get tested in order to make sure that you protect the president for the obvious reasons, he is the president of the United States. Its extremely important that he stays protected. Lets turn to the return to school, which is obviously on the mind of lots of parents and teachers and children across the country. Education secretary betsy devos and the president have insisted that schools across the country need to reopen. Have you spoken to them about your recommendations and your concerns about every school taking all children in for inperson learning even if the virus is still spreading out of control . Jake, i have not specifically spoken to the president or to secretary devos about that. But we have discussed this in the presence of the Vice President at the Coronavirus Task force meetings. Because this is obviously a very important problem. You know, in everyone when i think about that, i want to take a 40,000foot look and say as a fundamental principle, i do agree that we should try as best as we possibly can to get the children back to school because of the welldocumented secondary downstream ripple effects that are negative, particularly on the patien the parents and the children. So if you agree that the general principle is to try as best as you can to get the children back to school, i think you have to put that in the context that an important issue in that is to make sure you do whatever you can to safeguard the safety and the health of the children as well as the teachers. And that should guide your policy. Just say, i would be delighted to send my kids back to school. Remote learning is horrible, especially for younger kids. Its just not the way that kids are supposed to learn. But obviously i also dont want to risk their lives or risk them picking up an Infectious Disease that spreads to me and my wife or their grandparents, et cetera. And this is where i come down. I dont understand why if its so important to our federal leadership that kids go back to school, and i agree with the principle as you do why we dont have testing up to speed so that the day before school kids can all get tested. Teachers can all get tested. Administrators and custodians can all get tested and then there could be tests at the school every two weeks or so with obviously everybody washing their hands, wearing masks, et cetera. I would feel much more comfortable. And yet what im hearing from the federal leadership is go back to school and nothing along the lines of and heres how were going to protect your children. Well, there are so many different models of that. And i think whats being discussed now, jake, is different types of approaches to do what i just said to adhere to the principle of getting the children back to school. But in order to safeguard them, their health and their welfare as well as the teachers to do some sort of modeling of different versions. And ive heard different versions from different principals and different superintendents about the schools scheduling, about morning afternoon, about alternate days, about more outdoor than indoor if you possibly can, protecting the vulnerable. But also what youre talking about, about testing. Although i havent heard it discussed in detail about elementary or middle school, nearly many of the universities are talking about the same model that youre talking about, more universal testing before you get in and intermittent at different intervals surveillance testing. That clearly is being discussed at the level of universities and colleges. Whether or not that is even going to be discussed with regard to elementary and middle and other schools, im not sure. The u. S. Surgeon general today, dr. Jerome adams said that the u. S. Needs to lower the transmission rate to get schools reopened. I want to play for you something i heard from missouris republican governor mike parson. This is what he had to say this week about students returning to school in the fall. These kids have got to get back to school. Theyre at the lowest risk possible. If they do get covid19, which they will and they will when they go to school, theyre not going to the hospitals. Theyre not going to have to sit in doctors offices. Theyre going to go home and theyre going to get over it. I mean, just to repeat it, the governor said kids who get it, he said they will get it, theyre not going to have to sit in doctors office, theyre not going to hospitals. Theyre going to go home and theyre going to get over it. Whats your reaction to that . Well, i mean, in general, children who get infected, as we know from the statistics, clearly for the most part do very well and dont get seriously ill if you look at the rate of hospitalizations, its much, much lower with children. But there are exceptions to that. And i think we have to be realistic to realize that children who get infected for the most part dont get seriously ill but some do and some do pass it on to the adults. So i think we have to be careful when we talk about that. Finally, sir, i know youre a huge nationals fan. Ive seen you wearing nationals mask adherings. Youre going to throw out the first pitch when the nationals faceoff against the yankees thursday. Obviously thats quite an honor. How are you going to do it . A way that conveys that were not going back to normal, that this is baseball during a time of a pandemic . Well, jake, i think the atmosphere in which its going to be occurring is going to be very clear. There is not going to be people in the stands. Its just going to be televised. So i think that in and of itself tells you something about the stark difference between what were doing right now and what we are able to do last year at this time. All right. I hope youve practiced. That plate is a lot farther than you think it is. [ laughter ] yeah. I used to play baseball as a young boy and as a kid in school. I hope i dont bounce it too much. [ laughter ] well, if you, do youll be forgiven. I know youve been busy. Dr. Anthony fauci, thanks so much for being so generous with your time and expertise today. We appreciate it. Thank you for having me, jake. The cdc today says that the number of people infected in this country could be up to 24 times whats been reported. Our dr. Sanjay guptas going to join me to discuss that and more next. Plus, Senate Republicans trying to put together a new 1 trillion stimulus deal. But theres just one big problem and its not democrats. Staying with our health lead, new data from the cdc shows that the number of americans who have had covid19 is much higher than the official case count in some areas. Six to 24 times higher. Right now there are almost 4 million confirmed cases in the United States. This means that actual number could be tens of millions more. And as cnns nick watt reports for us now from california, that scary possibility comes as some areas are starting to return to stayathome orders. Reporter down on the border of one texas county, this county just ordered everyone to stay home again after 34 deaths in just 24 hours. We are a hot spot in a hot spot of a hot spot. The United States is a hot spot. Texas is a hot spot and were the hot spot of texas. Reporter in florida, 54 hospitals in 27 counties are now completely out of icu beds. Miami is closing all city summer camps after several kids tested positive. So, schools . The biggest determinant of whether or not we can go back to school actually has little to nothing to do with the actual schools. Its your background transmission rate. Reporter florida is ordering all schools open brick and mortar in just a few weeks. A Teachers Group is suing. The startling statistic that you all need to know is that we have 23,000 children that have been tested positive for covid19 in the state of florida with a 13. 4 positivity rate. We must keep kids alive. We must keep them healthy and we must keep them safe. Reporter meanwhile, still long lines for tests in too many places, one leading lab says some results are taking up to two weeks. Weve never had enough testing. The federal testing is way too slow. Thats why we had to get rid of it. Reporter but there are some early signs that what the American People are doing masks, et cetera is helping. First time in a week, the u. S. Just dropped below 60,000 new cases in a day. But its all relative. Hundreds are still dying every day and its regional. Idaho largely spared in the spring, climbing alarmingly midsummer. Today or tomorrow, california will probably surpass new york as the state with the most confirmed cases. We have to minimize our mixing. We have to minimize the transmission of this disease. Be as vigilant as possible to work through the next few critical weeks. Reporter and nationwide, probably for many months to come. Were still at the beginning of this pandemic. Thats what i find so difficult. Most people are already done with it. Theyre over, theyve decided they are not going to do anymore. Well, they dont get to choose. The virus chooses. Reporter now, today, jake, a Congressional Committee heard from the bosses of some of those companies racing to produce a vaccine. We heard some optimism, one person from astrazeneca said we could see a vaccine any time from september onwards. Also some pretty hard to hear realism. Somebody from merck said that this will not be the last or the worst pandemic that we will face. Jake . Okay. A little optimism followed by something else. Nick watt, thank you so much. Appreciate it. I want to bring in cnns chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. Sanjay, we just heard from the nations top Infectious Disease expert, dr. Anthony fauci in the previous block. He described testing in the u. S. As patchy and not as uniform as he would like. He avoided saying so and i understand why. He has a job and he feels that he needs to stay in that job. And i think a lot of people want him to. But what will it take to improve the number of tests, the lag in testing, and the lack of Contact Tracing . Well, you know, i think theres a fundamental problem here, which is that there is just so much widespread virus in this country because we ignored it for so long. Its very hard to catch up with testing. On one hand you can say were doing more testing than any other country in the world. Second thing youd have to say is we need to do that much testing. And were still of catching only maybe 10 of the infections out there. A lot of people are spreading having no idea that they actually have it. Thats because of the lack of the testing and you cant even start to talk about Contact Tracing until you can bring the numbers down. The numbers are just too high. Weve got to bring down the viral load. If people wore masks and did all these physical distancing measures since weve been talking about since march, the numbers would come down. And i think you would be able to get your hands around testing. Dr. Fauci said today masks, physical distancing, dont go inside to events unless you need to. Wash your hands many times a day. So, there are not going to be any medical experts at the White House Briefing today. Were not even sure if its going to be a briefing, but President Trump is holding some sort of event. Is it a mistake to not invite dr. Fauci and other Health Experts to be there . Its a complete mistake, jake. I got calls today from sources and colleagues from around the world, as i touch base with them regularly. They reach out to dr. Fauci. They reach out to members of the Coronavirus Task force for their own guidance it. Seems to me at times were not reaching out within the United States to the people who are part of our own task force. Its a total mistake. Two big things. One is that it would be nice to hear about a path forward now from people like dr. Fauci and ambassador birx. Unfortunately as we well know, a lot of things that are said by the president are wrong. You need someone to factcheck these things because sometimes they can be dangerous some of the stuff that hes saying. These things need to be factchecked realtime. And it worries me that these scientists wont be there to do that. Yeah. It was a couple months ago, or it was in april 26th or Something Like that when President Trump mused publicly about ingesting disinfectants. Sanjay, today, representatives from the top drugmakers working on a covid19 vaccine, nick watts talked about them. Astrazeneca, moderna, pfizer, johnson johnson, they spoke before the commerce committee. There was concern express that President Trump might pressure these companies to release a vaccine before the vaccine is ready for election reasons. Take a listen. Are your c insulted by an accusation that you could bring a drug to market thats not safe or effective . Is that insulting . Despite the speed that were working at, were not cutting corners and regulators are not lowering their standards. We stand by science and we will continue to develop a safe and effective product as we always have. So, again, dr. Fauci just said that you shouldnt wait. When the vaccines ready you should take it because that means that if its been approved its okay. What do you say to sceptics and some of them are democrats on capitol hill, who are worried that President Trump is pushing a vaccine to be issued before its ready. And it might not be safe and he wants to do this to help his own reelection chances. What would you say to that . Well, i think what you heard the pharm exec say isnt surprising. I do believe that because this exists within a regulatory framework. This doesnt just get made by the companies and then potentially start getting dosed in people outside of a trial. The fda is really the organization that has to vet that data, make sure that it actually proves that it is safe, that its effective. Thats going to be the real challenge in some ways. So, the idea that the fda has to be completely independent, you know, not at all succumbing to any kind of political pressure i think is the absolute key, even more so than the pharm execs. All right. Lets hope youre right, dr. Sanjay gupta, thank you so much. Coming up next, Congressional Republicans are negotiating a major stimulus bill. But so far they havent gotten President Trump on board. What are the sticking points . Thats next. burke at farmers, we know how nice it is to save on your auto policy. In our politics lead today, Senate Republicans are hoping to unveil a new economic stimulus deal this week. Their biggest obstacle so far has not been negotiating with senate democrats. Rather, its been President Trump. Top white house officials met with republicans on capitol hill today to try to iron out some of the issues. All signs point to major divisions on more funding more the cdc and money to increase coronavirus testing and Contact Tracing. Which Senate Republicans want. And the white house inexplicably does not. Cnn kong Congressional Correspondent Phil Mattingly is with us. Reporter when i asked the white house chief of staff how far he wanted to get, he just said lets move the ball down the field theyre not trying to get to the other side of the field or even to the inzone at this point. Theyre trying to just unify the Republican Party here in the United States senate. There was the closed door meeting where the treasury secretary white house chief of staff basically sat in and listened. More than a dozen republicans registered concerns about where the white house stood and concerns about the stimulus proposal in general. Some republicans very clear that they are not on board with anything to the size and scope of where Mitch Mcconnell the Senate Majority leader wants things to be. Thats a trillion dollars. Keep in mind they havent started negotiating with democrats yet. Right now mnuchin and meadows are inside speaker pelosis office, but thats not for negotiations. Thats just to set the framework for things. I think the best way to put this as one senator told me earlier today is, a, we have a lot of work to do, and, b, we have a lot of guys who want to get a lot of things off thifr chest. Its part of the process but its an urgency here. The unemployment benefits, the federal enhancement expires at the end of the month. They want a deal before then. But theres a lot more steps to go on this. A lot of people dont know how theyre going to pay their rent next month. Phil, Republican Leaders said today theyre considering another round of direct paychecks to americans in this bill. Is that right . Thats exactly right. And i think Mitch Mcconnell has made clear thats something he wants in the bill. I think one of the interesting elements here is President Trump has made clear he wants a payroll tax cut. That is a priority for him. They prefer the direct payments. They understand that they are quick, they went out fast, they were effective for millions of americans and they want them in the bill. One thing they have not settled on is the scope of those payments. The initial payments, 1,200 for individuals, up to 2,400 for families. Well see where they end up on that. But right now republicans definitely planning to have some form of stimulus checks in their proposal, jake. All right, Phil Mattingly, thank you so much. One county has now issued a new stayathome order, but it cannot be enforced. Well explain why. Thats next. The National Lead now, california may have the most new coronavirus cases on a daily basis nationwide right now. But two other states lead by far when it comes to the number of deaths per day. Those states are texas and florida. Ed, hidalgo county, which is along the mexican border, officials there tried to order residents to stay home. But apparently Governor Abbott wont let the county enforce that rule. Why is that . Reporter well, this has been a struggle thats been going on between the governor and local officials since april. And it essentially hidalgo county, as one doctor put it to me yesterday, this is the hot spot within this texas hot spot. And the governors essentially saying that local jurisdictions just dont have the authority and the enforcement mechanism to carry out these kinds of orders. The Governors Office is saying that local authorities need to enforce the provisions that are already in place like the mask mandate. But this comes as it has to various other county and city leaders across the state over the last few months is very frustrating as they see these numbers increasing in their local communities as we have seen so closely down there in the rio grande valley, which is of great concern as hospital bed space has been running out dramatically. And, ed, were also learning of an explosion of cases in texas prisons. How bad is the situation there . Reporter well, we just heard a short while ago about a federal prison in fort worth where more than 500 female inmates have tested positive with covid. Thats nearly 40 of that one particular prisons population. The federal bureau of prisons is saying that they started increasing testing at the site back in early july. That continues. But this also comes, as weve seen, a number of similar type stories of these explosion of cases at various prison and jail facilities across the country since this pandemic started. All right, thank you so much. In public, President Trump portrays himself as tough on china. But it seems his companys private business deals tell a different story. Coming up next, the new cnn investigation. Stay with us. Okay, give it a try. Between wisdom and curiosity, theres a bridge. Between ideas and inspiration, trauma and treatment. Gained a couple of more pounds. Thats good for the babies. Between the moments that make us who we are, and keeping them safe, private and secure, theres webex. Beautiful. In our money lead today, as the trade war with china grinds on, President Trump has not been shy about publicly bashing china on the issue of trade. And also recently on the coronavirus. Hes also been quite critical of americans getting goods from china. But remember the president is also a businessman. So given how trump talks, how has the Trump Organization been walking . Cnns kylie atwood joins us now. Shes been investigating the matter for us. How has the Trump Organization been in accordance with the president s rhetoric and the white houses advance to americans when it comes to buying american and not buying from china . Reporter no, jake. Our review demonstrates that they have not been in accordance with what the president has said and what the stated goals of the Trump Administration are. So, since september of last year, the property ises owned by the Trump Organization have imported more than eight tons of goods from china. And that comes as the president has increasingly cast himself as tough on china, particularly in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, slamming them for how they have handled that pandemic. And of course as he has cast himself as someone whose trade negotiations with china are going to benefit everyday americans, american manufacturers. So, i want to point out the instances of these imports from china. Just two months ago there was an import of two tons of goods that came to trump golf course in l. A. From shanghai. That was two tons of wooden showcase cabinets coming into that golf course. And in september of last year, there was a shipment of more than six tons of tables from china to the Trump International hotel in new york city. And its important to note that on that same day, jake, that same day that that shipment of six tons of tables from china came to the Trump Organizations international hotel, the president was tweeting. He was tweeting about his trade negotiations with china, saying, quote, that they are doing much tougher in those negotiations. And he also said that they are going to get much tougher on china if he wins. So demonstrating that he wants this to be a part of his president ial campaign, committing to being tougher on china if he wins the president ial election. Now we should note that he did sign phase one of that trade deal earlier this year. But he has come out and publicly said hes not interested in signing phase two of a trade deal with china. And there are concerns about if china would be even able to uphold the commitments it made in the phase one trade deal. And the other thing that i think is important to note, jake, is that in 2017, the president signed an executive order compelling all federal agencies to buy american. That is clearly not something that has trickled down to the companies, even those that are owned by his own sons. Its, i guess, not surprising that hes hypocritical on this issue. I remember five years ago with my first interview with him, i wore a trump tie to the interview just to point out to him that that tie was made in china. And i pleaded with him why dont you produce these ties in, say, philadelphia . They could use the jobs there. And its cheaper, right . I mean, thats the reason that the Trump Organization is buying goods from china. Theyre cheaper than if they bought those goods from the United States. Yeah. Youre right. Thats something that he has publicly talked about before. But as he has become president , it has been a stated goal of his to try and draw manufacturing jobs back to the United States. I should note that the Trump Organization didnt reply to any of our requests for comment even when we asked them if they have a commitment to buying from companies that maf p manufacture here in the United States. Jake . Yeah. To help american jobs. Kylie atwood, great investigating. More than 141,000 americans have died because of the coronavirus. We want to ethat the time to remember three of them right now.
