Barbara boxer discusses her book the art of tough fearlessly facing politics and life which looks at her life and career in politics. She is interviewed by senator Amy Klobuchar from minnesota. Host barbara boxer, what an honor to be with you, one of my mentors in the senate, someone who came into the senate when there was barely a woman to be seen, you were there and this book you have written, the art of tough fearlessly facing politics and life, really told the story of how you got there. Barbara leavy of the times, born on november 11, 1940, from a family of jewish refugees, in your own words, growing up in the pervasive shadow of the holocaust somehow ends up going from that little place in brooklyn to the United States senate, maybe moved to california in between. You did it all with such grace but also with that part of tough. What was that like growing up with your family and how you decided to take this journey . Guest senator barbara boxer, my colleague, you said it was an honor to interview me. I am so excited that you agreed to do this because it says a lot about our relationship and i am so thrilled, i will get to your question in a second, but the fact is the one relationship that developed, women senators and a lot of men, means so much to me. You know i am not running again and people say why, are you disgusted with the place . Not at all. I just feel after 40 years, people like you can carry the banner. Our colleagues in new york, we have you interviewing me. I couldnt be more thrilled. To the issue of how did i get tough . What was my life like when i was a child . In this memoir, when i sat down to write, so long ago, three years to put it together, a lot of effort, when i first thought about it, i thought it will be my dad who had all the influence on who i am as a person. My dad was my idol, the youngest of tween 9 brothers and sisters. None of them graduated from high school. My dad was born in 1908 and after he married my mom he goes to city college of new york at night. At night. That is great to get his cpa. After i am born in 1950 he goes to law school at night, gets his degree. I am thinking clearly it was my dad. I sat down to think about the lesson. We all come from my mother. He didnt graduate from high school. Did not. It was such a burden on her. She felt so sad about it. At one point she tried to get i dont know what happened, but i will say this. The kind of smart she had, smart from the heart and soul. In the beginning of the book i lay out the rules, how can you do it . One of the things, always doing the right thing even when everything is going against you. You and i know it, we have had experience whether it is on human trafficking, toxic chemicals that i took the leadership on. We know what it is like if people look at you and say why are you causing these problems . If you know it is right you better do the right thing and i learned never act out of anger. You can feel the anger but dont act on anger. You tell a funny story how you were a little angry, and watching you the next day walk by his apartment, and seeing a dark cloth across the house and you think you killed him. Turned out to be the grandfather. I am sure it is one of those memories you dont forget. Guest it is a memory i dont forget. Albert was my nemesis. I am still little, 5 foot 3. Maybe with my high heels. Host that is what i am thinking. Guest i was the perfect target. He would insult me and chase me. That is what we did in those days. May be they still do in school. One day i had had it. No one was around. I took out my number 2 pencil and stabbed him in the arm. He is stunned and i am stunned at what i did. Exactly right in telling the story, we thought we would keep it our little secret. But he didnt come to school for the next three days. There is a great spot over his home which i passed by every day, on a vacant lot on the way home. I lived in the innercity and i really did think i killed him. I took it to my mother who i took everything to. I think i killed albert. She called me barbara sue, what did you do . I told her i cant believe you would ever do that. I dont think you killed him. Let me call the principal. He found out his grandpa died. I was so relieved i hugged him when he came back but it taught me an amazing lesson and she said never use violence. You have to persuade. I never did after that use violence. I tried to defuse a lot of situations. Sometimes i won. As a young girl you think about this at a time when girls are organizing a lot of things you led the effort to get a new carpet in the apartment lobby. One of my favorite letters. My mother was in the hospital with some illness and you are not allowed to visit and the first organizing effort there is pretty good. My mother died and my dad died. And i am the daughter and would love to see my mother very much. And five minutes before i went to school, no sickness, a little bellyache now and then, i wont make a lot of noise, i miss my mother very much so why cant i see her . Thanks for reading this letter. Sincerely yours, barbara leavy. I had a feeling it wouldnt work. I wrote back to my mother, dear mom, how mean can a person be . If they dont let me in, they really arent mean. I will be so happy. In school, i am in the mexican group, study group on mexican culture and art. In fact i am the chairman. I got so choked up. Because memories you and i have of our families, so deep inside. Host this whole idea that anyone can make it in america which we still believe today, no matter where you came from is a big part of your story but one thing that is different about your story and people we see in the senate is you are a girl. Here you are, you go to brooklyn college, following in your dads footsteps, get a degree and want to become a stockbroker, you start interviewing around for jobs and it wasnt easy back then to get that job. Guest in those days you could have a program in the wall street firm and the people who were selling the security, stockbrokers, customers, that was the name, customers men. I wanted to be a customers man. I was ready to do it. When i got my first job, it is a long story, wont go through too much but assistant to a woman who wrote in the Municipal Bond newsletters was so smart but never signed it by her name. She cited ee cook. I said why dont you sign . No one will buy it because it was sold. She never became a partner for many years and she was in disguise. It was unreal. I thought i am going to take a different path. Im going to work for her, get a salary, i was the only one working, i paid 90 and said i have to make more to live a decent life so i studied, couldnt get into the program. If you got into the customers program you got trained, it was like studying for an exam. I did it on my own and passed. I was so excited i took it to elizabeth and she said i dont know. Sorry, women dont the shocking thing was not only that he just said it as a fact of life, i took it i said marco, okay. I did quit. I went to another firm where they allowed me quietly to have a little business on the side where i was kind of the assistant to the Vice President , had a little Side Business so i was able to make 250 a week. Host sometimes in politics some of us who came in on your shoulders, your 5 foot shoulders, Barbara Mikulski says it was so much harder when you came in. For a young person to read your story and understand what you went through, when most women were expected to have a job, that was a teacher, nurse, that was it. Your husband who you have been married to in my mind forever. You say this is one of my favorite quotes in the book, i often joke that sue married Debbie Reynolds and woke up with sonja soto mayor. Guest when we met, girls, young women didnt have the opportunities we now have today and that our daughters have today. We had to settle for a lot less. When sue met me i was pursuing my dream as an economics major. He saw signs in those years, you get together for little parties, they would be talking about issues of the day and the women so as not to be perceived as too uppity would be talking about, seriously, more appropriate things for women. I would do my thing with the women and go to the men, talk to them too which was considered a bit odd, but i did it, so he knew some things i wouldnt stay a cheerleader that i was. But lets be clear. When he met me, i was a kid. I was 18. Going to the senate you might as well say flying to the moon by yourself with your arms waving. Host the decision was monumental in your career, the history of america, you decide to move to california. How did that come about . Guest my sister and her family moved there. So such a good student, made the law review and went with my parents and drove to california. I got to california, my eyes open up, i had never seen anything as beautiful as this. I grew up in brooklyn which by the way, the coolest place to live. I talk about a movie, a book call the tree grows in brooklyn. Some beautiful places in Prospect Park and botanical gardens, when i came kind of history there. First thing you learn about california, the various ecology from north of the state to south. The ocean, we have the richest farmland so exquisite but i was 21 or so, and i said to him he saidwhat . I said you see it is gorgeous and you will love it. So much more freedom to be outside and outdoors. I have to get a job, so he did. He got a job two years in advance. Came to california, doing what i wanted to tell you. And the excitement in silicon valley. Everything about it was so incredible. Doug, your first child, is born two months ago. And he has an exam. Of 50 50 chance of survival. Guest no insurance. Host that got you somewhat interested in getting involved in politics. Guest understanding what it means, that never forget it, you never forget it. Nothing is going to go wrong. Everything is going to go great. And we had agreed to move. I said i will go get us a place to live and in california, i was good about it. And on may 21, 1965. All of a sudden the water breaks and i had not met my doctor and in the clinic in mount sinai hospital, so wonderful to me i have never forgotten them. I had nothing. They said you know, it is going to cost 1000 a day. You can imagine what it is, we dont know how long they have to stay. I am thinking this is the end, all we cared about was dust. Every day it goes up 10 . And that is the most wonderful, and take care of me and has his own second job. And wasnt had insurance. And that was a lesson how you dont have anything. And womens healthcare. Very traditional in the shadow of the holocaust. And in northern california, in the shadow of the vietnam war. And you learn the heart, and the carpet lobby in the apartment. And taking them out, the ultimate decision becoming supervisor. And going into politics. By that time i had two little kids. You start to think differently, start to think longterm. What kind of world, as the sun going to face . All these issues before the vietnam war, the womens movement, it was the first war that came into the living room. And part of the antiwar movement, and parade and all the rest of it. I became a real activist. When a seat opened up, in california, the issues, all the issues, and the environment and womens rights. They said i said why dont you do it . Why dont you do it . It was so crazy. A nonpartisan office, dont run as a democrat or republican. When i came out on top, the incumbent, was running. The issue they tried to use, the antichoice issue. And i was kind of excited. My campaign was going strong, going in the door, he looks as close as we are and i have been giving this a lot of thought. And it has been hard for her. I want to see you right now. You should drop out. You are going to be bad for women. You know the oppressor has to free the oppressed. I remember or only white have to free, and against racism. And employed the art of the top issues, when someone has gone over the line, this meeting is over. Soon i got up and he got up and shut the door, and i said actually slammed the door, he got revenge because he was so mad at me he was third, came out last. And by a small vote. When you were running, how can you do this with four kids . I have two kids. The rumors were so strong, here you are, leaving kids at home. What was your story about the dishes . Great stories in this book. The book goes into what it was like to be a woman, if not, you would cry yourself to sleep. I would knock on the door because i went doortodoor. It was a small election, you need a 20,000 votes to win. First thing that happened to someone opened the door, i didnt think you would be so small. What did they expect . They expected a big person because men i didnt expect you to be so short. I am. And this one woman, i could never vote for you. You have four kids you are abandoning. I said i have two kids. She said no you dont she got into an argument. You never forget giving birth, i did it twice and i walked away. What are you going to do . I was at another meeting, things were going great and i was telling the group i had to preserve the environment, everyone nodding and wonderful, very suburban part of my district. I thought i am making it, i am hitting it. A hand goes up in the back and this woman says how do you have time to do your dishes . Even then i was taken aback. Hat i just said i use paper plates, which was stupid because this was an environmental group, so you couldnt win. I thought it was a joke. I use paper plates. It was so hard. Host the questions you were getting very few these days but not many of them. Very hard. Guest i lost that race. They werent ready for me. The only reason i stayed after that i had a great i did a little radio. I stuck with it because i read an article in this magazine. The article, i write about it, the article says women take things personally. Men one time, two times, three times, four times, women if they lose the first time they think they hate me because we are a little more sensitive and i thought this is a horrible experience. But i am not going to take it personally. There i was out on a lot of issues that were a little ahead of my time. You married ahead of your time. Guest it continues, you have to say to your self get people to vote for you because they know you are innocent, you are one of the most populous, one of the most popular politicians in the country. The reason is even when people disagree, you are in it for the right reasons, you are trying truly to find a sweet spot with legislation, working hard with a sense of humor and you are not afraid. People will vote for you from the other party when they never vote for a democrat. This is what i try to show because believe it or not, 16 to 17 of the republicans, i would never would have won my races and if you ask them, they will say i dont agree with her sometimes but she tells me where she is coming from and is in it for the right reasons. Host we will get back to that but for me one of the things people might not know until reading your book or talk to you, it is called the art of tough fearlessly facing politics and life. Part of the reason, one thing i know is you stand your ground on many issues and everyone knows that but i dont know if everyone knows about the times you try to find Common Ground like on the transportation bill recently with mitch mcconnell. You worked with senator in half on the transportation bill, you got the water bill and a number of things you were able to do by taking a bunch of democrats and republicans out together for dinner. Part of it, we get back to your running and say you start to learn the people you work with and you did that. Mentors to you, because you had proven your self through the art of tough fearlessly facing politics and life, when congressman burton said he was going into rehab and wanted you to run for his seat you must have been floored. How did you react . Guest this was in the 80s. Age was beginning to do something. John burton, one of my mentors, i worked for him in congress and he helps me my whole career, went to congress and i went to the board of supervisors, out of the blue he called me, addicted to drugs and alcohol, checking into a Rehab Facility in arizona and running for a seat, oh my god, my kids were in high school, a little too young. But i took it up with them and said mom, these opportunities dont come along very often so i went for it and i got there. I got there. I got to the house, served in the house for ten years. Could have stayed there but they were pushing me out. Host people often focus on women mentors which of course you had both, Barbara Mikulski, you had these women colleagues that were incredible. And i love when you tell the story about nancy pelosi and Diane Feinstein in your book, but you also had male mentors that helps you. Look at the stories of really the person that calls you whos in trouble, horrible time in his life, that he picks a woman to run for his seat. Guest well, he did and he knew that my politics were progressive. He knew he knew i was kind of fearless. Immediate top me to be fearless and he wanted me there. But what was funny was his brother was the real kingmaker, his brother then called which was the biggest call because john said i hope you will run. I was shaking because philip was so powerful in california at thp time. I said hi, phil, how are you . Sas he said i think you ought to run for john c. Im so honored. He said dont you so honored. Talk about coming down. Steel to put up with it because he wasnt sure at all that i could do it. And he pledged, i set a just a little worried about the money. Most libraries so far is 40,000 had to raise 250,000 for the congressional bid, what it would cost now, and he said i dont want you to worry about it because that im going to do. Im on cloud nine and then we decide were going to go for it. Been phil its challenge in a very serious way by a state senator and phil can do one thing because he is busy preserving and protecting which i totally got. And there i am, talk about baptism by fire. We were able to win that seat but it was hard. Most of the races have been hard. Host so you get to the house of representatives, not that many women back then. Its an exciting time and you start working on an number of issues, some of which landed in your lap like aids research. Other shoe pursue at one of the things i didnt know about you was your one of the first people taking on excessive cost with government contracting. Unit is 7600 coffeepot, so this is military contracting. There was a bracket that was 1000 you were a similar cheaply as a necklace. Guest it costs i dont know hundreds of thousands that shouldve been 75 cents. This is a bracket. Just started on and screwed in and this issue came to me from the terrific staff, we dont get enough thanks to let me say to everybody, if you dont run yourself, you help somebody else, its worth it. This is a scandal. Theres a group called project on military procurement reform, and i thought, i can do one in to work, kids, i had no expectation. There were already people there. You know issues are taken. In the house in particular, 435, you have to find in each. So aides sunday because of my tragic situation in my district. This one was brought to me by this group and my staff is that no one is really talking about this. They are talking about missiles. People cant picture what a missile should cost, or a carrier should cause. You get into the billions your eyes glaze over, but how about a 600 toilet seat, which is what the pentagon was penny for one reason. They were not contracting out to small business. They were sent to like ebay, you do the thing, and that was the reason. Rewrote a bill and its the law and its a billions of dollars. Host you are doing well guess that technically one great story which is hilarious which a detailed . I was proud of the work on military procurement reform, so i have a council meeting. I will never forget this, out doors and a toaster of procurement reform. And i said could you imagine a 600 toilet seat . Wanwatcom isnt made of gold . Does anybody have questioned . A woman raises her hand, this was the rich part of my district, and she said do you know where i can get one of those . [laughter] time theres a reason Julie Louis Dreyfus and lily, has endorsed her book. People forget about the humor things that happen in politics a special and theres all this negativity. Its important because you what young woman and young men to run for office. Thats the cool part about your book just make you have a great sense of humor and thats why youre effected. Effected. People wonder, but really need someone with a sense of humor and are a person who wants to write like i did with the fact is thats part of the art the art of tough, to the sense or humor. It enables you to survive. Host one of the things is you talk about how the women didnt have a gym or there was this big deal, so unfair to try to get women to have access to a gym as well. You took this on. Tip oneill may have been the leader at the time. You take is on and yo you in yor way because you a beautiful singing voice and a documented many of the songs in this book, and she wrote a song about the women needing a gym. Do you want try to what youre asking . Host could you sing it for as . He dont have to run for officer again thank you i will sing one verse and ill read the rest. To set the stage what happened was, i came from california with the exercise that that was really important, advocated and i find out theres only one gym, no, there was a gym for women. It was about the size of the stable, and you can do anything there. All i had was a bunch ofdn hairdryers. Dont ask me why, you know, and i called, i had a staffer who said i want to leave the women members in exercises. So mogul skiing was my colleague, you know funny she is, and Geraldine Ferraro and was about to make history and a few others, Olympia Snowe was there trembling a story of barbara who did exercise in the gym just that we have this wonderful reading in this tiny little gem where, trusted, there were seven us in the room. You could name spread your arms out because the hairdryers got in the way. So claudette was leading us at major hand in the air. Up, down. Raised her hand to the side. Everyone kind of does it. Now put your hands on your hip come and barbara yells if i could find my hips i wouldnt be here. So things got desperate. W a few of us went to the maneuver in charge of the gym and said could we use this gem . Absolutely not. Its not fair. No, cannot. Can we expand the womens gym . You cannot. It was just a horriblee wome experience. I used the art of tough. T. I said okay, im going to use my sense of humor. I went to colleagues, marcyntedt kaptur and mary from ohio, and i said can you guys carry a 10 . Yes, we can carry the team. I wrote this song, it was suggested by my colleagues that i sing it to the leadership of the democratic caucus. Sh oh, my god, we walked in there. We had a guitarist accompanying us, so we like this. Exercised, glamorize, where to go will you advise . Cant everybody use your gym . And then it went on, equal rights we will wear tights, lets avoid those macho fights. Cant everybody hoosier gym . And then we ended with we are not trim, we are not slim, cant we make it hers in him . Cant everybody hoosier gym . We are only asking, and we and the big finish and we get into gym. Is the only time, i have to admit, because youre my dusty, ive changed policy with my lyrics. But we did it. Host its an example of using, this is not just a senate gym. Or the house of gym. You are taking on an issue thats happening all over america with whether people could use locker rooms or the High School Girls to have access to sports. Lets take a night to a different level, something much, much more series which is my favorite photo in this book and its the picture of you leaving and, of course, Patricia Schroeder as well but you areed the first one of course leading the women up the stairs whilet youre running for senate i think, the seat opened up in california. Claims, since going on. The anita hill stuff starts coming up about the Supreme Court nominee clarence thomas, and you the house women decide that hearing needs to be opened again. Theres this photo of your leading the women at the stairs of the senate. Guess that ill tell you something. When i look at that photo i look at all of us and they see uptight. I see a focus, determination. The photo captured the moment, and some photos do. You think back to iconic photographs. For me this was a symbol of equality. We were going over there to see look, you have a professor who, shes intelligent, shes flawless in her history, and she is saying that, in fact, she was sexually harassed by the nominee to the Supreme Court. And the guys in the senate, and let me be clear, there wasnt one woman on the judiciary committee, and just for fun, you know. Host there is still only two of us now just make ridiculous. They would open up the hearing. They would not. Now, the reasons for it i explain in the book. Th i dont want to go into that sort is going to to talk about what it felt like for us than what you are demanding a meeting with George Mitchell, right . Guest he said theres only one way to get a meeting. Weve got to walk over there. Even though i was running one fact his leadership was on this. We walk over, about seven of us, the rest of the women, theresof been an asset doing one doing one man on the floor to talk about it and we are walking ovea there. We get up to the top of the steps and we knock on the door, because all of, its lunchtime and you know, when they have those lunches, those conference lunches, we are into. Its all the democratic senators. All men except for Barbara Mikulski. Actually she wasnt there i b dont think. Yeah, she was there, the only one. In the democratic caucus. We knocked on the door. They peek out. Women. Oman. High . High, we see. We are seven when from the house, Democratic Women and we want to come in and speak with the senators. And that the minimum with mitchell. Oh, no, he said. We said why . He says, we dont but strangers in the senate. Now, i wrote another book called strangers in this in a long time ago because that, we said what he talking about . We are not strangers. We are in the women of the house. At because we have well over 100 years of experience. We just want to talk to the senators about reopening. Dont take offense, she said. Thats just a term of art. In yemen was not a senator is called a stranger. s i had never heard of that. The that as it may thats what she said. So i reached to the back of my mind. I employed the art of tough. How are they going to get a meeting . So i said, you know, thats well and good but if we have to turn back and walked down the stairs now, theres a bank of cameras down there and were going to tell them that we were able to see anybody. She said, just a minute. She says okay, go in the side room and George Mitchell will meet with you. We told them, you have to open up the hearings, and to give. But the hearings were disastrour as explained in the book, i wont go into it, theres been a whole movie by hbo about it. But i want to say unequivocally to you and anyone within the sound of our voices, that without anita sills courage iwi never would never ever wouldve gotten to the senate because when california there were twowo seats open. Diane was way ahead because she was much more known and should run for governor before. Wonderful mayor. I had this tiny district and i was considered more progressive. That it was a tougher run because then, really the state was more purple. Now its blue, thank you, but it was quite purple reddish. Host the hearings put the attention on the fact that when the women. What i love about the story is that diane was in a stronger position to run both seats and these guys are, thank you, this is impossible, cant have two jewish women running at the same time, and diane while youre still in your primary, she campaigns with you and she says, her famous line, 2 guest may be good for the content of milk but its not good enough to 2 of the senate and women. We need more. And then when i would get the question, are you serious . You think two jewish women no state had ever had to women, number one. And ive never given be a Jewish Center for my stay as far as i know. I have to go back but i dont think so. I cant write off the top of my head believe it. So they said how do you ever expect two jewish women to win . And we say, you never raised the issue about two protestant men being elected . R rais why is this an issue . Ei besides, the senate could use a good dose of chicken soup. We tried to use our sense of humor, both of us. We stuck together on the campaign trail and the message was so powerful, given the juxtaposition of anita hill not getting justice in many womens eyes, okay . And no women on the judiciary committee. Then they look at the senate how it was 98 men. So we got elected. Patty murray got elected. We tripled our numbers. They called the year of the woman. I dont know what theyre so excited about. Just going to six. Then it started to go and now were up to 20 of the senatend and hopefully after this election we will be far more than what i remember Barbara Mikulski sing to you at the time, you are giving up, you are giving up a state house seat for a very uncertain election. She said go for it. She told you, a lot of women may be looking out the window for prince charlie. Im looking for more women senators. Guest dont you love her . What else did she say . Its not about gender. Its about an agenda. She would say its not about macroeconomics. Its about macaroni and cheese economics. T she has a way about her from having mentors was good but it was not easy. It was the house banking scandal and should nothing to do with it. But there was som some investign ever been number that had their money there. Igof they were to use that against you. At one point you decided i dont even know if i want to keep running. The great family stories that you i will tell it quickly. The house bank scandal, to make it brief, this is what it was. The house bank was about a bank. It didnt operate like a bank. Ba in other words, when you put your check in, mine was automatic, it took them days before the credit it. I did know that the they never told us that. I would write a check, pay for my mothers medicine whatever i was doing, and then two weeks later the king was fun. But they never told you about it. R so when this scandal hit, they said all these people bounced checks. It was so embarrassing and they put the fbi on the case. Oh, my god. You have to meet with the fbi. The fbi, i thought to myself whe are they sitting there with me when they could be going after criminals . The bottom line is i was cleared completely but even though i was cleared completely, they were running just horrible ads,ey bouncing all over the screen. It was the press, show me your checkbook. Re i said im not showing you my checkbook. Its none of your business what has been at the dry cleaners. That in for your aided the press. They would meeting at the airport with cameras. Barbara boxer will not show us your checkbook. Thats right. Anyway, it was a total nightmare so i gave the. I thought im sick of this. I dont need this. I could go back to being a reporter, go have a tv show, blah, blah, blah. W and i called and said this is it. Im not going to do this senate race. And i thought he would be happy because he always we support you as a constituent but we miss you, you know . Instead of saying all, im happy. He said that talk about when you get over i said theres nothing to talk about. And on the way home i stopped off at a party. They were watching 60 minutes and they showed me in my happier moments. Now i welcome. He is upstairs watching a baseball game and he has two kids who are now young adults. They are waiting for me. Laying awake for me. E whether doing your . They were working, and they said mom, you cant trot out. This is so stupid. I hate to tell the. Sounds like it is made up. I said why not . Im so sick of this. I have done some dignity. They said were going to reach a book that you always read us, all, the places you go. Its a dr. Seuss thing and i thought this cant be happening. These two adults are reading sometimes youre up and sometimes youre down. Tears are coming into my eyes and my daughter, they both say, you just cant do this. Who cares if you lose . When she looks at me and she says mom, she said, what is that message going to be to all the women who are counting on you are counting on you. Youre just going to walk away . The art of tough let me for a moment. I guess they have it. They give it back at me and i stayed in the race and i win the race. The but a lot in the primary, and then have a tough race in the general and pull it off. Anyway, its one of the most im so glad. Net in a lot of ways this book is a apartment book its a book to a plan to say he dont give a. Dont do that. Dont succumb to that, why dont you talk about some of the battles in the senate you have had . You were somehow, not Everyone Wants the assignment of the Ethics Committee where you are policing your fellow senators. You had to do with the packwood case. Harassment, taken on Climate Change. Youve been at the forefront of many battles guess that the senate was amazing when i goton there because i told, i told my constituents, i said this good dissent that is about the senate. I said, the bad news is jesse helms who was always a negative force from my point of view, he can shut the senate down. The good news is so can i. So when i got there i realized i had the power to utilize this ability to shut the senate down come to make a compromise to i could do that even just as a freshman. Om heres what happened. When i came in as a freshman senator, i was going to be quiet and i was going to burn the ropes like you we did when she came in, and then she was hit with 9 11 and boy, after eight months, boom. With me im better really truly quiet. You can imagine it that way because you dont know me that way than what i have never seen. It myself try to im looking, watching, and then just after i win the race and remember, i win mostly because of anita hill, believe me. Beli what happens . Right before im sworn in theres a story in the Washington Post that senator Robert Packwood have apparently, according to 25 women, engaged in whats the word i can say . Some say sexual misconduct. Lets go there. And i thought, i cant believe it. After anita hill, now im coming in and one of my colleagues is engaging this kind of behavior. To make a long story short, its not my business. Theres an Ethics Committee. I wasnt on it been. Mitch mcconnell was on again. Without going into detail, which your listeners will have to learn, in my book, without going, this thing was unreal ana i was come believe me when i tell you this, one of the only people in the senate pushing to air this dirty laundry. And if it was true, getting outy of the senate. And i came to grips with mitch mcconnell, who was very senior, powerful member of the Ethics Committee, soon to be chair of the Ethics Committee, and bob dole. E they attacked me as the biggest partisan. E. They did everything to stop me. We got rid of packwood because we pushed for these areas. The point behind the store is i never expected that would have been. Then we had a horrible ha earthquake in california. The plan to make in the book is when you get someplace can when youre in politics you dont know what issues will be on your plate than what exactly. You also went through bens work with me president , help them, bill clinton, barack obama, al gore at the site you are helping hillary clinton. Guest i sure am. Host as of the start of going down during the recount, the horrendous time to florida and taking on the issue. It was just one thing after another but probably the best one was when you were running against Carly Fiorina. By this point im innocent. Im on the committee with you on the environment. I see what youre doing and what youre up against to take on Climate Change and you are running, and i thought that that we see in Carly Fiorina running for president , you kind of put her away in that race. E guest one would have thought. Host the moment she got caught under talking about your hair and your reaction, we are kind of back to the beginning of your run. Once again people guest its a menacing. Im glad you brought it up so because its another amazing lesson to people watching this, that no matter what field they are when i took it what it is, or if they are raising their families, things happen that you dont expect to change the course of human events. Lets put it that way. Pe i was running in 2010. Carly fiorina was considered the top tier candidate. She had millions when she got io her golden parachute when she got fired from hewlettpackard. Shed millions of dollars or so into the race. And the race was neck and neck. We were trying to help the president with stimulus bills. Of a number standing on the floor just looking at as losing tens of thousands of jobs a month, and we wound up losing 8 million jobs in the recession. California was a mess. The real estate situation hit us. We were struggling. Families were distraught. And im running for reelection, and carly is blaming everything from even when it rains. And villagers we didnt have a drought. She is blaming everything on me, and its tight. E, and im saying we dont want to elect or because she shipped jobs overseas. She said barber boxers responsible for the recession. Theres no Climate Change. So anyway, flash forward, shahzad i think it was a cnn, as a matter of fact, and everythinl shes saying is being recorded she doesnt realize it. Instead of talking to a stuff about how to prep for the entity like you or i would do, give me the latest issues in the morning, written notes. Has been a change in this, that, or the other. She says to her staff, have you seen barbara boxers hair . And her staff said no, what about a . It is so yesterday. And she starts laughing. Now, the truth is about my hair, it does have a life of its own and i have many bad hair days. However, i thought at that moment everybody does. So what is she doing when shes saying this . Its kind of an insult to everybody. Except if you are wealthy enough to have a hairdresser of following you around every dayot than what she got in trouble with that and i think in the end guest shows her character than one people understood were in a hard time. But they understood including when you stood up against the iraq war, ever so many times that you were alone or maybe had a few people you were willing to take those brave stance. What i love about trying time the art of tough, the lives of issue, the lives of future but also when people didnt agree a with you, some of the republicans who voted for you, others can understood you would be tough and stand up for them. Guest it has been a remarkable thing. I did theater by a million votes. A mill again, some of these things that happened that shine a lot under the person is, and im going to go off for a minute just said when donald trump, for example, said he was excited when the Housing Market crashed because he thought i can make a lot of money. How do you make America Great win in your business life, thats how your mind works . I know a lot of business peoplen they may say ill buy something if its cheap but they dont think that way. That they are profiting offg, somebodys misery. Now that i put in that, it just proves that im tough. Th but truly there are things that happen in a campaign that show who the person really is inside. One thing may not be enough but there are few things. When people saw her making fun of being and not really caring about the issues when the cameras were off, and they put it together with the fact that when she was ceo she shipped tens of thousands of jobs overseas, they said not a good person. T host with a minute left looking at incredible career youve had and have written this book, the art of tough so that people understand and you can pass on to other. What do you really want to pass on to people like me, do people jump thinking of running for that supervisors seat . What you want to pass on . Guest what i want to pass onto you and i think have already passed it on his understand of them because they know you can win. And dont worry about the slings and arrows. It doesnt matter. What opened the book i have quotes from the right wing media that have said the worst things about me you can imagine. So thats what i want to say to everybody. Be empowered, stand up for what you believe in and do a be a satisfying life. E. Drama thank you so much. I recommend your book the art of tough because of think its going to be one, its fun to read, and people understand where you came from and it will give them the faith and politics to run themselves just make i hope so. Host thank
