Im brian thomas great to have you with us both democrats and republicans are claiming bragging rights after the u. S. Midterm elections with results pointing to a mixed picture in the First Nationwide vote since president from selection two years ago democrats are now on track to take control of the house of representatives but republicans have actually expanded their majority in the senate also defeated strong democrat challengers in state governor races. So lets take a quick look at the house of representatives as you can see two hundred eighteen seats are needed to take control there and the latest tally show the democrats on their way to that goal theyre expected to well exceed the twenty three seats needed to take the house. And heres how the senate is looking for a lighter shading there representing the seats that were not up for election and on top of that tonights results the republicans have defended their majority in the u. S. Senate on the democrat side nancy pelosi of california could again become speaker of the house a job she held from two thousand and seven to two thousand and eleven shes promised that as house leader she would observe a greater oversight of the trumpet ministration. Fire all of the a new day in america it would. Be ok. For them to their camera cuts and republicans if that restoring the constitutions checks and balances to the company. I was or President Trump has given his first reaction to the outcome of the midterms he tweeted simply this tremendous success tonight thanks to all of you or washington correspondent my schwitters standing by for us on capitol hill good to see a maya is the president s measure for success here the fact that his republicans have not been swept away by a blue wave. Yes some Strong Language there from the president and while the republicans certainly could color parts of tonight as a success i dont know if tremendous is the proper word to describe it there it was a long shot for democrats to take back the Senate Although of course hope springs eternal when youre in the minority and of course republicans ended up actually making gains in the senate securing an even larger majority than they had before as well as sweeping a few very hotly contested gubernatorial races that trump went to campaign for in the last days and weeks leading up to the election so certainly some things to celebrate on the republican side tonight on the democrat side you know it wasnt a tsunami but it was definitely a wave of sorts as we said the democrats have swept not only a majority into the house of representatives but have actually taken even more seats than they thought they would have latest estimates i saw where that they may gain as many as thirty five seats over the twenty three that they needed to get a majority of and there were several other pieces of good news. Districts that were flipped that had been staunchly republican a few governors races that were won by democrats previously held by republicans some things to point to on both sides tonight that they can say we had a good night ok theres a lot to break down what when we look at the popular vote mile that means the actual number or or percentage of votes the picture is extremely positive for the democrats can you explain that for us hows that possible. Well one thing that we saw was very high early voting turnout numbers and i believe that these numbers actually even broke some early voting records in many states this is always a tricky number to try to read into because people who vote early tend to be people who are going to vote anyway and those people by and large tend to be democratic voters in general in the u. S. Elections more voter turnout equals more democrats getting elected to congress which is something i sort of saw here tonight but one thing that we have to remember is that a lot of these districts in a lot of these elections are gerrymandered which means that they are drawn and divided up in ways that are meant to sort of give an advantage to one party or another and there are a lot of races that we can look into where there were very very close races in a heavily gerrymandered districts so even though turnout was high in these districts it was still favored for one party or another and ultimately that party ended up pulling through like a my were going to be talking about diversity in just a second thats because the next u. S. Congress waltz will be the most diverse ever a Record Number of women have been elected most of them democrats and several who broke racial and other social barriers now these history makers include alexandria because you know court has a closely watched and rising young politician she becomes the youngest woman ever elected to congress the twenty nine year old new yorker want to seat in the house for the democrats meanwhile illinois omar and reseated to lead become the first two muslim women to serve in congress and sharif davids a republican incumbent of gum the first native american and gay woman elected to the house market polls whats behind these developments. This is a moment that democrats have been waiting for really since january twenty first twenty seventeen the day after President Trump was sworn into office on the day that we saw that massive womens march sweep not only washington d. C. But really many parts of the world this is in many ways a backlash to a lot of the policy is the rhetoric that donald trump has engaged in and a lot of what people believe that he stands for the sort of old guard of older white men who in the minds of a lot of these people used to run the world and are now sort of outdated and this is the new guard of people who are sweeping into power a lot to celebrate for people who like seeing women in power like seeing minorities in power like seeing people who are l. G. B. Tea and power a lot of barriers broken tonight in those counts but still weve seen now just i think a over a a little over one hundred women are now going to be in the house of representatives which is still only under one quarter of the representation of the u. S. When a little over fifty percent of the u. S. Is female so still a way to go to get actual equal representation ok briefly if you could mario these new progressive voices that you mentioned inside the Democratic House will they be able to get a platform nationally and still be able to win majorities among moderates and undecided voters thats going to be a big question for the democrats moving forward. Certainly a big question and this is certainly a leg up for those progressive voices a movement that had been sort of a rumbling in the background of the Democratic Party for years and found a very loud megaphone with Bernie Sanders one of the democratic president ial contenders during the two thousand and sixteen election so now we have what could end up being a Snowball Effect with these more very Left Progressive voices like alexandria has in power margaret zirin thanks so much for that. Ok lets get the International Perspective now here with danielle or schwarzer director of the German Council on Foreign Relations today to you what are your initial reactions to the results were seeing in Washington Well its obviously very very good news from the european perspective that the house of representatives went to the democrats but there were sort of high hopes because of the way donald trump conducted his campaign because of the extent of of hatred and polarization i think europeans are still shocked that he could keep you know the Senate Although you know the full cost where that he would but still from a political perspective of what is happening in the us we see a deeply divided country we have good news for the electoral results for the democrats for the house but at the same time we look at america still with some amazement of what is possible in political terms ok but reassurance as well that the system of checks and balances does work there was some concern about that here in europe indeed to some extent you know the big hope was of course that there could be an impeachment of the president and now that the republicans keep the senate of course the chances are very low but europeans have had have been hoping for this for two years now that it could eventually happen ok well what about the house now in control of the democrats how do you think thats going to affect for europe from a european perspective the president s emphasis on american America First and his push for that agenda on my belief is that as of today he is campaign mood for the president ial elections coming up in two years time and for him Foreign Policy as we have seen over the past two years is a function of his domestic agenda so making America Great again is about solidifying his power and showing his voters that he is delivering something in their interest so i dont think we have much reason to assume that he will downscale his Foreign Policy that he will be more conciliatory with the europeans that he will seek consensus. I rather think that he will pick and choose topics where he as president can actually act and show his own voters that he is acting in their interest and europe is not part of the equation that cooperation with europe can help the u. S. But he has to find the relationship as a zero sum game in particular between the u. S. And germany ok what about what do you think the impressions are right now in moscow in beijing in tehran among americas competitors and its adversaries will they perceive the house now being droll of the democrats as something that has weakened this president and feel emboldened to challenge his agenda to some extent probably because he can claim victory after this Election Night but they also have studied the way he conducts his own Foreign Policy how he can possibly act in the future and i think they still expect that he will be full of surprises full of challenges for them and that hes not turning into a partner suddenly ok what do you think these results mean for u. S. German relations specifically well germany since he got into Office German policy makers have of course been trying to build close contacts with his administration which in some regards has been very difficult the close partners like for instance mattis or the defense secretary or others but the other focus that german policymakers have had is congress and now the conditions with the house going to the democrats better to find more like minded people and we have a debate in germany about how to deal with the u. S. Should we go into confrontational mood when we have something called strategic patients and wait for the time off to trump although the pendulum wont fully swing back and now there are more people in office who may be more open to having a constructive dialogue with europeans and i think germans will use that this result means a plus for the strategy of strategic patience yes it does. Daniela schwarzer of the German Council on Foreign Relations thanks much for being with us. Well democratic hopeful better orourke tried his best but failed in his long shot attempt to stop senator ted cruz from winning a new term in texas cruz came out on top in the deeply conservative state winning by a number of Percentage Points the forty seven year old thanks its borders and also his challenger in a victory speech orourke shot to National Fame after his record breaking Fund Raising Campaign captured many democratic hopes that he might take the state and eventually a National Leadership role. We saw that assault that was unprecedented we saw a hundred Million Dollar race with hollywood coming in against the state with the National Media coming in against the state. But all the money in the world was no match for the good people of texas and the hard working men and women across our state. Well voters have turned out in Record Numbers this should have celebrated as a victory for democracy instead in a number of states is turned into a real logistical problem voters have had to wait in line for hours at polling stations machines have been having problems and theres been a lot of difficulties out there in a number of states carl now spends tracking the story for us karl what youve been seeing i mean look the majority of voting when pretty smoothly there werent so many problems but in five states of the take you there we saw lots of issues as you mentioned long lines was one of them in fact voters were documenting the issues at their local polling stations and heres some of what they showed us and was pretty put it that way lets start in North Carolina this video shows a two to three hour wait just to get inside the Polling Center this is an area with a lot of voters some eight thousand registered voters there a lot of them had to wait in lines just like that one this is in Atlanta Georgia of course a battleground states a night a local reporter on the ground says hundreds of voters here waited hours this morning why well there were only three Voting Machines to go around also here in georgia a local voter took this video just look how long that line is going all the way down the hallway in some parts of georgia in fact judges had to order the precincts to stay open longer for that exact reason and now in brooklyn in new york some voters just kind of gave up here you see people leaving in Crown Heights after waiting two hours reportedly some Voting Machines there were broken just lots of overcrowding brian weve also seen reports of even bigger problems broken scanners a shortage of voting materials even as you see faulty Voting Machines this is from indiana a voter trying to psych the democratic candidate but it just isnt working and keeps kind of defaulting back to the republican clearly a faulty machine there some machines or may have actually been tampered with the voter its like a picture inside his voting booth he writes i feel like something has gone wrong if i can access the u. S. B. Stick in this voting machine. He had the ability even to quote close pollsters by pressing a button you can see there a little door has been opened with access to the machine thats not could sign a lot of talk of course after twenty sixteen after that election of foreign interference in the election but clearly theres a lot of work to be done domestically in terms of resources and getting those machines up to date ok a lot to look in there into there karl thanks very much for that. We have some breaking news coming in right now from cameroon where reports indicate Seventy Eight children who were taken hostage by separatists have now been released now thats according to a priest involved in negotiations reports say the kidnappers are Still Holding the Children School principal and one teacher captive well bring you more details as they come in are some of the other stories making the news at this hour the florida man accused of mailing bombs to prominent democrats and other critics of President Trump has appeared in new york court to Face Criminal Charges says our side york was denied balogna faces up to forty eight years in jail if convicted. S. G. Who played out a one all draw in the other groups the game and germany schulte edged closer to the knockout stages thanks to a two nil win over. Or byron in a can secure their place in the last sixteen of the Champions League when they host greek side eighty k. Athens as later on wednesday the german champions are in a bit of a slump with the pressure mounting on coach nico coach he needs a win in europe ahead of a big weekend showdown with dortmund. Hes accused of not having a plan b. When the going gets tough nico kovacs knows his job is on the line. The problems arent as pronounced in the Champions League at least not yet by and have yet to lose a game but they also have yet to convince those of us in the studio. The physical work we put in is not always rewarded in the way wed like but as a coach or is a player you have to try to stay positive of course i can say this was a good or that was and good but believe me that wont increase my players confidence. And. Neither will conceding a late goal in the eighty ninth minute to be exact against frye book in the been asleep on saturday thats more points dropped. Theres even talk of a rebellion inside the buy and camp some of the senior players unhappy with their reduced playing time others are cutting the coach some slack. Yes indeedy of the fun were the ones on the pitch were responsible when i see a match like against freiburg where we were ahead in the seventy fifth minute you shouldnt give that results away and thats nothing to do with the coach its us players who are on the pitch. Even if the play as i call it its the coach that always pays the price in football. There are its here now are the look at the first stock markets to close after the u. S. Midterms ran on asian markets the Midterm Election results seem to pretty much priced in tokyo the nikkei index dropped when the result became clear closing point three percent down only the stock market in hong kong was also closed in negative negative territory by the same margin analysts in asia say split congress is best for the market it allows President Trump to continue his business and growth friendly policies while the gridlock will keep a check on some of his more Disruptive Market actions like the trade battle with china u. S. Stock futures point to a strong opening on wall street later today. Well if it really is the economy stupid as bill clinton is often quoted it should have been a walk in the park for the republicans with the president in office they went into these midterms on a Strong Economy two hundred fifty thousand new jobs were created in october the u. S. Labor market is considered to be at near full employment g. D. P. Growth in the Third Quarter came in a three and a half percent and all Financial Markets president from as happy to take credit for steady rise in stocks now my colleague last heard of a bit of your business joins me now here in this studio as youve reported from was the street for us for decades is the current standing of the counter proof that most americans did not believe that it was all trumps doing i guess them is it one thing first donald trump himself over the last couple of weeks of the can paint it not. Make this election about the economy anymore the economy played second fiddle to other topics here of course immigration the perceived threat of a caravan so it was ironically because we do have a Strong Economy in the United States the president himself who went off topic here he did not run on a Strong Economy he ran on fear and everything so he took this basically out of the equation almost but of course yes as you mentioned we have a very Strong Economy in the United States right now unemployment is down g. D. P. Growth is good but of course that was not all of President Trumps doing everybody in america knows that wall street knows that investors know that the economic boom has of course started about ten years ago under the Obama Presidency unemployment started falling drastically under the Obama Presidency from almost ten percent to four percent now its under five percent and now its under four percent so yes under President Trump that very strong Economic Trend has continued but its obviously not all his doing with his tax reform part of course they did the tax reform that the republicans put in place has played a very strong part in getting the economy to go maybe Even Stronger but it helps most businesses it was a huge Corporate Tax cut it was a tax cut for the wealthy none of that trickles down to the consumer to voters and even President Trump found that really interesting over the last couple of days only has almost admitted that when he threw out a possible tax cut for the middle class just days before the election just about last week he came out and said hes planning a tax cut a huge tax cut for the middle class ten percent or so less and he said that even though congress is not in session he talked about it like this was a done deal and it just needs another signature of course none of this is planned right now so while the tax cut was a good thing for the American Economy it helped most of the rich and the corporate. It did not really help most americans you talk about the rich in the cocoa. Does wall street lie dont chop was so is so obviously liked by the banks by the Investment Community because its the regulation efforts the republicans have for their deregulated the banks after of course they have been regulated much more following the financial crisis of about ten years ago and now that deregulation of course leads them to get higher profits that paying less in taxes all these things of course make the president very popular in that particular community other than that of course there hasnt been a lot of work done in lets say Infrastructure Spending incident and some other ways a lot of businesses in america have their own problems with the president so its really a mixed picture here what does this result. Should it become reality mean for trumps trade policy what trade policy might end up being less extreme finally in the end because we had a situation over the last two years with the republicans not only controlling the white house but both houses of congress that the republicans basically were able to put in legislation and the democrats could of course vote against it but with having no majority not do much about it and now with the democrats being in a majority position in the house as its very much looks like at this hour. They are at least able to open up these legislative packages and maybe at something take something out make amendments or so and so i think thats going to make a lot of the policy over the next two years a lot less extreme move it slightly more towards middle ground and of course that that would help the economy as well whats the next economic have of that trump needs to cross and come the democrats make him stumble i dont see much of an economic hurdle right now the big question is really just how long can he keep the economy going like this especially if you look at the markets specifically stocks we have seen a ten year bull market Everybody Knows this is on its last leg so i think thats at some point coming down whether theres a majority or not last out of it of your business thank you very much.
