Point of world war ii were american and allied forces lost their lives to defend our freedom. 160,000 service men were involved in the landing, 13,000 us and british paratroopers dropped in 6000 ships in 12 countries involved. The history of today is remarkable and it is because of those individuals you see there, part of the greatest generation that we live in the world we live in today. There are less than 500,000 world war ii veterans alive. Out of 60 million americans who served you are looking get two, now three of the brave faces that really changed the world as we know it and we have them to thank for the incredible lifestyle we lead today. The president has had a very eventful week, historic week that started with a bit of pleasure, pomp and circumstance he enjoyed by being with the queen of england, then got down to business with teresa may but this is the most important part of the trip, what happened yesterday at portsmouth into today at normandy. He is expected to make a speech later today and meet with french president Emmanuel Macron. A momentous day. Thank you for being on the telephone. Just before going on the air today. Should be here in france in the next hour or so and set to begin the anniversary of the historic landing on omaha beach, omaha beach just below at the American Cemetery, people looking out over the ocean. Sound like we lost johns cell phones. One point that needs to be made, not to start such a monument to stay on a negative tone but the only time in our lives of this experience. The 100th anniversary will not have any of these individuals that are marking this monument is occasioned. They will have passed on so todays an opportunity to hear the stories, to reflect on their amazing accomplishment and to live in this moment because this moment will never exist again. I was thinking that exact same thing as i was getting into work today, how the 75th anniversary is so special because it will be the closing of a chapter of American History and so wonderful to see the people who fought on dday, actually going to be here for the 75th anniversary. It is a Beautiful Day in normandy but 75 years ago that beach looked very different. John roberts reflecting on that this morning, absolutely stunning day but that was the personification of hell on earth 75 years ago. I want to get to a little history. Dday was the largest joint military operation ever undertaken. The United States, the uk, france and canada all working together. All landing on the normandy coast line and the goal was to secure normandy, then liberate paris and push german troops as far back as they possibly could and that is what happens but at heavy costs to American Forces and allied forces. Have of the people who died on dday were American Military servicemembers. Expecting the president s arrival, the airport on your right, at any moment. The ceremonial area, 10 0 for their time, 404 here on the east coast. One of the most fascinating aspects of the dday invasion was the reception they engaged in. They were expecting this invasion to happen much further north in france and that was because of blown up think tanks in an operation where individuals made it sound like they were busily doing things at night and this was brought just over the airways to try to fool the germans, spies were involved in this. Rommel, the german guy in charge, visiting his wife in germany. The germans had a fight and so many young men lost their lives but created the world we have today. One of the reasons there was a heavy loss of american lives, because of a current fishing boats a little too far off track where they shouldnt have been. Obviously horrifically unfortunate situation there. We are waiting for the president to arrive in france. He will get off air force one or marine one to head to normandy where he will meet with french president Emmanuel Macron and his wife. We often attack the hollywood industry for various things they do wrong but the movie saving private ryan, for the first time for most of america but all of america addicted to experience dday, wasnt there on the landing, really captured as much as possible for those that werent there the horrors of that day and not diminishing what those who stormed the beaches of normandy experienced but for those of us that didnt, that experience of watching that movie all our jaws dropped and we really really realized as much as we can how horrific that day was and the fear these 18, 19yearolds when those doors came down and those german bullets rained down upon them so many of those individuals were killed instantly, our brave boys pressed forward into normandy and we have the world we have now. John roberts has a stronger connection at the normandy reporter apologies. We kept having technical problems with the system crashing before we went on the air but a lot of people going around here going through the process at the American Cemetery, 9400 soldiers who call this their last resting place and people looking over the question to utah beach below the American Cemetery and it is so peaceful and tranquil today, imagine what was going on 75 years ago. A veteran from the vietnam war said we went through hellish times in the text offensive but i cant imagine landing here at utah beach. What is extraordinary about today as it was pouring with rain yesterday. It is forecast to be worse tomorrow with gale force windss and pouring rain but today there is literally not a cloud in the sky on the 75th anniversary celebration about to get underway. We would hear speeches from president macron of france and donald trump will say to all our friends and partners our cherished alliance was forged in the heat of battle, proven in the blessings of peace. Our bond is unbreakable. They will also brief many of the veterans here, 20 American Veterans of world war ii here, 60 veterans of the dday operation, not necessarily soldiers who came ashore in the first or second wave but people involved in the overall operation which went on a couple weeks before they established the beachhead here, carlsons from the coast guard just passing by, one of the dignitaries here as well. This is shaping up to be a very special day. I was here was george bush in 2004 for the 60th anniversary, never thought i would be back 15 years later but like all the people here today it is such an honor to be an observer here as they participate in this glorious celebration of an extra merry moment in history as we pay tribute to the bravery of all of those who fought and many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of freedom. 9 minutes in here so far. Weve done a good job going through the history of this monument is day but what are you feeling in normandy with the veterans, the onlookers . What is the general sense that you can report to us being on the ground right now . There is such a sense of reverence for this place. I dont know if you have ever been to the American Cemetery but it is extraordinary in its simplicity, you have white crosses, white stars of david marking the final resting place of 9400 servicemembers who gave their lives, many in the dday initial invasion, many in the days and weeks following that but it is a sense of reverence but also a sense of celebration as well, how history didnt turn on that day and in the days and weeks following and how different a world this could be if Operation Overlord had not been a success. Talk about some of the anomalies, there was a brief whole in the weather though it was nowhere near as nice as it is today back then, the fact that they got pushed by the parents to places they didnt want to land. So many things couldve gone wrong and many things did go wrong and at the same time the overall operation did turn out to be a success and people are looking back on that day is almost a miraculous turning point in history and how Different Things could be had things gone really wrong that day. There were so many pieces of the puzzle but had to come together. The deception where the germans were convinced the invasion was coming in where the channel cuts across. The diversionary tactic was so successful they had german reinforcements there. The weather was so bad that rommel went to berlin to give his wife a pair of shoes for her 50th birthday rather than being with his panzer divisions in france. It is kind of a miraculous day and a lot of people here are sort of in our of how everything unfolded that day and turned the tide of history. Carley when you get a meeting of World Leaders at this high level you have to talk about safety. What is the security operation like in normandy right now . They have really got this place locked down. They started letting people in about 5 00 in the morning but close all the roads around here. A couple hours after that you cut through several layers of security to get in here but once you are in you are able to roam around the entire ceremony, we went close to where donald trump and president macron will make their presentation. An interesting part of this, go to and overlook overlooking utah beach where the superintendent of the American Cemetery will walk them through the history of the landing here. There was a magnificent flyover. Everybody is able to walk through the crosses and try to find a familiar name. Familiar names like the roosevelt junior, the son of Teddy Roosevelt buried at the ceremony. He took part of the dday operation and the Beautiful Day we have today as well with the sun shining down, temperatures fairly cold but a remarkable place to be right now. I look beside me, nancy pelosi, speaker of the house is here talking to a few people. Quite a large american contingent, politicians, military members, members of the cabinet and the pentagon on the civilian and military side. Everybody has come together for this very important occasion today. Perfect jumping off to get to my next question. Your day job, chief white house correspondent, today the 75th anniversary of dday seems to me like one day where politics should not enter into this. Youve been doing this longer than i, dealing with the white house especially this white house for a while now. Does it stay that way . Does it stay nonpolitical . The celebration is a commemoration itself will staypolitical but the president on his way out was talking about mexico and whether they will make the changes necessary on immigration to avoid tariffs going into effect, the backandforth between british politicians and the president the last few days. The mayor of london, jeremy corbin, the opposition leader, there shouldnt be any politics in france because president macron and donald trump get along well but these president ial trips, i have been on enough of them, president clinton or president bush or now donald trump, they are very often driven by politics back home and this one has been driven by politics back at home and in the uk but in france i think the rest of the day will be pretty apolitical. Dont forget after the ceremony hear the president and president macron will go to the nearby town of con and hold a bilateral meeting of the president will fight islands where he will spend tonight and most of tomorrow. It is an occasion to put aside politics but the way things are in america and around the world you are never far away from politics. I think they will put it aside during the ceremony but it could creep back in later today. We can expect to see a warm greeting between the president and nancy pelosi given the setting but the president and Emmanuel Macron will be meeting for that working lunch later today and they will talk about the economy, National Security and it is good that you pointed out they do have a relatively Good Relationship. There was a little bobble between the two of them when Emmanuel Macron made comments about nationalism but over all these two World Leaders do have a pretty Good Relationship. They do have a Good Relationship and theres a little bit of politics. Macron has to look strong. France does not have a rich history of reelecting president s and macron would like to get reelected. We talked about this last time the president was in france and that was back on veterans day. The president has got low Approval Ratings, macrons Approval Ratings are far lower. Donald trumps Approval Ratings are great in comparison to Emmanuel Macron so there is a split politically between them. Macron had the statement that we need a True European Army because we can no longer rely on the United States for the defense of europe but for the most part the two leaders to get along very well. They will clearly talk about trade and economics but i think the Bigger Picture here is talking about National Security. When you have the threat from iran is what to do about that. That will be a big topic of discussion. North korea will be a big topic of discussion. Nato is always a big topic of discussion and looking at the 75th anniversary of nato taking place in the context of the president increasing competition from nato nations it is a relevant subject as well. Thank you for your insight, please stay with us, watching this amazing day unfold. We will take a quick commercial break and be right back. See wha. What is that . Thats a blazer . Thats a chevy blazer . Aww, this is dope. This thing is beautiful. I love the lights. Oh man, its got a mean face on it. It looks like a piece of candy. Look at the interior. This is nice. This is my sexy mom car. I would feel like a cool dad. Its just really chic. I love this thing. Its gorgeous. I would pull up in this in a heartbeat. I want one of these. That is sharp. The allnew chevy blazer. Speaks for itself. I dont know who they got to design this but give them a cookie and a star. Be go[ laughing ] gone. Woo hoo. Welcome to my house mmm, mmm, mmmmm. Ball. Ball. Ball. Awww, whos a good boy . Its me. Me, me, me. Yuck, thats gross. You got to get that under control. [ dogs howling ] seriously . Embrace the mischief. Say get pets tickets into your x1 voice remote to see it in theaters. Good morning, welcome back. A busy and historic thursday morning, you are looking live images of normandy, france where donald trump is going to be visiting to mark the 75th anniversary of dday. This is where the president will be arriving on air force one. We expect him in a few minutes to arrive but overall the historic day, a momentous occasion and one that is marked by people that actually fought bravely in dday that is still there and alive to experience this with all of us. Clearly this is the top story of the day but the world goes on. Carley another top story immigration. Border official sounding the alarm over surging number of arrests. Our nation is experiencing unprecedented Border Security and the military and crisis on this border, both that and between ports of entry. Yesterday june 4th cvp apprehended 4100 individuals and has 19,293 people in custody. We are bursting at the seams. It is unsustainable and cant continue. More than 130,000 migrants were arrested last month alone. That is a 13 year high. What is going to take to turn a corner on this crisis . Matt krause joins us to react. Representative, before we get to your answer, lets show the folks at home the numbers, may border rest numbers in a 13 year highlight carly said. Take a look back. 130,000 apprehensions. That is an almost 34 increase from just last month. What do we need to do to stem the tide . Pretty incredible when you think there are 144,000 individuals detained last month alone and weve heard in texas that they only detain one of two or three people trying to cross the border so that means even more people are getting into the country than they are apprehending. As you just heard they are bursting at the seams. We have to do something. Definitely a crisis at the border. We have to stem the tide. Thank you for your answer on that. Stay with us, we are going to go back to france, the president landing in air force one. 10 23, air force one just landing seconds ago. The president spent last night in ireland, he is going to hop onto marine one and then go to normandy and experience this ceremonial celebration of the unity the United States still has with the allied forces and is expected to make a speech, participated a wreath laying ceremony, walk on over to overlook omaha beach and meet with the french president and the first lady of france as well. The president supposedly sticking to the following schedule, taking 10 minutes to get off of air force one, board read one and make a 20 minute journey over to normandy but everything seems to be a little bit later on this trip so we will roll with the punches and keep you in the loop. Congressman krause, lets bring you back into this conversation. The president in france, this will be a really big moment for the president. What do you think he should say in his speech later today . Reporter i heard john roberts talking about prepared remarks donald trump was going to deliver and it struck the right tone. It talks about the historic unity we have shown between those european alliances especially on a day like dday 75 years ago and how the community should do great things in the future. From the little bit i heard of what the president is going to say i think hes on the right track and i think his remarks are spot on for such a historic day and what has taken place in normandy at the tremendous amount of sacrifice and blood that was shed on those beaches and tremendous gratitude we as the American People can have it is men willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It does appear you are a millennial. I apologize if my research is incorrect but in the world in which we live where millennials are excoriated, everybody that wasnt part of the greatest generation are excoriated for not understanding the true meaning of sacrifice. Do you think today will give a sense to those individuals asked what true sacrifice, selfless sacrifice for ones nation is . I think today is a perfect day for reflection. We start to see the cost and the toll that these young men, a lot of times teenagers, just into their early 20s were willing to give for our freedom and liberty and i saw a 97yearold man parachuting into normandy yesterday and that encapsulates the result, the tenacity of these men who stormed the beaches 75 years ago today and we would all do well to take some lessons and cues from the greatest generation to make sure we are living up to the standards they set and the legacy they gave us because they were willing to fight and give their all not just in the european theater but today, looking back on 75 years ago today the ultimate price so many paid does help us we are doing our part to make sure america is the greatest nation in the world. You are a millennial and a state representative in texas, you are doing pretty well, thank you for being with us, we appreciate it. Todd air force one has landed. We are awaiting the president s walked down the staircase over to marine one for the quick flight over to normandy. Carley Martha Maccallum live in normandy. What is the atmosphere like today . Must be incredible to see firsthand. It is an absolutely stellar beautiful blue morning at the american ceremony in normandy, france. A lot of veterans here, world war ii veterans we have been talking to for the past few days. The mood is upbeat in general. Everyone looking forward to speeches from president macron of france followed by donald trump shortly after but there is a solemn mood you think about the 9388 who are buried in the cemetery behind me. They gave everything. Their sacrifice was complete. So many veterans refer to that and say the reason i have come back is i have to pay homage to the people that fought on either side of me who never got the chance to have a family, get married, watch them grow up. All the experiences these men never got to have and that is the overwhelming feeling of so many people who came back to visit. We saw secretary carrie, nancy pelosi, it is a gathering of leaders from all over the world where people recognize as your prior guest was saying a generation that was selfless that saw something more important than their own lives that they had to fight for and that is what characterizes the greatest generation and then Important Message for all of us to pause and think about what they did for a lot of, june 6, 1944, when it began right here. Todd Martha Maccallum joining us live. You have the best assignment of all the normandy assignments, speaking to so many members of the greatest generation. Is there a store you can tell that resonated with you . Reporter you heard the prior guest talking about tom rice and he nailed it. Tom rice is 97 years old, doesnt complain about anything, he wants to jump out of the airplane so everybody remembers. He was in the 101st airborne known as the screaming eagles, they practice for two years, the jump in georgia and they got here, it was pitch black night, the plans they were on were hits and the pilots were killed, the planes went down when paratroopers jumped out of them, the stories of heroics are beyond our comprehension to understand how much danger they were in and how threatened how threatening that was and the perseverance of someone like tom rice who comes back here and enjoys being with all the people who have common experience with him but a message to all of us about what it means to be tough, strong, resilient and not to worry about yourself but think about other people so another person who comes to mind in his 90s made his first trip back, he was a medic, 18 years old and tended to those who were dying on the beach when he was just 18 years old. He tried to save their lives and yesterday came back for the first time to pay tribute to many of those who were lost on the beaches. He was a remarkable man, so moving to talk to him, the humility of these veterans is the thing that sticks with you. They dont want to be looked at as he rose. Those are the real heroes. We have a little bit of talent from him. Lets listen and get your reaction on the back end. This is one of the closures for that jump representing the United States coming here. This might be the conclusion for me or closure of all the things, shame and blame we all gather together. I appreciate the love and heartfelt emotion. Is 97 years old and look 20 years younger. Must be an honor to talk to him. Reporter it really is. We should all be so lucky to be as sharp and with it as tom rice is at 97 years old. He will keep doing these jumps. When he talks about closure, for himself personally but also to recognize world war ii could have ended very differently. We could have ended with German Occupation not being rolled back. Think about the jews of europe and the incredible toll they paid. Carley we want to get to the walking shot but dont want to miss your call. Reporter something we have been waiting for. And incredible trip for the past few days, the president has taken the same journey the allies took over the last 72 hours which he was in portsmouth in the United Kingdom where troops rallied and convened before they began the journey and donald trump in france where he will be greeted by president macron and dignitaries here today, and incredible assembly of World Leaders here to commemorate this event. Think about the president and the things he has spoken about, nato. A lot of people say he wants to destroy nato but the action he has taken has been to encourage the nations involved in it to increase defense capabilities by paying more into the system of nato. These are the big issues he will talk about with the manual macron when they sit down later. The inspirational uplifting speech, president reagan gave an amazing speech on the 40th anniversary, these are the things as historians you look back at later that markley moment in the president has an opportunity to do something very special today and we will all be watching. Todd as the president and first lady make way in marine one, your show, on our show we mentioned in todays day and age colleges, high schools are whitewashing history. How important is a day like today to see what really happens . The sacrifices, the horror, the world that resulted from that, how important is that . Reporter i think it is extremely important and one of the reasons we spent the last couple months featuring world war ii veterans every week on our show and there is not a mandatory world war ii class in high school. There is a broad scope of history being taught. It is extremely important the next generation understand the sacrifice because freedom is not free as we know and people who are buried here at the normandy American Cemetery gave their lives to the freedom we enjoy today and it is an extraordinary lesson but so important for children to understand. Carley when you hear stories about world war ii you always hear about the thousands of young men who and up to enlist because they felt it was an honor to serve and it was their duty to serve and they couldnt think about doing anything else in such a grave time. Its not like that anywhere. Was there a greater sense of American Pride back then . Reporter i think the need for victory in that moment was so clearcut that when you watch bombing going on in london and you see hitlers troops marching through the arc they triomphe in paris, theres an immediate danger, the next step would be to come across the ocean into a similar sort of thing in the United States which is an thinkable. There was no choice but to fight and no choice but to rally at that point. It was very clearcut but there was a tremendous sense of duty. Think about the fact there were people 16 and 17 years old, some changed the dates on their baptismal certificates or birth certificate so they could be sent over. They wanted to be part of that mission. It was almost embarrassing for young men who were home because people wanted to understand why are you here when everyone elses over there . Best to forget the home front effort that was underway and the sacrifices everybody made and things they did without to support the war effort. It was a 100 acrosstheboard. Todd some individuals as young as 15. I put myself in a 15yearolds shoes, can barely tie my shoes much less decide i want to go to a foreign land and fight and potentially die for my country. You are looking live, marine one gets ready to leave for normandy. I want your sense of this. In your interview you he said young generations need to seek out veterans to ask about their experiences. We started at the top of the show explaining this is it, this is the 75th anniversary, 100 year anniversary, they will not be around. How important is it for the Younger Generation to talk to their grandparents, greatgrandparents and get a sense of this history . Reporter a lot of individuals in their 90s say that up until recently they didnt share their stories, too painful to do so but now they are opening up and talking about it and it is important for people to listen to that and keep in mind these opportunities are going to be gone. At the 40th anniversary there were 11 million world war ii veterans. Today there are 500,000 and most of them in their 90s. Think about that. These opportunities to meet these men are going away and it is. To get their stories down and share them with Younger Generations because it is what we are all about as american citizens. Carley it is amazing there are 500,000 alive, the power of modern medicine. You just saw marine one about to take off with the president and first lady inside as they head to normandie. Thanks, we will be right back. Todd fox news alert, that picture says it all. Sarah mooney about the unit normandy as you look at the cemetery in normandy. Think about what they are looking at. Men and women making the ultimate sacrifice so we could live in the society we live in now this day, june 6, 75 years ago. The hell those men experienced is unreal. Todays ceremony will be something we should all stop and watch because it is going to be so powerful, so moving and such a testament to the greatest generation. Carley every one of those graves is a life, a person who wasnt able to have a family. It is so wonderful to see the faces of the men who survived dday and are alive to see this day, the 75th anniversary of it. We have dan caldwell, a concerned veteran for america representative, also a retired marine, what does this day means you . When i was a young marine just out of boot camp one of my instructors said your reputation as a marine is built on those that came before you whether they were marines, soldiers, sailors, airmen who fought in previous conflicts and say you walk in the shadows of giant and these men who stormed the beaches of normandy were true giants and one of the reasons i was able as a marine to hold my head high is what the world war ii generation did, what the korean war generation did and watching the ceremonies reminds me they are one of the reasons i decided to join the military. It is inspiring to see. A good reminder what this country has done and pass generation sacrificed. Carley that makes the topic, the reason we have you on today, so interesting, talking about the va and the care these brave men and women get, theres a new act called the Va Mission Act changing the ways that we treat our veterans who give so much. Give us some background and what you hope to accomplish through the Va Mission Act. Today the big day for the department of veterans affairs. This is the launch of the Veterans Community care program which will give more choice and more ability to access on the community if that is what they want. This is the biggest change in va healthcare in a generation, something donald trump signed on and campaigned on and it is appropriate it launches today because the modern va system grew to the point it is today to serve the world war ii generation and this program will help ensure veterans of future generations are properly served at the va. Carley a breakdown of this Va Mission Act, will they pay to see nonva doctors if the weight is over 20 days . Or the drive is over 30 minutes and trump signed this last june and a key portion of it will take affect today. Some are concerned that the va is not prepared to handle this. What do you think of that . By all indications theyve done all they can to get to a place where they are able to serve veterans properly. The va is a massive bureaucracy bigger than the United States navy and they dont have a good track record of rolling out new programs. I expect some problems. It will be up to the va to fix those problems as they emerge. I am confident Robert Wilkie will be monitoring this, his top priority, a good team in place. We hope they work with congress on issues that come up. The key thing will be dont try to cover them up and just fix them as they emerge. Carley you mentioned the dirty be word, bureaucracy. Part of a larger discussion we are having in our country about socialized medicine, socialism in general. What lessons and especially those democrats are espousing medicare for all and socialism, what lessons can they take from the vas experience . The va is at its worst when it is not encouraging innovation and competition. Socialist programs or whatever you want to call them, you dont see that competition, that choice. When you deny veterans choice and dont give them options ultimately they get worse health care and the universal healthcare model in britain where the president just was, you dont have that choice, you are trapped in a government run facility. If that is not working for you you dont have another option. Interesting that in the democrat primary you have one democrat, seth moulton, stand up and say i dont support medicare for all. I dont support singlepayer because of my personal experience in the va. Fascinating to see because you have other people like Bernie Sanders who hold up the va as a model government healthcare system. Lessons to learn. The va is a great example of what happens when the government has too much control on the healthcare system. Todd the wife of chris kyle called the va a disaster and she did so because she wanted veterans to seek private care so she will be probably happy about this. Some are concerned the Va Mission Act will be the end of the va. Consider all the scandals that have happened and the long wait times and facilities being dirty, think about how people that deserve that the least, our nations veterans, would it be a bad thing if the va disappears . I would say at the end of the day what matters is veterans get the care they need and they are whether it is at a great va facility or privatesector facility. In 201415 it was fair to call the va a disaster. You have hundreds of veterans dying on wait lists, some of them secret across the country. There have been real improvements at the va the last few years, still a lot of work to do but we want to get to a system where the veteran has the control. They are at the center of their healthcare and that is where concern veterans from america want to go and where donald trump wants to go. These individuals who basically are the reason we have what we have, shouldnt they get decent healthcare . That is the main take away, isnt it . Absolutely. Too often in washington dc the discussion is what is going to happen with the va urography, they might not use that term but you hear terms like the health of the va. It should be the health of the veteran weather through the va with the privatesector it doesnt matter as long as the veterans get the best care possible. Todd executive director of concerned veterans for america. What can the Trump Administration do to help the veteran community . The biggest thing they should be focusing on with the va is ensuring proper implementation of the Va Mission Act. Once that happens they should look at what reforms they can do. We want to get to a place, you dont get prior authorization for privatesector provider and if they want to go to a va hospital that is fine but the privatesector option is within the va network is better, they should be and to access that without getting permission from va bureaucrats. That is where donald trump wants to go and where we want to go too. Next couple years we would like to see that. I also think general veterans benefit from policies overall that make this country better, we are Americans First and veterans second. Things that make our country stronger and our economy stronger just for all americans. Todd marine one with donald trump and first lady milania landing second ago. On such a historic day, 75th anniversary of dday. Your discussions with veterans of dday . I had the opportunity to meet a lot of world war ii veterans, growing up i was very interested in the history of world war ii. I read a lot and it is one of the reasons i chose the military, the marines, and an army operation. One thing that stuck out to me, a lot has changed with the military. The bond of service that went into combat, those in boot camp havent changed in the last 75 years. Talking to marines that went through boot camp in the 1940s to the same things i did nearly 60 years later and that surprised me. A lot of things changed but big things never do. Carley thank you for talking with us, we really appreciate it on such an important day. We have john roberts on the ground. What are you seeing in normandy . Reporter the president just landed in the black hawk helicopter version of marine one after the two ospreys carrying the staff in the principle landed ahead of it, the president and first lady will make their way to the main area where the president will be giving an address along with french president emmanuel mac n macron. Among the things the president will say is the exceptional mate came from an original spirit of the abundance of courage came from an abundance of faith. The great deeds of the army came from the great depth of their love. I have talked to people today who are the sons and daughters of people who thought on these beaches whether it be below us or the utah beach to the west. One fellow brought me a picture of his for a father, the first combat camera man to land on omaha beach. He had a photograph of Landing Craft as they were about to get off and disembark on the beach. The sense that these were young people, many of them 18, 19 years old, this was their first assignment out of boot camp. They knew as the president said when he was reciting the prayer Franklin Roosevelt gave on the eve of the dday invasion, they did not know if they were going to survive the hour and yet they were all out for getting on the beach, get to the high ground and complete the mission. 2400 servicemembers died on this beach in the first wave. When you think about it these are kids, 18, 19 years old fresh out of boot camp onto the beaches and all they had in mind was the mission. Some people who survived the dday invasion said that the weather was not particularly good that day, they were getting sick on those Landing Craft and all they wanted to do was get out of the Landing Craft and hit the beach. And get some solid ground underneath their feet. Regardless of the danger that face them or the death around them they were focused on the mission and we see that with members of the American Military today. Regardless what Service Organization they might be part of whether it is the army, the marines, the navy, the coast guard, the air force, people are mission focused, something a lot of americans do not relate to on a personal level, people in america are serving in the military and when you look at the overall number of people who are veterans on active duty, 7 of the American Population, 93 of the American Population does not have personal experience with what it is like to serve your country so this is a day on which we reflect on what the potential consequences could have been if this gone the other way. If you want an idea what could have happened had the invasion not gone the way it did there is a novel by Philip K Dick called the man in the high tower. They made a Television Series out of it and it is a realistic fiction of what would have happened to the United States had the nazis prevailed in europe and invaded america and japan had done the same thing in the west. When we look at the world we live in now we owe so much to those men who 5 and died on these shores of normandy 75 years ago. We are looking at donald trump and milania shaking hands. Before we toss it over to rob and julian you touched on something earlier. Couldnt putting the horror of war aside and the fact that so few members of Todays Society are members of the armed service, impossible for somebody who grew up in this day and age to understand what it was like for these men who quite frankly came out of the depression, not traveling on those planes, this was their first trip out of their states, going to a foreign land and having those doors open up and the horror that ensued. It is possible for any of us to fully understand what that moment and the fear leading up to that moment truly was. Reporter what you have to keep in mind, the wars we have been fighting these days are not accidental wars. The war against usama bin laden and al qaeda was an existential war because of the carnage we saw on 911 but the campaign in iraq and vietnam, those campaigns are not accidental campaigns but what was happening in world war ii with war raging in europe and across the pacific, those were accidental wars and the people who fight and died in those wars understood that if you were to lose that war it could be the end of your life as you know it. That is why the commitment by young people was so great. Carley we only have 50 seconds but an Important Message is the nation is so divided politically it is important we reflect on a moment like this on a day like today to remember that we are one united nation. We are. With our allies as well. There are differences of opinion from time to time but when you look at the potential threats arising around the world now we find ourselves in a similar position we found ourselves in 75 years ago. Perhaps not but depending on how things go one way or the other perhaps it is possible. We dont know. Keep that in mind which is why we need strong alliances. Todd thank you for joining us for the 4 00 am hour. The 5 00 hour, special fox and friends first, continues right now. Jillian good morning on june 6th, the 75th anniversary that we are honoring so many men who gave their lives. 4400 allied servicemen killed, half of them americans on this date in 1944. Rob the 75th anniversary of dday as we take a picture of a tremendously beautiful scene in northern france on the english channel, absolutely Beautiful Day but a somber event as we commemorate what happened on these beaches of northern france 75 years ago today. You will see a number of veterans in the crowd, still some alive though these men were born in the 1920s and it is 2019. A number of them will be there. French president Emmanuel Macron will give a speech to commemorate a special occasion. Jillian less than 500,000 of 15 million americans who served in world war ii alive as of late 2018. Rob the president arrived nearby where this ceremony will take place where thousands of americans who died in battles in france, the effort to take back europe from the nazis. It is supposed to be an absolutely remarkable powerful place to visit. A beautiful part of the world and very somber reminder of the sacrifice it took to keep europe free from horrible terror that
