Five people are dead. 24 have been shot and that includes three Police Officers and a 17monthold girl. It was 3 13 p. M. , state troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety pulled over a truck for failure to use a left turn signal. The driver slowed down, didnt stop and put a rifle out the window striking a texas state trooper. We have an active shooter. Negative. In a vehicle sphwhr what is the status of the trooper fnlt theyre working on the trooper right now. Shooter is in a toyota headed hd westbound towards 0 december ka. Odessa. He shot two more cop. He shot an inned on i20 and continued into east odessa. There was a lot of random gun fire there, multiple scenes of bloodshed. A lot of the bloodshed was along the highway. We adopt know the details of how he got out of his truck but he got out of his truck and got into a mail carry vehicle. He drove that vehicle to the Energy Center and thats where the gunman was shot and killed. Terrified witnesses watched it all unhold. Oh god. Theyre shooting right there. He hit the barrier. The cop just hit the barrier. Get down. Get down stand still. Hes shooting him. Hes shooting him. And among the victim as 17monthold girl. Witnesses say she was strapped into her car sheet and shot through the shoulder. That little girl was air lifted to the hospital in lubbock, texas. There are two different hospitals in the area. Ten at last count in critical condition. The gunman is a white male in his 30s. We dont have an id yet. Were expecting an update from the police at 9 30 local time. Mike live for us in odessa, texas. Back to Hurricane Dorian, the category 4 storm closing into the bahamas. Officials raising the alarm as the storm gets set to slam the island with high winds and a lifethreatening storm surge. Homes, structures can be replaced. Lives cannot be replaced. We have Team Coverage tracking the storms ever move. Jillian and griff are live on the ground in florida ap we begin with griff in jacksonville. Good morning. Theres real concern here that while dorian is 400 southeast of us in jacksonville, there could be a case that people get too comfortable coming out of the weekend thinking theyre out of harms danger. But theyre not indeed. The last time, three years ago when a hurricane doesnt make landfall in this area, it did cause over a Million People to lose power, lives lost and billions of dollars in property. Thats why twha theyre taking precautions hoop per at the hotel were taking up positioning. The sandbags are already being done. Just behind me theyre worried about the surge this could bring and that is why the mayor is saying you cannot get out of danger and think that youre going to be okay just because its not going to make landfall. Listen. A little bit of optimism that its not going to be the impact that we thought it was. But were asking people to remain vigilant, stay prepared and know their evacuation zone. Its important that people know exactly where their zone is so if we make the call they can act quickly. And it is mayor curry who remembers three years ago Hurricane Matthew never made landfall. It hit up above charleston, some 250 miles north of her but it caused tremendous damage because of the high surf and the winds. The st. Johns river runs through Downtown Jacksonville. Its up two feet because of the high tide. It is without a doubt youll have some damage from this storm here. And it is the concern of officials like sheriff Mike Williams that when they get in trouble and people may have been too lax in their preparations, that when they call no one with will be able to come get them. Heres the sheriff. Listen. One of the things that we tell people is that if you choose to state, theres a point in time during the storm where were not able to come. If you call 91 is we may not be able to respond because of the storm. So its not only that flooding thats almost certain in Downtown Jacksonville but also the ocean behind me, were going to get out here a little later and show you, the oceans surge, the waves. Remember when i was covering Hurricane Michael for you in the gulf, its very shallow in the gulf and the storm surge is a threat. In this case you have a cat 4 monster coming off of the coast that will cause millions in damage. I know youve done so many of the hurricanes and you get a sense of the feeling on the ground from the people you talk to whether youre getting lunch or just strolling the streets there. Do you get a sense that people are letting down their guard or are they maintaining the intensity that they need to until we know that this thing is completely passed . Ill answer that honestly. Im a little concerned that people are a little too comfortable. And the timing of the Holiday Weekend doesnt help. Remember, people thought they were going to have a labor day that was going to get ruined by a hurricane. Now theyre getting a forecast that would appear to be better. And thats why you had the mayor very cautiously optimistic that it would be better. But again, depending on how strong dorian remains after it pounds the bahamas in the next several hours and starts to work its way on the predicted track up north its going to cause problems. And once you get into trouble, theres going to be flooding. Youre at this high tide. Jacksonville and all the way down through West Palm Beach is going to see an impact even if it stays offshore. And it is not time to let your guard down. People were getting their last hours of sun ansurf and enjoying the end of the summer here. Last night we thought this was going to be upgraded to a cat 5 because the presentation of the satellite is incredible. Its textbook. Youve got a wideopen eye, all four quadrants are filled out with the higher cloud tops, the thunderstorms. A perfectlooking storm. And unfortunately its going to remain over the bahamas for days. I am really concerned with all of these beautiful beeche beach. The problem is, look at this. This is monday, so tomorrow, tuesday, not going very far, wednesday still not going very far. And if you have a job more to the west, then all of these properties along the coast of florida are going to be impacted by storm surge at least Tropical Storm force winds not for just hours but days. And we could be dealing with over a foot of rainfall depending on where the storm parks itself. The problem with the storm is we havent been very certain and that has not changed. A lot of people like to focus on the center of the storm but you can see the cone is very wide and it goes over land here. Thats why i need everyone to Pay Attention to the forecast not only because were not going to be dealing with a storm thats just going to impact for a matter of hours. This is sitting here for days. Were going to be talking about this thursday and friday and then we could potentially see a landfall or impact along georgia or the carolinas. This is a similar path to what mat theu took. Sometimes we have to go back in history and look at storms that were kind of identical in terms of where they were and the steering mechanisms that we have. We go with matthew as our guide and its very similar here. But again, dont focus on the center of the storm. Theres a reason why we have the cone of uncertainty. A jog more to the left of the cone is going to mean more devastating impacts for florida. The big takeaway is we have been uncertain with the storm for the last scup l o couples of days ae still uncertain. Well certainly keep you up to date over the next couple of days. But by removing the private option to say everyone is forced off of their private insurance and everyone force into the public option, i believe that would be a train wreck. It would take months for people to get service and it would affect quality of health care all the way around. And i dont think senator shandersanderhas ever had to de. His heart is in the right place but theres a way to do it with balance between the private and public sector. You would have to raise the taxes on the middle class. Hes been asked that question and he has to acknowledge that yes, thats the case. In regard to what youre saying, hes running against a businessman who has experienced all of the impact of this when hiring people, firing people when running a business. Is that problem for him . It should be. Democrats probably should speak more of the business side of things. They dont. I think thats the area they fail in. Thats where i lean a little bit more some of my conservative points of what it means to have a Small Business, sign the front of the check. Democrats does a great job when it comes to social issues but what does it mean for someone to stay in business, i lost my business due to health care reform. What that meant for me in my community, half of my employers were Second Chance citizens. That put a lot of people out of jobs in the community and those are the things that democrats fail on. Im hoping that Elizabeth Warren can have that conversation since shes the only one thats progressive and understands capitalism. Elizabeth warren seems to have a positive energy when shes on stage and yet is presenting many of the same policies might be an alternative that the democrats embrace fully right now. And the problem is not the absence of laws, its an absence of morality. Really the result of a decades long march through the institutions of america driving religion and god from the public square. Lets get into a little more on that. You have an oped on this. Topic trying to end gun violence. What do we need to do as a country . Todd, im willing as a former Police Officer and Ardent Supporter of the second amendment, im willing to sit down with the left who say i dont want a to hear more about your prayers. I agree. Until we get it settled, no matter how many laws we do, chicago has some of the most restrictive gun laws but yet we have a high surge of violence. That is because were lacking in morality. The lack of morality in america, the lack of forcing religion into the fringes and not being a part of our society has really caused us some serious issues. And that wall street journal survey that you point to does point to the fact that for several decades weve had the left making the systemic march through our institutions, mostly of education, driving religion out of the public life. People feel lucky that they had time to prepare and for the most part people seem like they are. Yesterday were were driving around the area, stopping at gas stations. We went to one of the places where people get their sandbags, there was literally no one there. I asked a Police Officer, where is everybody . Theyve been here and theyre gone. They are prepared and ready to go. It seems like thursday and friday were the busy days for people as far as preparations go and now its either people who are still here deciding if theyre going to leave, ride it out. But i heard griff mention earlier in the show that he feared that people were getting too comfortable and that also seems to be the consensus in this area. You know, i talked to rick, i talked to janice, and they said look, you still have to talk caution. This thing is fluid right now. Pay attention to the forecast and well keep you updailted. Updated. With that, lets goe deen. Youve been saying it. Dont let your guard down. The problem is the storm is going to move very slowly. Were going to still be talking about dorian through friday and its going to stall through the bahamas. Im very concerned with a highend category 4 moving through the bahamas and stalling out is going to cause major problems for not only the bahamas but along the coastline as well. The slow movement, youre going to see the push of the swell and the waves and the storm surge and potential for heavy rainfall and Tropical Storm force winds starting tomorrow for parts of florida. Look at the storm. Its incredible on satellite prespresentation. Thats about as as long as as you can get in terms of a hurricane moving through the bahamas. This is not a hurricane that lasts for 12 to 24 hours. Were going to be talking about dorian tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday still off the coast of the outer banks, according to this track. And you can see wasnt go further out in time, the cone of uncertainty gets wider and were still talking about a hurricane on friday. Even though the track is similar to what matthew did a couple of years back, the difference is this storm is going to be so slow. So thats going to be the problem. Beach erosion is going to be a big deal. We still could be dealing with a landfalling hurricane for parts of the carolinas thursday and friday. We get into day four and five, the uncertainty gets wider and you have a jog towards the west and then we could be talking about not just a brush but a scrape all along the coast of florida. Thats why people need to be listening to not only your local forecast but your local officials. Theyll tell you what to do. You can see we kne now have a fw models that bring it closer and make landfall across portions of florida. Thats what im concerned about further out in time. And because we are not quite sure of the steering as we go three, four, five days out. We have a rinl of High Pressure thats steering this right now. Thats going to break down. Thats why were going to see the slow movement of the storm. And when is the trough going to lift it northward into the carolinas. All of these are question marks. But we have consensus over the next 24 to 48 hours certainly if the storm moves a little closer to land were going to be talking about heavier rainfall totals, Tropical Storm force winds starting tomorrow moving up the coastline and then the storm surge depending on where you live. Theres the storm right now. Im so concerned with the bahamas because were dealing with a slowmoving almost category 5 storm that could devastate these areas. Compared to what President Trump has done in his first year of getting into office, he attacked those wait lists going from 611,000 veterans on those lists gown to 86,000 just in his first year. Now we have the Choice Program that gives veterans the opportunity, the choice to go outside of the va system to seek medical treatment if those wait lists are too long. Biden can try to retell history if he wants to but its going to be hard to convince people, specifically veterans that their lives have not been improved under this administration. It has to be getting out in front of something that would be a vulnerability for them. Their solution was stuck in the status quo. Spend more money at the va, things will get better. It didnt get better. President trump arrives, implements a Choice Program. When it comes to the debate you can put out an ad like this all you want. Yes. But veterans across this country, are they really going to say joe biden says a few nice things but what new yd ideas dos he have . Hes bouncing up against a man, President Trump, whos doing more than giving us platitude. Hes made real improvement. Weve talk about choice, attacking the wait list, we have the gi bill thats the forever gi bill. Hes advocated money to target veterans Mental Health, the psychological wounds that leave so many of our veterans, 22 commits suicide every day. Thats going to be hard to convince veterans that all of the sudden biden, who has over 40 years of history we can look at, is now suddenly or man. I mean this particular ad was very reminiscent of bidens campaign ad. He gave us no real reasons on why we should vote for biden except for some innocuous. There was nothing in there. Purple heart recipient, great guy, no doubt. He wa took om some photos. We have to expect more from our representatives. Regardless f how you feel about President Trump, hes done what he said he was going do. Hes made veterans a center piece of his administration. I mean he has created a whole new cabinet level just to focus on the Mental Health, those invisible wounds, the psychological traumas that our veterans are going through. And weve spent generations of politicians telling us that theyre going to fix the problem. Trump comes in, starts to address those issues with very real tangible solutions. Its going to be hard to convince us. Theres a lot more to address because the bureaucracy at the va loves to strangle good ideas. But ultimately introducing the idea of choice. Huge. Not radical for you and i but inside washington looks radical, has emboldened individual to say i can go somewhere to get the best care possible. Joe biden is on the. Sion the op sid sideof the spec. Ben carson say once before, do you think the government is getting into health care because they care about your health . And i often say being a veteran, have you look at any area in our government that is running in the black outside of the irs . Its very difficult to see that. And to give one of the most important aspects of our lives, our health to the government, one failed program after another, i think we need to think twice, especially when it comes to our promises to our veterans. Were safe and we sleep well at night because of what these people are sacrificing. And now we have a man in President Trump who is going beyond rhetoric. And they deserve the best health care in america regardless of a governmentrun facility or a private provider. Thank you. Had to say to a local affiliate saying that hernandez was previously arrested by immigration officials on march 30th, 2017, ordered removed by an immigration judge on april 3rd, 2017. On april 6 he was removed to his country of citizenship and reentered the United States some time thereafter. Each instance of criminality from someone who is here illegally and shielded by a sanctuary city is preventable. But when you see seven in one county arrested on Sexual Assault charges, youve got a problem. Hes accuseds of raping his stepdaughter. The executive order was signed last month in the county designating it a sanctuary jurisdiction and as we all know, that means that the police cant cooperate with i. C. E. So when you have police unable to cooperate with i. C. E. , this is what youre going to get. Youre going to get people who dont get properly deported, criminals, a lot of reentry that should never happen. Scary realities of look at the impact on people in this country. Following two breaking story this morning. Hanmandatory evac occasions seto take place as category 4 Hurricane Dorian is about to hit the coast of florida and up the coast as well. Obviously were following the situation in texas, five people dead following a shooting rampage there. Mike t tobin is live in odea florid0odessa, texas. You heard the politicians say before we cant accept this as a new normal but here we are one month since the el paso and data shootings. Its happened again. Here in texas. Five are dead, 24 have been shot, including three Police Officers and a 1 17monthold grirl. 3 18 p. M. In midland. Officers pulled over a vehicle for failure to use a left turn signal. The driver put a rifle in the window and opened fire shooting a texas state trooper. We have an active shooter. Negative. What is the status to have trooper . Tbsphwhr theyre working on a trooper right now. The rampage was on, speeding toward odessa. He shot two more Police Officers, he shot an individual on i20 and continued into east odessa. The gun fire took place at multiple scenes. We dont know the details of how he got out f h iz truck but he exited the vehicle and stole a postal truck. He drove from there and drove to the movie center where the suspect was shot and killed by Police Officers. Terrified witnesses watched it up fold. Theyre shooting right there. He hit the barrier. Get down get down get down stand still. Hes shooting him. Now that 17monthold, according to witnesses, was strapped into her car seat when he was shot through the shoulder. She has been air lifted to a hospital in lubbock, texas. Other victims at two different hospitals. Ten are in critical condition. The gunman is a white male in his 30s. Were waiting for an update from 0 bes so policOdessa Police in e hours. Durning back to Hurricane Dorian, the category 4 storm is closing in. The storm is set the slam the island with high wind and a lifethreatening storm surge. Homes, houses, structures can be released. Lives cannot be replaced. We have Team Coverage tracking the storms every move. Janice dean is tracking the hurricane right here in the studio. Julian mele and griff generas is live. Better forecast is providing cautious optimism here in jacksonville but its a threat of Tropical Storm force winds, high surf, unbelievable possible flooding that is going to impact the area in the next 48 hours. Now you asked me in the last hour if i was seeing people getting too comfortable. Let me show you exactly why the officials are worried so much about that and why i say that. This video shot here by the officials in jacksonville showing a hotel like ours being boarded up. But you pan to the pool and you see people enjoying labor day, the last day of summer. For those of us who remember the damage that hurricanes can bring, you see the unbelievable damage. Matthew did not make landfall here in jacksonville but hit some 250police miles up in South Carolina. It is the flooding that is already expected without a catastrophic cat 4 hurricane here in the jacksonville area because of the st. Johns river runs through this area already at epic levels because of the high tides. How close this comes is going to depend on how hard people get hit. Youve got to be ready when the worse possibly comes. Listen. Storm surge, wind speed, Tropical Storm winds sustains, but water has been a big event on our storms. When we evacuate folks they say is it the wind, the speed, the water, we dont know which event its going to be but when a major storm comes one of those is going to happen if not all. Heed our advice. If we say go, go. And as janice pointed out and local officials tell me, here theyre comparing this to matthew three years ago. It left people without power, people lost lives and there were billions of dollars of damage. At some point trouble is going to come here and people are going to have to be vigilant. Were heading down to janice dean to check in on the latest of the storm. Well get a new advisory at 8 a. M. And that there give us the coordinates. Look at the satellite presentation. Thats as perfect as you can get. The wide eye wur four quadrants filling out with the higher cloud tops. Thats as perfect as a hurricane can look on the satellite. We have a life webcam from the bahamas. The bahamas going to take a direct hit from this. Our shot is down but well bring it to you. My biggest concern is this storm stalling out over the bahamas as almost a category 5 storm. And the problem with this storm is its not just going to scoot up the coast in a matter of hours. Were going to be talking about this for days. Thats why im concerned. As you go out to wednesday, thursday and friday, our forecast gets even more uncertain. So thats why were saying, you know, if you live across florida, certainly if you look at the center of the cone it looks like its going to, you know, not see a hurricane. But if we get a jog 30 miles to the west, you certainly could be feeling Hurricane Force conditions not just for a matter of hours but days. Thats why im scrnd a this storm is going to slow down to about 5 miles an heu hour just f of the coast of florida. Weve got warm temperatures here. At least a cat 4 for the next several days. And again a jog to the west is going to make a big difference in the forecast. Thats why i want all of the folks along the east coast to remain vigilant. Listen to your local forecasters and officials. Hurricane force winds about 30 miles from the center of the storm. Thats why i say to you if theres a difference in the track and the center of the storm moving 30 miles, thats a difference between Tropical Storm winds and Hurricane Force winds. This is monday. Still stalled out here in the bahamas thats free port taking the brunt of the storm. Tuesday certainly Hurricane Force gusts brushing the coast. That is the forecast right now and thats why we have to wait for each forecast run from the National Hurricane center. Tropical storm force models here, were in good agreement monday and tuesday. But look, a little spread here in the reliable forecast model. Thats why im saying when we see the forecast models moving westward, thats why im a little concerned. And we could see a landfalling hurricane across the carolinas. This is one of our models, gfs model and the wors the worst ofe is staying off of the coast. But i cant stress this enough. Thats why we have to Pay Attention. I would love to say its going to skip the coast and nobody is going to worry about it but i cant. I want to make sure everybody is paying close attention. That track 50 miles inland is going to make a huge difference if it happens. It is amazing how slowly this thing is moving. That is the problem. I wish i could sigh a trough is going to pick this up and its out of here by monday. Were going to talk about this hurricane until friday off of the coast of the carolinas thats why im concerned with the slowmovement of the certain and its been very uncertain. Thank you very much. Were following two story this morning, obviously the hurricane. But that first story we did in texas in odessa, i dont know if we have the video, if we dont, no problem. What it takes for a Police Officer to do what that person did, to ram that vehicle if you watch it closely online, this officer gets out of his vehicle immediately and proactively approaches a vehicle which has killed five people wounded two dozen and he charges toward the vehicle. The amount of training and courage it takes for these men and women who wear the badge every day to do that is remarkable. And the mind et you have to be in to put everything aside and realize the task ahead and plow ahead. Were able to meet so many of these brave men and women on a daily basis. And to a man and a woman, most of them, if not all of them with willing to do what you just said. As we talk about those big stories, of course our country having big debates about who we are. Were debating what we are as well. Are we a republic, a democracy. If you tur turned it to another station recently, a host on msnbc talks about the pesky nature of our constitution. Take a listen. Theres a deeper philosophical thing about which is what american democracy is for. And the weirdest thing about the Electoral College is if it wasnt specifically in the constitution for the presidency, it would be unconstitutional. Yeah, the democrats have been bringing up the Electoral College for some time because they view it as an impediment to them winning elections. Actually the really key difference between democrats and republicans and that is actually in the words democrat and republican. What do i mean by that. Republicans defend the institutions of the republic and the democrats desire a more pure form of democracy. Why is that. Why do republicans want a republic. A republic is more stable and more representative of the entirety of the country. These smaller states have a voice. Democrats, they want something different. The problem with, you know, simple majority deciding how we live our lives in this country is it means tea tyranny of the majority. And that means a society that is divided, angry and pretty resentful. Howt an Electoral College you would have politicians campaigning to new york and california and ignoring so many states, so many of the issues vef prevalenprevalent and you wa tyranny where so much of america would be ignored and politicians would be, we dont have to Pay Attention to them. We can go to new york and california and bang this out. If they have to count on california and new york, home run. Chris hayes is not a dumb person. He understands what hes saying. Were not a democracy. Were a republic. The outside groups are called democracy now. Lets take a look at some drone video that was shot yesterday. A lot of homes and hotels are completely boarded up. Thats what the situation is looking like right now. On some Barrier Islands, in some spots you have water on both sides. People are complete by prepared for that. Hes bring in a resident. You are soaking up the sunrise because you know, youve sured viefd a lot of hurricanes here and this is going to change. It could change. How many murck hurricanes hau been through. Every one since 1994. And this one feels different . Mostly people i feel like people prepped early. The first day everybody was going out buying water, there was no water. And the next day theres water. The same thing. The generator, and then the gas cans arent in yet. You have a new item every day that you need to shop for but people prepped way earlier than normal. And we were driving around yesterday. It seems like a good amount of people have boarded up and left. Are you seeing that . On the beach side. But on the main land, youll see houses, some are boarded up, some not. Some of us are like, sit going to hit, is it not. Its hard to prepare for. As the meteorologist have been saying, this is not the time to let your guard down. This is a fluid situation. Its not about what i think. The mandatory evacuations were supposed to go into effect at 8 00 this morning. Thats been pushed back 24 hours. A lot of the hotels we were getting kicked out of our hotel as of 8 00 today but theyre letting people stay another day. People are in the process of im going to stay another day and then tomorrow were going to make the decision and most people weve talked to have said, at that point if we need to get out, were going to get out. Jillian, thanks. Lets go over to janice dean. Youve mentioned this all morning long. When you look at this storm, it is perfectly constructed but that means potentially bad things for those its going to affect. And the baj bahamas is realln the cross hairs of this hurricane. The best ive seen it look in a couple of days. So almost a category 5. Category 5 would be 156 Miles Per Hour and at this point it doesnt matter, 4 or 5. A strong 4 is going to plant itself in the bahamas. And the last cone of uncertainty at 8 a. M. , the models shifted more towards the west. Florida, you are not out of the woods even though this is looking like a close brush up the coast. The fact that this storm is moving still 8 Miles Per Hour and westward, when does it take the turn towards the north. We dont know that yet. And this storm has been very uncertain since weve been watching it over the last couple of days. I will tell you the east coast of florida you need to pay very close attention because now the models are shifting more to the west and a 30mile difference could mean Tropical Storm force winds or Hurricane Force winds for not just hours but days because the storm is going to slow down. When does it slow down and when does it take the jog to the north. We still cant give you a definitive outlook. Further in time into monday, tuesday and wednesday, still potentially dealing with Hurricane Force winds along the coast of florida, along with storm surge, along with heavy rainfall. So the bottom line is, as we go further out in time, sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, still dealing with a hurricane and still very uncertain. Thats why the cone is still moving on shore. I dont want people to Pay Attention to the center of the cone. The whole cone could mean potential of landfall of a close brush with a hurricane over the next couple of days. Friday still a hurricane off of the coast of the carolinas. Heres the gfs and european model. The two reliable models that we deal with although there are many that we look at in terms of making the cone. And you can see still so close to the coast. We could still be dealing with a landfalling hurricane perhaps for north florida, perhaps coastal georgia, perhaps for the carolinas. Steering, this is what has been really hard is that High Pressure thats guiding this westward. Still moving 8 Miles Per Hour pipts going to break down and thats when were going to see the slowdown. And when do we see the trough pick the storm up anmove it northward . So many question marks. Thats why this morning, you know, in terms of do we really know this forecast, id say we know it 24 hours out. But we dont know whats going to happen two, three, four, five days. Thats why we have a wide spread here. When we look at history, matthew comes close to the storm but every storm is different and we cant say this is going to be a matthewtype situation. But i use this as an historical guide. We cant let our forwar guard dn florida, georgia or the carolinas. This one we have to take seriously. Theres the rainfall euro model showing most of the rainfall offshore. But as we go through time, if we see more westward shifts, which we did last night, that whole cone is going to move to the left. And that means the potential, you know, from a Tropical Storm force wind to a Hurricane Force wind. Thats why, because of the uncertainty, i need people to stay alert, know your forecast and know what your local officials are saying because we still could see evacuation notices across the state of florida. Jedediah janice dean is tracking it. Janice, whats the latest . The latest is, yeah, up to a category 5. That is the highest on the saffe Saffer Simpson scale in terms of categories of storms. You dont see that very often, 160 mile per hour sustained winds, a perfect beast of a storm. That center of the storm is a perfect circle. Theres no cloud in the eye. And you can see all four quadrants of this storm are perfectly symmetrical. Very rare to see a category 5. It doesnt happen very often. And they have certainly upgraded it. The difference between a 164, 150, 160, not a big difference, but when you talk about how beautiful the storm looks on satellite presentation and how potentially deadly the storm will be for the bahamas. Prayers for the bahamas because this storm is going to slow down and when you have the worst possible hurricane, the worst possible storm on your doorstep just crawling along, that is going to be devastating for parts of the northwestern bahamas, unfortunately. Its terrible. The track hasnt changed much but i want to point your attention to the fact that the cone has moved a little bit westward. A lot of folks Pay Attention to the center. I dont want you to Pay Attention to the center. Because as we go further out in time there is a lot of uncertainty. Theres been a lot of uncertainty with this storm as soon as it formed. We didnt have a good indication of where the center of the storm was. We thought it was going to go over puerto rico. It went north of puerto rico. So i will tell you olive reliable forecast models that we look at, theres a lot of question marks. So i want everyone along the east coast of florida to pay close attention. This is not just an easy forecast. The fact that its going to slow down, when does it slow down . Were at 8 Miles Per Hour right now, barreling westward. When does it move northward . I cant really give you a good indication of that. So i need everyone to pay close attention as the storm continues to move westward. Its when its going to make that northward curve that we might be out of the woods. But because the storm is going to slow down and were talking about a hurricane for not just hours, but days, that is my concern. My concern is the computer models start going more westward and now that cone has shifted and we could be dealing with not just a Tropical Storm but a hurricane on board the east kose of florida. Big information mere category 5. Dont see it very often. Potentially devastating, deadly blow to the northwestern bahamas and the east coast of florida, georgia, carolinas, please Pay Attention. Were not doing this to hype. Were trying to save lives here. So well keep you posted. Pete janice, its so important to remember that, yes, you may be in a hurricane structure or a house thats graded for a hurricane. Not a lot of houses or structures are graded for a cat 5. Thats right, guys. As janice says, the concern is very real. What im trying to show you now is that while the storm for 500 miles of florida from miami to jacksonville, theyre already seeing high surf. Ive been out here on the beach in the last hour with the Jacksonville Beach ocean rescue, guys. Theyre putting the red flags up and theyre worried about the surf. This is dangerous rip currents. There are undertows here but yet people are trying to get the very last day of sunshine in the summer end. That is why the lifeguards are going to be up and down this beach encouraging people not to go into the water. That concern that people may have thought this better forecast is tracked that might have been offshore was going to let people put their guard down is a great concern of the officials. If you look at this video we got from the Communications Director of the e. O. C. Here in jackets you see them boarding up a hotel while at the same time panning over, you have vacation errand sitting by the pool. This is no time to not take this serious. And if youre out here today, the lifeguards want you to keep your children out of the water. It will be a day where they are very concerned about lifesaving. The mayor, minicurry, of jacksonville saying you cant control where this unpredictable storm is going, but you can control how you react. Listen. We cant control the storm. We cant control the impacts. We can control how we act and behave. Our city is prepared. We trained for this. We have professionals that train for this. Whatever happens, well get through it as a community. There will be less damage and more lives saved, all lives saved if everybody pays attention and acts accordingly and does what we ask them to do. So youre talking about high winds, youre talking about storm surge, youre talking about flooding, and youre talking about because it is an atlanta facing, very high and dangerous surf that will cause undoubtable sand erosion, property damage. A lot of people here look back to three years ago when matthew caused people to lose their lives, billions in damage, over a million lost power. So people are watching and waiting. But as janice says, and youre going to hear all day long, this is no time to let your guard down. And out here were going to try and speak with some of the ocean rescue guys. Ill say, can i talk to you, give us a little sound bite, a little short interview, they said maybe in a little bit but we are working right now to try and keep people out of the water cause the suns out but the danger is very high, guys. In texas five people are dead after a shooting rampage, terrifying video showing families ducking for cover as gunshots rang out. I got you. I got you. [kids crying] [sound of gunshots] [woman screaming] [sound of automatic fire] todd mike, good morning. Good morning. We just got an update from police. Among those five who are dead, that does include the gunman who was killed by police. You have four victims, one gunman who was killed by Police Officers. It all started with a traffic stop. Officers with their troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety pulled over a vehicle that failed to use a turn signal. At some point he put a rifle out the window and fired, striking one trooper. Then the rampage was on. The gunman sped off in the direction of odessa. He shot two more Police Officers one a midland Police Officer, another odessa Police Officer. Headed off i20 to east odessa, spraying bullets randomly, a bloody scene. Ultimately more than 21 people were shot, that includes three Police Officers and a 17month 17monthold who was shot through the shoulder while she was strapped into her car seat. At some point the gunman left his vehicle and stole a mail truck, he drove that to the nearby Movie Theater where police shot and killed him. Oh, god, theyre shooting right there. Oh, he hit the barrier the cop just hit the barrier get down, get down, get down. Get down, get down. Stand still. Hes shooting him. Hes shooting him. Almost immediately politicians started weighing in all agreeing that something needs to be done. No agreement on what. The president and i and our administration remain absolutely determined to work with leaders in both parties in the congress so we can address and confront this scourge of mass atrocities. And the last report we got from the hospitals, ten victims are in critical condition. The gunman is only described as a white male in his thirties. We are waiting on a identification from police. That update we are expecting from Odessa Police has now been moved from 9 30 local time to noon local time. Guys, back to you in new york. Todd mike tobin live for us in odessa. Its an average day in midland or odessa, and that last piece of video we showed when they ultimately confronted the gunman who stole a mail truck, if we can show it, if you look at it closely, you cant really see it on our screen, but these officers if we drop the banner, these officers jump out of their vehicle i mean, as quick as you can imagine, and run toward this guy who presumably has a highpowered rifle, in order to neutralize the threat after with so much uncertainty, that video right there, god bless the people that put on the uniform every day, they dont know if theyre going home and in this case theyve got a mass shooter on their hands. And rather than cower, they run toward the bullets. Jedediah yep. Pete what it takes to do that is the ultimate in human courage and service to your community. Jedediah and what it takes to just be a good Law Enforcement official, to be able to put yourself completely aside. They know theyre in harms way. They know that anything could happen to them. They could lose their lives in that moment multiply but their priority is not themselves. Their priority is helping other people, making sure the person that could potentially be a hazard isnt a hazard to other people. So we owe them an incredible amount of respect in addition to all the Health Care Professionals that work at these hospitals that when these victims come through the door are faced with enormous challenges to act very quickly, to save as many lives as possible, to care for the injured. I mean, what these people are doing on the ground in instances like this true awe inspiring, their courage and their ability to just handle these High Pressure situations with such reverence. Todd but its not just putting themselves in harms way, guys. Its that next step that weve seen over the course of the last couple years, which is this vilification of police as a whole throughout our country. That needs to stop. Every single profession has bad apples, and, yes, those bad apples are the ones that make the news. But when you see scenes like this as pete mentioned, self selflessly getting out of their vehicles, running into what is an unknown situation. They didnt know if it was one or two shooters. They did not know what was going on, they just knew they had to help their fellow men and women in this area and children. Thats what they did. Thats why we need to stop the vilification that we are seeing throughout our country. Pete yeah, approximately i would modify it to four killed and one dirt bag killed by police, thankfully, because they took action that almost nobody else would take in that moment, charging toward the gunfire. We think of all the people in texas this morning for sure. To another topic that caught our eye, a lot of news today. Were going to try to fit this one in as well. Former Vice President joe biden released a campaign ad yesterday from a veteran. Well play it and get some reaction. Veterans, you need to check out peoples credentials. You need to check out their voting records. Vote for people who vote for veterans. Veterans, you know, especially wounded veterans should be able to get health care and the best health care. In the situation were in right now, we need a man like joe biden. I think he can fix our problems. Pete so god bless this vet whos given to this country, but when this vet says get the best health care possible . Joe biden and barack obama had that chance. Joe bidens had that chance for 40 years. They invested in a failed bureaucratic v. A. System that trapped veterans and stuck them on wait lists. Without trump who brought real choice for veterans to get the best health care possible. So good luck on a debate stage debating trump. Ads like that, you know, its the same platitudes and promises weve heard all along without results. President trump is actually delivered them. You can talk as much as you people you want, put as many ads out, likable people are going to have more hardearned cash, but if the policies arent going to help them, theyre going to sit with the reality of that situation. They always stop me and say thanks for the health care, thanks for whats going on at the v. A. Because the vets know its not about the system, its about the veteran. They choose their health care option. Its not perfect, but its on the track of that in spite of what obama and biden did for many years. What does it take for officers to confront a shooter in a situation like that . First of all, let me say this this. When you listen to this tape and the horror and the screams and the human response will be to escape, get to safety, protect yourself, but these men and women of Law Enforcement, theyre running toward this. While everybody else is running away, theyre running toward it. Theyre running toward a man that wants to kill them, theyre running toward the bullets. You know, i keep a good story on this, its tragic, the men and women of Law Enforcement, how brave they are, how they put their safety and security at risk. Every day they leave the safety of their home to protect the country. I agree with the comments on vilification. Ive never seen the vilification against Law Enforcement ive seen this past year. So i hope america is Pay Attention, these men and women need your support. They talk about Aggressive Police and aggressive tactics and creating review boards. Well, this is where i get angry because ive been talking about this same county, this same executive, ellrich for i think four weeks in a row now because every week theres another case of a small child thats being sexually assaulted by somebody thats not even supposed to be here. At what point does he get ashamed of himself and put his politics aside and protect his community . Because these sanctuary cities love to say, we have sanctuary city policies, we want to protect the immigrant community, we want victims and witnesses of the crime to come forward and please be afraid to turn them over to i. C. E. First, i. C. E. Doesnt arrest witnesses. Second of all, tell me how this community has protected the immigrant community. When you release an immigrant back into the community, theyre going to continue to do the same crimes in their own community, the immigrant community. Some little child had never be the same because this guy was offered sanctuary, for criminals criminals. Not for american citizens, a sanctuary for criminals. At what point do taxpayers and voters in Montgomery County stand up and say enough . So youre here in studio and along with you, emma cause youre both at west point which is not far from here. Josh, you have not seen your brother, your brothers jacob; right . It is, sir. Pete hes is he naval academy. Is that the first time youve seen him since you decided to go to Different Service academies . It is, yeah. Pete and youve just finished your basic training. Youre both freshmen, all of you are freshmen. What was it like for you to be away from your brother all that time . Before i came to west point the longest i was away from the him was 12 hours so it was quite the adjustment but i think it was for the best because west point has helped develop me both mentally and physica. Ly pete jacob, you know, your brother, 12 hours was your previous separation. Since then youve been through a whole summer of training. First of all, why did you decide to join the navy and whats it like to see your brother . Originally we were both planning on going to west point because thats what our physics teacher, she was her son went there so she was telling us like yeah, you should go there, pretty neat to go. And so but then just the way things worked out, i decided goy the in the navy, he got into west point, we decided it would be best for us to go our separate ways because it was either now or four years that we would split up. You guys are identical twins. I can see it. Aubrey, let me go to denver to aubrey from the air force academy. We wish you could be here in in person but you can see your sister from afar. Yes,. Ir, pete first of all, your decision to join the air force and be away from your sister. Yes, sir. So i really loved the academy whenever i came and has so many amazing opportunities and it has really propelled me and basic training taught me so much and im so grateful for it. I love being here. Pete she loves being there. Emma, how do you like west point point . Talk about that a little bit and then, you know, its the same question but its worth asking because these are a human dynamics, youve been so close to your sister for so long you made the decision to be a different place. Right. I absolutely love it at west point. Its become my new home for sure sure. Kind of was forced to make it my home because of basic training. Its been awesome, a great adjustment. For aubrey and i we were the longest weve been apart is a little bit longer than them, like five days, and now its been almost three months. Pete emma and aubrey, have you communicated, letters, what can do you in basic training . During basic training weve had 20 plus letters and we were there for like 40 days. Pete what was the biggest grievance either of you had . What was the toughest part . You go from being together in high school to into basic training in the toughest military in the world. What was the most difficult part of the transition for either of you . I guess for both of us it was really weird not being known as the twins. Right. I guess we probably used that as a fun fact for a long time that we were twins, and its weird not having someone to finish your sentences. We always used to finish each others sentences and like occasionally ill pause and shes not there to finish any sentences so its kind of sad. Pete let me bring you back into the studio, emma and josh, two different sets of twins, one from california, one from texas, now youre both freshmen at west point. Did you know of each others stories . Did you discover it at some point . So, no, i hadnt known about his story until aubrey sent me something on twitter. She sent me a direct message of his story like your dad posted, i think. Y. Ah, and i was like that is the coolest things so i found him on global, which is the army connection. And i found him, and i was like, hey, my name is emma, im a twin too. I wanted to meet you. Pete josh, you thought you were the only one out there, but no. Yeah, for me about a week ago i was just like, you know, just like kind of minding my business at west point and someone sent me this article, hey, theres this other set of twins, im like, oh, what . Like from there this is kind of like, it was just like so crazy, just like knowing that there was another set of twins almost the same, like, situation. Pete jacob, you and josh, did you write as many letters to each other . Have you been in touch . Yeah. So whenever time allowed over the summer, i would make sure id write him a letter just to see how he was doing and that was always the best part of my day, when i would get mail and id see, its from joshua lowe. That was definitely like that really got me through the summe. Pete i remember my infantry officer basic training when you got the letters it was always a boost in morale to hear from anybody let alone your twin sibling. We have another round here. Mandatory evacuations on the Barrier Islands going into effect at eight oclock tomorrow morning. As far as the airports go in this area the Orlando International airport is going to be Running Services on monday but this is kind of a waitand waitandsee kind of game. They are going to be monitoring that storm to give you the latest information. But for now that is the information we have. Lets talk about shelters. Lets bring in anthony tornada from the american red cross. Its a cat 5. This thing just got upgraded in the last half hour. Its about to hits the bahamas. All up and down the coast; right . Its a big deal. We have team members in the bahamas, through florida, north and South Carolina, this is not a we shall see approach. If youre forced to evacuate, you need to go now. You were just talking to a couple folks on the boardwalk now and you said now they have decided it is time to board up and go. Yeah, weve had people that are already prepared and have evacuation plans to people who are just now getting plywood and boarding up their homes. And the fact that this was just upgraded to a cat 5 i think is going to change the minds of a lot of people in these communities. Absolutely. I think theres more sense of urgency so we want people to be safe. Also you were in katrina. Talk about your experience and how it is important to not mess around. The fact that it has been upgraded to a category 5 im sure has everyones attention and i will tell you this part of the bahamas has never had a category 5 on top of them. Were talking about 20foot storm surge, 30 inches of rain, at least a category 3 or major hurricane with battering winds for not just hours, but days. The storm is going to slow down. And the satellite presentation is incredible. This is a storm not to be messed with, and obviously our forecast as we go further out in time gets a little bit more uncertain uncertain. So the east coast of florida, youre not out of the woods here here. And i can show you, look at the radar. Already were seeing that eye moving towards the northwestern bahamas. Prayers for the bahamas. They have never experienced Something Like this. Andrew came close in the nineties. Theres the latest track. And dont look at the center of the cone. Look at the whole cone. And that means that the east coast of florida, the coast of the carolinas and georgia could be dealing with a brush or a landfall. And thats why we have to pay close attention. Jedediah and in texas, a traffic stop turns into a shooting rampage. Todd mike tobin live for us in odessa, texas, with a new update. Reporter of the five dead, four are victims, one is the gunman who was shot and killed by police. It all started with a traffic stop. Texas state troopers pulled over a car for failure to use a turn signal. At some point he pointed a rifle out of one of the cars and shot one of the texas state troopers, wounding him. Then the chase was on. He took off driving, shot two more Police Officer, one a midland Police Officer, one an odessa Police Officer. We reached east odessa and started firing randomly, spraying bullets, creating a number of different crime scenes. Ultimately, more than 21 people were shot, 3 of them Police Officers, one a 17monthold, she has been airlifted to lubbock. At some point he stole a mail truck, drove that to synergy Movie Theater where police shot and killed him. Theyre shooting right there. Oh, he hit the barrier the cop just hit the barrier get down, get down. Get down. Stand still. Hes shooting them, hes shooting them. Its that kind of confusion that Law Enforcement officers are dealing with in the moment x then the actual moment of confronting a shooter face to face or vehicle to vehicle as some of that powerful footage shows, we had tom hohmann on, he was a former Police Officer, and he talked about what our men and women in uniform do in these moments. When you listen to horror and the screams, the human response to escape, get to safety, protect yourself. But these men and women in Law Enforcement, theyre running toward this. While everybody else is running away, theyre running toward a man who wants to kale them. This is a tragedy, of course, but it once again shows the men and women of Law Enforcement, how brave they are, and how they put their own safety at risk every day. Pete yep. I mean, this started as a routine traffic stop. Then those officers are shot at, ultimately in that video weve shown, an officer to ram or chose off that vehicle and then get out of the vehicle and with a handgun, effectively charge towards the shooter . Pete what it takes to train that and make that decision, literally to open your door and get out of your vehicle, outside of cover and confront an active shooter whos already killed people . That is the definition of courage. Jedediah completely selfless. Its just taking yourself out of it, not thinking about your own safety and saying i have a job to do, this is what i was hired to do, to go and protect people and to make sure that any threat thats menacing is minimized and that no other people get hurt, and thats how they reacted. I would not be able to do what these people do every day. I have such an amount of respect for them. Todd we have such a monday morning quarterback society where everybody feels they have a right to comment on everything including these split second decisions. Unless youve been trained and have been in that kind of a situation, you have no idea how you would respond. So dont judge others that are in that situation. Pete yeah. Listen, as you mentioned before, there are good actors, there are bad actors in any profession. But as we put more statute9ny on Law Enforcement officers, should you have done this, in a moment like this, youre trying to keep people in the community safe. Youre trying to protect yourself. These guys have families and wives and kids and children and husbands, but at the same time theyve got a duty that compels them to charge toward the sound of those guns. For 500 miles of the florida coast all the way up here, they are experiencing large surf already ahead of this monster storm. I want to bring in lieutenant mike atkins, hes in charge of the jacksonville rescue. You got the news that its a cat five, very unpredictable. Your reaction. Yeah. I mean, the storm seems to be changing constantly, so were just doing what we can to be as prepared as possible. You always wallet to be prepared in advance, you dont want to be doing last minute preparation. Reporter now, earlier we were talking, and these conditions already were seeing high surf. Its a gorgeous day, people are going to be out here, how concerned are you about people being in the water on a day like this . Is. We are quite concerned. It is a nice day which will still bring people to the beach. Its the labor day weekend, so theyre going to want to be here. We are understaffed at the moment, so we have to stress for people the stay in front of a lifeguard if you decide to go into the water. Personally, we are recommending you dont go into the water. We have strong rip currents and large surf, very Shallow Water can knock you off of your feet. Reporter if you look, you can see its a little bright out here from the glare still the, but brian can kind of show you all were seeing out here at the moment guys are a few surfers. Presumably, theyre a little more comfortable, but youre flying the red flag for a serious reason, and knotts going to get any its not going to get any better. Reporter were here in jacksonville, but as weve been reporting on this storm, particularly if it tracks parallel which you guys saw with matthew a year ago, the danger is quite high everywhere along this stretch from miami up to here. Oh, yeah. And matthew only went past us as a category one. Its a little bit farther away, but it still could be just as impactful, if not more. Reporter were going to continue on this patrol and, guys, i can tell you the other concern from officials is as news changes, that you will get a massive evacuation. Jacksonvilles on the northern end of it. One woman told me she was caught when she tried to get out of irma for 16 hours in traffic. Jedediah wow. Reporter yeah, very concerning, obviously, with this storm system as it continues to barrel westward at around 8 miles an hour. When does it slow down and make no northerly that northerly turn. The northwestern bahamas has never encountered a storm of this magnitude moving through these islands, so prayers out. They are going to be dealing with storm surge of 20 feet, upwards of 20 feet, up to 30 inches of rain and battering major Hurricane Force winds not only for hours, but for dayings. Look at our cone of uncertainty. This is monday, this is tuesday. Hasnt budged much. Heading into wednesday and thursday, and i dont want to Pay Attention here to center of this storm system, i want you to a Pay Attention to the whole cone. Thats why we call it the cone of uncertainty, and this storm is very uncertain, especially as we go through day two, three, four and five. We have a lot of debate in this country about who we are and what we believe in our constitution, theres also a lot of frustration, especially on the left, about the fact that President Trump won visavis the Electoral College and not the popular vote. Rather than go to wisconsin and just win on their the own merits, a lot of people on the left are going after the very system enshrined in our constitution. But going a little further if you watch another host from another network making an argument about the constitution not being constitutional, except its in the constitution. [laughter] well, give it a try. I think theres actually a deeper philosophical thing happening which is the question of what exactly american democracys for, and the weirdest thing about the Electoral College is the fact that if it wasnt specifically in the constitution for the presidency, it would be unconstitutional. Jedediah what is that point even . So ridiculous, i mean, you cant help but laugh. Representative dan crenshaw, republican from texas, stepped in and talked about why we need the Electoral College. Actually a really key difference between democrats and republicans, and that is actually literally in the word democrat and republican. What do i mean by that . I mean that republicans defend the institutions of the republic, and democrats desire a more pure form of democracy. Why is that . Okay, why do republicans want a republic . Well, a republic is stable and more representative of the entirety of the country. Smaller states have a voice. Democrats, well, they want something different. The problem with, you know, a simple majority deciding how we live our lives in this country is that it effectively means tyranny is the majority. And that means a society that is divided, angry and pretty resentful. Jedediah thats what they want, they want tyranny of the majority because they dont want you know, the Electoral College guarantees that those smaller states have a voice, it guarantees whoevers running for president needs to Pay Attention to them, needs to cam patienting needs to listen to their campaign and spread themselves throughout the entire United States of america. You abolish that Electoral College, they could hit the big states and ignore everyone in the center of the country completely and still get away with a win. Whats interesting the point you made before, its hitting the nail on the head. Democrats feel they cant win the election with the current system. Why not do what Hillary Clinton didnt do and go to those states where they feel completely ignored, make your case and win that election . Why dismantle an entire system and empower certain states over others in order to achieve your goal . Thats an admission that you cant win the right way. Todd absolutely. And the reason this republic has sustained itself, because our finders were wise men who were students of history, that understood that tyranny didnt just come in the form of autocrats and dictators. It could come in the form of pure democracies where the majority decided to impose its will on a minority. And without a republic, you dont protect those minorities in a way that all rights which are endowed by god, not by government, are enshrined to people. Liberals forget that the statements created the federal government, not the other way around. The tenth amendment says right powers not delegated by the constitution to the federal government belong to the states and to the people. And if youre a leftwinger, you use the word democracy intentionally. Chris hayes is not a dumb guy. He says american democracy, leftwing groups call themselves democracy now because they want to get away from the systems that they believe stop them from transforming our republic into something that looks like socialism, something that looks like total governmental control, which is what they want. Our founders stand to thwart that, resisting. That they knew men like this would come around. People were considered second class citizens and worse, slaves. We fought that civil war to fulfill the ideals of our founding. It was right around christmas time, and we had an illegal alien who took multiple weapons and drove around in a 20mile radius, shot five different people. I mean, this is something that happened that, you know, it was a modernday car chase with bullets flying everywhere, and, you know, no one really covered it at the time. So it always seems like if its someone thats an illegal alien, that Mainstream Media doesnt want to cover it. However, you know, when theres other issues, Mental Health issues, homeless issues, the media also seems to be missing in action in that too. Waking up this morning realizing this storm has been upgraded to a category five. The surf has gotten rougher the last couple of hour this is, people weve talked to say its rougher than yesterday, and its only going to get worse. Some people have been boarded up for days, take a look at this video of a couple that were ready to go. They were still moving stuff inside that could be debris when we see those heavy winds. Tomorrows Orlando International airport still going to have flights through monday, thats the latest information, but as you guys know, everybody is closely watching to see where this goes because its still a changing storm. Todd you are right, it is changing. For more on that, lets go over to janice. Each storm sort of has a signature whether its rain, or whether its storm surge. For this ive never in my life seen winds this strong as predicted on your maps. Reporter so the hurricane, the Hurricane Hunters are dropping instruments into the hurricane, we saw pictures just earlier of them flying into the center of the storm, the eye, and they have come back with new data. The winds are now up to 175 from 160. So all i can say is thats devastating for the northwestern bahamas. That is potentially deadly. 175 mileperhour sustained winds in the core, the center of that storm, and Hurricane Force winds extend about 30 miles from the center of that storm. Is so anyone in the path of the core of the strockest wind, that is strongest wind, that is going to take buildings down. Thats going to kill people, unfortunately. So i am so concerned with the northwestern bahamas. Theyve never, ever experienced Something Like this before. So, obviously, every single measurement, every track, every computer model is so important. Were going into uncharted territory now, and im concerned that the east coast of florida need to be paying very close attention because this storm is, has got to pull northward with. When is it going to do that . And were going to be dealing with a storm not only for hours, but days. So i am so concerned now with this latest information not only for the bahamas, but for the east coast of florida. Everyone, everyone, Everyone Needs to Pay Attention to your forecast and your local officials. We could easily be dealing with evacuations now if the track moves more westward. I am so concerned, i mean, i have, like, sick to my stomach reporting this information. [inaudible] jedediah acting deputy administrator of fema, doctor, welcome to the show. Can you talk to us a little bit about the role of fema when dealing with a storm of this magnitude that seems to be growing and increasingly terrifying . Well, first of all, this is the an incredibly dangerous storm as you saw, incredibly strong winds and a very large storm thats going to have a dramatic impact on whatever it hits. Even though there are areas that are not directly impacted, even if it doesnt come ashore, the amount of wind and water that is coming along with this storm will cause incredible storm surge and other impacts. So Everyone Needs to remain vigilant and prepared for any eventuality. Pete doctor, so at this moment, as fema, what are you preparing for the most . So we are deploying assets all the way up and down the east coast at this point, no longer just focused on florida. All the way up to North Carolina at this point. Were following the potential track of that storm. So thats equipment, thats personnel, thats commodities all staged in key areas up and down the east coast. Itd itd doctor, as we continue to get these updates and these updates continue to change, how do you alter your plan of attack in terms of allocation of resources . Because, yes, you said you do have things allocated, but at some point one area is going to need more help than another, and you want to deal with it quickly. How do you deal with the moving target . Is. Right. Well, the best we can do is have staging areas in key locations across the east coast. They will be ready to surge in as soon as we have any kind of impact. That said, we can also redeploy assets. Lets say it hits one state and not another, those assets can be immediately redeployed to the areas hardest hit.
