Since then weve had repatriation agreements with Central American countries which really helped return people that dont have asylum claim back to their home country in very, very short period of time. And mexico for a moment because youre crediting that in part and i seem to remember the president s critics when he sealed the deal with mexico, this is a bandaid, he is doing a pr thing, it will not really matter but my understanding looking at the stats, 53,000 migrants have been returned back across the border. You have other numbers there, a 70 drop from may in terms of apprehensions that is separate statistics. This deal with mexico was laughed at. Youre saying it is working . It is working because what it is doing, those that truly have an asylum claim, they can still get that claim processed but those that are not, those just trying to come into the country illegally are able to be returned and mexico being willing to help us buffer that, that surge, it was really where were able to use a lot of the capacity we have in country but also utilize what is available in mexico. The rabbi spoke about what happened last night which is, much of what has been reported in the press. Important for me to express to the rabbi and to all the people of the state of new york that this is intolerance meets ignorance, meets illegality. This is an intolerant time in this country. We see anger. We see hatred exploding. It is a, an american cancer in the body politic. It literally one turns one cell in the body against others, and we have seen it here in the state of new york. This is about the 13th incident of antisemitism just the past few weeks. Comes during a period of high holidays for the jewish people. Governor cuomo calling it an act of domestic terrorism. Pete well get to that jackie Jacqui Heinrich joins us from outside the home where the governor addressed the attack. Jackie good morning. Reporter yeah, you heard the governor speaking very very plainly, saying that this, these people are motivated by hate, and are trying to inflict fear and said lets call it what it is an act of domestic terrorism and also commented on the 13 incidents around the state in recent weeks saying that those incidents were hate crimes and domestic terrorism. At least 60 worshipers were inside the home of this rabbi during a hanukkah celebration where people were lighting candles on the seventh night of hanukkah and witnesses say a man with his face covered came to the door, pulled out a machete from some sort of a case, storm ed into the home and started hacking at people. At least five were wounded two of them critically one person reportedly stabbed six times worshipers threw tables and chairs at that man to try to get him to leave and at least one man chased that suspect before he fled in his car. This is an intolerance, meets ignorance, and this is violence spurred by hate, it is Mass Violence and i consider this an act of domestic terrorism. Reporter the nypd caught up to that suspect in new york city as the rabbi who survived the attack gathered with his worship ers about an hour later praying about gods mercy and grace. Its the Second Attack on jewish people in this town, since november when a man was beaten and stabbed as he walked into a synagogue and the latest in a series of attackings in just the last week and brooklyn alone was confirming eight possible hate crimes including an incident on Christmas Day when a man in traditional clothing was punched in a face and another where a jewish woman walking with a child was hit in the bed with a bag and earlier this month four people were killed in the massacre at a Kosher Grocery store in jersey city. This was a machete used in theue ago that one of the victims was stabbed in the head. One of the victims thats in Critical Condition, stabbed in the head with a machete during hanukkah simply because youre jewish. Think about the broader context of at least eight attacks in the new york city area in the last week, and most of those suspects in those cases have been released back in the streets. Im only aware of one thats been held in custody, because that person assaulted someone and they were injured so if the person gets injured you cant get out on bail but because of a socalled bail reform law, thats already taking effect now , here in new york city, if you, someone is not interested you hit them in the head with a bag and technically they dont break a bone you can be released on bail and so i just had a fewer send in a note. Governor cuomo called these various assailants around new york city domestic terrorists, so is mayor bill deblasio now releasing through this bail reform domestic terrorists . Thats what the governor just said that these are domestic terrorists. Pete absolutely so you heard what Governor Cuomo said which which will be utterly unsatisfying to the jewish communication, they talk about hate and no actual identification of where the hate was coming from.
