Lets get real clear on what were talking about here, what were talking about here is that the president of the United States used taxpayerfunded military assistance to pressure a foreign leader to help him in his reelection campaign. Jon we have Fox News Team coverage. Kevin cork is standing by with the latest from the white house. But first we go to Mark Meredith who is live in our d. C. Bureau. Mark . Good evening, jon. The House Intelligence Committee will resume the impeachment inquiry hearings on tuesday. Lawmakers have scheduled eight witnesses to testify this week alone. The committee will first hear from jennifer williams. Shes a state department advisor, assigned to the Vice President. Followed by testimony from alexander veneman, a ukrainian expert from the National Security council and former special envoy to the ukraine and former National Security official, but many here in washington are eagerly awaiting to hear from Gordon Sondland, scheduled to testify wednesday morning. Hes the ambassador to the European Union and is believed to have had multiple interactions with President Trump about ukraine. This is the first time by the way that you have direct testimony of someone speaking to the president and relating what the president has said and what he says directly contradicts these statements that are largely hearsay. I think hes got to decide this weekend whether hes an american first or a trump loyalist. Im not sure we can trust his testimony given the fact we know its already changed. House leaders say no matter what sondland says the process of the impeachment inquiry is tainted because g. O. P. Lawmakers have not been allowed to call the witnesses that they would like to have testify. There are a lot of people who work in the Trump Administration who have very countering views to that, and theyve not been allowed to come forward, so some people can say one thing about a thirdhand information phone call. Theres Something Else that other people can counter that with and they havent been allowed to come forward. Some g. O. P. Lawmakers continue to demand that the whistleblower, who first raised concerns about the president s call with ukraines leader come forward and testify, but right now there are no signs thats going to happen. Instead House Speaker pelosi is inviting President Trump to testify. She spoke with cbss face the nation. What the president did was so much worse than even what Richard Nixon did. But at some point Richard Nixon cared about the country enough to recognize that this could not continue. Speaker pelosi went on to say she doesnt know how long the impeachment inquiry may last, and that its up to certain key house committees to decide that factor. Jon . Jon Mark Meredith in washington, thank you. President trump calls the impeachment investigation a sham, in a series of tweets today, his administration is defending the president s controversial comments during fridays hearing, saying he was not trying to intimidate Marie Yovanovitch when he tweeted negatively about her during her testimony. That tweet was the president s opinion, which he has a right to have. He was expressing why he didnt have faith in yovanovitch. He deserves to have people he believes in. He was going around the dems on his twitter which is always so good at doing and thats what made them angry. Jon Fox Team Coverage continues now with kevin cork who is at the white house. Kevin . Good evening. The president s tweet at the former ambassador to ukraine clearly created waves if you will of emotion on capitol hill including some howls of witness intimidation but here at the white house barely a ripple of reaction. Let me share part of a statement of stephanie grisham. She says the tweet was not witness intimidation. It was simply the president s opinion which he is entitled to. This is not a trial. It is a partisan political process. Or to put it more accurately a totally illegitimate charade stacked against president , less due process in this hearing than any such event in the history of our country, it is a true disgrace. The thinking jon goes this way the president like any other citizen can say what he wants. He has his own opinion even if it means criticizing someone who used to work for him. But democrats including some on the Intel Committee say it was completely out of bounds effectively saying you can add that to the long list of impeachable offenses committed by the president including accusations of bribery in exchange for military aid. In fact, new york senator schumer says that the president doesnt like the process, he can always come and testify himself. If donald trump doesnt agree with what hes hearing, doesnt like what hes hearing, he shouldnt tweet. He should come to the committee and testify under oath, and he should allow all those around him to come to the committee and testify under oath. Senate minority leader schumer right there. Meanwhile, the president is reminding republicans and others what he says actually transpired. He tweeted this, republicans and others must remember the ukrainian president and foreign minister both said there was no pressure placed on them whatsoever. Also they didnt even know the money wasnt paid and got the money with no conditions. Why isnt germany, france, europe, paying . So while the back and forth continues, jon, do note the white houses insistence that the process is flawed and unfair especially given schiff a critic of the president is rupping the show. Is running the show. It was schiffs insistence interrupting a congresswoman last week that drew the ire on many on capitol hill and played out poorly in some political circles. The president calling her out on twitter, a rising star. Jon . Jon kevin cork at the white house. It goes on, thank you. Violence is escalating in hong kong now. Reports of fiery explosions as police there storm a university occupied by protesters after an all night stand off. This after clashes that saw one officer hit in the leg with an arrow. Meanwhile, u. S. Officials say they are not ruling out possible intervention. Garrett tenney explains. The protesters in hong kong u. S. Lawmakers are concerned about the chinese governments increasing control over the territorys autonomy. In response a group of bipartisan senators are proposing a bill that would force the u. S. To conduct an annual review of hong kongs special status which allows it to be treated differently than Mainland China particularly when it comes to trade and business deals. The bill would also force the president to impose sanctions against those who are responsible for eroding freedoms in hong kong. This comes after some of the most violent clashes weve seen in the more than five months of protests there, with pro democracy protesters using bows and arrows and molotov cocktails against police, while barricading themselves inside several university buildings. This week senator marco rubio said the world witnesses the people of hong kong standing up every day to defend their long cherished freedoms against an increasingly aggressive beijing and hong kong government. Now more than ever the United States must send a clear message to beijing that the free world stands with hong kongers and their struggle. The house unanimously passed a similar version of the bill last month, but it is not clear if President Trump will support it, given that it could further complication the ongoing complicate the ongoing trade negotiations with china. Chinese state media has slammed the congressional efforts as arrogant and dangerous. This week the chief of staff to Vice President pence said the u. S. Is closely watching how china responds to the hong kong protests as well. We agree that they need to make sure that that is the agreement they signed with the brits is maintained and protected. I think thats an indication as to how they will conduct other agreements across the globe in other trade deals and other agreements. Senator rubio said his bill could pass as early as this next week and its helpful he has the k bah backing of majority leader mcconnell who says the senate needs to stand with hong kong. Back to you. Jon thank you. The u. S. Announces it has postponed a joint military exercise with south korea, calling the move quote a gesture of goodwill towards north korea amid ongoing efforts to restart nuclear talks. The north has criticized the drills calling them appropriations for an invasion. Defense secretary mark esper insists the decision is not a concession to north korea but rather an attempt to keep the door open to diplomacy. The Norths Foreign Ministry says it wont discuss Nuclear Issues unless the withdrawal of what it calls the u. S. Hostile policy is put on the agenda. Pete buttigieg is now out in front of his rivals in a new iowa poll of democratic president ial candidates. The south bend, indiana mayor tops the field with 25 support. Thats a gain of 16 points since september. Senator Elizabeth Warren is in second at 16 . While former Vice President joe biden and senator sanders are tied in third place at 15 . Thats extremely encouraging. Obviously. We have felt a lot of momentum on the ground especially with the work that weve been doing, not just in terms of my visits to the state, but over 100 organizers there, building relationships, getting our message out. Jon Jackie Heinrich joins us with more. Joe bidens campaign was not pleased to see the numbers with buttigieg in first and him tied with third. In fact they used it to ask for donations in an email from the campaign about half hour ago. 15 democrats are campaigning in four states. In los angeles buttigieg, sanders, harris, castro and steyer talked about irk talked about issues including latinos. Sanders added he would decriminalize illegal border crossings. A mom with a little baby travels 1500 miles from honduras in order to avoid the terrible violence, you can call that person anything you want, but dont call her a criminal. Tonight in las vegas, 13 candidates are making pitches, top names include former Vice President and national frontrunner joe biden and the two senators close on his heels warren and sanders. Were also going to hear from the former Massachusetts Governor patrick who just entered the race on thursday. Jon also hearing some buzz about the guy who used to be mayor of new york city, michael bloomberg. Yeah, it is significant too because for someone who is not officially in the race yet, he grabbed 2 support in that iowa poll, but his campaign could have an achilles heel. The stop and frisk policy from his times mayor which a federal judge later ruled unconstitutional. Today he tried to get ahead of it. I got something important wrong. I got something important really wrong. I didnt understand that back then, the full impact that stops were having on the black and latino communities. I was totally focused on saving lives, but as we know, good intentions arent good enough. Bloomberg apologized at the same mostly black church where seven years ago he defended the policy. New york times pointed out at the height of stop and frisk black and latino people were nine times as likely as white people to be targeted by police. Whether this garners minority support is still a question mark. Reverend sharpton told bloomberg you cant expect People Like Us to forgive and forget. The Police Association said the policy made them targets of hate and violence. Bloomberg might be trying to get around with a recent pledge to spend 100 Million Dollars on antitrump ads that he wont be featured in, maybe a signal to the Democratic Party that his unconventional strategy of skipping the groundwork in early primary states and focusing instead on ads could balance out the Trump Campaign war chest which as of october had 158 Million Dollars in the bank, way more than any candidate running. Jon a lot of those candidates who are running are criticizing bloomberg pretty severely. Yes, they are. Jon thank you. Patrick the latest democratic president ial candidate to join the race. He says he has ground to make up and needs money to do it. Former Massachusetts Governor says he wont turn down potential support from Political Action committees in his bid for the white house. Not crazy about super pac money either. Im not sure if i understand the rules correctly, if i could have a say about that. You could publicly discourage it. I think we need to do some catch up. Jon he launched his president ial Campaign Last week, less than three months before the iowa caucuses. After a tight race louisiana governor will keep his seat. The narrow victory for edwards comes despite President Trumps support for republican challenger. We have more from baton rouge. Jon, it really still was a tight race when you consider the 51 victory enjoyed by the democrat incumbent governor here, translates into a little more than 40,300 votes or so, not nearly as close as the 1 or 2,000 vote margin that some of the polls and analysts suggested heading into this runoff election. So nothing like a situation out of kentucky for instance, but democrats really turned out in force. That at the end of the day is what happened here, to keep their incumbent governor for a second term john bel edwards. Numbers from the secretary of state show that 42 of runoff voters were registered democrat. Versus 31 republicans, 27 listed as other. The republican challenger selfmade millionaire businessman Eddie Rispone campaigned on largely getting louisiana back to its conservative roots. And though he did not pull out a win last night, he still thanked supporters for his shot at doing something right for the state. We have nothing to be ashamed of. We had over 700,000 people in louisiana really want Something Better and something different. [cheers] we both agreed that the time for campaigning is over, and now our shared love for louisiana is always more important than the partisan differences that sometimes divide us. [cheers] and as for the president , god bless him for it. That obviously a dig of sorts here in the south at the president because President Trump did spend a lot of time campaigning on behalf of Eddie Rispone. In fact, not just on social media, tweeting multiple times about the race on election day, but also ahead of the election, physically coming here to the state of louisiana three separate times in the last month or so, to try and rally the g. O. P. Base, to get their neighbors and get out and vote to get out this socalled liberal governor, but at the end of the day, when the rubber meets the road, they were unsuccessful. Jon . According to the fbi affidavit, a friend said he beat and slit the throats of three men in massachusetts after stealing several thousand dollars. The document shed light sheds light on the suspects criminal history several years before he and his younger brother set off two bombs near the finish line at the Boston Marathon in april of 2013. He died during a chase as police hunted the pair. Violent protests erupt across iran over the abrupt decision to hike gas prices there by 50 . Irans Supreme Leader has backed the governments decision and is now signalling a potential crackdown on demonstrations. Benjamin hall has more. These protests are about a hike in gas prices but underneath the surface they are about the simmering tensions which have been going on for a long time between the people of iran and the regime in iran, particularly now as u. S. Sanctions take hold. In 93 towns across the country, 27 people are reported to have died. Roads have been blocked. Cars have been burned. Banks, fuel stations and government buildings attacked after the regime decided to raise gas prices by 50 . But many have also criticized irans spending abroad on wars such as in syria and elsewhere, and they are angry at corruption and the low quality of life. To try and contain it, the government has now arrested a thousand people and in a rare move, yesterday, shut down nearly all the internet. Today secretary of state mike pompeo showed his support for the protesters, tweeting the United States hears you. The United States supports you. The United States is with you. This raise in gas prices up to 50 cents a gallon was supported by Supreme Leader ayatollah who called the protesters thugs who had been pushed, he said, into violence by foreign enemies of iran and he also signalled a potential crackdown. Translator these type of evil acts solve no problems. They add insecurity to whatever problems exist. Insecurity is the biggest tragedy for every country and every society. The last few weeks have seen similar antigovernment protests engulfing iraq and lebanon, two middle east nations that are home to iranian proxies and which are seen as crucial to tehrans influence abroad. 300 people have been killed in iraq alone, some are now calling it the countrys arab spring as people demand more rights and less iranian influence. Anger in iran has been simmering for some time now, as those u. S. Sanctions take hold, the currently has plummeted prices have skyrocketed and the government is finding it harder than ever to provide basic services for its people and as such this anger is flooding out on to the streets. Jon . Jon thank you. These are troubled times in many central and south american nations, bolivia remains in turmoil a week after the resignation of its leader, but its just one of many nations in the region dealing with political and economic disruptions if not chaos. Doug mcelway takes a look at that. Like its neighbors to the north and central america, several south american countries are now descending into political chaos. The latest is bolivia, where the president ignored term limits sparking massive protests that forced him into exile, seizing the presidency as political rival senator chavez, who is calling for elections in 90 days and is supported by the u. S. We salute the courage and strength of bolivian people who have protested against the government trying to steal an election. Peru, chile, and ecuador are also seeing widespread protests, each for different reasons. In peru, rebellious lawmakers suspended the president after he tried to dissolve what he said was a corrupt congress. In chile, increased metro fares sparked unrest, protests spread reflecting wider anger over inequality. In ecuador, two weeks of rioting came to an end when the bankrupt government restored a fuel subsidy that had kept gas prices artificially low. Overarching theme, the old battle between freedom and socialism. Other common factors may be contributing to the protests. Theres corruption of course theres corruption everywhere in the world but particularly in some of these countries and income inequality, the massive between the rich, middle class and the poor has bedevilled latin america for a long time. The risk for the United States is the threat of new mass migrations northward that overwhelms the border just as control is being regained. The other commonality is the new ability to mobilize people for good or bad, through the internet and social media. And its not just in latin america. We saw it with the arab spring, the formation of isis. Were seeing it in hong kong. Its given people power they have never had. In washington, doug mcelway, fox news. The three witnesses that you saw in public this week of course were important because they could give context to what has occurred, but we will hear from at least two firsthand witnesses, right . Ambassador sondland, we know what hes already said in his revised testimony when he refreshed his recollection. Jon anticipation is high as Gordon Sondland, ambassador to the eu and a key player in the impeachment inquiry prepares to testify publicly this week. Im jon scott. This is the fox report. Several officials already have testified about discussions theyve had with the ambassador and his involvement with President Trumps dealings in ukraine. Add that to his own closeddoor testimony which sondland revised after other testimony was given. For more on what we can expect, lets bring in real clear Politics White House reporter phillip wegman. Democrats seem to think ambassador sondland might be a vulnerable witness. Why . Because sondland is not a career diplomat. Hes not even a political operator either. Instead hes a trump mega donor currented United States ambassador to the turned United States ambassador to the eu, he doesnt necessarily know his way around a hearing, and the democrats are going to push him to lay out all the correspondence hes had with President Trump as it relates to any conversations that have to do with u. S. Aid to ukraine and investigations into biden and sondland at this point is witness number one. Jon well, tim morrison, already testified in the impeachment inquiry. He said that sondland said there was not a quid pro quo involved in the ukraine situation. Heres part of that from the deposition. He says, sondland told me that he had just gotten off the phone with the president. He told me as is related here in ambassador taylors statement that there was no quid pro quo, but president zelensky of ukraine must announce the opening of the investigation and that he should want to do it. That would seem to support the position that the president has had regarding sondland. Thats right. And so were in this position where were trying to precisely parse the second hand words of a president who is famously imprecise a lot of times because also in closeddoor hearings, we heard from ambassador sondland that he presumed that aid to ukraine was tied to zelensky coming to the white house for a visit and also he presumed that it was tied to ukrainian aid. Like you just mentioned a moment ago, what we heard from morrison is that, you know, he in his conversations with sondland, this was something that President Trump said was not a quid pro quo, but something he expected the ukrainians should want to do and he expected them to do. So this is something that were going to be delving into quite a bit come wednesday. Jon the president and sondland apparently had a phone call after the president s call with president zelensky. David holmes who was a state department aide, said this about this in his opening statement, he said in particular, i asked ambassador sondland if it was true that the president did not give a blank about ukraine. Ambassador sondland agreed that the president did not give a blank about ukraine. I asked why not . And ambassador sondland stated that the president only cares about big stuff. This is a guy that the president appointed. Again he was a mega donor as you described to the president what do you make of that characterization from ambassador sondland . Well, i think it is very telling and certainly something that the ambassador probably didnt expect was going to see the light of day. We have definitely seen the curtain raised on a lot of the back and forth when it comes to these two nations, and weve seen that while diplomacy is very delicate, sometimes on occasion, you know, the actors speak very craftily, but what we heard also from bill taylor earlier in the week is that he testified one of his aides overheard a conversation between sondland and the u. S. President and he heard the words investigation bantered around, so now instead of just, you know, this hearsay, sondland is actually going to take an oath and democrats are going to push him to detail every call that he had with the president on his cell phone and really get to the bottom of what the president actually wanted because as we heard earlier, you know, that President Trump told john roberts that he doesnt remember making these types of calls and doesnt remember discussing informations. Jon thats the point i wanted to bring up. We have that clip of the president speaking with john roberts. Listen. I know nothing about that, first time i have heard it. The one thing i have seen that sondland said was that he did speak to me for a brief moment and i said no quid pro quo, under any circumstances, and thats true. The other i have never heard this. In any event, it is more second hand information, but i have never heard it. Do you recall conversations no, not at all, not even a little bit. Jon the president is saying it didnt happen or he doesnt recall it. Thats whats interesting here because there are so many allegations of quid pro quo, so many different actors, a lot of hearsay conversations that have been had that democrats have zeroed in on. They are at risk as this impeachment hearing continues going up until christmas when House Speaker pelosi says she expects a formal vote to finally be taken, they are at risk of losing a lot of the American Public who are getting lost in all of this. We already know that polling has showed that a lot of people have made up their minds. The voters who are up for grabs right now are the independent voters who are still trying to make sense of what is going on. And right now its very confusing. Jon and the president s approval numbers as you reflect in real clear politics polling staying very steady. Yeah, thats true. Absolutely, and, you know, i think that what were to see is a lot of these hearings are going to be fodder for democrats on wednesday at the atlanta debate, a lot of political operatives here in d. C. Sitting on the couch, paying close to attention, but are voters doing the same . We dont know whether or not impeachment is going to be a political win for one side or the other. Jon phillip wegman, real clear politics, thank you. Thank you, sir. Jon in the midst of impeach hearings on capitol hill, turkeys president erdogan made a visit to the white house this as the two nations try to mend a recent rift over turkeys invasion of Northern Syria after President Trump decided to withdraw military support for kurdish fighters there. Weve assured each other that turkey will continue to uphold what its supposed to uphold. Translator turkey remains or it should be the most reliable partner of the United States in this region. The house voted last month to sanction turkey over its syria invasion. A Bipartisan Group in the Senate Introduced a similar effort. The u. S. Partnered with Kurdish Forces in syria to assault isis. But in a surprise move, the Trump Administration pulled troops from the area, and turkey, who calls those same fighters terrorists, attacked them in northeastern syria. Democratic senator chris murphy says theres new evidence of turkeys proxy forces committing war crimes in syria. Quote, just as an increasingly authoritarian erdogan is poised to walk into the west wing for a big bear hug. That praise less than two weeks after the president threatened, quote, if turkey does anything that i consider to be offlimits, i will totally destroy and obliterate the economy of turkey. A Senior State Department official says turkey is still a close u. S. Partner, especially as both countries have forces operating in syria. Today music mogul and businessman jayz who is in partnership with the nfl to manage some of the leagues Community Efforts is reportedly disappointed with kaepernick and feels like he turned a legitimate workout into a publicity stunt. Reports surfaced this week saying jayz, who has supported kaepernick worked to influence the nfl to set up saturdays workout and now this happened. In a last minute decision yesterday, kaepernick switched the location of his nfl arranged workout at the Atlanta Falcons state of the art practice facility to a High School Stadium about 60 miles away. Kaepernicks reps say he switched locations because the nfl denied his request for all media to be allowed into the workout to film it and for independent film there to be there to ensure transparency. His reps also say the nfl demanded he sign a liability waiv waiver. The nfl says it was a standard. And reps from the 8 of the 25 teams scheduled to attend the workout made it. Although plenty of fans showed up to watch the impromptu spectacle. He told a group of reporters after his workout that hes still being attacked and been ready to play for three years and has been denied for three years. Will be waiting to hear from roger goodell, the nfl, the 32 teams. We will let you know if we hear from them. The ball is in their court. Were ready to go. The nfl released a statement saying League Officials learned for the first time yesterday afternoon that kaepernick wanted to open the event to all media. That statement reading in part quote we are disappointed that colin did not appear for his workout. It goes on to say the session was designed to give colin what he has consistently said he wants, an opportunity to show his football ready ps and desire return readiness and desire to return to nfl. His decision has no effect on his status in the league. He remains an unrestricted free agent eligible to sign with any club. Nfl also said nike requested to shoot an ad featuring kaepernick during saturdays workout with him mentioning all the nfl teams present at the session, the nfl says they agreed to that request, but its unclear if that video was shot.
