The pentagon today is offering reassurance of the statement saying today we have no evidence of compromise of the dod information network. As for who was behind the attack, fingers are being pointed at russians foreign intelligence service, the scr. This is nothing short of a virtual invasion of the russians into critical accounts of our federal government. Russia not surprisingly denying any involvement. The Russian Embassy saying we have paid attention to unfounded stamps of the u. S. Media to blame russian hacking attempts on u. S. Government bodies. Russia does not conduct operations in the cyber domain. It is used widely across the u. S. Government and in many fortune 500 companies. Cyber experts say hackers broke into servers and corrupted a legitimate update of orion that was then sent to some 1800 users between march and june. Installing the update left the back door wide open for intruders to get in. From the senate today, a bipartisan request for more information. Republican senators, Chuck Grassley and democrat demanding an immediate briefing. The president elect joe biden following on his watch m malignd actors will be punished i will not stand idly by in the states of cyber assaults on our nation. I have not ever seen joe biden hold one actor anywhere around the world accountable for anything. And today, new alert from Cyber Security. Infrastructure security agency. They warned that it may have been just one tool that hackers were using to attack the u. S. Government but there may be other ones out there that are undetected. The Services Committee has not yet been briefed on information emerging that that the department of energy is responsible for the Nations Nuclear weapon or breach as part of the solar winds hack which began last march. Cyber experts have linked it to a wellknown branch of the russian secret service. They have not officially designated attributions. The Homeland Security committee is expected to be briefed tomorrow. The department of energy appears to have found suspicious activity. The nations premier Research Facility as well as the laboratory in new mexico as first reported by political. The department of energy issued the following statement. At this point, the investigation has found that the malware has been isolated and has not impacted the Mission EssentialNational Security functions of the department including the National Nuclear security organization. When d. O. E. Identifies software, immediate action was taken to mitigate the risk and all software identified as being vulnerable to he this attack is being there is still work here at the pentagon and they are having meetings about the scale of this attack. Earlier in the day, the pentagon said there is no evidence of compromising the attempted hack of the department of defense Computer Systems but a new alert tonight said this is a patient wellresourced and focused adversary that has sustained longduration activity on the network. The supply chain compromised is not the only threat that he had leveraged. And look, its not the first time. 5 years ago i found out that my personal information was in beijing because of a hack of the database of a formal employee. I worked for the bush administration. We have had a rainy and hacks and north korean hacks. Its an ongoing problem and for all we spend on defense, we dont seem to be doing a good job of protecting information. Bret senator mitt romney just tweeted out a couple of hours ago this where the cyber hack, russian bombers have been repeatedly flying over our entire country. Cyber warfare weakness. Glaring inadequate cyber defense. An inexcusable inaction from the white house. Pasthoughts . Yeah, you are aware there hasnt been a lot of bipartisanship. I do think that this is one of those issues where you are starting to see democrats and republicans understand the severity of the situation and sort of rallying behind some action. Increasing frustration that we are not hearing a robust response from the white house. Increased bipartisan calls for the president to put aside this silly notion of not signing the defense bill at a time when we really need the defense bill to fight this sort of thing. And i completely agree with bills point that we are spending a lot of money and that defense. May be it is for us to reevaluate. But look, the new administration is going to have a lot that needs to get done on this given how much the Current Administration has hollowed out our cybersecurity defenses. You mentioned the bipartisan nature of this. Republican senators speaking on this. It would be nice to get a briefing and know what safeguards are in place and we tell my why we should be confident. If russia is going to do these things, we have to be very aggressive that one, they get no benefit and actually they are harmed out of it. You cant sit here and just say oh please, dont do it again. Youve got to say what are we going to do to make sure they suffer consequences . Bret i guess the question is, as i mentioned, we have not heard from President Trump or Key Administration officials yet publicly. But we have heard from capitol hill. Will remember back in 2015, this seems to happen regularly. A Foreign Government hacking our government. The chinese hacking the office of personal management. 22 million data breaches for employees, including every sickle person that got a security clearance. And months went by and president obama did not react to it. No sanctions, no response. Couldnt figure out what to do because they didnt want to expose our own intelligence that we are conducting on china. This is a complicated issue. And clearly congress and the administrations have never come up with a good solution for it because it keeps happening. The good news is this past election, russian interference was kept at bay after some ramped up efforts and extra money put into this whole process. I think what youre going to see now is the defense cybersecurity front and center in the next defense funding measures. Any upcoming spending beyond this year, this is going to be a very important issue and it is not going away. It is probably one of the biggest and most dangerous breaches we have seen so far. I guess what we dont really, what we are trying to gauge as the threat from china, the threat from russia. China aims to replace the United States as a world superpower. They dont have to know how. They dont have the technical ability. They dont have the people and the brilliance of our researchers and our scientists to do that on their own. Its happening to our universities, laboratories, businesses should try to steal our technology. Russia tends to hack into systems and using it for propaganda, for misinformation purposes. Speak about bill, i mean, bottom line is that both can be a threat to us. Yeah, they are all threats to us in my mind. And look, this is a particularly volatile area. None of us are experts but security depends on the week link. He was the contractor who managed to download all this information. The chinese built the great wall. They bribe the guards at the gate. There are always human errors. We need to double our efforts to try to make them more secure and look for those things. I agree with him in the sense that im not just throwing a lot of money at this. Well, first, i think a lot of them are people he just knows and is comfortable with, which is an important piece of this, not to be overlooked. A lot of these are folks that he is in the trenches with or people who he has known throughout his career. I think that is important. Secondly, you are seen him fulfill a pledged dolomite pledged to have an incredibly diverse cabinet. Several of these if confirmed would be the first africanamerican or the first latino in those roles. It is also diversity of ideology within the democratic party, right . You have some people like deb helland who comes from sort of the more progressive wing of the party to people who come from sort of the more center left area of the party. So, it is experience. It is diversity. And it is a Comfort Level that sort of drives with his vision. Bret you know, mo mentions representative haaland. It raises questions about a narrowing majority in the house. But overall, bill, your thoughts on these picks and what they have said. Well, i agree. It doesnt bother me that people dont have experience in a particular area. After we elect the president , we elect the commander in chief who may have no military experience at all. I think being a good manager and executive is more telling. What is more important are the policies that they pursue. That is what i think is the most interesting. It is interesting to me on the diversity fight.
