In an earlier statement earlier this month, january 7, the irs seemed to diminish any potential impact. It said despite the Government Shutdown the irs today confirmed that it will process tax returns beginning january 28th. Thats today. And provide refunds to taxpayers as scheduled. Thats an important word, as scheduled. That statement went on to say the office of management and budget review, quote, the relevant law at treasurys request and concluded the irs may pay tax refunds during a lapse. So for the last few week, what weve seen is the constant rhetoric from the democrats which say, we will negotiate this as long as the governments open. The president did the right thing by reopening the government and call the democrats on this. And say, okay, lets have a good faith negotiation. We want to know why this 5. 7 billion number is wrong. We want to know what your expertise is. We want to know what your studies are looking at that say this wont work. They havent been able to provide that accept for talking points about it being midevil. Theres no fact behind that. Theres no rationale behind that. I came here to have real policy debates. I feel like were having a policy debate and the other side is having a political debate and other things that distract from the actual issue, which is how we secureborder. Walls work. They work as a mitigating factor from someone moving from point a to point b. They work as a funneling option as well. These things work. This is commonsense. We all agreed on it until it got political. Dana one of the reasons in these polls, the monmoth poll asked how important is it that it has money for the border wall . 47 say very or somewhat important. 43 , 50 say not important at all. So it almost mirrors the polarization in the country. Its become a very polarizing, political issue, again, more than a policy issue. Everybody has become an expert on Border Security. The reality is this plan came from the department of Homeland Security. This didnt come from the President Trump campaign. This came from experts who say, hey, we need walls here. Dana he moved off his position showing some flexibility. Not the 2,000 miles of concrete. I think when pollsteres ask those questions, its not clear what theyre asking. Dana tell me about the next step. President said its 50 likely to get a deal in the next three weeks. The question on another one was about whether he would declare a National Emergency. The monmoth poll said do you approve of that . 35 disapprove, 65 , although there are republicans who say, just based on principle, dont like to declare a National Emergency. Do you have an on it . I dont like it. Again, i think the president s done everything he can at this point. Thats why im glad he reopened the government. He does have the Legal Backing to do this from a National Emergency standpoint. Its not my favorite way for it to take place. If democrats wont come to the table and have a reasonable conversation about this, the president will go that route. Dana talking about reasonable conversation, tell me about the process of capitol hill. Lawmakers are going to come together. Do you think they have the rite mix of people to come together . I havent seen that right mix just yet. Im not involved in that committee. What i have seen is this. I have talked to so many democrats. When i showed them the plan, they look at that and say, im not against this. This seems totally reasonable. I cant agree with you while were in the midst of a shutdown. So now were not in a shutdown. Id like those same democrats to come back and say, im voting for it. Its. 1 of the entire federal budget. This isnt about the money. Dana do you think some democrats, are they concerned the democrats are being painted as party of open borders that doesnt care about borders . They should be concerned about that. This is truly a debate about open borders versus a secure border. Dana republicans, something didnt go well enough in the shutdown because they kept losing ground. The president was losing support.
