Back to the breaks news on the richmondfreemont b. A. R. T. Line. All service is shut down and it will be for about another half an hour. Theyre having trouble getting trains out of their maintenance yard to be able to get on to that line and transport people. Spokesperson jim allison is on the phone now. Good morning. What is going on . We have coordinated ntrs and there is one past the richmond station and now, Richmond Yard does not have power. They cant bring him here to serve people on the richmond to freemont line. What are you doing about this . Dispatching trains from other lines to get on to the richmond freemont line . That is correct. Were taking trains from other parts of the system, sending them to the richmond to freemont line and that is why were thinking in 30 minutes or so, we can start serving passengers again on richmond, the freemont line. And i would assume that is affecting other lines this morning. Is there any other fallout from this . No major impact on the other two lines that operate on sundays. We have three of our lines that operate on sundays because of the reduced ridership, but those two lines, pittsburgh point to sfo and dublin pleasanton to daly city, the operating schedule is a matter of getting the trains from the other maintenance yard from richmond to freemont. Do you have any bus bridges in place right now . We dont. There is parallel Service Provided by ac transit along the richmond corridor there. So for that short period of time, people will be able to use ac transit. What are we seeing at the stations affected by this . Are there people waiting . Are you informing people of what is going . We are informing people and there are a few people waiting. As i said, we had one train out on the system when we started service. So that is the good news. We were able to pick up the real early birds and get those people going before the problem developed and we were unable to get the trains out at the Richmond Yard. So, if the people who were at the stations are patient, we should be able to get them where they need to go and late. Jim, phil matire here quickly, if the problems at the station are not fixed, will you be able to maintain Train Service regularly throughout the day . We will. Its a matter of getting the trains that are in parts, distant parts of the system over on to the richmond to freemont line. Really, its only affecting the richmond maintenance yard and, you know, kind of trapping our trains there at e moment. Once we have trains running along the line, well be able to maintain that. B. A. R. T. Spokesperson jim allison, thank you for joining us live on the phone this morning. Again, the richmondfreemont b. A. R. T. Then well ignite the burners under the bay area and warm it up wednesday, thursday, and friday into the low 90s inland. No massive warning trend and well get back to where we should be this time of the year. All right. Speaking of warming up. Facebook. Nice transition. Sports to be reckoned with. Shares soared 30 on thursday after reporting much improved Second Quarter revenue. The biggest change for the social network has been in mobile advertising. One year ago, facebook had no revenue from ads on mobile devices. In the Second Quarter of this year, it was 41 of the companys total ad money. Given the latest numbers, how optimistic should we be about the prospects for facebook . That is a question i put for the sicon valley si journal. I think we should be cautiously optimistic about facebook right now. Wall street certainly seems to be, you know. Shares have soared over the last week, though it did end a little bit down on friday. So, were, i dont know if were entering a level that we need to be cautiously optimistic. Cautiously and optimistic dont go together in the financial market. They tend to bull forward when we get excited about these thing when is we get reports like this. Overall, how is the whole tech market doing . I think the tech market is definitely strong right now. Facebook, particularly s doing well in the market because people are finally seeing money come out of mobile ads, an area that facebook struggled with for a time. The strategy seems to be working. Well see how it pays off in the longterm. What is the strategy . Their strategy is giving advertisers prime real estate on users news feeds on mobile and desktop versions of facebook. Now, if you seen on, you see the sponsored content. Uhhuh. Advertising, they look like posts on your feed, which is great real estate for advertisers. Do users get annoyed with that, though . I saw an ad just the other day for diapers that has nothing to do with my interests. I thought facebook was supposed to track your interest. When Something Like that pops up . Exactly. It still happens. Mark zuckerburg said the company is watching it closely. The relevance of advertisements and the sales from clicks of advertisements is what we will push, you know, advertisers to continue advertising with facebook. Pardon my sort of rookie questions, but have it seemed for awhile that much of the boom in this social media was being done by investors willing to put money in. Uhhuh. Are they turning a profit . Do they look like this is going to be something that is sustaind . This is, i think, were going to have to wait and see what advertise will see out of this in the coming quarters. If people are clicking on ads and making purchases, advertisers will advertise to facebook. If theyre going to pull back, we might be back to square one. Here in San Francisco and the bay area, we saw the rise of games and apps on such. Zynga. Uhhuh. How are they doing . Well, zynga did have strongerthanexpected results earlier this mo as well, but it this month as well, but the relationship with facebook sowed, so i am not too soured, so im not too optimistic on the games front. Facebook is seeing success with advertising involving downloading apps from an ad. And that is seeming to be a good strategy from them. Is there any talk of converting from an advertising owner driven to a pay, a subscribe, subscription area . I havent heard much of that. Theyre focusing on advertising. Were going to see ads on instagram one of these days and that is a strategy. That is the number one priority right now. And are poe were in another bubble or do you think the bay area will be able to see for a while, as far as Economic Growth . I think this will sustain for a while. All right. Its an interesting one there. Facebook continues to rise. Well see how it dominoes for the rest of the bay area. And. Two highprofile democrats causing major problems for the party. That is why political insiders will talk about the fallout from two separate scandals on opposite sends of the country. ,,,,,,,,,. We want to remind you there is a closure on the richmond, freemont and b. A. R. T. Line and that is in affect and for 20 more minutes. Nancy pelosi lashed out at anthony weeper and the Anthony Wiener and the mayor of san diego. The message is hard for both men they need therapy. The conduct of some of those people that were talking about here and is reprehensible and disrespectful of women. What is really stunning about it, they dont realize it. They dont have a clue. If theyre clueless, get a clue, and if they need therapy, do it in quiet. Believe it or not, wiener remains in the race. The racy text and tweets prompted him to leave congress two year ago and mayor filner wants to stay on the job despite from seven women. And hes heading into therapy. And this is not the first time the party is dealing with the type of embarrassing situation. And that is why we return to them and. What does it say until its embarrassing they have to do something . And absolutely. Is they will protect their own. If its your guy, lets wait and see what the investigation holds and if its the other guy, my god and this is an outrage. And the public is giving them a third of chance. Were going to see what happens with him. 45 of the pem want. In new york . They want to give wiener another chance. Forty after the latest revelation are saying lets give them a shot . And he should pull out of the race and stay. Lets see. The fourth time, maybe hell act differently. What does that say if youre a political consultant and looking at the races. What does a number like that tell you . Stay in. Roll the dice. Lets see. And it says politics is changing online. Changing a generation. And i think the public standards. The public online lifestyle has changed or that the publics perception of politics was dropped so low that Something Like this didnt surprise them . Absolutely both. Theyre living out loud and oversharing on line. There is a lot of people doing this as a younger generation. Whatever. The older voters, theyre more outraged. And at this point, people are like frozen and immuned to it. What else can happen . When you have the situation as the leadership of the party, you have been around the folks and when does it become might from the public to private in. When its this kind of thing, its cya in politics. All of the political leaders. And when it breaks . Everyone wants to give it a couple of shots. This is an outrage, terrible. Why didnt someone Say Something about this four days ago . Or how about four year ago . Exactly. And it was unbelievable that wiener didnt go back into the whole issue and going for another race and have it happen again. That is what makes news. Reporter the contra talks we have made some progress with our sentimentals and some of the smallerscale issues, but our big issues are outstanding to be resolved. And one of those is healthcare, pension, and pay, right . As well as our work rules that address our overtime situation. It is fascinating. This 30day cooling off period is given both sides ample opportunity to sort of shoot numbers at each other. And for us in the media to take a look at b. A. R. T. I have too say a lot of people the drivers and station agents and custodians and for b. A. R. T. Management. It appears the golden parachutes are handed out regularly at b. A. R. T. For everyone. Well, we certainly have, among the highest sellary is salaries for this line of work within this region and among the highest win the nation. Its true. Can you continue to afford these . Not at raises. We cant afford ongoing raises as being asked, and we couldnt afford to supplement or subsidize the pension and medical coverages. It is interesting. You are new to the beard, but how did board, but how did bat wind up with not only the highestpaid operators, but also the former manager being allowed to accrue a years worth of vacation and sick pay. That she was then kept on the books for an extra year without working and thens crew during that time more vacation and sick pay. How did this system evolve . As you have pointed out, i am new to the board. It was a system, involving before my coming here and in parts, as this report indicates by the bay area news group, i think that strike situation a is allowed to be used as leverage, are negotiations with unions, define what is given to everyone else. Everyone wants fair pay and benefits. So what the workers get, the managers get as well . Correct. The majority define the standard for the few. A lot of the public, i get the feeling s saying on both houses. Both, that both appear to be over, unreasonable and overpaid. No one is happy with going going. Both workers or management in part. I can concur with much of the public sentiment here. That is why were trying to graupel with those pension and medical pay and making our workers contribute to it more. One of the questions i hear out there is what about leading by example . Why werent b. A. R. T. Manager asked to do more . Again, Everyone Wants fair and equal benefit packages. What is defined for the workers, the unions, those who bargain with us, set the standard for the few. Do you think bat drivers are overpaid . I cant make a definitive comment to that effect. I think we need to deal with do a market analysis. Its valid to say theyre the highest paid in the region and month the highest paid in the country, and our trains are automated. I think its a good question, but i dont have an answer. Everyone likes the serve as well. It runs well. Uh. Next question. If there is a strike, what are your plans . Were trying to put together charter buses and other supplemental services. Nothing can replace b. A. R. T. Service 100 . Well, that is the concern, which we found out last week, they dont have much of a backup plan. I know. I was at an mtc meeting earlier this week. You know something . They dont necessarily want too big of a backup plan. That would look like strike breaking. Well. You bring buses from the surrounding communities . Feel like strike breaking. Its unfortunate for everyone else in the middle and doesnt know whether or not we have to prepare for this or not. Okay. In other news. Theyre not worried about the letsus pickers, but high skill workers to get for cheaper in their industries. Were seeing Mark Zuckerburgs going to take a big role in this debate, and hes moving the argument that amnesty and the whole issue of the path of citizenship, even for indocumented immigrants, day laborers, the folks picking lettuce, that is important to Silicon Valley, too and not about one issue any. Theyre broadening the argument and that is smart political things for them to do. They stumbled out of the block. Y that now to politics.
